Accidental Warrior: The Forging Of An American Soldier
ASIN: 1930859481 |
Book Description
For many Vietnam vets, the end of the war was only the beginning of another-a war within themselves. This is an account of one soldier's struggle to come home. It is the story of combat and of the harassment at home that followed. Together they resulted in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a disease affecting an estimated fifteen percent of all Vietnam Veterans.
The sixties changed American politics, and the rules by which the game was played. Those who had shouldered the burdens of war returned to find an America changed. Hoping for the validation their fathers received on return from WW II, they found instead condemnation and a universal rejection that seared their souls. The peace movement, liberal activists, and student radicals who personalized the persecution of veterans, together with the media, popularized the perception that the war was immoral, and so maximized the harmful effects of PTSD on returning soldiers, soldiers who found themselves branded murderers.
JFK's noble and stirring words touched a generation of young men and women who were thus inspired to serve their country in a distant war. Andy O'Meara was one among many who answered Kennedy's call to Counterinsurgency. For them the price was steep, and the burdens were not shared by a public who rejected their sacrifice. The result: fifty-eight thousand slain, and countless walking wounded bearing the psychological scars of a brutal war. Their suffering is here in the words of one who survived the war only to find upon his return, that for him and other vets, a new war had only just begun.

A sober, severe, and open account.......2003-11-13
Only The Dead Came Home: Vietnam's Hidden Casualties is the personal testimony of Andy O'Meara, Jr., who served as a major with the 1st Cavalry Regiment (ARVN), and the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment (US). O'Meara was decorated five times for valor. Only The Dead Came Home focuses as much upon the struggle to resume a normal life as it does upon the stress of war itself. Only The Dead Came Home offers a candidly personalized accounting of the life-altering scars that post-traumatic stress disorder can leave upon the rest of combat soldier's life. A sober, severe, and open account, Only The Dead Came Home is informative, empathetic, highly recommended reading.
The author speaks for those long denied justice........2003-05-01
Why does one write a book? To whom does the author 'aim' the book? What is
the purpose, why expend the effort? To make a political, a religious, or
some other statement, or just to sell something, a product, to whomever is
willing to buy it?
Having reviewed numerous books written by friends, commentaries on the Art
of Leadership, Professional works, from Classmates, others, the reviewer has
seen a LOT of emotions expressed, running the gamut from humor,
frustration - from within NYPD, to outright pain and suffering, baring of
the soul, from Classmates, other friends, which leads to the initial
questions expressed in the preceding paragraph.
WHY DID THE AUTHOR DO THIS?
This is the second book published by Andy O'Meara, Jr. reflecting on his
Army career; this one details his Vietnam experiences. In his prior work -
"ACCIDENTAL WARRIOR", Andy basically delivers his autobiography, touching
briefly on some of the battles in Vietnam, and his bout with PTSD.
In this work, "ONLY THE DEAD . . ." , he describes in greater detail, and
goes into much greater depth, his experiences with PTSD and the treatment,
the pain, the soul searching, involved in coming to grips with this malady.
The title is a bit of an enigma, until one realizes that the servicemen who
returned alive to this country came home to an entirely different nation
than the one they had left, a nation polarized by lying, scheming
politicians, and a media that was anti-military to begin with, and furious
with the Johnson Administration for lying to them, so that truly, the only
service personnel who returned to the 'home' they had left, were the 'Dead'.
As the author phrases it, 'only the dead', who returned in caskets, were not
persecuted and/or demonized by the zealots of the anti-war movement, or at
least they never knew that they were being denounced and abandoned by those
they sacrificed for; served to protect from communism.
Thus, those who returned in coffins were 'home' in the sense that they were
beyond the pain and emotional suffering of their comrades who survived the
battles only to discover that they were hated and vilified by the enemies of
America, those enemies resident within her borders!
Many times the author contemplated taking his own life in a futile attempt
to end the vilification and persecution, but ultimately, in the end, refused
to carry out the sentence imposed by the New Left, on those who were
faithful to their country.
In the book he tells the story of soldiers who shared hospital wards with
him while he was recovering from wounds that almost cost him his leg,
soldiers who would call home seeking a modicum of emotional support, and
instead be berated by a loved one for fighting in the war, or for not
deserting while they had a chance; or situations where wounded veterans were
debarking from aircraft, some ambulatory, some on litters, who were spit
upon, reviled by the 'flower children', because they were 'baby killers'.
Although the author is still alive and well, still here, as with all the
other Vietnam Veterans, he feels that he has been changed forever. He writes
that it was a tough time to be a soldier, and they who served did not return
to the same land they left behind.
"Our comrades, our youth, our health, our sanity, our county vanished in the
years we lost at war."
In his two works to date, Andy O'Meara has come forth as an apologist for
the men and women in uniform who serve their nation, unheralded, often
reviled, and maltreated by politicians who failed to accept their
responsibility for the combat readiness of personnel and units, which were
allowed to atrophy, wither through neglect, through lack of funding, lack of
resources from DoD. What is particularly irksome to the reviewer are those
who opine from on high that military personnel are paid too much.
He writes to help Americans understand what happened back then - which seems
to be happening now, albeit to a lesser degree - where a certain segment of
society systematically attempts to make service personnel scapegoats for
doing what they do.
His is an attempt in book form to help the Vietnam veterans, indeed all
veterans, understand that what they did was honorable, despite charges by
the Left, by various and sundry 'celebrities', a select portion of the
'intelligentsia' that theirs was not an honorable cause.
It is a moving read; a needed first step toward restoring the dignity of the
men and women denied justice by the anti-war movement in America.
The Stories Behind the Story.......2003-02-14
This book is an essential companion to the author's first book, "Accidental Warrior". It addresses Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), one of the least understood psychological "illnesses" and legacies of the Vietnam War. In this book Andy O'Meara tells of his encounters with this disease and reconstructs the manner in which it took over his life. He weaves a gripping story consisting of remembrances of battlefield experiences, the shattering of illusions, betrayal of trust, homefront harassment, family dissolution, and finding therapy and recovery. This book helps strip away the psycho-babble, demeaning skepticism, and bureaucratic insenstivity normally associated with descriptions of PTSD. It also caused me to reread Accidental Warrior with new appreciation.

a pioneer in vitamins for health & prevention........2007-01-16
my mother used this book for us kids when i was growing up, my father's mother used this book throughout her life. the information in this book gave my great grandfather 20 more years after a heart attack from clogged arteries almost killed him & he was facing major surgery & a lifetime on medications. in her time adele was one of the first of a 'new' generation of thinkers to suggest vitamin doses & truly proper nutrition as a way to prevent & cure disease & common ailments. the basics of nutrition never change, but some of the information adele gives in this book has since been changed, updated or even outdated in some cases & revised in some way. many have tried to discount what she was teaching & tried to discredit her. she had some trouble years ago when a child died after the parents misread & misunderstood the suggestions & doses of vitamins she gave to help cure a certain problem. these days this is not a book for the beginner or novice in nutrition & vitamins as medicine, but is for those who already have a decent background in it. this is a good reference book, but you really need to have others on hand that have the more current knowledge & understanding of drug-vitamin-herb interactions, age related doseage restrictions & warnings, counterindications, etc. (jean carper's books on food as medicine are highly recommended by this layperson.) this book should be ONE of several in a reference collection for nutrition, food & vitamins as medicine, & healthy cooking, using each books' information together.
Excellent beginnings........2005-12-10
Back in the late 1960's, a good friend gave me a copy of Let's Eat Right to Keep Fit. After absorbing the message that book delivered, I became a truehearted fan of Adelle Davis. She showed us so much research had been conducted confirming the need and uses of vitamins, minerals, and other nutritionals. Long before the 1990's it was known folic acid is needed during the first few weeks of gestation to prevent spina bifida. Pre-eclampsia is still treated with magnesium sulfate, but to avoid developing that condition, Adele Davis prescribed the supplements an expectant mother needs. How did she know about these? She perused so many documents and researched studies, much of which occurred in the early 20th century.
Some have said her writings are outdated and newer research refutes some of her findings, but the broad picture is she opened the public's eyes about nutrition's role. She told us there have been people curious enough to pursue Vitamin A's impact on skin health, cold fish oil and its role in cardiovascular disease, tryptophan, serotonin, lithium, and the B-complex benefitting the central nervous system and the brain.
Adelle Davis planted the seeds. Are we wise enough to pick the fruit?

Get the Real Deal.......2005-09-09
I discovered this WONDERFUL book about 25 years ago. I was tired of going to the doctors and getting more pills. To list my ailments would take too long.
I decided to be responsible for my own health, and picked up this book in hopes of finding an answer. I did! Adele Davis was on the cutting edge of nutrition and it keeps her books fresh as any others printed today.
There are many books that offer help in wellness, but Adele Davis' books are a standard that they can't touch.
Let's Eat Right To Keep Fit.......2005-04-24
My originals were so worn from use, highlighting, and notes, I had to buy new ones. I started with these on my quest for nutritional knowledge around 1970. I've read many nutrition books since and I still recommend these first, and almost exclusively, to anyone who wants answers about their poor, mistreated bodies and why they misbehave so, and what, if anything might be done to help or fix the problems. She's always come through. I wish she were alive today.
I suggest keeping a copy of "Let's Get Well" and "Let's Eat Right To Keep Fit" as staples in the bookcase in every home. Read them and devour them and apply them. They're incredible. Also, with "Let's Cook it Right" I experienced the most delicious roast I had ever cooked, just knowing the science behind the meat and the heat.Literally cut with a fork, so tender! The woman's knowledge never failed to amaze me.
Two generations of allergy-prone family helped.......2004-12-28
Thirty years ago my mother used the nutritional principles in this book to "cure" my numerous childhood food allergies. I have always been skeptical of this claim, because it's possible that I simply outgrew my allergies at the same time that she pursued this therapy.
Now I have my own severely allergic children, and all that mainstream medicine has to offer me is total avoidance of the offending foods. Could it be that my children's immune systems are not functioning properly because of nutritional deficiencies that my family is prone to? Ms. Davis gives concrete, detailed information on the relationship between essential nutrients and immune system function, and how to improve your diet to provide what your immune system needs to function well. I picked up this book feeling very skeptical; having read it, I am persuaded that it is very likely that my mother's nutritional therapy played a larger role in my "cure" than I was willing to credit before. Mom, I'm sorry I doubted you. To anyone else struggling with allergies, this book is an excellent addition to your arsenal.

What's healthy?.......2004-12-01
I have my doubts about a health advisor that dies before the average person does. Oh, well, I think I'll go read the running book by Jim Fixx instead ...
MD's today are coming around to Adele's advise........2003-11-27
At last our medical profession are giving us the same advise Adele Davis gave us years ago. It is such a shame it took them so long to understand that it is nutrition not drugs that keep us healthy. Before I ever paid a visit to my Doctor I always checked Adele's book first and nine times out of ten she saved me that visit . If I could purchase antibiotics over the counter it would have saved me that visit .
Classic Health Information that WORKS!.......2003-01-06
Adele Davis' classic descriptions of vitamins, minerals and what they do should be on every one's shelf. She got it right and her classic books are the standard for getting and staying well. After all, body structure and chemistry have not changed and her suggestions and remedies WORK. It is a shame she is not still around to apply her expetise to some of today's tough health problems, but, she has left us with the basics to keep our bodies and immune systems tip top. This is a "go to first" book for many major health problems or to just "stay fit." Chances are, what ails you is a deficiency or combo of one. Just what are you deficient in? Check to see if the information works for you!!! The best part of the whole book is the Index. Use it well.

Excellent for everyday or special occasion cooking.......2007-10-04
This is an excellent cookbook, in that the recipes are creative and delicious yet simple and easy to prepare. I use it for quick weekday cooking and also for special occasions.
Another reviewer here stated that based on the names of the dishes that he *assumed* that the recipes would be complicated and time-consuming to prepare, and therefore gave the book away. It's too bad he didn't actually try to make one of the recipes because, quite remarkably, the preparation and cooking times are as short as indicated, yet the food is as good as he might have imagined.
Great speedy gourmet meals.......2007-06-26
The book is great -- I love to look at it and through it! Smile.
Not much to like here........2006-07-15
If recipes like Fillet of Beef in Tomato, Caper, and Anchovy Sauce; Wild Mushroom Polenta with Thyme and Aged Goat Cheese; Pan-Sauteed Swordfish with Anchovies, Garlic and Tomato Fondue and Cappellini with Pan-Seared Calamari, Tomatoes, and Lemon sound like spur of the moment then this is the book for you. Very little in this book looked as though I could just go to the kitchen and whip something up. I will be donating this book to charity.
Live up to its title.......2005-06-08
This is truly a book that lends itself to the spur of the moment. Great recipes, none too complicated, and all very tasty.
Take this Book Grocery Shopping!.......2002-11-26
My absolute favorite cookbook. The recipes are original and distinctive and truly can be cooked at the spur of the moment. The leek and yellow raisin chutney and flank steak marinated in peppers in adobo sauce are only two examples that can be prepared in 20 minutes yet truly impress. I haven't found a cook book that's so consistent and also suprising.

STILL THE STANDARD BUT NOT WITHOUT ITS WEAKNESSES.......2006-01-20
It's been almost 30 years since I bought my first overstreet Guide way back in 1977 featuring a Porky Pig cover by legendary Dondald Duck artist Cark Barks. While the Overstreet Guide remains the gold standard for comic book price guides, it is now without it's weaknesses. It is certainly the most comprehensive guide listing books from the so-called platinum age to the present and this time including info on books dating back to the 1700's although calling these books "comic books" is a bit of a stretch.
But the question is "Is more necessarily better?" Do we really need to include 1700's era comics? Are there really that many collectors for Platinum age comics? Approaching 1000 pages now (my first in 1977 was less than half that page count) the book borders on being a bit unwieldy. The type face had been reduced down to the small print of a shady contract and the book is sandwhiched between almost unending pages of ads. The market reports which I once loved to read are now basically out of date by the time the book hits the shelves and in today's age of online buying and online auctions et eBay, the market reports have outlived their usefullness.
While I will still buy an Overstreet every couple of years just to have one, I'd love to see them break down their guides, perhaps having a separate guide for Gold, Silver, and modern day comics both to make it more manageable and to target collectors who may only deal in one of these eras.

Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide, 35.......2005-09-20
This book was everything I thought it should be. Very informative and helpful when looking up old comic books.
Was volumous in information. Worth the purchase price.
Information Too Difficult to Find and Too Small Print to Read.......2005-09-07
This book contains a lot of information, however some of it is too difficult to locate and the print is so small that you have to use a magnafying glass to read it!! I have used it twice and threw it in a drawer. I would not recommend this book!!!
The Comic Book collector's Bible!.......2005-08-20
The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide is considered by many
as the bible, when it comes to collecting, grading and
pricing comic books. Robert M. Overstreet began the concept
in 1970 as a guide for fellow fans of Golden Age era
comics. The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide has since
expanded to cover the entire history of comics'
publications. It has grown to encompass a broader range of
information than later competitors such as the Comics
Buyer's Guide or ComicBase.
Although many price guides come and go, this long-standing
publication (which has been running for over 35 years) has
become one of the inextricable elements of comic collection
history. The Overstreet guide is a premier resource for
collectors and enthusiasts seeking information on anything
comic book related. It offers comic book collectors one of
the best pricing resources available.
Using the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide, I checked out
one of my magazines. Depending on what grade or physical
condition I use, "The Amazing Spider-man", issue #252, is
worth $24 to $32 dollars. Not bad for having paid about a
quarter for it. I wouldn't have known this without the
guide. As I get my collection cataloged and using the guide
to estimate worth, I imagine my new collection will show a
value of a substantial amount more than my 50-dollar
investment.
One drawback I have discovered with my guide, is the
extensive nature of all the information. It takes some time
to browse through and get used to how to use it. But it has
become an invaluable tool as I continue to build by comic
book website "www.comic-book-collection-made-easy.com". In
building this website, I have gained enough information and
knowledge to make a reasonable, rational evaluation of this
much-needed guide.

Customer Reviews:
Empowering book.......2005-05-14
I was diagnosed with CFS more than 10 years ago, and this was one of the books I got at that time. I just finished re-reading it, and remembered why I liked it so much. It emphasizes that there are many things *we* can do to help ourselves rather than waiting for the doctor to dole out little pills. The other two books I'd gotten were much more focused on a victim-mentality.
One of the reviewer mentions Murray's recommendation for exercise. Yes, hard exercise or physical strain knocks me flat on my back for a few days. But, gradual amounts of light exercise do make me feel better, and I've been able to do more over the years. Murray perhaps doesn't emphasize the gradual part of the exercise program. I wish he'd been clearer about what kind of exercises are useful, and how to gage how much is too much. He doesn't mention anything about yoga, either. He *does* mention in other portions of the text that physical exertion does lead to excessive exhaustion.
One problem with the book is the overview nature. It does cover a lot of different things, but doesn't really delve deeply into any one. It does have some recommendations for herbal support, and gives a good sample diet. But, as it does cover a breadth of things, it does suggest further avenues to explore.
I don't feel this book is the end-all and be-all of CFS self-treatment books, but it is a positive book, and well worth the money.
Do NOT but this book.......2003-08-26
This is the worst book about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome that I have ever read! His suggestions to exercise show clearly that he NO understanding of CFS/CFIDS! Yes, exercise will help many people with fatigue, even chronic fatigue; but not Chronic Fatigue SYNDROME. For someone with true CFS (also known as CFDIS) exercise will make things worse, sometimes far worse!
He also talks about all kinds of other things (such as hypothiroidism) that can cause fatigue but have nothing to do with CFS. (other than the fact that if you have CFS these things have already been ruled out by your doctor and are not the cause). So long discussions of those causes of fatigue are useless if you've already been diagnosed!
There are a lot of other holes in this book. It was a total waste of money, and I'll be throwing it out!
There are many GOOD CFS/CFIDS books, buy one of those!
(such as "Running on Empty" by Katrina Berne,PH.D , "The Doctors Guide to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome" by David S. Bell,M.D. or "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, A Treatment Guide" by Erica F. Verrillo and Lauren M. Gellam these 3 books are very helpful and have accurate information.)
Great Help.......2002-07-30
Most doctors give us medication that doesn't help. This book offers real ways we can help ourselves!
Do Me A Favor..........2000-08-08
Before you read any farther, scroll up and look to the left column.
Click on the link that says "table of contents", read it,
and then come back here. Done? Good. That in itself should be
enough to get you to buy this book. All of Dr. Murray's books are as
thoroughly organized. You have explanations, common symptoms, and then
a whole array of dietary options and explanations of how any number of
nutritional supplements can help your condition....Michael Murray is a
standard in the alternative medicine field because of the research he
does and cites and because the supplements he recommends have found a
valid place in today's society.
An good source for those with CFIDS and their families.......2000-02-08
I found this book to be very well written with an style that was casual and easy to read. The information is through when needed yet doesn't overwhelm. It has been the best on the subject of CFIDS I have read.
Book Description
Shortly after John Lennon’s murder in 1980, Robert Rosen was given access to Lennon’s personal journals chronicling the reclusive last five years of his life. Haunted by the journals, Rosen interviewed key figures from Lennon’s final years, visited the important locations from his life story, and pieced together the historical record to interpret his personal reflections from the Dakota years. The portrait that emerges is a life in turmoil, as Lennon vacillates between fame and reclusiveness, indulgence and asceticism. Each chapter offers a glimpse into different aspects of Lennon’s life, including parenthood, drug use, his relationship with Yoko Ono, and esoteric and religious explorations. “Entertainingly salacious.” — Booklist “Nowhere Man is a gripping read that no Lennon fan will be able to resist.” — The Times (London)

GREAT BOOK. But note, it's FICTION.......2007-06-06
I read this book in December. When I picked it up, I could not put it down! I knew from the offset, however, that this book is mostly made up of the author's fantasy. He's read the journals and they are gone. He's filled in the blanks with his imagination. The result? An interesting, fun, and thought-provoking read.
I have never idealized Lennon because I knew that he had problems of his own. Reading this book touched on the kind of problems that he could have had. I want to read more Lennon biographies, especially since I don't know what parts of this book are true and what are false. Above all, like I said earlier, this is a gripping read that you won't be able to put down!
Just remember much of it is speculation.
A man shaped by his success.......2007-02-07
When I started this book, I knew, from the many years of following the story, that John Lennon was a unique person. But this book puts into perspective his daily struggle to maintain his life in the face of his personal demons. He was and is a testament to the fact that fame, however lucrative, creates a development pattern for the "star" that actually secludes its participant and forces the person to live inside a self created world, devoid of outside normalization. This is a tribute to a man who continued to the end to search for himself in the middle of all the noise. In my mind, he succeeded in ways you and I will never have to understand. Great insight and easy reading. I recommend this highly for any Beatle fan.
good details.......2007-01-04

Not Just Another Lennon Bio!.......2006-05-19
I've read scores of Lennon bios over the years and "Nowhere Man" has become a personal favorite. A lot of the Lennon books that have come out in recent years aren't bringing anything new to a subject that's been written about to death in the 25 years since his horrific murder. Robert Rosen's "Nowhere Man" is coming from an entirely fresh perspective. Not only in the WAY it was written (the author read Lennon's diaries) but in the writing style itself, which features an almost poetic sensibility that really appealed to me. One of my favorite things about "Nowhere Man" is Rosen's savvy decision to incorporate the reading materials that figured so prominently in Lennon's life during his final years. By doing so he takes the reader on a journey into Lennon's inner mind. A journey the author himself took when reading Lennon's diary. The end result is a vivid portrait of Lennon's final years. I would highly recommend it to anybody looking to learn more about that era of his life.
Nowhere Man: The Final Days of Robert Rosen.......2005-04-12
I am surprised that so many people gave this trash a decent rating. While this book certainly holds your attention, the author, by his own admission, says the book is based on "fact" and the author's fantasy. And what a fantasy it is! It seems if he can find something negative to say or something sexual, he fantasizes about it and writes it.
That alone should serve as a warning, yet I read this book in my library's biography section, not the fiction section.
Rosen's other claim to fame is his admission that he began the project by working with Fred Seaman, and later became a turncoat against Seaman. He even went to far as to run to Yoko and spill his guts so Yoko could use this information against Seaman in court either at the civil or criminal prosecution. What a backstabbing jerk. So you know right away that Yukko had some say or influence in the content of this book. Otherwise, why allow Rosen to release it?
I would probably have given this book 3 stars if, right from the beginning, the author admitted that this was a fiction. But to pass this off as a biography is dishonest and deceiving.

Nuremberg Laws.......2001-02-23
Ingeborg Hecht. Invisible Walls and To Remember is to Heal. Translated from the German by John Brownjohn and by John A. Broadwin. Evanston: Northwestern University Press, 1999.
Most people have heard about Hitler's Nuremberg Laws. But few are aware of their actual significance. Ingeborg Hecht's book Invisible Walls and To Remember is to Heal shows in detail the impact of the laws on the everyday life of her family, her Jewish father who got divorced before the laws were promulgated, her Aryan mother, and her brother and herself, the half-Jews. History comes alive in her book: The exact wording of a legal passage (given with its date) is followed by the descriptions of the results of these orders. But there are also glimpses of human compassion, the revolt against dehumanization. And at the end, she does not shy away from looking critically at the reparation efforts by the new German Federal Republic. The importance of Ingeborg Hecht's book is also shown in its second half which gathers responses to the first half which was published by itself a few years before this new edition.
