Most interesting book!.......2007-05-13

I first learned of Arthur Ford through reading Ruth Montgomery books. It was Ford who told Ruth she would be doing automatic writing which later lead to all her wonderful metaphysical material. I was always fascinated by Arthur Ford and wished to learn more about him. This book tells it all from his beginnings as a medium who channeled Fletcher, an old friend he knew as a child who passed over after going to war. All the stories contained in this book are fascinating and within the pages I learned Arthur Ford was the medium who cracked the Houdini code! You will read the remarkable accounts of those who attended Ford's sessions and the information they received from Spirit. Its a most interesting read of a medium's life.

I have always been interested in the paranormal and the major men and women of our time that have made a difference.
Have always been interested in Arthur Ford, and that he channelled through an entity named Fletcher - I remember seeing old films where Ford's face would literally change and he would do his reading.
I was saddened that upon Ford's death, Fletcher considered himself free - like he too had a lesson to be learned, and he was so happy to move on - always felt sorry for him.
Will be an interesting read, but look under the tale and feel what I just told you - there is more to the story delve further down and you learn more about Ford, and Fletcher -

An excellent introduction to Ford.......2000-07-19

I bought this as an introduction to Arthur Ford, and it serves that purpose admirably. It is a shortish volume published by the Spiritual Frontiers Fellowship, which Ford was instrumental in founding. It is, therefore, solidly pro-Ford -- but it doesn't ignore his personal flaws or the controversies surrounding his mediumship. It consists of passages from Ford's own writings as well as the writings of his closest associates. One particularly interesting part concerns an auto wreck in which Ford's sister and a friend were killed and he was left in a coma. Writing 25 years before anyone had heard the term "Near Death Experience," he described a classic NDE. In case you aren't familiar with Ford, he had nearly a 50-year career. Two of his main claims to fame were solving the riddle of the message Houdini had left for his wife ("Rosabelle, believe") and putting Bishop Pike in touch with his late son. I previously hadn't taken Ford seriously due to the controversy surrounding the Houdini episode and some of the other anti-Ford propaganda, but this book led me to do additional digging. Ford clearly seems to have had a great deal of genuine mediumistic ability (whatever that may be). He was also a complex individual who would make an interesting study even if he had been a complete fraud. I would recommend this as an excellent introduction to Ford (or a good summing up as to what he was all about, if you are already familiar with him).

This book explains the philosophy, history, principles, and theories of TCM; how these relate to breast cancer; and how a woman can restore harmony with TCM self-healing practices. The practices include movement, dietary recommendations, herbs, emotional balance, and mental messages. However, the book is more theory than self-help. For example, Lu suggests "a combination of TCM herbs and special herbal teas to help relieve the side effects of breast cancer treatment," but doesn't give any specifics, instead saying to write to the TMC foundation. However, on the next page, he gives a recipe for producing breast milk (is this really what a woman with breast cancer is longing to know?) consisting of peanuts, soybeans, and pork feet. Later in the book he gives some herbal recipes and food recommendations. He recommends gentle exercise only (not even brisk walking), and notes that "too much sex will cause liver and kidney Qi deficiencies" or even eye problems, recommending restricting sex to once or twice a month if you're undergoing chemotherapy or radiation.

Life Changing.......2006-10-20

I read this book because someone gave it to my mother while she was undergoing chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer. It changed my life. It is really not limited to breast cancer, it teaches women's health in general. There are lists of everyday foods in the back of the book as well as receipes that have really helped my physical symptoms. I would recommend it to ALL women.

This book gives the reader a sense that they can be in charge of their body and how disease effects them. It gives some commons sense and not so common sense ideas of how to take care of yourself when dealing with cancer. I would recommend it as an alternative therapy resource and guide to making positive changes.

Traditional Chinese Medicine: A Woman's Guide to Healing fro.......2002-04-15

Dr. Nan Lu, extensively trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), founded and developed The Breast Cancer Prevention Project. He is also a founding director of the Traditional Chinese Medicine World Foundation, Inc., and is involved in SHARE, a self-help organization for women with breast and ovarian cancer. He is also a Qigong master and martial arts champion.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine: A Woman's Guide to Healing from Breast Cancer, Dr. Lu describes how ancient TCM techniques can help prevent, treat, and aid recovery from breast cancer. He emphasizes throughout the book that "TCM is dedicated to helping the individual treat the source and not the symptoms of his or her problem."
Dr. Lu presents lots of general information about TCM, natural laws, and Qi, repeating that "everything has a connection and everything has an effect on every other thing." He then applies those principles specifically to breast cancer. He says that "headaches, stomachaches, PMS, or menstrual irregularities. . .are not normal conditions for a healthy body." He regards them as symptoms that should be heeded, to prevent future difficulties.
TCM can be used in many simple ways. For example, doing a monthly breast exam is a source of stress for many women, because it focuses their thoughts on having breast cancer. Dr. Lu recommends "telling yourself instead, that wherever you touch, you are sending in healing energy to protect that location so that you will never have breast cancer." He includes many other ways to conserve, increase, and use the natural healing energy each human possesses.
The healing information is presented in a way that allows each woman to customize the techniques to fit her own needs. All the techniques are compatible with modern medicine and may be used in conjunction with other treatments.
Dr. Lu says that "many of the self-healing techniques I've talked about can help keep your organs working in harmony." Bodies that are in harmony and balanced do not suffer from physical problems, including cancer.
The Woman's Guide to Healing from Breast Cancer is a valuable reference for everyone, regardless of age, sex, or current physical condition.

Get to the root cause of breast cancer.......2001-05-25

I had breast cancer on the same breast twice, in 1983 and again in 3/2001. I want to find the root cause as I do not want it to happen again. I find the book easy to read and understand. I will start the Wu Ming Meridian Therapy which seems easy to do. I will also start to take the healing food and herb listed in the book. Thank you Dr. Lu for helping me to heal. If I had a book like this in 1983, I probably would not have breast cancer again in March 2001. I have been recommending this book to other breast cancer survivers at my support group.

Very good..........2003-07-18

This book is very good to start your research if you are a beginner. It also provides more advanced designs for expert candlemakers. The book is a little old - 1974, I think? - so there is no information about new materials such as gel. But the designs included are still fun and interesting. Shame most of the pictures are black and white...

A great inexpensive book for beginners.......1998-05-27

Easy-to-Make Candles is an inexpensive but worthwhile book for anyone interested in getting started in candlemaking. The illustrations are black and white, but it provides an excellent understanding of the materials used in candlemaking and a sample of different types of candlemaking projects. If you want a book on candlemaking but don't want to spend the money on books with fancy pictures and home design ideas, this is the book for you.

A Good Beginner 's Book.......1998-04-15

I was new to candlemaking when I purchased this book. The book was easy to read and full of nice ideas. The first couple of candles I made were very successful. The only area the book can improve on is its format. It would be very helpful if the instructions were listed step by step, instead of being in paragraph format. Other than the format, this book is overall very good. Furthermore, in light of its price, the book is also a very good deal.

I was new to candle making when I read this book and it did make the process easy and fun with the results being far beyond what I every expected. The only problem I found it that the steps would have been easier to follow if he had itemized the material needed and the steps to follow. That way you save time as well. It is a good book to buy if you're starting out.

A Must-Read for all Moms!.......2002-08-23

Wow! What a beautiful and inspirational book! In an age where there is little support for "stay-at-home" moms and parents of young children feel pressured to get jobs and put their children into daycare, this thoughtful book imparts a valuable message: Mothering and creating a home is special work. Throughout, women share their experiences of what mothering means for them at every stage of a child's development from conception through the school-age years. There are sections that deal with issues, such as breastfeeding, the rhythms of the day, working outside the family, childcare, the growth of love and the special role of grandmothers. Overall, it is a source of wisdom and support for readers, as the author affirms mothering as a valuable womanly art and pathway of development. I highly recommend!

Blondie, From Punk to the Present: A Pictorial History is the first new book on Blondie in two decades. Over three years in the making, this unique and distinctive 8 1/2" x 11" softbound book contains 514 pages of articles, essays, and photographs.

Blondie took the music world by storm in the late '70s and early '80s, and the influence of this band and its lead singer Deborah Harry is still being felt today and increasingly recognized with the passage of time. Blondie reunited in the late 1990s, produced a new album, No Exit, in 1999, and another album is due in 2003. In the meantime, we all await with anticipation as to what Blondie holds in store for us in the future.

New York City-based Blondie was formed in 1974, honing its musical skills at the famous punk rock club, CBGBs, and eventually emerging on top of the new wave scene and then crossing over to the pop music mainstream. Their self-titled first album, Blondie, reflected a punk ethos and 1960s girl group sensibilities or, the Ramones meets the Ronettes, as one music critic opined. Blondie made six albums from 1976 to 1982, the most successful being Parallel Lines, considered by many music critics to be one of the best rock albums of all time. Within this time span, from the late seventies to the early eighties, Blondie constituted a major force on the rock/pop scene, producing a string of hit singles internationally. The most well-known of these singles are the reggae-inspired "The Tide Is High," the rap song "Rapture," and the disco-flavored "Heart of Glass" and "Call Me." More recently, in 1999, the single, "Maria," debuted at number one in the United Kingdom, making this song the sixth number one single for the group there. With this hit single, Blondie reached yet another milestone—the first band to have had a number one single in each of the last three decades in the United Kingdom. So Blondie continues to make music history and the band's legacy grows. The members of Blondie are true pioneers in every sense of the word.

This comprehensive compendium is more than the usual anthology since it contains essays from such well-known insiders as Chris Stein, Blondie's co-creator, and Victor Bockris, respected music journalist and critic.

The text is divided into chronological sections covering the early days of Blondie, punk rock and new wave music a quarter of a century ago, through Deborah Harry's solo career, the band's reunion, and into the new millennium.

In addition to the comprehensive text, the book is about one-fifth photographic content, and is divided into three sections covering the band's early years, Debbie's solo period, and the band's reunion.

The book is a must for the Blondie fan.......2004-08-20

This book is a tour-de-force exegesis of the entire Blondie career and the effect lead singer Deborah Harry has on the role of the blonde female vocalist in pop and rock. Nearly the first third of the book is given over to the punk milieu from which Blondie sprang and Blondie's role in that scene. This makes the book a fascinating overview of the nascent New York City punk scene. Like the rest of the book, several authors contribute pieces of no more than a few pages. This makes for much redundancy as the same topics are covered, but treat this book as casual reading and reference and the many points of view coalesce into detailed complete if kaleidoscopic view of the territory. In here are some real nuggets, like the uncensored interview of Harry for High Times and cross interview with Nina Persson of The Cardigans. There are plenty of photos from all parts of the Blondie/Deborah Harry history and some interviews with the photographers. "Part IV: In Retrospect" contains discographies from the U.S. and U.K. perspectives along with many pages of appreciations from various authors. Metz gives a short synopsis of each article explaining how it fits in. The book is a must for the Blondie fan and adds much to those that are interested in the NYC punk landscape she grew out of.

Blondie Heaven!.......2004-07-01

A must! Go into the world of one of the greatset bands in pop history! I can't say in words how much of a Blondie fan I am! And when I saw this book here at amazon I got it as fast as I could. This tells everything about the band! It talks about each album, each struggle, and there big success! Blondie fans must own!

An overdue Christmas present for Blondie fans.......2004-01-26

Full disclosure: I have an article reprinted here ("Blondie: Once More Into The Bleach," DISCoveries, 9/99). That said, I'm pleased at how this project turned out. I read it in two subzero vacation days here, and couldn't put it down once.

From Punk To Present works well as a photo essay, scene history, and critical overview (including the band's triumphant '99 comeback). This is a Christmas present for the Blondie/Deborah Harry fan - and long overdue.

The best selections put Blondie in context of its often-turbulent times. Kudos here to Robert Betts's interviews with longtime scene photographer Roberta Bayley (whose nonchalance wins points for charm ); Victor Bockris (whose censored High Times interview elicits some candid admissions about Harry's struggles with drugs); Francois Wintein, for his freewheeling interview with drummer Clem Burke (a great subject, as I can attest); and original bassist Gary Valentine.

Being a collector type myself, I also appreciated the forays into less-obvious terrain, including Harry's work with the Jazz Passengers ("Private Lesson: Debbie Does Jazz"), and the reunited band's bid for radio acceptance ("No Exit In Sight: The Rebirth Of Blondie" -- which reminds us of the skewed promotional logic that prevails in the music business. For anyone writing off Harry's `80s and `90s solo work as chopped liver, Daniel Porter provides a thoughtful, balanced assessment.

I would have liked tighter editing of the academic pieces, and interweaving of photos into the lengthier selections, just to give the reader's eyes a break. (Of course, printing budgets play a role in these decisions, so that's hardly a knock.) That said, this book's sprawling nature is part of its charm; it's not aimed at the attention-span-starved armchair quarterback, but the bug-eyed fan who owns those "New Zealand"-only disco mixes. There's nothing like a fan's book for fans; now let's see an updated version to accompany the new Blondie album!

Ink the Flesh.......2003-06-02

A labor of both love and lust, this hanging-on-the-telephone-book sized compilation feels like a fansite that somehow sneaked off the web and onto a printing press. An overemphasis on their 1999 comeback and fuzzy photos gets it docked a star, but it's hard to argue with such woozily wondrous excess, both the author's and the band's.
