Book Description
This first-person, emotional account of a child protection service worker in New York State gives the reader an intimate look at all aspects of handling child abuse cases: interviewing parents who have been accused of abusing their children, talking to abused children removed from their parents' guardianship, working with an uncaring system ironically designed with the best of intentions, and keeping up with the mounds of paperwork each case generates. Lucid and disturbing, eloquent and passionate, Tender Mercies is a must-read for professionals and laypeople alike!
Customer Reviews:
Pretty good but not for students.......2007-03-02
I gave this book 4 stars because it was a very good, easy read. The author did a great job, and Keith Richards does a good job of being honest about portraying the image of how the social workers real life is in this field. It doesn't give a lot of detail on the cases themselves and I wouldn't recommend it to students because it doesn't make the field sound too great. I'd recommend it to people just to enjoy but as far as case studies ..Nah. I think anyone could read this book. I wished it had more detail about the cases themselves though.
Still a pretty good read

Book Description
The founder of cognitive therapy and two colleagues apply the basic concepts of cognitive therapy, used successfully for many years in treating depression, to the treatment of anxiety disorders and phobias.
Customer Reviews:
Very insightful - for patients as well as therapists.......2007-09-12
I picked up this book years ago (before getting therapy for my own anxiety disorder) and quickly gained much insight into the many variants of phobia and anxiety disorders. The explanations are clear, allowing laypersons as well as experts a good level of understanding.
While the book is definitely geared toward therapists interested in learning Beck's cognitive therapy approach, it is certainly useful to any patient or relative who is confronted with such problems -- above all the first half of the book! I really appreciated not being talked down to as in so many patient-oriented books.
Beck opens with an overview of everyday experience of fear and anxiety. Next, he describes the adaptive purpose of anxiety responses ("fight or flight") putting anxiety disorders on a dimension with normal behavior. He continues on to discuss the difference between "normal" and "pathological" forms of anxiety, addressing the major symptoms and thought patterns associated with clinical forms. He then gives an overview of clinical anxiety disorders, including panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, atypical anxiety disorder, phobic disorders (of which there are many kinds), agoraphobia, social phobia and simple phobias.
He then presents his cognitive model of threat reactions and in-depth chapters focussing on anxiety disorder clusters ("Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Panic Disorder", "Simple Phobias", "The Agoraphobic Syndrome", and "The Evaluation Anxieties" social phobia and social anxiety). The second part of the book is devoted to his principles and strategies/techniques of cognitive-behavioral therapy.
The fact that new editions of this book have been published every few years over the past 2 decades is a tribute to its usefulness.
More for a Doctor than a Patient.......2006-12-14
If you want to know more about anxiety dissorders from a doctor's point of view this book is good, but as a patient it wasn't very helpful. It was more geared towards telling a doctor how to treat the patients, but to be honest I didn't finish it, it wasn't for me or what I was looking for.
Why congnitive therapy works........2005-07-17
I've always loved books about human behavior and this is one of the better ones. As other Amazon Customers have noted, the book is clearly written for medical professionals. The verbage is such that it is very obvious that the book is tuned toward those wishing to use cognitive therapy to treat patients. This was not a distraction at all. Even though I'm not a therapist myself, I found the book to be engaging and easy to understand.
The author makes the subject matter so readable and intriguing that I had trouble putting it down at nite. Some of the more fascinating chapters really pulled me in like an article from Discover magazine or some other science magazine might. This is a superb book.
The book discusses the etiology of anxiety in remarkable depth while not losing the reader with complex concepts. If you enjoy books on the human mind you will likely enjoy this. Anyone suffering from Anxiety or phobias and wanting to learn about the nature of their condition should read this book. It explains the behavior of anxious people without the condescending tone you may find in a book written for lay people. This book will give you an understanding of anxiety more clearly than any self help book could. I highly recomend this book.
Beck's Anxiety Disorders and Phobias - Cognitive Perspective.......2000-04-25
Every day, veterans of the Vietnam War commit suicide in deep depression. With the United States almost continually cutting its Veterans Administration budget, you would think that the V.A. would give up, but books like those of Beck help it treat and cure depression and anxiety. The Cognitive Therapy uses Socratic questioning, training people to ask why they feel sad or anxious, what their answers mean, to substitute more effective coping thoughts for ineffective thoughts and wrong ideas (illogical ideas, like "everybody is against me," "I'm born to fail," etc.). Patients record in diaries or logs what events trigger these wrong thoughts and learn to instantly respond with other thoughts and actions. This is one of the greatest books in psychology and psychiatry, and should be read by the young people of all ages (many of whom are depressed) as well as the older ones.
Interesting but intense.......1999-05-20
This book was an interesting book and, undoubtedly, an important book from the professional stand-point. However, from the layman's stand-point, I thought it was a little too intense. There were sections that I had to go back and reread several times in order to understand what the authors were trying to say. I think this was because I am a layman with only General Psych 101 as a background. I can not, however, speak as to its rating for a professional.

Customer Reviews:
Hysterical masterpiece.......2005-12-31
This book is disgustingly delicious. It is worth the price of the book just for the thought of mixing strawberry soda with malt liquer. This book is just plain funny. A great gift for people you like or dont like. If you have ever stopped at a convience store for any reason, this book is a must read.
Culinary Genius!! Save a space between Julia and Emeril .......2005-08-14
OK, say you're getting old and have been doing the low fat, fresh veggie diet for years. The days you made Fluffy Wuffy in your college dorm fade from memory. A supper of 'Fish Sticks Almondine' from this madly creative cookbook brings the days of your youth crashing back. Typical guest comment: "God, I forgot how much I love these things." And after the initial shock, they laugh hysterically and say pretty much the same thing about the updated vienna sausages in 'Poop on a Pringle.' The truly transcendent presentation is the spam and cheese 'Trojan Horse.' Serve it on your best silver tray and have a camera ready to catch your guest's expressions. Alone, they're well worth the price of the book!

Customer Reviews:
Great, Innovative Information.......2007-03-29
This book is a keeper! Sandra McCall has packed this book with wonderful projects. She has a keen eye for color and a style that is very inspiring. I found new techniques which I've never seen any place else, before, or even since reading this book. She tells of an easy way to quickly add sheen to beads without having to dip them into anything or even buffing. Quite a nifty time saver!
This was the first polymer clay book I bought, I had just gotten my info off the web sites, I'm so glad I bought it. I still pick it up often and get inspired to make more of the projects or try them in a new way.
The techniques and designs in the book are much more valuable than the cover price. My thanks to Sandra!!
Great combination! .......2007-02-13
This is an outstanding how-to of meshing stamping and polymer clay. I dabble in polymer clay bead making, but most if not all of the techniques in this book will apply or are adaptable to making beads. I find McCall's instructions to be thorough, photos explanatory and the projects to be creative and innovative. Bravo!
A combination of two favorites.......2007-01-10
This book combines two of my favoriate crafts and so must be a winner. It's good to see stamping used for something other than birthday cards and scrapbooks.
Great projects, but organization of the book needs work.......2006-06-04
Sandra McCall is one of my favorite artists. Her projects are beautiful, and she has a way of explaining techniques that is clear and concise. This book is fully in line with her style of work, and is a wonderful book for gaining inspiration. She uses a variety of techniques to achieve her looks, and her personal style adds a special touch to each project.
The reason I gave her 4 stars instead of 5 is what the book is missing. First, she showcases different techniques as a sampler at the front of the book, but the techniques are buried within projects rather than taught then applied to projects. This can be confusing for some people. For instance, one of the initial projects uses an ivory malachite as a decorative element; however, the technique for making the ivory malachite is shown later in the book. There's a lot of jumping around here.
Second, many of the projects include elements that she made using techniques showcased in the book, but NOT the exact method she used to achieve that particular sample. Being an instructor myself, I have found that some people will want to make the exact same project as my sample while others will want to take the technique and branch out with their own style. Sandra's project-oriented approach should allow for this, but by incorporating elements which were not included in the instruction, she will frustrate some readers.
Overall, I did like this book a great deal, and it is a welcome addition to my polymer clay library.

Good Reproducable Material for CBT Counseling.......2007-09-16
This is the workbook companion to the manual by the same author. The materials are well-designed and the directions for the children are clear. The drawings are pretty cute as well, which helps engage the child in the activities. This is a good start for a therapist's toolbox for CBT activities.
Book Description
Here is the quintessential Crosby tribute book at the dawn of his centenary May 3, 2003. The book documents the story of Bing's colorful life, family, recordings, radio and television shows, and films- a wondrous career that pioneered the art of popular crooning and of a man who kept America in perfect tune for many generations. His recording of White Christmas alone would have immortalized him. A must read book for Crosby fans everywhere who still cherish the music and anecdotes of the players involved in the Golden Age of popular music written by the author of The Spirit of Bob Hope and Jerry Vale-A Singer's Life.
Customer Reviews:
A "must-read" for the lingering legions of Bing Crosby fans.......2003-05-15
Richard Grudens' Bing Crosby: Crooner Of The Century is an impressive presented and informatively written tribute to the famous singer Bing Crosby, his varied and sometimes difficult life, his family, the success story of his singing and acting career, and the lasting cultural reflections of his work. Featuring an introduction by Bing Crosby's wife Kathryn Grant Crosby, Bing Crosby: Crooner Of The Century is a "must-read" for the lingering legions of Bing Crosby fans.
Great Buy.......2002-11-27
Richard Gruden's heartwarming tale of Bing Crosby's life story is one that will remain in my personal library of well-written biographies for a long time. From birth to death, Bing Crosby's life is passionately displayed through words and pictures alike. Crosby fans and those new to his world of musical talent will instantly be entranced by the smooth flow of the story. Finally! A biography about one of the world's most influential musicians that doesn't read like a textbook but rather like a tale that makes me want to read it again and again!
I applaud Grudens for a job well done. "Bing Crosby--Crooner of the Century" will surely be a favorite of those who know Bing Crosby and wish to know more. The story comes with my highest recommendation.

Russ Columbo and the Crooner Mystique
ASIN: 0810840812 |
Book Description
The Rise of the Crooners examines the historical trends and events that led to the emergence of the crooning style. The lives and careers of six pioneers of the style-Bing Crosby, Russ Columbo, Gene Austin, Rudy Vallee, Johnny Marvin, and Nick Lucas-are covered at length.
Customer Reviews:
Highlights Beginning of A Style.......2002-09-10
The authors bring to light the beginning of a style of singing made possible by the introduction of radio and the electric microphone. Separate from the shouting style of singing required by the acoustic horn phonograph and theatres with no amplification, the microphone allowed a more intimate soft style of singing. The book highlights the better known performers Bing Crosby, Rudy Vallee as well as informs on the forgotten performers Art Gillham, Jack Smith, Little Jack Little and others instrumental in developing the intimate crooning style.
Enhanced with up-to-date biographies.......2002-02-12
Crooning was a distinctive music performance style that came into prominence during the Big Band era of the 1930s and 40s. Successful crooners like Rudy Vallee and Frank Sinatra became icons of the "bobbysox" generation of teenagers. Established crooners like Bing Crosby and Tony Bennett had decades long careers that including radio, movies, and television. In The Rise Of The Crooner, music historian Michael R. Pitts and Drank W. Hoffmann (Professor of Library Science, Sam Houston State University) are ably assisted by Dick Carty and Jim Bedoian to present an articulate, scholarly, informative, and engaging historical treatise surveying the trends, fads, events, and personalities that created this popular form of American music and its lasting impact on popular American culture. The "reader friendly", 312 paged text is enhanced with up-to-date biographies, bibliographies, and discographies making The Rise Of The Crooners an enthusiastically recommended addition to any personal, professional, academic, or community library American music history collection.

Book Description
Around Jewish Art: A Dictionary of Painters, Sculptors, and Photographers is likely to serve as a resource and permanent fixture for art enthusiasts and scholars around the world. From photographers to painters to sculptors, this comprehensive biographical dictionary references thousands of artists, both Jewish and non-Jewish who, by their depiction of the Jewish experience in their art, have contributed to the advancement of the culture. Around Jewish Art contains a listing of 6,400 artists organized into five alphabetical sections: artists of Jewish lineage who have addressed Judaic and biblical themes, artists of non-Jewish lineage who also have worked with Judaic themes, non-Jewish artists who dealt with non-Judaic subjects, sculptors, and holocaust victims. Over five hundred of these artists are American. Entries are frequently accompanied by brief biographical sketches, and hundreds of examples illustrate the book. A supplementary price list accompanies it. Darmon also provides an insightful analysis of what constitutes Jewish art. According to the editor, not all Jewish art deals with overtly Judaic themes. He points out that many paintings by Jewish artists are infused with a feeling -- perhaps the result of a long history of religious persecution -- which all Jews directly or indirectly share. Indeed, Around Jewish Art is dedicated to those artists who died in the Holocaust and includes listings of more than 400 artists who were murdered in ghettos or Nazi concentration camps. Darmon's definitions will likely challenge readers' understanding of certain artists and their artistic contributions and place in history. In referencing thousands of broadly-defined Jewish artists -- including household names like Dali and Chagall along with lesser-known ones -- the editor touches on the very meaning of Jewish art and certainly its indelible impact on our world.
