      Book Description

Between 1978 and 1985 Dr Herbert Rosenfeld was one of a number of British analysts invited by a group of Societa di Psycoanalisi Italiani members to conduct a series of seminars and supervisions for the purpose of deepening and refining that group's clinical skills and theoretical understanding. This book is an illuminating record of that encounter, and a warm tribute to the significant influence of Rosenfeld's contribution.

"A remarkable woman whose sense of humor became her best weapon against an often dehumanizing disease." (Arnold Palmer, from the Introduction)

5 out of 5 stars All cancer patients should have this book.......2007-04-11

This book was given to me by a friend and I recommend it to everyone I know who has cancer. Although I would have preferred not to have such privileges, it is very true that there are benefits to being a cancer patient. This book takes a light look at some experiences to which we can relate, and laughter is extremely important.Cancer Has Its Privileges: Stories of Hope and Laughter

2 out of 5 stars Not too impressed:(.......2004-05-15

I read only half the book and was very uninterested. The whole frist part is just letters she received that are light-hearted but not funny. (I am a cancer patient myself) I have read funnier, more up-lifting books. Barbara Johnson has a great cancer book that I loved and laughed so many times out loud. I left this book at the cancer center for someone else to hopefully find hope in.

5 out of 5 stars A uniquely inspiring person and story.......2004-02-11

I've had the extraordinary privilege to meet the author and read her books. I am not a cancer patient, but I know an extraordinary person when I meet one because it rarely happens. Anyone-sufferer or not-will be deeply inspired by Christine's story, her spirit, her will, and her example. She can change your life. And while that is occuring, she makes sure that you, as she urges everyone daily, "don't forget to laugh."

5 out of 5 stars Cancer patients don't just need the medical facts.......2002-05-18

Cancer patients also need to feel happier (don't we all?) This title
      will help. Great book!!!

      5 out of 5 stars What a book!.......2002-05-09

"Cancer Has Its Privileges" is one of the funniest and most inspiring books ever written about a disease half of us will end up with --- and one quarter of us will end up dying from. Christine Clifford's keen wit and unique insights --- and, most of all, her humorous personal experiences --- helps to turn a tough pill to swallow into a spoonful of sugar. Christine is America's version of a modern day Mary Poppins....they even look alike! You'll be glad Christine landed on your front doorstep and popped into your life, especially if you or someone you love is battling cancer. If that's the case, then reading Christine's book is not only just the right medicine, it's a real privilege, too!

      5 out of 5 stars A Must Have!.......2006-09-21

This book is absolutely amazing! The juice recipes are incredible no doubt, but it's more than just another juicing book...The actual food recipes are divine and most of them have relatively short preparation and cooking times. I find myself going back to this book time after time. It's a definite must have and I would rate it in the top 5 of my extensive cookbook collection.

5 out of 5 stars Worth it for the Omelette Alone!.......2006-06-24

Juice for Life has more than juices, for sure. The recipes for cooked food should not be overlooked. The green goddess rice bowl and sweet potato wontons, with garlic sauce, is one of my favorite meals. Give this one a closer look!

5 out of 5 stars A favorite in my vegan family kitchen!.......2004-03-25

It was a warm summer's eve, on the anniversary of my first kiss. Angie and I wanted to go out and celebrate, so I could forget about the long-lost first-kiss-boy. We stepped into Juice for Life, after we'd chosen it from a list of Toronto vegetarian restaurants. The lights were low, the room was bustling, and a delicious aroma rested on the air. We sat at a quiet, two person, wooden table near the back. As the friendly waitress handed us the menus, we were shocked to see pages upon pages of juice selections-everything from "Lust for Life" to "First Kiss" (how appropriate). The meal selections were just as unique and bountiful, boasting health and great taste. We ordered. I drank a "Strawberry Fields" juice, and savored a vegan carrot cake. Never had I tasted such delicious, healthy and animal-friendly cuisine. We returned several times while I was in Toronto-for lunches, breakfasts and dinners! It went without saying, then, that I'd bought their much-acclaimed cookbook, entitled "Juice For Life-Modern Food and Luscious Juice."

The founder of Juice for Life, Ruth Tal Brown, began her now-successful business as a travelling juice bar, which later evolved into a permanent location at a former chicken slaughterhouse. Today, there are several JFL branches scattered throughout downtown Toronto, with famous diners such as Alanis Morissette, Lenny Kravitz and Reese Witherspoon. The restaurant has won numerous awards for it's fab food, too; it was voted Best Vegetarian Restaurant four years in a row by Now Magazine, three years in a row by Eye Weekly, and two years in a row by Toronto Sun newspaper. For those of us who aren't able to make it to this metropolitan city, we turn to the aforementioned Juice for Life cookbook, which enables us to enjoy all the same great tastes of the restaurant's juices and meals at home.

Since I purchased this cookbook, each and every recipe I have tried has left empty plates and diners begging, craving for seconds, thirds - even fourths! Every recipe is out of the ordinary, with unique twists, delicious flavors, and surprisingly, numerous health benefits. Who knew healthy food could taste this good? This was one of the aims of Ruth Tal Brown - to make healthful, vegan food taste great. The book is divided into two sections: Luscious Juice and Modern Food. Each section offers tips and information on the recipes, cooking preparation and equipment, as well as details of various ingredients throughout the pages. Some of the recipes are a little time consuming, but the wait is well worth it. My favorite recipes include the Fez Pita (baked eggplant, roasted zucchini, sundried tomatoes and yummy hummus) and the Jerusalem Rice Bowl (basmati rice, tahini sauce, hummus and herbs). The Luscious Juice section is quite large, subdividing into categories like "Energy Elixirs and Vital Fluids," and "Super Power Shakes."

The book is completely vegan, save for a few recipes that contain honey. I definitely recommended it to anyone who craves an exciting meal, who wants to surprise the taste buds with an unforgettable dining experience, and leave their body nourished and healthful. Juice for Life, from that summer night a few years back, has found a permanent and essential home in my kitchen. --Jessica Alleva

5 out of 5 stars Delicious and Worth a Visit.......2001-09-02

Best is if you can visit the Juice for Life restaurants in Toronto. The food there is just so good and the juices are great. But if you don't live anywhere near Toronto, this cookbook is the next best thing. It's basically delicious, mouthwatering vegan eats. I love the nori rolls (much tastier than your average vegetable sushi -- the secret is in how the rice is flavored) and the fact that she includes vegan pizza recipes (so hard to find cheeseless pizzas worth eating). I highly recommend adding this Canadian cookbook to your library.

For nearly 2000 years people have been creating art with only scissors and paper. Hans Christian Anderson used to use paper cutting to help tell his stories but the practice slipped away—till now. Grandma’s Magic Scissors: Paper Cutting from A-Z by Linda S. Day puts stories and paper cutting back together again. The result is pure magic. This is the kind of crafting, how-to-book that teachers, crafters and parents are looking for. With this book at your fingertips you will find simple, easy instructions on how to fold the paper, copy the patterns and cut out the artwork. Over 100 full sized patterns plus stories and poems that go with the patterns. These patterns can be used for telling stories, scrapbooking, home décor and more. Adults will be reminded of the joy of folding paper and cutting shapes, which become snowflakes, hearts, dragons and more. It will help children develop fine motor skills as they create magic with their own scissors and spend hours turning plain paper into art that is limited only by their own imaginations.

                    Book Description

Using the experience of the Parks in Peril program-a wide-ranging project instituted by The Nature Conservancy and its partner organizations in Latin America and the Caribbean to foster better park management-this book presents a broad analysis of current trends in park management and the implications for biodiversity conservation. It examines the context of current park management and challenges many commonly held views from social, political, and ecological perspectives. The book argues that.

Nine case studies highlight the interaction of ecosystems, local peoples, and policy in park management, and describe the context of field-based conservation from the perspective of those actually implementing the programs. Parks in Peril builds from the case studies and specific park-level concerns to a synthesis of findings from the sites. The editors draw on the case studies to challenge popular conceptions about parks and describe future directions that can ensure long-term biodiversity conservation.

Throughout, contributors argue that protected areas are extremely important for the protection of biodiversity, yet such areas cannot be expected to serve as the sole means of biodiversity conservation. Requiring them to carry the entire burden of conservation is a recipe for ecological and social disaster.

In this illuminating book, Deborah Tannen, the linguist and and bestselling author of You Just Don't Understand and many other books, reveals why talking to family members is so often painful and problematic even when we're all adults. Searching for signs of acceptance and belonging, we find signs of disapproval and rejection. Why do the seeds of family love so often yield a harvest of criticism and judgment? In I Only Say This Because I Love You, Tannen shows how important it is, in family talk, to learn to separate word meanings, or messages, from heart meanings, or metamessages — unstated but powerful meanings that come from the history of our relationships and the way things are said. Presenting real conversations from people's lives, Tannen reveals what is actually going on in family talk, including how family conversations must balance the longing for connection with the desire for control, as we struggle to be close without giving up our freedom.

This eye-opening book explains why grown women so often feel criticized by their mothers; and why mothers feel they can't open their mouths around their grown daughters; why growing up male or female, or as an older or younger sibling, results in different experiences of family that persist throughout our lives; and much, much more. By helping us to understand and redefine family talk, Tannen provides the tools to improve relationships with family members of every age.

Everyone with a family should read this book. It has excellent examples and you will recognize the conversations and situations because you have heard or participated in very similar communication fiascoes.

This makes a mother stop and isten to herself when she is talking to her adult daughter. Why does the daughter not like to visit her? Well, in this book may be the answer, the way the mother talks to her grown daughter. The book should go both ways in helping the daughter learn how to talk to her mother, who is wanting a close relationship to her grown daughter now. This is a very good book, one that can help people grow in their communications with each other.

I found this book to be helpful in understanding some of the language that goes on between my family, to know we are not the only ones out there with problems in relating to each other.

I cannot express how much this book has helped me understand what's going on in my family. A lot of arguments in my family center around who said what, how they said it, and why they said it. And Tannen provides almost all of the tools necessary for us to even think about reconciling.

This really is an enlightening book. What it does do, is explain what goes on in a particular aspect of any family - she explains how family arguments and conversations work, why some things are said but other left unsaid, and provides some suggestions and advice for going back and fixing some of those misunderstandings. She provides a really comprehensive overview of whole family setups, organizations, and tons of possible situations.

She doesn't say "here's how to fix your problems - they shall all be solved". She can't - she's not your own psychologist. But there is so much information to work with, that for a majority of families this will definitely provide a really good and solid basis for reconciling, and even allowing family members to start talking to each other civily again.

Tannen has done tons of research, and provides many examples from all types of families throughout the whole book - grandparents, partners, families with children, families without children, cross-culture families, etc.. I do have to completely agree with another reader that the examples Tannen gives could have been plucked straight from my life. I found one line in particular that could actually explain away years of misunderstanding between two whole branches of my family, myself included. It's also a very fast read - I read it through in just a few days, and I'm a slow reader.

If anyone in your family is even remotely having difficulties talking to others in your family, you should buy this book. I can't tell you how much it's helped me already. Had to buy two more copies of the book for other family members to "borrow".

"Everything we say to each other echoes with meanings left over from our past experience--both our history talking to the person before us at this moment and our history talking to others," says Deborah Tannen, one of the world's most famous linguists. We react not only to the message, but to the "metamessage": our interpretation of the unstated meaning, based on tone, relationship, and our past associations. Add in the connections and control issues among family members, and it's no wonder families have so much trouble understanding each other!

I Only Say This Because I Love You is aimed mostly at adult family interactions. Professor Deborah Tannen, the popular author of You Just Don't Understand, uses anecdotes filled with dialogues to illustrate why we hear criticism when the other person meant to convey caring, how family members create alignments with secrets and broken confidences, the dynamics of arguments, the power of apologies, gender patterns in family talk, and communication with teens. You're bound to recognize your family members--and yourself!--in Tannen's examples.

You won't find quick, easy answers for improving communication in your family, but you will discover another dimension of understanding what's really going on. Now if you could just get your mother to read the book! --Joan Price

Chapter 1 of Tannen's latest book provides some fabulous new insights to relationships of all kinds. Her discussions of the connection-control schema and meta-messages concept allow the reader to gain new perspectives on those sometimes frustrating interactions with loved ones (or coworkers, or strangers...). The rest of the book is really just "gravy" on top of the information in Chapter 1. Wow, I loved this book-- a definite recommendation to anyone interested in better understanding relationship communication (I see my mother's "advice," formerly a source of frustration/anger, in a whole new light!).

Would that it were true that family relationships came down to the words we use when we talk to one another. Tannen tries to wrestle complex family dynamics into conversational styles, and fails dismally. Much of the "insights" are superficial, suggestions for improving relationships minimal, and the examples provided are tedious and boring. I had high hopes for this book but it provided little that was useful to me.

3 out of 5 stars Solid Information, but haven't we heard it before?.......2001-08-20

I loved Tannen's _You Just Don't Understand_ because of the fresh insights it provided, so I was especially disappointed when _I Only Say This Because I Love You_ failed to provide the same feeling of discovery and excitement.

The book focuses on the frequent difference between the actual words that are spoken, and the meaning behind the words (meta-message), which is often about trying to create more connectedness or to alter the power and control dynamics of the relationship.

I found it interesting, but not revolutionary (and I'd come to expect revolutionary from Dr. Tannen).

By understanding the meta-messages both from ourselves and from others, we should have more power to address the meta-messages directly and not get involved in petty bickering and emotional responses that go nowhere except round-and-round.

Overall, I would say that the book contains useful insights and helpful advice, but for people who have already spent time analyzing their intimate relationships, there's probably not much new.

5 out of 5 stars why can't you communicate with so-and-so? find out!.......2001-08-13

I considered myself a good communicator. Then I read this book. It brought things to my attention that I was unaware of, about how I communicate with those closest to me. I was confronted with my own mistakes, in a way that I could not deny, and it motivated me to work on those areas right away! I also saw everybody else I know in this book--because it is about the mistakes we all make. It encompasses all of the different family relationships there are, goals of communication, why certain communication styles don't work, and suggestions for making it easier. The best chapter of all was called "I'm sorry, I'm not apologizing." It talked about why women apologize more than men, why apologizing is harder for men, power issues involved with apologizing, issues around accepting responsibility, and most importantly, the key components of a good apology. I will definitely have a better marriage as a result of reading this book, and I will be recommending it to everyone I know. It was interesting reading, and for me, hard to put down. It is an accessable and very knowledgable reference.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful reference on the levels of how we communicate.......2001-08-08

Exceptional reference for the verbal and the non verbal communicator. Best analogy "Do you hear what I mean?" As a wife of a non verbal communicator and a mother of three one who masters the english language and has strong communication skills to the youngest who struggle with basic communication, I have personally found this title to be instrumental in navigating through our own family and our verbal form of expression.

When exposed to those that struggle with the command of the english language I have had to learn new ways to communicate. This tile is completely on target and goes to posture, stance, tone and so much more.

How our presentation can make a positive or negative impact on the receiver. Often our intent of caring is misunderstood due to our presentation and/or the preconceived disposition of our intended audience.

After reading I was able to grasp the fact that sometimes no matter what was said it was improperly "processed." Truly it is the processing that counts most. Understanding that not everyone processes the same information in the same fashion can be eye opening and yet become an obvious reality.

The author drives home that we need to educate and understand and to be educated and understanding with our communication skills.

2 out of 5 stars Breezy and superficial.......2003-07-10

This book is extremely superficial and obviously the author didn't do very much research. I also got the CD, An Evening with Dorothy Fields, that was recorded live in 1972 (highly recommended). Winer has quoted verbatim a lot of what is said on the CD without putting quotation marks around it. Winer's book tells virtually nothing of Fields' personal life apart from the occasional bombshell like "she was now married a second time since her first marriage had been from the very beginning a mistake acknowledged by both parties [that's a vague paraphrase]" or "now the mother of two children, Dorothy had to..." or later on, "her drinking, always a problem, had gotten worse." There is no elaboration on any of these points. But the book does provide a broad overview of her career, even though a few of her films may have gone unmentioned. I wanted to know more about the person who wrote those easy-to-sing and easy-to-remember lyrics. Writers and publishers take note: There really ought to be a more in-depth biography of Dorothy Fields. She is too important a figure of the 20th Century American cultural landscape to be ignored. THE SUNNY SIDE OF THE STREET isn't much, but right now it's all we have. Until the definitive biography comes along, it will have to do.

5 out of 5 stars Not perfect but very good of kind.......2000-07-07

When the Smithsonian issued a recording in honor of Dorothy Fields, the 22 selections that boasted her lyrics included "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," "I'm in the Mood For Love," "Never Gonna Dance," "On the Sunny Side of the Street," "Big Spender," and "If My Friends Could See Me Now." Even those few titles reveal (1) how many familiar lyrics she wrote, (2) how long a time period she was artistically active, (3) for how many media she wrote. Her first datable work is from1926, her last from 1973. A remarkable woman in what was after all a man's craft.

Equally fascinating were her co-workers: Jimmy McHugh, Jerome Kern, Arthur Schwartz, Sigmund Romberg. And they are all here in Deborah Grace Winer's (Schirmer Books, 1997).

I did enjoy this book immensely and found it easy reading. What I missed was a sense of the personality around which this book is centered. Read about Dorothy Parker, for example, and you have a sense of what drove this artist. No such feeling comes from this book, in which the author has taken an objective view of the life and times of Fields and made little attempt to get "under the skin," so to speak. Perhaps I ask for the impossible since the author was not privy to any personal writings of her subject. But there are always friends who could have been mined for such information. Dorothy also tends to get a little lost for pages at a time as the personalities of other luminaries of the time are discussed. As fascinating as they all are, our interest wanders too often from the main character.

Still I give this book 5 stars for what it does and not subtract for what I personally think it lacks. The illustrations are quite good, by the way, and the inclusion of many of her lyrics is a good thing.

While a book by Deborah Grace Winer reads as smoothly as a beach novel, it also offers enough information for the reader to come away knowing and caring about the subject. "On The Sunny Side of the Street: The Life and Lyrics of Dorothy Fields", is no different, except her song lyrics tell as much about Ms. Fields as does the book. This was a savvy, sexy lady, a 1920's well-bred lady who could get away with writing-- "I've never mussed the crease in your blue serge pants. I never get the chance. This is a fine romance." Reading the lyrics themselves is one of the best things about this book. As familiar as they are, many hidden gems of wit and craftsmanwhip are discovered. Learning the stories about these songs came to be written, and why, and with whom, is all gravy. The meat is in the perfection: Could you get more precise about a relationship than, "Close As Pages In A Book"? More poignant than "Remind Me"? Fields was the only female lyricist who reached the plateau right up front with all those guys -- Hart, Hammerstein, Mercer, Porter. Her songs are catchy, colloquial, and cut to the bone. Dorothy Fields wrote with 18 collaborators, but her biggest hits came with Jimmy McHugh, Jerome Kern, and Cy Coleman. For the 1973 Broadway show, "SeeSaw", music by Cy Coleman, Ms. Fields wrote in, "Nobody Does It Like Me": "If there's a wrong way to do it, A right way to screw it up, Nobody does it like me." The song is perfect for the character singing it, but not for Ms. Fields. When she had a lyric to write, Dorothy Fields didn't screw it up. Nobody wrote it like her, right on the money. -Elizabeth Ahlfors
