A Youth at War.......2001-06-11
As a fan of Confederate General Daniel Harvey Hill I was very happy to discover this slim little volume by his aide, Major James Ratchford. In addition to staff duty with D.H.Hill, Ratchford served as adjutant to John Bell Hood and Stephen Lee and witnessed over thirty engagements from Bethel to Bentonville including the disastrous Franklin-Nashville battles. This little book lets the reader see the war (and a number of its senior participants) through the eyes of a young man who may have preferred cordial young ladies and fine fishing to the battlefield. See also Hal Bridges' bio of D.H.Hill - LEE'S MAVERICK GENERAL.

Delve into new ground within the realm of pscyhology.......2002-05-01
As a Master's candidate studying psychology, I am thrilled to have stumbled upon this book! Finally, some of the "darker" areas of the field have been illuminated by a first-hand expert.
Written in a conversational tone, this book is safely navigated by the jargon-wary among us, and is entertaining as well as educational. Pick this one up if you have an interest in the fringe movements in psychology, have an open-minded approach to what is considered therapeutic, and/or simply are intrigued by the spiritually enhancing capabilities of psychedelic drugs.
Mind expanding and soul healing.......2001-09-05
Let me try this again. The Secret Chief is a fantastically written, conversational and often warm and humorous overview of a real pioneer in the field of psychology. Few researchers or clinicians are willing to boldly sidestep well-known but mostly unfounded restrictions on their practice.
The hero of this story is a man that truly put his clients/patients first and upheld their well being as the foremost goal. From his uncanny ability to listen to what they were saying to his courage and wisdom in guiding them along the path toward recovery and growth, the reader is brought in to delightfully pick up on the knowledge gained.
Operating not just from a medical expert perspective but from a caring human being equally engaged in the challenge of life, the therapist intuitively, assertively spurs the client onto self discovery and mind expansion. Tools of the psychological trade vary. The respective benefits of varying methods of therapy are discussed, and the trail blazing of supposed "radical" "innovative" methods occurs. That they have ever been explored is impressive. That there is a definite need to continue research and practice in this field is made resoundingly evident within the pages of this remarkable, insightful book.
Highly recommended.
Brian Wallace, author, Labyrinth of Chaos
Makes a trilogy with 'Acid Dreams' and 'Storming Heaven'.......2001-05-26
This book reveals some of the true promise of psychedelic therapy that is obscured in other popular histories of the era that focus on the (albeit fascinating) aftermath of Dr. Leary et. al. ('Acid Dreams' and 'Storming Heaven').
The most valuable aspect of the book, and its main focus, is an oral walkthrough of a session with the therapist Jacob. Mr. Stolaroff has done a valuable service in preserving Jacob's insights into what works and what doesnt work.
Though, I was confused when Jacob described his purely religious orientation to the therapy yet didnt elaborate hardly at all on his own 'theological' outlook or experiences.
Also, in my opinion, Jacob goes to an extreme in asserting at one point that transformation *requires* such entheogens. He seems to unfairly discount the traditional religious retreat practices and experiences.
Personally, I side with the theory that such entheogens merely unveil latent faculties that can be cultivated by traditional retreat type practices without the need for entheogens at all.
Also, one danger, perhaps, in the outlook and process described in this book, is its almost complete lack of orientation to 'Right View' (in the Buddhist sense) as the precursor to 'awakening'. The Buddha stressed that insight into Right View was a key prerequisite. Yet, this therapy seems to presume it is largely irrelevant.
I would recommend Thaddeus Golas' 'The Lazy Man's Guide to Enlightenment' as a complement to this book, as Golas himself broke through via entheogens, yet does not see them as absolutely necessary, and focuses on orienting to 'Right View' first as the means to awaken (his book is out of print, but available online now, search for the title in google).
A magical mystery tour of the mind.......2000-12-06
This book points to the possibility of remembering the parts of ourselves we forgot long ago. It's a poem to the forgotten realms of being human and declares the potential to reclaim ones totality. For someone thinking of using psychedelics, there are instructions here for their proper use. For someone who has already used them, there are footnotes from infinitude. This book, and this subject will change you. No longer will you be stained by the propaganda of the drug war. The sacrements of freedom exist. Whether they be psychedelics, meditation, yoga or dreaming. A friendly, helpful voice speaks out to you from the pages of this book. You will be better for listening. Be careful, this is not recreation. This is you, that you are exploring. Have some respect.
A good read, practical ideas.......1999-11-28
People like Jacob give us "permission to hope" and inspiration to create a better future. This short book can provide ideas about how we can participate.

Excellent Information On Sleep -And It's Not Just For Women!.......2004-07-17
"Even if you do think you're getting the amount of sleep you should, you may wonder why you feel so tired and unrefreshed much of the time. This is not surprising. More than half the women surveyed in a recent National Sleep Foundation Women and Sleep Poll reported insomnia symptoms sometime during every month. Various studies and polls indicate that nearly 30 million American women claim they long every day for a good night's sleep." -Janet Kinosian, in The Well-Rested Woman - 60 Soothing Suggestions for Getting a Good Night's Sleep
For many women, a good night's sleep is a luxury. However, restful and deep sleep is an innate biological need. It's only in the deeper stages of sleep that the body releases growth hormones and regenerates, restores, and repairs organs and tissues.
With the demands of modern life, women often juggle work, family, and household-and are just plain exhausted. Beyond not getting enough shut-eye, there are very real sleep disorders that rob individuals of precious, rejuvenating sleep. Surprisingly, it was only until 1996 that the American Medical Association recognized sleep medicine as a secondary specialty. The real kicker is that until the early 1990's, women were often excluded from sleep studies because it was believed that their hormones would skew data. The result? Women don't have a whole lot of scientific history for help with sleep difficulties.
The good news is much of this is changing, with sleep researchers finally studying women's sleep cycles, as well as factors such as hormones, age, fertility, work, children, health, pain, etc.
The Well-Rested Woman - 60 Soothing Suggestions for Getting a Good Night's Sleep, author Janet Kinosian shares what she has learned about sleep-not as a medical doctor or a Ph.D., but as a female insomniac.
While Kinosian briefly discusses the stages of sleep and sleep disorders, as well as female-related issues like perimenopause, menopause, postpartum, and PMS, the bulk of this book is dedicated to practical ways to promote a good night's rest. And except for the first 30 pages, these welcome remedies are just as applicable to men.
This 212 page book is filled with tips on creating the right environment for sleep, de-stressing the mind, fine-tuning the body, soothing the soul, sleep hazards and more. Also included are an extensive resource section, listing books, music, organizations, and websites to help you on the journey to restful sleep.
Some of the great ideas you'll get from The Well Rested Woman:
*Accept Larks Versus Owls
*Keep A Sleep Log
*Know Your Sleep Positions
*Set Regular Wake-Up Calls
*Befriend Time
*Use Phototherapy
*Sleep Strategies For Shift Workers
*Silence Snoring Spouses
I'm the type of person that is not only a night owl, but also one that doesn't battle insomnia. (And for that, I am grateful.) Yet, I found a wealth of wonderfully simple ways that I can enhance my sleep, and feel more rested. Fellow insomniacs will bless Kinosian for sharing the results of her 15 year search for a good night's sleep, and those of us who are just plain busy and tired will benefit from the practical insights. A final note: this book isn't just for women! Men will also benefit from Kinosian's sage advice.
a well-worth read.......2004-01-03
I just got this book, The Well-Rested Woman, for xmas and have finished it with a hopeful attitude. I'm certainly an un-well-rested woman and I found Janet Kinosian's efforts to be top-notch and excellent. I've read many books on insomnia to help with a chronic poor sleep life and this is the first to address me as a women from a woman's voice and point of view. She's obviously been there.
I haven't seen her chapters listed here so I suggest you take a look at the them - Creating the Right Environment[mattresses to feng shui]; Destressing the Mind [worry books, journals to sleep biographies]; Fine-Tuning the Body [hot baths to herbs and sleep positions]; Soothing the Soul [anger management; nightmares etc. MY FAV CHAP; Sleep Hazards [no-nos like sleeping pills and food allergies] and chps on accupunture, hypnosis, biofeedback and chiropractic.
Yep, she covers all the bases in a delightful read. Can't wait to get started on my first 6 suggestions. A useful Christmas present this year.
women need rest! in Australia.......2003-12-28
If you're a chronically under-rested and understlept woman, this is your book. I was given it by my mother, and it's been a godsend. It discusses just about every and anything that has to do with women, sleep, insomnia, and how to go about improving your sleep AND your life. Hormones, medications, herbs, alternative medicine, sleep diaries, exercise, foods, allergies, even fung shei and sleep positions are explained. Wonderful job. Very well written and a pleasure to read. It's got all the science you need but without question it's written by a (smart) woman and not an MD. The best book I've read on the subject and I've read far too many.
want to share some slumber.......2003-12-09
I was recommended this little book by my physician and it has helped me learn how to get rid of all the bad habits I've developed that keep me from getting the good night's sleep-- the kind I used to have as a teenager. I've learned with this book, not only some unique and great anti-stress techniques, but also nutrition, good healthful sleep habits, and what hormones have to do with it all. A wonderful book to cure insomnia - or any type of sleep problem you may have as a woman. It's clear this lady has a hopeful, healthy life and perspective. A great read, too.

Basic training of prospective owners of today's dogs........1998-12-27
This book is a very well written "primer" for those folks considering an addition to their lives, of the "doggy" kind. Doctor Becker takes the reader from choosing a dog, to the 'how to' areas of common sense. Written in simple, easy to read text, all levels of readers will benefit. Doctor Becker reinforces basic training techniques and disspells old myths. Worth the money.
This is one very talented author.......1998-10-08
Hoping that this is the man also known as Marty Becker, DVM.... I have not yet read Dr. Becker's new book but not for long, because I'm ordering it) but I want those of you who are not familiar with his work know that he is a very talented author. He writes article for many veterinary magazines on numerous subjects related to the field and I look forward to each new article. He is innovative and has a great sense of humor. Dr. Beckeris one of those people who we look up to and say "Man, how can anyone be so talented?" He is also a motivating speaker/lecturer and is very personable. This book should be no exception from what I have seen from Dr. Becker in the past.

Book Description
Parents of teenagers in mid to late high school will appreciate this resource as they wade through myriad details concerning college applications, financial aid applications and admissions procedures. Tom Shaw, as a parent of collegebound teens, and as a seasoned educator and Christian college administrator, helps anxious or simply interested parents guide their teens to making the best choice for their college experience. Tom helps parents answer questions like:Is college the right choice for my teen?Would my teen thrive best in a secular or Christian environment? What are the differences between private, liberal arts and big state schools? How do I get involved without appearing controlling or overbearing?Written from the perspective of a Christian parent, this book places particular emphasis on the parent's role as nurturer and shepherd of their children's spiritual future. This resource would also be excellent for youth leaders and mentors of high school students nearing graduation.
Customer Reviews:
Not bad advice, Christian or not.......2006-07-12
"The college search is as much an art as it is a science" (p. 13).
"Your teen's foundation of faith should be a strong consideration when choosing a college. During those undergraduate years, he will learn not only what to think, but how to think. Your student will question many things during college, including his faith. And the questioning of faith is not necessarily a bad thing -- it's a normal part of development. Think of it as an unpacking of faith" (p. 19).
"Many Christian parents naively send their student to a state school because of the affordable cost, without counting the cost of that experience on her spiritual well-being. In ten years, do you want to be asking yourself, "Was the cost really worth the price?" (p. 55).
This slim book does not bash non-Christian schools, but it does send a warning message: your son or daughter will be exposed to other thoughts and beliefs. For me, that is one of the points in SENDING your kid to school. Enough said.
The interesting thing is that Thomas Shaw really has a number of good insights into the college selection process, the admissions process, funding college, and "letting go." These insights are good for all parents helping their students go to college, Christian or not. If you are non-Christian, you will probably tire of the Biblical quotes sprinkled throughout the text (they are italicized and offset, and easy to skip over). If you are Christian, Shaw leads you through instructions from the Bible that are relevant.
The college selection process is complicated! Whether you like this book or not, never depend on one source of information. Read as much as you can, and make sure you visit those potential colleges. College Bound is one step in this journey.
Son or daughter looking at colleges? BUY THIS BOOK!.......2006-06-13
This is an outstanding book that begins with the philosophical considerations that parents need to help their students think through regarding the decision about life after high school and ends with very practical advice about options on how to pay for college. The intended audience for this book is the parent themselves, not the student; and the advice is solid, well-research and presented in a easy-to-understand manner that parents will appreciate. One caveat about the book, it ends when the student goes off to college - it is not a book about parenting through the challenges of college, only the decision-making process of selecting a college and the work necessary to get a student to that right next step. But, in what it does present, College Bound is really a very good read.
Shaw begins with helping parents think about the various options for their soon-to-be-graduating student - including presenting the option of taking a year off of school to mature, work, travel, etc., which is excellent advice and needs to be presented as a viable option to parents today. However, if college is in the future for a student, Shaw makes sure that parents help think through the various options of community vs. four-year college, and Christian vs. secular. Not every school fits every student and sometimes the choice that parents made isn't going to be the same as their children - a good reminder that Shaw drives home early and often.
College Bound is full of useful and practical wisdom for narrowing down the college choice as well as tips for admission, financing the college experience and the transition from high school to college. It's like having a college guidance counselor at your fingertips! Shaw ends with an encouragement to Christian students to make sure they plug into a good church home in their new community as soon as they settle down and then gives a few pages of valuable Internet resources as a final parting gift for those who still need more information. I found the book to be easy to read, very informative, and written with a sound Biblical foundation and would suggest this book to any Christian parent of high school-aged students.

Unlike Leo Fender,Orville Gibson or C.F.Martin not much is generally known about these D'Angelico or D'Aquisto even though they are regarded as the greatest archtop builders in history. This book individually traces the lives and guitars of each man and features many rare and beautiful photographs.I found this book to be a fascinating insight into lives and work of two men who could only be described as the true masters of their craft.

Out of the Shadow.......2001-03-14
Out of the Shadow, by Rose Cohen, is a book about a pious Russian Jewish family that immigrated to America, after leaving Russia, due to strict unbearable laws that were past by the Czar. The father left Russia in pursuit of a better life in America for his family. As he earned somewhat of a living in America, he sends for his eldest daughter, and his sister, to come and help him make more money so that the family doesn't have to stay in Russia for mush longer. As the twelve-year old Rahel, twenty-one year old Masha and tired father work in America, they soon makes enough money to send traveling tickets to Russia for the rest of the family to come to America. They struggle in America to be happy, accepted, healthy, prosperous and become "Americans." Many drastic changes take place in their first years, and continue throughout the book. The family becomes less pious, but don't forget the Jewish religion completely. Losing their piety was a way of fitting in America. They tried to understand the life in America, and saw that it is very different than their lives in Russia. The family of seven (5 kids and the parents) was not really a family anymore because every family member had their own responsibilities. The kids worked so hard and barely spent any time at home, and begged by their mother not to work on the Sabbath. Rahel and her sister worked in sweatshops, and most of the money they earned was not for them, but for the family, and that was the most important thing. With this money they would buy food, and clothing. The mother came with her children to America to live a better life than they had lived in Russia and expected a lot more money, food, clothing, and happiness in America. Instead they survive with barley any food, money and happiness. I feel that all these changes are very hard to live with, or rather get used to because the family had a different view of life in America and are being let down by their expectations. These changes are rather sad, and discouraging, in my opinion because as I had read this book, I really felt their sorrow, and pain. They also had some happy moments, for example when the whole family was finally together (in America), but those happy moments are rare as the reader reads on in the book. The living style that the family had in America was one very different from Russia because in Russia, their home was with more warmth and even though the father went away to America, the house still felt nice and warm. The family itself had each other and everyone took care of everyone. The grandparents were living with the whole family, and the grandma especially had a very warm personality, I noticed as she talked to her grand-children etc. The mother seemed a lot happier too because she seemed like the family is all that she has and she must keep the house alive and happy for everyone, although she too at times was sad. Russia was undergoing many difficulties, and the Czar made the living standards impossible for some people, including the Jews. The mother and if I may add, the father as well, had many other things on their minds, which would cause for some tears of their own. Even though the log house in Russia, in my opinion seemed warmer (affectionately), it was hard for the family to keep a "warm" and comfortable living environment in America. The family didn't even live in a "better" area! They lived in the ghetto, full of poverty! They wanted a better life, and lived in misery in America! The family was always hungry because they couldn't make enough money to buy enough food and there was so much crying! Not knowing how to read and write was also very hard for the parents, and the kids as well. For immigrants lacking education was not good, and it kept them from getting better jobs in America. America was very different than Russia and since the people were different and the living style was different the family had to fit in by looking like Americans! This was also very hard for Jew's for they were not liked among the other people in their neighborhood. The father had to cut off his beard and his ear locks to look American so that nothing would happen to him as he walked in the streets. The mother was persuaded to take off her head covering so that she wouldn't look old fashioned, and this was a sin. Rahel reminds her mother that the father trims his beard and she answers to Rahel, "Is that why...I too must sin" (Cohen p.154)? In my opinion, they should've just stayed in Russia, and kept their Jewish faith because America is changing them in a bad way. I say this because I feel very strongly about the Jewish faith, that it is very important, and no one/nothing can ever take it away from me, or change who I am. The parents became very dependent on the children in the family for they worked most of the time and they too were the ones that brought home the money. The children would work just as hard as the adults did, but earn less money and were treated differently because of their young ages. When Rahel was a servant, she felt inferior to those who lived better than she did. Children (adults too) were the ones that would keep the family alive, I would say, but also lived the worst lives because they had such back-breaking jobs at the sweatshops etc. "Fourteen hours a day you sit on a chair, often without a back, felling coats. Fourteen hours you sit close to the other feller hand feeling the heat of her body against yours, her breathe on your face. Fourteen hours with your back bent, your eyes close to your work you sit stitching in a dull room often gas light. In the winter during all these hours as you sit stitching your body is numb and cold. In the summer, as far as you are concerned, there might be no sun, no green grass, no soft breezes" (Cohen p. 125). Rahel's family lived during a horrible time and being immigrants was the worst. They became less pious, had extremely difficult jobs and were unhappy most of the time. I really enjoyed reading this book because I felt that as a Jew, I can really relate to this story, aside from the fact it took place during the 1800's. This historical period was very hard, and as I read this book, a tear or two fell. The story was a success at the end, I feel, when the eldest of the two sons was on his way to Cornell University, but aside from that, the family did have an extremely difficult time in America. In my opinion they failed to live a better life, than they had anticipated they would live when they were still in Russia. Out Of the Shadow was definitely, one of the best books that I have read.
