Book Description

The central figure of Hero on Three Continents is Sir Henry Brown, born 1901, into a prominent Anglo-Jewish family. Henry's two elder brothers were killed in action on the Western Front during World War I, an experience that had an immeasurable impact on young Henry.

After leaving Eton in 1919, Henry, too young for military service in the Great War, took a first-class honors degree in oriental languages at Oxford University. He then pursued a military career at Sandhurst, and afterwards served on the staff of Lord Reading, Viceroy in India. While in India in 1926, he married Henrietta, the younger daughter of the 11th Duke of Shropshire.

After service in India, Henry was posted to Kenya and was awarded the Military Cross for a heroic defusement of explosives in the African hillside. He served in the War Office and as an instructor at England's famed military academy, Sandhurst, until he was posted to Berlin in 1935 as military attaché, under the covert direction of Winston Churchill, Chaim Weizmann, and the Marquess of Reading.

This was a difficult assignment -- to say the least, for a Jew during Hitler's rise in Germany. He witnessed contagious anti-Semitism after the implementation of the Nuremberg Laws. His wife threw herself enthusiastically into the upper echelons of the Nazi hierarchy, greatly influenced by the force of its propaganda and ideology. In her efforts to foster a better understanding between Nazi Germany and England, and encouraged by her German friends and British sympathizers, such as Sir Oswald and Lady Mosley and Unity Mitford, she distanced herself from her husband. This culminated with her affair with a senior member of the German Foreign Office. Henry Brown and his wife separated, She remained in Germany with their two children. Brown, at his own request, was transferred to the British Embassy in Paris.

Upon the outbreak of the Second World War, Henry re-joined his regiment and saw active service in North Africa and

5 out of 5 stars Wunderbar.......2004-04-14

As a well traveled German, living in America the Country of my choice, Henry's Journey brought back fond memories of England, Africa and India. I was much moved by the German subplot. As I was born in postwar Germany, I am always asking myself "would I have been a Henry or a Henrietta? I just wished, there would have been more Henrys or Churchills and this era would not still be such a shadow on my conscience. The twist at the end definitely brings us all back to the dangers we face today.
I particularly liked Henry's reaction to the racial discrimination he had to endure himself, and instead of faltering he rose above it.
Stephen Maitland-Lewis is a wonderful story teller, skillfully introducing real historic events throughout the book. One has to remind oneself that the main characters are just fiction. Brilliant! (Henry could be a great role model for today's times.)
I am looking forward to what this author can next produce.

I love finding a new author. I love it even more when I can honestly say that I look forward to their next book! I read on the average a book every two or three days and if it dosen't capture me in the first 3 chapters I remind myself to pass on any future dealings with said author. Stephen Maitland Lewis has what it takes to grab you and hold you until you find yourself reading the last line of the last chapter! Cheers.

5 out of 5 stars A truly good book!.......2004-04-05

The author of "Hero On Three Continents" is a true mastermind. He writes in a charismatic text, with a focus on detail. Hero on three continents is a "must read!"

5 out of 5 stars HERO ON THREE CONTINENTS - MAITLAND-LEWIS.......2004-04-03

A friend recently purchased this book online in the US. He said it was the best book he'd read in years and sent me his copy to read. I have to say that if anything his comments were an understatement. This is as good, well-written and researched novel as I have ever read. I consider it a masterpiece. A new star is on the horizon and I hope he writes another book soon

        Book Description

An informative, compassionate guide to the motherhood decision

"...give(s) a sense of what's ahead for new parents." --Baltimore Sun

Many women aren't sure how to best time motherhood in their lives. Others think they may want a child but aren't sure they really want to take on the responsibility. Still others want to be child-free, but they are afraid they will regret the decision later on when it's too late. Do I Want to Be a Mom? offers expert information, insights, and tools necessary for each woman to make her own best choice.

Dr. Diana Dell, an expert who is board certified in both obstetrics/gynecology and psychiatry, draws on her expertise to cover the emotional, physical, sexual, social, and financial aspects of this decision. Along with award-winning writer Suzan Erem, she also provides powerful anecdotes from women who speak openly of the fears, joys, regrets, and triumphs of motherhood or being child-free.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-03-16

It may be somewhat basic, but this book is about helping you open your mind and it allows you to explore the choice of having a child. I feel it doesn't go into a lot of detail because the author didn't want to pressure the choice in either direction. It makes you look at women differently. Makes you wonder how they made up their mind about becoming a mom or not. I think it helps to talk in person to women about things. And reading this book has made me want to talk more openly about this huge choice.

        4 out of 5 stars Very Objective.......2007-01-09

It definitely addressed all the questions floating through my head about whether or not I want to change my life. The only aspect that I didn't care for is that it made termination of the pregnancy such a open choice - I would have preferred a Christian author so that wasn't a factor of discussion.

The outline of the book was also helpful because you could skip the chapters that didn't apply to you and not feel like you were missing anything.

1 out of 5 stars Reiterates dilemmas, but doesn't provide insightful answers.......2005-01-05

Very disappointing, no substance, mostly full of quotes from individuals who are not very illuminating either. If you just want to know that you are in good company with your indecision, this book if fine. If you would like it to provide you with answers (as the title suggests) or assist you with your decision, it's not worth your time or money.

2 out of 5 stars Too Basic .......2004-12-03

I was looking to read something that would really stimulate my thinking and allow me to think about this topic in a new way, with the hope that I could come to some answers for myself. What I got was a very cursory overview of many potentially relevant aspects of this topic with nothing I could really "sink my teeth into." To give you an idea about how basic the material is, I was able to read the whole thing in one sitting in bed one night before going to sleep. Overall not very useful and I would not buy this book again.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting but lacks depth.......2004-05-19

While this book contains a wide range of topics of interest to those considering parenthood, it doesn't cover these topics with very much detail. I would have found it more helpful if the stories of the women interviewed had been longer than a paragraph apiece. Overall, this book is useful in that it brings up many important issues for consideration, but in my opinion, it served only as a "springboard" for further research.

5 out of 5 stars The most usable collection of slow cooker recipes.......2006-07-04

There's something for everyone in this book. It includes a wide variety of recipes: every day dishes, fancier dishes for company, main dishes, side dishes, one-pot meals, recipes using fresh ingredients, and time-saving recipes using more processed ingredients (i.e. canned soups, etc.). I've tried a number of the recipes so far and each has been a winner, impressing my discriminating friends and family. The wealth of tips from the kitchen is most beneficial. I have tried a number of slow cooker cookbooks and this is far and away my personal favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Really good introduction.......2006-02-18

We greatly enjoyed the selection of receipes. The price to quality ratio is very high.

              2 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2004-10-08

This book is very disappointing. My main complaint is that many of the recipes call for ingredients such as frozen vegetables, canned soup, mayonnaise, and one which actually calls for an entire bottle of Catalina salad dressing. This really is not my style of cooking. Another reviewer commented that a lot of recipes need something done throughout the cooking process or are partially cooked on the stove before being put into the Crockpot. This was a big turn off for me too. I suggest trying a different book.

              5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2004-05-26

This is a great book for someone who isn't looking for weird recipes. It doesn't use things that you have never heard of before, or that you have to drive an hour to find. Quick to read, easy to make, great to eat. Now you can make more than just pot roast and potatoes.

2 out of 5 stars Not good for people who work all day.......2004-05-07

I was not happy with this cookbook because many of the recipes required that I do something during the day with the recipe, like stir it at 4 hours into cooking, or cook something on a stove then put it in the slow cooker. I work 100 hour work weeks and I really need something quick and easy, and this book did NOT have many recipes that were quick or easy. I was so upset with it I had to write in to give the warning out.

              3 out of 5 stars OK cookbook.......2007-09-02

This book has some helpful information, but is not really anything to write home about. But I'm glad I bought it and I use it for reference when using the slow cooker.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of good recipes!.......2007-05-30

I am a new crockpot owner and I found this book to be very very helpful. There are a vast array of recipes for even the most discriminating tastes including some dessert recipes. The only qualm that I have is that the book only has two settings for cooking, low and high. If you are one of those who do not have a crockpot with either settings(i.e. if there are actual temperature settings, like 350 degrees), then you will have to make adjustments or look up conversions to make sure your food doesn't burn! All around good basic cookbook though!

3 out of 5 stars Interesting recipes, terrible editing & production.......2006-12-27

I have enjoyed perusing the recipes in this book and have made a couple that have turned out well. They don't call for any really obscure or expensive ingredients, but the combinations of ingredients are more inventive and flavorful than the typical add-a-can-of-cream-of-whatever-soup recipes that are prevalent in other slow cooker or quick & easy cookbooks. They are lower in sodium and in general healthier than other cookbooks as well, so if you're used to eating fat or salt-heavy dishes you may not appreciate these recipes.

Now the bad part: this cookbook is the worst example of failure on the parts of editors, proofreaders (if there were any), typesetters and bindery. There are typos, misspelled words, forgotten bits of instruction, an index with incorrect page number references and several pages that were included twice in the binding.

All in all it is perhaps worth it to buy a used copy for a buck or two, but plan to read between the lines and use common sense to make up for the missing or erroneous information.

              Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars great pictures but a lot of inaccurate information.......2005-10-03

This is a nicely produced book - too bad it's not a good one. Large photos on every page should convince everyone of the joy of owning a pet - there are many pictures of children playing with their pets, illustrative photos of both children and adults cleaning cages, and much more.

Unfortunately, even some of the pictures contain misinformation. For example, in the section on rabbits, the daily diet paragraph of text suggests "a handful of raw cabbage or a piece of celery should be plenty." And the photo shows not only many vegetables that will cause gas, such as cauliflower, it also shows a big wedge of iceberg lettuce. As every well-informed rabbit owner knows by now, iceberg lettuce is useless nutritionally, high enough in water to possibly give your rabbit diarrhea, and leaf lettuce is a much better idea. Celery is likewise not a great idea - the strings in it have been known to get caught between teeth, which can lead to malocclusion, and some rabbits have even choked on them.

The text for rabbits also suggests "stale crusts of whole-wheat bread" for treats. And the main advice for housing is an outdoor hutch, with barely a paragraph given to keeping your rabbit indoors as a house rabbit.

Incidentally, the book was written in England, so although there appears to be an effort made to write in English that will be understandable to Americans, there are some items that are still likely to be confusing for American children: breed names for some rabbits and guinea pigs are different; food pellets are differently shaped and colored than most American brands, and so on. Also, it should be noted, the English background probably contributes to the author's preference for keeping rabbits outdoors. The climate in England does not have the extremes that the much larger North American continent has. The weather in Buffalo, NY would be far too cold to keep your rabbit in an outdoor hutch all winter, and the weather in San Antonio, TX, far too hot in the summer - rabbits would die of heat stroke. The English background also shows in the mention of chipmunks as an alternative small pet; in most of the US, chipmunks are not only not pets, but you'd need a specific wildlife permit to be allowed to keep one.

The misinformation in the guinea pig section is just as extensive as the rabbit section. Again, vegetables are recommended that are known to cause gas, or to be nutritionally useless for guinea pigs, or to have caused other problems, and although the text briefly mentions that piggies need vitamin C, there is nothing at all pointing out which veggies and fruits are high in C. The emphasis, as with the rabbits, is on keeping guinea pigs in outdoor hutches, with barely a paragraph on indoor cages.

I do not know as much about hamsters as I do about guinea pigs and rabbits, so I can't tell whether all the information in the hamster section is valid. However, the "healthy treats" section especially recommends yogurt drops - which are mainly sugar and are NOT a healthy treat for any pet, despite the "yogurt" in their name.

There are some good points about this book: the great photos showing lots of interaction between kids and their pets, perhaps the book's strongest point. And for each pet, the section on toys and play has pictures of a great variety of toys, all of them appropriate for the pet, and many of them suggestions that an inexperienced pet owner wouldn't have thought of. Every pet has a lengthy section on seeing a vet, basic healthcare, signs of illness, and when to call a vet.

It's difficult for anyone to try to write a short book that covers several animals. It's best for the potential pet owner to choose a book that is all about ONE species of pet, and contains more details about that particular animal than a scattershot book like this. I would also suggest that anyone looking for a good book on pets check the country of original publication, and look for a recent copyright date. For most Americans, although this book is brand new, copyright 2005, it does not meet the other requirements of being specific to one pet and being specifically written for US conditions.

4 out of 5 stars Very good owner's book for children and a good basic book.......2003-07-13

Reviews of this book seem to be all over the map. Well, I raised about 20+ hamsters (I lost count) since I was a child and I had a small library of books on them. I suppose I can claim to be experienced and well-read at the very least. Mark Evans's book covers a broad range of owner-breeder topics at a level of reading which is excellent for young pet owners. The book is well-illustrated and reasonably thorough for its targeted audience. It focuses mostly on the care of hamsters than on the breeding of them. It is probably the best hamster book for new and young pet owners and it is endorsed by the ASPCA. If you're getting a hamster as a pet for your child, buy this book for your child; but to round-out your knowledge as a responsible supervising parent, buy yourself a copy of "Hamsters" by Otto Von Frisch (if you're getting a Syrian) or "Dwarf Hamsters" by Sharon Vanderlip (if you're getting a dwarf). Incidentally, I gave the book four stars because its advice sometimes gets too demanding and a reasonable amount of common sense needs to be applied for moderation.

              2 out of 5 stars UGH.......2003-04-06

I hate this book. Sure, the pictures are nice, but most of the info is out dated. Honestly, the first time I read this book I gagged. I am an expert on hamsters, and books like these drive me NUTS. Following thi book could actually kill your hamster.

              4 out of 5 stars cool book.......2003-03-08

this book is cool.it showed a lot about hamsters.i gave it to my sister to look at for a while because she has a hamster and she didnt know very much about it and it looked like it was sufficating.but after she read the book it looked much better. i only gave this book four stars because i already new everything in it but its still a good book.

              3 out of 5 stars Kids guide.......2000-09-11

I already owned a hamster before, but I thought that I should read a little bit about them before I got my next one. I was dissapointed with this book. The pictures are really nice, but I did not learn anything about caring for hamsters. The book would be good if I was a young kid (5 or6), but for anyone who is older, there is not information that is really something that can be used. It talks about things such as weighing your hamster and taking it to the vet, which is something that most hamster owners do not do (don't get me wrong- some do). Also, they really only talked about one type of hamster after a brief, and I mean brief description of a few of the others. So, I would suggest this book if the child is young and is about to get thier first hamster, but not for older kids because they will not learn anything that isn't obvious. Example: (this is a list of things to remember) *Don't kiss your hamster, *Never, ever hit your hamster. On the other hand- the pictures are "live" and very colorful. The words are simple. Also, after all those cute pictures, who could say no to owning a hamster!

                  Book Description

A completely revised edition of the Period Ship Handbook, originally published in 1992. The basic modeling instructions have been comprehensively updated and nine of the eleven model projects are brand new, as are all the color and black and white illustrations. New models include HMS Victory and the Victory's Launch, the Lady Nelson, the Clara May and HMS Mars.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth it, unless..........2007-08-06

...you are building one of the ship models included. Even then, there is not likely to be much insight into a specific kit mentioned. All the subjects that would be of interest to a beginner are given short shrift and little in the way of expansion or illustration, and the comments regarding tools, glues and paints are so general as to be worthless. The few color panels are of completed models, but offer little in the way of detail or enlightenment. The photography isn't even that good. As a beginner to tall ship modeling, I wasted my money on this book. I feel mislead as the title and description implies that there is more here than the previous edition released just a year earlier. The "New" is of little value compared to the original Period Ship Handbook. Save your money and buy that one instead.

1 out of 5 stars Rehash Rip Off.......2007-06-16

Don't bother with this one! I have the author's 1st book, Period Ship Kit Builder's Manual, and it's a good intro to building wood model ships. This "New" book offers absolutely nothing new. I got it because I'm building the HMS Mars kit, and it is one of the "model projects" featured in the book. Very misleading! The book offers no insights on the build, but rather simply restates the instructions that came with the kit! Almost verbatim!

5 out of 5 stars The reality of adoption.......2002-11-16

Touching on a current, pervasive, yet unfamiliar subject, the authors bring to light the intricacies of the adoption triad and the difficulties faced by all involved. From an adoptive parent's perspective, the nature of the relationships can be complicated. With the proper communication mechanisms, whether records are sealed or open will have little impact on the individuals involved and, I think that area has not been addressed in the book. However, that is not to say it is unworthy of reading. Those who are not members of the triad, or object to adoption, cannot regard this book with true sincerity and those involved can achieve a better understanding of all parties invovled.

5 out of 5 stars Must Reading For All Touched By Adoption.......1998-10-03

This is one of the finest books ever written on the subject of adoption. Reading this book, in my opinion, is one of the best gifts that any adoptive parent could give to their child or to themselves. The insights provided by the authors are invaluable in helping adoptees, adoptive parents and birth parents alike understand the exquisitely unique and complex issues that adoption "triad" members face throughout their lives. This book dispels a lot of commonly held beliefs and myths about adoption, and provides a sober look at the reality of what it means to be an infertile parent, or a beholding adoptee; and it addresses the myriad of expectations that inevitably lead to hurt and disappointment. Armed with the knowledge and insights revealed in this book, adoptees and adoptive parents can forge a happier life together; and birthparents will find comfort in knowing that others understand their sacrifices. As a reunited birthfather and an advocate for better communications between adoption triad members, I highly recommend this book. Buy it ... it will change your life!

3 out of 5 stars Those newly realizing the problems of adoption will benefit........1998-08-21

The stories contained in this book provide further reasoning for outlawing adoption altogether, although the authors mean to support the open records movement. They are certainly accurate in pointing out that, where adoption is concerned, a change is necessary. Unfortunately, their alterations are too minor to solve most of the problems adoption creates. This book would be good reading for anyone who has recently begun to accept that adoption is not a perfect (or even remotely GOOD) solution for unplanned pregnancy.

This is a tale of friendship, greed, and betrayal in the music industry -- and a definitive history of America's biggest rap mogul.

No one knows more about creating hits than Sean "Puffy" Combs. For years he virtually ran hip-hop. It seemed the perfect arrangement: "Puffy" provided the sounds and obsessive attention to detail while the Notorious B.I.G. promoted an image that kept rap fans happy. It should have lasted forever, but "Biggie" was murdered at the height of his career -- and "Puffy"'s ascension to superstardom ushered in an age of disloyalty and deception that exploded into one of the greatest debacles in the history of the music industry.

Through interviews with label insiders, grand jury testimony, and other sources, America's preeminent rap journalist Ronin Ro

At once an intimate history and a portrait of an era, Bad Boy shows readers exactly how Combs lost his strangle-hold over the multibillion-dollar rap music industry.

The story of Bad Boy Entertainment is the story of the American Dream, an up-close and personal account of the people, the money, the creative process that made it all come true, and the young mogul who caused the dream to fall apart. In this hip-hop tragedy of Shakespearean dimensions, readers finally learn the story that Sean "Puffy" Combs does not want them to know.

4 out of 5 stars THE TRANSFORMATION FROM PUFFY TO DIDDY.......2007-06-20

This book offers a very detailed and accurate chronological compilation of monumental and pivotal events in "Puffy's" life and Bad Boy's history. While it often portrays Puffy as determined and focused, it also depicts him as an egomaniacal and self-serving tyrant. All the people who have played a key role in helping him build his Bad Boy Brand and near billionaire status are woven throughout this story of his meteoric rise to fame including Biggie; Craig Mack; Mase; The Lox; Black Rob; 112; Carl Thomas; Faith Evans; Mary J. Blige; Heavy D; Dream; Andre Harrell; LA Reid; Russell Simmons; and Clive Davis.

You will discover things about Bad Boy that you didn't know (such as Biggie selling his publishing rights to Puffy for $150,000), things that you wish you didn't know (like how Puffy used the tired 60s tactic of buying cars for highly pursued or recently signed new artists with their own money and used it as a smokescreen to blind them to inequitable business practices), and many other serious music business lessons. Despite the fact that this book ends abruptly, it's rivetting, entertaining, and highly informative. Ronin Ro should definitely update this. There's a lot that has happened with Puffy and Bad Boy since it was written.

5 out of 5 stars Best That A Book On This Subject Can Be.......2004-09-20

I read this book in about 3 days and I couldn`t put it down. Ro echoes the sentiment of a Hip Hop patriot and tells just how doctored the music that we integrate into the fiber of our egos is. I would read anything else that he writes and he has great journalism skills. It is also super educational for would be hip hop r&b artist looking to learn about the harsh realities for the music bizz without reading a dry ass law book(law books have their place) but this makes the info a lot more palatable. I feel that the material here does not deal with Puff Daddy unfairly and it didn`t make me hate him , on the contrary I actually like him a little bit more then I did before. At the end of the day hes just a guy trying to make a profit off of the kids just like all the other CAPITALIST. I no longer dichtomize him into good or bad. I salute you Ro. Keep writing good work and I wanna hear that work. Big difference between social political artistic hip hop and doctored market commidity Rap. Drop Me a Line!!!

2 out of 5 stars Objective but depressing.......2003-06-14

I enjoy reading about entrepreneur and learning about how they built their particular business into a success. If you are looking for the same thing in this book you will be very disappointed. The book goes through a blow-by-blow account of P Diddy's problems and ultimately questions his ethics. I believe the book is written objectively, but very few pages are are actually dedicated to expalining how he actually made the leap from intern to a CEO of a multi-million dollar company. That was the story I really wanted to read about. Unfortunately, I learned more about Puffy's legal trial than I did about how he built his empire. If you want an entrepreneurial focused book buy Russell Simmons' Life and Def instead.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Is Incredible.......2002-04-11

Many people might not know about this book since it was released in early September of 2001. But Ronin Ro's Bad Boy is a must-read work. Instead of rehashing details about the coastal rap rivalry he already covered in Have Gun Will Travel, Ro presents an entirely different tale, in an intriguing new voice, but with the same eye for the telling detail. For the first time, a book details every stage of Puffy's career--Ro describes his days as an ambitious aspiring music executive, his first steps at R&B/rap label Uptown and his apprenticeship under Andre Harrell, his contributions to the rap remix format, his rise in the industry(precipitated by well-placed acquaintances at various rap magazines), and his relationship with the late rapper Notorious BIG (covered through a mix of Big's lesser-known interviews and compelling and exciting interviews with label insiders, associates and more). Bad Boy also reveals the creative process behind the label's string of hit albums during the 1990s, how Puffy marketed and--in some cases--watered down his artists' music and how he scrambled to save face after some, including The Lox and Mase, abruptly left the label and the man who claimed to have made them famous. Anyone expecting another book-length retread of the Bad Boy Death Row beef might want another book. Bad Boy is more than that. For a balanced look at Sean "Puffy" Combs and the empire he tried to build, the most in-depth portrait of Biggie Smalls ever offered, and a gripping account of Puffy's 2001 criminal trial, read this book.

After three years in four concentration camps during World War II, Jewish neurologist Victor Frankl returned to Vienna to resume his medical practice. When he met an operating room assistant named Elly, it was "love at first eyesight," and over the next five decades, their romance, described in When Life Calls Out to Us, helped inspire the development of Frankl's famous philosophy of logotherapy. For this book, the Frankls cooperated fully with author Haddon Klingberg Jr., a psychologist who conducted hundreds of hours of interviews, extensively researched the Holocaust, and mastered all of Frankl's primary publications (most notably Man's Search for Meaning. Unfortunately, Klingberg is also gaga for his subjects, fetishizing every detail of their lives. (Victor loved Captain Kangaroo and MacDonald's cheeseburgers "minus the mushy bread.") Readers already enamored of the Frankls will likely be entranced by the book; the rest may wish Klingberg had better emulated the linguistic skills of his hero, whose text, he says, were "sophisticated, yet precise and plain. No pointless words. No petty chatter." --Michael Joseph Gross

                      Book Description

“The only authorized biography of Victor Frankl, whose life story and reflections have inspired tens of millions. Haddon Klingberg records and preserves the Frankl legacy, with his own eloquent and moving reflections.” -- David G. Myers, Hope College, author of The American Paradox: Spiritual Hunger in an Age of Plenty

Written in response to the horrors he experienced and witnessed during the Holocaust, Viktor Frankl’s landmark book, Man’s Search for Meaning, has sold millions of copies and been translated into twenty-seven languages. But although Frankl’s thought and philosophy have been widely analyzed, until now little has been written about his life, and about the deeply loving, intensely spiritual relationship that led him and his wife to dedicate their lives to reducing pain and oppression in the world.

In a book that is at once a wonderful love story and a tribute to two extraordinary people, Haddon Klingberg, Jr., draws on a wealth of anecdotes, told to him by the Frankls themselves, to describe their separate early lives and their fifty-two years as husband and wife. Returning to Vienna after spending three years in four different concentration camps, Frankl, whose first wife and family died in the camps, turned to writing as a way of finding some purpose in his life. But it was Elly Schwindt, a woman half his age, who helped him put the pieces of his broken life together. Married in 1947, the Frankls created a life of hope and faith, a life committed to proclaiming the oneness of the human family, challenging materialistic values, and encouraging the pursuit of meaning.

When Life Calls Out to Us chronicles a spiritual journey infused with tragedy but sustained by love, wisdom, faith, and humor. Klingberg’s extensive interviews, not available anywhere else, reveal the full richness of the Frankls’ lives and beautifully illuminate their enduring contributions toward a better world for all people.

5 out of 5 stars FINDING THE MAN AND WOMAN BEHIND THE SEARCH FOR MEANING.......2007-05-22

It is now 14 years since Haddon Klingberg hosted Viktor Frankl and his wife Elly in Chicago, and was asked by the couple to write their personal story. He accepted the challenge and gave seven years to faithfully researching and recording a remarkable love story, interwoven with the professional accomplishments of one of the towering figures in 20th century psychiatric practice. Klingberg's foreward, introduction and first chapters give a comprehensive overview of the European psychiatric landscape into which Dr. Frankl emerged and upon which he left his indelible mark, after years of incarceration in Nazi concentration camps.
Frankl's logotherapy, which shone a light in my own life forty-three years ago, becomes more than an inspiring theory in author Klingberg's hands. Logotherapy's founder is enfleshed with a genuine humanity of weaknesses and flaws as well as the ideal of self-transcendence to which the noted physician aspired. I learned, and I laughed and cried alternately in this wonderful read. I'll never be the same after being led by the author into the private lives of the two remarkable Frankls.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent biographic information.......2003-07-09

As one of Dr. Frankl's medical students at the Poliklinik in 1948 I found this book of great interest. It is well written and detailed. Although I had always admired Frankl for not falling victim to hate after his concentration camp experiences I was unaware of the profound influence his second wife Elly (the first wife,Tilly, died in Bergen-Belsen) had in his recovery from the tragedies and the help she had given him in the propagation of logotherapy.
Anyone who is familiar with some of Frankl's book will enjoy reading about the fascinating and colorful personal lives of these two truly extraordinary people. Dr. Klingberg is to be congratulated for his efforts in making them available to us.

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful context for Frankl's work.......2003-01-05

This history of Frankl's life, thoughtfully and respectfully told, provides much of the context which breathed even more life into Frankl's work for me.

The below is from Kirkus Reviews.

"Vivid and revealing recollections, impressions, and stories of Viktor Frankl's life, as told to clinical psychologist Klingberg, his friend and former student. In a project that took eight years to complete, Klingberg (Psychology/North Park Univ., Chicago) recorded hundreds of hours of conversations with Frankl and his wife Elly. In the process, he managed to elicit from Frankl (1905-1997) the influences, decisions, and graces that went into the making of the mind that produced the soul-expanding Man's Search for Meaning (1959). Frankl speaks plainly about his secure and comforting early youth, how it may well have had as much influence on his future thought as did the remarkable intellectual atmosphere of early-20th-century Vienna. Not an athletic child, he would instead trip off to attend lectures at the university psychiatric clinic, take sprout in the seedbeds of Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, Jaspers, the Nihilists, Freud, and Adler. He explains the moment of his discomfort with an idea, of the psychological theory and reductionism that deflected him from Freud and Adler, their constrictions and lack of rationality. And how, prior to the concentration camps, he was forming his theory of logotherapy and the development of a less deterministic, more optimistic and humanistic psychology, one rooted in the freedom and independence of the human spirit to assume responsibility in all personal matters, to find meaning in existence by living for someone or something other than the self. Klingberg provides a thorough picture of Frankl's detractors-from those who were angered by his thumbing his nose at collective guilt to others who found fault in his marrying a Christian to those who thought hiswork came down to simple mental attitude. The author also does an artful job of painting in the background against which Frankl's story is cast. A particularly valuable tool for understanding Frankl, as Klingberg manages to collar a wealth of defining moments in his subject's life and work."
