Book Description
This book describes the life story of John LeDoux. Born in 1924 and reared in California, this story recounts the adventures of growing up in the 20s and 30s when there was no TV or youth sports' programs. Youngsters in those days played sandlot ball, cops and robbers, cowboys and Indians, kick the can, and various other activities. There was little parental interaction but most of the time the kids did behave although the story does recount some mischievous behavior, especially on Halloween.
This fleet footed Broadmoor gang all saw service in WWII. Some did not make it home. LeDoux went to the Naval Academy when it was still a military school not influenced by feminism. The story describes the life of midshipmen and their officers and how sometimes the strict military code was avoided. The description of one officer, "Uncle Beany Jarrett" is a classic.
His "sea stories" about life in the Navy, even in peacetime, are interesting and funny, like his "Mr. Roberts" role on a cargo ship. He did see much of the world: the arctic, the South pole, the Western Pacific, and several trips to Europe. But it is the personalities and their interactions that grab your attention. During this time he married and fathered and helped rear 8 children. In 9 years this family moved coast to coast 8 times. He was the first civil engineer in the Navy to receive nuclear PG training. His role as a "Poor man's Rickover": when he was in charge of the Shore Based Nuclear power program provided grist for the mill. The Fairway Rock project illustrates how government red tape was avoided to accomplish an important task.
After the Navy, his many jobs in civilian life show that people interactions are again the salt of life. These experiences also go coast to coast. How he handled a tough personnel problem coming in as a high level civilian and an outsider, is a lesson in leadership.
His last position before retiring for good, was as a university professor teaching engineering freshman provided more "sea stories". It is interesting to read how education of children has changed from his experience in the 40s to the present. The three Rs, reading, 'riting and 'rithmatic, are now the three Ss, self esteem, socialization, and low SATs. The story recounts many human interest events that are at times funny and at times sad but intriguing. The marriage of over 50 years that produced 8 children, 11 grandkids, 6 greatkids mixed with a varied professional career on a world wide stage provided the fodder for these stories and how to be a father, husband, and a popular leader of men.

The Story of a Life Well Lived.......2000-03-31
Recently in an interview with Charlie Rose Meryl Streep spoke of women needing a dream that portrayed them as powerful, particularly as they age. Helen Luke's autobiography is just such a dream. It is a carefully woven tapestry of her dreams, her thoughts, her readings (the wide range of her reading & interests included Lord Of the Rings by Tolkien, Dante, T.S. Eliot, C.K. Williams,& Larry Dossey's Shamanic books), and the encounters that she had in her life (which included Robert Johnson, Carl Jung, Dr. Meiers, Toni Sussman,Dr. Kunkel). The patterns of this tapestry speak to us of a life that followed the Way of individuation, as she refers to it in the autobiography. What most impressed me was the way in which she lived the path, risks and all, that Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell taught, despite her Christian Scientist upbringing. This straightforward autobiography & her journals model The Way. Her courage to leave her mother behind while she was dying in order to follow her "dreams" was inspirational. Her discussion in her diary entry about C.K.Williams work Descent Into Hell (which she refers to frequently, reminding me of how good a book it was) and it's demonstration that "a `daughter's gift to an injured mother' through language, even many years after a mother's death, may be valid" fed many beliefs that I have had about how healing can occur and ones role in it. The book read like a road map to a fulfilled life, well marked by the signposts of the numinousities, synchronicities, and struggles encountered by a thoughtful individual. It is hard to put down, I read through it almost at once, and will be studying and thinking about the lessons it holds for a long time. I am quite confident that most men and women will not regret studying this book.

Very good vegan book!.......2007-03-29
This is my favorite vegan cookbook so far! (I have several). It uses really simple ingredients, and the portion sizes are hearty. I will probably need to replace it in a few years because my current copy is getting rather beat up due to overuse.
Another reviewer wrote about the 'wrong amount of pepper' in a potato-kale recipe. I tried that recipe too, and since I really like pepper, it tasted great! But to each their own...
The Vegetarian Resource Group is also a great resource for vegetarian/vegan cookbooks and restaurant listings. I'm pleased that this cookbook came from them.
Good ideas for recipes.......2004-08-04
I was drawn to Vegan Meals since it was aimed at recipes for just a few people. I am the only vegan in my house, and I found this to be very helpful. It gave me ideas on good, quick meals, as well as what to keep stocked up on in my kitchen and pantry.
The downside of this book was that I found the recipes I tried to be kind of unappetizing. And one that I tried (something with potatoes and kale) had the wrong amount of pepper in it, and I ended up ruining all of my work and had no dinner. I think that in the future, I will have to try adding my own touches to the recipes to make them better for myself.
The resources in the front and back of this book are very helpful. I found a ton of simple, quick, and delicious meals and snacks to try, many of which I use almost every day. I didn't try all of the recipes, but the few I tried I didn't like. So, I guess it's up to you to venture out and try these; after all, I could just have a weird taste in food.
Showcases some of the best that vegan diets can offer.......2001-12-10
Vegan Meals For One Or Two: Your Own Personal Recipes is a splendidly composed collection of vegan recipes for delicious, nutritious, easy to make dishes that will adequately serve one or two people. Of particular interest for the novice vegan or vegetarian are the introductory sections on shopping for and purchasing ingredients, their proper storage, vegan meal planning, and kitchen safety. There are vegan recipes for breakfast, "One-Pot Wonders", meals to prepare and freeze for later dining, recipes for "Grab-and-Go" time constraints, desserts and snacks, as well as every day and special event cooking. From Upside-Down Pecan-Bran Muffins; Cucumber Raita; and Spur of the Moment Salad; to Almond Rice Pudding; Potato Tacos; and Pasta-Stuffed Roasted Peppers, Vegan Meals For One Or Two showcases some of the best that vegan diets can offer for both culinary taste and appetite satisfaction.

The nuts and bolts of making the original "blended quilt"..........2006-03-21
Quilters Yenter and McCloskey gave us the wonderful concept of the "blended quilt," and fine books and careful instructions on the subject. But for me, an absolute beginner, the question was how to put fabric with design at a very basic level. Mostek has given us a way to get to a colorful, contemporary interpretation of the concept of the "blended quilt" with some simple, yet amazing, methods. The projects are stunning and also shown with different colorways. After this, on to my own "blendings."
Stop being confused with those large floral prints!.......2006-03-03
I really appreciate Pamela Mostek for coming up with such an informative and easy to use book! I love those big floral prints, but have never figured out what to do with them until now. Ms. Mostek shows respect for us quilters by stating many times that WE are the designers. Her instructions are clear and very easy to follow. The quilts all have alternate views, showing what a change in fabric or color intensity can do for the patterns. While the patterns look difficult, they are quite do-able, following the directions one step at a time. the quilts work up quickly and are ideal for a hurry up gift. Purchasing this book was definitely "a good thing" on my part.

A Great Teacher's Field Guide.......2001-12-06
G. Harry Stine's Handbook of Model Rocketry is the bible of model rocketry. This book is the teacher's field guide. Nicely illustrated (which I give big applause), and simply written, anyone who wants to start model rocketry should treat themselves to this simple, yet thorough study in model rocketry, and a guide to the experimentation (safe experimentation, I may add) in that hobby. The authors and editors of this book have given something to the hobby that all of us enthusiasts should be proud of.

Book Description
Had enough?
Whether you find the government oppressive, the economy spiraling out of control, or if you simply want adventure, you're not alone. In increasing numbers, the idea is talked about openly: Expatriate.
Over three hundred thousand Americans emigrate each year, and more than a million go to foreign lands for lengthy stays.
But picking up and moving to another country feels like a step into the void. Where to go? How to begin? What to do?
Volume 2 of the Process Self-Reliance Series, this smartly designed two-color guidebook walks you through the world of the expat: the reasons, the rules, the resources, and the tricks of the trade, along with compelling stories and expertise from expatriate Americans on every continent.
Getting Out shows you where you can most easily gain residence, citizenship, or work permits; where can you live for a fraction of the cost of where you're living now; and what countries would be most compatible with your lifestyle, gender, age, or political beliefs.
So if you've had enough of what they're selling here and want to take your life elsewhere-well, isn't that the American way? At any rate, it's not illegal. Not yet, anyway.
Customer Reviews:
So Informative.......2007-05-17
This book was written so well. It covers everything you will need to know about getting out, most importantly, legal issues and taxation. The educated and intellectuals of America are smart enough to realize what is going on - and they are GETTING OUT.
All the info........2007-03-07
I spent a couple of weeks just skipping through different parts of this book, and I don't regret it. It's like cruising through a buffet of food that you really like. Then I sat down and read it cover to cover. I learned a lot, I appreciated the many web resources that it presented, and I am much more prepared for my future move. A good tool for those of us that love our country, deplore our government, and need the best chance at survival for us and our families.
Very well done........2007-02-24
This was an incredibly fun book to read. I agree with other reviewers - this book covers a lot without going too deep in any one thing. But it does contain several references to outside sources which have more information.
It is as much a motivational book as a how-to.
Also, I found some of the most useful information in here to be the many letters from people who had already made the jump and were living abroad.
A good place to start.......2007-01-25
The strength of this book is that it favors breadth rather than depth.
If you are thinking about leaving the US but don't really know where you'd like to go, or if you have a destination in mind but don't really know what you don't know about emigration, this book is for you. Getting Out covers the top 50 destinations for US expats, with information about the quality of health care, cost and standard of living, and social permissiveness. Also included are brief accounts of the experiences of expats living around the world. There is also good general information about the different pathways available to the potential expat.
Reading it will definately leave you with more questions than answers, since any comprehensive emigration/immigration guide to all the countries in the world would fill a small library. Getting Out will give you the basics and point you in the right direction to find more in-depth information. You won't find anything here that will help you decide to settle in one country over another, but it will help you either narrow your list or give you reason to consider some place you otherwise would not have.
Great place to Start.......2007-01-23
My boyfriend and I have been talking about moving out of the states, if just for a few years. I found this book to be very user friendly - it doesn't drag on with just the boring facts & it has a lot of real life examples from people who have moved out. It gives a ton of useful websites, and some information about each of the 50 countries that are most popular with expats. It was very enjoyable to read this book cover to cover.
Book Description
When it was originally published, Hybrid Cultures was foundational to Latin American cultural studies. This now-classic work features a new introduction in which Nestor Garcia Canclini calls for a cultural politics to contain the damaging effects of globalization and responds to relevant theoretical developments over the past decade. Garcia Canclini questions whether Latin America can compete in a global marketplace without losing its cultural identity. He moves with ease from the ideas of Gramsci and Foucault to economic analysis, from appraisals of the exchanges between Octavio Paz and Jorge Luis Borges to Chicano film and grafitti. Hybrid Cultures at once clarifies the development of democratic institutions in Latin America and reveals that the most destructive ideological trends are still going strong.
Book Description
A highly effective way to gain free publicity for any person or business that has a story to tell or a product to sell. 19 chapters dealing with Who needs talk show guests, What to say when you call the show/s, How to get Visa/MC merchant capability, Where to find 800#s and fulfillment centers and most important How to get invited back again and again on the same show.

A great step-by-step guide.......2006-02-08
I really enjoyed this book. Joe Sabah's down-to-earth, direct writing style really appealed to me. He takes you step-by-step through the process of getting on radio talk shows. In addition, I found this book to be incredibly motivating! I was so afraid to take on a project of this magnitude until I read the book. Excellent work!
Also, you can buy a database of radio shows from him separately. I purchased the additional database from him, and it was well worth the money. (I can't imagine that anyone would expect to get both at this low price.)
Step by step, shows you what to do.......2003-08-28
An excellent resource with all the nuts and bolts of getting
on radio talk shows, including samples of letters,post-cards press kit
materials, even templates for planning your phone
calls to producers. I am aware that personnel at radio stations
are constantly changing, so I am not concerned that the book
does not list them. The author updates this contact information
constantly and makes it available on disk for a modest cost.
He's been on hundreds of talk-shows, and this book shows you
how he got guest spots and how you can, too.
Tastes Great but Something is Missing!.......2000-08-17
I read the book "How to get on Radio Talk Show..." and I found it interesting yet missing something. The book shows you the procedures to get on the radio shows but leaves out the radio stations, telephone numbers, call letters and the names of the shows. For $30.00 dollars it should have provided an appendix containing this information. Instead, you must send away for the list on a diskette. The book without the diskette is like a recipe telling you whats in a dish but not including the amounts of each ingredient.

Book Description
The author recalls her early years in a small Jewish town in western Russia and the last days there as she and her mother prepare to join her father in the United States.
Leaving for America is a tender portrayal of life in a Russian Jewish community in the 1920s, as seen through the eyes of a seven-year-old girl who is leaving with her mother to start a new life in America. With affection and humor, author Roslyn Bresnick-Perry tells the story of saying goodbye to the people she lovesher well-meaning neighbors, her loving aunts, uncles, and grandparents, and her "best and worst friend," her cousin Zisl. Based on the author's own early childhood experience in the shtetl, it is a moving tribute to a community that no longer exists, after being destroyed in the Holocaust. It has a strong message for children of all ages about the importance of family, as well as recognizing, remembering, and honoring our cultural roots.

Americans coming of age in the 1960s faced a society in flux: attitudes about sex, race, and politics were radically changing; revolution was in the air and the nation seemed fractured, unable to find a common cause to unite its fragmented people. Author Deborah E. McDowell grew up near Birmingham, Alabama, the crucible of the civil rights movement, and the remarkable Leaving Pipe Shop is a memoir of those years. What distinguishes Pipe Shop from similar books is McDowell's emphasis on the everyday lives of ordinary people inhabiting that time and place. Martin Luther King, Ralph Abernathy, and George Wallace make only cameo appearances in this account; the main players on McDowell's stage are the members of her family, her church, and her neighborhood.
"Pipe Shop" refers to the black working-class neighborhood in Bessemer (just outside of Birmingham) where Deborah McDowell grew up. Her book begins with her return to Pipe Shop to investigate her father's death, part of the class-action lawsuit filed by victims of asbestos poisoning against the steel mill where he once worked. McDowell's trip home elicits plenty of memories--how her neighbors reacted to bus boycotts and boycotts of white-owned businesses, going to hear Martin Luther King speak, and the murder of her own activist pastor. Leaving Pipe Shop is an evocative portrait of one African American community's struggle to cope with the changes that swept through a nation.
Book Description
In the illuminating language of memory, Deborah McDowell tells the story of her family, living a segregated life in Bessemer, Alabama, where her father worked at U.S. Foundry and Pipe, nicknamed Pipe Shop. Through the intimate details of their daily lives, she shows us how civil rights affected a working-class town, among three generations of women and men. McDowell movingly uncovers a world rarely portrayed, where she was raised to love the sounds and meanings of words and to value a place and culture that has passed.

long lasting pleasure grows from the reading of this book........1997-05-04
McDowell has written a talking book. The dialog brings the people to life and gave this reader the feeling of accompanying the author on visits to her community. Matriarchial society, authoritarian upbringing of children, love and caring, laughter and sadness as well as the events of the 50's and 60's are memorably brought into focus. I urge you not to ignore this little-known gem of a book

Hasta la vista, baby.......2007-03-06
It should be called Operation Pan Pedro
Leaving Cuba describes the conditions leading up to and after Castro takes over Cuba from the perspective of those who left Cuba to come to the United States. It is a fascinating read.
I went to a private, boarding high school in the Southeast with five Cuban refugees. The two that I know about now are
1) The Rector of St. Johns' Episcopal Church in Washington,D.C., The` church of the President, and
2) A Superior Court judge in New Jersey.
I'd say that if these two are any indication Cuba's loss was our gain.
The book is an interesting read. Just imagine if you had been bundled up and shipped off to a foreign land where you didn't understand the language at age 10, how would you react?
Recommended for anyone interested in Cuban/American relations.

THIS BOOK IS AWESOME!!!.......2003-03-12
I loved this book. I travel around the U.S. quite a bit. I'm really glad that someone wrote a book like this. I didn't even know we had English-style castles here in the U.S.. I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone looking to save money yet still experience a European vacation.
Inaccurate and Misinformed.......2003-01-12
Unfortunately, Ms. Rudisill does not know her ABC's of Great Britain. Right off the bat in the book's intro, she destroys her credibility by suggesting that travelers get into the U.K. mood by listening to CD's of "British" greats like U2 and Sinead O'Connor (and O'Connor's name is misspelled in the book, to add insult to injury). Does she realize that these acts are thoroughly, patriotically Irish?
Therefore, many of the "British-related sites" she highlights throughout her book are dubious. For example, she recommends dozens of Irish pubs throughout the U.S. as genuine "Anglophile" outposts: "The owners are from Killarney," she writes of one pub. Yet again, does she realize that Killarney is in Ireland, NOT the UK?! The Union Jack does not fly over Killarney, Ireland, which directly conflicts with the book's cover art, which displays a Union Jack and is meant to give the impression that the book is about UK sites in the USA.
It's not simply what's in the book that's erroneous, it's what Rudisill has left out. In guiding readers through New York's Central Park, she completely omitted Strawberry Fields, the tribute to John Lennon--a Liverpool, UK native, and one of the most prolific songwriters and musicians of our time. How could she possibly have missed that must-see?
Much of the text is also repetitive; an introductory paragraph to places of interest is repeated throughout the book. That doesn't make for very original or engaging writing.
I returned my book. Any Anglophile with an ounce of sense (e.g., the difference between the UK and Ireland) and access to the internet can devise a far more genuine itinerary of British points of interest in the USA.
Blokes, start your engines!.......2002-12-18
With three kids in college, it's not likely I'll be able to afford a trip to Great Britain soon. No matter, with this Drive to book I can enjoy all things British and still be back at work on Monday. I loved the way the sections were organized: I could build an itinerary with the easy charts and listings or indulge my live-in-a-castle fantasy and spend the weekend seeing only that. I especially liked the "Theme Tours" section for a great escape from the everyday. This book is terrific for weekend getaways, but could easily be used to plan a longer trip. Indexes by category, indexes by zip code, websites- this book makes it easy to figure out where to go, what to eat and where to stay. The "Weekend" section ("Weekend in Philadelphia", "Weekend in Albany", etc) really sets this book apart from most travel books for helping to make the most out of only two days. If you can't afford/don't have the time to go to Great Britain, this book will help you find it right here in the US.

Book Description
Joan Mitchell (1926-1992) was a pre-eminent painter of the Abstract Expressionist generation, and, along with Lee Krasner and Helen Frankenthaler, one of the few female painters of her era to gain critical and public acclaim. She came to attention in the early 1950s but only recently has her work won the recognition it truly merits. Her large-scale gestural paintings register a great acuity of feeling and tremendous vitality. Leaving America documents Joan Mitchell's exhibition at Hauser and Wirth Gallery, London, which featured works made between 1960 and 1965, after she had relocated from New York to France. In the paintings of this period Mitchell moved away from the all-over style and bright palette of earlier compositions, instead deploying more sombre hues and dense central masses of color. The brushwork in these paintings is nonetheless full of zest, the paint flung and squeezed on to the canvases, spilling and spluttering across surfaces and smeared on by hand.
