    Book Description

In Luminous Night's Journey, Almaas shares excerpts from his personal journal, which describe a certain thread in his own journey of realization and the processes involved in integrating that realization. This publication marks a fortunate development in our knowledge of how Being is realized in and through the human soul: The process of realization and integration of true nature described in the voice of one who articulates precisely and vividly the psychological and epistemological barriers which confront the individual consciousness as realization is integrated in the context of personal life. Almaas describes how his participation in the unfolding manifestation of Being ushers him into realms that expose and transform increasingly deep ego structures and attachments. Luminous Night's Journey clarifies how the unveiling of Being and the exposure of ego structures constitute one process, leading to the soul's integrated realization of absolute nature and the manifestation of the human being as a personal embodiment of that nature.

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous Reading Experience.......2006-12-14

I have read this book twice, and each time I had a very different experience. The second time was a real adventure, because the concerns the author grapples with in this book are now similar to those I have in my own life. So, there was a real sense of affinity in the second reading.

The book is a series of journal passages written over what appears to be a number of years, in which Hameed Ali (A.H.Almaas) shares, and wonderfully describes, his most intimate mystical reflections. He describes in beautiful language his encounters with the fears and exhilarations he experiences as he manifests new and increasingly powerful dynamics on the ascent of Being. Eventually he arrives at a temporary "state" of experiencing the "Absolute." Some time later, this achievement of bonding and unity with the Absolute becomes a "station," in that it has become a permanent state of consciousness.

This book is very well written, with descriptions of feelings and insights that are at times astounding in their beauty and fullness. A word of warning, though: this book will appeal far more to a more mature reader who has familiarity with actual mystical experience, an abundance of metaphysical and, especially, mystical study and practice, or a strong background in Hameed Ali's works on the Diamond Approach. I would recommend a reading of John Davis's The Diamond Approach for an overview, then plunging in to the Diamond Mind, Diamond Body, and Diamond Heart books. I would also suggest reading Evelyn Underhill's books on western mysticism, Idries Shah's works on Sufism, D.T. Suzuki's writings on Zen Buddhism, and the Tibetan Book of the Dead.

With those books and concepts in mind, Hameed Ali's writings on his personal and deeply intimate mystical experiences will take on even more flavor and beauty.

    4 out of 5 stars A luminous inner journey........2002-07-26

The Diamond Approach to human potential teaches us that when we "learn how to invite our true nature to reveal itself, it will guide us toward realizing our spiritual ground and, at the same time, actualize our potential in all walks of life" (A. H. Almaas, SPACECRUISER INQUIRY, p. xiv). In LUMINOUS NIGHT'S JOURNEY, Almaas describes the self-discovery of his own true nature, and his integration of that realization into his personal life. "The thread I follow in this book," he writes, "sheds light on the obscure process of how the soul, the individual consciousness, becomes integrated into this absolute nature, as and after the source of all experience is realized" (p. ix). This book may appeal more to Almaas's students than to those readers new to his Diamond Approach teachings.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Descriptions of Higher state of Consciousness.......2001-10-23

I have been reading about and studying higher states of consciousness for 30 years, and in all that time I have never read such personal, detailed, in depth descriptions of experiences of Unity Consciousness. Almaas has an amazing facility to describe profoundly subtle experiences. His descriptions are consistent with classical descriptions of that state, yet at the same time he adds an element of examining his own "ego structures" in the light of the Untiy experiences. If you are into this type of thing, this is a truely facinating book.

I am a practicing mental health therapist. I deal with adults and adolescence that have a history of or are currently dealing with self injury. This book offered some good insight into self injury and treatment options/tips when dealing with a person who self injurers. I was somewhat disappointed in the lengthy explanation of all the disorders. However, I am reading this book from a therapist point of view and not a person who is trying to recover.

Overall; I felt this book had some good insight but would have liked more focus on the treatment and outcome rather than the different types of disorders.

in this case, the fact this book is old really only impacts the fact you can buy it used extremely cheap. this is my favorite cookbook. it's nice to have huge hardcover gourmet glossy picture books, but after buying one, it just sits around because all the recipes are very unhealthy and not to mention i cant find half the ingredients.

this cookbook, however without pictures or glossy pages, has honest commentary on the recipes, they're easy to make, easy to find the ingredients, and it's very easy to navigate.
and i got my copy for 83 cents! cant beat it. it'll cost you more to ship it to you then it will to buy it. highly reccomended for the practical vegetarian.

I have had the first edition for 15 years now, and it is still one of my favourite cookbooks. Preparation time and cooking time are clearly indicated, and you'll find most ingredients in your pantry. Metric measurements will help. But apart from that, this IS fast food.

5 out of 5 stars Challenging, but worth it.......2004-03-05

The planes in this book are amoung the most challenging I have seen in a published book. I'll admit that I haven't completed them all yet, but that's because my younger brother took the book. A number of the planes look very similar to their real-life counterparts and still fly well if made correctly.

The techniques shown in the book may be hard to initially figure out, but I have applied them very well to my own plane designs. For the low price of the book, it is definitely worth buying to expand your knowledge of paper airplane design.

Oh, yea... Previous origami experience is highly recommended. These are all made from square sheets.

1 out of 5 stars very frustrating even for those advanced at origami.......2002-08-30

This book is very frustrating even for those advanced at origami. The author seems to skip a whole lot of steps. To that end, most of the author's instructions tell you to make a great deal of complicated folds, then tells you to unfold them all completely and then tells you "to use your imagination" to make it look like the final step. Oddly enough, if you are that good at doing origami, you simply would not need this book.

1 out of 5 stars Difficult to follow instructions.......2002-01-17

granted i am not an origami expert, but i thought the book would have clear folding instruction/pictures to follow along. this is not the case.....it consists of drawings, lots of arrows and little else. i've seen better books.

4 out of 5 stars Hard stuff, technically challenging.......2001-04-17

This book contains really complex models. The diagrams are not easy to follow as well. However, the folds are unique and fascinating. This book is for people who are experienced folders.

            Book Description

Laughter and hope make the best defense against stress. Here, Lori Borgman takes on life's daily pressures with her trademark homespun humor. There's plenty here to make a woman's eyelids twitch: anxiety about love handles; too much tummy; corduroy pants that make a loud swishing sound when she walks; teaching her son to drive a stick shift; the hormonal roller coaster ride of life past forty; and the challenge of being married to a guy who claims women live longer than men because "man years" are tougher on the body. All Stressed Up and No Place To Go offers up an arsenal of tension-busting laughs, plus an uplifting message about friendship, family, and faith.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars You Gotta be 40+, Married with Kids, Then You'll Understand.......2005-06-01

Lori Borgman writes a column on parenting and family life that is distributed to newspapers all over the country. She even makes getting a traffic ticket funny (Chapter 17). And there's getting the kids to take a bath, and then getting them out of the bathroom (Chapter 7). There's the hormonal roller coaster ride of a female past forty (More than one chapter).

This book is a series of what I suppose were newspaper columns (we don't get them here so I can't be sure). There is little of earth shattering importance here, just enough to make you chuckle a bit and make life better than it was.

Perhaps my favorite was her learning how to pray -- she was teaching her teenage son how to drive a pickup truck with a manual transmission. Oh how I remember those days.

If you're under forty something, if you haven't been married, if you don't have any kids -- you simply won't understand. But for the rest of us, very entertaining reading. She understands our life.

                Book Description

Fifty first-person accounts of fans who have had a close encounter (usually face-to-face) with Bob Dylan, one our most enigmatic and reclusive public figures and the 20th Century's most influential songwriter.

The contributors come from around the world, and some even have recognizable names, such as mandolinist David Grisman, journalist Nat Hentoff, the late Hall-of-Fame pitcher Jim "Catfish" Hunter, rapper Kurtis Blow, and noted groupie/author Pamela Des Barres. Collectively, their stories provide compelling, sometimes amusing, insight into Dylan and his long and complicated relationship with his legion of devoted admirers.

The book also includes 24 photographs, many of them previously unpublished images of Dylan.

                5 out of 5 stars fan's recollections, fan's delights.......2006-03-14

Tracy Johnson has done a very good job of finding a variety of diverse people in her compilation of Dylan fans and the stories they tell of meeting, seeing and being inspired by Bob Dylan. Certainly a must read for any Dylan fan.

                3 out of 5 stars Interesting if you're a fan.......2002-07-31

As the greatest - not to mention most important, in every sense of the word - songwriter of the 20th century, Bob Dylan has, unsurprisingly, inspired a legion of devoted fans. Although every major artist has their share of obsessives and fanatics, the ones who follow Dylan have far surpassed mere "groupie" or "hard-core" status: they reside in a legendary status - even mythological. Some of these, branded "Dylanologists", have achieved a level of notoriety compared in a small way with the artist himself. Many fans know of the famous (or infamous) "Garbologist", A. J. Weberman, who even went so far as searching through the dumpsters outside Bob's house for his baby's soiled diapers - allegedly looking for clues to obscure lyrics, and even conjuring up a paranoid fantasy conspiracy that the government was out to get Dylan for raising sentiment against the Vietnam War, and that Dylan knew it, and alluded to it, through subtle messages in his songs. Bob Dylan's history is filled with many other such characters and ancedotes. Perhaps it comes as no surprise, then, that Dylan is a very mysterious character, and known for his ambivalence towards fans. Securing a personal meeting with Dylan is a difficult thing to do, and those fans who do manage it are held in a kind of revered awe by the faithful. This book is a record of such encounters. There are many books available on Dylan (certainly more serious and scholarly works than on any other rock musician), but this is just about the only one where the air of pretentious intellectual refinement is removed, and you hear it straight from the mouth of the ones who really matter: the fans. These are the fans personal reminisces of meeting Dylan, or otherwise coming close in some way. These are the normal, everyday fans - people like you and me (although there are certainly a few obsessives - such as the man who keeps a "Dylan shrine" in his house), although there are a handful of semi-famous names in here as well. The accounts range from revelatory (people being personally invited backstage by Dylan, a record store employee purporting not to know who he is, a man who retrieves Dylan's stolen cap); to hilarous (a fan who meets Dylan in a cafe and asks him a strange question, a meeting between Dylan and a fan in an alley before a concert), to just plain boring and inane. You are hearing these recollections as told straight from the fans - granted, then, the prose is often crude, and some stories are better than others. This, then, is a book you'll want if you're looking for personal, often funny, sometimes touching stories from the fans themselves - rather than pseudo-intellectual exposition from so-called "rock scholars." I would not rate this as an essential Dylan book: rather I reccommend it if you are a fan and want a slightly more personal and unique book about Dylan than you normally find.

5 out of 5 stars Song and Dance Man.......2001-07-25

Ms. Johnson has done a wonderful job in illustrating the fanatic nature of Dylan's fans combined with the reclusive nature of their hero. As the lights have burned ever brightly on Dylan in the latter stages of his career, Bob has increasingly receded into the shadows, content to let his son Jabob bask in the spotlight for the family. This book, though, shows the connection that Dylan's fans still feel towards him, whether they have met him or just been touched by him in some small way. I especially enjoyed the story of the young man who had Dylan autograph his tattoo of Bob's likeness.

Whether you are a Dylan fanatic or just a reader who enjoys touching anecdotes, this book is for you. It is refreshing to see that not every entertainment star has forgotten that it is the fans that make or break your career. Buy the book. You'll love it.

3 out of 5 stars Another Side of Bob Dylan.......2001-04-19

Let's face it: Bob can be a jerk to his fans. But then again, it's got to be hell being accosted by obsessive fans everywhere you go. If you've read some of the Dylan biographies out there you have an idea of Dylan's life and work. This book gives you a glimpse into what it's like to be a Dylan fan. Some of the accounts are more engaging than others and some don't even involve meeting Dylan at all. I wish they'd left those out... Anyway, this is interesting but very brief. You can read the whole thing in a day and I think there are just as many stories out there (for free) on the internet at the many Dylan sites.

1 out of 5 stars Like reading fan mail?.......2001-04-07

I expected intamite encounters from people who are, or were close to Bob Dylan. In fact most of the stories were from finatic fans or groupies who had either only met him once or, in some cases, never. There were a few interesting stories, but not enough to make this book worth reading.

Gilbert Michlin is a distant relative. This book sheds added information for my family history. Most interesting is the mention of my Uncle by name who helped Gilbert along his way.

5 out of 5 stars Important and moving.......2005-06-24

While the author is clearly not a writer by profession, this book is very readable and moving. Even more important is the information given about a dreadful period in human history.
