Book Description
One Vietnam Vet's story of God's divine providence and protection.
When Ed Bowen stepped over the border from Canada to America, little did he know the far-reaching ramifications this would have for his life. He was drafted into the Vietnam War with an assignment as a door gunner for air combat, normally a sure ticket to an early death.
Through an unexplainable chain of events, obviously directed by the hand of God, Ed went from the horror of Vietnam to become a combat artist, well protected from the death and destruction that should have been his.
Laugh, cry and rejoice in God's remarkable intervention, while receiving encouragement for your own life that "in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

Book Description
Few women of this century have been more ahead of her time than Margaret Mead. She awakened in people an awareness of global patterns of behavior on topics as diverse as sexual mores, food and culture, health and education. She spoke authoritatively to political and scientific issues as far-ranging as war and space travel. In this vivid and deeply personal portrait of Mead's brilliance, foibles, humor, and her private reactions to friends and enemies, Uncommon Lives traces the intertwined lives of two remarkable women. As one of Mead's few life-long confidants, Grinager breaks through Mead's indomitable professional demeanor to reveal the woman behind this most unique thinker, who not only commanded the attention and respect of her fellow scientists but also influenced generations of women around the world.
Customer Reviews:
the best portrait of margaret mead's personality.......2001-02-16
Margaret Mead shared our home for the last thirty years of her life and was my godmother. My mother, Rhoda Metraux, worked as her collaborator and partner.
Margaret Mead was a fascinatingly complex person. The late Pat Grinager kept a detailed diary of her lengthy friendship with Mead and understood her personality very well. What we have here is a very well developed study of Mead's personality. If you want to know what kind of person Mead really was, you will find it here.
One brief story that tells one a lot about Dr. Mead. I once asked her to define the word, "Success" as in "Who is a Successful Person?" She replied, "That's easy. A successful person is one who before he dies, brings happiness to another person....who improves the life of a fellow human being."

Back to the 50s.......2007-09-14
I have two points, sadly both of them not very positive. My partner and I are having problems with intimacy, and we are pursuing ways to 'fix' the problem. If one is new to dating and intimacy this book would probably contain helpful advice. A more seasoned individual will not find this book helpful, nor will it deal with the more complicated sexual situations in real life. The second point revolves around the fact that, in situations outside of the bedroom, the author appears to have mistaken the century, and advises women to be pleasing, personality-lacking, self-effacing 'yes people'. Although I agree with her point that we should always try to put our best foot forward, she is one step away from advocating a subscription to the June Cleaver fan club. I can't dissuade the reader from buying this book enough.
Pretty basic stuff.......2007-07-03
For someone new to relationships and men and very little experience, this is a fair review of various aspects of relationships from communication to sex. But it is for all practical purposes mostly common sense or just scraping the surface. Don't expect to walk away from this book with any revelations on how to please a man. The first 1/4 of the book for me was pretty retarded to be honest :) The rest of it, well you could definitely learn more from gossip with your girl friends! And they don't make claim to be "experts".
Very cool and very useful........2006-05-17
I don't know how Eve understans men so well (maybe she had a lot of brothers?) but she does. Women who rely on this book will keep their men their adoring servants for life, and the funny thing is the men will ahve a great time doing it (and think it was all their idea). I also recommend the author's companion book, The Complete Idiots Guide to Pleasing Your Woman.
Buy the matched set!.......2006-05-17
My wife and I were given this book, along with author Eve Salinger's Complete idiots Guide to Pleasing Your Woman for Valentine's Day. They are so sexy and smart and funny. We have a great time reading them aloud to each other...and taking their advice. They will add a lot of new energy to your raltionship -- that's for sure!

Should be "some things" low carb.......2003-04-18
Some of the recipes in this book are keepers, but a lot of them make you wonder if they've really thought through the low-carb idea. For instance, there's a recipe for "Glazed Bananas." Bananas by themselves are off-limits for most low-carbers, but this recipe suggests adding honey to the mix. At 20 carbs per serving this treat is described as "moderate."
Nutritional reporting is minimal. No calorie counts are reported for recipes. Carb counts include fiber, and fiber is not reported on its own, so good luck figuring out net impact carbs.
Dana Carpender's 500 Low-Carb Recipes is a much better bet.
this one's a keeper.......2003-01-01
This is a great book because the recipes are creative, easy to prepare, and very flavorful. I had a dinner party using some of the recipes, and all of my friends went out and bought the book. We're groupies!

Learning Antiques.......2007-10-05
I'm a beginner. This is a great learning book if you are interested in old stuff!
No Use To Me.......2005-12-03
I have yet to use this book in any real-life, practical way. It is too big to bring to sales and takes too long to research stuff if you did bring it with you. By the time you found the item you were interested in, someone else would have snapped it up. My experience in buying has served me much better. This book has become another shelf-space-eating dust collector.
Total Waste of Money.......2004-12-18
I am sorry, but who ever thought this book was in any way helpful in teaching people to "Price it Yourself" was oh so wrong. I was so excited about getting the book and when I opened it to find nothing but page after page of words with only a few drawings to back them up... I was, oh so sadly, disappointed. I guess it might work IF you were to come across the exact item(s) discribed throughout the book. It's like trying to read an encyclopidia, only not as informative. I tried to get through it, but put it down after five or so pages. It's off to the Goodwill, so if you want it, look for it there.
Title Misleading-Not What You Think.......2004-09-28
I bought this book thinking it would help me in my new venture of antique collecting. While the authors are very well-qualified in this subject I feel as though it wasn't written for the average person. This book WILL NOT help you when you go to your Saturday garage sale or flea market. The book spends way too much time on furniture and the second half of the book is all 'practice appraisals' which are for objects the average person will never buy or be able to afford. I felt like this book had a certain 'snob' appeal and if you can afford to buy a $5000 or $10,000 piece you probably have enough knowledge without having to consult a book. (I was stumped because the practice appraisals don't list a value for any of this stuff). Save your money and buy a book that directly relates to what you are collecting or hoping to find.
Price It Yourself by Rosson, Fendelman et al........2003-07-24
This book is an excellent purchase for any first time buyers
of antiques. The work begins with a discussion of the factors
to be considered in an appraisal i.e. material, origin, age,
size, condition and purpose/utilization. The author teaches
how to examine an antique by making mental notes and observing
important details; such as, carvings, initials etc. He provides
an example of the Gorham Company markings on objects. For
instance, a bell shape stamp means that the item was made
circa 1900. An item may have several valuations; namely,
retail value, cash value, liquidation value, replacement value
and the fair market value. The author provides major auction
houses; such as, Garth's, Northeast Auctions, E-bay and
Net-auctions.com. This book is a worthy purchase for any
potential collector or hobby buff.
Customer Reviews:
I still use this book.......2007-07-12
I've been crocheting for years and I still use this book. This is the best reference book I've read. If you want to learn how to crochet, this is the book to get. The instructions in the beginning of the book (info on hooks, yarn, and the stitches) are clear and explained well. I find Illustrations in most crochet books not always the most user-friendly, but the explanation along with the illustration in this case makes for better understanding of the stitches. The pattern pictures are great, good contrasting colors make it easier to actually visualize the design. Learning to read a pattern can seem daunting at times, and I don't think the how-to of reading a pattern is any better in this book than I've seen in others. But I believe if you go through it patiently, by the time you start doing the patterns in the back half of the book, you'll understand it better over practice and exposure.
If you want to learn how to crochet or greatly improve your technique, practice doing the blocks/patterns in the back half of this book. Don't worry about doing the projects, there are better design out there (just say "No" to the philosopher jacket) forget them. Start from the first pattern, repeat it until you are comfortable with it and then go on to the next. This book will be in your library for years, well used but always a favorite.
Great Crochet Resource! 4.5 Stars!.......2007-07-05
Donna Kooler's Encyclopedia of Crochet is truly just that, an encyclopedia of various crochet techniques, from the very basic to the very advanced. This is not really a "teach yourself how-to crochet" book (if you're looking for one of those try Teach Yourself Crochet Visually, The Happy Hooker by Debbie Stoller, or Crochet Made Easy, a cd-rom made by Coats and Clark), but rather its an excellent resource for crocheters who want to refresh themselves on the basics or dive into some more advanced techniques. I am a beginner crocheter, though I am familiar with all the basic stitches, I refer to this book for both inspiration and to refresh my memory on some stitches that I may have forgotten how to do. This book also contains one of the most comprehensive histories of crochet that I have ever encountered in any book, and its crochet pattern gallery is truly inspiring with various stitches and edgings that I hope to master someday. All in all I recommend every crocheter keep this book in their crochet library, its an excellent reference and source of inspiration.
For Everyone, Comprehensive.......2007-06-01
This book has anything and everything you'd ever need to know about crochet--basics, types of stitches, complex work, etc. But the best part about it is that each instruction page has two columns of illustrations, one for right-handed people and (!!!) one for left-handed people. That means no more holding the book up to a mirror while you try to read! You can see from a left-handed point of view, just like the right-handed can, how to make stitches and turning chains and where to insert the hook. This book saved my crocheting life.
Invaluable Reference.......2007-05-29
The stitch patterns in this book are more than worth the purchase price. I scarcely have even looked at the specific projects, but have already made 5 scarves with stitch patterns from the back of the book. The charts and photos are first rate. If you are a beginner or experienced crocheter, this is a book for your library.
Great reference book!!.......2007-05-01
This book is great for any crocheters reference library. It seems to cover just about everything. I am right handed, but noticed that all the instructions also have pictures of the stitch done left handed as well. I'm sure this is a great aspect for all the lefties out there.
The projects are okay. The stitch collection is very nice. She even includes some stitch patterns for tunisian crochet--which I am learning how to do.
I hesitate to say that this would be great for beginners. In some ways, it is a great beginner book and has loads of information. On the other hand, being a new beginner myself, I found some of it confusing. I would recommend Teach Yourself Visually Crochet, to actually learn how to crochet. It is much less intimidating. That said, this is a great book. As my skills increase, I know that some of the stitch patterns will make more sense, though I did find plenty that I could do right now. Using this book in conjunction with the Visual Crochet book and The Crochet Answer Book just about cover all the bases.
As I said above, a great reference book.

Customer Reviews:
Good for reference.......2007-05-16
I bought this book as more of a reference book than anything else. And, it's definitely that. It covers just about everything, and the selection of stitch patterns in the last section is very nice. The patterns are okay. The two that I'd probably make would be the baby blanket and the hat.
The reason that I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I feel that some of the descriptions of techniques are hard to understand. I would consider myself an intermediate to advanced beginner, but even the things that I already knew how to do seemed confusing to me when explained in this book. Also, except for 1-2 patterns, the rest are all intermediated to advanced--though the sweater knit in tubes and then cut has peaked my curiosity!
So, for reference and stitch patterns, it's fine, but I wouldn't try to learn to knit from it. I learned to knit from an older lady, and then picked up Teach Me Visually Knitting to learn some of the things I didn't know. That is a great book to learn knitting from. In my opinion, if you get the Visual Knitting book, the Encyclopedia of Knitting, and The Knitting Answer Book, you should have all the bases covered!
Very nice!!.......2007-05-15
It is kind of hard not to sit for a solid hour just reading. I love the format and the type. At first I thumbed thru it and looked at all the illustrations. Then, I picked a chapter at random and got informed!! I will not be lending this one out any time soon...
One of my favorites.......2007-03-23
This is one of my favorite knitting books.
It is roughly divided into four parts. The first is sort of a history of knitting, description of needles and yarn, etc. Pretty much the same info as what you would find in other knitting books. The second section covers basic knitting techniques. Again nothing that hasn't been covered before.
Then there are the patterns. I love the patterns. I have not noticed errors like some of the other reviewers, but I will admit that I often change patterns to suit myself and see them more as "guidelines." So, it may not be right if you are a very beginning knitter or do not adapt as you go. The patterns are a good compilation of different types of knitting and different techniques. Very good for trying a little of this and a little of that. There is a raglan sweater from Deb Gemmell that is knitted in one piece in the round. A lace scarf, good if you have never tried lace. From Bev Galeskas there are patterns for felted baby booties and a felted hat. There is also a pattern for a felted sheep that, I think, is worth the price of the book. It is so clearly written that even if you have never tried short rows or picking up stitches, you will not have any problems. There are a couple of Nicky Epstein designs, including some of her knitted flowers, and a sweater by Lily Chin. There are a couple of patterns for Entrelac. I found the Entrelac scarf pattern very easy to understand. There are also some fair-isle patterns, a beaded handbag, and a cabled shawl.
The last part of the book is a stitch dictionary. There are so many here that this is another reason I love this book. I especially like that each stitch pattern is written out and charted. So either way you prefer to work is right there. Also I found it useful for when I was just getting started working with charts to see it written out as well.
So this probably would not be the ideal book to use to actually learn to knit. But even if you are a "beginning" knitter, you will find something that you can handle even if it is just making swatches of the stitch patterns. As you get more confident in your knitting, you will find the pattern section very useful for a wide range of projects.
Not a good book for beginners.......2007-03-12
I bought this book instead of some of the other "How to Knit" books because I could see this book getting me beyond the basics. The problem is that this book very poorly explains the basics. I ended up googling "How To Knit" to figure out what I was doing and became much less confused. Part of my problem is that I feel like many of the steps to get from skein to scarf are left out, because I'm always asking myself "But what about __." I'm sure that when I become more mastered in the art of knitting I will open this book again.
I also agree with another reviewer-this book is very poorly organized.
Nice try, but . . ........2006-09-18
I was very excited to get this book because of all the stitch patterns in the third section. There's a great variety.
Unfortunately, almost every pattern I've tried so far has had at least one error in the instructions. I'm glad I didn't try the beaded scarf, as another reviewer did--I'm not sure I'm resourceful enough to recreate the pattern myself.
In addition to the huge number of errors I've found so far, I also feel like the book is rather poorly organized. It's hard to find the information your looking for, due to the way the book is set up.
If anyone can recommend something equally comprehensive that isn't full of mistakes, I'd be happy to hear about it.
Amazon.com
Covering absolutely everything about needlework techniques and history, Encyclopedia of Needlework is comprehensive enough to be valuable for expert and novice alike. Over 40 pages are devoted to needlepoint alone, and with close-up photos of threads, frames, samples and canvas, the options are easy to understand. Practical tips, such as proper use of a magnifier or combining threads from different dye lots, are discussed in a straightforward manner, and author Donna Kooler manages to be authoritative without severity or condescension. Also discussing techniques for embroidery, candlewicking, hardanger, blackwork, pulled thread, counted cross stitch, and silk ribbon embroidery, everyone can find a new style to learn for combining thread and canvas to create unique works of art. Absolute beginners will appreciate the definitions, conversion chart, and painstaking detail taken in every stitch explanation, while advanced needleworkers will be glad to find the stitch index at the end of the book--you'll never get "stuck" in the middle of a new pattern again! Photos accompany the written history of each of these techniques, enabling novices to finally discover the proper name for those unusual pillow covers your granny stitched. Even the most experienced stitchers are sure to uncover a style they haven't experimented with yet, and with each stitch laid out clearly with illustrations, simple instructions, and suggestions for use, you'll be wanting to try them all. Most techniques have a companion pattern or two, so you can start playing with your new knowledge instantly. From a simple needlepoint pillow appropriately named "Glorious Poppy" to the elegant hardanger doily, each project is designed to showcase specific styles and develop your proficiency level as painlessly as possible. --Jill Lightner

AN EXCELLENT REFERENCE GUIDE!!.......2001-12-21
I teach a needlwork program at an arts & crafts store that is a part of a national chain. This book covers everything under the sun and then some. My students love it and the patterns that are included are great.
I highly recommmend this book to anyone who is interested in any type of needlework; it will teach you things you've never even seen before!
Excellent.......2001-12-13
This is a comprehensive encyclopedia of needlepoint, embroidery, and cross-stitch stitches. Each stitch is shown from both the front and the back of the fabric. Color illustrations shown how to make the stitch, step-by-step, with brief directions included just beneath the illustration. This book also includes projects for each area, as well as a brief history of needlecraft and a listing of supplies and tools. Although the book is slightly oversized and a little difficult to handle, it is an excellent reference source and worth the extra effort.

Customer Reviews:
An ideal seasonal reference--great reading too!.......1999-02-04
Like many of us, I want healthy plants and a great looking yard--but I need time to have a life! "Digging in the Dirt" by syndicated garden columnist Ed Hutchison is just the ticket--a user-friendly book with straight-to-the-point advice and solid information. The book's short, yet information-packed chapters are arranged in monthly sequence to make for fast reading and reference throughout the year. At last I know when to fertilize the amaryllis, seed the bare patches in my lawn, mow (not rake) the leaves, and toss that spindly poinsettia from last Christmas. From houseplants to flower gardens, herbs to lawns, this is a garden book to guide me through the seasons. It's ideal for garden dabblers as well as experienced gardeners who want a new perspective or a reminder of the basics. There's an added bonus, too: the best how-to books are those that beg to be read for pleasure, not just pulled off the shelf to serve as reference volumes. I plan to keep "Digging in the Dirt" within easy reach.
Convenient, well-organized and concise gardening reference.......1999-01-29
I like the way this handbook is organized by month and season, clearly outlining the joys (and chores) associated with keeping a garden and yard in tip-top shape. The articles are short and easy to follow without investing a lot of precious "outdoor time" in study. The details and professional content are appropriate -- not too overwhelming for the novice and/or would-be gardener, but sufficient for accomplishing satisfying success in the yard! I found this book, especially at this price, to be an excellent Mother's Day gift for mom, sisters, aunts and grandmothers.
A harvest of useful advice.......1999-01-12
What a delight! Horticulturist and nationally syndicated garden writer Ed Hutchison produces a bounty of down to earth yard and garden tips and advice. The book presents a month by month compendium of how to have a lush lawn, bountiful garden, and healthy houseplants. The author has transplanted his newspaper columns into a collection of breezy and informative chapters. It provides the weekend gardener with some great ideas and helpful "how to" advice with tips for practically each week of the year. The author dispenses friendly and useful advice in an over-the-back fence friendly style. He discusses what vegetables to consider for your garden during January's winter landscape; bulb, tree, and shrub feeding (but not lawns!) in April; how to get July's cut flowers to last longer; through how to harvest fresh holiday decorating materials from your yard in December. And the bounty doesn't end. One delightful installment describes how to plant flowers in your window well! This is a welcome and refreshing addition to the weekend gardener's library.
Book Description
When someone says, at a holiday dinner table, "Oh, those Lawrence cousins lose control all the time," or "the Davises always had more talent than luck," you can be sure there's a lesson being passed along, from one generation to another. Who tells stories to whom and about what is never a random matter.
Our family stories have a secret power: they play a unique role in shaping our identity, our sense of our place in the world. The give us values, inspirations, warnings, incentives. We need them. We use them. We keep them. They reverberate throughout our lives, affecting our choices in love, work, friendship, and lifestyle.
Elizabeth Stone, whose grandparents came from Italy to Brooklyn, artfully weaves her own family stories among the stories of more than a hundred people of all backgrounds, ages, and regionsclarifying for us predictable types of family legends, providing ways to interpret our own stories and their roles in our lives. She examines stories of birth, death, work, money, romantic adventureall in the context of the family storytelling ritual. And she shows how stories about our most ancient ancestors may provide answers at milestone moments in our lives, as well as how stories about our newest family members carve out places for them so they will fit into their families, comfortably or otherwise.
Upon its initial publication in 1988, Studs Terkel said that the book is "A wholly original approach to an ancient theme: family storytelling and its lasting mark on the individual." Judy Collins noted that "Elizabeth Stone's marvelous book on family myths and fables is irresistible. It lets us in on our own secrets in a provocative and exciting way." And Maggie Scarf wrote, "What a clever topic, and how beautifully Elizabeth Stone has written about it! I recommend Black Sheep and Kissing Cousins for everyone who has ever been raised in a family."

A New Look At The Family.......1999-12-19
I found this book to be most interesting because it made me think about my own family stories in an entirely new way. Why do we care about certain traits, how we define ourselves, what measures success - the answers are buried in those family stories - the ones we choose to retell, that is. I have used this book in classes, as well as in rethinking my own family. Fun, and thought provoking.
Book Description
One of the most celebrated and beloved jazz musicians, trumpeter and vocalist Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong (1901-1971), had hit recordings for 50 years, appeared in more than 30 motion pictures, and performed all over the world. His music is still heard everywhere today, yet few people know of his life outside the spotlight. After the death of Armstrong's wife, Lucille, in 1983, archivists were astonished to find that their Queens, New York, house held a treasure trove of home-recorded reel-to-reel tapes, photographs, scrapbooks, papers, gold-plated trumpets, and more. These materials have been preserved in the Louis Armstrong Archives at Queens College while the Armstrong house undergoes renovation before opening as a national historic museum in the fall of 2003. LOUIS ARMSTRONG: THE OFFSTAGE Story OF SATCHMO is the official guide to the stunning collection of the Louis Armstrong House & Archive. It includes a wealth of original autobiographical manuscripts, candid photos, and transcripts from the musician's private recordingspublished here for the first time.

The Coolest Dude Who Ever Lived.......2007-05-02
This is a wonderful book about a spectacular talent who brought an immeasurable amount of joy to the world. Looking through the hundreds of photos of Louis, one can't help but be charmed by Louis's infectious beaming smile. Reading through the book, I just kept thinking that Louis might have been the coolest person who ever lived. I wish I could have met him, let alone heard him play.
Great Book!.......2003-12-16
You will love this book. A ton of rare high quality photographs right from his and wife lucille's private picture albums and scrapbooks. Good writing too in the book that will hold the reader's interest. I agree with the other reviewer in that it makes you want to check out the actual house he once lived in that is open to all fans as a museum.
A great gift for any Louis Armstrong fan.......2003-11-25
This is a wonderful coffee table book, perfect for paging through while listening to your favorite Louis Armstrong recordings. The photographs include include wonderful candid shots of Louis both on and offstage (despite the title). The book also has some great anecdotal material regarding Louis' life and work. Perusing this book has made me look forward to visiting the newly opened Armstrong House museum in Queens the next time I get back to NYC. A real treasure for the fan of Armstrong's music.

Exquisite!.......2002-12-16
I absolutly LOVED this book. Honestly I wasn't paying attension when i just randomly pulled it off the book shelf. But I must say that I am glad that I did. I believe that this book is a sign of heroism, survival and hope. Throughout the whole thing, De Wijze expresses himself and his life so vividly that when i was done, I just sat there, still, glaring at the last three words: only my life. I reccomend this wonderful book to both adults and children. It is a great source of information, and also an exilerating experience to read just for fun.
Amazing!.......1998-12-03
This book is simply the truth. It is amazingly descriptive, and makes you feel as if you are experiencing the Holocaust. Mr. de Wijze tells of his struggle for survival in the treachorous conditions of concentration camps. It describes the favoring of one prisoner over another and the many horrible deaths during this time period. I reccommend it to anyone looking for a good read.
A Twentieth Century Odyssey Without the Myth.......1998-07-21
It defies logic and cynicism to believe that this story could be anything but fiction. Unfortunately, it could only be fiction if it were set in another galaxy amongst different forms of life. For here on Earth, this stark, skeletal narrative rings all too true. And yet this story of insane unrelenting brutality is woven together with so many episodes of hope, it is impossible to not love its main character, the narrator himself. Louis is a triumphant survivor, like Odysseus, only real. In a world rife with hyperbole and fraudulent heros, this is the agonizing path of a true survivor who will never leave you wondering what life is really all about. It's a quick read and completely necessary.
A profound message about surviving a terrible tragedy.......1997-07-07
This book is important for all to read. Through one man's story we are able to remember the past, in hopes of never repeating it. It is a honest story that is told with an emotion that I shared. In the closing pages, I found the greatest sadness knowing that this man had only his life to declare to all. This book has given me a message that I will carry with me throughout the rest of my life
