Going Places no one Dared!.......2003-02-16
What great story!... I was taken places no one dare go. As a young person, I never had to deal with war and the faces of war. Like me, the readers will find themselves right in the middle of it war with all it's force, fear and gallantry. Mr. Pinn also reveals an Infantry mans view of histroy and troubled times. For those of you who may be wanting to know more about war, ... you must read this book. Mr. Pinn represents your husbands, your sons and all those who may be called to serve. As fearful as it was it also contained a lot of lighter moments. Funny stories and amazing encounters. A must read!
A must read for those that served, and those that didn't.......2003-01-26
Once in a while a great man walks into our lives; a man whose very persona is exemplified in his very stare. One such man was Lionel Pinn. Master Sergeant Pinn served in not one, not two, not three, but four different combat areanas. WWII, Korea, Laos and Vietnam saw Mr. Pinn, or Choo-Choo as he was known to many, fight and overcome the enemy. In three different combat theaters Pinny was taken prisoner, and escaped each time. He met and knew Jacki Kennedy, drank whiskey with Ira Hayes-the native American Indian who was one of the infantrymen immortalized in the depiction of the flag raising at Iwo Jima, and worked security for Frank Sinatra. Lionel was half Micmac and half Osage Indian, and more importantly an American.
I was fortunate enough to know Lionel, and sat with him at his home on occassion listening to him talk about the weather and the "three old maids" building a house next to his. Never did he discuss his combat missions or time served in the military with me; never did I ask questions. I have known several war veterans, and knew better than to broach the subject--besides, I just enjoyed Lionel's company, and as he remarked in his book, "I don't discuss war with those that never fought. They don't understand."
Oftentimes, I remarked to my wife that I regretted not asking Lionel if I could take a tape recorder with me to interview him. Fortunately for us all a reporter had enough foresight to do that very thing. I recently finished the book published about this little known American icon, Hear the Bugles Calling (My Three Wars as a Combat Infantryman). Lionel was the recipient of three combat infantryman badges, and two silver stars abrazoned the metals on the blue ribbon. Lionel recently died of Leukemia in 1999, the result of being present in Nevada for the witnessing of four atomic bomb detonations.
His is a story for anyone interested in courage. I'm lucky to have called him friend.........
My Dad's Book.......2002-06-15
I am the son of Lionel "Choo Choo" Pinn and I am very honored by that distinction. Knowing my Dad as well as I did, I know he would be satisfied with this book and I am very happy to recommend it. It does a great job at sharing a little bit about a remarkable life. Reading the stories was like hearing him tell the stories. All my life I have been fortunate to get a glimpse into the world of my Dad. He did not share a whole lot when I was younger but as I got older he did finally begin to start telling the stories and I am glad I was there to hear them.
The book will weave you through three different wars (WWII, Korea and Vietnam) and his first hand account of the events of those conflicts, the big picture of the planning and strategies of war as well as the view point from the fox-hole. Dad was also on special assignment in Grenada in the early 1980's and traveled the world over in support of his MIA/POW comrades. At the age of 68 he tried his best to get to Desert Storm but was denied the opportunity. This book will also introduce you to some one-of-a-kind moments and people. These are "backs against the wall" kinds of situations that will never leave your memory. Chief Red Hawk, as he was know by his tribe, was also extremely proud of his Native American heritage and felt strongly that it was through those roots that he was able to survive all that he did. 9 Purple Hearts, the Silver and Bronze Stars, Distinguish Service Cross and Master Parachutist were just a few of the honors he worn over his heart but the one that he was most proud of, the one that he presented at the Vietnam Memorial Wall, the one he had in his pocket the day I buried him at Arlington National Cemetery was the "Combat Infantry Badge" (CIB) with 2 Stars. To stand in the rarified air of a warrior who gave it all in three different wars had deeper meaning than anything else in his career.
Unfortunately his death in 1999 would never allow him the opportunity to see his finished product however; the stories live on in the book and hearts of all of us who knew him. He once told me as he approached the end of his life that "I was able to survive all these gun shots and hand-grenades because I could get my hands on them but I can't reach this damn cancer and that's got me worried." Co-author Frank Sikora does an outstanding job at letting that story be told.
Like my Dad's life, the only thing I regret about the book is that it was far too short. For those of you who have served and carried the torch of freedom for our country, I promise you will not be disappointed. For those of you who want to know more about this man and his life, beyond the book, please let me know, I would be happy to share!

Finally a guide that makes sense!.......2005-06-22
There are so many how to books on weight loss that the brain begins to lose focus so the body never benefits. What these two individuals have done is write a guide that is easy to read, easy to use, and something that will benefit you forever.
The chapters help you identify your body type, determine your ideal body weight, decipher misleading food labels, and help you find the exercise plan that is right for you. The tables and worksheets included were fantastic, making it easy to see what you did right and what you need to correct the next time. The book is very positive recognizing that not everyone will lose weight the same way, helping you create an individual plan. Whatever "diet" you decide is the best for you, this book on it's own or in conjunction with another diet plan is a sure bet on success. No quick fixes here, but a truly educated way of learning about your body, the foods you eat, and the physical activity necessary to keep it all together.
Hidden (Nutrition) Secrets Revealed!.......2005-04-29
I am looking at Nutrition Labels now, thanks to this book.
I traded in the "Lite" crackers from the health food store (0% fiber and loaded with sodium) for the Whole Wheat ones with 12% fiber (and less salt).
And guess what? The high fiber ones made me feel fuller and so, I didn't need as many with my luncheon salad!

It works!.......2005-04-27
Weight Loss Tracker is a great book for those who are searching for a lifestyle change and ultimately, permanant weight loss. The authors of the text help readers to understand that there is no magic cure for taking off the pounds. Instead, readers learn that subtle changes in diet and consistent exercise habits can make all of the difference. In an age of gastric bypass, freeze-dried packaged foods, and food deprivation as ways to weight loss, this book is a welcome alternative.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2007-01-20
I recently bought a slow cooker and needed a good slow cooker book. I looked at lots of books out there. There's one for just about everything, but this book was exactly what I was looking for. I wanted minimal prep work on the food before it goes into the cooker, and recipes that were NOT made with boxes and cans of highly-processed foods. This book achieves both, with a very nice variety of recipes including desserts. Many of the recipes give tips on how they can be made light or vegetarian. It has all the recipes you've heard about over the years and includes some very interesting new ones. I truly appreciate the German recipes they've adapted for the crockpot like Gulaschsuppe and Currywurst which are family favorites. Every recipe I've tried, I've liked. I guess the only possible drawbacks are the way it's set up, and the lack of calorie information. I think it's nice that the recipes are categorized by season, but I don't use the book that way since I think it makes things hard to find. I use the index to find what I need and then dog ear the pages so I can find them again. The Cauliflower soup is fantastic by the way.
On time and in good condition as promised.......2007-01-12
No surprises and was shipped quickly. Since this was a Christmas present, it was important to receive it soon. I am happy with my purchase.
Excellent Book on Slow Cooker Versatility!.......2006-08-25
I found a number of very tasty recipes in this cookbook. I would highly recommend it!

A comprehensive guide to the use of expanded plastic foam materials in model aircraft. Foam is a relatively new material for modelmakers, and many are still not familiar with all the necessary information and techniques, the latest choices available, and the associated materials, tools and glues.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Book.......2007-08-02
Anyone interested in learning the basics of foam model construction would be well advised to pick up a copy of this book. Everything is written in a clear, easy-to-understand text that takes one through making tools, cutting foam, covering and sheeting methods, and other modeling uses for foam.
It is highly recommended.
Fascinating book of highly practical techniques.......2004-10-21
Even though I just bought this book (not from Amazon), my edition appears to be the 1999 one, not 2000. At any rate, the book is really excellent. What impressed me most was the simple design of the tools employed, from the hot wire cutter to the vacuum bagger, all appear to be buildable from stuff at the local auto parts store, junkyard, and hardware store. Things like a cheap auto battery charger, old refrigerator compressor, etc. Nothing exotic.
Not only that, but after describing how to build wings from templates, he gives an explanation of how to draw the templates, with details on a half-dozen popular wing shapes. Like everything else in the book, he takes you through it step-by-step, leaving nothing out.
Overall, I think this must be one of the best "how to" books I've ever read.
Radio Control Foam Modelling.......2002-01-14
Thank you NEXUS Special Interest Books (UK) for putting this book back in circulation. If anyone is even thinking about building their first Foamie, this book is a must, for it will answer your basic questions on the "dos and don't" about FOAM, a very well though out book for any modeller's first Foam aeroplane.. Thank You David Thomas, Sid King
Great book for beginners and intermediate skilled modellers.......2001-06-07
Even though the book was written in Europe (it refers to some materials, which are hard to find in the U.S.), its quite useful and well written. I consider myself an experienced scratch builder, but I found a lot of useful information, building techniques, and construction ideas in this book. Highly recommend to everybody using foam in the airplane construction.

One look at these fabulous photos and you'll agree: summer bulbs blossom into some of the most fantastic flowers ever seen. Yet most gardening books ignore them in favor of springtime's bounty. Don't assume there's nothing more once the riotous spring bloom of tulips and daffodils fade; here are scores of extravagant bulbs to brighten the summer garden--not only the familiar lily and gladiolus but also exotics such as the South African nerine, the Near Eastern eremurus, and the Asian colocasia. An encyclopedia highlights the favorites of bulb experts from all the different regions, with lovely photos and foolproof advice on cultivation and care. Try the clever and creative ways of combining summer bulbs with more common garden plants in beds and borders, of naturalizing them in the landscape, and of growing them in containers. They'll turn your garden into the hottest one in the neighborhood!

As I Live and Breathe: Notes of a Patient-Doctor
ASIN: 0802135838 |
Amazon.com
Ben Watt's Patient is not the memoir one might expect from half of the pop duo Everything But The Girl. This is no star diary, no ordinary account of songwriting or performances, but a harrowing tale of Watt's battle with a rare life- threatening disease that ravaged his innards and left him with only three feet of intestine. This brush with death compelled Watt to write--the first thing he's "done apart from making records," and Patientchronicles the months of intense pain and idleness he spent in hospitals. Watt's prose, in a simple lyrical style that recall his songs, pulls the reader to his bedside as he alternates between drug-induced hazes and excruciatingly clear visions of his life. The disorientation and fear grow more palpable as his story unfolds. He likens his first major illness to a trip up a mountain: bearings are lost as vestiges of individuality and pride fall away in the fight for survival. Day and night become indistinguishable, and the line between awareness and unconsciousness blurs. Despite the nightmarish nature of his ordeal, Watt manages tender reflections on his family life and his relationship with fellow bandmember and girlfriend, Tracey Thorn.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating Read from an Unexpected Source.......2006-01-10
I'd been a fan of EBTG for quite awhile before this book came out. Their soothing music has always been a favorite so I was really interested to see what this book was all about.
It turned out to be a very disturbing account of Ben Watt's freak-show illness, blow by blow. His commentary is riveting and one gets the feeling that he does not feel sorry for himself in the least, but instead follows his own story as if he is an observer who also happens to be its main character.
I was heartened to read toward the end of the book Watt's own musings on what may have brought all his health problems about. Though he left it vague, his illness seems to be among those new "diseases of civilization" caused by many factors in our surroundings that lead to hard-to-define ailments where environmental toxicity and the overuse of pharmaceutical medicines are certainly not to be discounted.
In any case it seems that his passion for music transcended all, and was at least in part a contributor to his recovery. Most of all he deserves a thanks for telling his story, unadulterated. For sure it has made this reader not feel so isolated.
Lyrical and spiritual in its unique perspective.......2005-04-23
I purchase this book many years ago simply because I was a big ebtg fan. I casually knew what he had been thorugh and felt terrible for him, but was going through the process of losing and then grieving for a loved one.
When I read the book, it offered me a perspective on what life may have been like for my loved one as he suffered illness. What a wonderful gift Ben Watt has given. He writes without self-pity, in his lyrical style without being flowery or glossing over the ugliness of illness. I am so glad that he survived for selfish reasons-the music he (&Tracey) has(have) produced (before and after the illness) has been a diverse gift to the world.
And I am so greatful that he wrote this book. Experiencing the death of a loved one through being a spectator to horrible illness, was, in a strange way one of life's best gifts to me. No I didn't learn to be greatful for my health and all that crap-I learned that true joy comes from giving to another and expecting nothing in return. Ben Watt's Patient, gave me an extra perspective on that experience, and sometimes helps me to remember the life-lesson from it all.
In summation, read Patient for more of Watt's lyrical writing, read it to find a surprisingly good story with plot twists and turns, read it to learn what severe illness truly is. Fascinating. A gift-thank you.
Everything But The Hype........2003-09-26
The fact that Watt's story lacks a significant plot (outside of the onset, diagnosis, and treatment of his rare condition) is largely forgivable. For those of us who know Watt primarily as a musician/songwriter, the somewhat static storyline here is acceptable. All that's missing from "Patient" is Everything But The Girl's enlightening bed of music to be heard under Ben's delicately articulated prose. Typical of many great songs, Watt occasionally blurs the line between the first- and third-person narration, and "Patient" is better off for it. Perhaps even better than the great writing, though, is the genuine and intimate portal into the lives of Ben and Tracey rarely afforded to EBTG fans. It's a relatively short read, but each page gives plenty to be absorbed as the result of Ben's crafty alliteration and his uncensored, yet careful, approach to the fog of medical lexicon. Not for the weak of heart--or stomach--Watt's book exacts distinct feelings of sobriety and contemplation...with an ending portrait that expertly convey's his trademark understated hope.
Memorable, insightful.......2003-08-08
I'll admit I picked this up mostly out of curiosity as a longtime fan of Everything But the Girl. What kept me reading, however, was Ben Watt's skill as a writer. His story is gripping and harrowing, but told with a dry wit and wonderful observations. This book is not just about one man coming to terms with serious illness, but how that experience affected his relationships with his loved ones and his view of himself. This would be a great book for anyone in the health care field to read; it gives you a sense of the patient as a full human being, not just a "problem" to be fixed. Ben Watt's writing skills are as strong as his ample skills as a musician/songwriter. This book has my highest recommendation.
Interesting Phenomenon.......2003-03-24
To be clear, I have not read this book. I would only like to comment on the book as emblematic of an interesting phenomenon: that one of the main symptoms of chronic illness is the desire to talk about it to anyone who will listen. The sufferer may rationalize this urge by saying that it is an attempt to reach out for help. But what is interesting is that usually the sufferer is most long-winded about his illness to people he deems unlikely of providing any direct assistance.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting but not even close to a scholarly study.......2007-01-13
Of the six groups of 'Jews' that Parfitt visited, there are only three that are truly 'lost'. The Jews of Syria are well known, they are just trapped in the politics of the Middle East. The Bagdadi and Bet Israel of the area near Bombay have been known about for years; as are the Jews of Singapore who are the remnant of Bagdadis who were truly a trading colony. Those of the 'Secret Tribe of Zebulun' (my namesake) are modern Japanese who are looking for spirituality based on the Old Testament and are more like Christians with hebraic tendencies (they accept Jesus).
At least in this book he makes a tangential look at the people of eastern India who have claimed to be a lost tribe for many years. To read more about this Tribe you should read Hillel Halkin's "Across the Sabbath River".
The two true lost tribes, are the Falashas of Ethiopia (Tribe of Dan) and the BaLemba of Zimbabwe/South Africa. A major portion of the Falashas were gotten out of Ethiopia in the 1980s and are settled in Israel as part of "Operaton Moses".
The Lemba have recently been in the news as Parfait and some scientists have raised an amazing probability to prove they are truly descendents of a Jewish tribe. A few years ago, a Kohain gene (found among both the Sephardi and Ashkenaz, at a rate of greater than 50%, as opposed to 5-6% in the general Jewish population, and under 2% in Europeans) was identified by some Israeli researchers. When the did DNA studies on the Lemba (who are separated into twelve clans), the senior clan had a rate of 50% of the Kohain gene, and the general Lemba community was at 5%. So make up your own mind.
