5 out of 5 stars Gray Fox is superb. This book brings the past to life........2002-12-06

Davis is one of those rare authors who has the magical ability to to breathe life into the past through his writings. In addition to being a truly gifted writer, he is also an insightful and even-handed historian. Davis depicts Lee as a great, but not perfect general, as a complex figure who was willing to fight invading Northern armies, but who also hoped for an eventual end to slavery, as a man who while being vulnerable to pride sought the ideal of Christian humility, as kind and humane, but also willing to see men die in their thousands for the cause which he and they fought for. Moreover, while the book is written from the perspective of Lee and his army, the Northern side is still treated with respect and the same depth of understanding. Since many books on the Civil War are filled with hatred, blame, and arteficial and foolish one dimensional standards of morality, this is refreshing. I do not at all regret buying this book. I only regret that the author did not write more books. In addition to Gray Fox, I also highly recommend Davis's biography of Stonewall Jackson.

4 out of 5 stars Gray Fox.......2002-12-02

An excellent read on the life of Robert E. Lee. Davis does an good job in portraying the general's life, not overloading the reader with details. Those who have read more detailed books on Lee might find this one lacking, but I believe it to be worth your time and would make an excellent addition to ones Civil War library.

3 out of 5 stars Good chronology, but little more.......2002-06-11

I wouldn't say I disliked this book, but I did find it pretty short on both style and substance. It presents a good chronology of Lee's ACW campaigns, and might make a good prelude to a more detailed account if one wanted to get that chronology straight. However the prose is limp at best and details lacking. In his descriptions of the battles (especially) Burke Davis brings very little to life. For example, in the description of Chancellorsville, one never gets a sense that the battle is slipping out of Lee's control before his and Jackson's daring and innovative masterstroke changes the outcome completely.

Credit should be given for good use of excerpts from Lee's correspondance which paint a picture of a gentle and humane man doing his duty bravely despite a mounting sense of the long-term hoelessness of the situation. But, more interesting material can be found than this historical overview for anyone who wants something serious on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant man.......2002-02-06

Nicely written clear and concise facts from beginning to end. Burke Davis quotes and paraphrases several first hand accounts of civilians Confederate, and Union officers. Mr. Davis also recites several letters from General Robert E. Lee to family, Jefferson Davis, Confederate officers and General Grant.

The reading of this biography permeates vast knowledge of Robert E. Lee. Starting with his birth, education at West Point, emergence from the Mexican War, "with a reputation as the army's most talented young officer." Mr. Davis does a great job of conveying General Lee's concerns about the possibility of civil war. Robert E. Lee made the difficult decision to resign from the U.S. military. Here is a sample of General Lee's letter of resignation. "I have devoted all the best years of my life and all the ability I posed. During the whole time-more than a quarter of a century-I have experienced nothing but kindness from my superiors and a most cordial friendship from my comrades. To no one, General, have I been as much indebted as to yourself for uniform kindness and consideration. I shall carry to the grave the most grateful recollections of your kind consideration, and your name and fame will always be dear to me."

The book is worthy of reading I'll probably read it a few more times. Therefore five stars seems appropriate for a truly amazing book. This book is for folks from any geographical area. Whatever your race, creed, culture, religion is this book can be an enjoyable read. I leave you with one last quote this is Robert E. Lee's opinion of slavery. "There are few, I believe, in this enlightened age, who will acknowledge that slavery as an institution is a moral and political evil...I think it greater evil to the white than to the black race."

5 out of 5 stars Ray's reviews.......2001-09-30

This is a 'must read' for all Civil War book worms. Not only does it show the true man, Robert E. Lee, but a fine, historical review of the entire war. Prepare yourself for the last 35 pages, as you will read the best account of the surrender at Appomattox that I have ever read by ANY author.

This work aims to rectify this, by collecting together five lectures given to the Squiggle Foundation in London. Book Description

Those who learn from the past are not condemned to repeat it. In this revelatory book, family therapist Monica McGoldrick explains how the use of genograms (family trees) can bring to light a family's history of estrangement, alliance, divorce, or suicide, revealing intergenerational patterns that prove more than coincidental. McGoldrick's genograms of famous families, such as the Kennedys, Hepburns, Beethovens, and Bronts, complement discussion of the influence of birth order and sibling rivalry, family myths and secrets, cultural differences, couple relationships, and the pivotal role of loss. At the close of each chapter are questions that train the reader to think as researcher; with McGoldrick's guidance, we learn to mine previously untapped information about our own family patterns.

5 out of 5 stars My First Great Cookbook.......2007-08-21

We all have memories of cooking with Mom and her extremely well used cookbook. The one with the dog-eared pages and stains, their ultimate guide to new recipes and old techniques. When I turned 21, I decided it was time that I set out on the hunt to find my own staple cookbook and after looking at everything else out there, I picked this one.

From cover to cover, this book covers all of the information I needed to know but never knew. It has tons of great recipes ranging from the classics (like step by step instructions on how to cook my first Thanksgiving turkey)to new favorites like Pad Thai. The pictures are informative and inspiring. But there are also guides to nutrition, menus for different events and holidays, how to set a table and entertain. There are even explanations as to the different types of cheese or cuts of meat and where they come from.

This is not the type of book that just teaches you how to MAKE recipe. It is a book that teaches you how to know what to buy, when its in season, what it goes with and essentially how to CREATE a great variety of meals. Mom, I think I've found my cookbook. :)

                      5 out of 5 stars Favorite Cookbook!.......2006-07-06

My husband & I received this cookbook as a wedding present and we have yet to find a bad recipe and we've done a lot of them! Our friends now thing we are GREAT cooks and we enjoy sharing these great recipes with them. We've even given this cookbook as gifts multiple times. It is virtually the only cookbook we use! I love the tips and instructions in the front of each section too--really easy to follow and understand.

4 out of 5 stars Better suited for new cooks.......2005-10-05

I was so excited to buy this book after reading the reviews. However I must admit I'm a little disappointed as it didn't meet my expectation. if you subscribe to family circle magazine you will find this book a bit dull as most of the recipes are too plain (some recipes I saw on the magazine itself but I think FC and GH are sister magazines therefore similar stuff is expected) and also the magazine has better step by step instructions than this book. But none the less this is a great first cookbook for a new cook. It has nutrition info as well as many great tips even entertaining ideas. I must also give credit to the book for teaching me one or two new tricks.

5 out of 5 stars Now my friends think that I am a gourmet chef..........2004-05-03

This was the first cookbook I bought when I decided that I should start learning how to make food that I actually want to eat. There are lots and lots of pictures, showing the process of making a particular dish. This was great, as I didn't even know at that point what equipment I was supposed to make the food with. Anyway, I did a couple of recipes and then moved on to trying recipes from all kinds of books. Last week however, I did two recipes for my guests on my birthday, and they loved it. I did the Salmon with dill and caper sauce and also the Caramel Apple Tart. Other good dishes: Asparagus Gratin, Veal Stuffed with Fontina, Prosciutto, and Basil. I was not to excited about the Green Bean dish with vinaigrette (but then I am not crazy about green beans - but the picture looks good!) If you want to learn from scratch and know how to substitute ingredients and all that, then this book is maybe not the one. But I worked for me, because I wanted to see if I even liked a method of cooking before learning more about it (my mom used to sauté everything, broiling and all that were a new concepts to me).

5 out of 5 stars The Best Cookbook Available!.......2003-12-24

This is a wonderful book, and an excellent kitchen resource regardless of your experience level in the kitchen. The book contains a dizzying array of recipes in every conceivable category, and is well organized and illustrated. The illustrations, in fact, are what truly set this book apart: not only are the dishes well presented, explained, and photographed, but the steps involved in preparing the dishes are generally photographed to make it crystal clear how to do all required tasks.

Earlier in my life, I was a Chef at a high dollar restaurant serving mostly beef, so I was largely acquainted with the techniques associated with preparing most meats (and agree with the techniques used here), but I have never been especially knowledgeable about baking (and some other things). This book made it easy to learn the exact steps involved along the way to making every dish contained herein. I was especially enthused with the photographs taken at major preparation steps and decision points. This let me get it right the first time without having a recipe that was almost, but not quite, perfect.

Any level of cook from very beginner to advanced will love this book. There are dishes ranging from simple to complex (biased toward the simple on average) but all the ones I have made have worked well and tasted great. No kitchen should be without this book!

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you might be suffering from a gastrointestinal disorder. As many as one in four people experience these troublesome symptoms, and they don't get the problem adequately diagnosed and treated.

In The Sensitive Gut, readers will learn that the root causes of these symptoms are often a group of disorders -- reflux disease, dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), food allergies, or other conditions. The causes of these disorders are not fully understood, but their effects are quite real.

This valuable guide explains each of these disorders and, more important, describes how they are diagnosed and treated. You will learn:

Besides suggesting eating plans to soothe and minimize symptoms, The Sensitive Gut also evaluates new alternative approaches such as relaxation response training, hypnosis, and biofeedback. Finally, lists of questions are included to help readers make the most of their time with their doctors.

A reassuring and practical guide to managing common intestinal distress, The Sensitive Gut can improve the quality of life for millions of Americans.

This book gives a great overview of the various digestive maladies (and how there is no cure for most of them). But I cannot imagine anyone who has a reason to buy this book not knowing (1) they should avoid coffee & greasy/spicy food, (2) try to relax and (3) get plenty of excercise.

As W.C. Fields opined, "There's only one cure for insomnia; get plenty of sleep!"

5 out of 5 stars Good Information, very well written.......2003-02-27

This book covers most typical digestive disorders. It provides plenty of information about the underlying physiological basis for these ailments as well as details on diagnostic procedures and treatment. The author uses a sensible approach and does not try to solve the problems with miracle cures. Rather he talks about the benefits of and concerns with the various treatments. I think there is valuable information in this book for anyone with digestive maladies. I have read half a dozen books on this topic and this was the best on reflux (followed very closely by Cheskin and Lacy's Healing Heartburn).

                                            Book Description

Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) has a reputation as one of the leading composers of the twentieth century. But the story of his controversial role in history is still being told, and his full measure as a musician still being taken. This collection of essays goes far in expanding the traditional purview of Shostakovich's world, exploring the composer's creativity and art in terms of the expectations--historical, cultural, and political--that forged them.

The collection contains documents that appear for the first time in English. Letters that young "Miti" wrote to his mother offer a glimpse into his dreams and ambitions at the outset of his career. Shostakovich's answers to a 1927 questionnaire reveal much about his formative tastes in the arts and the way he experienced the creative process. His previously unknown letters to Stalin shed new light on Shostakovich's position within the Soviet artistic elite.

The essays delve into neglected aspects of Shostakovich's formidable legacy. Simon Morrison provides an in-depth examination of the choreography, costumes, décor, and music of his ballet The Bolt and Gerard McBurney of the musical references, parodies, and quotations in his operetta Moscow, Cheryomushki. David Fanning looks at Shostakovich's activities as a pedagogue and the mark they left on his students' and his own music. Peter J. Schmelz explores the composer's late-period adoption of twelve-tone writing in the context of the distinctively "Soviet" practice of serialism. Other contributors include Caryl Emerson, Christopher H. Gibbs, Levon Hakobian, Leonid Maximenkov, and Rosa Sadykhova. In a provocative concluding essay, Leon Botstein reflects on the different ways listeners approach the music of Shostakovich.

I'm one of those people who much prefer reading primary sources rather than secondary. I have not found many books on Kaplan to be nearly as illuminating as Kaplan himself. But this book blew me away. This is an extraordinarily well written, concise, well-researched, funny, and thoughtful book on Kaplan's life as an Orthodox rabbi at the same time as he was the gadfly of the Jewish Theological Seminary. If one wants to understand someone's philosophy, watch how they live, and in this, Kaplan's philosophy is shed in a very different light than the prescriptions found in his books.

Highly recommended. Great read for anyone interested in American Judaism, American Orthodoxy, Mordecai Kaplan, or even just the relationship between thinkers and their lives. A great tale.
