Book Description
This eighth volume of a projected twelve continues the series of William James's correspondence with family, friends, and colleagues, which was begun in volume 4 of the Correspondence. The eight volume contains some 530 letters, with an additional 620 letters calendared, thus giving a complete accounting of James's known correspondence from 1895 to June 1899 inclusive. During this period, James struggles against various temptations, never completely successfully, to devote all of his attention to philosophy, the first and great love of his life. To this end, he published The Will to Believe with a promise to set out more formally his system of radical empiricism. The volume helps document the reception of the book and the controversy to which the title essay gave rise, a controversy the main issues of which have once again returned to the forefront of philosophical discussion and places James in the middle of postmodernist discussion. His 1898 tour of California where he delivered his lecture on "Philosophical Conceptions and Practical Results," the start of the pragmatism controversy, also belongs to the period of the present volume. Among the distractions from philosophy are his 1896 Lowell Institute lectures on exceptional mental states and the Gifford lectures on varieties of religious experience, on which he began work in the late 1890s. His new philosophical correspondents are the Polish nationalist and messianist Wincenty Lutoslawski and Ferdinand Canning Scott Schiller, the future strategist of the pragmatism controversy.
James becomes a public philosopher, whose views were sought on the problems of the day. To James's great dismay, the United States was becoming an imperial power: the Venezuela crisis and the Spanish-American War sometimes rousing James into outrage. France was being torn apart by the Dreyfus affair with James expressing strong sympathies for Dreyfus and the intellectuals. The race question was coming to the forefront, with Booker T. Washington entering the list of correspondents. His family continued to take up much of his attention. As his children grew older, they became the recipients of numerous didactic, affectionate, and playful letters from a father often at a distance.

One of the Most Lovable Letter Writers Ever to Take Up a Pen.......2000-07-29
Although this is the fourth volume of the new edition of WJ's correspondence, in a way it is really the first, and would be a good place for a reader desiring a more intimate acquaintance with William James and his world to start. Volumes 1-3 were devoted to the letters to and from his equally famous novelist brother -- an appealing idea and one probably calculated to increase interest and sales, but perhaps questionable on more fundamental grounds. Be that as it may, as a reading experience Volume 4 can scarcely be recommended too highly. William James is probably one of the most lovable letter writers ever to set pen to paper. In these letters every sentence comes alive and breathes.
James possessed to a high degree qualities of attention, powers of observation, and an adorable desire to render experience vividly. It is a cliche to say that "a world comes alive" in pages like these, but that is the feeling I have when, for example, I read a letter written from Dresden to Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. on May 15, 1868: "Wendell of my entrails! At the momentous point where the last sheet ends I was interrupted by the buxom maid calling me to tea and through various causes have not got back till now. As I sit by the open window waiting for my bkfst. and look out on the line of Droschkies drawn up on the side of the dohna Platz, and see the coachmen, red faced, red collared, & blue coated with varnished hats, sitting in a variety of indolent attitudes upon their boxes, one of them looking in upon me and probably wondering what the devil I am, When I see the big sky with a monstrous white cloud battening and bulging up from behind the houses into the blue, with a uniform coppery film drawn over cloud & blue which makes one anticipate a soaking day, when I see the houses opposite with their balconies & windows filled with flowers & greenery -- ha! on the topmost balcony of one stands a maiden, black jaketted, red petticoated, fair and slim under the striped awning leaning her elbow on the rail and her peach like chin upon her rosy finger tips -- Of whom thinkest thou, maiden, up there aloft? here, *here!* beats that human heart for wh. in the drunkenness of the morning hour thy being vaguely longs, & tremulously, but recklessly and wickedly posits elsewhere, over those distant housetops which thou regardest..."
This jocular yet earnest mood is perhaps the most pervasive one in these letters. Yet we also get glimpses into the deep and suicidal depressions he fought during his early years. Several of the letters in this volume blossom into fascinating six- or seven-page ruminations on some of the deepest questions of philosophy and religion, for these are the years in which James, "swamped in an empirical philosophy," won through to a view of the world that found room for consciousness, will, and spirit. It is in his letters to (and from) Holmes, the physician Henry Bowditch, and his bosom friend Tom Ward that we feel most intensely James's mind and heart grappling with the ideas he cares most deeply about.
But James is not always mulling over deep principles. At eighteen years of age he briefly considered becoming a painter, and began studies to that end, so it is in his character to be fully alive to surface details of the scene about him. A commentary on cultural and political matters full of interesting judgments runs though these letters. Readers will also come to feel they know well every member of the James family. WJ's letters to his sister Alice are especially remarkable.
Though my initial reaction to the policy of extremely restrained annotation practiced by the editorial team was one of frustration, in the end I came to appreciate the free hand it gives us to reread letters more carefully and to feel ourselves into the wonderful and mysterious crannies of the inner life of a great human being. To this end, I recommend deferring the introduction by Giles Gunn until after they have concluded the letters. Professor Gunn (of UC Santa Barbara) has interesting and pertinent things to say -- especially about James's relation to his father, the Swedenborgian theologian Henry James, Sr., on whose work Gunn has written -- but there is nothing there that cannot wait until readers have first immersed themselves in the primary texts.
The volumes of this series are beautiful in their craftsmanship, and it is an aesthetic as well as intellectual delight to manipulate and peruse them. This volume would make an excellent gift for a bright high school senior or college freshman, since the problems of youth and of finding a vocation hold a special place here -- for anyone struggling with a chronic or debilitating illness (James is plagued with back and eye problems through most of these years) -- or indeed, for anyone who reads!

Book Description
Using this science-based plan, dieters will learn how to eat in order to boost serotonin, the brain chemical that shuts off appetite and turns on feelings of calm. This clinically tested program is also the first to offer antidepressant users an effective way to lose extra weight associated with their medication.
The Serotonin Weight Loss Plan is based on more than 30 years of pioneering research at MIT by internationally renowned scientist Dr. Judith Wurtman on the brain, emotions, appetite, and overeating. Using this research, she and Dr. Nina Marquis devised a program that puts the brain in charge of food intake. This simple 12-week plan, with more than 75 delicious recipes, was successfully tested on hundreds of clients at the Adara weight loss centers founded by the authors. Readers will lose up to 2 pounds a week—while reducing stress and improving their moods.
Because the plan is designed to turn on serotonin and turn off the need to eat, readers will never feel deprived. In addition, as serotonin increases feelings of well-being, emotional eating will vanish.

It works!.......2007-09-20
This is fabulous. I find myself feeling much healthier by following the simple steps and regulated snacking. It really shocked me the difference this diet (now a lifestyle) made in my life. I feel better, my body functions better and in conjunction with yoga, the overall quality of my life has improved.
question - help....???.......2007-09-03
I do not understand...I thought when you go on an anti-depressant it was suppose to help balance your unbalanced hormones and chemicals? I thought it was suppose to give us more serotonin, not less?? I was first put on an antidepressant when a doctor told me it would help give me energy (I was not depressed, I had a long battle with mono and still had fevers and fatigue). I gained about 60 pounds, did not get any energy, felt "odd", not quite myself. It was not fun. Eventually went off the pills for a few years. Then started having anxiety and not feeling very good (blood work showed my hormones were really unbalanced, had me in "post-menopausal" in some areas, even though I was only 30 yrs. old and still menstruating, but just my hormones in general seemed all out of whack),so I was put back on another antidepressant. I thought these meds were suppose to help us feel better, more calm, less stressed, sleep better, put us in balance, etc. Why do they seem to do little other than cause major weight gain? I am considering buying this book. If you follow the diet, does it help you more than antidepressants? Anyone gone off their antidepressants after following the diet for a while? (I'm not talking about those with bi-polar and major depression for whom the meds have truly helped and been benefical, but for anyone who has had doctors pop them on antidepressants when you weren't really depressed?).
The Serotonin Power Diet.......2007-07-18
We've all done it- eating a whole bag of potato chips or more cookies than we'd like to admit when trying to deal with stress, anxiety, fatigue, or sadness. The thing is that it works. After eating that comfort food, we feel like we can face the world once again. So food becomes a refuge and the scale reflects it.
Then, along comes the Atkins diet. No carbs. Truthfully, how long did it take you to cheat during your first bout of PMS? Even when you were being "good", how bad were the carb cravings?
The Serotonin Power Diet makes carbs permissible once again, in moderation and at the right times. One small carbohydrate filled snack, eaten about an hour before a meal can actually reduce your appetite allowing you to eat appropriate portions of healthy foods without cravings or feeling like you are actually on a diet.
Unlike many diets, I can see The Serotonin Power Diet actually fitting into my everyday lifestyle. Craving carbs during PMS or when I'm tired often derails my nutritional efforts. Having a small snack seems to alleviate that feeling that I've failed in my efforts and relieves my cravings.
The Serotinin Power Diet .......2007-05-21
I found Judith Wurtman's book The Serotinin Power Diet to be the only book that deals with what I consider, really counts: Hunger control.
Through their year's of research at MIT they have learned what triggers binging and hunger and teaches you what to eat, before attending social events etc. It teaches you how to control you appetite so you can go into any situation and control yourself and not overeat. So you loose weight easily.
I don't follow her diet I just follow her concept and principles as to how to feed myself for not being hungry, particularly when I have social events.
Being at home it is easy to follow any plan; it the going out with friends etc that makes it difficult. But that's the key; She has taught me how not to be hungry.
I have lost 15 pounds in a little less than three months and I am on my way to normalize my body weight and speciallly, lower my glucose.
First time something works for me.

Interesting.......2007-05-16
This is a book about how people already on SSRIs can better manage their diet. It is not a book that will give you information about how to avoid using SSRIs by increasing your serotonin levels through diet.
I thought it was the latter, so it didn't really help me. But if you are on sSRI sand want to manage your weight better, it may help.

difficult to put into practice.......2007-07-15
ALthough the book covers the array of natural antidepressants--it is not organized in a way that makes it easy to try and administer the advise. It also does not cover the role that exercise plays in alleviating depression--an important omission. However it does cover the chemical imbalances that may cause depression and the elements that need to be addressed in order to fix the imbalance.

Customer Reviews:
Delectable.......2006-12-15
Wow! I've made perhaps half of the recipies in this book, and whilst I have my favorites (the brownies are just to die for), there's not one I wouldn't make again. Most recipies do require good, dark and generally expensive chocolate, but it's well worth the extra expense.
If you love chocolate and don't mind cooking, you'll love this.
If you don't love chocolate yet, this might just convert you.
One of the best.......2006-03-28
This is a great bargain, as the first reviewer states. There are a plethora of beautiful and inspirational photos, but the recipes are achievable. Many fancy chocolate cookbooks have fabulous looking recipes, but they require half a day, or more, to complete.
My daughter and I just made the Guiness Stout Cake and were very happy with the results.
I haven't tried their easy way of tempering chocolate, yet, but it looks quick and fairly foolproof.
One of the trends in chocolate cookbooks recently, see Chantal Coady's book, is savory dishes. This book includes a variety of tempting fare in that department, too.
Beautiful and a bargain.......2004-11-10
This book is a call to action. Makes you want to run to the kitchen with it's beautiful images and interesting stories so you can read while you're waiting for the oven to heat up. With so many unique recipes-not just chocolate cake, it's a bargain!

With this handy pocket reference, collectors can make on-the-spot judgments about identification, age, quality, and value. Complete Price Guide to Watches has become the professional standard for watch collectors and dealers.
Customer Reviews:
An old standby continues moving along.......2007-08-17
This used to be considered the bible of pricing of vintage watches - it is a tremendous piece of work - however many models are missing and prices
need updating as the economy has changed very much in a few short years.
However for the beginner there is no better book to learn and have
a handy reference to save money and not lose it when buying an old watch
Pocket Watches.......2007-07-19
The book is not perfect, but it is a great bargain for the money. It is reasonably easy to use and yet detailed in the descriptions and explanations. I was able to pick out my watches and establish a value very quickly. I used it for all my eBay purchases. I do recommend this book as a great reference for pocket watches.
Informative Guide to American watches.......2007-07-13
This is a practical guide to watches and their prices. It dwells mostly on American pocket watches, and in this aspect it is most informative. It is less so on European pocket watches and wrist watches, but still manages to cover a lot of ground. The pricing seems accurate as a guideline.
Good Price Guide.......2007-07-08
An excellent guide to watch values. Strongest for American Pocket Watches and weaker IMO for European Pocket watches and for wrist watches, particularly Quartz.
Great - But.......2007-04-16
I appreciate the amount of information in the book and the author's time invested in the update.
One of my major interests is in the Hamilton 992B pocket watch. I noticed that the author drastically changed the dates of manufacture related to the serial numbers. This is very disappointing. The 992B has not been made for 40 years. Why is the author changing the information?
I wanted to purchase a 992B for the year I was born. This reference book has let me down in having assurance of when that actual date was. The 992B serial number for my birth year was 490,000-495,000 now it is 516,000-520,000.
This lends me to loose trust in the book as a reference. Was the former information incorrect or the current information? At least an explanation on why the change was made could have been provided.
The Bottom Line: It is an excellent reference but the watch collecting information presented is subject to change - so don't depend on it.

Customer Reviews:
Stained glass stepping stones.......2005-03-25
I bought this book, knowing nothing about making stepping stones or working with stained glass. Great book! I have made some beautiful stepping stones (using tumbled stained glass). . . this book gave me the basics and some great ideas. I recommend it for anyone interested in crafts of this type!
Liked it so much I bought a copy.......2004-08-25
I checked this book out from the library and, after renewing it once, realized I just needed my own copy. There are details, like suggesting soaking pieces before using them in a mosaic, that I've not seen elsewhere, and I checked out over a dozen mosaic books.
The pictures are clear, directions thorough, and there are several projects I'm interested in trying.
Backyard Mosaics by Connie Sheerin is the other book in this genre I'd recommend, simply because there are many projects that look useful as well as fun.
Loads of easy ideas for all who love to mosaic!.......2003-06-08
There are lots and lots of great easy ideas. I feel really inspired after just looking through the book! The technique the author uses is different from the one I've always used, but it looks fun and probably a great way for kids and other beginners to start. I'm anxious to try it, and I plan to incoropate a lot of the ideas from the books into my future mosaic projects!!
An "easy" mosaic book that really IS easy...........2003-02-25
"Easy Mosaics for Your Home and Garden" is inspiring. In a fun and easy to follow style, the book explains in words and pictures how to create a number of beautiful mosaic projects both for indoors and the garden. The instructions are clear and photos very helpful. The author makes mosaic art non-intimidating, by using a non-fussy easy clean-up approach. I have had a lot of fun using the book as a step-by-step guide in making projects with family members-some of whom had never touched an art or craft project before. Each project results in a beautiful or whimsical piece of mosaic art. Definitely a fun guide and great book!

Beautiful illustrations, information good, great gift or coffee table book!
Nice Photographs - Typically readily available roses.......1998-07-24
I will buy virtually any book on roses so I don't regret buying this one. The book provides each rose a single page and photograph so its fun to just look at the pictures, annotated with the relevant stats and a short description of the rose. The author has a long association with Jackson-Perkins and Horticulture Magazine. For me, the book's shortcomings are fairly serious. Reviewing the descriptions of the roses made it immensely obvious that the author and I don't use similar criteria when identifying favorite roses. The term 'favorite' is a purely subjective term so one can't critique the author for a value judgement, nevertheless, I wouldn't let this list of favorites guide my selection of roses to plant. For example, one favorite rose had the following in the description: "Mildew and blackspot are often a problem", "It is not especially hardy" and has "slight fragrance." Another rose had "sparse growth and inhibited flower! ing when hot" while at the same time being "not super hardy". Those roses wouldn't go in my garden. Just as a nicety, I always look for a bibliography and this book had none. Cultivation was only very briefly touched on.

Book Description
Complete Guide to Roses will appeal to anyone who wants roses in their garden. It is ideal for gardeners who have been afraid to grow roses as well as for those who already grow these lovely flowers and want to learn more about them. Unlike many competitive books that originate in Great Britain and do not address North American growing issues, this book covers the effects of local climate on roses. Readers will learn how to care for the plants easily and efficiently, prepare and maintain the soil for optimal plant health, control pests and disease with environmentally friendly techniques, and prune every type of rose.
Book Description
In this book, two of America's leading sex and gender experts show readers how to make sex more enjoyable by breaking away from the repetitive mechanics of intercourse. The book describes a path toward more a varied, playful, and intimate sexuality, debunking myths such as "impotence," "frigidity," and "foreplay;" indeed, the book shatters the myth that intercourse equals sex itself.
"Let Me Count The Ways":
* defines "outercourse", shows why it is a valuable addition to peoples' sexual vocabulary, and explains how readers can maximize their comfort and pleasure with it.
* shows how individuals and couples can increase their body's erotic functioning, and increase sexual satisfaction;
* includes dozens of ideas and exercises--such as an "intercourse sabbatical"--which will help partners relax, take advantage of a wide range of enjoyable sexual activities, and communicate about their concerns; and
* discusses how to break free from sexual stereotypes of the media, medical profession, and psychological profession, and overcome the idea that intercourse is a "normal" and necessary part of every sexual encounter.
More than a self-help book, this is an innovative, practical, tested program that will change the way that readers look at their sexuality--forever.
Customer Reviews:
A new way of looking at sex.......1999-04-25
This book puts forth the bold idea that couples do not need to have intercourse to have sex, and then discusses how to have great sex without intercourse. The only downside to the book is that it's a little repetitive. It also is a good book for unmarried teens and young adults to read, because it shows them how to have positive sexual experiences without the risk of pregnancy or sexulally transmitted diseases.

Just Mahalia, Baby!.......2007-01-23
Great biography! I have always enjoyed reading about the world's greatest singer, and this biography simply takes out all the stops and tells about the true Mahalia, in her own words. Mahalia, I miss you more and more each day, because no one sings like you or as well as you sang.
"Don't Make Me No Saint, Baby".......2002-12-20
I read this lengthy story many years ago. In the meantime I was privileged to meet one of Mahalia's former pianists, Rev. J. D. Strawther, who is so listed in the book. Hearing Strawther's chronicle of his experience with the powerful singer made the book come alive to me. I am a very strong admirer of the late Clara Ward, and enjoyed reading, from Mahalia's viewpoint, about the relationship of the Ward Singers and Miss Jackson.
It is extremely admiral to see how that Mahalia pulled herself up by her own bootstraps in a day and time when that was very difficult, and given her problem with timing in regards to her vocal singing. It must have taken a lot of courage for Laurraine to write the good, the bad and the ugly; and some instances were rather disappointing. But she wrote as she was instructed, "Don't make me no saint, baby."
Just Wonderful.......2002-02-18
Just great...but very long. In my school library, we have 2 copies of of this book, and I believe that I've checked them out close to 15 times. I really enjoyed the parts that I've been able to read.
It had it's contented times and it had it's sad times. There's information about Mahalia's concerts/T.V appearances...what went on backstage, during the concert, and after the concert. One of my favorites was the part where Mahalia was a guest on Dinah Shore's show and they sang many songs, and then it came time to sing my favorite song, "Elijah Rock." Dinah said that she couldn't remember the words, but tried everything in her power to distract her singing by clapping or adding stuff in the song. I believe that I remember reading that Mahalia, shortly after beginning the song, saw that Dinah forgot the song and kept looking at her in a joking manner. I laugh everytime I read that.
This book was great, and you should read it to...SERIOUSLY!

Surviving with Wolves

Customer Reviews:
Good addition to my library.......2006-07-25
I was captured in the story. Did'nt want to put the book down. Misha wasn't necessarily "raised" by wolves, she encountered the wolves on her lonely journey, and what way to make friend than foe with the wolves- Being out in the woods on her own made her senses heighten, which helped her to adapt (the best she could as a child) to her surroundings and nature. Furthermore, brang her to a higher understanding level with the animals. She was lonely, and she felt peace from her many struggles when she was with the wolves. Misha had many encounters humans and animals. When you read this book hopefully you will underdstand why the wolves play a significant part to her life.
An Amazing Gift.......2006-07-17
This author is a captivating writer. Having met Misha once, not one person can deny the truth behind this story. She is an amazing person and this book can only show a glimpse of what she has been put through.
Unique and Inspiring!.......2003-08-18
What a fabulous story. I stayed up half the night to finish the book. This would be an excellent book for pre-teens and up --except for one half page where Misha witnesses a rape in the woods. It is far less graphic than a lot of evening TV. I would still recommend it for "required reading" lists- just giving a heads's up for parents/teachers. I read this book over a year ago and am leaving a review now because the book left such an impression on me.
THE DEEP DOWN STRENGTH OF SURVIVAL.......2002-05-11
This is not just another view of WWII. It is a true and personal journey of an orphaned 7 year old through war ravaged Belgium and Eastern Europe. From her escape from a "safe home" to living with a pack of wolves, this is a story of what strength and ingenuity it takes to survive. She joins thousands of others who managed to escape the Nazi's. A remarkable story. Can't wait for the movie!
An Inspiring Story of Survival and Courage.......2002-01-19
I have read this book several times, and each time I was inspired by Misha's determination and resourcefulness. I am Jewish myself and was hidden in an orphange in Molenbeek, not far from Anderlecht were Misha stayed.
The ability of a young girl to take care of herself in the wild and to relate to wild animals is remarkable. What is also noteworthy is the fact that she was able to function alone. That this is not easy. I know this from experience since I had to learn how to be alone because I was often ostracised due to religious prejudice as a child.
Hopefully more people who read about Misha will see the futility of hating ones fellow human beings and animals and be inspired to respect all life.
This book is definitely a treasure worth reading. If it were to be made into a movie, it would surely be inspiring!
