Book Description

An intensely moving and personal story by Stanley Swift, one of Field Marshall Montgomery's famous Desert Rats, recounting battles fought in a variety of landscapes, including the African desert. Provides a moving and authentic account of his march through Normandy, Belgium, Holland, and finally Berlin, in 1945.

The Seventh Armoured Division, also known as the Desert Rats, began in the deserts of North Africa. The dividion was a fighting regiment, fueled by its success and untouched by its early misfortune. Under the command of Field Marshal Montgomery, the division successfully marched through Normandy starting in 1944 and then on to Belgium, Holland, andfinally to Berlin in 1945.

After the war, Stanley Swift rarely spoke of his experiences. Years later, he was persuaded to record his memories. As he spoke into a recorder, it became apparent he had a unique story to tell. This is his story - one you will not easily forget.

5 out of 5 stars WORLD WAR II - A British soldier's memoir - 1940-1945.......1999-05-16

Add another facet to the World War II retrospectives ('The Greatest Generation' Brokaw, 'Saving Pvt. Ryan' Spielberg). Now, indefatigable British soldier Stanley Swift, member of the famed 'Desert Rats' under Field Marshal Montgomery, puts a human face on HIS war that sometimes criss-crossed beleagured paths of American and other Allied troops. 'Oh, What a Lovely War! mirrors Pvt. Swift's unforgettable innermost thoughts and feelings of his life in battle, long surpressed by a self-imposed half century of silence. You'll chuckle, laugh and shed tears following the strictly British account of his 'adventures' as a recruit in training during the 1940 London blitz and assignment to the Royal Horse Artillery, Seventh Armoured Division. Then it was on to historic desert battles with Nazi General Rommel's forces in north Africa, through Italy to the Normandy beaches in France, and more combat across Belgium and Holland to final victory in Berlin in 1945. It is his sister, Evelyn Swift Luscher, a Sacramento, California, author, who gives poignant voice to her brother's memoir through her dedicated transcribing and editing of his many irreplaceable audio tapes. Stanley Swift died in April, 1996, in Nottingham, England, at the age of 81. I liked the book because it told so much we never know from history books and evoked so many emotions. Everybody should know what war REALLY is. Truly, an excellent read. Elaine Adams California Writer's Club Sacramento, CA.

    Book Description

This book presents the most comprehensive introduction to the life and ideas of Lev Vygotsky (1896-1934) yet written. As a key to understanding one of the most potent influences on developmental theories this century, Van der Veer and Valsiner explore Vygotsky's ideas in the contexts of Russian psychology and the politics of the inter-war years. The authors chart Vygotsky's intellectual development through the course of his life, establishing links with his predecessors and contemporaries and illustrating his intellectual interdependence with the contemporary scientific community and the creative endeavors of the fine arts. Careful analysis of his social context allows detailed discussion of Vygotsky's indebtedness to literary scholarship, with psychoanalysis, Gestalt psychology and paedology. Understanding Vygotsky not only shows the extent to which Vygotsky's work can be further developed to be relevant to the end of the twentieth century but also opens up scope for a more detailed analysis of his contemporaries. It will be essential reading for all students of Vygotsky and his ideas.

Compelling, provocative stories of Addiction and Loss

"Mom, nobody wakes up one day and decides to be an addict." The stories contained in this book are about people from every walk of life, socioeconomic levels, religious and ethnic backgrounds whose lives were intertwined with people who didn't "decide to be an addict."

They all share one common bond - living with, and loving an addicted person.
Contained within the pages of this book are stories by bereaved parents who have suffered the ultimate loss: The loss of their precious child.

Read how addiction, whether it be drugs, alcohol or gambling, destroys not only the addicted person, but their entire circle of friends and family.

No one escapes the tentacles of addiction. Like an octopus it reaches its deadly arms around us and squeezes the very life out of all of us. Our society is affected in ways we never imagined.

Read excerpts from middle school students on the peer pressures they face today.

Read the stories of parents who have gone through hell, sacrificing their very sanity trying to save their child.

The profiles of these children will change your mind about what kind of people do drugs. GOOD KIDS DO DRUGS TOO!

5 out of 5 stars This couldn't happen to my family..........2007-08-22

That is what we all tell ourselves. Reading this book is not a small task, it is a journey into the headful of ghosts and deep despair each parent has gone through in dealing with drugs and how it affects their kids. As a physician we see a lot of pain walk through the door. Most people did not choose to be sick and there is usually some sort of remediation. What do you do when those drugs are what your kids are now a slave to? This is a stunningly honest and intense look into each parent's ultimately futile fight against drugs and it's destructive influence. Even if you're children are too young to use, or you are sure they don't, you should read this book to truly understand the dangers out there. That, and the fact that these people were us, these kids were our own. They weren't neglectful parents with renegade children that got what was coming to them. The most hurtful part of this book is the realization that almost no one is immune to this problem and a sober attitude and constant education might be the only defense. It could very well be your own child next.

5 out of 5 stars Urban Teens and Support Group Moms Find Much Benefit from I Am Your Disease.......2007-08-17

I Am Your Disease: The Many Faces of Addiction continues to be a valuable, highly recommended tool in my role both as an urban high school English teacher and as a Hearts of Hope support group leader for mothers whose children have died. As this book is passed from teen to teen or from mom to mom, the reactions are the same as my own - a deep appreciation for the insight, strength, and life lessons that eminate from each family's heartfelt account. Their courage to share their struggles with us makes us stronger. We listen to the stories, cry over them, and react.

In the classroom this collection unpacks a vital look into the harsh realities of young people's drug addiction, with consequences involving profoundly painful suffering for all involved. During my students' daily 20 minutes of silent sustained reading, they are invited to select a book of their choice. I Am Your Disease has become one of the most talked about and requested books. Each family's personal account opens opportunites for exploring the who, what, why, where, when, and how of addiction, leading to valuable discussions and students' written responses to prompts about this important topic. Questions, personal connections, and possible solutions to drug and gambling addiction begin to arise. All are engaged becausethe topic is one that relates to their lives or the lives of someone they know.

At my Hearts of Hope faith-based support group, moms in bereavement are on a life-long journey of managing grief as they seek hope through a relationhip with God and biblically-based teaching. When we strategize ways to turn heartaches into something positive for ourselves and others, we applaud the I Am Your Disease families and counselors who shared their pain, struggles, and heartbreak in this moving and dynamic book. They have successfully helped all of us by presenting a raw, truthful account that educates us and then leaves us pondering important questions while developing practical coping strategies.

The teens and moms I work with recognize that when we reach a dead end in life, it's not as easy as simply turning around and getting back on the path. Habits, beliefs, behaviors, and toxic relationships can make us feel stuck. I Am Your Disease encouarges people of all ages and cultural backgrounds to open a window of understanding so we can see clearly and take the appropriate steps needed to help ourselves and others. Certainly this book offers the support needed to navigate our journey. The knowledge we gain about the power of addiction and the desire we have to share this important information with others lights our way - thanks to the courageous contributors of I Am Your Disease.

5 out of 5 stars The Time Has Come to Take Action.......2007-08-07

Terrorism, youth violence, and warfare are frequently in the headlines. Concerns are raised over and over again about youth killing youth and a myriad of other issues that confront our society daily. What I found poignant about the book, I Am Your Disease: The Many Faces of Addiction, is that it describes, from the perspective of a parent, the horrific nature of drug addiction in America.

Through their eyes you connect with the pain, anguish and bewilderment they confront, asking themselves what they could have done to prevent this from happening to their child. However, if you quickly step back you realize that while each specific instance is the result of a particular set of circumstances, drug addiction has become a vast silent killer, in many ways inflicting a more devastating impact than any terrorist group could have on our society. In fact, it is unusual to find a friend, family member, or loved one who is not aware of at least one individual who is suffering from substance abuse.

It is because of the way in which each parent describes her child that the reader quickly realizes that no parent can guarantee that they will not have a similar experience. The children come from all social and ethnic backgrounds, all upbringings and environments. Some were scholars and others athletes - all offering no discernable evidence that they were drug users - but yet, they were.

What will it take for America to wake up and sound the alarm about the devastating nature and dire consequences of drug addiction, to our families, communities and country? I found it difficult to read the book without stopping to think about my children, and what it is that I can do to raise the public awareness and recognition of this significant problem.

This is a book that I recommend for parents, grandparents, youth, college students, educators and business leaders. There is a message for all of us on its pages. If we take heed, addiction will no longer be "silent," we will have taken action! It is my hope that all who read the book will involve others so that the topic may be raised and discussed over and over again - and move us closer to reducing the number of lives lost and lessened due to drug addition. The authors have succeeded in creating a volume that is alarming, realistic, informative and, hopefully, an impetus for change!

      5 out of 5 stars Sobering.......2007-03-11

This is a very sobering book detailing the lives of real people who are dealing with addictions and the devastation it creates in their lives. Highly recommended for anyone who is trying to come to terms with addiction and how it affects not only you but everyone we come in contact with. This disease is contagious and takes people down. I think this book would be very good in middle and high school settings to teach young people the danger of any kind of substance abuse.
I also think that all parents should read this as soon as their children reach middle school. A hard emotional read but well worth it.

I sent this book to my son in jail for drug related crimes. He loved it. The other inmates are waiting their turn to read it. My son actually has a list of them. Unfortunately most are in jail on drug related crimes and this is a real eye opener for them. Hopefully this will help them understand their addiction a little better and be one step closer to becoming sober.

      5 out of 5 stars A Gem.......2007-09-14

This paperback edition is almost 30 years old, yet I have never read anything so clear and sure-footed about the subjective world of awareness and unawareness. Virginia Satir's extended analogy, which is most of the book, delights and astonishes me: we see our sub-personalities as players in a theatre first introduced and then playing a particular drama and resolution that the author thinks it might help us to see - such effectiveness; simplicity and kindness is surely hard-won. I cannot respect it enough.

      5 out of 5 stars Incredible Woman.......2000-05-20

Virginia Satir is well known to family therapists and in NLP communication classes. Her way is one of putting you at ease and giving you credit for all that you are. I came upon this book quite by accident and discovered simplicity and elegance within a message that could have been written just today. Virginia teaches working with the parts that make up each individual and she embraces that each person is unique. Virginia is gone now but the work that she did comes through on the pages of this one simple book, she was an incredible woman indeed.

4 out of 5 stars Good Satir Basics.......2000-04-02

This easy to read book is a great introduction to the works of Virginia Satir. It is full of information that is useful to both Therapists and general readers. The illustrations by the author make the book fun to read and easy to understand. Readers who enjoy this book will probably want more depth that can be found in other books by Satir.

              Book Description

Sea vegetables, edible seaweeds, or sea greens are rapidly becoming popular with chefs and home cooks. They are highly nutritious, mineral-rich, and have been used for centuries in Asian, Irish, English, and other cuisines. Sea vegetables are widely available and can be found in supermarkets, health food stores, and Asian markets.

Jill Gusman, a senior cooking instructor and lecturer on foods, shares her passion, knowledge, and recipes for enjoying these flavorful sea treasures at home.

With Vegetables From the Sea, home cooks can gradually introduce sea greens into soups and salads or make them them center of the plate. Miso Soup and Soba Salad with Arame to new classics such as Sea Palm Chicken Salad with Roasted Garlic and Wakame Succotash, here are seventy-five unique dishes, including Nori-wrapped Sole, Hijiki Crostini, Sweet and Sour Sea Palm Stew, and Dulse Mashed Potatoes. Vegetables From the Sea includes in indispensable full-color reference guide that shows all the major sea greens available, from agar to wakame, and explains everything about each, including how to buy, store, rehydrate, cook, and savor them anytime.

3 out of 5 stars Not for foragers.......2006-01-30

If you want a few fancy recipes, or are new to sea greens, then this is the book for you. The author is very experienced at using sea veggies to spice up a meal. However, except for a couple of salads, I did not see a recipe where sea veggies were the main ingredient. If you want to forage your own then don't get this book. Not only does the book not tell you how to pick them, it discourages you from doing so.

              4 out of 5 stars Worth a try.......2004-10-02

Sea vegetables are an acquired taste. Knowing that most people are not familiar with sea vegetables as food, the author explains what those algae are, how and where they grow, and which ones are edible. She then discusses the nutritional value and provides a misleading chart of nutrients. She claims that some sea vegetables contain 10 times as much calcium as cow's milk, but she compares the values of dried algae to the values of drinkable milk. If she compared edible servings (non-fat milk and rehydrated algae, or non-fat dry milk and dried algae), she would find that milk and wakame (one of the algae highest in calcium) have about the same amount of calcium per serving. Most other algae have lower values.

Gusman then goes on to discuss the healing values of algae and claims that they help our bodies fight disease that results form a polluted environment. She does not address the issue of ocean pollution and the fact that algae absorb and therefore contain pollutants, which may or may not be absorbed into our bodies - nobody wants to elaborate on this issue.

Her chapter about the individual algae, however, is great. The author describes the algae, shows photographs of the dried products, and tells us how to use them in the kitchen.

The major part of the book is dedicated to recipes, many with photographs and additional information about the algae. Some of the recipes have an algae-stranded-on-the-beach flavor. Moreover, when I followed the advice of a Japanese friend to soak, drain and then sauté Hijiki and Arame in olive oil for three minutes before adding any liquid, and to always add a teaspoon each of sugar and rice vinegar, some of Gusman's recipes became more palatable.

I also tried her Nori Condiment, which turned my stomach when I read the recipe, but which tasted surprisingly good in the end. The recipe collection includes soups, salads, snacks, main dishes, vegetables and sweets. Some of them, like the condiments, can be made in a few minutes, others take more time. Some of them are pretty good, others are better without the addition of the seaweed (e.g. curried sweet potato soup does not benefit from the wakame). But overall, I think this is an interesting cookbook worth considering.

I bought several copies of this book as gifts for friends, 3 of whom are physicians interested in sea vegetables and easy, new recipes that are beautiful too! Well researched, beautifully photographed; unique and first class...I use the book for cooking at home and the kids can enjoy nutritious results too. Highly recommend the book! Jack M.

                  Book Description

A founder of comparative anatomy and giant of 19th-century biology, Georges Cuvier began publishing his 22-volume Histoire Naturelle des Poissons in 1828. Cuvier's history became a landmark survey in the science of fishes, delving back before the Greeks to the Egyptians, Phoenicians, and Carthaginians. As an introduction to this monumental work, his first volume traced the development of the study of fishes as he understood it and outlined the criteria for classification that his own work would follow. This critically important essay -- arguably the first attempt at comprehensive marine biology -- now appears in English translation for the first time, accompanied by rich annotations.

Theodore Pietsch's commentary on Cuvier's Histoire Naturelle des Poissons brings this important volume to light and highlights its historical significance. Appreciative modern readers will include ichthyologists, evolutionary biologists, and historians of science.

"Theodore Pietsch is a well-respected ichthyological historian particularly of pre-Linnaean periods. Those of us interested in these sorts of things should be eternally grateful to him for his time and energy in providing such a nicely edited volume that covers such a huge span of time. No one has written a comprehensive history of ichthyology and this work fills a truly major gap in early historical details." -- Brooks Burr, Southern Illinois University

"This book is an important text for historians of science as well as ichthyologists." -- Alwyne Wheeler, editor Archives of Natural History

5 out of 5 stars Rubber Stamp Carving.......2004-05-21

This book clearly details the ins and outs of carving your own rubber stamps, for those whose creative instincts urge them to follow their own path in the world of stamping. With clear, non-technical language, the author shows in words and pictures how even the simplest and most modest of tools can create lively stamped images which can stand on their own or be incorporated into larger and more complex works.

This is a good "inspiration" book for either the novice entry-level artist/stamper or for the seasoned creator who is looking for new directions for their art. Luann strikes a nice balance with her presentation, with an instruction book that is user friendly and free of "tech-talk". The "how-to" instructions are clearly written and well complemented by excellent photos showing exactly how to proceed. This book will be appreciated by any who purchase it as a springboard into new areas and levels of creativity.

This book started me on yet another new craft obsession - carving my own stamps has turned out to be so much easier than I thought it would be!

I don't think there's anything the author could have added in this textbook - there are already wonderful stamps, a gallery, thorough instructions that are beautifully illustrated and tons of inspiration. Also a nice section for troubleshooting and fixing mistakes when something goes wrong in your carving - very helpful!

Very happy to have purchased this book!

I've been a stamp carver and art teacher for many years. This book is the best instruction guide for learning to carve that I have ever seen. The author has described all aspects of carving soft blocks for printmaking. Her step by step carving instructions are beautifully illustrated with good, clear photographs. This is a guide that can be followed by an absolute novice carver AND is very useful to the intermediate or advanced carver. As carving teacher that has given workshops all over the country, I found many of her carving tips useful. If I ever write a "how to" book, I hope it would be as helpful as this one. This book answers and illustrates with excellent photographs all of the FAQ's (frequently asked questions) that have come up in the carving workshops that I have taught. I own or at least have read nearly every stamp carving pamphlet and block printing "how to" book on the market. This book is the best I've ever seen. Sure wish I had written it!!

I found this book to be one of the best ever explaining why the education system is failing. The only people who could find fault with it would be school teachers, principals, and administrators. Robert Holland has researched this subject with more depth than perhaps anyone in the country and writes on the subject with clarity, accuracy, and wit. This book is a must-read.

Not With My Child You Don't is a "must-read" for every parent of a school-aged child! It provides an in-depth look into many of today's so-called "education reforms" and makes sense of the senseless for the average parent wondering what in the world is going on in their child's school classroom. It is an invaluable resource for any grassroots education activist or organization. With contributions from citizen activists from coast to coast, the book clearly shows that the problems in America's schools are systemic in nature and that ignoring them and hoping that the problem will go away is not a sensible alternative for parents who are truly concerned about the education their children are receiving. The Appendix resources alone are will worth the price of the book! Robert Holland is a talented writer who puts his many years in professional journalism to good use in providing American parents with a powerful, well-researched documentary exploring the multiple agendas that are a driving force behind "modern" education.

This was very disappointing. Lots of emotionalism, little of philosophical value. I read the book to try and understand the viewpoints of those who apparently don't believe in knowing where they are going before they leave. (Which of course would make one wonder how they knew when they had arrived?) I'd include my email address but I don't want those who believe in this book to fill up my in-box!

I'm not certain of its Btu value but, dear reader, that's exactly all it is good for.

                      Book Description

The acclaimed, bestselling rock-and-roll biographer delivers the first complete, unexpurgated history of the world’s greatest band.

The saga of the Rolling Stones is the central epic in rock mythology. From their debut as the intermission band at London’s Marquee Club in 1962 through their latest record—setting Bridges to Babylon world tour, the Rolling Stones have defined a musical genre and experienced godlike adulation, quarrels, addiction, legal traumas, and descents into madness and death_while steadfastly refusing to fade away. Now Stephen Davis, the New York Times bestselling author of Hammer of the Gods and Walk This Way, who has followed the Stones for three decades, presents their whole story, replete with vivid details of the Stones’ musical successes_and personal excesses.

Born into the wartime England of air-raid sirens, bombing raids, and strict rationing, the Rolling Stones came of age in the 1950s, as American blues and pop arrived in Europe. Among London’s most ardent blues fans in the early 1960s was a short blond teenage guitar player named Brian Jones, who hooked up with a lorry driver’s only son, Charlie Watts, a jazz drummer. At the same time, popular and studious Michael Philip Jagger–who, as a boy, bawled out a phonetic version of “La Bamba” with an eye-popping intensity that scared his parents–began sharing blues records with a primary school classmate, Keith “Ricky” Richards, a shy underachiever, whose idol was Chuck Berry. In 1962 the four young men, joined by Bill Perks (later Wyman) on bass, formed a band rhythm and blues band, which Brian Jones named the “the Rollin’ Stones” in honor of the Muddy Waters blues classic.

Using the biography of the Rolling Stones as a narrative spine, Old God Almost Dead builds a new, multilayered version of the Stones’ story, locating the band beyond the musical world they dominated and showing how they influenced, and were influenced by, the other artistic movements of their era: the blues revival, Swinging London, the Beats, Bob Dylan’s Stones-inspired shift from protest to pop, Pop Art and Andy Warhol’s New York, the “Underground” politics of the 1960s, Moroccan energy and European orientalism, Jamaican reggae, the Glam and Punk subcultures, and the technologic advances of the video and digital revolution. At the same time, Old Gods Almost Dead documents the intense backstage lives of the Stones: the feuds, the drugs, the marriages, and the affairs that inspired and informed their songs; and the business of making records and putting on shows.

The first new biography of the Rolling Stones since the early 1980s, Old Gods Almost Dead is the most comprehensive book to date, and one of the few to cover all the band’s members. Illustrated throughout with photos of pivotal moments, it is a celebration of the Rolling Stones as an often courageous, often foolish gang of artists who not only showed us new worlds, but new ways of living in them. It is a saga as raunchily, vibrantly entertaining as the Stones themselves.

This is an excellent in-depth biography of the Stones and their music. It's an easy read, full of interesting information, lots of good photos, and covers the entire career of the bad boys of Rock and Roll from their early days till the time of the book's publication. It is well-researched, balanced, fair to all involved, not overly fawning, and filled with new information I had not read elsewhere. I highly recommend it.

I was required to buy this book for a musicology class focusing on the Rolling Stones at Boston University. We were asked to read pretty much the entire book as supplemental reading along with the class. I like the way the book chronicles the events and feelings of the band throughout their gargantuan career however there are a few things I could have done without. I love the music but the rambling way that Davis describes each album when they released them is not really an easy read. I think that if he had somehow devised a different writing style for these crucial descriptions I would have given the book a full five stars. Nevertheless, its a good read whether you are or are not interested in the Rolling Stones and the pictures are also interesting. Its a good history.

                      4 out of 5 stars I Got Satisfaction.......2006-11-02

This is the only Stones' book I've read and I plan on reading more, but as a start, I was impressed and feel Davis has written a decent biography of the band. He appears to deal thoroughly with the early years of the band all the way up to the death of Brian Jones. The Mick Taylor years seem a bit rushed (he wasn't there that long, though), in fact, the last two decades of the band seem written hurriedly, but I guess they weren't working nearly as much as they had in their true youth or weren't making as much news.

The details of the interrelationships of Anita Pallenberg, Brian Jones, Keith Richard and Mick Jagger alone would probably make a great book on it's own. I wouldn't mind knowing more about that!

I don't care what the subject is, you're never going to find one book that will be the end-all. You gotta read everything you can get your hands on & decide for yourself what you wanna believe. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed this read on the Rolling Stones. Three fifths of this book concentrates on the Brian Jones period. That's a good thing. Sure, there are some "facts" missing or just plain wrong, but I wasn't there to edit the manuscript for Mr. Davis. Maybe someday we'll get "Old Gods" part 2 & Davis can do a better job on the last 30 years of the band. Read it. Enjoy it. Bring your salt shaker.

                      Book Description

This compelling work tells the story of Anne Skorecki Levy, a Holocaust survivor who transformed the horrors of her childhood into a passionate mission to defeat the political menace of reputed neo-Nazi and Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke. Through Levy's tale, Lawrence Powell connects the prewar and wartime experiences of Jewish survivors to the lives they built in the United States and shows how their experiences as new Americans spurred their willingness to bear witness.

5 out of 5 stars The Klansman and the little old Holocaust survivor.......2004-05-26

Troubled Memory is the story of the Skorecki family, which survived the Hoocaust by escaping from the Warsaw Ghetto and going into hiding, intertwined with an accessible history of the Warsaw Ghetto. But is is also the story of Anne Skorecki Levy, 45 years later and transplanted to Louisiana, deciding that she doesn't want Klansman and Holocaust denier David Duke to become the governor of her state. On all three counts - as a tale of survival during the Holocaust, a history of that time and place and the story of little Anne Levy's dogged pursuit of the bigshot politician during his election campaign - the book reads like a taut thriller, a real page-turner from beginning to end.
In its linking of the Holocaust in Poland with the troubled racial history of the American South, Troubled Memory is reminiscent of Styron's Sophie's Choice - except that this is fact, not fiction. It's a compelling, genre-busting book that is not quite like anything you've read, and it leaves you both feeling good and with much to think about.

5 out of 5 stars A Synthesis of the Holocaust.......2004-04-22

I am a student at Tulane University and have taken a seminar with Dr. Powell on the Holocaust. This book is the last book that he included on the syllabus for the course, and I understand fully how and why he wrote this book. At first I was a bit leery of his inclusion of his own work in the course, but the work is a great synthesis of traditional Holocaust study and how it pertains to American (particularly Southern) culture today.

The first half of the book largely provides a survey through a personal account of the sociopolitical landscape of World War II-era Eastern Europe: the reasons that the Holocaust occurred, bystanders, perpetrators and victims psychological profiles, as well as giving a very readable human interest story of the narrative of this one particular family. The second half picks up where most Holocaust narratives leave off: the post-war years, the family's emigration to America and the challenges that they faced in New Orleans as Holocaust Survivors, and finally, Anne Levy's battle against David Duke and the formation of the Louisiana Coalition against Nazism and Racism. The first half of the book is essential for understanding her drive in the second half of the book, and Dr. Powell does an excellent job in connecting traditional and new scholarship on just how frighteningly close Louisiana came to David Duke's authority and how important it is to be aware of the ideals that the Louisiana Coalition and Anne Levy espouse.

This book is written in a highly readable manner: the diction is not overly dense nor confusing and the personal story allows non-scholars to enjoy the material as much as a student of history or politics would. It is very obvious that Dr. Powell put an immense amount of personal effort and dedication into this account, and his contribution to the historical documentation of the Holocaust and its impact on contemporary society is a testimony to his skill as a historian.

5 out of 5 stars A Voice of Righteous Rage.......2002-02-26

This story chronicles the survival of small Jewish girls who were hidden in an armoire by their desperate parents in the closing days of the Warsaw ghetto. It easily matches the personal resonance and innocent terror of the far more famous Anne Frank Story.

Even after their final liberation as perhaps the only intact nuclear family to survive that infamous ghetto, the Skorecki family was due one more date with history. Survival, it turns out, was the story within the story. Little Anne Skorecki Levi, the little girl who survived by staying silent inside that armoire struck a blow five decades later for Jewish survival by speaking out against Louisiana's Neo-Nazi gubernatorial candidate David Duke, and helping to engineer his electoral defeat.

This account of Anne's travel along the arc from victim to victor is an inspiration and a reminder that each of us can and must preserve our collective memory, however troubling.

5 out of 5 stars a tour de force of writing............2000-10-20

I read books on the Holocaust to try to understand the times, the mileu, the horror, and the suffering. After more than 20 books, I realize that I can only scratch the surface. I will, however, never stop reading because of my fear that someday the deniers and the downgraders might get the upper hand.

Thank you to the the author and Anne Skorecki Levy for relating a story that is very, very moving as well as insightful and timely.

5 out of 5 stars a wonderful mix of memory and history.......2000-09-08

Lawrence Powell set out to write a book about the David Duke phenomenon, about how a KKK leader and Nazi could sit in the Louisiana legislature and run for the U.S. Senate as a Republican. But work on the book took him in another direction after he interviewed Anne Levy, a Holocaust survivor who confronted Duke in the state capital. Captivated by Levy's story, Powell has produced a terrifying, poignant and finally a triumphant book about the Holoaust as witnessed through the life of one of its survisors, Anne Levy.

Troubled Memory is a beautifully written and tender account of a personal story that stands as an intimate history of Hitler's final solution. Powell's prose will carry you into the Warsaw and Lodz ghettos and into the vegetable bin where 6-year-old Anne and her sister hid from the SS. This is a book that makes the Holocaust relevant to every reader. It will fill you with horror and wonder, and it will move you to tears.
