Colin Turnbull (1924-94) made his reputation with two bestselling works of popular anthropology that tell diametrically opposed tales. The Forest People (1962) holds up the central African Pygmies as examples of the human capacity for communal goodness and love, while The Mountain People (1973) argues that Uganda's Ik tribe, threatened by a killing famine, had cast aside those qualities in favor of soulless individualism. Turnbull's life was as controversial and rife with contradictions as his books, fellow anthropologist Roy Richard Grinker reveals in this absorbing biography. Born in England, Turnbull roamed the world and eventually made his home in America. Product of a conventional, privileged upbringing, he saw himself as a champion for the world's oppressed. He infused anthropology with a passion some deemed unscientific but general readers found electrifying. He was openly homosexual despite the threat this posed to his academic career, which was never his top priority. The love of Turnbull's life was an African American man; he proclaimed Joe Towles's brilliance but was ambivalent about his lover gaining financial independence, and their 29-year relationship was marred by violence and infidelities. Nonetheless, Joe's 1988 death devastated Turnbull, who also succumbed to AIDS six years later. Grinker displays both discernment and critical sympathy in this gripping chronicle of a tumultuous life.

    Book Description

What Margaret Mead did for Samoa, Colin Turnbull did for Africa. An upper class Oxford-educated Englishman, Turnbull’s life-long love affair with the African Pygmies made him one of the most famous intellectuals of the 1960s and ‘70s. In an intimate portrait of a remarkable man--at various times a gold-miner, builder of “The African Queen,” and anti-death penalty advocate--Grinker describes how Turnbull fell in love with a beautiful but poor African American named Joe Towles who became as much Turnbul’s heroic creation as did the Pygmies. For 30 years, they lives as an openly gay, interracial couple in New York City and rural Virginia until Joe’s death of AIDS in 1988. Devastated, Turnbull buried his own spirit in a second coffin laid next to Towles, gave away most of his money, and until his own death from AIDS in 1994, lived as a Buddhist monk tutored by the Dalai Lama’s eldest brother. This is a compelling story of a celebrity scholar, his sexuality and his passion for a fiercely lived life.

3 out of 5 stars informative yet rather strange.......2004-09-20

This is an informative biography, no question on that, but one wonders what the relationship was between the author, Roy Grinker, and his subject, Colin Turnbull. Both did doctorates in anthropology at Harvard, and both studied the same peoples in Africa (does getting a PhD in anthropology absolutely necessitate studying pygmies in Afriac? sure seems like it...). From what I've read in other sources, Grinker turned his back on Turnbull's "approach" to pygmie culture, only to regret this after Turnbull's death. One wonders whether or not this book is a too-late tribute to the author's academic father-figure.

    4 out of 5 stars Curiosity Satiated.......2002-05-09

I have been curious about Colin Turnbull ever since I read the "Mountain People" several years ago. As an anthropology student, I identified with Turnbull's willingness to "learn" the lifeways of the "other", and in doing so, reshape his own worldview. I am afraid that this book may have told me a little more than I wanted to know however...
Turnbull's relationship with Joseph Towles is a critical part of the story, and I appreciate and acknowledge that. I had to wonder exactly how the biographer knew the very intimate gastroenterological details that were included in the text. It is just a matter of personal taste, but that is the only reason that I did not give the book a complete five star rating. The book does give us a much needed, intimate portrait of an important anthropologist and human being.

    2 out of 5 stars Turnbull's life.......2001-07-20

This is an interesting book, but I did not find it as compelling as other reviewers. The material is fascinating, but the presentation is a bit plodding and detracts from the narrative. As a fellow academic, I understand Grinker's desire to include the wealth of details his painstaking research uncovered; but as a reader I wished he'd had a more careful editor who would have excised some of the irrelevant, distracting details and polished the presentation of the rest of the book. (Apart from some clumsy writing, there are even spelling and typographical errors in several chapters!)

As for content, Grinker does a decent job explaining Turnbull's fascination with Africa and "the Other." The chapters on Turnbull's early (pre-anthropologist) life are too many and too long for me, but they do help provide a context for what came after. Grinker does offer some important insights on paradoxes in Turnbull's life and on anthropology's connection to colonial projects. If you are interested in the anthropology of Africa, Anglo-American social science, pre- (and post-) Stonewall experiences of gay men, or Turnbull himself, you will probably enjoy the book despite its flaws. But if you have no patience for slow and awkward writing, don't buy this without perusing it first!

    2 out of 5 stars Dr. Turnbull.......2001-01-15

I listened to Dr. Turnbull lecture in West Virginia when I was 19-21 years old in the early eighties in my hometown. At that time I found him an inspiration. He was able to communicate such respect for life, how different people live it and to provide an insight into the beauty of the peoples he had studied. When I saw this book I was delighted because, of course, I was hoping to feel that person I came to know somehow communicated in the text. In the end I was left feeling his life was brutal and disillusioning and a horror in many respects. I think the man I sat down and spoke to years ago, who gave such inspirational lectures, would never have left you this way.
This is not a love story , it's a sad defeated story about failed love and man's degradations. In this way I found the book an oddity.

I suppose Dr. Turnbull was accused of operation with rose colored specs, but in a sense a teacher deals with the human spirit and he was a very elevating person. One thing that stayed with me was his discussion of how without certain fundamental things like food and security people behaved without their "humanity". It helped me appreciate Maslow's heirarchy so much when I came to study that in ed classes and then use it's meaning in teaching. Dr. Faini brought him to our world in school , and his love of music and percussion and world instrumentation was so obviously connected to Dr. Turnbull. I prefer to leave my memories intact and read Turnbull himself, even if the author might contend he has exposed the reality.

    5 out of 5 stars A family story.......2000-12-15

I was gratified that Dr. Grinker wrote this book because Colin Turnbull was my cousin, and I knew almost nothing about him. I echo the postive comments by the other reviewers, but what made the book special for me were the references to his family and his relations with them. Dr. Grinker does a wonderful job of not bringing his personal feelings about Colin's work, his homosexuality, or his relationship with Joe Towles into the book. Grinker does, however, give a wonderful sense of Colin and Colin's take on life. One doesn't have to be interested in either anthropology or homosexuality to like this book; it is, simply put, an excellent study of an all-too-human man.

        Book Description

Most childhood fears are nothing to worry about. But panic attacks, phobias, and persistent anxiety can darken a child's horizons and lead to disrupted sleep, lower grades, and missed opportunities to make friends and explore the world. Dr. Cynthia G. Last helps parents determine when a child's apprehension is cause for concern. Drawing on 25 years of clinical practice and research, she vividly illustrates the different forms that childhood anxiety can take and offers practical solutions specific to each. For example, Dr. Last shows how to schedule "worry time" to ease generalized anxiety, and explains why reassurance is often counterproductive for kids with obsessive-compulsive disorder. The book emphasizes strategies for preventing episodes before they begin, demonstrates how to intervene when one is in progress, and offers tips on how to keep anxiety from worsening as a child matures. Readers will learn to be consistent and encouraging as their child develops the confidence needed to face--and conquer--worries of every kind.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2005-12-14

I'm not an experienced chef I'm a mom with young kids, a great husband and a job. What I like about this book is the fact that it has great recipes from all over the world (not just French even though the author talks about her french ancestory in the book).

I think most moms are like me. You would like to prepare good and interesting food for your family without spending hours in the kitchen. This book is one of the few cookbooks I've read that takes this into consideration.

The preparation for most of the meals are fairly simple and straightforward. What's great is that one day I'm cooking French, the other day Italian, the other day Jamaican etc. These are recipes from places she has travelled.

I do recommend this book because I think it's pretty good for the average mom like myself who doesn't have a lot of time but who likes the idea of keeping it interesting for my family.

          5 out of 5 stars Nice book.......2005-12-05

I have just received this book for my birthday. I 'm not a very good cook and my cooking skills are very limited.
This book is perfect for me because the recipes are simple and so well explain.
I have only tried few recipes so far but they have all turned out pretty good so far.

1 out of 5 stars Simple & Simply Delicious by Sylvie Rocher.......2005-12-05

I bought this book based on the reviews that I had read that seemed to indicate the book was of a superior standard. I have to say that I am very disappointed in the book. The layout and pictures are extremely amateurish and the recipes look like something a child would put together not an experienced book. I would not recommend the book to anyone who is a good and experienced cook. It is extremely over priced for the lack of content. Definitely not recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Beginner Bread Book.......2003-08-20

I learned to bake bread from this book, and that's saying something. I'd tried several other books and recipes that all assumed I knew things I didn't (like what a "sponge" is, or how to tell when the dough is done rising). I was beginning to think that baking yeast breads was just one of those talents some people were born with and I wasn't. My loaves usually resembled bricks.

And then I found Beth's Basic Bread Book. It told me everything I needed to know in intimate detail, included lots of gorgeous (and instructive) pictures and, well, I learned to bake bread. The good, crusty, fluffy, tasty, not-at-all-bricklike kind. If you're already an experienced baker of bread, you might still get some yummy recipes from this book, but you might just as well skip on to *The Bread Bible* by the same author.

          5 out of 5 stars A great technical manual.......1999-05-22

This is THE book to buy about bread baking if you want all the technical information you can imagine. No where else have I found the wealth of information that encourages good basic technique AND serious experimentation. Each step in the process is explained for purpose as well as procedure. The margin notes that give recipe "commitment" (time, steps, etc.) at a glance. Gives a great substitutions list. Shortage of recipes but that is not its purpose. An essential companion book to a bigger recipe book

4 out of 5 stars Too many words.......1998-05-03

Being a simple person, I found that this book provided more detail than I wanted. The recipes call for some ingredients that I didn't have on hand and I couldn't find in the super market e.g. semolina flour. I find the Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book 1968 version, simpler and easier to follow (given to me by ex wife no 1 as she left me). For me, at this point in my bread making career (3 weeks), there are just too many words for me in Beth's book. I will keep this book on hand for possible changes in my bread making philosopy.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginning bread bakers........1998-03-03

More than just recipes, Beth Hensperger provides much needed technique for the first-time bread baker. She describes herself as an angel sitting on the new baker's shoulder, and she is right. Even my first loaf of bread was perfect thanks to the details Ms. Hensperger shared in this book. I wish I could e-mail her personally!

The first thing that I noticed about this book is it had a lot of pictures and not alot of info on how to airbrush t-shirts. However I did find the book useful in creating new designs and to know what needed to be done and in what order. Over all it is a good book to get you exited about airbrushing on textiles but doesn't give you enough information on on to do it.

                    Book Description

With John Lee Hooker's death in June 2001 the world lost one of the last great Mississippi Delta bluesmen. Acclaimed writer Charles Schaar Murray's Boogie Man is the authorized and authoritative biography of this musician whose extraordinary career spanned over fifty years and included over one-hundred albums and five Grammy Awards. Murray was given unparalleled access to Hooker, and lets him tell his own story in his own words, from life in the Deep South to San Francisco, from the 1948 blues anthem "Boogie Chillen" to the Grammy-winning album The Healer nearly a half-century later. Boogie Man is far more than merely a brilliant biography of one man; it also gives the story of the music that inspired him. "When I die," Hooker said, they'll bury the blues with me. But the blues will never die." Here is the book that does him and his music full justice.

3 out of 5 stars Too Much Boogie, Not Enough Man.......2007-04-22

I am a fan of John Lee Hooker and his music. I will always remember seeing him in a live concert in San Diego. This small, slightly built man had a voice as deep as the ocean and a distinctive guitar style that was instantly recognizable. So, I eagerly picked up his biography, anticipating a great read. Although there is extensive biographical info presented here, there's too much jive to make it work. The author's style is distracting and in places it seriously derails the story. And I'm left with the overall impression that far too much of the book is filler, not solid story. And that's a shame. Hooker's story and life were compelling enough that no fluff is needed.

3 out of 5 stars start reading on page 80!.......2006-01-18

I have to confess I nearly put the book down for good after the first 50 or so pages. It read like a sociology paper! Boring. But once the writer started into Hookers life it picked up and became quite enjoyable. I especially enjoyed the interviews with friends and family. It did give me an insight into his life. And having met him years ago in a club, I can agree that he was an incredibly sociable and friendly man. Totally unique. There will never be another just like him.

2 out of 5 stars too much bull about everything but the subject.......2005-08-10

I wouldn't recommend this book unless you are looking for a sleeping aid. The few parts that are about John Lee Hooker are good, but there is just too much bull that has little to do with the subject. Too wordy and too hard a read.

3 out of 5 stars Better than nothing but..........2004-07-11

When someone does that other book, I trust their research will be more thorough. Murray goes on for a long paragraph about Hooker's birth year. A quick simple search of the 1920 Census, available years before this book was published, showed John Lee was seven then. Murray doesn't even give 1913 among the 4 years he listed. For our few pages about Hooker in Dedicated Dads: Stepfathers of Famous People (available amazon.com), our author found some interesting anecdotes on a CD liner--Murray missed them, too. And I agree that Murray went on and on and injected himself too much.

                    2 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2004-02-25

The author seems to have been under the mistaken impression that those of us reading a biography about John Lee Hooker actually wanted to read a book about Charles Shaar Murray. This could have been so much better.

4 out of 5 stars This is a truly heartwarming story about faith and divine providence.......2005-11-21

A childless, not particularly religious, Jewish couple is living in Taiwan working as professors and studying Chinese. One day Avraham, the husband, takes the subway to work as usual. He stumbles across an abandoned (Chinese) baby and their lives are irrevocably changed. As new parents their priorities begin to change. They start becoming more religious and return to the US. After they become orthodox Barbara, the wife, gives birth to several sons and they move to Israel.

It was at this point that I became concerned about Devorah, their Chinese daughter. This was back before adopting Chinese daughters became commonplace. In spite of being sheltered by a strong loving family, Devorah experiences prejudice and bullying for the first time. I wondered if Devorah, who was completely estranged from her native culture, would find acceptance and an eventual husband in this orthodox Jewish setting. Bearing in mind that Devorah's father had publicly spoken out against Jews marrying non-Jews I felt this placed Devorah in a very precarious position. None of these issues is addressed.

I read this book more than a decade ago when it first came out. I would recommend that Avraham Schwartzbaum write an updated version. Tell us how Devorah is doing now; address the issues of mixed families and non-Caucasian converts to Judaism. So many Westerners have adopted Chinese daughters that if Schwartzbaum were to reflect on the situation and offer some advice he would probably find a broad audience.

By the way, I heard from a reliable source that Devorah did marry and start a family.

                          5 out of 5 stars what a story!.......2001-08-09

This autobiography of Jewish parents and an adoptive chinese baby was fascinating. I would have liked to hear more about the life of this young Asian girl and her new Jewish life. It really is a great story about the Jewish faith, life and customs. Any BTs can appreciate the struggles and joy that comes with this faith.

5 out of 5 stars Truly meaningful book!.......2000-08-17

This is a story that really speaks to the heart and soul. It is a personal story that we are privileged to share. I highly recommend it! Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars How a Chinese Baby Brought a Jewish Family back to Judaism.......2000-01-17

If you have adopted or are adopting (I am in the process myself) this is the book for you. It is a most fascinating tale, and will make you realize that the miraculous does happen - in the most unusual ways. A fairly irreligious Jewish couple, who are having trouble conceiving, live in China because the husband has a Fulbright scholarship. One day he is in a train station and hears a baby cry - she was left abandoned under his seat, in a bamboo cradle. The couple adopt her, and when they return to the U.S. a Rabbi informs them that he will not convert the child to Judaism unless she is raised Orthodox. The couple tries to become Orthodox, and eventually take to it like a duck to water. (And there are more wonderful surprises!) The story is unbelievable, and their love for their beautiful Asian daughter is invincible. The only problem I had with the book is that eventually the husband (who is the author) throws in religious language all the time - "God willing", "It is up to Hashem" (God) etc., until I wanted to throw the book out. But still, the story is so unique and loving that it overcomes the book's flaws. Shows you how love for a child absolutely knows no geographic, national, or ethnic boundaries. And, by the way, the daughter herself writes a chapter at the end which is a wonderful touch.
