      Book Description

Alex Kozulin, translator of Vygotsky's work and distinguished Russian-American psychologist, has written the first major intellectual biography about Vygotsky's theories and their relationship to twentieth-century Russian and Western intellectual culture. He traces Vygotsky's ideas to their origins in his early essays on literary criticism, Jewish culture, and the psychology of art, and he explicates brilliantly his psychological theory of language, thought, and development.

Kozulin's biography of Vygotsky also reflects many of the conflicts of twentieth-century psychology--from the early battles between introspectionists and reflexologists to the current argument concerning the cultural and social, rather than natural, construction of the human mind.

Vygotsky was a contemporary of Freud and Piaget, and his tragically early death and the Stalinist suppression of his work ensured that his ideas did not have an immediate effect on Western psychology. But the last two decades have seen his psychology become highly influential while that of other theoretical giants has faded.

        Book Description

Contrary to popular belief, the most frequent causes of neuromuscular, joint, or skeletal pain can be traced to your lifestyle: unconscious habits that involve the way you breathe, stand, and move and the way you store physical and emotional stress in your tissues. Given this fact, if you suffer from chronic pain, or treat people suffering from chronic pain, you may need to consider replacing expensive, often inefficient pain treatment with self-help methods for reversing the way physical, mental, and emotional stresses affect your muscles, joints, and bones. Effortless Pain Relief presents a unique mind-body program for overcoming chronic pain, developed by acclaimed alternative health-care practitioner Dr. Ingrid Bacci.

In Effortless Pain Relief, you'll find a simple explanation of how stress creates chronic pain, along with clear, simple, and powerful self-help techniques for reducing and even eliminating pain. The guiding principle in this program for self-healing from chronic pain is to develop greater awareness of your body and sensitivity to it. You can change your lifestyle habits -- and eliminate your pain -- by adopting body awareness techniques that eliminate tension. Chapter by chapter, Effortless Pain Relief shows you how to release deep physical, mental, and emotional stresses through simple breathing techniques, to reduce consciously the effort and tension in your muscles, and to master and eliminate stressful emotions like fear and anger by learning to control the physical tensions that these feelings create.

Dr. Bacci also guides you in a process that will allow you to let go of mental and emotional attitudes that unconsciously create stress and physical pain. She shows you how to release emotional conflicts that contribute to pain and teaches you how to conquer the fear of physical pain -- which can actually trigger pain.

Dr. Bacci cites numerous case studies from the thousands of patients she has helped during the past fifteen years. She also tells the extraordinary story of her own complete recovery from three years of being bedridden and crippled from a severe case of the chronic pain syndrome fibromyalgia. The curative techniques through which she healed herself, and with which she has helped her thousands of clients achieve freedom from pain, are now available for everyone in Effortless Pain Relief.

Dr. Bacci's groundbreaking, accessible program offers deceptively simple yet profoundly effective ways to leave pain behind, enhance your vitality, and find an effortless route to a pain-free life.

Wow, what a fun little book! This book contains a slue of fun and tasty recipes, all made with that quintessential American treat, the Twinkie! My favorite two were definitely the Chocolate Twinkie Trifle, and the Chocolate Twinkie Pops - two hits with the kids.

So, if you want to really make a connection with the kids, get this book, and make one of the fun and easy recipes. I give this book my highest recommendations!

Come on, lighten up! After getting this book I went to a party with my Twinke sushi, what a hit! A friend made the Twinke wedding cake! So much fun for a little book!

This was the identical book I saw in a small, specialty shop, but cost a lot less. I only wish the corners of this book arrived not folded over.

What a wonderful little book! This book takes childhood comfort food to a new level. If you are a babyboomer, this book is a must--even if you do not cook. If you are not a babyboomer, buy the book anyway--you will not be sorry.

My 8 year old daugther saw this book and wanted it. We got it for her for Christmas and were pleasantly surprised with the many clever and fun recipes. We have only tried 1 so far, but look forward to trying some more. History of Twinkies, bright pictures and easy directions fill the book.

3 out of 5 stars Hand drawn instructions:.......2002-05-08

I didn't care for the hand drawn and striped pictures to indicate light and dark. I prefer seeing colors and a color coded chart, etc. I found this book off putting because of this. I didn't even feel like attempting patterns in it and canceled another book by this author afraid that the patterns would be similar. Sorry. This book could have been very good. I would advise checking out the sample pages before purchasing this book so you aren't disappointed.

This is the only quilting book that I've ever seen that clearly goes step by step through each phase of the quilting process. She tells you which fabrics to buy and how to cut them in plain english with easy to follow cutting charts. I have never seen this before and it's a huge help to the less advanced quilter. The patterns are beautiful. I am really pleased that I picked this book up!

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Touch Their Hearts.......2002-12-11

For the brain dead, for those who need to practice for spontaneous moments, for those who just need one more little idea because the well has run dry, this little book is a nifty package of ideas on how to let a child know that he is loved.

I don't mock this book, 101 Ways to Tell Your Child 'I Love You' because it is pretty handy. (I put myself in the second category, those who need to practice spontaneity). Neither do I make fun who might find the book useful because we could all use a new idea occasionally. I suspect there are many people who don't need this advice on a day-to-day basis, though may occasionally just be stumped for a new idea, but for the rest of us, the book offers its promised 101 tips of sending an unmistakable message of love to a child (and could be adapted for grown-up children, I think.)

Aside from the good ideas, the major strength of this book is that it doesn't lecture but instead delivers ideas in very short doses, one or two sentences at the most, an idea per page, with easy-to-do suggestions. Some require a little more effort than others, such as preparing "coupons" for a hug or a kiss, but most are extremely easy to do, and require only a moment or two of time, and the desire to show love.

There is something for everyone here, mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, grandparents, stay-at-homes or career parents, or anyone who wants to deliver the message to a child. Not every idea will be of interest to every person, but even a handful of them, tried occasionally or often, will help a child get the word.

                Here are just a few:

See how many words you and your child can make from the letters I-L-O-V-E-Y-O-U.

Leave surprise love notes in unexpected places, such as the bathroom mirror or the front door.

Mail a letter or a card to your child, even if you haven't gone away. Getting mail is a special event for children.

Go for a walk in the moonlight, or in a new snowfall or even a warm summer rain.

Make a heartshaped I LOVE YOU puzzle. Write your message of love on the cardboard and then cut it into pieces so your child can put it back together.

Wake your child with a kiss.

Let your child "accidentally" overhear you singing their praises to others. (My daughter pretends to object to this, claiming she hates it when parents talk about their children with other parents, but, luckily for me, I see the secret smile of pleasure.)

And, the clincher: Make a will naming a guardian or executor. It is the most loving and thoughtful thing you can do for a child.

I've personally tried many of these, and found them hugely helpful when just a simple "I love you" isn't enough. Some I'd actually thought of myself!!--such as making up a simple song featuring her name or going for a walk in the rain or moonlight.

She quickly caught on to one little ritual I started, which was to list two or three or four things I loved about her, or that she had done especially well, each night as I tucked her in. Very soon my list was interrupted with, "And what else?" "And what else?"

Kids love love is the message I take from that. It's so simple. Offer this book to anyone who has, or once was, a child.

                Book Description

The first biography of one of the most influential singers in jazz, whose ethereal voice and uncanny phrasing have inspired performers from Nancy Wilson to Marvin Gaye to Frankie Valli.

Born in Cleveland in 1925, "Little" Jimmy Scott lost his mother at age thirteen, the same year he was diagnosed with Kallman's syndrome. The disease stunted his growth and earned him his nickname, but it also left him with a haunting voice, a mesmerizing voice. He soon built a following as a singer touring with Lionel Hampton's great orchestra in the '40s, then performed with many of the stars of the '50s, from Lester Young to Charlie Parker to Dinah Washington, and was signed by Savoy Records. He thought he had his big break when, in 1962, Ray Charles produced what was by all accounts Jimmy's best work, Falling in Love Is Wonderful. But when it was forced off the shelves by contract disputes, Scott worked as an orderly and clerk in Cleveland for almost two decades. Fans thought he was dead-until songwriter Doc Pomus's funeral in March of 1991.

As Pomus had instructed in his will, Jimmy sang over his friend's coffin. High-pitched and androgynous, his voice seemed to come out of thin air, transcending gender and age, evoking pure heartbreak. No one knew who he was-heads turned, celebrities conferred, record executives were reduced to tears-until finally Lou Reed turned around and whispered, "He's Jimmy Scott, the greatest jazz singer in the world." And so he was. By the next morning, he had a record deal with Sire that relaunched his career with the masterpiece All the Way, and he has been performing to packed clubs ever since. With full cooperation from Jimmy, his siblings, spouses, and colleagues from Ray Charles to Ruth Brown, Faith in Time is at once an intimate biography, an invaluable history of a life that spanned big band to bebop to pop, and the poignant story of a man whose voice will live forever.

4 out of 5 stars This is my introduction to Jimmy Scott.......2005-09-30

Lemme say I was not that big nor was a fan to Jimmy until I got to know instanly. This marks as a first-time lover or beginner to the legendary of Jazz, Blues and all other types of music, Mr. Jimmy Scott. Everybody's been talking 'bout him. 'Cuz he sure has a sweet and sensational voice, one's whose range that can stand tall from anybody. Nobody gonna get this or learn more about the man unless they read this book 'cuz it'll take further than is has. I once dug him while singing a song on David Sanborn's CD "Pearls" and it's pretty amazing on how he sounds 'cuz I thought at 1st it was a lady singing like Oleta Adams or so but now it's a male who can sing like a lady blues singer or a jazz singer. I'm talkin' bout Jimmy Scott man!!! To me, I've been thinking 'bout bein' a journalist or writer somehow in the future if that's what's on my mind a minute ago. 'Cuz I'ma be like the black version or next coming of David Ritz, Gary Giddins, Quincy Troupe, Mike Dyson, Nelson George, among others.

Bravo to Bro. David Ritz for doing such a good job on this extradionary book. I wish more from him in the future.

Very interesting read about Jimmy Scott and the times in which he lived.I do feel he comes across somewhat "wimpy".He never seems to get tough with the people that constantly take advantage of him, and he always finds excuses concerning his "faults", blaming others.
He grew up in a very dysfunctional family(especially after his mother was killed)...he married several women who ran out on him(prostitution), his father was a real self-serving lout!and he gets screwed over by greedy music execs again and again.
The author, Ritz, never really gets to the nitty gritty of just WHO Scott is...treating him with kids gloves despite the many references to drinking bouts, pot smoking, wife beating, mood swings, and wierd behavior.Though this book is not a "puff piece" read,it seems to tolerate behaviour which (to put it bluntly)hints that Jimmy Scott is an obnoxious s.o.b.
I got so frustrated with Ritz's portrayal of Scott's attitude I wanted to grab him(Scott) by the scruff o' the neck and smack some sense into him!
The man can sing though. He can really sing.

5 out of 5 stars A gripping biography which reads like a novel.......2003-11-14

Musicians will also enjoy David Ritz's Faith In Time, a survey of the life of Jimmy Scott. Orphaned as a teen and suffering from a syndrome which kept his voice unnaturally high, he toured with Lionel Hampton in the 1940s and achieved a career breakthrough twenty years later - then went back to being an orderly and shipping clerk. Faith In Time recounts his rise and fall, providing a gripping biography which reads like a novel with its action and insights.

                  Book Description

In 1940, while the Germans occupied Holland, fourteen-year-old Edith van Hessen was filling her diary with the intimate, carefree details of a typical teenager's life — thoughts about boys, school, her family, her friends, her future. By 1942, as Edith was contemplating her first kiss, the Germans had begun to escalate their war against the Jews. Soon this bright, fun-loving girl was grappling with one of the most unfathomable events in human history. Edith's family — assimilated Dutch Jews — were caught in the cross fire of the Holocaust, and Edith began a bitter struggle to survive.

In this extraordinary work, Edith Velmans weaves together revealing entries from her diaries with reminiscences and letters smuggled between family members during the occupation. Edith's Story stands as a profoundly important addition to the literature of the Holocaust, documenting one girl's grief, loss, courage, and ultimate triumph over devastating tyranny and despair. For as Edith is hidden in plain sight by a Christian family, we witness how a young woman must deny, bargain with, and finally face the horrors of war — and how, confronting evil as a child, Edith survives to become an extraordinary woman.

                  5 out of 5 stars I liked Edith's Story.......2004-11-26

Edith's Story written by Edith Velmans is a true story about courage, love, and survival during WWII. Edith's family is Jewish living in Holland during WWII. Her eldest brother Guss moves to America before the start of the war. The rest of the family does not want to leave. They don't believe Hitler will actually start rounding up Jews. They soon find out they were wrong. They first have to sew the yellow stars of David on all of their clothing. Then they are not allowed to go to the same school with non-Jews. Things keep getting worse and worse. Especially when Edith's mother has to go to the hospital and get her hip operated on. Her family soon decides to find places where Edith and her older brother, Jules, can go into hiding. Jules goes to live with a farmer up north and Edith goes to live with a family were she plays the part of Netti. A friend whose parent's have fallen ill and cannot take care of her. The rest of the story is about how Edith takes all of her courage and love to survive the war and worse the braking apart of her loving family.
I loved the book Edith's Story. It is the most loving heartwarming book I have ever read. For someone to have that much strength in such an awful part of history like Edith is amazing. This was a very good book. I normally do not like to read Holocaust books but I enjoyed this one a lot. This is a truly moving book with so much great hope in it. I recommend this book to any one because it is a wonderful story.

                  5 out of 5 stars A very moving story.......2001-12-27

This book is an absolute treasure. It is a very moving account of an adolescent Jewish girl's life in Holland as the Nazi regime moved in and took over. The book contains some of her actual diary entries written as a teenager along with her present-day adult comments to help put the entries into perspective. I would highly recommend this book to everyone, but most especially to young people. It's a gripping story of a girl from the past with great courage and love of life.

                  4 out of 5 stars Looking Over One's Shoulder.......2001-07-24

This book may not have the deep poignancy of Anne Frank's diary, as its author tells her story from an adult vantage point. But it does offer a vivid picture of day-to-day life as a jew in hiding in Nazi-occupied Holland. I readily felt Edith's anxiety, as she attempted to pass for a gentile, far from friends and family, and not knowing what had become of those she loved. The story also has a deep honesty -- it is clear, for example, that she often found the family who saved her difficult, and that she felt resentments as well as gratitude. I'm sure that this is, in fact, how it felt, and am grateful to Edith Velmans for the straightforward telling of her story.

                  5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down........2001-03-02

I've read a number of accounts by Jews who were hidden by heroic friends and strangers during the Holocaust. But Edith Velmans' story stands out. I found myself totally drawn into her idyllic teenage life in the Hague as war slowly began to overshadow the sunshine of her youthful pusuits. She lovingly paints a warm but realistic picture of her community and family. I was especially touched by the letters she shares from her parents. Velmans also relates her psychological adjustment of going into hiding and taking on another identity, something other accounts have rarely mentioned. Yet through it all, Velmans captures the fact that despite the agony of going through such a painful experience, she emerged with her courage intact. I highly recommend this book, especially for teachers in search of good reading material for high school students studying the Holocaust. But anyone would enjoy this book. I read it one evening, unable to stop.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding contribution to Holocaust Studies........2000-04-04

Edith's Story is the true story of a young girl's courage, loveand survival during World War II and the infamous Nazi occupation ofHolland. It is a beautiful, heartbreaking autobiography that begins when Edith was thirteen (in 1938),and follows her when at sixteen when she went into hiding in Breda, and nineteen when Holland was liberated. Edith's Story is more than just another holocaust memoir. It is the deeply engaging, memorable, and moving story of a courageous Protestant family who took Edith in for three years as one of their own, and the of bravery and optimism in the face of pain, loss, and brutal occupation.
