Book Description
Thomas Verner Moore (1877-1969)-priest, author, teacher and practical psychiatrist-was one of the first advocates of modern psychology among Roman Catholics in the United States. In this fascinating biography Benedict Neenan brings to life this man of staggering accomplishments and recounts the many twists and turns he took in the search for his professional and spiritual development.
Skillfully intertwining the dramatic interaction between Moore's intense activism and his deeply felt need for contemplation and asceticism, Neenan points out the many paradoxes and tensions of his rich and eventful life. For example, Moore started out in his adult religious life as a member of one of the most progressive and distinctly American religious communities, the Paulists, and ended it as a member of one of the most traditional orders, the Carthusians.
Besides detailing the life of this accomplished man, this work offers a glimpse into American Catholic life and American social life in the first half of the twentieth century.
Here is a book that will interest history buffs, anyone interested in the connection between religion and psychology and religion and psychiatry and persons with an interest in 20th century American spirituality or modern monasticism.
Book Description
Strength Training Over Fifty focuses on the health needs of more senior men and women. Men and women lose as much as 20-40% of their muscle mass, beginning in their 30's. This muscle loss, often thought of as an irreversible part of aging, is really the result of disuse. Strength-building enables you to regain this lost muscle. It is the key to feeling and looking great after 50. With over 80 explicitly described exercises and 350 color photographs, this user-friendly book will teach you what you need to know to get started, get strong, and stay motivated.
- Get started with reassuring advice if you are just returning to training.
- Stand straighter (and have a trim waist) by strengthening your core.
- Improve functional strength, making all the actions of daily life easier.
- Learn which muscles can be strengthened to alleviate specific problems such as back pain or achy knees.
- Improve your balance.
- Exercise safely, even with arthritis, osteoporosis, or if you are over 65 years old.
- Learn about nutrition, motivation, and how to design your own work-out.
- Follow extended exercise programs, including sessions for exercise on the road, a 15-minute work-out, and one to protect and strengthen your lower back.
From the foreword by Michael George, fitness expert and trainer to Richard Dreyfus, Meg Ryan, Julianne Moore, and James Spader:
"This fun and challenging book will help the older trainer rediscover his or her body, beginning with the basics: posture, breathing, and motivation...Start training with this book and you'll never look back-I promise you."
About The Author:
D. Cristine Caivano (MA Columbia University) is an exercise/movement therapist in private practice in NYC. A former dancer and teacher, her work now focuses exclusively on the needs of the over-50-year old exerciser.

Strength Training Over 50.......2007-08-03
This is a great book! It is packed full of pictures, explanation of anatomy and a multi-leveled program of getting fit and staying fit.
Strength Training Over 50: Stay Fit and Fabulous.......2007-07-16
Staying Fit and Fabulous is certainly a challenge over 50 and this book is an amazing tool for success. It shouldn't even be evaluated with the perky-chatty books it shares the shelves with. The book is quite well thought out from the medical illustrations which help me focus and visualize, to the spiral spine of the book inself which lays flat as I coordinate my excercise routines. I find myself using it to help "cure" my aches and pains from simple daily chores and have finally found how to relieve that backache at the end of the day. I am amazed how dramatically my posture, energy and stamina have improved. I have been singing the praises of this handbook since the day I found it.
Outstanding book for active people over 50.......2007-06-27
Great book on training for the over 50 set. I bought 4 copies after the first one. My physical therapist wanted one, my Mother at 89 took my first copy. I also bought my health consious sister a copy. Outstanding mterial. Cris does a wnderful job making fitness fun and easy to understand. Everyone over 50 needs a copy!
Don
Very disappointing.......2007-06-10
I am 73, and as a person who has worked out all his life, I would not characterize this book as a work on strength training. It barely qualifies, at a very basic level, as a fitness manual. Also I think that some of the exercises outlined are ill advised for someone who is elderly and frail.
If you have ever worked out in the past, are over 50 and want to get back in shape, this isn't the book for you. You already know much more than you will find here. I returned this book.
Fitness for Boomers.......2006-05-25
As a 52-year-old who has always shunned weight training for fear of injury, I think this book is terrific, for three main reasons:
1) The authors realize that many older exercisers are very out of shape and/or recovering from past and present injuries, and their exercises are shown in several variations, from very easy to moderately difficult;
2) There is a lot of emphasis on core body strength and proper form, which not only helps you do the exercises safely but also improves your posture (which I think is one of the best ways to look younger (have you ever noticed how you can tell someone's age without seeing their face, just by observing how they stand, walk and sit?)
3) It's hardcover, but with a spiral spine, so you can lay the book open flat on the floor next to you as you do the exercises (why aren't all fitness books made like this?)
Even people in their 70's, 80's and beyond can benefit from this book.

A complete waste of money.......2004-09-14
Poorly produced apparently from a word processor with some updates handwritten. Right hand margin in many pages cuts off at least one letter. Photo quality so poor that it was a waste of ink. Most are small and grainy of about 200 dpi. Overall quality is that of an inkjet printer and a copy machine. Listing of Sires and Dams does not give color or birthdate. If a male dog is listed as a Champion his dam is given. Then you have to turn to the section for Dams and flip through them to find particulars for the Dam. Either way the only information given is the number for the corresponding issue of the Stud Book. Save yourself money and buy "The New Miniature Schnauzer" by Dan Kiedrowski instead.

Customer Reviews:
Every dad should have one!.......2001-06-13
I purchased five copies of the book--two for expecting fathers, one for my brother, one for my boyfriend's brother, and one for my boyfriend and me. The book is an excellent way to give dad's and mom's ideas for creative ways to entertain and interact with their kids.
If you want your kids to think you're cool................2001-06-13
These days fathers need all the help they can get. My eight-year-old daughter used to think I was the coolest guy in the universe, but lately I've been getting hip-checked by the backstreet boys and n'sync. I've found myself competing for her attention; and I've been trying for the past few months to pull any fun rabbit out of the hat I can find (I got one of those "juggling for klutzes" kits and practiced in secret). A few weeks ago, a buddy of mine (also a dad- and familiar with my plight) told me he'd come across a really cool book called The Amazing Dad. I pounded the pavement till I found the lone remaining copy at a local bookstore; and I was blown away- on darn near every page there's a cool trick or fun activity that any spaz can do. Every one I've tried so far has left my children laughing, squealing, and begging for more. The diagramming makes everything an easy-to-duplicate, no-brainer. This book has become my "FUN BIBLE"- I keep it hidden so as not to reveal the source of my new-found coolness. Each time the kids ask me "Where'd you learn that?", I just give them a shrug and play it off like "Oh, I've got a million of 'em- you ain't seen nothin yet"- which means they better come out with volume two before I run out of rabbits. Seriously- a dynamite book.... big thanks to Preuss and Livera for making me a cool dad again. Maybe they can teach me to sing and dance.....
Quality Time Made Easy.......2001-06-07
This book is a handy instruction book about how to liven up the time you spend with your kids. It could have been titled 'The Amazing Parent' since the activities described within are easy for a dad, a mom, a grandparent, even a babysitter or a teacher to perform and enjoy with kids. If you are always in a rush and know you need to spend more time having fun with your kids, this is the manual for you. Are you a single parent who wants to make the most out of your weekends with the kids? It is great for kids of all ages, but seems best for those under 12. It has great anecdotes throughout for dad inspiration. You don't need to read it cover to cover to gain some kind of message about parenting. Instead, open to any page and have fun instantly. I dare you!
Fantastic Father's Day Gift from Parents or Wife!.......2001-05-26
Almost every boy wanted to grow up to be Superman, or some other impressive super hero. With this amazingly powerful resource, any Dad can look just like super hero to his children. All you need are a few materials, a little time to read, and some practice. The book has been written by a magician (Mr. Livera) and a teacher/entertainer (Mr. Preuss). Between them, they have created the best resource I have ever seen for family fun with the 2-6 year-old set.
"Do not reveal the source of your superpowers!" With that injunction, you ar encouraged to slip the book "in your dresser beneath a pile of socks." On the other hand, if you want to keep peace in the family, show Mom the book too. She'll want to use some of these magic tricks and entertainments also. You remember Wonder Woman, don't you?
The book is very versatile. I had images of only magic tricks when I picked it up. I was very pleased to see that magic tricks were only a small part of the repertoire. My favorite section involved very humorous games that can be played in the car. Now, in our family, we occasionally heard "how much longer 'til we get there?" and "I'm bored." If you ever have those problems, this book will turn those times into fascinating fun instead.
Here are the titles of some of the sections: Acrobat of Anatomy, Adventures, Captive Creativity, Chauffeur of Shenanigans, Amazing Dadini, Greatest Show on Earth, Most Valuable Pop, Maitre d' Mayham, and Mr. Mystery.
In addition to getting to be a very special Pop, this book will also fascinate you with its creativity. I also suspect that you will start some new family traditions that your children will carry on when they are parents.
After you have been using the book for a while, I suggest that you take some of the activities and change them into ones that are uniquely suited to the interests of your family. That will make you feel even more like The Amazing Dad!
Enjoy being amazing, and bring joy to all!
Amazing!.......2001-05-09
If these fellas aren't Dads, and amazing ones, it could have fooled me. Their suggestions are broad and clever, and should be read by everyone, not just fathers, who spends time with children. The Amazing Dad should be on bookshelves in every home and child-care center in the country.

Book Description
Rammstein is definitely one of the most refereshing and challenging rock acts of the last years. Since their appearance in David Lynch's "Lost Highway", the band received a wide attention around the globe and Rammstein videos couldn't possibly be left out in any MTV rock show. Their spectacular videos and firespitting live performances resulted in a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Act and to 2 million albums sold in the US to date. It is hard to think of any other foreign speaking rock band whose lyrics are sung along by 20.000 or more American fans in their live shows. This Rammstein photo book is a breathtaking visual trip into their world.
Customer Reviews:
dieses buch ist ja wunderbar........2004-12-03
Is this book worth getting? Absolutely. It's mostly a lot of stills from the videos, etc., but with lots of other stuff (the pic of the band with lederhosen and suspenders killed me). There is a short piece written the band members about how they came to be in the band, etc. (everything is in both German and English, translations usually good except for the reference to a 'menschengroß' flower, which is erroneously translated to 'life sized' rather than human sized). There are also earlier drafts of songs lyrics and poems, translations are also included to these, but anyone who does not understand the German texts should remember that translations certainly lack the resonance of the original text, and oftentimes they are unable to convey the puns, double meanings, etc. which are present in the original text.
Rammstein: The Experience of a Lifetime.......2003-04-09
These people are amazing. I have never heard such incredible music in my life. I listen to their music for hours everyday. Their concert performances are astonishing, even those who are not fans (yet) listen and watch in awe. When Till Lindemann sings, I become so mezmerized, and added to this powerful voice is the beautiful music played by the five talents, creating a melody wonderful enough to make a person high. The book is a way to get a glimpse into the lives of these masterminds.
Sehr gut!.......2002-03-26
Even though I expected more text on this book, I think it's really good, some of the pictures are masterpieces, especially the ones in black and white. I recommend it to all Rammstein fans. It's well worth.
Rammstein the book. Who says reading is boring now?.......2002-02-27
Im not much a reader, exept for the master mind of horror,
Stephen King and his brilliantly written work. When my book finally came in, I was so filled with joy that I went in my room and started reading the wonderful book which Rammstein graced the cover of. There was wonderful pictures and they six german master-minds of teutonic shock-rock are quit interesting to read about. I must admit, no other band has ever brought me the thrill of being a obssesive fan like Rammstein has. Those 160 pages filled with the deranged Berlin natives are the best 160 pages I read since the hilarious, Gertrude Besserwisser's "Sheisse!". If your a Rammstein fan like me, get Rammsteins book because as long as you have to wait for it to arrive, you'll be ten times as happier to get the honor to hold it in your hands and read it over and over and over . . .
Plus you get to see pics. of the wonderfull mad-men, Till,Christpoh,Flake,Oliver,Paul and not to forget the wonderful,
Richard Kruspe. These guys are great. Yeah, I know that my review makes me look like a Rammstein lovin' ..., but I urge you to buy it as soon as you can, like RIGHT NOW!!!!!
But thats besides the point.
The very best book about this band! (It's the *only* one...).......2002-01-31
Boy, did I ever love reading through this truly excellent compilation of common promotional and rare personal photographs in this well-worth-the-50 Deutschmarks book about the greatest German rock group of the modern, or any age, in my opinion. But hey, no offense to the Scorpions, or even Kraftwerk, it's just that Rammstein is definetly my favorite. Being of German heritage, I greatly appreciate the material included. There are many great-looking photos, ranging from on the set of their videos, to live in concert, to them on Holiday in Greece and Mexico. But that's not all. From each member of the group (except for Oliver the bassist, for some odd reason) there are personal recollections. What detail, and what exiting lives these guys have led! They speak about meeting, recording, performing live, and sometimes their personal lives as well (i.e. wives and children). And I love it! Back to being part-German, yes, that's just where I was to buy this item, last December, in Heillbronn. Right in the middle of the Weinachsfest und Markt (Christmas festival and market), boy, was that ever a fun time! Anyway, I really enjoy this book. Herzeleid, Sehnsucht, and Mutter are masterpieces of rock music, and man, these guys put on a hell of an action-packed show! But only from what I've read and seen in this book and on the Live Aus Berlin DVD, unfortunatly, I've never actually attended a live show. But that doesn't mean I still can't! I hope to do so one day, yes, indeed! Bottom line here, get this book! The Six Teutonic Titans of Metal will be in your gratitude. Auf Wiedersehen, jetzt, meine Damen und Herren!!!!

Customer Reviews:
Valuable .......2005-05-10
This book has a valuable introduction tracing the development of Jewish participation in sport in the modern era. It also contains 'portraits' of individual Jewish athletes of distinction. It is a valuable resource .
However when one wishes to inspire the younger generation it is helpful to tell stories of the struggles individuals made to make their way . But perhaps for that , another volume is necessary.
Lots of Legends.......2001-04-12
The International Jewish Hall of Fame has plenty of reasons to be proud - and most are listed in this book. Not meant to be a complete biography, it gives sample snapshots of these legendary athletes, coaches and sportswriters. Obviously there is a rich and deep heritage in the Jewish community and this books fosters that well.
Disappointing.......2001-03-22
One or two paragraphs each containing stats and awards. I was expecting more fleshed out biographies, perhaps outlining any adversities these folks had to endure, Jewish or otherwise. No or almost no personal information.
Book Description
Following the 1972 Olympics, a sportswriter referred to Mark Spitz, winner of seven gold medals, as "the first great Jewish athlete." He couldn't have been more wrong. As Jewish Sports Legends shows, Jews have excelled at athletics for centuries. This handsome volume illuminates the lives and unforgettable accomplishments of Jews in virtually every major sport played worldwide. Baseball stars Sandy Koufax and Hank Greenberg, basketball's Red Auerbach and Dolph Schayes, and football's Sid Luckman and Marv Levy are only a few outstanding examples. Did you know that-
- A Jewish woman, New York stenographer Charlotte Epstein, is "the mother of American women's swimming?"
- An ordained cantor, Ike Berger of the United States, once held twenty-three world and Olympic weightlifting records?
- Jewish, Lithuanian-born Senda Berenson introduced women's basketball to America?
- The NFL's New York Giants bought the entire 1928 Detroit Wolverine football team in order to acquire the contract of its All-Pro quarterback, Benny Friedman?
- Jewish Olympic champions Agnes Keleti (gymnastics), Maria Gorokhovskaya (gymnastics), Dara Torres (swimming), and Irena Kirszenstein-Szewinska (track and field) have won a combined total of 33 Olympic medals?
- South African rugby star Okey Geffin learned to play the game while a prisoner in a World War II German POW camp?
- An eighteenth-century prizefighter, Daniel Mendoza of Great Britain, was the first of more than thirty Jewish boxers to be crowned world champion?
Containing hundreds of photographs, Jewish Sports Legends introduces the famous, and not-so-famous Jewish sports greats throughout history. Also featuring great coaches, officials, journalists, and other significant contributors to the thrilling world of sports, it is a fabulous gift for all serious sports fans.
