Book Description
In this, the first volume of Robert Hileman's The Crowther Letters, the reader will encounter the rarest of all historical biographies, that of the Common Man, or rather, common man living in uncommon times. Biographical history, by its own definition, defers to selected lives of exceptional people having impact upon events. The life of Colonel James E. Crowther reverses that process. The event - the Battle of Kernstown - is recounted through the eyes and words of one who is intricately part of the event itself, both as observer and participant. This is history as it happened, "in the midst of things," not reported from a mountaintop or recollected from an easy chair. "Oh, but the bullets did whistle past Papa's head," wrote Crowther to his 7-year old daughter, Allie, just days after the battle. Actuality and reality: this is Crowther's ground-view of the Civil War, in particular, and military life, in general. Crowther's regiment had its troubles in the Battle of Kernstown and one wonders how the regiment will fair in the greater engagements at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, volume two of this extraordinary tale. Hileman's treatment is sagacious; he lets a good story tell itself. Never intrusive, working behind the scenes weaving in useful narrative data, the life of James Crowther is presented in uncluttered richness. Hileman allows his subject to talk directly to readers 140 years hence. It's all there: Crowther's frustrations, his growing impatience with higher command, his understandable concern for family and future, and finally, his heart-felt pride in the men serving under him. This is history written from the bottom up, not top down, and as such, it beckons powerfully. What is "common" becomes uncommon; facts and homespun-opinion transcend themselves into something sanctified. Robert Mull, Penn State University, English faculty, and journali

A Great Account of Civil War Life and Battle.......2006-08-06
Dr. Bob Hileman has put together a great book here. It focuses on Colonel James Eli Crowther, a militia commander and livery worker from a town called Tyrone in Central Pennsylvania. The book covers the beginning of the war, the Colonel's family, and battles he took part in, including Kernstown and many other battles fought throughout Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley.
The second volume, "Chasing Stonewall to Chancellorsville," is also released and covers more battle in Virginia up to the death of Colonel Crowther at the Battle of Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863. He is the senior officer buried in Fredericksburg National Cemetery, not far from Chancellorsville.
A third volume of the Crowther letters will be released in the near future. These books give a unique insight into Civil War-era life and "The Colonel from Tyrone." This series should be included in the collection of any student of American Civil War History.

Book Description
All students and scholars are curious about the human faces behind the impersonal rhetoric of academic disciplines. Here twenty of America's most prominent sociologists recount the intellectual and biographical events that shaped their careers. Family history, ethnicity, fear, private animosities, extraordinary determination, and sometimes plain good fortune are among the many forces that combine to mold the individual talents presented in Authors of Their Own Lives. With contributions from women and men, young and old, native-born Americans and immigrants, quantitative scholars and qualitative ones, this book provides a fascinating source for students and professional sociologists alike.
Some of the autobiographies maintain their reserve, others are profoundly revealing. Their subjects range from childhood, educational, and intellectual influences, to academic careerism and burnout, to the history of American sociology. Authors stands alone as a deeply personal autobiographical account of contemporary sociology.
Book Description
People who wouldn't dream of blaming parents for a child's asthma or diabetes are often quick to blame bad parenting for a child's hyperactivity, depression, or school phobia. The parents, in turn, often blame their children, believing that they're lazy or rebellious. Even worse, the children with these psychological problems often blame themselves, convinced that they're just bad kids. In
It's Nobody's Fault, esteemed child and adolescent psychiatrist Dr. Harold S. Kopelwicz at last puts an end to this pointless--and erroneous--cycle of blame and helps parents get the help they need for their troubled children.
Written in an easy, anecdotal style and filled with fascinating stories of real children and their parents,
It's Nobody's Fault is an indispensable guide for anyone who lives or works with children who need help.

It's Nobody's Fault.......2004-03-25
This is an excellent resource for parents, health care professionals, clergy and extended family members. The author effectively dispels the myths surrounding mental illness and other disorders, with an emphasis on pediatric and adolescent issues. I wish I'd had this book years ago when our children were diagnosed with ADD and learning disabilities. Extended family members felt that my husband and I were bad parents and that our kids needed more discipline. I'm happy to say that all three are successful young people. Thanks to the author for his sensitive approach to these disorders.
Slightly helpful.......2002-01-05
I purchased this book hoping it would help allay some of my guilt over my son's disorder. Although it didn't help me very much, it's probably worth reading if you are struggling with these issues.
Questioning Medicine?.......2001-05-10
If you are a parent and are questioning whether or not you should medicate your child, you should read this book. No parent wants to put their child on medicine. This book has helped me realize that medicine is needed for certain disorders and therapy alone does not work all of the time. This book is very informative and will help you understand that yes, medicine does help along with therapy. I enjoyed reading and realize that I am not alone and there is help.
Parents of Children with ADHD: Stop Kicking Yourself!!!.......2001-03-29
This book was so helpful to my husband and me when our son was diagnosed with ADHD. This really helped us to stop second-guessing ourselves and offers helpful advice on the issues of finding a good doctor and whether or not to medicate. Though learning that ADHD is a brain disorder was painful, it was comforting to learn that there was nothing we could have done to prevent it!
A mother of a bipolar little boy.......2000-05-13
This book did wonders! After the diagnosis of my son, there was some fighting in amongst the family as to whether or not his diagnosis was correct or if it was just my parenting. This book with it's facts and concise examples, helped me through this rough time and even gave me concrete facts I could show my relatives. I would recommend this book for anyone who has just had their child diagnosed.

What is the secret to successful entertaining? "It's not just the food, not just the people, and not just the setting. It is how it all comes together," says Ellen Wright, author of Bridgehampton Weekends. After years of entertaining at her weekend home in Bridgehampton on Eastern Long Island, Wright, encouraged by her sated family and friends, has culled a series of favorite menus, arranging them by season and occasion. Casual yet chic meals focusing on good food and even better conversation make for a successful fête.
Be creative, use what is in season, and prepare what you yourself like to eat, she suggests, and your guests will clamor to be invited back. The key for the chef/host is to prepare as much as possible in advance and not be afraid of taking shortcuts (she uses store-bought mixes for the bases of her chile-infused Short-Circuit Corn Bread and gorgeous Golden Bundt Cake with Chocolate Leaves). Whether an intimate dinner party for six or a surprise birthday bash for 15, the host, too, should be able to relax and enjoy a glass of wine instead of sweating over the stove.
For a cozy, post-Halloween dinner, try Old Fashioned Meatloaf with Mashed Potatoes and Gravy followed by a Pumpkin Swirl Cheesecake. On "The Coolest Dinner for the Hottest Day of the Year," enjoy a cup of gazpacho, followed by Chinese Chicken Salad and a wedge of Brown Sugar Peach Pie. Though some of the menus may look daunting at first, the recipes are straightforward and often include simple side dishes like Parsleyed Green Beans or Buttered Carrots. Accompanied by photos of beautiful Bridgehampton vistas and well-laid tables, each page includes helpful tips on food preparation and entertaining. --Dana Van Nest
Book Description
Bridgehampton -- weather-beaten wooden barns, old and new homes, wide, sandy beaches -- and great food starring Eastern Long Island's famous produce, fresh, plucked-from-the-sea seafood, and local, farm-raised poultry.
A meal at Ellen Wright's home on Mitchell Lane is the epitome of Bridgehampton entertaining. Here's a hostess who knows how to enjoy her own parties. Her secret: an effortless combination of casual and chic. Bridgehampton Weekends features a year's worth of elegant menus that show Ellen's talent for transforming simple fare into extraordinary meals.
In the spring, when it's warm enough for lunch under the crab apple tree, serve a buttery asparagus quiche. After a day at the beach, transform summer's road-stand tomatoes into the ultimate gazpacho. Autumn is the time for sizzling potato pancakes with chunky applesauce, made at a farm just down the road. On the first nippy night of winter, spoon up a warming veal stew with button mushrooms. Ellen also shares a collection of irresistible desserts, quick side dishes, and refreshing salads, as well as ideas for one-of-a-kind table settings.
There are innovative suggestions and inspiring recipes to be learned from every one of her parties: extraordinary holiday meals, festive birthday and anniversary celebrations, relaxed weekend lunches and suppers, appealing dinners for the kids, huge bashes to feed a crowd, and quiet get-togethers with good friends, among other occasions for good times and good food.
Customer Reviews:
A terrific (and beautiful) book.......2003-10-23
In the past weeks, I've seen Ellen on the Today show, Larry King, Good Morning, etc. She seemed so relaxed about entertaining and fixing complex dishes. I'm not. I admit it. So I bought both her books, and I understand. She mixes complicated dishes with easy ones, such as glazed pork with mustard and brown sugar along with baked whole onions that you just plop in the oven. I can't yet adopt her "don't worry about mistakes and enjoy" style but I'm trying. This is a must book for scardy kats in the kitchen like me. Oh,by the way, the pictures are beautiful.
Thanks Ellen!.......2003-04-21
Please be careful reading the not so nice reviews. Remember, the title is Bridgehampton Weekends, and the words easy and casual are in there too. We all know the Hamptons are not known for their, shall we say, "regular" people. However, Mrs. Wright has given us a wonderful cookbook with many good ideas, etc. For our Easter dinner yesterday, I made her Beef Rib Roast with Yorkshire pudding and it was fabulous. She also has lots of little shortcuts and tips to help along the way. And her foolproof piecrust is perfect! Her writing is warm and inviting and I hear she has another book coming out soon. I urge you to ignore the "consipracy" review and try this book. You just may come away with a few new delicious recipes. Good luck!
all the pretty little horses.......2002-07-16
The "once Upon a time in the Hamptons" tv mini-series inspired me to purchase this book, which I hoped would provide a bigger taste of the good life. Though the menus were rather homely for what I would expect, I rarely give complicated artsy-fartsy gourmet affairs more than a second glance; so in all fairness, this cookbook was just the thing for me, simple and practical, yet elegant--something I might cook from if I could bear to get it dirty. The photography is delightful; half the pictures contain hidden messages, half again of which you probably imagined after catching the first. I might sound like a paranoid schizophrenic doing book reviews for a psychotherapy assignment, but hey, the author and her husband once worked in the white House, be smart! Is that a "yankee pumpkin" far left in the Halloween spread? Native New Englanders know what the frustrated redcoats, far away from their ladies, did with THOSE during the revolutionary war. Towards the end of the book is a bizarre photo with a scrabble board center stage. The facing plaque spells: "THERFBI." WHO?!? Pretty spicy stuff here. The pictures could use some captions, though...er. Back to the recipes themselves, I would say they are about average quality-Wise. I should warn you I must have UpWards of seven hundred cookbooks, am a fairly accomplished cook myself, and can often tell a good recipe at glance without making it, so my assessment of "Bridgehampton Weekends" cookability might be a bit Off. There were a few off-beat offerings like "white House Saltines" I appreciated. But I couldn't give it my best thumbz up with things like angel food cakes calling for all-purpose flour and stock made with bouillon, not even as substitute ingredients. Not in the Hamptons--well, perhaps; maybe they always eat out there! (Or maybe there's something more than meets the eye here, too; gotta remember the Hamptons are a place of intrigue, murder, and mayhem!) Still, the generous amount of background to each menu made the book worthwhile for me, again because I have so many cookbooks I get bored if they aren't also a good read, which this most definitely is.
Some good recipes but a little snobbish.......2002-01-31
First, some of the recipes are pretty good. Especially the tortilla soup and the chicken fricasse (although there is way too much parsley in the dumplings.) The glazed carrots with almonds are very good, as is the chicken paprikash. The banged chicken is ok, nothing really wonderful about it, but decent. I found similar recipes in other cookbooks that are better, such as The Best Recipe (Kimball), or American Home Cooking. What really irritates me about this book is the fact that Ellen is a big "name dropper". She has to talk about how her husband played tennis with former President Bush while she sat chatting with the Mrs.. Then she tells us how she visits Tom Brokaw at his ranch in Montana. There are several references similar to these. Personally, I don't really care about who she knows or who's house she visits! I buy cookbooks for good recipes, nice photographs, and good cooking techniques, not to hear all about the social pedigree of the author. Bottom line: better recipes for the same dishes can be found in other cookbooks without all the self absorbed name dropping.
This is a wonderful gift for friends!.......2001-04-20
Last month, I received Bridgehampton Weekends as a housewarming gift with a note: "Hope your home and friends are as warm as this book." It is the first book of it's type (cooking) that I've actually read from cover to cover. The stories and thoughts are wonderful and the recipes mix and match food in such clever ways -- from presentation to preparation to color and calories. And the special tips from Ellen in the margins of the book take any fear away -- what a good idea for an author to think ahead of how a reader could get in trouble! It's like she's with you in the kitchen. I can see why famous people like Tom Brokaw and David Brinkley love her way of entertaining. Finally, the pictures by Tom Eckerle are beautiful -- the Hamptons should be photographed more often. I keep the book on my coffee table rather than the kitchen. And I've sent at least ten books to my friends as gifts -- with warm notes.

Absolute Beginners.......2007-05-23
Brief Description of Book
This book lives up to its name and is a great gift for someone you may know who is just getting hooked on buying vintage costume jewelry. It would make a great companion gift to a fabulous vintage piece. This book Collecting 101 is a bit basic for absolute beginners only.
The core thesis of the book is G-U-I-D-E an acronym that stands for:
* Is the piece in Good condition?
* Do U Like it?
* Is it a good investment?
* Is the piece designer signed and is it well designed?
* Are there extras that make it more interesting?
These questions are posed to help the buyer select good pieces at whatever price point they are starting to collect at. The author explains her GUIDE concept quite concisely and uses it throughout the book.
The author suggests four designers that beginners should collect Trifari, Coro, Kramer and Weiss. She recounts a little history about each of the companies, shows photos of their marks and recommends pieces to purchase. For example she suggests Trifari from the 50's and 60's because it is plentiful, available in excellent condition and not too expensive. The author uses a lot of photos to illustrate these sections
The next portion of the book is arranged the alphabetically and cameos 130 designers. Each profile contains a little company history, marks, signature look of a designer and recommendations of pieces to buy.
In the next chapter there is a section called "Marked by Style" on identifying unmarked jewelry. A little more than a beginner skill in my opinion but an interesting section to ponder nonetheless. She focuses 75% of her energy on Juliana, the remaining 25% on Eisenberg, Dorothy Bauer, Hattie Carnegie, Goldette, Haskell, Hollycraft, Sarah Coventry, Schauer, Schreiner and Weiss.
The remaining chapters cover:
* Upgrading your collection
* Repairing and Cleaning
* Cataloging a Collection
* Storing and Insuring a Collection
Over all the advice is quite sound, the G-U-I-D-E principle should be followed it will really help anyone avoid unfocused buying.
Quantity of Illustrations:
There are more than 750 total illustrations in Collecting Costume Jewelry 101. There are color photographs, original advertisements in color and black and white. The photos are clear and focused.
Quality of Illustrations:
Comments: The items selected are not riveting I think that they are pedestrian. Maybe that is because this book is pitched at beginners. However I feel that the selections should be inspirational and exciting. This is why the top shelf pieces in a book such as "A Tribute to America" are always fun to look at. I felt the items pictured were what the author could get permission to use. Which leads me to the inclusion of Christmas tree jewelry! There are too many Christmas trees in this book. And I like Christmas tree jewelry.
I have one very pointed example that illustrates my low score on the illustrations. The author devoted 3 pages to Miriam Haskell. In my opinion these are not good representative pieces, they are what was available to include. There is one pair of beaded earrings, a necklace with gold chain and a wood pendant that looks like it was made in shop class to me, several strings of beads, a pearl necklace that is not photographed close enough to generate any excitement and a pair of gilded earrings. I may sound harsh here but the wow factor of buying Miriam Haskell is not expressed in these photos. Feel free to disagree!
As a final note on the illustrations, I am reviewing the first edition of this book. According to the publisher Collector Books a second edition should be available soon. They promise 200 new photos and updates on the price guidelines that are included in the first edition.
Quantity of Information
Range of Information offered:
For the most part this is a good concise book to check for information. If you are looking for in depth information on a particular designer you should probably look at a more specialized book. For example there are entire books on Haskell, KJL, D &E, to name only a few designers.
Is the information thorough?
The information provided seems to be thorough and remember this is a book for beginners.
Values Listed (Prices) Yes
Are they helpful or realistic? The prices are being updated for a new edition
The prices are based on what one might hope to get in an e-bay auction.
Comments: Based on the prices sometimes I want to be buying and other times I want to be on the selling end of the transaction.
User Friendly:
Is the book easy to read and follow? yes
Is there a table of contents and index? yes
Is information easy to find? yes
Is this book a must have? Only for your friends who are just beginning to collect costume jewelry. I think Costume Jewelry 202 is a vastly superior book and I would recommend that (again).
Overall comments
If I had this book many years ago I would have avoided buying stuff I just didn't need. I would have made wiser purchases and would have a better collection today.
Wonderful Vintage Costume Jewelry beginner guide.......2007-04-02
I actually bought her 2nd book (202) before buying this one (101) and while I treasure my 202 guide much more than this first one (because I'm not a beginner) - I think it is a fabulous book to have for those starting out. With a lot of fake WEISS and other great designers' jewelry being reproduced and sold as the real thing today (especially on eBay), it's a good guide to have that shows a fair amount and variation of these favorite popular designers' pieces. This will help the beginner collector possibly know a fake when they see it. Not all that shines and sparkles means it is the real thing or that it's collectible. I believe both her books should be bought together but the 202 Guide is definitely the very best there is (because it shows so many patents). I particularly like the fact that both of these books are done in sturdy paperback because if they were hardbound, they would be so heavy given how big they are. Lots and lots of colorful pictures! Well done!!
JUST LOVE THIS BOOK.......2007-04-01
Found this book to be very helpful at my jewelry shows. Has lots of pictures and information on vintage jewelry and numerous designers. Does not go into great detail, but gives enough good information to be helpful. Because the information is listed in alpha order, my customers find it helpful when looking up specific designers or styles. This book is great for beginners and old collectors alike.
My Costume jewelry reference book.......2007-03-16
This book along with the "202" book by the same author are "must have"s for costume jewelry collectors, buyers and sellers. I can't rate them highly enough.
Great overview of costume jewelry.......2007-02-25
I learned many of the basics overtime and searching the internet. It is great to have so much information in one book. The photos are excellent and I would recommend this to anyone starting a collection. Great do's and don'ts.

Incredible upgrade, beautiful book!.......2007-10-02
Hang on to your hats, jewelry lovers!!!! This is a book you MUSTN'T MISS!!! Julia C Carroll never disappoints collectors at any level of expertise. Once again, in this visually stunning new book she grabs us with beautiful pages in a logical and practical teaching layout that keeps us turning those pages!! The pictures are generous in volume and so well done you can examine the details in each piece. This new upgrade is a MUST HAVE-beautiful, bright, full of the great educational info of the original "101", but with so many more pictures and facts!! I find other authors' guides nice to thumb through, but you really learn to identify and nail down pieces out in the real world by studying Julia's "101" and "202". My collection is now full of incredible pieces I learned to look for only because of her great books. If you want the pride of knowing what to buy, and how to not overpay, buy and study this wonderfully updated book...even if you have the original "101", ADD THIS TO YOUR LIBRARY!!! Then sign on to buy her "202". Thanks, Julia C!! How about a "303"??????!!!!
Thank you from a grateful author!.......2007-09-18
I wish to express my gratitude to so many generous people who helped with this Second Edition of "Collecting Costume Jewelry 101:the basics of starting, building & upgrading".
First, I want to thank my readers. I am warmed by the wonderful feedback I have received from beginning collectors on the first edition of this book. Based on this feedback, I was careful when working on the second edition to leave in place the easy-to-use format. Thank you readers!
A warm thank you must always be reserved for my husband who once again offered me his support and his excellent camera skills. Thank you sweetheart!
Next I want to thank my friends (especially Debi Reece and Dave Mayer) who shared their knowledge and collections with me so I could add over 200 new photographs to this new edition. Thank you dear friends!
Finally, I want to thank the staff at Collector Books for giving me the opportunity to write a Second Edition. With their help this second edition has many beautiful enhancements. For example:
- Collector Books created a hot new cover and vibrant new interior color scheme. I adore the bright colors and I hope you do too. While maintaining the easy-to-use alphabetical arrangement of makers, the interior design is also updated.
- Over 200 new photographs have been added providing additional examples of jewelry designs from many makers.
- The historical information and information about marks is updated.
- eBay selling changes frequently so Chapter 6 - "Upgrading Your Collection" is fully updated.
- A new chapter is added featuring 13 makers not shown in the first edition.
- The popular "Marked by Style" chapter, showing unmarked jewelry attributed by the style to specific makers, is revamped and expanded.
- Of course the values have been updated.
Thank you Collector Books!
I love jewelry, I love collecting, and I love this new edition. I hope you do too. Warm regards, Julia C. Carroll
Book Description
Joanne Tallarovic reveals how she modifies traditional Swedish ripsmatta (or Scandinavian rep weave) to create her highly prized handwork. Often associated with rag rugs, rep is a simple weave structure in which the warp almost entirely covers the weft. While Scandinavian rep weave is usually characterized by bold geometric patterns, the author has evolved the tradition by combining blocks in unexpected ways and introducing evocative contemporary colorways. The 29 masterfully designed projects including clothing, table linens, rugs, and wall hangings will lead handweavers to their own explorations and innovations. Designed for beginning to advanced weavers, the projects are accompanied by step-by-step instructions, clear illustrations, and inspiring color photographs.
Customer Reviews:
Somewhat disappointed.......2005-04-01
I was very eager to learn to weave rep, and very excited that there was a brand new book out on the topic. However, I was somewhat disappointed in this book. It definitely has beautiful pictures, many inspiring projects, and offers alternative ways of doing the projects, for example, alternative wefts. But the long chapter on how to warp a loom was, in my opinion, not necessary, as that topic is covered in many other weaving books. I think a few hints about her special techniques would have sufficed.
I would have preferred more coverage of block theory to provide a broader basis for understanding the structure of rep weave. The chapter on designing your own rep weave projects was particularly disappointing since there was no discussion of blocks or how to design block weavings. It is basically a list of rules which are somewhat helpful but very thin in explanation.
A major problem I encountered is typos in the project notes. The project I am doing (the blue and white table runner) has a typo in the profile draft and the shafts are reversed in the treadle tie up.
I would still buy this book, and I would suggest anyone interested in rep weave consider buying it, mainly because I can't find any other books on rep weave. However, in my opinion, it is incomplete and doesn't serve up its promise.
A weaver.
Beautiful, inspiring, and innovative........2004-12-18
Rep Weave and Beyond is a joy to look at and read. As a weaver of many years, this is at the top of my list of inspirational books. First of all, it's visually beautiful, being filled with full-color photographs of the author's work, which is gorgeous. Ms. Tallarovic lives in Arizona, and she draws inspiration for her elegant color ways from the hues of the southwest: ecru, gold, bronze, terra cotta, reds, greens, dusky purples, and turquoise. She seems to be comfortable using both earth tones as well as more vibrant colors. She has based many of her designs on Native American weavings and pottery patterns. These are sensitive interpretations done with respect for the traditions she borrows from, and her incorporation of the patterns into a European weave structure works very well aesthetically.
Second, the book is filled with projects which are clearly explained down to the last minute detail, along with color photos of each finished piece. The author lays a good foundation for these project recipes in the first section of the book, where she outlines her method of winding a warp, dressing the loom, tying on, weaving a heading, in short--all the preliminaries every weaver should know. Beginner weavers should find the instructions manageable.
Ms. Tallarovic wrote this book for weavers who want to explore rep weave, but for whom the traditional Scandinavian technique might be out of reach. Due to the very close warp setts used in the traditional version of this weave, getting a good shed on a jack loom can be a problem. In addition, weaving rugs with setts of 90 ends per inch might be beyond the patience level of many people.
To make rep weave more "weaver friendly," the author has spent years experimenting with using thicker threads at lower setts. All of the projects in this book can be woven using Maysville cotton carpet warp, which comes in over 40 colors. Using the Maysville cotton, her designs can be warped using setts of between 16 and 40 ends per inch. These warps do not completely cover the weft, which ends up, as she notes, "producing a livelier, more dynamic surface." From what I could see in the photographs, she is correct in that regard.
Also, as she uses printed fabric for many of her thick wefts, a layered effect happens when the block patterning of the warp threads floats over the printed pattern of the woven fabric strips. A further innovation she has come up with is using many colors in the pattern warp, rather than the traditional two colors.
Perhaps what I like most about this book is seeing how someone can bring a traditional weave forward into the present. Ms. Tallarovic has furthered the evolution of this ancient weaving form. She has added to its visual excitement, made it more accessible to the average weaver, and shown how patient experimentation can add new life to a tried and true technique. There are so many directions each individual weaver can go with this method of weaving once s/he has mastered what the author offers in the book. I can envision using painted warps and/or hand-dyed or painted wefts. I can also see using oriental papers as wefts as well. That would be only a beginning.

Book Description
"We all have times when we need a reminder... a message to bring us back to the center; a maxim to help us bear in mind what's really important; a few encouraging words to nourish our souls and help us envision the big picture..." - Douglas Pagels
DAD WAS RIGHT! is a collection of durable, common-sense advice, encouragement, and insights about life and the best way to live it -- as imparted to us by our own dads and all the other significant "father figures" in our lives.
If, for instance, you were wondering how to get through the days with a positive attitude, you might have heard Dad say, "Life is 10 percent what you make it and 90 percent how you take it," or "Always look on the bright side." If you wanted to improve your relationships, he might have told you to "Keep friends close to your heart," "True love is worth waiting for." If you went to him for career advice, he might have counseled, "Choose a job you love," but remember, too, "The road to success is always under construction." And it would turn out he nearly always seemed to know the right thing to do or say.
More than just a compilation of inspiring thoughts, this book is a lasting tribute to the men who deserve a special place in all our hearts.

When You Oughta Know and the other singles from Jagged Little Pill first came blaring out of radios in 1995, their raunchy, confessional lyrics and hard-driving music suggested the arrival of another angst-ridden rock diva--no doubt with history of psychic dysfunction and substance abuse fueling her art. On the contrary, Canadian music journalist Paul Cantin's respectful biography tells us, Alanis Morissette is a consummate professional who wrote her first song at age nine and released a chart-topping Canadian pop album at 16 (in 1991). She had a happy childhood in a close-knit family, growing up in Ottawa, Canada's famously wholesome and dull capital.
Instead of yet another saga of individual excesses vented into a microphone, the real story here proves to be the more interesting drama of a serious, dedicated artist working to make her music more personally meaningful with the same discipline and drive that made her early commercial success possible. Detailed accounts of her collaborations with a slew of songwriters and producers show a maturing Morissette learning to trust her own instincts and stop trying so hard to please her mentors. The result, ironically, was a platinum-selling CD (Jagged Little Pill) that pleased almost everyone. Cantin's circumspect text doesn't offer much for gossip junkies, but his close focus on the creative process is ultimately more satisfying ... though I still want to find out who inspired the jealousy-crazed "You Oughta Know." --Wendy Smith
Book Description
Just two years ago Alanis Morissette was a former teen pop star, dismissed by some as a footnote in Canadian pop history. Then her album Jagged Little Pill sold over 13 million copies worldwide, and a new queen of alternative rock was crowned.
Here Paul Cantin tells the tale of how Morissette transformed herself from failed teenage star into an artist whose work speaks to an entire generation. With multiple Grammys and MTV Awards under her belt; this singer/songwriter has achieved what none thought possible. This is the story of that rare second chance.
Included in this book are: Morissette's own account of her songwriting inspiration, exclusive interview material, a front-row account of the 1996 Grammy Awards, and never before-seen photos. This is the one book no Morrisette fan will want to be without.
Customer Reviews:
Best Alanis bio!.......2002-07-03
... I've read a few Alanis Morissette biographies but this one takes the cake! Paul Cantin gives us an indepth look into Alanis's life in a professional and wonderfully written way, unlike that so-called bio "Ironic: The Story of Alanis Morissette". If you're interested in an Alanis bio, get this one!
a must for all Alanis fans!.......2002-03-06
I deeply enjoyed it. very informative. you get her whole life story written in a very enjoyable way. I loved it. I bought it and recommended to all her fans.
interesting.......2002-03-01
she had a very interesting life she could have been what ever she wanted to and she chose to be a singer...good for us!
Not bad.......2000-06-16
This a pretty good bio of Alanis but it is pretty boring. It mostly talks about Klovan, Morgan and her family, not much about her. So it's not bad, but if you're an Alanis fan, don't buy it.
The best Alanis bio around!!.......1999-01-23
This is the best Alanis bio around. This book deserves so much more than just five stars! I have three different books about her and this one is the best. While the pics may be a little lacking the content is unbeatable. Anytime I need to look back on something in Alanis' life I use this as my sort of encyclopedia of her life. Paul has written numerous newspaper articles about Alanis, so we know what he says is the truth. If you want to know about Alanis' life, don't touch "Ironic", or "Death of Cinderella", get this one instead!

Book Description
This is the first book to explore the rollercoaster life of the talented singer/songwriter whose versatile voice and uncompromising lyrics propelled her first album, Jagged Little Pill, to multiplatinum sales and four Grammy awards.
Stuart Coles focuses on the events that transformed her from a teen pop idol in Canada to an icon of alternative music and figurehead for 'angry young women' everywhere. He also examines her unusual anti-star beliefs and opposition to drugs and alcohol as well as assessing the controversy which surrounds her success, with critical claims that she is a 'record company invention'.
Customer Reviews:
First Album is NOT Jagged Little Pill.......2002-06-07
I have not read this book but by the review of it I realize I don't want to. If it states in the book that her first album was "Jagged Little Pill" then it's incomplete and fictional. She not only put out 2 other albums but also has music videos (inclduing one which co-stars Matt LeBlanc).
Amazing life, amazing singer........2001-10-02
The best female singer, Alanis morissette. this is her life story, she didnt have an easy life. but that what made her the person she is today. if u are a fan/love her music u have to read what's behind it.
Outstanding Pictures .... too brief text.......2001-07-15
The pictures in the bio of Alanis are outstanding, and may be worthy of purchase. However, the text is too brief - and the author melds facts about Alanis with his opinions about her work and life in a rather unsettling way. I don't think this account of Alanis's life should be given too much weight.
Wanna Get to know Alanis herself then get this book.......2000-01-04
If you are a fan of alanis morissette like me then you shall definitely like this book as it gives you an insight of what happened in her life right from the time she was born to the time she did her world tours of Jagged Little Pill..
I am sure that you shall like this book and I consider it a very good buy....it also has alot of nice pictures on good qualitly pages, the print color is also very good.
So go ahead click the Buy button you shall not regret it.
interesting, informative, feel closer to Alanis.......1999-10-07
This is a great book! There was however one big mistake that I saw. It mentions that on her 21st birthday she sang infront of a crowd of 300 people. I was at that concert June 1st 1995. There was more like 20,000 people!!!!!!!!

Number 1 Fan.......2001-05-10
I have to say that this book was very informative and told me loads of things about Alanis that i though i already knew. This is a must have for any fan as you get to understand Alanis as a normal person rather than just another million selling artist. This book shows that Alnais is true and as devoted to her life as we are to her
You Live You Learn was Great.......1999-03-12
When my communications teacher assigned a 5-8 minute informative speech, I thought what better time than now to talk about Alanis. I thought I knew just about everything on her, and what I didn't know I figured I'd be able to find on the internet and in magazines. When my professor said no magazines or internet addresses allowed, I about died. I had some trouble finding a lot of information other than magazine articles on Alanis, but after I found this book I had all I needed. It was not only informative, but extremely interesting and something I actually enjoyed reading. I found that I knew very little of Alanis and her past, and after reading it I had gained a great sense of respect and admiration for her. She is truly an amazing, talented person both musically and in her personality. She really enjoys her music, and lives through it, which is clearly evident after reading this book. I would definately reccommend it to anyone wishing to learn more about her.
Excellent read on a popular star.......1998-08-24
Alanis Morrisette keeps on winning new fans, I'm included. Even though her album Jagged Little Pill was played continously on the radio, this book helped me realize what a talented and devoted person she is to her music and songwriting. With her new single, "Uninvited," this book came out at the right time... letting me in on her upbringing, background and early years as a songstress in Canada. If you're a fan, read this book!
You Live, You Learn.......1998-08-24
Besides Paul Cantins book of Alanis Morissette this is the very best Alanis book. Well, it is definately among the best. If you need Up To Date information on Alanis this is the book to read. It is the most recent written Alanis book, and has info on both the Tibetan Freedom Concert and Bridge School Benefit. It has eight pages of color pictures. If you would like to view the cover, it has the same picture as "Death Of Cinderella" except smaller, and the backround is of Alanis facing up like praying or something. The pictures are all black and white, however they are beautiful RARE ones (like Alanis and Madonna and Alanis running in the triathalon in mid summer 1997.) The review I wrote before is fiction. I hadn't even taken one look at the book, however now I have it. It is an awesome Alanis book. I think that any Alanis fan MUST!!!!!!!!!! have it.
Alanis Morissette: You Live You Learn.......1998-08-06
I think that this book goes a lot along with Death Of Cinderella (by Stuart Coles). It has a lot of the same text. The pictures are not your regular Alanis Morissette pictures, but they are good. There are a few mistakes on this book (Like on page 37) I would really recommend Paul Cantin's book as #1 though. You may be impressed. JpnOldMan

Alanis Morissette.......1998-08-06
This is the second Alanis book written. In many forms it comes with an interview cd that is 43 minutes long. It is very cool (the interview). The book has the first awesome information written on Alanis. Well, in that time. It is now out dated. He only has information on one new song "No Pressure Over Cappuccino" and has some inaccurate information. However, the interview cd gives him an extra star. Good pictures, there's even one on the interview cd. It is a very small book. But, all in all, pretty good.

Prodigal Daughter.......2003-07-02
After some much needed rest from the success of her judggernaut album, Alanis spoke with Paul Cantin. Not written in the voice of Mrs. Thang, Paul does justice to the hardship and creative renewshal she faced time and time again. The truth comes from those who know Alanis best: herself, parents, friends, managers and band members.
Broken up into sections, Fate Stay With Me and Head Over Feet, the book discusses her time as the pop princess of (Ottawa) Canada, her failed years and triumphant return with Jagged Little Pill. The myths of her life are demystified and the rumours justified or denied (like the ever famous who was All I Really Want really about?)
You Oughta Know is written -in half- by Alanis Morissette, a very candid book much like the prolificness of her lyrics. A worthwhile read for the fan to learn about her rare second chance.

Another Quick Study.......2001-09-19
Essentially that title sums it up. The problem with most of these kinds of books is they cover every facet of the performer's life but they are too close in time and too enthusiastic to be definitive on the career of someone who is clearly talented and articulate but has a long way to go to develop to the level of those whom we will remember a hundred years on. This is a source on a life in progress not anywhere near a final word and analysis.
This review will serve as well for the second edition when it is listed here.
HORRIBLE.......2000-01-06
I absolutely LOVE Alanis. But this book is HORRIBLE. It has HARDLY anything about her. He just babbles on about Joni Mitchell and Bjork and people like that! The word Alanis is mentioned like 2 times in the whole book. The pics are kool, but the words are stupid. Don't bother buying this because you won't hear anything about alanis.
I'm a huge Alanis-o-holic but I still love this book........1999-04-30
This book is definitely not the book to read if you're looking for something like a biography, thoughts, feelings or anything like that of Alanis Morissette. I read this book expecting to fill this gap that I had in my Alanis knowledge (I'd like to get inside her head!) but instead I learnt a lot more.
As I read it, I discovered that it was less to do with Alanis, and much to do with 'the female rock revolution.' BUT STOP: GO AND BUY IT ANYWAY! This book is really interesting, or at least I thought so, because you learn so much about what Alanis Morissette has been part of. Thanks to this book, I've learnt about Tori Amos (a great singer and Alanis' friend!,) Patti Smith (an oldish rock singer) and many more female rockers, and it's really great!
The way the book is written can be a bit tiresome: Barry Grills seems to be stuck on using the word 'ironic' every other sentence, and also it is a little hard to get into, but I do recommend it.
NOT as great.......1999-03-08
Paul cantin's books on alanis are so much better this one is not. its hard to say that an alanis book isn good knowing how big a fan i am and all but if you are a alanis collecter you should get the book, but if your new onm alanis this isnt the greatest source for info
YOU HAVE TO READ THIS...DONT BE FOOLED.......1999-01-11
WHEN BYING THE BOOK IT MAY LOOK WONDERFULL BECAUSE OF ITS COVER AND PICTURES BUT DONT BE FOOLED THE CONTENT IS MOSTLY HOGWASH AND THE ONLY THING WORTH READING IN THIS BOOK ARE THE SUB TITLES.THE PICTURES ARE NICE,EVEN SO,THE CONTENT IS NOT SUFFECIENT.THE ERRORS ARE ATROTIOS AND MORE OF HER LIFE WOULD BE ACCEPTABLE BUT MY GOD,A WHOLE CHAPTER ON A NOTE SHE WROTE AND THE STORY BEHIND THE LEETTER TO A TEACHER.A PARAGRAPH ABOUT HER LIFE I WAS NOT HAPPY,OFF CORCE,I' EXAGERATING ABOUT THE PARAGRAPH ON HER LIFE,BUT PLEASE..THIS GUY CAN'T WRITE A BIOGRAFY...IT SHUOLD BE TITLED...THINGS THAT DONT REALLY MATTER ABOUT ALANIS AND NO BIOGRAPHY.DO YOUR SELF A FAVOUR AND RATHER SAVE YOUR MONEY FOR A MORE IMFORMATIVE BOOK.THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR ALANIS FANS. This is not an alanis interveiw.......2003-10-06
Dont not buy this product if you think you are going to get hours of Alanis talking and being asked questions. Thats not what it is. That is what i was exprecting but no i was wrong. This CD is just this British woman talking about Alanis' life and her career. It only has 15 second clips of Alanis talking at the beginning of each track. This CD is not what it may seem. The Mini poster is kind of cool though, but overall it is not worth it.

The Story Of Alanis Morissette.......1998-08-06
This is a book of Alanis mostly for pictures. They are good quality, huge, and many are full color. However the writing is not that thorough. Really all you need to know is read the back of the book ten times, and you will have read the whole book. The writing is actually really sucky, and she covers her days on Nickelodeon in one paragraph. Here is that paragraph: Alanis landed herself a starring role on the Nickelodeon cable tv shoe "You Can't Do That On Television" at the ripe old age of ten. As she would years later tell "Rollingstone" magazine, "It was a good, stupid, sarcastic kind of show. Very obnoxious and very tongue in cheek." That is all she wrote. STUPID and BORING! Especially that part about being the "ripe old age of ten." It's an excellent picture bio though.
Too many pictures to little info...........1998-07-28
This book is a good book if you like pictures but if you don't it sucks it has way to little info to be a great book like Alanis Morissete A Biography from Paul Cantin
Pretty good for those who don't know much about her........1998-05-25
When I got this book it pretty much blew me away because I didn't know anything about her. But now I know that it's basic stuff any self-respecting fan should know. The pictures are great, though, and die-hard fans might even want to take it apart to tack on their walls.
alanis is worth it.......1997-12-13
i think that any book about alanis is worth buying im a majore fan. this book pretty much tells the basic info but it does have great (crazy)pictures of alanis
A great book about a great girl.......1997-06-13
I liked this book a lot more than the others written about Alanis. The information is pretty basic, and most die-hard Alanis fans like me would already know most of the stuff. Still, it's a wonderful book and it's definitely worth owning

Excellent biography.......2004-09-03
Besides info on his personal life (Pgs 34-39) :1st wife Betty Haas; 2nd wife Hadassah Freilich (whose parents fortunately survived the Holocaust, and the ages of his son & daughters, the book concentrates mainly on the political ideology and career of Senator Lieberman. Its end of the biography in prose on pg 133, reminds the reader that the book was published 3 months prior to the 2000 election. The book (paperback) contains 4 appendix(s) :I.The Lieberman Chronicles (birth 2/24/42-year 2000 publishes "In Praise of Public Life" II.What People Have Said(Quotes from both Democratic & Republican Politicans(e.g. Former Senator of Georgia Sam Nunn)and other Notable Figures III.Selected Statements by the Senator himself IV. Selections from Senator Lieberman's Voting Record(listed alphabetically from "Abortion(9/11/1991/H.R. 2707,Amendment 1108) to Voter Registration(March 17,1993 H.R.2).The book also contains a biliography of books(pg 239-240) and a bibliography of periodicals(Pgs241-249),a leaf pg 250 and a bibliography of transcripts (Pg 251),a leaf page 252 and a page of useful websites (Pg 253(e.g. www.cnn.com)
Interesting, but very brief.......2002-04-20
Although this friendly paperback is about 250 pages, 120 of these are just summaries of the bills he worked on.
This was a nice reference about Lieberman when he was first announced to be Gore's choice in 2000 for running mate, but now the world needs to see a more in-depth portrait of him. Still, this book is interesting in that it gives us a brief idea of Lieberman's strong moral standards and integrity.
