Book Description
Matthew B. Ridgway was a significant figure in United States history. He commanded the 82nd Airborne Division in the invasion in Europe; he succeeded MacArthur in Korea; he was the U.S. delegate to the United Nations; he served as Supreme Commander of the Far East and Supreme Commander in Europe. He was counselor to four presidents, helped found a university research center on national security, and was a powerful influence in national affairs for 40 years. Using Ridgway's personal papers, George Mitchell offers a unique and compelling view of this authentic American hero.

Decent review of a great soldier's life.......2007-07-12
I have to respectfully disagree with the previous reviewer's take on this book. While the book is choppy at times in the way that it is formatted, it is still a very good biography.
The previous reviewer stated that it was disappointing because it did not compare to Carlo D'Este's biography of George Patton ( A Genius for War). However I do not feel that this is a fair comparison. How many military biographies can compare to this classic?
I think that this book should be judged on its merits and in my opinion; the author does a good job of telling the life story of this great American General.
Each chapter is dedicated to a certain section of Ridgeway's life; Korea, Joint Chiefs of Staff, etc and while at times this does make the book seem choppy, it still is a pretty good book if you want to learn about Matthew Ridgeway.
One last note about the book, to his credit the author George C. Mitchell does manage to accomplish something very important when writing a biography. It left me wanting to know more about the subject and read more about Ridgeway's life.
I definitely recommend it if you are looking for a good introduction into Ridgeway's career and life.
Well written but limited.......2006-01-06
First of all I can say that I am a great admirer of Matt Ridgeway. The book is overall exceptional well written but lacks the personal sense that Carlo D'Este put into Patton: Genius for War. It seemed that the author has a title for each chapter then expanded this based on topic. A chronological order to Ridgeway's history would have made the book more substantial.

British-born Jonathan Raban sets out on a passage from Seattle to Juneau in a small boat that is more a waterborne writing den, and as usual with the brilliant Raban, this journey becomes a vehicle for history and heart-stopping descriptions that will make readers want to hail him as one of the finest talents who's picked up a pen in the 20th century. The voyage through the Inside Passage from Washington's Puget Sound to Alaska churns up memories and stirs up hidden emotions and Raban dwells on many, including the death of his father and his own role of Daddy to his young daughter, Julia, left behind in Seattle. More than just a personal travelogue, however, Passage to Juneau deftly weaves in the stories of others before him--from Indians whom white men formerly greeted with baubles set afloat on logs, to Captain Vancouver, who risked mutiny on his ship when he banned visits with prostitutes, some of whom offered their services for bits of scrap metal. Pressed into every page are intimate descriptions of life at sea--the fog-shrouded coasts, the crackly radio that keeps him linked to the mainland, the salty marine air, and the fellow sailors who are likewise drawn by a life of tossing on water. While Raban successfully steers his boat to the desired port, readers ultimately discover that this insightful, talented sage is in fact emotionally in deep water and may not fully be captain of his own life. --Melissa Rossi
Book Description
With the same rigorous observation (natural and social), invigorating stylishness, and encyclopedic learning that he brought to his National Book Award-winning
Bad Land, Jonathan Raban conducts readers along the Inside Passage from Seattle to Juneau. The physical distance is 1,000 miles of difficult-and often treacherous-water, which Raban navigates solo in a 35-foot sailboat.
But
Passage to Juneau also traverses a gulf of centuries and cultures: the immeasurable divide between the Northwest's Indians and its first European explorers-- between its embattled fishermen and loggers and its pampered new class. Along the way, Raban offers captivating discourses on art, philosophy, and navigation and an unsparing narrative of personal loss.
Customer Reviews:
My book of the year.......2007-08-29
Raban deftly weaves George Vancouver's expedition with his own journey up North America's West Coast two centuries later.
Introspective and heartfelt, the book is in parts auto-biography, travel-guide and biography. As a Passage to Juneau unwinds, Raban describes situations and others with great perception, yet is never afraid to expose his own frailties.
Passage to Juneau is beautifully written and explores Raban's thoughts every bit as much as the miles of water he covers. A tremendous book and fully deserving of the great praise it has received.
Much Better Than Earlier Raban Book.......2007-05-07
I tend to ignore author Raban's political diatribes (most of his writing, unfortunately) and revel in the beauty of his books about his personal boat journeys. I had earlier read "Old Glory: A Voyage Down The Mississippi" and felt that it lost focus about halfway through the narrative. That book seemed to reflect the desperate lack of focus and national malaise that the Carter administration brought on in the late 70's, and "Old Glory" would not be a Raban book I'd recommend.
However, Passage to Juneau is different. His solo journey by sailboat from Seattle to Juneau in the late 1990s is beautifully written with haunting scenes of his personal life interspersed with his musings on the sea. During the journey, his father dies and his wife demands a separation, the first personal tragedy giving Raban insight into his personal feelings about life and the sea, the second (at the midpoint of his journey, reaching Juneau) causing him to focus inward for the return trip to Seattle.
Despite his occasional lapses towards anti-americanism (throughout the book I kept wondering why he didn't move back to England or at least move north to British Columbia), Passage to Juneau is an intimate portrait of a man who is facing life's trials and the vagaries of some of the more treacherous seas in the world at the same time.
the inside passage.......2007-04-03
I've read many of Mr Raban's books and loved them all but this is my favorite. This isn't just a "travel" book, it's the history of the beautiful Inside Passage. You really feel like you are on Mr Raban's boat as he travels from Seattle, where he lives, to Juneau. He recounts the history of all the travellers who went before him - how certain Sounds and Inlets got their names - tells you about the people he meets - the things he sees - and shares a little piece of his own life history as he travels. During this journey he deals with the death of his Father and his upcoming divorce from his wife. He is a master storyteller. I live on the Puget Sound and have scuba dived up and down this Passage - this book brings the whole area to life. If you haven't enjoyed Mr Raban's prose before now, start here. You'll be hooked.
A Rougher Sea.......2007-01-09
Let me see if I can write a review that does justice to this book and at the same time explain to myself why it is such a great piece of literature.
I think the first point to make is that the writing mirrors the, by turns, eddying, chaotic, reflective quality of the sea itself, leading one deeper and deeper into the author's own meandering introspections about life and, yes, water in a very (to this reader anyway) seductive style, a style which is nothing if not allusive, reflecting Raban's own lifelong fascination with and profound love of literature. The account of Captain Vancouver's voyage along this same passage, taken from many sources, while certainly the most superficially parallel and certainly the most discursively ongoing of the allusions, is not in the end, the most significant and profound. That award must surely go to Raban's recounting of Shelley's last days and ultimate demise in the chapter entitled "Charred Remains", striking a parallel, in a much more profound manner than those accounts of Vancouver's voyage, to the last days and death of Raban's father and to the unsurpassed final chapter in which he invokes Cowper's "The Cast-Away" as a metaphor for his crumbling marriage and his own mortality.
Perhaps one, like Raban, has to already have a love of and familiarity both these poets to see what a feat he has pulled of here - though Raban provides the basic biographical background for each. To stick with the last chapter---Cowper isn't a poet much read anymore. But he's always been one of my favourites. One really has to be familiar with his intensely unbalanced life and mind to fully appreciate his poetry. In any event, by this last chapter of the book, we know what it's like to walk in Raban's shoes, to be in his boat, to wander through his mind and heart and to know how much he loves his family. When the hammer falls at the end with his wife and daughter deplaning in Juneau, we feel how crushed he is by it. And Cowper's "The Cast-Away" is the perfect poetic expression of the way we feel he feels, drowned not by the "real" sea he's been traversing, but by Cowper's metaphoric sea of despair. I frequently return to Cowper's "The Task"-A poem given him as a sort of assignment to ward off one of his mental fits-as well as "The Cast-Away" as two of the greatest poems in the language. I NEVER thought I'd see a modern author apparently effortlessly bring the despair of the all but forgotten poet back to life, but......Raban does.
So, yes, readers looking for a "sea adventure" yarn had better look elsewhere. How to know if you will fancy the book? Do you love history, English literature, introspective depths? Above all, do you know the feeling of being drowned by despair? Can you relate to Cowper's couplet?
"But I, beneath a rougher sea,
And whelm'd in deeper gulfs than he."
In short, do you know that INNER Sea? If so, this book will not disappoint.
Drifting, not sailing.......2006-04-26
The author fails miserable to hold together the historical journey of Vancouver, his current plodding through the inside passage, and his personal family life. Drifting from one to the other I dreaded learning more of this egomaniacs personal life! If the 430 pages had been edited down to 100 dealing with the history of the area, told as he travels through it, it might be a winner. But alas it's not.

Reading required for parents or parents to-be........2006-02-06
This book can help save a life. As his son, I attest Dr. Berlinger explains depression in frank terms that both professionals and parents can understand and follow. Any parent who wishes to get a better grasp on their child's symptoms will be directed towards reality. I am living proof that this book works.
a must for parents with depressed teens.......2005-09-29
For any parent who thinks or knows their child has depression, there is no better source of information than this book. We found our son described on nearly every page. It helped us to understand the problem. More importantly, it helped us to learn how to help him. Reading this book makes me want to devote the rest of my life to helping parents in this situation.
Customer Reviews:
Not as authentic as expected........2007-02-08
Simple recipes, yes. Although there's ketchup (?!) in the pad thai recipe. 'Nuff said.
Perfect intro to Thai if you've decided to tackle it.......2000-01-09
Can't be beat. gets right to the point. Preparation is easy: what an Asian housewife would do after work, so you can forget about the five pots and the special tool for peeling bamboo shoots. And what I love best: the recipes WORK. They come out just right, they taste like a Thai restaurant and they don't seem to have come from Woman's Day. The spring rolls are AWESOME. The green curry with shrimp caused people to keep talking about it to me two years later. Not fussy.
This is a GREAT Thai cookbook, very authentic........1998-11-12
My wife took classes from the author. She has taught many of the Thai chefs in Seattle. This is not the only Thai cookbook we own but it is the best. I love the Phad Thai, curry chicken and the coconut milk chicken soup (Tom Ka Gai). It has lots of other great recipes.

Customer Reviews:
Easily the best origami book out there........2003-09-12
This is easily my favorite book on origami. All the diagrams are clear, the models are very detailed, and more importantly, all of them are an awful lot of fun to make, and very rewarding. While it has models from the whole range of difficulty levels, it focuses primarily on the advanced folder.
A little bit of history- my parents bought me this book about 15 years ago, I couldn't have been more than 8 at the time. I had dabbled a little bit in origami before then, but this is the book that got me hooked. I still have that copy, ragged at the edges, pages falling out, but still as fulfulling as it always was. I just can't stop singing the praises of this book- it's that good.
The Ultimate!.......2001-09-30
I Remember When I Got The 3 Final Steps On The Lobster. I Got so Into Origami That I Started Making Lobsters, Crabs And Cranes During School! I Have Loved Origami ever Since I Was 9 Years Old. This Book Was A Little Easy For Me, But For People That Can Only Make Cranes, Tigers, Paper Cups and other Easy Things. This Book is A Little Over Your Head.
Animal Origami for the Enthusiast.......2001-04-07
This is a great book, not quite for beginners, though. In this book, you work your way up through the angel fish (easiest) to the lobster (hardest). The book has great step-by-step intructions which helps you create a model with great detail. This is one of the best origami books I've ever gotten and I definatly recommend it if you're really into origami.
One of the best Montroll books.......2000-12-27
If you want some wonderful challenging and detailed animal origami to fold, you won't be disappointed with this book! It has quite a few of my favorite models. All the ones pictured on the cover are great...I particularly like the wonderful detail on the frog, with eyes and toes. The lobster is another personal favorite of mine.
Great looking models.......1999-06-24
In 1985 I bought this at a book fair when I was 5 years old, and I still think that it is one of the best books on origami out there. The version that I have contains a few confusing instructions (which may have been corrected in later editions), but they can be worked around thanks to the well drawn pictures.
Book Description
Twenty-five original paper animal creations offer strong challenges to origamists seeking advanced projects. Well-known origamist Montroll shows how to fold fish, ostrich, peacock, squirrel, rhinoceros, Pegasus, and 19 other intricate subjects. Complete instructions. Diagrams.
Customer Reviews:
What a treat!.......2006-06-20
I still vividly recall the delight I found when a friend got this book for me. It was introduced with the notion that, since there were many more beginners than advanced folders, most of the books were for beginners, but NOT THIS ONE. Aha! At last! And it was true - some of the models are fairly straight-forward, but others are still challenging. And, to the best of my knowledge, this is the only origami vulture in existence - it looks so great on a Christmas tree!
I've since had the pleasure of meeting John and folding many of his newer creations, but I still hold this book in high esteem because it was The First.
one of my best books.......2002-11-17
I was 14 when I bought this origami book and Iwas simply astonished with the variety and the complexity of the animals(well some of them)
but now iIam much more experient than other days and noticed that this is only an "average"complex book.
there are some jewels on this book and also some weird models
the elephant is my all-time favorite model, and the insects(except the bbeetle)are amazing
but geting back to the bad parts .. the pegasus looks like a winged dog,I think the rhino's head is very strange, the whale is very stylized and it's impressive how every toucan that john montroll designs don't look like a real one
but afterall this is a cool book if you are tired of those simple models they teach on TV
A Well-Rounded Offering of Origami.......2001-02-10
This was one of the first origami books I purchased, it has a very wide range of designs, with a great section in the beginning outlining the basic folds. The animals are cute, and there's always more difficult ones as you progress! Recommended!
One of the first, and best books, by John Montroll.......2000-09-22
John Montroll is considered on of the premier folders of animal origami, certainly in the US, if not the world. I actually had the pleasure of folding some of his models he was still working on for one of his books, when a member of the local origami club. His newer books certainly have cleaner, crisper diagrams, but this book has a lot of my favorite models, and is still well worth the cost. I've always loved the Pegasus, the grasshopper and other insects, various birds, elephant, etc. Don't miss getting this classic origami book!
Dated Book, find another.......2000-04-28
This book is pretty old, you can tell because it has drawn diagrams instead of computer designed ones. Almost all of the models have been made better in Montroll's other books, like the Sea Life book, and the Birds in Origami book. If you want a book that has all sorts of models, get this one. Otherwise, get one of the newer books

Book Description
Since he was anointed in the late 1970s as the future of rock and roll and appeared on the covers of both Time and Newsweek, Springsteen has redefined the image of the rock star as not simply an entertainer but a man whom millions of fiercely loyal fans look to as a voice for their own fears and desires.
Customer Reviews:
A fan's love letter.......2006-09-15
This is certainly not the definitive Bruce bio- nor does it pretend to be. All one has to do is read the introduction and get that all this book pretends to be is "something to say". In some ways, that's a lot like Bruce.
As this is a fan letter, it's obviously pro- pro- Bruce. It tends to gloss over some of the more disappointing aspects of his life and career. But, then again, most people who actually read the book are in that camp. You can pretty much ignore the one star reviews for that reason. In addition, the author makes it pretty clear what his favorite albums are, and even if you are a hard-core Bruce fan, you may disagree.
I think this is worth a read, then if you are really interested in Bruce one should read other accounts of him to get a broader perspective.
Great little book about Bruce.......2005-05-24
This book is not THE Bruce bio but a rather personal view at the songs and the impact Bruce has had on many of us who grew up with him. Some fans will not find that much truly new here but may appreciate the overview and the description of how Altermans own relationship with the songs.
Great little book
A good introduction.......2005-03-28
This book serves as a good introduction to learning about Bruce Springsteen and his music, his band, and career. But it is by no means a great literary masterpiece. In fact, it is not literary, at all. What it is is a good way to learn about Bruce. However, I have found the best way to learn about Bruce is to listen to his interviews, watch his concerts, listen to his albums, read articles in unbiased magazines, and read his lyrics. Bruce is not an intellectual on par with some of the great minds of today, whoever they are, but he does have something to say and he tends to do it well. His meat and potatoes are in his live performances. That is where you'll find the real Bruce Springsteen. When on stage and behind a telecaster, he is simply unbeatable, even at age 54.
Alterman does a good job of laying the basics down. That is about it. One has to be care when reading about Springsteen because people either love him or they don't get it and then they try to tear him down. Most people who don't like Bruce and write about him are simply too negative and their lack of understanding what he is all about becomes evident. Also, writers who knock Springsteen usually have an axe to grind about some other issue, such as Springsteen replacing Dylan or some other crap that doesn't matter. Saying things like "fans ought to get a life," is a good example of that. People who really like Bruce, like Alterman, tend to soft pedal the questionable aspects of his career, and their worship of him comes through like glossy paint.
I'm still waiting for the definitive biography of Bruce Springsteen, this is not it.
Absorbing tribute-bio.......2004-10-03
Half biography, half love letter, Eric Alterman's dissection of the impact of Bruce Springsteen on america is well informed, expertly reported, and in a way that you don't see coming, completely gripping and emotional. The tale he tells of being kicked out of a car while sick for wanting to see a local Springsteen concert on Yom Kippur is priceless, and this book is full of moments like that which fuse respect and biography until they're inextricable. It makes the argument that an artist's life, no matter how interesting (and I find Springsteen's fascinating), is just there to serve the listener's passion for his work. I wouldn't recomment it for non-Springsteen fans like some reviewers here (why'd they even go past page 10?), but if you've found yourself drawn into the promise and messages of a certain artist, you'll find emotions to bury yourself in here.
Born To Bow.......2004-03-19
Eric Alterman and Bruce have one thing in common. They both worship the ground Bruce walks on. Eric, and fans like him, that bow at the altar of Bruce need to get a life. The idea that Bruce or Eric have a "cultural impact" is just nonsense. Bruce is a talented songwriter and performer and it pretty much ends right there. Making him the focal point of ones life will rob you of time. If Bruce has a message in his songs it's about movement in life and growing up so why can't fans just take the advice he offers and let it rest already.
