A How to Stay Alive Manual for Infantrymen.......2001-04-26

This is a fascinating story by a man who fought in three wars as an infantryman, beginning as a private. It is obvious that he knows how to stay alive in combat and spends time talking about what he learned, but he attributes his own success to a belief that God had a purpose for him. One of the two or three best memoirs by a working infantryman that I have read. W. Dannenmaier (author of "We Were Innocents)."

This book tastes great and it's good for you, too. Feeding Your Child for Lifelong Health: Birth Through Age Six is based on the principle of "metabolic programming," the scientifically rooted idea that foods eaten in early childhood directly affect the function of individual cells that control strength, intelligence, the immune system, and other vital functions. Good source of information about what to feed your kid and when. For those of you who are careful about what you eat and know basic nutrition, none of this is rocket science.

Excellent approach.......2005-01-19

I read this book when my first child was born 5 1/2 years ago, and it set the course for how I feed my children. I came away from this book with clear, applicable guidelines for presenting food to my children. This is sound dietary and psychological advice that stays at an abstract enough level that you can apply the principles to your home diet, instead of presenting specific recipes or diet plans you must follow.

This is one of the few child rearing books whose impact has resonated five years after reading it.

Truly excellent -- with a couple of caveats.......2004-05-17

Of all the books I have read on feeding babies, toddlers, and children, I find this the most realistic and most the clearly based in scientific research.

It's clearly written and well organized, and doesn't recommend any strange foods you wouldn't put on the table for guests or tuck into yourself.

That said, I was disappointed at the authors recommendation to start kids on refined breads and crackers because 'they don't need the extra fiber' -- along side the suggestion that you not start your child out on anything you don't want them to prefer. It seems contradictory to me, and my little guy is getting whole grains only. I was also disappointed at the author's lack of knowledge about breastfeeding. In the parts of the book that deal with slightly older children, they have some misleading and out of date information that discounts the benefits of extended breastfeeding and overstates the benefits of cows milk and artificial baby milks.

But, even so, I must say that they have some extremely wise and useful information about how children think about and respond to food and some excellent advice for how to raise a child with a good relationship to food -- it's balanced (an occasional piece of candy at a friend's house or a packet of chips after swim class won't kill most children) but weighted in favor of whole foods and higher nutrition.

Just what I was looking for!

Informative book for parents.......2003-08-04

I would recommend this book for all parents. I wish I'd read it when my oldest was born instead of when he was 2 1/2 and my youngest was 1. Good, practical tips for getting toddlers to eat veggies. OVerall healthy eating practices recommended. Debunks some myths/wives tales, ec. Pediatricians should be recommending this, too. I think I do a good job with my children's nutrition, especially when I see the junk that most of America and even some of my friends let their children eat, but this definitely inspired me to do much better.

Essential for all Moms.......2003-05-09

As a registered nurse and Mom this book is essential. It goes through the stages of feeding starting with breast vs. bottle, including exellent info on breasfeeding. You dont even need to buy a seperate breastfeeding book. Then moves on to babys first foods, including which foods to introduce at certain ages. Gives sample menus for babies of all ages. Also helps parents understand that pushing food on kids only makes them not want to eat. Helps with tips for picky eaters. How to get your kids to eat the foods you want them to eat with them knowing it.

However, except for the front cover of the book, there are no pictures of the finished recipes for you to see what your masterpiece low-carb creations will look like. But that just means you will be in for a BIG surprise (and a good one at that!) when you see how these recipes turn out. That's the fun part about making recipes like these and you should look forward to making each of these recipes for yourself. Don't be afraid to try a recipe you've never done before because Broihier and Mayone make it so simple for you to look like you've cooked this way for years.

This is an exquiste book.I would give it ten stars if I could. Ms. Parker has beautifully reproduced in her book the watercolors she painted of Mississippi wildflowers, a wonderful biodiversity of wildflowers in the state I call home. Although localized to Mississippi this mystical, poetic, yet technically accurate depiction of the wildflowers is far superior to photographic field guides, all right for the field but of no interest in terms of floral art. THIS IS NOT A FIELD GUIDE. A book to savor.Akin to Audubon, THE TEMPLE OF FLORA.

A friend recommended this book as we both started our second pregnancies. I'm so glad she did!! This book is great for first time moms and moms who have already had their first babies - excellent perspectives on what we go through after birth and gentle, reassuring advice on how to cope. A must read!

A Book for Body, Mind and Spirit.......2003-03-17

Aviva Jill Romm's book is destined to have widespread appeal for its compassionate and wise advice. I am grateful to Aviva for having so much vital information in one volume. The topics are Herbs, Nutrition, Yoga, and Practical Wisdom and sagely begins with Chapter One -- The Birth of a Mother. Her chapter on Replenishing Yourself -- Body, Mind and Spirit is particularly wonderful and the photos of the mother and newborns are full of soul. Both Robin Lim's (After The Baby's Birth) and Aviva's books make the best baby shower / Blessing Way gifts! For too many years postpartum has been neglected in terms of self-help guidebooks and within a moon of one another in 2002 came two excellent contributions to what I hope to see is the growing body of knowledge for new mothers. This is a book I will give my children and grandchildren!
