    Book Description

The letters of Milton McJunkin are unique and insightful in several ways. His regiment, the 85th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and its wartime service was atypical of the majority of Civil War units. That organization had the distinction of serving in both the Army of the Potomac and the Army of the James. These letters thus provide a different view of the war than the average Army of the Potomac soldier. McJunkin and his comrades served their time around Washington and saw action on the Peninsula at Williamsburg and Seven Pines (Fair Oaks). But they also participated in expeditions to Suffolk, VA, and to Goldsboro, NC. In the latter campaign the regiment provided a reliable backbone for General Foster's force, creating a diversion in favor of General Burnside in Virginia, Foster's men slashed into North Carolina. The 85th fought at White Hall, Kinston, and outside of Goldsboro. Boarding steamers at Moorehead City, they proceeded to South Carolina to spend more than a year in operations against Charleston. While the Army of the Potomac was spilling blood on the 85th's native soil, the boys of western Pennsylvania were consecrating the sands of the South Carolina islands--in one week of siege operations against Fort Wagner on Morris Island, the regiment lost 120 men.

Upon returning to Virginia in May 1864, the regiment was part of General Butler's ill-fated operations in the Bermuda Hundred Campaign, and then in the siege of Richmond and Petersburg. The 85th was distinguished in the Battle of Deep Bottom, where three of its soldiers were awarded the Medal of Honor for their deeds of valor. Although November 1864 signaled the end of the regiment's service, a portion of the men had re-enlisted as veteran volunteers. These soldiers carried on and were among the force that cut off Lee's escape route at Appomattox.

McJunkin's letters permit us to observe the inevitable evolution of the hardy and boastful recruit to the wearied veteran. If one wants to know what was truly going through the minds of these fighting men, read his letter of Jan. 17, 1864. Sadly, Mcjunkin's one furlough home proved to be his last. Initially healthy and hardy, he was fated to perish not by bullet or shell, but rather a victim of disease. The reader feels his plight. McJunkin dies with less than a month left to serve. It is truly a shame that McJunkin met his demise before the completion of his term of service. The humorous content of some of his letters, leads one to believe that he was of likeable nature, and probably a favorite around camp.

This work is an apt tribute to a noble spirit and fine soldier as well commemorating the reputation of a gallant and hard fighting regiment from western Pennsylvania. Complementing the text, are nearly 60 photographs of McJunkin's comrades with military biographical sketches. After McJunkin's letters is a summary of the regiment's field service in "The Deeds and Sacrifices of the Eighty-fifth Pennsylvania." Then there is an accolade concerning the flag of the regiment, and the postwar handling of the sacred emblem. The book has been indexed, thus making it a useful resource to the reader. The book has 216 pages, 63 photos and sketches and a post-war roster.

Sigmund Freud's legacy and reputation have been under attack for several decades, but when the Library of Congress originally planned its Freud exhibition in 1996, their work seemed to have been conceived in total denial of that fact, and critics cried foul. After two years of tinkering, the exhibit was finally rescheduled to open in October 1998, and this coinciding collection of essays reflects the intervening debate. Librarian of Congress James Billington sets the wary editorial tone of a somewhat altered book in his foreword, speaking for example of the "now famous" Freud-Fliess correspondence--although anyone who knows the history of that correspondence's suppression, never mind its content, might well conclude that the more appropriate adjective is "infamous."

Most of the 18 essays, however, remain tenderfooted and pious, especially those by analysts such as Ilse Gubrich-Simitis and Patrick Mahony. Hannah Decker's article on the Dora case mentions critics in passing, but likewise sidesteps the more unpleasant issues, writing that Freud eventually "acknowledged his errors and showed he had made significant advances." But many critics, unmentioned by Decker, have argued strenuously that there were no real advances; even if there were, it remains clear that they did not permit Freud to see his own behavior in an honest light. Some of the overtly Freudian contributors are more flexible and, by extension, more interesting: Peter Gay on psychohistory, for example, and Robert Coles on the social idealism accompanying the idea that psychoanalysis was a key to resolving human conflict. And, as a result of the 1996 controversy, topnotch critics of Freud such as Adolf Grunbaum are now grudgingly represented. Still, Peter Kramer's rueful retrospective could serve as a coda not only to the volume but to the current state of Freud studies: "Our vision of Freud is composed of extreme images that barely intersect." --Richard Farr

    Book Description

In Freud: Conflict and Culture, Michael S. Roth presents eithgteen essays on the man who has become, in W.H. Auden's phrase, "a whole climate of opinion."

This fascinating collections explores Freud's work, the absorption of his theories into mainstream culture, and his hotly contested legacy.  Oliver Sacks demonstrates how Freud's early studies anticipated contemporary neuropsychology.  Scholar Muriel Dimen reveals a paradoxical liaison between psychoanalysis and feminism.  Art Spiegelman ( Maus) provides a comic strip that explores Freud's ideas about humor.  And Peter Kramer ( Listening to Prozac) projects how future generations may look upon the man who, along with Marx, Darwin, and Einstein, shaped an era.  By turns moving, contentious, and amusing, Freud: Conflict and Culture boasts a body of work as eclectic and engaging as the revolutionary genius himself.

The Art Spiegelman contribution to this book is in comic book form, pp. 165-8. In tips on telling jokes, a current obsession with people who would like to be popular, but a plague for those people who think that they already are popular, Art illustrates a joke: "This guy think's he's a mirror so he goes to see a shrink." I'm not going to tell you the results. That would be too much like trying to read Mad magazine to my mother while she was ironing. Mark Twain was the guy who could be funnier, if Art quoted him right. "Everything human is pathetic." (p. 168)

5 out of 5 stars BEFORE YOU HAVE DENTAL WORK, READ THIS BOOK.......2007-03-01

Metal in your mouth, fillings, crowns, implants, should be considered carefully. This book will help you to be an informed dental patient. Dentistry is changing radically for the better. Educate yourself.

5 out of 5 stars If you have teeth, you should read this book........2007-02-16

Written in language a common person can understand. Very informative concerning how the teeth are connected to all parts of the body and not just separate pieces of the body. As a novice in learning about whole body health, this book helped me tremendously to understand meridians and the improtance of a healthy mouth.

1 out of 5 stars One Big Conspiracy.......2006-11-16

This is the sort of book for paranoid people addicted to conspiracy theories. They would rather believe a fanciful lie than the mundane truth.

Though I don't agree with most of what's written in this book, I don't regret buying it. It teaches me how to con ignorant people with high tech jargon and conspiracy theories. If people BELIEVE that amalgams or metal restorations are the cause of their headaches, fatigue or whatever symptoms, then removing them will definitely cure them. That's how faith healing works.

The only reason why I don't use amalgam in my practice is because I do cosmetic dentistry. If the patient does not mind the colour, amalgam is definitely a superior direct filling material for Class 2 and subgingival preps. I have absolutely no qualms about having that done for myself.

Toxicity? Sure, some people are affected by amalgams and anything can be toxic to somebody, but let's not forget that these cases are extremely rare (perhaps less than 10 on this planet and most of them would be Chinese). There are literally thousands of tests and studies establishing amalgams as safe filling materials over the last 100 years. There are numerous studies that show how safe amalgams are. If Dr Breiner has been to Asia where we have much healthier diets and lifestyles, he may notice that we also have many healthy 70 to 90-year-old Asian men and women who have gold and amalgam-filled teeth in their mouths.

Are composites totally safe? The incidence of allergic reactions to composites (very low) is higher than that of amalgam toxicity. This is something the author failed to inform us. All his anecdotal evidence are almost laughable as they are not supported by independent studies and sceptical parties. Not one case he mentioned can be conclusively attributed to amalgam. Mercury can be very toxic, but after tituration and amalgamation, the metal remains in the solid state and is not absorbed by the body. It's different from inhaling mercury vapour daily, injecting or ingesting mercury or mercuric compounds.

At the end of the day, propagating such beliefs will only spark panic, paranoia and various psychosomatic "illnesses". Following Breiner's protocols for "detox", patients will only be paying a fortune for otherwise very simple dental work. Gosh, with so many gullible patients in America, I should probably move my practice to America and start doing amalgam detox instead of honing my skills for cutting crowns, bridges and sinking implants.

    5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2006-08-23

This book was great, it really enlightened me to the mouth being the entry to the whole body. I will be going to an integrative, whole body dentist next! Definitely worth reading!

5 out of 5 stars Compelling Information about Whole Body Dentistry.......2006-03-10

This was a very informative and well written book about "alternative dentistry". Dr. Breiner explains the differences between traditional and whole body dentistry in easy to understand terms. He gave many examples of the types of health problems which can be related to amalgams, root canals, periodontal work, orthodontics and bridges and partials. He also described the kind of exam and treatment a whole body dentist would use. A great read.

This book was a delight. It nearly read like a novel and I couldn't put it down. I like referring to it prior to cooking for the inspiration and the reminder to approach my cooking in the right frame of mind. No matter what I prepare, the flavors are so much more intense and complex when I am consciously cooking with a open, giving heart. Cooking should be a heartfelt gift and a way to nurture the ones we love. This book shows you how to cook with passion. Wait until you taste the difference!

            Book Description

Now reissued with a striking new cover, Fabulous Fabrics of the 50s is the classic guide to the textiles of the exuberant post-war era, a time when bold new patterns and unprecedented color combinations revitalized d cor. Designs based on science and fantasy proliferated; no home was complete without boomerang-patterned drapes slung across the picture window or a cowboy-print couch in the living room. In this nostalgia-packed celebration of textile design, more than 170 full-color photographs accompany lively text and detailed captions highlighting the playful patterns of the 50s. Their genesis is revealed in equally fabulous fabrics from earlier eras, such as jaunty nautical designs from the 40s, over-blown florals of the 30s, and the deco-inspired prints of the 20s. A must-have resource book for collectors, designers, decorators, artists, style mavens, and pop-culture buffs, Fabulous Fabrics of the 50s is a chic and colorful tribute to a fascinating era in textile design.

The author mentions he has never had a career.
If you have spent part of your life in the 'rat race' you are already organized and self displined enough to create your path out. You know what to do. The frugal-cheapskate series has more helpful information about reducing your expenses, and books like living green and cheap are inspiring, when it seems daunting.

                        5 out of 5 stars Empowering!.......2002-06-13

... It takes a lot of guts to "drop out" in the 2000's and there is a lack of support toward doing it effectively. Fogler's book is in my library and I revisit it periodically for the support he gives toward "adult liberation."

The book is very different from Your Money or Your Life which advocates making the most money possible in the shortest amt. of time in order to retire early. If you have ever sold your soul in a mind-numbing capacity and felt like you wanted to die-- big bucks notwithstanding--Fogler's book is for you. He offers a gentler approach. Who cares about retirement if your life is pleasant enough and your p/t work keeps you vital? And in our get-ahead, consume-the-world culture, Fogler's advocacy of home-based-living is refreshing AND sustainable!

Specifics are absent because it is incumbent on each of us in our distinct circumstances to write our own script. Yes, this requires some thought! I left professional work behind for 20-hour a week employment in a food co-op and I turned my garage into a studio rental. Yes, I am fortunate enough to have a house in the first place, and a mortgage... . There *are* ways to accomplish the same lifestyle: roomates, caregiving in exchange for housing, an inexpensive community. There is no widespread prescription for how we individually accomplish Un-Jobbing, but Fogler's book gives us the nudge to do it.

If more people in the states adopted a lower-impact, simpler lifestyle, there would be plenty of p/t work for all of us, sustainable agriculture and production here at home, and fewer cars and airplanes [messing] up the environment.

Make fun if you want to, but I think Fogler is a visionary who generously offers his insights and support in his book.

3 out of 5 stars There are better voluntary simplicity books out there.......2002-03-07

This is an okay book. If you're just getting started on the notions of voluntary simplicity as a way of life, you'll probably find it very helpful; however, it often borrows concepts from the book Your Money or Your Life, in places not even giving credit to the authors of YMOYL. The beginning starts off like a one-man manifesto on why the rules of our society are not healthy, but if you can tough it out, it gets better a few chapters in.

1 out of 5 stars Not really worth the"life essence" to purchase and read........2002-01-12

An infrequently interesting and short read.

Not much more than a single case history of the authors experiences and exposition of social values. The book has many disclaimers to glom over the fact that the book has no real broad application to the many different situations that the reader may be in.

A lot of the book is just an undetailed "Cliff Notes" verison of the book: "Your Money or Your Life". There isn't really enough information and even less new information to warrant the publication in book form.

I'd be very interested to read about the success of the author 20 years from now following this financial methodolgy.

                        Book Description

Louis Armstrong has been the subject of countless biographies and music histories. Yet scant attention has been paid to the remarkable array of writings he left behind. Louis Armstrong: In His Own Words introduces readers to a little-known facet of this master trumpeter, band leader, and entertainer. Based on extensive research through the Armstrong archives, this important volume includes some of his earliest letters, personal correspondence with one of his first biographers in 1943-44, autobiographical writings, magazine articles, and essays. Here are Armstrong's own thoughts on his life and career--from poverty in New Orleans to playing in the famous cafes, cabarets, and saloons of Storyville, from his big break in 1922 with the King Oliver band to his storming of New York, from his breaking of color barriers in Hollywood to the infamous King of the Zulus incident in 1949, and finally, to his last days in Queens, New York. Along the way Armstrong recorded touching portraits of his times and offered candid, often controversial, opinions about racism, marijuana, bebop, and other jazz artists such as Jelly Roll Morton and Coleman Hawkins. Indeed, these writings provide a balanced portrait of his life as a musician, entertainer, civil rights activist, and cultural icon. Armstrong's idiosyncratic use of language and punctuation have been preserved to give the reader an unvarnished portrayal of this compelling artist. This volume also includes introductions to the writings, as well as an annotated index of names and places significant to Armstrong's life.

He was the greatest of all jazz-musicians. He was a founding father of the form. No one could play the horn like him, and no one could sing his gravelly voiced songs like him.
                        "I'm white inside
                        that can't help my case
                        cause I can't hide
                        what is on my face.

                        Old feather bed,
                        Filled up with lead
                        Feel like Ole Ned
                        Wish I wuz dead,

What did I do to be so black and blue?

One of the finest music critics writing today, Terry Teachout, says that this book is true Satchmo and he would have loved it to be twice as long as it is. The more Satchmo the better.

While it is true that he knew problems with the black-community in later years because some held him to be serving the 'Man' the truth was he brought great honor and dignity to not only blacks in America but all Americans.
And above all he brought joy and beauty through his music into the lives of so many.

5 out of 5 stars A GENIUS IN MUSIC... AND IN WORDS.......2004-07-22

Of the 21 books I have collected which are either by or about Louis Armstrong, this is definitely the one I would choose if I was allowed to keep only one. Basically a collection of autobiographical pieces, interviews, letters and so on, it reveals more of Armstrong as a man than all the other books put together. It also proves that, just as Armstrong had his own unique voice as a musician, so he has virtually invented his own language when doing his "typing" as he modestly called it. Grammar and punctation have been used this way nowhere else. Particularly moving are Armstrong's lengthy reminiscences of his early life in New Orleans, Chicago and elsewhere. Yes, his childhood was severely deprived but he recalls it not just without self-pity but with a kind of joy - joy in his family, in the friends who helped him along the way and, of course, his discovery of his own innate talent for both playing and singing. The book is filled with affectionate pen-portraits, as well as sharp social comment and, at times, with indignation at the injustices of life, whether suffered by himself or others. Equally moving are the pieces written when his life was nearing its end yet still exuding that same extraordinary open-ness and generosity of spirit which are humbling to experience. If anyone wants to know what Louis was like, and if they can take a little time to tune in to his vivid and utterly unself-conscious style, this is the book they should read.

                        5 out of 5 stars Quite revealing.......2004-06-16

Satch fans will find a whole lot more to our hero than we knew before. For one thing, his 1954 bio was severely edited and we get some of the raw stuff here. Satch wrote as eloquently (and uniquely) as he sang. He does not hold back on his views of race (see "Louis Armstrong and the Jewish Family" (1970) which may shock some people and outrage others, as is true with almost everything else here. He holds forth on his love of "Swiss Kriss" and its after effects and delivers a heartfelt letter to a fan in Vietnam closing with the lyrics of "You'll Never Walk Alone."

Would be nice if the complete unedited documents were here in a multivolume series, but this will suffice. Swiss Krissly yours.

5 out of 5 stars A beautifully scripted narrative of our mutual history........1999-07-12

Julia Schueler seemed to float through history. Her view of the world's progression is everything it should be, funny, emotional and honest. This is a wonderful book.

5 out of 5 stars A must-read for history buffs who prefer the personal story........1999-06-30

Julia Schueler's autobiographical book remembers the story of a girl who always lives elsewhere - Russia, Germany, France, America. . . She interlaces the past with the present - often within the same page. She describes people's lives, hopes, fears during the 1930's and 1940's during World War II (we Americans tend to think Hitler's terror began with Pearl Harbor). She does not paint with a broad brush - the details are exquisite.

Unlike most monolingual English speaking Americans, Julia's world was/is peopled with many languages, many cultures. Her style of writing is unique and made me want to taste each word, each phrase, each story - and often I reread. Some books make the reader sad to see that there are fewer and fewer pages left to be read. "Elsewhere: A Memoir" is one of those books. -Diana DeMille

                                        Book Description

"The Elsewhere." Or, midbar-biblical Hebrew for both "wilderness" and "speech." A place of possession and dispossession, loss and nostalgia. But also a place that speaks. Ingeniously using a Talmudic interpretive formula about the disposition of boundaries, Newton explores narratives of "place, flight, border, and beyond." The writers of The Elsewhere are a disparate company of twentieth-century memoirists and fabulists from the Levant (Palestine/Israel, Egypt) and East Central Europe. Together, their texts-cunningly paired so as to speak to one another in mutually revelatory ways-narrate the paradox of the "near distance."
