The text is well written though the organization of the material leaves a bit to be desired. It covers a large body of information about massage therapy, acupuncture and AMMA well though it could be better indexed. The subject by definition follows the flow of nature while the text does not. The structure of the chapters could have a more evolving continuity. As an example point information is distributed throughout the text without an area for general overview. Masters can use this for reference well but beginners are at a loss to find the "meridians" connecting chapter to chapter. I look forward to the next edition.

An Amazing Book for the Oriental Bodywork Therapist.......2000-01-31

Of course I'm prejudice because of this is the text for ourschool [online] but this book that explainsthe complex style of Amma is an amazing reference for just about anyone interested in hands on techniques in Oriental Bodywork Therapy. Channel location, diagnosis , actual technique patterns etc are contained in this ancient technique Mrs Sohn brought to America years ago. And the price discount at Amazon.com is pretty amazing as well.

Lovely watercolor illustrations compliment the fresh ideas from author Rick Rodgers. Careful, detailed instructions help the even the novice host plan and execute the perfect tea party baby shower. This is the one to own if you need to know what guns are worth. I collect guns that are in date, no antiques or just old, and this book shows me what I need to know about them. Prices seem to as close as possible to what the market is trying to get for them. All the firearms I needed to know about were in here with picture as well as description. I have the Shooters Bible and The Gun Trader which are good but not as much info as Standard Catalog of Firearms.

Great For Everything!.......2000-09-16

I bought this book because I wanted to transfer the pictures on to fabric so I could do needle work with them. I found about 100 other uses as well. The Pictures were very clear and had bold lines that made it easy to see when tranfered. The faries themselves were very pretty, and even though there were about 50-75 different fairies, they all seemed to have their own personality. I found I was able to use them on fabric, wood, and even on my wall! I transfered some to my wall to make a mural and it worked great! You can use each picture more then once, but I found that the image started to fade, and it's best if only used once or twice. They would make very cute t-shirts if you wanted to transfer them, and then paint it. I can't think of anything you couldn't use them for, as it says in the book, transfers to anything that can absorb ink!

Vital info.......2005-07-14

Well I totally disagree with the previous reviewer. I think it is interesting to know, for instance, about John and Stuart's intimate relationship, and all the historical factual material that is in the book, including photographs. I also think it is vital to know about the uncertainty and bouts of aggression that John had, also in relation to his feelings for Stuart. And the suggested relationship between this and Stu's untimely death is interesting, to say the least.
I'm not a big reader, who is these days, but this is one of the rare books I read in one go. Because of the suspense, the verifiable facts, the background, and the human factor that shimmers through the story between the lines, as it does in good work.

"The Beatles' Shadow".......2003-08-13

I became interested in Sutcliffe several years ago when some documentary on PBS was aired, around the time Backbeat was in theatres. His art, his looks, immediately captivated me, and I had wanted to learn more about him. There weren't any books, and the only way you could read about him was through Beatles books rather than a stand-alone, and I wasn't interested in that. So, my interest in Sutcliffe's life fell to the backburner. Until recently, when I saw this book was going to be published in paperback.

Written by his sister, it's advertised as a biography, but is clearly a memoir. To me, a biography is researched extensively with quotes from letters, interviews from friends and associates and whatnot. Not rememberances of how cool it was to have a Teddy boy ask you to dance at one of your brother's early gigs in Liverpool.

That's problem number one with the book. Problem number two is apparently Pauline Sutcliffe is a psychotherapist who is smitten with analyzing her brother and John's life based on 40 year old memories, clearly prejudiced by time and death. And to make it worse, she's Freudian. Witness this line she wrote about her brother's relationship (she, as well as other biographers, assume that there was a sexual relationship between John and Stuart):

"The origins of male homosexuality are supposed to be tied up with the relationship between boys and their fathers. Or the failure of that relationship in some way, or the boys picking up some ambivalence in their fathers and all sorts of messages. I am not convinced about such theories, but let's characterize John as a boy looking for a father's love.[...]"

Here's what I knew about Stu before reading this book:

Jacob Katz (1904-1998) may well be the greatest historian of Judaism and the Jewish people of the twentieth century. In a series of pathbreaking studies, including TRADITION AND CRISIS, EXCLUSIVENESS AND TOLERANCE, OUT OF THE GHETTO, and FROM PREJUDICE TO DESTRUCTION, Katz reshaped the study of Jewish history from late medieval times through the horrors of the mid-twentieth century.

It is a great shame that Katz's work, which is as valuable in terms of historical method as it is for its specialized content, is not better known to historians generally. In this, his last book (originally published in Hebrew in 1989 and translated into English in 1995), Katz reflects on his life and his development as an historian.

Most of this book's twelve chapters focus on the odyssey of an intelligent, sensitive, and modest young man who seeks a place for himself, first within the sheltered Jewish community in Hungary where he was born; next in the turbulent and shifting Europe in which Jews tried to chart a course between their traditions of religious devotion and Talmudic study and the world of secular knowledge; then in the terrifying world of the impending Nazi domination of Germany and then of the European continent; and finally in the struggles to build a new nation in the land of Israel.

Throughout, Katz writes with modesty and quiet humor and rare generosity. Gradually, his life as a scholar assumes a more and more central place in his life's story -- but Katz excels at showing the intertwining of his intellectual life with his biography. By the book's close, you know that you have been in the presence of "one of the rare and master spirits of the age."
