Disappointing.......2006-03-01

A few breathing exercises were OK, but not much instruction on developing a good practice. Most of the book explaining Taoist water and fire methods put me to sleep. Was like New Age goobly guk.

A book every occultist should have.......2005-09-18

Every occultist who is serious about using breathwork may want to strongly consider reading this book and utilizing the practices found therein.

The taoist philosophy and explanation of the differences between fire and water methods of working with energy are insightful and useful for getting an Eastern perpsective on energy work, often lacking in the majority of western books on said subject. The exercises definitely work and will have an effect on you, in a variety of manners. I do urge readers not to take these exercises too lightly...practice them diligently, but be open to what experiences occur, as you will find yourself examining a lot of the emotional and mental triggers that are embedded in the fluid stream of your consciousness.

If nothing else, consider that this book provides a different way of understanding how you breath and that such perspective can be very enlightening...For the occultist this is a must have book! Ten stars out of five

A Textbook for the Internal Arts.......2005-01-29

One of the best meditation and internal books I own. It goes through the process on how to stand and use the Outer-dissolving process. It also helps to develop your practice with regards to breathing which I have noticed many people have problems with. Although it is always better to have a teacher to teach you things like this; you could, with the Companion CD, practice these things with little problems.

This is an excellent addition to the Taoist literature available in the West today. Within you will find a blending of the philosophical roots of Taoism and the foundational practices for directly experiencing "yourself" in Tao. Useful and clear information about Taoist Breating, Meditation, and Dissolving Pratices. Written by a Taoist Lineage Master who is one of few qualified to teach "Living" Taoism in the West.
Overall it is a potent distilation of a "mysterious" subject into an helpful, enjoyable, clarifying and powerful read. A Must read for anyone(beginners to advanced) looking to delve deeper into Tao.

relaxing.......2004-06-15

I found "Relaxing Into Your Being" very helpful. There is a set of breathing exercises that helped me relax physically and mentally. I see the world from a more relaxed point of view. In the appendix, there is a good description of the physical process of relaxation.
Also, there is a very interesting and informative description of meditation.

I too am a NASCAR fan, I bought this for that reason and I like to cook. I've made several of the recipies in here and they are all FANTASTIC!! I was actually a bit suprised, but I have really enjoyed all the dishes I have made. Each has been just the right amount of flavor and spice. Don't let the TABASCO scare you, each has enough to just bring out a wonderful flavor that will keep you trying new recipies every week!

Only picked it up because I am a NASCAR fan, NEVER used Tabasco in my life! I am NOW adding Tabasco to old recipes and they have a new life & zing to them!! The recipes in this book are as varied as the personalities of the people! At first some seemed a little "extreme" but they turn out wonderful! Also nice that proceeds from the book go to worthwhile charities!

Superb resource!.......2004-10-08

My first experience of diving with a shark nearby was in Port Douglas, Australia in 2001. That was a single lonesome reef shark not moving much at all. Fortunately since then I have been able to dive in a few more places. Most recently in Palau (Feb 2004) where many of the dives had several sharks nearby. But, none more than the infamous Blue Corner.

It was then and there I gained a new appreciation and fascination for sharks. In total there must have been twenty+ sharks sighted in that dive alone including several that were no more than a couple of meters away swimming against the current with me. There was also a swarm of a dozen or so in the distance. This has to be one of the best experiences in my life. And that trip came amidst 7 months straight of traveling around the world.

Since then I've learned about Cocos Island, Galapagos, and South Africa as other places. High on my list too is to swim with whale sharks. To my great luck I came across this book on Amazon.

This well formatted book begins with sections on shark diving, history and public perceptions, then into tips on photography. The book then presents two page foldouts of all the major sharks that divers are likely to encounter and/or want to see. Hand drawn color pictures as well as the silhouette appearance (Cool!) of the shark underwater are shown too. On each foldout is a box with cross-references to the rest of the book which consists of maps and descriptions of 267 sites around the world. Every region of the world is covered. Each site is described in detail with weblinks to major tour operators. Appropriate "best season" info is also shown.

Now - I know where to dive with whale sharks and when to go! Prior evidence I found on the web was never complete and I am always leary of bias. Now there is a more objective resource. The great thing about this book is that places where sharks are located are usually great diving spots/areas. This book functions as a quasi diving guidebook.

Unfortunately, the picture isn't all pretty as described in the shark conservation section which talks about shark finning. I'll add sharks caught as by-catch of fishing for tuna too (BBC's Blue Planet book has a disturbing photo of 100 dead sharks on a purse-seine fishing boat). Do a google IMAGE search on SHARK FINS and you are bound to find more articles. National Geographic has good articles and disturbing photos on the shark finning industry.

I understand that the Blue Corner has been known to have up to 70 sharks. Perhaps I just wasn't there at the right time. Or perhaps the relentless overfishing of the ocean is affecting Palau too. It would be a shame to see such magnificent creatures be more or less wiped out save for a few remote areas by greed and ignorance (Palau is remote and it is under pressure too from the news I have read), if they aren't already in some areas.

This book is a great complement to BBC's Blue Planet video series and book as guides to understanding our world's oceans.

The Shark Watcher's Handbook lives up to the odd title. Shark diving is rapidly becoming a major attraction in the world of Scuba diving, as more dive operators have added "shark dives" to their retinue of dive sites. Some of these dives involve the proto-typical divers in cages observing the Great White, others feature divers tucked against coral walls observing reef sharks in a feeding frenzy upon fish treats served up by the dive boat above. This book gives a brief discussion of sharks and shark diving in the first third. In the second third it lists illustrations of the world's most common sharks and basic facts about each. In the last third lists all of the major dive operations in the world that offer shark dives and the type of sharks they routinely find and the type of dives they lead. An excellent resource for the Scuba-holic addicted to the thrill of shark watching.

This was bought as a birthday gift for my son-in-law who wants to build whirligigs. He seems quite pleased with the instruction book.

Anders S. Lunde is the man who resurrected the whirligig from the ashheap of historical American culture. In the 1970's, Lunde first investigated old whirligigs in New England, researched in the Library of Congress, and just plain hit the woodworking bench to figure out what makes a good whirligig work. Others have tried to copy him, but his whirligigs spin and turn and twist with a freedom and naturalness few can match. His political whirligig creations are snapped up immediately these days, because at 86 years old, there is no telling when he will stop. Great Mother's Day Gift.......2006-03-15

Ms. Bedford is one of those women who make life a joy for all those who come into contact with her or her writing. To have had her as a mother or grandmother must feel like a gift from God.

Through her short and emotionally charged stories, I found myself carried back into my youth when my Mom would work endless magic by making things herself.

The book contains three sections of stories, ones as a child, as a mother and as a grandmother. The last section is the skimpiest because Ms. Bedford hasn't been a mother as long as she has lived the other two roles.

Her stories capture and build on common elements of healthy relationships like family rituals, special places, shared experiences, favorite tokens, and powerful lessons learned together.

Often, you'll have the urge to do something similar for your children or grandchildren. Go for it! To make that easier, Ms. Bedford has included how to do various simple projects like making a pincushion, baking barefoot cookies, filling a dress up box, decorating plates, and turning clothespins into dolls.

There may also be days when you could use a little mothering. Just read this book and feel embraced by Ms. Bedford's all-encompassing love of life, people and nature. Is it any surprise that she's an enthusiastic bee keeper?

Heart warming is an overused description for books. I felt like any review of this book would be incomplete without that reference. I don't remember a more heart-warming non-fiction book.

Bedtime Reading.......2005-07-04

A friend gave me this wonderful book and, now that I have read it, I have bought it for my two daughters, my mom and my aunt. The stories create such a wonderful peaceful quality that it is now my preferred bedtime reading. I read one or two stories before falling asleep and, thus, easily settle into gentle slumber. The world Faith writes about may have happened twenty or ten years ago but it still exists if we only care enought to make it happen. She has inspired me to create quiet times of appreciation of nature and family and tradition. I cannot recommend this enough.

As a long time reader of Country Living I have enjoyed Faith Andrews Bedford's stories very much. But not until I bought this book did I realize how many wonderful ideas for projects for children she incorporated into her stories. I did not begin to subscribe until 2000 but realize that her column "Kids in the Country" has been a part of that magazine for many years. And, obviously, I'd missed some great stories. Her essays are warm and witty and so very true to life. I was deeply moved many times. She taps into the world of children perfectly.

A wonderful, warm book! It shows that life can be good and pleasures found all around us for free.
I was born and raised in Switzerland; nevertheless, my childhood was not dissimilar to Faith's growing up in the United States. No matter what the continent, children remain children and life's delights are equal all over. One just has to open his/her eyes and hearts and savor what is given to us.

Though there is plenty here about Taylor's well known drug addiction and his tempestuous marriage to Carly Simon, this rock bio still comes off as too fawning. It would have benefited from better sources. Taylor or Simon do not appear to have been interviewed, nor was producer Peter Asher. Instead, we read a lot of boring quotes from fans about how great James Taylor is.

This book isn't worth the paper it's printed on. I hesitate to even put my two cents in because I don't want to encourage anyone else to buy this trash- even out of morbid curiosity- but- this is the stuff of supermarket tabloids- if you really want to gain insight into the life and work of James Taylor- look elsewhere. Halperin can't write and his "quotes" are so obviously made up this "bio" doesn't even pass the straight face test.I feel like I should apologize to Taylor and his family for even reading it. Absolute trash- don't waste you time and money.

The best music book of the last 10 years.......2004-08-12

I cannot express how important and entertaining this book really is. Ian Halperin is a great storyteller, encompassing Taylor's early struggles to his present glory. I have read books about Dylan, Mitchell, Young and Jagger - nothing compares to this tome. A must read for every music fan of the 70s to present.

James Taylor Rules.......2004-01-21

The best tribute that can be paid to any artist is a tribute - that's what this bio is. My only concern was that the author went too out of his way to praise Taylor. I would have like to know more about some of his demons. The book reads more like a tribute. Otherwise, there are many interesting facts about the life and times of one of the greatest artists to emerge from the late sixties and early seventies.

Perhaps more of the seventies and eighties should have been featured. But the early part of JT's life is well written. I was referred by a friend to read Fire and Rain. It did not disappoint. I used to live in North Carolina. Thoughts of my childhood sprung to my mind by reading this book. Great memories - great music. This book proves how valuable an icon JT is to the music industry. And, convincingly, the author portrays his life how he overcame lots of demons to become one of music's most notable stars - ever!

Empowering! the journey from death camps to Meaningful Life.......1999-04-08

The photos of the survivors are piercing. The stories are unbelievable. Each survivor's story begins with their "normal" life in prewar Europe. We learn how they survived the war and death and slave camps in which most of their families perished. After liberation these people were able to create meaningful lives, create families, and make the world a better place. Though I have studied the Holocaust in depth I was shocked to learn the names of dozens more concentration camps. This book gives hope and strength to anyone who is oppressed on any level.
