Book Description
He was the rising star of psychoanalysis, an intimate associate of Anna Freud and Kurt Eissler, a member of the Freudian “inner circle” with unrestricted access to the Freud Archives. And then Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson threw it all away because he dared to break the psychoanalytic community’s deepest taboo: he told the truth in public. As he unmasks the pretensions and abuses of this elite profession, Masson invites us to eavesdrop on the shockingly unorthodox analysis he was subjected to in the course of his analytic training. But the more prestige Masson attained, the more he came to doubt not only the integrity of his colleagues, but the validity of their method. In the end, he blew the whistle–fully aware of the personal and professional consequences.
With wit, wonder, and unflinching candor, Masson brilliantly exposes the cult of psychoanalysis and recounts his own self-propelled fall from grace. A sensation when it first appeared, Final Analysis is even more provocative and engrossing today. Written with passion and humor, this is the book that revealed a revered profession for what it was–and launched Masson on his true career.

Best by this author.......2005-09-25
I thought this book the best of the several books I have read by Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson.
A very good read, this will help you realise what does go on with psychotherapy - largely for the psychotherapist's benefit.
This author is worth reading and this is the book I think you are best off starting with.
This Is The One That Should Be Famous.......2005-01-15
Like many other people, and despite having serious doubts about psychotherapy myself, I was put off by the pamphleteering tone and over-comprehensiveness of "Against Therapy". In this book, Masson reveals the reasons behind "Against Therapy", which are very sound indeed. The ways in which absolute power can corrupt a therapist absolutely are made crystal clear, and are shown most convincingly by this highly intelligent and lucid first-person narrative. It is unsurprising that Masson should have been put off therapy completely by his experiences, and a pity, as his intelligence and dedication would have made him a great reformer.
EXCELLENT.......2000-01-29
Anyone even remotely associated with analysis, as either a patient, friend of a patient, or an analyst himself, should read this very informative and fascinating book. Clear and well-written, Masson does a wonderful job of exposing the clique of therapists who get rich by deceiving their patients, pretending to care and asserting knowledge they simply don't possess. A very engrossing book that explores a heretofore closed society.
Page turner...though not very significant.......1999-03-17
I found this book very interesting to read. I was very interested to hear a psychoanalyst's account of his training and membership in the psychoanalytic society. However, I found no news in the book; I wouldnt expect a circle that holds views which are Darwinian to refrain from acting like our prehistoric ancestors.
A wonderful expose! An eye opener........1998-10-23
Reading Masson's book, I was reminded time and again of the injustices and psychological abuse I experienced whilst undergoing Social Work training a number of years ago.
"Final Analysis", together with Masson's other treasures - "Against Therapy" and "Assault on Truth" provide, in my view, an accurate insight into the arrogance, self-righteousness and pretense to knowledge and care that often occurs both behind the scenes and quite openly in the world of Psychotherapy.
One of the better books I have read.

Book Description
If you or someone you love suffers from Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome (RSDS) also known as complex regional pain syndrome, this new book offers in-depth medical information, techniques, and strategies to help you deal with the syndrome's painful symptoms and psychological effects.
No one knows what causes Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome (RSDS), also known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), or why it follows an estimated 5% of all injuries. It's an under-diagnosed and under-treated neurological syndrome characterized by swelling, skin discoloration, stiffness, and intense and chronic burning pain. RSDS affects as many as six million Americansmost often set off by a relatively minor physical trauma, but can also follow surgery or more serious injury. The diagnosis is often missed in the early stages of the disease, and when left untreated the syndrome leaves the sufferer bedridden and in incredible pain. Peter Moskovitz, M.D., and Linda Lang offer for the first time to the lay reader an in-depth explanation of RSDS, the most current and effective treatments, and numerous self-help strategies for dealing with the syndrome's painful symptoms and psychological affects. From their work as Board of Directors for the RSDSAthe leading patient advocate and research foundation in the United States for RSDS patientsMoskovitz and Lang are able to help readers make sense of this complex syndrome, get appropriate medical care, manage their pain, and regain control over their lives.

RSD in real life.......2005-07-09
I am a kid who has rsd. Life with rsd is as close to hell as it gets. My doctor couldn't explain it, I couldn't explain it to my friends, I couldn't explain it to me: until I read this book. If you have rsd, kid or adult, I highly suggust READING THE BOOK! (It hurts a lot less than having a sympathedic block :)
One of the first steps to understanding.......2004-08-17
I was injured on the job Jan. 2004 and since that time have been diagnosed and treated for RSDS. It has limited & possibly stopped my working life, however, being lost in a workman's compensation buracracy, I had to begin to learn myself how to talk to the doctor about RSDS. Not every patient reacts the same, not every patient is limited in what they can do - BUT - every patient will see their life change somewhat due to pain. This book was my beginning as far as reading material to help me to understand RSDS. It is very informative, easy to read & understand and offers insight on taking control of your situation. It doesn't talk as much as I'd like about treatment plans and options. I have never taken so many drugs before and this book calmed my fears somewhat of becoming an addict. I will continue to learn about this pain syndrome because if I do not, I can't depend on the medical world to do it for me. A very good book to start off with if you have been diagnosed with RSDS.
Knowledge IS Power.......2004-03-16
Anyone who has CRPS (aka RSD or RSDS) MUST buy this book. There is so little accurate information available on the Internet, and what is available can sometimes be confusing or involve too many words that you need a PhD to comprehend. This book does a good job of explaining the basics of the nervous system and CRPS, and spends a lot of time discussing how to live with the disease. I will say that there isn't that much in depth information about treatment options, which is unfortunate. However, that's the only drawback, and with Living with RSDS to start you out, you can find reputable sites on the Web and start an intelligent dialogue with your doctor.
A Review of LIVING WITH RSD by Lang & Moskovitz.......2004-03-01
For all those touched directly or indirectly by reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome (RSDS), LIVING WITH RSDS by Linda Lang and Peter Moskovitz, M.D., is a must-read.
In a thorough but entirely clear and readable manner, this guidebook illuminates every aspect of RSDS. A chronic pain disorder, RSDS not only changes--often drastically--the lives of sufferers but also affects the people who care about them.
For the patient, LIVING WITH RSDS is a valuable tool, a combination of medical information and practical advice. For the patient's family and friends, it's a much needed doorway to a keener understanding of just what the RSDS patient is up against physically and psychologically.
For every reader, patient and nonpatient alike, the interwoven personal story of Linda Lang, one of the authors, has staying power. An RSDS patient herself for the past decade, she shares her own experience and hard-won insights in an appealingly intimate tone that affirms the possibilities of a life well lived in spite of illness.
This is an Excellent Book for people afflicted With RSDS........2003-07-04
It goes chapter by chapter explaining this horrible disease to
family members and the medical community. This is an illness
that not only affects the patient, but their marriage, relationships, children, and their caretaker. No matter what
your situation, it affects your whole life.
It gives examples of personal stories of people's lives that
have changed forever.Although all stories and lives differ,
all complain of pain in the upper or lower limbs.
The Hallmark symtom is PAIN, unrelenting PAIN.
Most of these victims turn up in the E.R., where if you are
fortunate one or two professionals have heard of RSD and
will medicate you and refer you to a pain clinic.
Usually, patients are given medicine and told not to bother
the E.R. staff with a chronic illness.Unrelenting PAIN is
Hell on Earth. The suicide rate for this disorder is 20%.
Although women have the highest rate of illness-it can
strike men and even chidren.
People are sick and in pain but because so little has been
written of this disorder, they must fight to get S.S.D
or help of any kind.
RSD( reflex sympathetic dystrophy)is a neurological disease
the way Multiple Scerlosis is also neurological.
We also know very little of coping. Coping has been defined as the ability to deal with a situation.Trying to cope with pain, suffering, and disability creates emotional distress-the daily life of a person with RSDS.
Fortunately, the internet is bring patients closer and people are demanding attention and a cure... This book reminds you not to become your disease. If you
are in great pain, you will become angry at that statement.
If you are being treated and have some good days, I agree.
If you find friends on the net you can exchange ideas.
Also, you can build a friedship of similiar interests, books, movies, sports, recipes, decorating, etc. that take your mind off pain and validate you as a person.
There were some palliative measures not mentioned that
disappointed me.Patients are now recomended to have
aquatherapy in a heated pool. It is easier on the body and
more beneficial to a damaged part. There are many new drugs
and research not mentioned that show promise.
I agree with Keith, sympathectomies are usually not done because the ganglion of nerves grows back after giving a person
relief for 12 to 18 months. When the nerves grow back they
are angry and more painful. The disease process may also
spread to other parts of the body.
On the whole, this book gives some comfort issues at the
back-although I question the one of putting clothes in a
freezer, because ice does so much damage, but maybe it is
a special case. Keeping a pillow with you is almost a
necessity.
There is a good chapter on isolation. In the beginning
everyone tends to isolate, because of the pain.
Music in Church makes you hurt, large groups of people and
noise all cause more pain, so you gradually eliminate
your favorite places and people.
Later,if you have some control of pain or do better at
different times of day, do become active. If you can only distribute fliers or put up posters for RSD-let that be your
contribution. A little charity work goes a long way.Send a
card. Let someone know you think of them. Some people are too overwhelmed just getting through the day but you can let them know you care. Space yourself and your time and you will
find you can enjoy life more.
Share this book with your family and they will understand
that people with RSD can sometimes spend time with you
and other times cannot. They will feel less rejected.
Book Description
The history of food and drink in America is an exciting tale of unexpected twists and turns that are even more amusing than the oft-repeated myths. It is a story filled with hot-shot inventors, high-flying promoters, risk-taking growers, efficiency-conscious processors, hard-hitting advertisers, and lip-smacking consumers--all of whom have contributed to transforming lowly American food into a worldwide culinary delight. In 800 intriguing articles (from over 200 contributors), the Oxford Encyclopedia of Food and Drink in America covers the significant events, inventions, and social movements in American history that have affected the way Americans view, prepare, and consume food and drink. In an A-Z format, this two-volume set details the regions, people, ingredients, foods, drinks, publications, advertising, companies, historical periods, and political and economic aspects pertinent to American cuisine. With contributions from academia, industry, and the culinary world, the Encyclopedia provides a far-ranging yet cohesive account of American history and culture from a gastronomic perspective. From the extravagant feasts of Diamond Jim Brady in the Gilded Age to the fad diets and the health consciousness of today, the status and cultural significance of American food and rink has transformed throughout the years. With interesting anecdotes, informative sidebars, and generous bibliographies, the Encyclopedia of Food and Drink in America will captivate readers--from scholars and food lovers everywhere--in this journey through American culinary history.

A Great Value for $50.......2007-08-23
If you're interested in food, I highly recommend this set at this price. Open either volume to any page and you'll find something interesting, from articles on Beatrice and Beech-nut foods to the history of popcorn to twinkies. (Note - this is NOT a cookbook. It's truly an encyclopedia.) For the price of going out to dinner, you'll get a wealth of information that will provide lots of conversation for the next time you go out to dinner!

Good but not great.......2005-05-25
I picked up this set because I immensely enjoy reading the Oxford Companion to Food and refer to it often.
Unfortunately, while the scope of the OEFDA is wide and many of the articles are informative and interesting, the quality of the writing is not as high as in the OCF. Perhaps Oxford University Press thought it needed to make this book "accessible" to Americans by limiting the authors to writing at an 8th grade level.
There also are factual inconsistencies throughout the book. For example, Ruffles potato chips are said to have been launched during either the 1950's or the 1970's, depending on which article about snacks you happen to be reading. This sort of sloppy editing and fact-checking is inexcusable, especially from a university press.
Bottom line: the OEFDA is an admirable attempt at creating a comprehensive survey of American food history, but there are some glaring flaws. I recommend starting with the OCF.
Great Source on Culinary History,Business, and Lore.......2005-01-10
`The Encyclopedia of Food and Wine in America' is a great 1500 page compilation of excellently written articles on virtually every aspect of the history, education, manufacture, marketing, personalities, and writing about food in America. Practically the only thing it does not include is recipes or cooking. Even sidebars whose label suggests a proper place for a recipe such as the sidebar on shoofly pie gives not one hint about how to make this delicious dessert. Given the size of the subject, it is not at all surprising that the editors have left these out, as both recipes and kitchen science can both be considered without nationality, plus the fact that there are thousands of good cookbooks and a score of books on food science available today, so why not focus on things which are not commonly covered in these books. This means that this volume can sit beside the `Larousse Gastronomique' with only a very small amount of overlap in material. These two giant books have two entirely different objectives. While both works will have articles on potatoes, Larousse will tell you how to cook them, but Oxford will tell us were they are grown, their commercial importance, nutritional importance, and their appearance in cartoons.
So, unlike Larousse, you are much more inclined to simply read the articles in these volumes for your own entertainment as much as for your need to know something. The articles are filled to the brim with interesting trivia about American food. One favorite item in the article about Spam is the fact that the word `Spam' became associated with junk e-mail on the strength of a Monty Python skit which did the same kind of number on Spam as the movie `Blazing Saddles' did on western films. Another discovery was the renaming of sauerkraut to `Liberty Cabbage' after World War I. In this way, the book follows the style of the Encyclopedia Britannica that leans heavily toward long, detailed articles rather than shorter articles with a greater chance of redundancy, especially with a hundred or more independent contributors.
It would probably take the average foodie about five minutes of searching through these volumes to find something they miss. My first sense of something being missing was when there were articles about Charlie Trotter, Alice Waters, and Rick Bayless, but no articles on Thomas Keller, Jeremiah Tower, or Richard Olney. I would not feel the absence so acutely if the editors had given us biographies on Julia Child, James Beard, Craig Claiborne, and M.F.K. Fisher and stopped there, as all four of these figures are so obviously at the very top of the heap in their influence on American eating and food writing. On the other hand, Tower and Olney between them are probably as much an influence on culinary professionals in the United States as Alice Waters. While Olney spent much of his life living in France, he was born in Iowa and all of his most influential works, most notably his editorship of the Time-Life culinary series of books in the 1960s was aimed at American audiences. This series is mentioned twice in the long article on cookbooks with no mention of Olney as the editor, a position recommended to the publishers by James Beard. Regarding Keller and Trotter, for example, both have received the James Beard best chef in the country award and of the books attributed to these two chefs, I much prefer the two from Keller than the three from Trotter which I have reviewed. I suspect the difference in the eyes of the editors is Trotter's earlier ascendancy, his substantial charitable activities, and his better than average culinary instruction TV shows.
These quibbles aside, I am genuinely impressed by the overall quality of the writing in the thousands of articles in this work. The biographical articles all begin with a crisp statement of the importance of the subject to American culinary history. In spite of the very large number of writers, all articles seem to share this same matter of factness, with virtually no sentimentality or sensationalism. One joggling act that must have challanged the editors is how to limit the book to `American' subjects. And, they seem to have accomplished this with great good judgment. In place of any mention of French or Italian or Japanese or Korean or East Indian or Chinese subjects, the editors have given us articles on `Italian-American' food and `German-American' food. I know the German-American culinary world better than any other and I give the author of this article high marks for capturing the big picture and not limiting himself to the very easy subject of the `Pennsylvania Dutch' cuisine. Although the Amish and Mennonite communities of Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, and the Carolinas are at the heart of the German / American food tradition, the greater German influence is much broader, overlapping, for example, the Jewish-American culinary world and even the influences from France and Italy.
By far the best use for this work is as a starting point for serious culinary research or simply noodling around the literature of cookery for fun. In addition to the articles with their excellent bibliographies, there are appendices on general food bibliography, general wine bibliography, list of food periodicals and web sites, major food subject reference libraries, major food museums, food organizations, and food festivals.
Be warned that in spite of the title, wine gets much less than half the volume of ink spilled in these volumes. I also detected a few minor editing mistakes and omissions. The web site for the cable `Food Network' is listed as www.foodtv.com, but this was changed close to two years ago to www.foodnetwork.com. This little mistake is less easy to understand since the article on Julia Child notes her death which occurred about 6 months ago. Still, this book is a great source of entertainment and information for foodies and foodie scholars.
Expensive, but of high quality as a reference and entertainment.
As much fun as a really, great meal!.......2004-12-30
What makes this encyclopedia different from most other such comprehensive authoritative sources of information? It's a pure delight to read! Whether it's discussing food mythology or the traditions of ethnic cookery or just any other culinary subject, these volumes are a great entertainment as well as real education. Truly a labor of love on the part of excellent, dedicated scholars and editors, it's a great gift for any American who takes pleasure in reading as well as eating and drinking.

Customer Reviews:
Good Advice!.......2007-02-12
This is a great book for anyone who sews or mends. It covers a lot of things that can go wrong while you're sewing -- accidents that you might think have just ruined your entire project, but which can actually be fixed if you're patient and careful, as well as things beyond your control, like holes or flaws in the fabric you're sewing with.
Filled with excellent advice, highly recommended!
Sewing 911.......2006-04-25
I found this book while away travelling. First of all, I like the hard cover and internal spiral. This book covers a lot of problems we sewists come across. Loads of fitting issues are addressed as well as those awful ironing accidents we tend to have.
There are tips on what to do when you don't have enough fabric and how to fix those nasty buttonhole problems. I really enjoy the sense of humor that Barbara Deckert showed in the book. The book also gives solutions to machine problems and there is a very good stain removal chart at the end of the book.
Her tips are sensible and helpful. I am very glad I stopped to purchase it.
Good info,, especially if you've been at it a while........2003-03-06
I haven't been able to really use this book quite the way I thought, but it has come in handy quite a few times. Very good for those "oops" moments!
Sewing 911.......2001-11-03
This is an excellent book for "disaster contros" for the inexperienced or experienced sewer (I hesitate to say "seamstress--probably not politically correct). She has a wealth of very practical advice for fixing or disguising problems ranging from scorched places from errant iron placement to creative solutions when suddenly you discover that there isn't enough fabric. She has an extensive section on stain removal, which is extremely useful. She knows what to do when that garment that one just lengthened still bears the tell-tale line where the hem was. She knows what to do when that buttonhole on the front of your garment looks bad or is too big or too small. She not only tells and has illustrations showing how to mend spots where there is a hole or the seam is trimmed too close or cut clear through; she also has very creative suggestions to disguise such things when mending them isn't practical. She knows how to fix it if the right and left sides of the front of a double breasted garment are not the same length, or if the underneath layer sags. This is a really useful book for anyone who sews. It opens up to lie flat so that as one works on a problem, using the book as a guide, one doesn't have to fight the book to make it stay open. The book, itself, does not present yet another problem. I highly recommend this book as an ideal gift for anyone who sews, including one's self.
Sewing 911 Came to My Rescue!.......2001-10-22
Don't feel like the Lone Ranger if you make an occasional sewing boo-boo. We all do, and author Barbara Deckert encourages us, through her imaginative examples, to find fashionable fixes for those annoying errors.
Pesky puckers on a lapel? Neckline gaping immodestly? Bungled buttonhole? Now there's no need to toss that garment aside in frustration. Barbara addresses these and dozens more sewing emergencies with highly creative but perfectly do-able
solutions. Concise, engaging, and packed with information, Sewing 911 will take the stress out of those inevitable sewing
mistakes by sparking the sewer's aptitude for creative problem solving.
I finished this book in one sitting because I was so riveted by the possibilities. Find out how disguising an accidental snip in your fabric can actually take your garment to the next level - from ordinary to designer-detail stunning.
Sewing enthusiasts have long needed an author who is not afraid to admit that she, too, encounters the occasional "oops!" Barbara Deckert has made this taboo topic highly approachable and even fun to deal with. Sewing 911 is a must-have reference for every sewer's shelf.

The process of adoption - be it an open or a closed adoption, domestic or international - is seldom simple, short, or standardized. It can often take many years of frustrating and expensive searching before parents can bring an infant or child home, and once they do, they face a whole new set of challenges as they learn together to be a family.
The Unofficial Guide to Adopting a Child gives prospective adoptive parents the inside scoop on:
- How long it will really take to adopt, and how much it will cost
- What the challelnges are for single people, older couples, and gay lesbian couples seeking to adopt
- What the all-important home study entails -- from writing the autobiographical statement to creating a child-friendly atmosphere
- What questions to ask agency personnel and birth parents -- and what questions to refuse to answer

Fringe therapies and beliefs about adoption.......2005-06-15
This well-meaning book unfortunately presents an entire chapter on ideas about Reactive Attachment Disorder derived from the belief system of a "fringe therapy" and not on scientific understanding of early personality development. In a list of organizations that are sources of help for adoptive parents, the book includes the "Attachment Center at Evergreen", at the time of publication a hotbed of treatments involving physical restraint and emotional intimidation of children. A child's death at the hands of therapists occurred in the year that this book was published and was connected with some of the ideas discussed
by the author. I would hope that a revised version of this publication would be more cautious about this topic. Meanwhile, readers should be warned that this edition's discussion of Reactive Attachment Disorder, and of the whole issue of attachment, is profoundly inaccurate and deceptive.

Wow Excellent Research Resource.......2003-02-16
I bought this book randomly hoping that after finding really poorly put together books on Adoption both domestic and international this one would be the key. I am currently writing a research paper contrasting and comparing international and domestic adoption for school. Trust me this book is excellent and outlining the process in detail for someone looking deeply into the multi faceted world of adoption.
I would also recommend books by Lois Gilman, Lee Varon and Myra Alperson- the multicultural resource book
Great Job.......2000-10-16
The author is my mother. I feel she did a great job of listing the highs and lows of adopting a child, like me. I hope that for those who put a thought into adopting a child that they read this book and understand where she is coming from. Adopting a child could be difficult but most of the time it is worth it. Good job Mom!
Unofficial Guide to Adopting a Child is my official resource.......2000-07-23
The Unofficial Guide to Adopting a child is a extremely helpful resource. I appreciated the fact the author is the coordinator of the Vermont Adoptive Parent Support Network and is involved in adoptive training and workshops for parents and professionals. She is experienced in the challenging needs of adoptive children and has inside information. I like the way the book was formatted.
The book gives you comprehensive coverage of the necessary and vital information you'll need in order to decide if foreign or domestic adoption is right for you and if so how to go about it step by step. The information is up to date and presented in a sensible, concise, readable and applicable fashion.
I also felt the special features like: what to watch out for, moneysavers, timesavers and bright ideas were extemely pertinent and helpful. There is a very complete appendix in the back of the book with many valuable resources for both domestic and foreign adoption included.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone considering or in the process of adopting a child.

No sugar coating.......2005-10-26
David A. Adler may be the author of the best-selling Cam Jansen mystery series for children, but he struck a slightly sour note in this story book concerning two children murdered during the Holocaust. The facts presented are not the usual storybook material.
However, Adler cannot be blamed: the subject matter is difficult to handle for children. The fact is, most children's novels on this topic have heroes and heroines who somehow escape the terrible fate that in fact claimed the majority of Jewish children in Europe--1.5 million, according to official records.
Adler, in telling the tale of two children who did NOT survive--with details given to him by their respective siblings, who did--takes off that sugar coating.
I'd agree that this book is not suitable for little children, but second, third and fourth graders who still like picture books would find it informative. If you don't mind telling your children the ugly truth about the Holocaust and its young victims, this is as good a place as any to start.

Good, but there are better. . ........2003-07-16
"Hilde and Eli" is a good book about the Holocaust and its effects on children; however, there are better books that recount this experience. The picture book format is misleading because the information (and the blunt way in which it is presented) is certainly not suitable for young children. Children in 4th-5th-and 6th grades would find it informative, though I doubt they would pick up a picture book readily. In the context of a classroom discussion, it may serve its purpose - to inform about a devastating event in the history of humanity.
I liked this book it talks about Hitler & the Holocaust.......1998-03-03
