Customer Reviews:
Informative & well-written.......2007-09-26
I bought this book for a class in Holistic Health Practices. It is well organized and well written. It is a little boring to read, because there are no illustrations or graphs. It gives a very good overview of all the alternative medical systems from acupuncture, ayurveda, chiropractic, osteopathy, homeopathy, etc., explaining how each system evolved, how it sees the patient and how it treats illnesses and which conditions it is good for. I highly recommend it if you are interested in taking charge of your health via alternative medicine or to supplement what western medicine can do for you.
My fave!.......2006-11-10
Out of five books, I chose this one on Holistic Health. Its scope just can't be matched. After checking it out from our enormous library in Fresno, I decided to buy it on Amazon for its constant reference value. I also decided to read it from cover to cover - not just hit and miss; otherwise, I might miss something.
Informative, Enjoyable Tome.......2005-10-27
This book is on my shelf next to Ultraprevention, another winner in the introductory holistic genre. Quite frankly, it's amazing how most of us have the power to transform our health to optimal levels, yet so many are too skeptical, or dare I say too lazy, to do the simple things needed...eat well, keep the mind clear, etc. The solution to the problem of disease does not always have to be complicated. Nutrition especially has the potential to be as potent as medication, without the side effects.
As someone who believes in the merit of holistic health, this book made perfect sense to me and was enjoyable as well as informative. I would imagine that those who are like-minded would critique this book similarly. To those who typically question the value of holistic medicine, keep an open mind and give this book (and the advice within) a genuine try.
American Holistic Association Guide & The Winkle Cure.......2005-09-05
These books were required reading in my Holistic practice. I found both these books very informative. I put to practice some information found in the Wrinkle Cure book and have been getting comments that I now look 40 when in actuallity I am 62. I have been able to pass this information onto some of my patients and they are trying it on themselves. The American Holistic Association Guide reinforced some of the teachings that I had just finished in getting my degree in the Holistic Method of healing. Both books were very interesting.
The best overview of holistic therapies I've ever read.......2003-05-02
I couldn't disagree more with the reviewer who called this book a rehash of Burton Goldberg's Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide (which I also highly recommend). Yes, the Guide is a wonderful book, and for that matter, Trivieri, the author of this book, also served as the editor and writer for the Guide. But to call his book a "rehash" couldn't be farther from the truth. I have read over a hundred books on the subject of holistic healing/alternative medicine, and never before have I read a book that so wonderfully explains the major therapies of holistic medicine and what it means to be healthy in "body, mind, and spirit," the way Trivieri's book does. The therapies he writes about here are covered in far more depth than in the Definitive Guide, and they are explained in a manner that makes them far more understandable and credible to readers who are unfamiliar with them. The chapter on Yoga alone was an eye opener for me. What I also like about this book are the many studies cited in support of each therapy, as well as the case histories that beautifully illustrate how effective they can be.
It also helps that each chapter contains the authoritative voice of a top expert in each modality.
I rate this book 5 stars because of its combination of comprehensive scholarship and understandability. By all means, buy it if you are at all interested in learning about proven alternatives to drugs and surgery that only treat symptoms, not the causes of dis-ease!

Customer Reviews:
Very Good coverage of a Classic Dish. Recommended.......2004-06-07
The author of `Pasta Salad', Barbara Lauterbach, is a culinary teacher and author of two other books on traditional salad types, `Potato Salad' and `Chicken Salad'.
This type of cookbook is always one of the easiest to add to one's collection, in that if you like the single subject of the book, you are virtually assured of making good use of the book, unlike a volume by the latest celebrity chef or latest exploration of the cuisine of a former Soviet republic.
There are three key aspects of the book which add to its attraction. First, almost all recipes are not only fairly simple, they virtually all follow the same pattern, just like gratins, braises, and chowders. Second, although there are a lot of similarities in method, the range of tastes is broad. While French and Italian flavors are the most common, there is a strong contingent of Asian, Greek, and Latin flavors and textures from the use of Oriental noodles like udon, soba, and rice noodles. Third, since the noodles, `supporting cast' of meats and vegetables, and the dressings are so interchangeable, improvisation can take you well beyond the nominal fifty recipes in the book.
The book begins with five master recipes for vinaigrette, mayonnaise, roasting peppers, blanching vegetables, and toasting nuts and seeds. If you have few cookbooks, these are important to have near at hand. I may have added a recipe for aioli, at least as a variation on mayonnaise.
There are four chapters on salad recipes. The first, largest, and most interesting is on the vegetable pasta salad. The very first recipe for a salad including squash shows the variety of this dish. Other favorite and unusual ingredients are mango, jicama, pears, and peaches. As you could tell from the master recipe on roasting peppers, this is one of the author's favorite ingredients. It appears in several different vegetable recipes. The second and shortest chapter adds meat, primarily chicken. I would not be surprised to see a little borrowing from an earlier book in this chapter. The third chapter of recipes covers seafood with all the usual suspects, lobster, shrimp, anchovies, crab, tuna, and salmon. The last chapter of recipes is a catchall of recipes `from family and friends'. It is altogether fitting that this chapter ends with a recipe for the great American `retro macaroni salad' with mayonnaise, onions, bell pepper, and celery.
The book has the contemporary `de rigeur' feature of cookbooks is a headnote which tells a story of how each recipe was developed, it's life outside this book, and how it was chosen for the book. Except for attributions of recipes to family and friends, there is no credit given to any other sources. With a pinch of skepticism, I will believe that the author developed most of the recipes. I was almost expecting to see my favorite `World's Best' pasta salad recipe done by Jamie Oliver, but these are all just as good.
There are a few blemishes that are as much a weakness of the publisher's copy editor as of the author. One is the flip side of my pet peeve where it is said that salt must melt into the liquid of vinaigrette before adding the oil. For all the times the word `dissolve' is misused, here is a case where it is missing and it should have been used. Another blemish is an inconsistency in the amount of water specified for cooking pasta in the text and in a table. None of these are serious. I just hope that pointing them out will encourage book publishers to be more vigilant in future volumes.
Subjects the author may wish to consider in a second edition of this book are discussions of whole wheat noodles, the impact on a carb sensitive diet from these recipes, and a bit more discussion of mayonnaise and safe storage. I do give the author very high marks for notes on the `shelf life' of the recipes. That is, which should be served cold, which should be served warm, which can be refrigerated and for how long, and which should be served immediately. You don't always get this stuff in your Wednesday newspaper culinary supplement.
Highly recommended if you make pasta salads. Slightly pricy for fifty recipes, but the chances that you will use a large number of the recipes is very, very good. Easy for all skills and ages!
Pasta Greats.......2004-05-18
Barbara has done it again! Something for everyone. As
in her last 2 books (50 Potato Salads and 50 Chicken salads)she begins with her always helpful "Basics" and "Master Recipes" which even if you "know everything" are a great easy to read review and if not will certainly enhance your knowledge. From there it's great fun with a refreshinghly creative compilation of favorite new pasta greats. The photos by Reed Davis are delicious. Just can't count carbs at this level!!
Know your pasta.......2004-05-08
Whether you are a great cook or a family-pleasing cook, looking for something "different" to serve, do pick up the "Pasta Salad" cookbook by Barbara Lauterbach. She makes it so easy, by giving you a list of 22 different kinds of pasta, how to measure them and mix them with vegetables, meat, poultry and fish. There are many delicious and different dressings that complement the salads. You will love the salads offered by her family and friends, and delightful stories about each. This is a unique touch you will find in all of Barbara's books. This is a must, to add to your favorite recipes, or send to a friend you want to impress.

birds love these.......2000-03-14
I bought this for my husband 2 years ago and he has made all the large feeders. He really enjoyed building them and I enjoy showing them off. I'm currently looking for another book with different designs but so far this is the best one.
Birdfeeders Shelters & Baths.......1999-11-25
An excellent book that illustrates how to make some very nice birdhouses that vary from the easy to the complex like the one on the cover. I'm building the one on the cover and am having a lot of fun! The best birdfeeder book I've seen so far.

Book Description
While standing in the checkout line at one of the nation's largest discount stores, author Doug Peine observed the antics of a toddler defying his exasperated mother by refusing to put back a candy bar and throwing an all-out temper tantrum. It is a scene played out in stores and homes all across America every day: children manipulating their parents who haplessly try to fix the behavioral problems with misguided attempts at discipline culled from an endless parade of "experts." In this simple yet eloquent book, Peine shows readers that, in spite of the vast wealth of knowledge on childrearing and child psychology, parents are more confused than ever because much of the material is too complicated and often contradictory.
A parent himself, Peine provides two simple truths: 1) there is at work among those who parent well, a fundamental common sense; and 2) this common sense can be briefly stated and readily grasped by anyone. He has most readily observed these truths while waiting in line, where mini dramas in the parent-child struggle are often played out. The same obvious parenting mistakes occur as sure as the moon follows the sun. In
It's Not that Complicated readers will learn twelve easy-to-follow rules that just might make their jobs easier. They include: mean what you say; do not force your child to make decisions; and read to your child every night before bed. These are simple truths that we usually forget.
All parents want the same things: for their kids to be happy, disciplined and compassionate toward and respectful of others. Busy, stressed-out parents will find solace in the simplicity of this book and learn that the most effective way to deal with their children is often in their own hearts.

A MUST READ for any parent-.......2002-09-24
I received this book as a gift from my parents during a time when I was struggling with my almost 4 year old daughter. She was behaving so out of character, whining and throwing tantrums. I sent my mom an email saying "Please Help Me" and was answered with my dad sending this book that is already changing our lives. It points out the obvious - the "you can't see the forest for the trees" type things. It reinforces the things that you do right, what you do wrong, and that everyone makes the same mistakes but just try harder- and it's not that complicated! There are only 12 rules to follow, and 3 lessons to teach - It's an afternoon easy read, and worth a million times what you'll pay for it.

Book Description
More than a method or exercise book, this guide challenges jazz guitarists to increase originality in their thinking and playing. Master player Larry Coryell takes readers deep inside the music to make connections between ideas and the guitar fretboard, helping them unlock their own creativity. This book/CD set builds logically from basic ideas to more advanced techniques, which Coryell explains in fine detail. He highlights musical ways to understand complex jazz concepts and presents his unique approach to improvisation by providing exciting new ways to play scales, intervals, arpeggios, melody and chords. Emphasizing group interaction and solos that sizzle, Coryell taps his decades of experience as a performer to offer insights into inventive, powerful ensemble playing. "This book should open the door to a better understanding in our quest for advanced guitar playing." - Al DiMeola
Customer Reviews:
Work of Art.......2006-07-04
This book starts out with relatively easy 4th's and 5th's exercises to get you accustomed to some of the intervals Larry uses in his work. For exercises they sound amazingly good. It then progresses to a step by step analysis of one of his more chordally involved pieces which will take you a while to fully absorb due to the complexity. I'd recommend a very patient approach and playing the CD while following along with the music to thoroughly know the piece before attempting to play it. From there it moves on to another interesting piece employing 'Turkish Finger style' technique. I could explain the whole book but in a nutshell what this book is is a way to experience a shot of Larry's guitar(music) trancendance. It's not easy. In fact it's quite difficult because there's nothing easy about his approach to the instrument. Somehow he consistently manages a greater than the sum of the parts result which is the true measure of a music genius regardless of musical category. This book might not be for everyone but for me, it was a work of art.
Contemporary Master.......2005-04-09
This book is intended to the intermediate to advanced player.Reading the text and playing the scores will put you on a new dimension of jazz music.
A straightforward "how-to" instructional guide.......2002-01-14
Larry Coryell's Power Jazz Guitar: Extending Your Creative Reach is a straightforward "how-to" instructional guide strongly recommended for anyone seeking to learn the rhythm and joy of playing true jazz guitar music. Chapters include musical scores, descriptions of the music's moods and nuances, instructions on using special finger styles, and much more. An accompanying CD contains the lively jazz scores and lessons to better demonstrate and perform the music! If you aspire to proficiency on the jazz guitar, begin with a careful reading of Larry Coryell's Power Jazz Guitar, and practice along with the lessons on the "user friendly" Larry Coryell's Power Jazz Guitar compact disk.

Book Description
This is the story of a unique and crucial chapter of Jewish history that has until now been kept in the closet. This book is an attempt to shed light on Peter Bergson as a man of courage and vision who stood against the tide of passivity at the most desperate moment in Jewish history in two thousand years.

A tribute to an unsung hero.......2000-05-18
The holocaust was a historical event beyond comprehension, not only because it was the largest planned genocide in recorded history. After reading the historical studies dealing with the holocaust, one must arrive at a very disturbing, pessimistic, and hopeless conclusion about humanity: If the whole world actively participated with the Nazis in the execution of the "final solution" for the Jews, the Nazis could not have done a better jon than what they did. The main event that stopped the extermination of the Jews was the military victory over Germany and its allies (Hungary, Rumania, etc). But this was a byproduct of the war, not a mission. With few exceptions (one such exception is the topic of SHAKE HEAVEN AND HELL), Great Britain, the United States, and the Soviet Union not only refused to consider any plan to save the doomed Jews, but they did their best to hinder efforts of rescue. This included not only the leaders of the Allies during the war such as Franklin Roosevelt and the State Department, Winston Churchill and the Foreign Office, and the Soviet leaders, but also most of the Zionist-socialist Jewish leaders in the U.S. such as Stephen wise and Nahum Goldman. Louis Rapoport made a major contribution in SHAKE HEAVEN AND HELL, which is a tribute to an unsung hero, Hiller Kook (alias Peter Bergson). With a small band of young Palestinian Jews (loosely affiliated with the Irgun) Bergson managed to enlist the support of wide segments of the American public to put pressure on Roosevelt to do something about the Nazi massacres. This included congressmen, senators, various organizations, writers, and others. Some of the above individuals were household names in the 1940's such as Ben Hecht, Guy Gillette, Randolph Hearst, LaGuardia, Herbert Hoover, and Will Rogers Jr. Their public relations campaigns finally pair off in early 1944 (too little, too late) with the creation of the War Refugee Board which has been credited with the saving of approximately 200,000 Jews from the German ovens. Much of the above activities of Bergson and his group have been described in several books, such as David Wyman's THE ABANDONMENT OF THE JEWS, and in David Morrison's HEROES, UNTIHEROES AND THE HOLOCAUST. The unique contribution of Rapoport is that SHAKE HEAVEN AND HELL presents a chronological account of Peter Bergson activities, and the humiliations that he and his friends had to endure, mainly from the "recognized" Jewish leaders of the time such as Stephen Wise, Nahum Goldman, and Abba Silver. These individuals, in cohorts with Chaim Weizmann, Ben Gurion, Moshe shertok and other fanatical labor Zionists did everything they could to discredit Bergson and his activities due to their timidity and ghetto mentality. During the darkest period in human history, when most of the world collaborated in the torture and murder of six million innocent people, Peter Bergson and those who helped him should stand out as reminders that leaders and governments are not to be trusted. Unfortunately, this has not happened yet, and Rapoport laments on the overwhelming acceptance of Roosevelt, Wise, Weizmann, and others as historical heroes, while the historical research has shown that they were Nazi collaborators. We can add to this list Ben Gurion, shertok, Golda Meyerson, and their heirs. It is disheartening that despite more than half a century of major revelations about the holocaust, such as the Kastner Affair in the l950's (see Ben Hecht's PERFIDY), Eichmann's trial in 1960, and numerous books exposing the labor Zionists and their supporters' shameful betrayal of the European Jews, they are still considered as respected leaders. Roosevelt has been worshiped as a God, and Ben Gurion's heirs have been elected as leaders of Israel for almost 40 years, leading this country to one disaster after another. The six million murdered Jews did not simply end up as fertilizers in German fields. they are ghosts who will exact their revenge on man, as long as he persists in worshipping leaders and governments who have always turned against him in times of need.
