AUTHORBIO: VICKIE L. BANE is a special correspondent for People magazine and the co-author of The Lives of Danielle Steel. She lives with her husband and two sons in Colorado.

Not a nice person.......2007-03-03
As I was reading this book, I kept asking myself "Who is the worse woman: Laura Schlessinger or Martha Stewart?" I still haven't answered that question.
Laura had no close friends, had almost a non-existent relationship with her parents and siblings, and she had her mousey husband constantly stiff people. Although Laura proclaims she didn't work when she was raising her son, she in fact did work at radio stations in his very young years (1-3).
Dr. Laura is a very controlling person, but should be very grateful to people who assisted her in her career but isn't. She did everything she could to sabotage the career of another radio personality (person & station forgotten at the moment) when she was her co-worker. Laura wasn't very professional, as she was too chummy with her patients and used them for her own personal use.
Dr. Laura's female fans will no doubt dismiss the book and her critics and those who are neutral about her will probably enjoy the book. Similar to Martha Stewart in that Martha's fans thought that she got the shaft in her criminal sentence, and those who hated her or were neutral thought that she got off too easy.
Informative and Rather Entertaining Biography of a Sociopath.......2004-08-05
I enjoyed this book for giving the history of Dr. Laura which she of course never references while telling others that they are wrong for the mistakes they make. Dr. Laura made the same "mistakes" or were they "on-purposes"? Having her tubal ligation reversed in order to become pregnant by a married man was an extremely manipulative act. And it seems that Dr. Laura has remained manipulative, not to mention sadistic, to the present time. What she did to Dr. Barbara DeAngelis (having the nerve to claim that her psychology degree was bogus, when Dr. Laura's OWN degree is in physiology, NOT psychology) is downright bizarre, yet she got away with it. Her audiences must consist only of masochistic idiots who believe that they deserve to be called stupid by a woman who doesn't practice what she preaches. Scary that there are so many morons out there trusting in a woman pretending to be something she's not.
Fair, meticulous--needs an update.......2004-04-02
I've always been fascinated by people who move to California to "become" what they felt they couldn't back in their home town. Those who set out to reinvent themselves seldom fully succeed--and proof positive of this fact is Dr. Laura Schlessinger. Vickie L. Bane interviewed a great many people and carefully researched other press and anecdotal accounts of Schlessinger's rise to radio stardom.
The picture isn't pretty, and time after time, Dr. Laura's own life completely refutes the ideas that she presses forcefully on her callers to her radio programs, some of whom appear acutely masochistic, if not unrealistic to believe that they can "fix" what ails them in a three-minute phone chat, often laced with sarcasm, hostility or even abuse from Dr. Laura.
Dr. Laura doesn't believe in divorce, pre- or extramarital sex, or writing off one's family members, and yet she has done every one of those things: She became estranged from her father, mother, and younger sister. She dumped the nice Jewish orthodontist she married and never mentions. She engaged in an enthusiastic affair with Los Angeles radio legend Bill Ballance (who speaks very candidly with Bane), who helped her get into radio. Dr. Laura lured her current husband, Lew Bishop, away from his wife and three children, had her tubal ligation reversed in order to conceive out of wedlock. Eventually she and Bishop married and produced a child as goopily extolled (and, to my mind, as exploited) as Kathie Lee Gifford's kids Cody and Cassidy. Child of a Jewish father and Catholic mother, Dr. Laura converted to Orthodox Judaism, a choice that she uses as a bludgeon to people that she perceives as less "committed" to her brand of situational morality.
Bane neatly debunks Dr. Laura's "I'm My Kid's [Full-Time] Mom" shtick by documenting how and when Laura returned to work after her son's birth. As a child, Deryk ran wild in the hallways of KFI. For quite awhile, Dr. Laura used her visibility as a radio shrink as bait for prospective patients, one of whom details a disturbing breach of professional ethics, that of respecting strict boundaries of behavior between therapist and client. This former client was also a "friend" to Dr. Laura, and went shopping and lunching with her, as well as babysitting for Deryk.
This book, though complete as is, would benefit from an update with events that also reflect upon Dr. Laura's post-publication life--such as the failure of Dr. Laura's television show, her defection from Orthodox Judaism, and the fact that her mother, to whom Laura had not spoken for years, died alone in her apartment in Beverly Hills and wasn't found for days.
Isn't it funny-peculiar how right-leaning cheerleaders for their own definition of morality extend the statute of limitations on their own personal "youthful indiscretions" well into their forties? Schlessinger is no exception(...)
A One-Time Fan.......2004-02-09
Initially, when Dr. Laura first came to prominence, I was very much in favor of her no-nonsense, take full responsibility message. I have read one of her early books and a fair number of her other writings, so I can definitely say I'm familiar with both sides of this story. I generally avoid these tell all "unauthorized" biographies as they tend to be salacious, sensationalized, mean-spirited, and overtly one sided against whoever the subject matter is about. I did not find this to be true with this book (surprising, considering the author writes for People, not the most highbrow publication out there)! Any dirt slinging or positive comments for that matter, are done by people who know or worked with Dr. Laura, not by the author, who simply reports it, and I felt, let the reader make of it what they would. Adding to the credibility of the sources is that most of them are quoted by name and specific circumstances, dates, etc., with the obvious exceptions of former patients. I won't bother wasting space extolling the examples of hypocrisy, nastiness, and other little known facts you'll discover here. I imagine if you're researching this book, you've already figured out on your own, like myself, that Dr. Laura is not the paragon of virtue she originally seemed to be.
A blockbuster in '98, now woefully out of date.......2003-11-03
When this book was written, Dr. Laura was a rising radio star. Schlessinger's show was still on its way to a zenith of 470 radio stations across the United States and Canada. Controversies had erupted here and there, but nothing that stayed on national radar. The only place those sorts of things were discussed was the Usenet newsgroup alt.radio.talk.dr-laura (still going strong after 7 years). Leslie Bennetts had written a critical piece in Vanity Fair, and other cover stories also raised eyebrows with suggestions that the Queen of Preach, Teach, and Nag did not Do As She Said.
The Bane bio, written without any contact with Schlessinger or her husband, brought in all this backstory. Bane met with plenty of Schlessinger's former colleagues who were willing to complain about their run-ins with Schlessinger. The result paints a very disturbing picture of the woman who had the second biggest radio audience after Rush Limbaugh. Read the book for some fascinating insight into Dr. Laura Schlessinger, but realize that the juiciest bits happened well after the book went to press.

Magical Mind, Magical Body.......2007-04-06
This is a must have in the collection for antone who is on the continuous journey of self growth.
Very Good...BUT.......2007-01-18
This audio book is a must hearing for everyone who seeks health.
But it's missing the written manual. and in the audio he is always referring to it!!
Why?
Get Your Mind In Touch With Your Body.......2006-12-14
Chopra offers many profound insights here about the body's relation to the mind. He identifies the three main personality groups and the reader is instructed to choose which one best describes him/her. From there, he tells what kind of food, music, activities, etc the person may be drawn to. Most of these are accurate observations and, while everyone may not agree with all of his suggestions, there are many things here you can do to reach your optimum health and potential.
Among my favorite parts are:
1) The kinds of foods that satisfy cravings. The different personalities require different things to satisfy their hunger cravings. Some may require bitter foods while others need sweet foods or pickles. This can help cut back on overeating and help you lose weight.
2) Wait five minutes after you eat before you go back for more. This helps the food settle and also cuts back on overeating.
3) Dealing with emotions. Anger and rage can effect your health. He gives exercises in which you can identify the feelings and make them go away.
There are several more subjects he covers. Some are a little out there. For instance, he suggests food has a better effect on the body if you eat in complete silence and think about nothing but you eat while you are doing so. Good luck with that if you eat in restaurants or with friends or family... Overall, he makes many good points. Some things I knew all along but never put conscious thought to, which proves his point that the body and the mind are connected and the body thinks and feels just as much as the mind. He also narrates the audiobook himself. I don't usually read self help books, but this one was worth the time and money. I'll definitely read more of his work.

Don't waste your money.......2006-02-23
I hated it! I opened it once read through it and closed it forever. There are foods that I have never heard of before, and most everything is measured in grams. That is not how we do thing here in america. Next to the grams were oz. more like it, but, who in their rigfht mind is going to measure food for toddlers by the ounces and have time!! I just wanted something simple like things I can throw together to make my life easier and my kids healthier, you won't find it here. Title is great thats all!
Disappointing.......2005-10-23
I bought this book to help me provide healthy, fun and good tasting finger foods for my 1 year old. The recipes seem to be geared more for older toddlers, and not for "babies." I expected there to be at least one recipe for babies, since the title indicated as such. I am very disappointed.

I have been breeding Boxers for over 15 years and I only give out this boxer book to clients. It is written by a man who knows and lives with boxers and has for many years. He breeds and shows and has a great record and reputation. I tell all my clients that this is the only boxer book they will ever need.
Nice book for boxer novices.......2001-06-30
Our family was looking into the breed to research if Boxers were for us. This book was helpful and the information was clear. I also ordered Boxers - A complete Pet Owner's Manual by BARRONS. When both arrived together in the mail I was more inclined to pick up the book by Barrons first. The photos were more inticing and the layout and text was less inhibiting. I found myself picking up the book by Richard Tomita after I completed Barrons book. I would have to say I gathered information from both. If I could only select one - I would select Barrons.
Every Person owned by a Boxer should own this book........1999-06-02
This book, having been written by a breeder, tells you alot about the breed. It is full of valuable information, that can be used everyday. The pictures are great, along with the complete background about the breed. Thanks for a wonderful book.

Customer Reviews:
pretty generic.......2004-02-24
I got this book used so it wasn't a big deal, but only the first half deals with boxers. The second half is a comprehensive training, health, and general care section for dogs. Only problem is there are hundreds of pictures, but not of Boxers! Boxers have their own training and health problems that this book didn't cover. I think if the info was going to be generic there should have at least been pictures of Boxers throughout. Worth the used price though.
Are you a Boxer fanatic?.......2003-01-23
I am. I read this book before my Boxer, Bubba, was born. Author Stephanie Abraham has bred boxers for 33 years. She has also been a judge for 21 years and is on the Board of Directors of the ABC. This book covers total care basics (i.e., feeding, grooming, health) and specific Boxer traits, training and a chapter by a Dog Fancy columnist. Includes list of recommended reading and resources.
Good for beginners, like myself.......1999-06-22
This is a great book for beginners, like me! I'm probablly going to buy a boxers soon and it was very good with the basics. Of course, this book is in the favor of the Boxer and does not have many cons about buying a Boxer. Very good to get to know the breed though.
A good book for someone wishing to learn the basics.......1998-10-04
I read this book in a little over 2 hours and found it to be well written and informative, especially since I've never owned a dog. It gives you insite into this breed and simple instructions on care and training.
A good book for general information........1998-08-25
This is a good book for someone who is not really familiar with Boxers and wants basic information. For someone who is already a Boxer fan, something a little more substantial is in order.

What most men need to know.......2007-04-07
This book is just full of good information you need to know but aren't taught anywhere. I'm a man and I know that I look and feel more confident when I look as good as I can. This book tells you how to do that and it's practical too...not flashy - just classy. It's nice to know that my favorite shirts are broadcloth material - I now look for them in the stores or online. That standard shoes should include loafers, boots and a pair of wing tips - none of which I had before - but I do now - and they look great. That you should pay attention to the watch you wear - because others do. That you should wash your face twice a day, that you should shave after the shower so the room is steamy...If you are wanting to change your image to one of a well groomed, well dressed man, reading this book is a great start.
The must-have book for any man!.......2006-05-16
This book is designed to enable the caring woman to take charge of the dressing of the man in her life, and make him over. Filled with excellent pictures and tons of sage advice, this book covers everything from shoes to suit coats (no one wears hats anymore, apparently), and everything down to underwear and cufflinks, and even grooming tips. This is the must-have book for any man!
Let me just say that I found this to be a great book. Now, I am not a woman, but in truth a man can benefit enormously from reading this book. I found this book to be very informative, both in its broad outlines and in its details. I think that this is a great book, and I highly recommend it!
A whole new look..........2003-05-03
MAKE OVER YOUR MAN is a beautiful instructional book guiding women on how to dressing the men in their lives. The intent of the book is to take the average boring wardrobe and transform it into a whole new look bringing out the best in your man. It covers every wardrobe imaginable, even down to the basics, and offers tips on things such as manicures and pedicures, organizing a man's closet, and how to tie a perfect tie. Chapter by chapter, the book offers tips, instructions, charts, photographs and even one-on-one celebrity makeovers to give you all the tools necessary to arm yourself against readying your man for a whole new look. Some of the celebrity makeovers include Tyra Banks and her dad Don Banks, Patti LaBelle and her son Zuri Edwards, and Star Jones with three male friends.
I'd recommend this book to both men and women as a "must have book" that details fashion in a way that isn't boring, but instead colorful, fun, and takes the work out of convincing the guy in your life that a change is needed. The photography helps this book stand out from others sitting on the shelves.

Fashion Bible for a "Lost" Soul.......2003-01-20
When I heard that your second book was coming out, I was so overjoyed. I just finished reading it on yesterday and wanted to write just to say thank you! You are definitely a God-send. I want you to know that your material and advice has helped cultivate who I have become in terms of my appearance. I didn't come from a "rich" background, from childhood I always dreamed that after I got my education, I wanted to have the appearance of all of those I had admired through the years. Your book has and will help me make the right decisions in regard to what to wear, when to wear, how to wear. I have just moved to a metropolitan area and "image is everything." I am so self-concious at times because I am from Oklahoma and we don't know the first thing about dressing. Moving, I feel so countrified when I go out, I never know if I am fitting in or not. Thanks for the time and effort you put in to helping "brothers" out on what they need to do. "Make Over Your Man," has helped me achieve an inspiration and confidence I need to continue to assert myself. Kudos to you!
Best of it kind.......2002-12-28
I bought this for myself (I am a man) because I saw excerpts on msn and I thought the writing style was excellent. The book did not disappoint. It reads well, has a lot of nice photos and a listing of merchants in the back. I would not follow the author's advice to the letter, because we all have different styles, but I picked up a lot of helpful information. Although I have always enjoyed shopping for clothes, I ended up with too many clothes, rather than just enough high quality items. I do think the book will have to come out every two or three years with new editions as styles change. For instance, Boston now champions flat front pants instead of pleats and leather soles rather than rubber. In general, he laments dressing down or "business casual." These things change, although he definitely stays away from trendy fashions in favor of more traditional garb. A thoroughly enjoyable and well-written book.

Book Description
We're all interested in living a long life, but few of us are willing to sacrifice everything to attain that longevity. After all, what good is living an additional decade at the expense of enjoying the previous ones?
In this remarkable book, Dr. Zorba Paster -- host of the public radio show
Zorba Paster On Your Health -- takes a detour from the traditional negative, abstinent approach that addresses only physical factors. Instead, Dr. Zorba introduces us to the five "spheres of wellness" that encompass all aspects of life: the physical, of course, but also the mental, kinshipsocial, spiritual, and material spheres. He reveals well-documented research that indicates that you must address and balance all of these areas, and not just the physical, to achieve optimal longevity -- and also your greatest enjoyment of that longevity.
Within each sphere, Dr. Zorba pinpoints the most threatening "busters" -- those lifestyle aspects that will, sooner or later, kill you. And for each buster, he recommends the most advantageous "boosters" -- habits that will counteract the buster and extend your life. Many of these boosters will come as a complete surprise. For example, even the most diet-conscious, performance-oriented athlete may be at risk for heart disease and stroke by ignoring all the other spheres: mentally, with chronic depression; socially, with limited, distant relationships; spiritually, with an uncaring attitude; and materially, with an unsatisfying, underappre-ciated job.
To tailor this remarkable booster-and-buster system to you, The Longevity Code includes in-depth exercises to isolate your most urgent needs. Once you've identified the busters you must overcome, you can clip out the booster cards -- summaries of each of the 76 boosters -- to help you focus on your personal prescription for living a longer, sweeter life.

Longevity is determined by more than a good diet, low cholesterol levels, exercise, good genes, and avoidance of smoking, says Zorba Paster, M.D., an instructor at the University of Wisconsin Medical School and family medicine practitioner. (His call-in radio program, Zorba Paster on Your Health, is heard on National Public Radio.) "Just as critical are how much you like your job, whether you have a good or rotten relationship with your parents and children, what sort of friendships you have, whether you're depressed or happy, angry or delighted, abusive or kindhearted." In The Longevity Code, Paster explains the five "spheres of wellness": physical, mental, kinship (family and social), spiritual, and material (meaningful work, sufficient money, safe and pleasing surroundings). If you have balance and good health in all five spheres, says Paster, you'll live longer.
Not every "longevity booster" is right for everybody, so Paster uses self-tests, fill-in charts, activity suggestions, and plenty of anecdotes to help you develop your own individualized plan. Then he offers 76 "boosters": steps that you can take to increase your longevity. Some are simple to put into action immediately, such as "own a pet," "drink plenty of water," and "take care of your teeth and gums." Others, however, take a great deal more effort and commitment, such as "reduce air pollution, radon, and indoor toxins," "don't live in a violent environment," and "cultivate a resilient, optimistic, can-do attitude." Paster offers tips to get you started on each one that you choose. --Joan Price

Wonderful for someone wanting to make lifestyle changes........2001-05-09
Just under 400 pages the book covers topics like cracking the code and identifying the factors that contribute to or threaten your longevity. FInding your personal longevity prescription and his own guide to the 76 most effective longevity boosters.... . Common sense suggestions that may sound easy but anyone who knows the statistics knows that he makes sense and that sadly too many people dont follow the advise.
He covers issues like getting out of abusive an relationship and a negative job environment and much of what he has in the book has been covered in a vast number of other books and magazines, and even on TV.
But for someone who doesn't read alot of books on making lifestyle changes this is one that will probably have in it, the information that one might need 5-6 other books to cover.
It is a great book for the person who has never made positive lifestyle choices and needs a book that will cover all the bases.
A full life is more important than a low cholesterol!.......2001-03-19
If Zorba the Greek had been a doctor, then this is the book he would have written! I really liked it.
Dr. Zorba's main point, just like the Greek's, is that there's more to life than simply good cholesterol and a low blood pressure. It's not that these strictly medical points are unimportant, it's just that the other areas in one's world can be just as significant, if not more so, in making life long.....and sweet. Dr. Zorba divides life into five interconnected spheres: physical, mental, kinship/social, spiritual and material (financial and job-related.) In each of these spheres readers are encouraged to find their own personal strengths and weaknesses. The book has a series of fill-in-the-blank charts and lists to help you personalize this information. There is a set of cards in the book's center with which can be used for "Playing the hand you're dealt." The game is to arrange you longevity "boosters" and "busters" into some kind of order, discarding the ones that don't count for your specific genetics and lifestyle, and then to work on the ones that define your own unique longevity "game." It may be a little hokey, but I got a lot of good ideas for myself out of it.
What I really enjoyed about the book, though, were the stories. Just as things would start to get a little dull, the good doctor would tell a little tale about one of his own patients to make the point. I particularly liked the one about "Ralph," whose two-month ride up to Alaska on a Harley did more good for his good health and longevity than all the standard medical advice he'd been given before it. This was true despite the fact that motorcycle riding is "dangerous," if looked at out of context. Although riding a motorcycle may worsen your odds in the strictly physical sphere, it may actually boost your overall life expectancy when the mental, social and even spiritual spheres of the experience are included. In fact, motorcycling your way to a long life has a kind of Zen feeling about it, especially when you include the bike maintenance.
This actually seems relevant, by the way, given the book's unexpected introduction by the Dalai Lama.
Anyway, "The Longevity Code" seems like a well-balanced book, written by a natural storyteller whose advice is backed up by scientific evidence and clarified by examples from his life as an actual family doctor. I was surprised how much I really liked it.

I am almost done with it and I LOVE IT!.......2007-04-12
I will forget half the book if I don't write down my review first. I love Nick Drake and his music is a hard pill to swallow for some, but the poor thing had so much going for him and the company he kept was unreal!! You really get a view into the man's music and how the people about him got frustrated by his shyness and reclusive nature. He played for The Stones (at a dinner table) he hung with Winwood's brother, had Richard Thompson on his records, he traveled Europe-UGH!
But as you read it the realization of how he brought up (English style), how he was perceived is exactly how he re acted to those around him. Painfully shy and aloof...If he had been properly diagnosed with his depression early on, I think he would been a lot more popular.
But like most artists, a dead one is a good one...I loved it...it was a good read.
the 2nd book of nick.......2007-01-19
While it has been compared to Patrick Humphries scholarly biography, for not having revealed new insight, it does act as a worthy companion. Especially for Drake'o'philes. Much like his posthumous recordings, they are not definitive, but every new little artifact helps piece a bit more of this man's remarkable (and very short) career together.
Easy to read, but tinged w/some speculation.......2006-11-05
Dann's writing style makes this book perhaps more user friendly than Humphries. I enjoyed the book, with the exception of some speculative aspects, especially concerning possible childhood abuse and his characterization of Nick as a much heavier drug user than the majority of the sources suggest. All evidence available points to a loving family, with a sister still dedicated to preserving her brother's legacy to this day. It could be easy to see how a Father hoping his son would become a doctor or engineer like himself might be disappointed with a musical career choice, but there is nothing to indicate anything untoward. Had there been, perhaps Nick would have gone to live with good friend Billy Squier, rather than go home to Far Leys towards the end. The book is easy to read and with a more streamlined approach than Humphries, with all it's information on the music scene in London in the late 60's. But then, Humphries didn't go to Cambridge as a student and request Nick's old room number, as Dann evidently did. Both books together dovetail nicely, but in Joe Boyd's brief chapters on Nick in White Bicyles, the man came alive more than in either of these two books.
Definitive, well written and authoratative.......2006-04-05
This book is a real achievement. Trevor Dann has done what no one has done before for Nick Drake. Based upon extensive research and careful reconstruction of known data Dann has put together a coherent description of Nick's childhood, school years, recording years and final decline. Important new facts were uncovered, many of which were crucial to the assembly of a coherent understanding of Nick's life, music and death.
I never understood how someone with such talent, from a background of such privilege and from a much touted loving home found so little solace, in the love and support that family provided when he was depressed because his records didn't sell. Now I believe I understand.
Questions about his sexual orientation are answered from new interviews, in the words of many people who knew him.
In short, after reading this book, all of the remaining questions that I had regarding Nick have been answered, and what is more, the answers "feel right".
The book is also a wonderful read. It is very well written, and each sentence is packed with information. There is no sense of things having been added as filler. All such supporting materials are put in appendices at the back of the book. This is an extraordinary first book for Dann, tackling a difficult subject, three decades after Drake's death; it surely is an excellent example of careful, respectful, forensic research, that comes off both literate and authoritative.
Book Description
Nick Drake was barely 26 years old when he died in 1974 following an accidental overdose of prescribed drugs. The British singer-songwriter made only three albums during his short life - Five Leaves Left, Bryter Layter and Pink Moon. All are now recognized as classics.
Since his death, Nick has been cited as a seminal influence by stars as diverse as REM, Elton John, and Paul Weller. While the lives of other musicians who died before their time, such as Jim Morrison, John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Gram Parsons, have been amply documented, there has never before been a biography of Nick Drake. Patrick Humphries' illuminating text includes exclusive interviews with friends, colleagues and musicians who knew and worked with Nick. It provides an unprecedented insight not only into the life and work of Nick Drake, but also into the music scene of the 1960s that formed his backdrop.
If a week is a long time in politics, then the 23 years since Nick's death represents a lifetime in the transitory world of pop. But the music of Nick Drake has never lost its place in his fans affections, and still its haunting beauty reaches out of fresh generations. This book is for all of them.

fine bio of a troubled musical genius........2007-03-26
the washington post book world had this to say: "drake fans will devour the book." and that i did. this is a very readable, well done portrait of the troubled genius that was nick drake. you probably would not be here reading this if you were not already familiar with drake's gorgeous music, so i am assuming you simply want to know about the life of an artist who's work you admire. this book will be just the ticket. i really can't understand the negative to luke-warm reviews posted here. drake's life and times are sculpted in a narrative that never falters. mr humphries has done a service to fans of nick drake, that i, for one, applaud. i highly recommend this bio to nick drake fanatics everywhere.
Less Is More.......2006-10-14
Can't much argue with the complaints that this is too long and rambling, badly edited, repetitive, and lacking in juicy details. Guilty on all counts. It could have easily been half as long.
For what it's worth, an early version did appear as a magazine article in MOJO, and worked quite well in that form. When it came to fleshing it out to a full book, it feels like he was trying too hard to compensate for the lack of first-hand participation by Drake's family, producer, and key colleagues such as John Martyn and Richard Thompson, and went overboard with the school chums material. Some of the latter is worthwhile, but the most insightful and interesting parts come from the interviews with session musicians, engineers, exasperated record company employees, and Linda Thompson. And the Francoise Hardy material is somewhat revelatory -- too bad there isn't more of it. The John Martyn stuff, even though second-hand, is quite touching.
Ultimately, one is left less with a deeper understanding of Nick Drake himself than with an overwhelming sense of disbelief and frustration at the cluelessness of those closest to him. Reading this account of his unravelling, I keep wondering why no one but his parents seemed to truly grasp the gravity of his illness. A good psychotherapist would likely arrive at an accurate diagnosis halfway through the book. Perhaps it was just the times, and there was simply less awareness then, but you'd think someone would have intervened. Twenty-five years on, we have documentaries about Metallica going to group therapy...
I would add that, without seeming to try very hard, the book makes a convincing case for Drake's death being accidental. I had always assumed it was intentional, but now I rather doubt it.
Too much fluff.......2005-11-13
As the other reviewers have said, there is too much useless information. He should have given in to this and made a concise, quick read, but instead seemed to set a page number goal and filled most of it with fluff.
Just Around the Next Corner..........2005-11-12
I hadn't read any of the reviews before reading this bio by P. Humphries. The one I agree most with is "This will have to be the Definitive Bio until..."
Humphries has done an admirable job, given the dictates of the project. It is really heart breaking, and of course a huge disappointment to him, that Sister Gabrielle Drake, and J.Boyd, (producer), would not participate, placing legal constraints on him, and personal ones that this book cannot overcome despite his effort here.Coupled with the fact that both parents had died, writing this book must have been like working with a straightjacket on.
The book is somewhat repetitive, and keeps referring back to the culture of BritFolk Music in the 60's. Being new to Nick Drake-the man and his music, I eagerly read, searching for the stories, the anecdotes, the details, that would flesh out the outline of the man-however reclusive. The stories that are there come from fellow students (male) from Marlborough and Cambridge, along with some musicians. It is surprising, in today's world, that friends/professional colleaugues, would not have gotten more involved with him upon seeing him decline, with an aim to help, but from the book it seems that only Joe Boyd, after moving to L.A., spoke to him ONE time on the phone, at the request of Nick's parents, about him getting some help, therapy. Others have expressed hindsight in relaying his withdrawal, but the book fails to elaborate on any incidents other than Boyd's one call. It may be that the attempts were there but didn't make it into the book.
As I read, I also longed for details having nothing to do with music, personal details that would show a bit what kind of person he was-did he ever, for example, release the frogs in science class? There's a dog on one of his sleeve pictures-did he like/ever have a family dog "in real life?" Did he have a valentine when he was eight? What foods did he love/hate? Did he take milk in his tea or coffee? A Bio is about The Life Of, and I wondered all about the life of this man/musician.
These Qs have "nothing to do with the music" of course-but Boyd's non-involvement precluded Humphries from quoting any of the lyrics anyway-so even that part is skeletal and leaves the reader hungry. He is a capable author and with the involvement of the two key missing people this book would have had so much more flesh on it's bones, instead of the padding others have mentioned, though the bit about teak and Burma and his grandfather delivering Nick set a nice background-but then moving into the life of Nick was sparser, like Clothes of Sand-NOT because Nick was sparse, I suspect, but just because the sources used only cover so much ground.
Had he lived, and learned to overcome or manage the depression and terminal shyness, there is a good chance that Drake would have gone on to composing more elaborate music, perhaps even conducting, and finally reaching the point where he could compose without feeling he was going too commercial-perhaps doing soundtracks (Randy Newman was an early influence, and after all Northern Sky is the tour de force of Serendipity-and NO individualism has been compromised) One of the insights the book provides is how, according to his mother, he loved to conduct from an early age. Mozart, broke, was composing for vaudeville when he died too early at age 35(Magic Flute) having once had some fame, now ignored by the Court and many of his contemporaries-was buried in a common grave, with no marker. And Nick, at age 26-"We will Rise and We are Everywhere." And Humphries is able to illustrate Drake's realization with his finally assertive: If I'm so good, where's the money? and the resultant Hanging on a Star.
Nick Drake may have been on the verge of really breaking in with the works to follow Pink Moon. Certainly Humphries is successful in this- relaying Drake's final musical efforts as indicative of his survivor's instinct kicking in-his productivity, and the Lost Track. To me, this makes the case for accidental overdose more compelling. He drives home the message of a pointless death-and with today's available treatments, all we who remain can do is howl at the moon.
What would be tragic is to have this one biography be the only one. I hope there will be another one, with MORE-more photos, more involvement, and legal releases, from the people still here who knew/know Nick best. Unfortunately, the sands of time do run, and Keith Morris (primary photographer) is missing/presumed gone-due to a scuba diving accident. The biography could indeed be edited, but again, given the constraints, Humphries does an admirable job, that will leave you hungry for more...looking around that next corner for, just plain old MORE.
overly long, rambling, supposition.......2005-06-28
As with the previous reviewer here i had high hopes for this book. Unfortunately i found this the most irritating biography i have ever read. There is way too much padding and repetition from chapter to chapter. This book is at least 100 pages too long. chapters go off at tangents that have nothing at all to do with Nick. The interesting parts are contemporary recollections of old school and college friends where we get to know that Nick was a normal teenager and university guy. Interviews with joe boyd, robert kirby, and brian wells give us more insight into his method (or lack of it) in the studio. However, what should be made aware is that nothing from John Martyn or most importantly Gabrielle Drake means he relies a lot on old interviews to gain a perspective. This is like an overly long 6th form essay (well researched but poorly written)
Book Description
The backside of Nick Drake's headstone, wedged deep into the earth of an English parish church graveyard, reads: "Now we rise and we are everywhere." The words were penned by Drake in 1974; 30 years later, they are jarringly prophetic. Like nearly all prematurely buried cult figures, Nick Drake is reinvented each time he is rediscovered. In 2000, the sheepish, astral musings of "Pink Moon" became synonymous with backing a Volkswagen Cabrio convertible away from a raucous house party, as VW boldly sold American drivers on the notion of eschewing red plastic cups and bro-hugs for moonbeams and tree trunks (and a cute German car - sort of). The Cabrio ad inadvertently sparked an unlikely boost in record sales, propelling the album towards platinum status nearly 28 years after its release. But with each well-intentioned revival of interest, Nick Drake slips further and further out of reach, martyred and codified, superceded and consumed by his own tragic context. Since his controversial death in 1974, Nick Drake has become: the 26-year-old prophet, the diffident enigma, the tortured precursor to Kurt Cobain, the fallen hero, the folksinger-as-folksymbol, the self-sacrificing patron saint of lonely, disaffected teenagers - the One who died for our sins.
Like dog-eared, over-highlighted copies of On The Road, Pink Moon gets passed around, shuffled from friend to friend like a secret, and whispered into pillows. There is something about the humility of Pink Moon - its unassuming twenty-eight minute playtime, the modest timbre of Drake's whispers, the unrecognizable open tunings, the way you always find yourself inching closer to your stereo speakers, trying to climb inside this record, to feed off its weird warmth - that endures.
This book will explore how a tiny acoustic record has puttered and purred its way into a new millennium. Amanda Petrusich interviews producer Joe Boyd, string arranger Robert Kirby, and even the marketing team behind the VW commercial.

This changed my life........2001-02-05
I had the priveledge of hearing Louis Posner speak last year. Not only was he incredibly inspirational, but he was full of life. It was an honor to meet him. Listening to his story changed my life. If anybody is thinking about buying this book, don't hesitate. It's worth every penny, plus more. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
Mr. Posner speaks.......2000-03-15
Last year I had the wonderful opportunity to hear Mr. Poser speak. For over an hour I was held spellbound by his enthusiasm, knowledge and ability to encapsulate a period of time in our history that was so devastating to so many people. He has accomplished the same with his book. Writing about his own personal experiences and weaving in historical facts adds a dimension and flavor to that period of time that you can genuinely feel. History and non-history buffs alike will find this book enlightening and thought provoking.
Through A Boy's Eyes.......2000-02-28
I have listened to the author give lectures so I was interested in the book version where he adds details and am very pleased with the result. The content is neither depressive nor heroic. It has a balance as seen from the perspective of an adolescent, alone and hunted by the Gestapo, who has courage and will to survive Auschwitz for two years. I highly recommend it for high school libraries.
Through a Boy's Eyes.......2000-02-25
I realy enjoyed this book. It was delightful to see how the indomitable human spirit can survive. This book is a true inspiration.
