"The Wall and other short stories" is a triumph in literature. Each story explores the depths of human thought and reason through an existential point of view. Each story can be interpreted different by all readers, therefore making this a great book for discussion.

"The Wall" is the first story presented. It consumes the reader because of its brilliant writing style. The story is narrated by a man named Pablo Ibbieta, who is in a jail cell with 2 others awaiting execution the following morning. Every event that transpires that particular night is analyzed almost too thoroughly thus leaving the reader in a trance. I wont get into it too deeply, but believe me, this story is worth reading...i guarentee it will have to be read again. After finishing the story, I felt as though nothing mattered. Who cares if the dishes were not washed, who cares if I would be late for work. Believe me, this story will have a profound impact on the way you think. Don't be surprised if you have a new appreciation for life. This story enlightens the mind.

Another great story from this book is called "Erostratus". Erostratus was a character who wanted to be famous, so he burned down the temple of Ephesus, which was one of the 7 wonders of the world. This is the central symbol of the story, the quest for glory. It also brings up an interesting point when the narrator asks one of his colleagues "Who built Ephesus?" and the colleauge did not know, he only knew who burned it. "Erostratus" in short is one mans decent into madness because of his quest to be remembered. The ending of "Erostratus" is filled with suspense and makes your heart beat in fear. It serves as a grim reminder that there are people of this type, and we should be prepared at any time for them to strike.

There are also 3 other stories, that being "The Room", "Intimacy", and "The Childhood of a Leader", which also draw the reader inside the workings of the mind through an existential window (ie: we are all here by accident, man is condemned to choose).

In short, these stories are all perfect, and leave the reader with a feeling of enlightment. Sartre is an extremely intelligent and clever writer. This is evident in these short stories. So turn off the television, buy this book, and start questioning your existence, you owe it to yourself. Besides, they are short stories, so you will be able to get through at least one a day...that isnt much to ask considering the benefits you will reap by reading them.

    Book Description

I am writing this book to share ideas with people who are suffering with the voice disorder of spastic or spasmodic dysphonia(SD). This book will hopefully share vital techniques that I had used to help me regain the use of my speaking voice. I had been to many doctors and have spent countless hours of research year after year trying to find a cure, to no avail. It had been a very frustrating quest, but I am very pleased to announce that there is definitely hope for anyone suffering with SD with the proven techniques of direct voice rehabilitation.

The author is trying to sell you a self help manual that reads like a sob story of broken dreams. Thank God it's very short, or else you wouldn't be able to take the tedium. Although on the other had you do sort of feel his pain. When you decipher the exteraneous stuff he does offer some good advice. But it's not a quick fix or very enlightening.

5 out of 5 stars SD is not Nuerological.......2005-03-17

I also went to see Dr. Morton Cooper for 1 month of DVR (Direct Voice Rehabilitation), and I am pleased to say thanks to him I have my voice! I still struggle with the voice image on occassion, but if I do what I was taught in his office it is a normal voice. Tom Johnson mirrored my experience so much, I thought I wrote the book. If you have SD you need to read this book. Please do not believe what the Dr.'s are telling you about SD. Go to Dr Coopers' web site and read the testimonials. Thanks Tom for explaining your experience in such detail and for letting SD's know that DVR works!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Helpful.......2001-08-05

Although I probably do not have spasmodic dysphonia as described in the book, I do have a problem speaking at times. I have found by reading this book that some possible causes are breathing related. This book gave me some helpful breathing exercises along with some voice exercises. Both have helped immensely.

                  Book Description

It is a rare garden does not have at least one area that poses a problem, one that is too wet, too windy, or has poor soil. Many gardeners do not realize that these situations can actually present an ideal opportunity to grow plants that would not do well anywhere else in their garden. This practical book, now back in print in an affordable paperback edition, shows enthusiasts and weekend gardeners alike how to make even the most difficult part of the garden—whether a north-facing wall or the worst clay soil—attractive and successful. For each of 13 garden locations expert horticulturist Graham Rice explains the nature of the problem, prescribes a remedy, and provides detailed lists of the best trees, shrubs, climbers, annuals, and perennials to suit that site. Line drawings demonstrate many of the suggested techniques, and color photos show the results of good garden planning that anyone can achieve. Graham Rice trained at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, where he spent nearly seven years. After six years on the staff of "Practical Gardening" magazine, he became a freelance consultant. He is heard regularly on radio programs, and has written several books, including The Gardener's Guide to Growing Hellebores, which Timber Press published in 1993.

This is a wonderful little book that is the ultimate guide to knowing what to plant in specific difficult garden situations, such as shade, chalky soil, bad drainage, slopes, seaside, etc. The author is a great help, often giving exact cultivars of plants that will work for your problem spot. Seems to me any book by Graham Rice is amazingly researched and written in a spritely style that's easy to read yet wonderfully instructive. Good for beginners as well as advanced gardeners.

                          Book Description

The definitive account of Vincenzo Bellini's life and work. This superb work includes personal letters, intimate details of relationships with men and women, an interpretation of the biopsy report explaining the circumstances of his tragic death and previously unseen illustrations from the early 1800s.

4 out of 5 stars The Sicilian Swan.......2007-03-11

Here is a new biograpy (at last) of the superb Italian composer Vincenzo Bellini written with intelligence and care of purpose. Bellini's life is unfolded sequentially from his birth in Catania in 1801 to his death in Paris in 1835. I very much like the way Mr. Galatapoulos sets up the chapters giving the details of Vincenzo's life as he was writing a particular opera, then the performance of the opera with reviews and stories of the cast, then the story of the opera itself, then a musical examination of the work and finally suggested recordings. It is on that last detail that he gets in trouble with the previous reviewer regarding Mdme.Callas but to me that is small detail. The opera world brims over with Callasistas and after all Mr. Galatapoulos IS Greek. Vincenzo never minded sharing the spotlight with a great soprano! The author uses that same chapter-set-up for each of the eleven operas Bellini wrote and it gives the book an agreeable rhythm. I appreciated the close examination of Bellini's lifelong relationship with Francesco Florimo which I felt was done in a very even handed way. And I also appreciated the author's reluctance to speculate on several parts of Bellini's life where there is no historical record to support it. I found myself wanting more social and political ambience in order to frame out that interesting period of Italian history in which Bellini lived. But no matter, I found this book to be informative and compelling and it re-inforced my love for this short-lived genius who poured out some the most sublime music of the 19th Century.

2 out of 5 stars an okay biography with a strange and wicked twist.......2005-07-26

As a biography of Bellini, this book is a good read and provides much information. If, however, you're looking for new AND objective views on Bellini's works and their 20th century interpreters (singers), I suggest you run away from this book. This book is really a by-product of the author's personal devotion to Maria Callas, and it's rather obvious once you realize that the author has written 3 books on the famous singer. He does not hide his bias, as the inscription reads: "... for Maria Callas and Tullio Serafin."Not surprisingly, in this book the author repeatedly preaches Callas' "genius" and has absolutely nothing bad to write about her singing. To him, Callas is the one and only gold standard in the "true" Bellinian style. This shockingly narrow perspective is extremely disturbing in this seemingly objective, "definitive" biography of the composer. The author has almost nothing good to say about another equally famous Bellini interpreter -- Joan Sutherland. He reluctantly acknowledges her "ease of the upper register" but dimisses her art and technique as mere "facility." Callas, on the other hand, is "perfection" (whereas any objective listener will point out that Callas is never without shortcomings). Rather predictably, he places Callas on the same level and category of Pasta and Malibran. What a surprise. If you happen to be a defensive Callas fanatic, the author's comments might suit your taste. However, if you appreciate and enjoy styles and possibilities of interpretation other than that of Callas, the author's prejudiced writing can be unbelievably laughable, naive, ignorant, one-sided, not to mention offensive, insulting, disgusting and infuriating. I'm an admirer of Callas' art myself, but I find this kind of blind devotion very limiting and harmful to the arts. What a shame - this book could have been a fine biography if only the author could resist promoting Callas inappropriately at the same time. The author's opinions on the operas themselves aren't exactly refreshing or original, either. Here you will find some hackneyed criticism on the less established operas, especially "Beatrice di Tenda". Personally, I find the music thrilling and agree with the composer that "Beatrice" is a worthy sister of "Norma". Who knows, had Callas picked up and championed this role, maybe the author of this book would have a different opinion on this unjustly neglected opera? This book contains poison for the sensitive soul of the genuine lover of Bellini's music. Proceed with caution.

A good description of the terrible conditions in the Lodz Ghetto. But, most importantly, a view of Rumkowski that I have never read before. A difficult man in a very difficult time. Only God can judge.
