Honest.......2002-04-24
Was I ever impressed with her genunine honesty, which is so lacking in the world today. This book is so insightful and emotional. It is more of a biography than a book about bulimia but I do recommed it. Leah let's people know her deepest thoughts and heartbreak. That takes courage.
lacking.......2002-04-20
I have both me Leah and read her book. I met her on two occasions at conferences I attended. I also read her book. The book does look into the horrors that I know are part of the struggle with the 'demon'. However, I question the sincerity in the author. Due to the reception I received from her at both encounters, I question the sincerity of her attempts and wonder if it isn't all a grasp at further fame.
An honest reflection from a wonderful person.......2001-02-22
Leah Hulan was my roommate at the 1994 Miss USA Pageant in South Padre, Texas (I was Miss North Dakota). The reflection and insight this book relects is real. Leah truly is a person we would all like to be like... and for her to have the courage and strength to share her story is a gift to the rest of us. The book is wonderfully written. This book would be helpful to anyone struggling with their own disease or for those knowing those who are.
Leah Hulan attacks the subject of eating disorders.......1999-11-07
I think this book is an excellent detail of how society puts pressures on young women to be beautiful and femimine, no matter how hurt and mistreated you are on the inside. Love yourselves, Eleni
This book tells of a horrifying disease in which many suffer.......1999-09-29
As I read this book I remembered my aspects of my own eating disorder. I felt as though demons had taken over my body and I had to fight them off. There were days that I was as normal as the next person, but then there were days that I could not remember even waking in the morning. I was in a treatment facility with Leah a few years ago. She seemed to have a grip on breaking the cycle. However, it can still be a struggle when times get rough. She bares all in this graphic tale of her life as she lived it. I admire her courage to re-live those years.

Fabulous.......2005-04-09
I have been using and buying this book since it was 1st published. I love it!
I'm an RN. I train non-professionals and family members on medications.
This is an invaluable tool!
The fact that it is in English (not technical words), explains medical jargon, uses, side effects, etc and catagories of real life situations, many people can relate.
I use it frequently.
Thank you for demystifing medications.

Informative and authoritative.......2000-11-19
This professional-looking hardcover is fairly small and not at all intimidating in appearance. Instead, the Reptile and Amphibian Problem Solver is a practical and readable reference for the beginner as well as an expert. A decent amount of space is allocated to selecting vivaria and substrates, creating an ambient atmosphere, and heating/lighting (although more information would be appreciated on the former, especially on the subject of keeping the vivarium cool, which is a constant challenge in the warmer climes). Reptile and amphibian care is listed separately. The entries are organized according to classification, similar species listed in a single group. Each entry is accompinied with brilliant photography, a Q&A section, and useful (although cluttered) rubrics concerning minimum vivarium dimensions, appropriate diets, temperature ranges, etc. Some entries also have breeding data rubrics. Common as well as fairly exotic species are covered (the book keeps an appropriately cautious tone when describing the exotics, which are likely to be captured in the wilderness and thus sometimes unsuitable for keeping). As an endorsement, I must say that after reading the Problem Solver I was confident enough to go and buy my first reptile.
exelent for reptile and amphibian keepers.......2000-06-06
I work in a large pet store and every day we have questions on reptiles and amphibians. Whenever I cannot answer the question, I go get this book from the shelf. Most of the time I find an answer in it. I find answers to almost Every question from "what should this animal eat" to "Help my animal is sick!" If you are a new reptile owner or just have questions, get this book.

Creating designs from nature!.......2003-08-02
The main concept here is for a beautiful creations that work well indoors or outdoors. Creations from nature, natural materials.
What makes this compilation of arrangements attractive is the muted tones, the subtle colors and textures. A certain color scheme is evident in this book with stunning designs.
You will learn how to make your designs, the correct tools and materials as the colorful pictures are very helpful.
An interesting idea taught here is to create arches, swags and garlands, for difficult areas, and by that, the author has decorated a fence post with a swag, or try a swag over the slats of a wooden chair, a wooden bench, anywhere that you can embellish an area. Branches, vines and driftwood designs serve as a great enhancement.
Also featured are instructions for topiaries, wreaths, centerpieces, etc. These steps are easy to follow with enough pictures for guidance.
The full-page color designs are impressive. MzRizz

Customer Reviews:
A must read for parents and teachers........2002-04-30
This book not only describes the symptoms of depression, but also gives parents a plan to "rescue" their children. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It is highly readable and understandable.
Sobering, powerful, and essential.......2001-08-10
The Depressed Child: A Parent's Guide To Rescuing Kids is a book written to empower parents who feel helpless in understanding the negative self-images and unhappy emotions that affect their children. Author Dr. Douglas Riley is a clinical psychologist who specializes in child and adolescent psychology, who has operated a private outpatient clinic since 1994; here, he presents parents with clear, detailed, easy-to-understand information about adolescent depression and what to do about it. Topics include how to overcome the "I'm inferior" myth; how to handle the "miniature marriage" phenomenon in teen dating relationships and providing consolation when these "marriages" fail; and how to evaluate and select from the methods to manage a child's depression. Sobering, powerful, and essential to understanding the mind of a depressed adolescent, The Depressed Child is highly recommended.
Finally, there is help!.......2001-03-10
As someone who has experience child and adolescent depression from both directions-having been a depressed child and the mother of a depressed adolescent-I couldn't stop my head from nodding in agreement with each "hopeless belief" Dr. Riley uncovered and addressed in his most recent book, The Depressed Child: A Parent's Guide for Rescuing Kids. I quietly folded the book back together after reading the last chapter, filled with a sense of relief. Finally, there is help out there!
With this book, Dr. Riley confirms the seriousness of a childhood problem often ignored and rarely understood by parents (and other adults responsible for the well-being of children). But, unlike other books written on this subject, he is not satisfied with simply bringing child and adolescent depression to a level of awareness. Instead, in a very calm yet firm, non-confrontational yet assertive tone, Dr. Riley insists that parents accept responsibility and take an active role in rescuing their children from depression. And just as clearly he provides them, in the form of "replacement beliefs," with the lifelines they need to do so.
While he acknowledges that chemical imbalances can cause depression, Dr. Riley's focus is on cognitive, or thought-based, depression. The book is organized around ten hopeless beliefs depressed children and adolescents often adopt about their selves and their lives. By using real-life examples from his years as a practicing child and adolescent psychologist, Dr. Riley is able to let the reader see not only the child's negative thought process in action but also how to challenge and restructure it.
Readers will not be turned off by any psycho-babble or professional jargon. Instead, this book is written clearly with the intended audience, concerned parents, in mind. References and examples are tangible, realistic and current. In fact, Dr. Riley has worked hard to relate to the current trends of the day by making numerous references and connections between good old-fashioned humanness and the age of technology, for example when he insists that "Fortunately, the brain can be reprogrammed."
It is with one of his references to technology, however, that I have my one complaint about this book. In mentioning sources available for readers who want information beyond the focus of his book, Dr. Riley suggests that any information acquired via any web site "should be read with a grain of salt." Certainly there are many, many web sites that should be discounted in terms of accuracy and believability; there are, however, effective ways to establish the credibility of the architect and information posted. The blessing of the Internet is that it has flung wide open doors that previously blocked information, knowledge and support from a huge segment of society and has piqued the curiosity and satisfied the needs of millions. As a matter a fact, I never would have known about Dr. Riley's book, if it wasn't for being "wired" - and for that matter, nor would this review exist without the aid of a web site. I certainly hope those who read this book review take what I have to say with much more than a grain of salt.
In his book, Dr. Riley states that childhood and adolescent depression is "the brain's attempt to get the conscious mind's attention." The Depressed Child: A Parent's Guide for Rescuing Kids is Dr. Riley's attempt to get the parents' attention. While the real value of this book comes to those who have a child already identified as being depressed (there is still a desparate need for a book that helps parents recognize early signs of depression), given the social climate of today it should be required reading for parents of all school-aged children.

Reflections on "Reflections".......2007-10-18
When this Book was published in 1976 it was Titled: "Reflections of a Rock Star. It cost a Whopping $3.99 and was printed by Flash Books. I was offered $120.00 for my copy by a Bookseller in San Francicso in 1998 and I promptly turned him down.
This 104 Page Book, documents Mott The Hoople's, First Tour of America as Headliners. It begins in England, on Tuesday Nov 21 and runs through to Dec 24 on the Plane that returned the band back to the UK.
Out of Several hundred Books I have read on Rock N' Roll, this would easily be in my Top-Ten of the Best Books on this Subject. Ian writes an honest account of the Tour, the Good as well as the Bad. A night in LA with Keith Moon & Frank Zappa. Hitting the pawn Shops for Guitars. Ian's, famous attempt to see Elvis (by Sneaking past the gates, all the way to the back door) and being told that Elvis was too tired to entertain guests by his Maid.
The Gigs [Good & Bad) are discussed, as are Bad Hotels/Motels. Too many hours in Airports (Mick Ralphs, had a Horrible fear of Flying}. And rare insight on Mott and many other Bands of this: "The All The Young Dudes" Tour. This is a rare peek into Their World, from their point-of-View.
Lot's of great photos are contained herein, and it's a great read with fantastic visuals. If I had One Wish, it would be that this Book SHOULD be longer, or the First of Many Volumes by Ian Hunter.
This is one of the finest Books on Rock ever. I have no plans to sell my Copy....FIVE STARS !!!
Diary of a Rock 'n' Roll Star.......2005-07-09
If you're looking for a great lierary work, Ian Hunter won't impress you. If you want to read a documentation of the early 70's world of Rock, this is right out of the trenches. What struck me early on was how grounded Hunter seems to be, or at least what he strives for. He's a rock star for 2 hours a day, then spends the rest of the time wondering if the light bill is paid at home, and if his car's been fixed properly. Like a pro athlete, you go at a music career like you know it's going to end. Hunter sees it coming, and was probably not surprised by the breakup of the band a couple years later. If Mott the Hoople's music was ever important to you, then get the book. It's like seeing an old friend again.
THAT '70S BAND.......2004-01-27
An unpretentious true 'diary' from 70's British glam rocker ( for want of a better description ), Ian Hunter of "Mott The Hoople" during his band's successful 1972 tour of the States. He reveals a historically fascinating 'behind the scenes' look at the rock and roll concert circuit of the early '70s, where in Hunter's humble view, sex, drugs, and rock and roll take a back seat to wry observations on American life, a compassion for music, and a compulsion for old guitars found in American junk shops. The reader goes along for the ride as Hunter and the rest of 'Mott The Hoople' tramp across America like kids in an amusement park. Personal revelations and run-ins with a host of rock and roll celebritys give this book an insider's edge and there is a rewarding final entry which finds Hunter questionably inside the high security gates of Elvis Presly's mansion, creeping about like the obsessed fan he reveals himself to be.
Simply the Best Rock Book Ever!.......2002-08-11
Ian Hunter proves himself to be one of the most articulate and intelligent personalities in rock in this diary of Mott's late '72 US tour in support of their All The Young Dudes album. It is a humble, egoless tale of the steps and stumbles of a band trying to break into the American market, lovingly and honestly told through the eyes of a young aspiring band leader. Refreshingly free of the self-cogradulatory tone of most autobiographies and the slathering praise of too many band books by fan-...-journalists, this modest (read: short) work starts and ends with the reader inside the day-to-day workings of a mid-level journeyman band, warts and all. Best of all (or, worst of all, depending upon your point of view), this isn't so much a book about Mott The Hoople and their music as it is a look at the human realities of what life on the road was like for the guys in the band, or most bands like them at that time. It captures perfectly the tone of the time and the atmosphere prevailing in the early '70's. It strips away the facades and breathes life into the rigors, rewards and frustrations of chasing the musical Holy Grail. I first bought this book in London in 1975, and have read and re-read it more times than I can remember. Raw, spontanious and unpretentious, it is funny, sad, touching and rewarding, especially with the hindsight of the band's history immediately after the end of the book. A must read for any music fan, and essential for any one who wishes to understand the period when the music became secondary to the business concerns. I love this book.
Just rock'n'roll.......2002-06-02
It's 1972. David Bowie pens 'All The Young Dudes' for Mott The Hoople, a British band on the verge of splitting up. The single becomes an enormous hit. Before embarking on a US tour that same year, Ian Hunter (Mott's lead vocalist) decides to keep a journal. The odyssey begins with him cleaning up after the cat and swilling a bottle of Medoc in preparation for his transatlantic flight to the USA. Over the next five weeks, he fends off the unwanted advances of groupies, hangs out with Zappa, Bowie and Keith Moon, searches pawn-shops for vintage guitars, and breaks into Graceland in hopes of meeting THE KING.
As Ian Hunter explains in his introduction, Diary was not "meant to have any literary merit, nor be a journalist's delight," rather it's intended as "a letter to a fan in the front row at the Rainbow...a buzz for the people who dig us." Diary is one of the most entertaining, candid insights into the rock'n'roll world you will ever read. Hunter comes off as neither world-weary, pretentious nor self-serving. Highly recommended for anyone who loves rock'n'roll, not just Mott fans.

Incisive Diary Clarifies Many Holocaust-Related Misconceptions.......2007-09-07
Abraham Lewin kept a diary from early 1942 through early 1943. He focused on the mass deportation of Warsaw's Jews to their deaths at Treblinka in mid-late 1942.
Lewin elaborates on the cooperation of Poles and Jews in the smuggling of food and other items into the Warsaw Ghetto, including the habit of the Polish Blue Police (Policja Granatowa) turning a blind eye to such smuggling (p. 62). He sided with those Jews who believed that Polish-Jewish relations had improved as a result of their common suffering (pp. 123-124). And, although Lewin mentions some examples of Poles denouncing fugitive Jews, he later makes it clear that Poles were not responsible for the roundup and extermination of Jews. For example: "Twenty Ukrainians, Jewish policemen (a few dozen) and a small number of Germans lead a crowd of 3,000 Jews to the slaughter." (p. 151).
In common with some other chroniclers, Lewin reserves his harshest criticism for the collaborationist Jewish ghetto police. For example: "Russian pogromists would have been unable to make a more thorough and shattering pogrom than that carried out by the Jewish police." (p. 160). "Today, the Jewish police carried out the `action' with savage brutality. They simply ran riot." (p. 164).
Some recent Holocaust materials have included the totally preposterous suggestion that the Poles somehow consented to the extermination of the Jews on their soil, or that Polish protests may have saved the Jews. In actuality, the Germans had not the slightest concern about the wishes of the Polish untermenschen. A protest was a form of suicide, as Lewin relates: "A Christian woman on Leszno Street, seeing the wagons with those who have been rounded up, curses the Germans. She presents her chest and is shot. On Nowy Swiat, a Christian woman stands defiantly, kneels on the pavement and prays to God to turn his sword against the executioners--she had seen how a gendarme killed a Jewish boy." (p. 141)
Although Jews and Poles may have been "unequal victims", Lewin doesn't neglect the latter: "Let us not forget: the Poles are in second place in the table of tragic losses among the nations, just behind the Jews. They have given, after us, the greatest number of victims to the Gestapo, and this does not take into account the destruction of the country." (p. 124). "Jewish and Polish blood is spilled, it mingles together and, crying to the heavens, it demands revenge!" (p. 125).
Lewin mentions the German "action" against the rural Poles in the Zamosc region (p. 227), and comments: "In fact, there are reports of unrest and turmoil among the Poles over the mass-expulsions of Poles in the Zamosc area." (p. 233). Lewin had no illusions as to what the Germans were capable of: "They began with us and will finish with other peoples: Poles, Czechs, Serbs and many others." (p. 239).
In the 19th century, Polish mystic Andrzej Towianski thought of the Polish people as the "Jesus Christ of Nations", whose sufferings would save the world (p. 264). But Poles were not alone in such musings. Interestingly, Lewin wrote of his entertaining of Towianski-like thoughts about the Jewish people (p. 117).
A Strikingly-Balanced Eyewitness Account of German Crimes.......2001-08-31
Abraham Lewin, the author, is a Jewish eyewitness of events the Warsaw Ghetto. His narratives are in striking contrast to most popular-level Holocaust materials, which portray Poles in a unilaterally negative light while also completely ignoring the negative aspects of Jewish behavior. Lewin, for instance, focuses on the marked depravity of the Jewish collaborators, especially the Jewish ghetto police, and strongly condemns them for helping send then-200,000 Jews to their deaths. Lewin demonstrates, with examples, that large-scale Polish behavior of helping Jews far exceeded the few Poles who harmed Jews. And, despite observing the sufferings and deaths of his fellow Jews firsthand, Lewin refrains from a purely Judeo-centric approach to the Holocaust. In several places in his narratives, he speaks of German crimes against Polish gentiles. In particular, he discusses the widespread German terror (murders of Polish gentiles, and the destruction of Polish villages) in the Zamosc region. He even acknowledges that, after the Jews, Poles were in second place as victims of the Nazi Germans. He concludes: "Jewish and Polish blood is spilled, it mingles together and, crying to the heavens, it demands revenge!"
I only wish that modern approaches to Holocaust education displayed the same attitude, and balance, that Lewin did.
