this book was written by my grandfather. i have read little of it, but it was interesting for me. to read about what my grandfather went through was kind of cool.

Great description of labor pain.......2007-07-27

I highly recommend this book to anyone beginning their search on how to handle labor pain. The first chapter gives an excellent description of the different types of pain you may feel (better and more complete than any others I have read), and really helps you prepare for what you may face. The other chapters give great summaries of different methods for relieving/handling the pain. While they are not complete how-to chapters on the techniques' uses, it will help you know which are the best options for you so that you can then do more investigation elsewhere for details on the specifics of the techniques. It is well written and a great starting point.

Very simple and easy to read. I wasn't able to do a lamaze class and this helped me to prepare etc. It also helped me to feel more relaxed about the whole thought of labor and expectations. Everything went smoothly. I highly suggest this book for anyone and their first time.

Author is not to opinionated and I felt like I was getting really detailed, factual information on how to cope with labor. Very concise chapters on breathing, relaxation techniques, medications available, etc. I really liked it. It was exactly what I was looking for.

This was the book I was looking for. I wanted a book that gave you natural, alternative ways of coping with labor pain. This hit the nail on the head. Like other readers have said you got the facts without the bias. There were even sections on using medication as well as common interventions during labor. This was definitely worth the money and should be helpful to me during labor!

This book is wonderful! Adrienne Leiberman presents the information about natural childbirth in a realistic and down to earth manner. The book gives great detailed information about the entire process of birth in a factual manner without becomming too clinical. She gives easy to learn exercises in visualization and relaxation to manage and even lessen the pain of childbirth. Although it is evedent that she prefers a natural childbirth to one that uses medications for pain releif, she provides plenty of information about pain medications that may be available at the time of delivery. This book helped me gain the confidence I needed to give birth naturally by informing me about what was happening to my body throughout the process, why it is painful, and how to properly manage that pain and discomfort. Buy this book!

This book is a great option for those of you who want to make your own baby food. It takes you month by month through the child's life and offers suggestions for healthy family eating.
The portions are not super clear and the cooking times are sometimes way off, but otherwise this book is great.

Karin Knight's remarkable book is not just for babies. Her sound nutritional advice and delicious recipes are for everyone of any age. One of the most important things she's done is to distinguish between true food allergies (relatively rare) and food intolerances, something that many parents need advice on. The 5 sections of "1,2,3, Cook for Me," provide parents with essential knowledge about a child's nutritional needs from birth to 24 months and beyond, which foods are okay and which to avoid depending on the child's age, the benefits of making homemade food for your baby, a month-by-month feeding guide, and a toddler's month-by-month guide with recipes the whole family can enjoy. I wish we had this book when our own two sons were born. Now, our grandchildren are benefiting from Mrs. Knight's wisdom.

This year's book is much cheaper than many of the other coin price books for sale and includes up to date info (exept for recent mintage facts). If you collect coins, I would definently recomend this for your collection.

The editors of the Red Book hit the ball out of the park with this edition; Mr. Bressett deserves great praise for the dramatically improved layout and presentation. The quality of images is very high, and the ease of looking up information is vastly improved. While the advertisements I have bemoaned in the past are still present, in this edition I don't care - the quality of the improvements and overall book outshine the imperfections. If you haven't picked up a copy of the Red Book in a few years, I would definitely pick up this one, or (as of this writing), the soon-to-be-released 2007 edition.

This reader has an issue with a woman's whole body. In many birth books all you see is from the wasit down like the woman is not a whole person. When we focus on the whole picture (a womans torso, breasts and FACE!) we remember this isn't a birthing machine that needs fixing; this is a person, a woman, a mother.

GREAT book.......2007-05-09

I would recommend this book to anyone pursuing a natural birth. It helped me to understand many of the things that my midwife did, as well as to have faith in the strength of my body. Reading this before labor helped me to make it through 20 hours of back labor without even so much as an aspirin. I would highly recommend this book to parents-to-be!

More pronography then medical guidance.......2007-05-02

While certain anatomical photos are certainly necessary to help explain birth, this book goes way beyond medical visuals and seems to have gone out of its way to include pictures that border on pornography. There's even diagrams that were amended to include "details" clearly not necessary to serve as an effective visual aid. Moreover, why it is necessary to have so many waistup shots of women's breasts and pretty blatnat ones to boot when a baby comes out of the body waist below is beyond on us. We tried at first to ignore the pictures and read the book, but it just got so obscenre for us, we shelved it with plans to throw it away. Men buying Penthouse will definitely like this book!

Wonderful book.......2007-02-26

We have six healthy, intelligent and well adjusted children! The first two were born in the hospital with a CNM (certified Nurse Midwife). The next two were born at home with a PCM (professionally certified midwife) and the last two my husband and I delivered alone. The two books most helpful to us were this one and Special Delivery by Rahima Baldwin. It is informative, factual, and easy to read. If you need practical information as well as courage to birth at home, read this and your mind will be put at ease. You are not "crazy" to consider this option!

This is a beautiful book. Elizabeth's writing style is awesome. I have bought the book for my midwifery apprentice and she uses it in her classes and we use it as a reference book in our practice.

"Most complete biography on Scott Joplin".......2007-05-13

The reason I purchased this book was for my Jazz history class presentation on the 'King of Ragtime'. I could not find any recorded live performances by the classical ragtime composer because talking movies were not invented until 1920's long after his death in 1917. This book is just as good as recorded interviews from people who knew him as a friend, a composer, a performer, and a teacher. My teacher complimented me on my presentation for the interesting and valuable information I have shared with the class. This book contains speculations and contradicting facts about the composer. The author did a very diligent research on Joplin's life. It is an excellent book.

We have searched for biographies of Joplin to sell in our book shop at the Scott Joplin House SHS in St. Louis and Dr. Berlin's is great. He is the most thorough researcher we have come across in regards to Joplin. He is also a music historian and sometimes it is confusing for non-music people, but all in all you cannot beat the research and the information.

My review in two words: BUY IT.

This book is probably as thorough of a study into the life of Scott Joplin as is possible. Edward Berlin has obviously exhausted every resource available to him, and throughout, the book is well-noted - that is to say he gives credit to probably 99.9% of the sources of his information in the section for notes. Berlin has went through census records, newspapers, other books on ragtime, interviews with/statements given by numerous people affiliated with Scott Joplin and countless other sources for this book. This book is 99.9% true, solid facts; he seldom states a personal opinion, and when he does, it is made blatantly clear that that is what he is doing. This book also includes a listing of the complete known works of Scott Joplin, and the sheet music for the three songs "Good-bye Old Gal Good-bye", "Snoring Sampson" and "Lovin' Babe". (I would like to say in response to someone else's review that it is very difficult for me to see how the biography of a *musician* can be "interrupted" with music scores.)

Excellent Piece of Reporting and Scholarship.......2001-01-02

Despite years of detective work by musicologists, Joplin's life remains something of a 500-piece jigsaw puzzle with half the pieces missing. Berlin's work is the most coherent and robust work on Joplin's life to date, and barring some miraculous finding (such as the Sweatman files), it is likely to remain so for the foreseeable future. The depth of Berlin's reportage and the obvious breadth of his detective work (he's a superb "triangulator") give his assertions and educated guesses on Joplin's life, work and motivations far greater academic vailidity than that of many authors who have chased this musical ghost.

Great Book on Jewish Texans.......2001-04-30

This was an amazing book. I had never even heard of Texas Jewry, but this tought me so much about it. It was so interesting ,and I learned so much. I really recomend this for pleasure reading, or it could be very useful for projects or reports.
