Bloodshed, long marches, starvation and much worse.......2003-07-26
The collaborative effort of civil war enthusiasts George Skoch and Mark W. Perkins, Lone Star Confederate: A Gallant And Good Soldier Of The Fifth Texas Infantry is a collection of letters penned by a Confederate solider. Eyewitness accounts of bloodshed, aftermath, long marches, starvation and much worse fill the pages of this riveting firsthand testimony of the front lines of America's deadliest war. Lone Star Confederate is a welcome and strongly recommended addition to Civil War collections and reading lists.

There are so many biographies of Sigmund Freud, not to mention the mountains of scholarly matter surrounding his theories, that it's hard to imagine a fresh, readable, convincing new approach to his life and work. Paul Ferris--an outsider who has never been psychoanalyzed, much less trained as an analyst--has done the trick. Agnostic about the true value of Freud's achievements, Ferris prefers to proceed on the reasonable assumption that Freud is worth studying sheerly because of his overarching influence on our culture. Consequently, the early chapters involve some fence-sitting, with unnamed fanatical acolytes and critics alike held at arm's length.
But nothing is so striking as the extent to which this mainstream biographer has learned the lessons of Freud's harshest critics. There is no apology--and not much surprise even--in the description of Freud's entanglement with (and indefensible defense of) the homicidal quack Wilhelm Fliess. Whatever else one may admire in Freud, Ferris has no trouble being straightforward about shabby motives, unprofessional behavior, or Freud's arrogance in matters about which he was sometimes almost comically ignorant. What praise this biography does have to offer, meanwhile, is qualified. Ferris says Freud's great achievement was getting us to take sex seriously, but seems to admit that he may have replaced ignorance with confusion. He also expresses well-grounded awe for Freud's writing ability and productivity, but implies, in a well-judged chapter on the Dora case, both that the application of his writing talent to science was a serious loss to imaginative literature and that losing him to literature might have been a blessed release for some of his patients. --Richard Farr
Book Description
This startling book provides new insight into an increasingly controversial figure whose work has left an indelible mark on the modern world
Today, nearly sixty years after his death, the field of psychoanalysis still swarms with controversy about Sigmund Freud's career. His work has been picked apart by fellow theorists, who seek either to canonize his intellectual prowess or to vilify both the man and his work.
Paul Ferris's new biography avoids this fashionable polemic, attending to the details of Freud's personal existence. A balanced, fair-minded work, free from the technicalities of psychoanalytic jargon, Dr. Freud is a robust and sympathetic portrait-a stunning look at a complex soul.
Customer Reviews:
Highly readable but hardly objective.......2001-01-15
Paul Ferris has undoubtly written a highly readable biography of one of the icons of the XX century. The book may be broken down into three main parts: the first one shows Freud until his mid-life or so and focuses on Freud's obsessive drive for recognition; the second part, is a very superficial account of Freud's threories intertwinded with some irrelevant details of his life, and the third one is an account of the internal and external struggle of the psychoanalytic movement.
Ferris' writing style is polished and entertaining. However, after 100 pages or so, Ferris (who acknowledges to have no psychology or psychiatry background) loses his objectivity and starts to criticize and put down Freud's theories. This is not necessarily bad, but the criticism is on very superficial grounds while failing to place Freud and his thought in the proper context of the late XIX and early XX. Freud thought is only presented in its outline (which is something expected of a biography) but for the sake of simplicity and brevity the outline lacks a meaningful presentation of the issues behind Freud's theories. The oversimplification of the essence of Freud's thought makes it appear somewhat grotesque and irrational.
There has been much dispute on Freud as a "scientist" and psychoanalisis as a "science" and Ferris has a go at both. Unfortunately, Ferris forgets that both Freud and his thought fall within the concept of "social science" not "physical science", thus many of the theories and implications are based on case studies, which obviously carry highly individualised connotations some of which can or cannot be generalised to the entire population.
In summary, this book joins sides against Freudian thought and therefore hardly provides a truthful insight into the man and his theories. A reader looking for an introduction to Freudian thought is advised to look elsewhere. A reader looking for some some insight into the man will find plenty of biased, irrelevant and selectively chosen details that do not paint the entire character of Freud.
Frank and honest........1999-11-11
This is the first biography that I have read (of any one) that has kept me interested to the last page. That says alot for the content and flow of the book. As a psychology student, I have studied Freud's theories. This book helped put it all in perspective, along side theries of Jung and Adler. It showed me how 'way out' his theories were for the time but how they had a certain logic given the type of patients he had and the attitiude towards sex at the time. It's a fascinating read - and strikes me as very frank and honest. There's no glamourising of the man himself - but why should there be.. It's a story of a man's life and an interesting one at that.
Excellent Peak into the Mind of Freud.......1999-09-16
This is a great biography. Though, the reader can find themselves lost at some times, the overall book is a wonderful peak into the mind of Dr. Freud. We glimpse Freud in new ways- through his own letters, his own shortcomings, his fears, his hopes, his dreams. The picture that history paints of an overlly egotistical man is blown away as we begin to see the human Freud, not the illustration of a sex-obsessed psychoanaylsis. We walk through Freud's pioneering days & can truly understand his outlook on life and the amazing gifts he has given to those who succeed him.
This is the best modern biography of Freud........1998-08-29
Factual and at times irreverent, the chief value of this excellent biography is its objective examination of Freud's work, his accomplishments and his failings, his genius and his humanity. If you're a slavish worshiper of the Freud myth, don't read it. But if you want the truth, it will open your eyes while it amuses and entertains with a prose style that is in itself a delight.

"Women don't have to be thin to be fit," writes Rochelle Rice. Fitness is not about weight, but about the body, mind, and spirit. Her exercise program, designed for the physical and psychological needs of plus-size women, aims to empower women to get active and reclaim the joy of movement. Real Fitness for Real Women emphasizes exercising for the health and psychological benefits--and the pleasure of it!--rather than for weight loss.
Most exercise books, videos, and gyms, frankly, are demoralizing for large-size women. They usually emphasize the goal of slimness, with impossibly slender women demonstrating exercise routines that would be uncomfortable, even risky, for large women. Rice, instead, studied the biomechanics of large women and developed a six-week, 25-exercise program based on their particular needs.
Everything you need is here: step-by-step warm-up, aerobic dance (starting with just five minutes), strength training (without weights), stretching, and meditation. Each exercise is explained clearly and most are illustrated by photographs of plus-size women. Unfortunately, the aerobic moves are not illustrated, which can make them confusing to novice exercisers. (An accompanying video would be wonderful.)
Besides the exercise program, Rice emphasizes the emotional and spiritual components: getting motivated, creating support, and battling binges, illustrated using stories about other large women. Rice is a certified fitness trainer with a master's degree in plus-size exercise. --Joan Price

Fitness You Can Do.......2006-05-03
Rochelle Rice's book offers realistic things for plus-size women to do. Her approach is thoughtful, moderate, and smart. Truly an expert on fitness for the plus-size woman, Rice has provided a book that will help women of any size love their bodies, feel healthy and stay active. This is a must-have book.
Rochelle has changed my life!.......2002-01-14
I met Rochelle at a conference in June 2001. This book has become my bible! She is a woman like no other-her passion and commitment to helping women of all kinds heal and reconnect to their bodies is unparallelled! I work with her doing Health Coaching/Personal Training once a month-I live 3 hours away from her studio-that should say something about how beneficial and rewarding my work with her is! I wholeheartedly recommend her book [....]
Rochelle is Amazing!!!.......2001-12-30
I absolutely love this book and the author. I had the pleasure of meetting Rochelle at the annual International Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Conference in June 2001. She is a wonderful woman who cares very deeply about the health and fitness of overweight women. I attended several of her fitness sessions and for the first time in many years was not embarassed about my body or my (in)abilities. Her book and video are both invaluable. I owe my current sanity to her. She taught me that it is okay to be a large women as long as I move. Move my body and move my soul. Rochelle will always get five stars from me.
Unique, helpful, thoughtful.......2001-08-08
and full of great information. Rochelle Rice has given her readers information on her background as well as helpful tips and insights. The exercises use photographs of large sized women and offer tips on how monitoring yourself and your limits. I appreciate that she address more than just exercise in her books, she address the person. I am very excited to have this book in my library.
FINALLY - a fitness book REALLY written for larger women.......2001-06-28
Just getting into the book and the program, but I'm happy to have finally found a fitness book that is really written for larger size women. The pictures are of REAL WOMEN doing the exercises, not thin models demonstrating exercises for the "rest of us!" Keep up the good work!

Best Mushroom Sauce Recipe Ever.......2007-03-04
I haven't made too many recipes from this book yet, but I plan to. I was looking for a sauce to put over a plain burger and I found it here. Absolutely wonderful! Dress up plain chicken or beef with this winner and turn something commonplace into a gourmet meal. I love the chit-chat of the author as well.
Gotta Love Nick.......2005-10-07
I also have ALL of Nick Stellino's cookbooks. This one is at the top of my list (along with CUCINA AMORE, and FAMILY KITCHEN, it's so hard to choose!). One thing they all have in common is how organized they are, presented in table of contents by category to find what you're looking for quickly---soups, entrees, side dishes, appetizers, desserts, etc.. Once there, in this particular book, each recipe is listed by name along with the page number--no need to even thumb through the section at all. The "Chicken with Garlic sauce" is 5 star. Even my simplest vegetable dishes have improved, and w/o any additional effort. Broccoli and carrots have never tasted as good nor looked so appetizing. Goodbye to boiling and steaming! In summary I'd have to simply state that there is something new to find in each of his cookbooks, one book doesn't cover it all; but this book is as good a place to start as anywhere. Like all journeys, it starts with the first step, and in this case, your first Nick Stellino cookbook...your journey will not end there once you start!
Minimum Effort - Maximum Result Cookbook.......2002-08-29
Stellino is passionate about the cuisine he grew up with from Sicily and wants to share it with homecooks. So, his style is to minimize ingredients, techniques and equipment so that all flavor is there, but without much of the fuss.
As but one example from this great collection from the Mediterranean: Moraccan Chicken and Almond Pie, simplified using phyllo sheets and chicken, is heavenly concoction of Moroccan spiciness with cumin, cinammon, et al. Meditteranean Shepherd's Pie substitutes beef stew meat, chicken thighs and Italian sausage for the traditional lamb pie, topped with Romano cheese crust! Along with entrees are wine suggestion.
Appetizers are highlighted by unbelievable Shrimp Fritters with Spicy Mayonnaise sauce, while favorite from Pasta offerings is Cannelloni with Prosciutoo and Zucchini, which is rich combo of garlic and cheese and ham.
Desserts are well represented by such as Chocolate Zabaglione which features strawberries with delectable Marsala pudding cream. Yummo! Also try the Coffee Cheesecake and Ricotta Raisin Tart.
This like each of Nick's cookbooks provides the home gourmet with ample sophisticated recipes that aren't above what I would determine a medium skill level at the max, but turn out consistently fine, flavorful dishes that are unique and memorable.
Exotic Flavors with Supermarket Ingredients.......2002-03-03
Unlike many cookbooks we have purchased there is no need for a mail order source for ingredients. Very affordable shopping lists with easily found ingredients leading to excellent results. The Hummus and Tabbouleh are better than that at a local Lebanese restaurant that is touted for these condiments. My wife made the Ginger Tuna which was a revelation to us.( I only knew tuna came in a can, which had no resenblence to the great steaks using mostly pantry items.)The Spanish Chicken with Almond Sauce had nutmeg and cinnamon notes that made a great cold noghts meal. The Lemon Souffle with Blueberry Sauce (using frozen blueberries) hit the right note bringing a bright fresh color, texture and flavor to the table.
Again a strong point is the repeated use of ingredients rather than having to buy something that will languish in your cupboard never to be used again. Cauliflower with Nutmeg, and Ginger Glazed Carrots as examples. I can't be the only one who has thrown away a ginger root that was long forgotten in the fridge after a once in a great while stir-fry.
Look at the sample pages and the photos. The food tastes as good as it looks. As to Stellinos "chat" you can look at a recipe for yourself in the samples to see what you think. I think he sets a great tone for inviting you into his kitchen to bring new flavors to your family that are easy, affordable and satisfying.
My Favorite Cookbook.......2001-12-15
My mom says you can tell how good a cookbook is by how messy the pages are. If that's the case then one look at my copy of Nick Stellino's book would speak volumes. I have really been pleased with everything I have tried out of the book. The food has a gourmet feel with out being pretencious or overwhelming. Excellent!

Book Description
More than 56 million American households have dogs they consider members of their family! If these dogs could talk they may wag a tale similar to this story, inspired by an old canine and pug dog named, "Buster". You will be entertained and humored how this most unusual shaman works his own pedigree of magic as a member of his household family. Affectionately known as "man's best friend", a dog is in the relationship business and some dogs develop extraordinary people skills. Our pets' behavior offers us many lessons and insights on how to improve our own relationships. That is what this book "talks" about! Read this, and you too will be a believer!
This book makes interesting reading for a few good reasons. It may be the first "dog diary" ever published! It is a family story. It is a story about how "traditional" and "sacred" family values are relevant to our survival and enjoyment of a good life - from a dog's perspective, of course!
If you don't have a dog in your life, you may want one after reading this! Or, if you do have a pet, you will gain a new appreciation for that loved one!

Old Friends.......2000-07-28
I first purchased this book about 15 years ago, Georgia use to do a show on my local PBS station and I had started to quilt with a church group. Time goes by, rotary cutters and mats all make sewing our little projects so much more enjoyable. I love her BIG designs that work up so nicely. Lots of room for creativity.

Book Description
Why should books drive the academic hierarchy? This controversial question posed by Lindsay Waters ignited fierce debate in the academy and its presses, as he warned that the "publish or perish" dictum was breaking down the academic system in the United States. Waters hones his argument in this pamphlet with a new set of questions that challenge the previously unassailable link between publishing and tenure.
As one of the most important and innovative editors in the humanities and social sciences, Waters has long witnessed the self-destruction occurring in the academic world because of the pressure to publish. Drawing upon his years of experience, he reveals how this principle is destroying the quality of educational institutions and the ideals of higher learning. It is time for scholars to rise up, Waters argues, and reclaim the governance of their institutions.

Aesthetic-political provocation of a US 'world gone wrong,'.......2004-04-23
Enemies of Promise offers a prodding and lucid intervention into the glut and glamor of the over-production system and managerial model of corporate values that has taken hold in US academia and threatens to ruin creativity and block the future. As a series of polemics and reflective musings, the extended "essay" holds up very well and should have a broad and lucid impact, as parts of it already have had on the MLA and in UP circles. I liked the sustained and situated use made of Kantian 'judgment,' and the appeal to the ethical and aesthetic individual make-up of that judgment via Kierkegaard, Augustine, and Emerson. The way Enemies of Promise invokes Fish and Rorty, these anti-theory forces do look like 'covering cherubs' blocking vision and the 'new spirit' future from coming in, in the Blakean poetic and political sense. The work stays timely, and offers much good council to the young and to the over-professionalized and administered unto death, which here in the UC system say I feel strong doses of as "becoming production." Plus, the work offers some ways and tactics of value to move forward. In short, this is a real and bracing work of moral courage and aesthetic-political provocation that holds up very well as an intervention and over-view of a 'world gone wrong.'

Loggins's book, cowritten with wife Julia, shares its title with his album, both of which illustrate the couple's belief that love means falling in love again every day. Told with lyrics, poetry, letters, and journal entries, it is an intensely personal exploration. Says bestselling author Julia Cameron of the Loggins's The Unimaginable Life: "It takes courage to write a book like this--and courage to read it."

Co-Committment: the road to healing issues together.......2000-12-28
This book has transformed more than a dozen lives that I personally know...including a corporate trainer and his wife. Kenny and Julia show us their mundane, common fears, as individuals and a couple. They are eachother's mirror, making infinitly clear their shadow side. Instead of hiding, shrinking and running away (which they both did), they return to stick it out, work it out, and discover Spirit's answer to the questions that come up for all of us committed to co-create BIG LOVE! Are you up to playing a BIG GAME? The game of BIG LOVE? Then The Unimaginable Life will inspire, direct, and affirm that hearts knit together can stretch, bend, enfold and embrace one antoher. Shadows come up, get healed, and deliberately create a new space for the Light of Love to be at Home. Relationship is the Laser modality for experiencing our higher purpose and reason for being on this planet.
Pathetic.......2000-02-21
1 out of 2 marriages end in divorce and now I know why. Children being raised by children needing someone to tell them to grow up and accept responsibility for decisions made. Codependency reigns in this book!
Truthful and honest.......1999-12-14
I've read this book four times because it has helped me immensely. Recently, Big love entered my life and my life is Kenny and Julia's life. I could have written this book, that's how close to home it all hits. A section of the book, "Our Truths" is amazing. The love, trust, truthfulness, and sincerity with which this book is written is amazing. FEAR is the reason we lsiten to our heads and not our hearts. When we follow our hearts, fear no longer is in control. It's taken me a long time to understand this, and I'm not quite there, but I inch closer each day. God (Spirit) wants us to have love in our lives. When we look at things that way, we have the capability to view Big Love as a gift. The key is to be open to Big Love...even if you are in a relationship. God has his own plan for each of us and all plans lead to love if we allow it and follow our hearts.
Thank you Julia and Kenny for having the courage to help.......1999-11-06
The book is so real. Filled with the ghosts and scars of the past and sorting through their feelings and emotions with poetic love inspired prose, bearing their souls. I wish that they taught a workshop for a weekend somewhere. In fact, I mentioned it to the program director of the Omega Institute that he ought to extend an invitation to lead a seminar. You are pathfinders on the path of love.
Powerful New Way To Love !.......1999-09-12
This is the most powerful book I have ever read on love and relationships.Within these magical pages rest some very fruitful, practical ways to find, and keep, real love. I devoured this book with a ravenous appetite until I got close to the end;at that point I began to slow down my reading and ration out just a little bit each day- I didn't want it to end! Do yourself one of the biggest favors of your life and read this heartful story.
