sharp and ironic, a great story.......2007-02-24
There is a small group of women in the world, especially in fashionable big cities, who spend their 20's looking hot and finding generous, and wealthy men to take care of them. The Millennium Girl is about these women, who have a very short time period, or shelf life, to either make a ton of money off of their prey - I mean, men - or to find one who will marry them and keep them in their luxurious lifestyle forever.
It's ironic, it's poignant, and it talks about the fears that all of us have - women and men - about growing old alone, being taken care of, being able to take care of ourselves, standing on our own two feet, and in the end, finding out who we are, regardless of where we come from, and creating a life that reflects that.
I loved it. Well written, emotional, and it stayed with you. Definitely a really good read. If you were into this, you might want to check out Arthur Neresian's books too, for commentary on navigating life in NY.
NYC man.......2004-04-23
The very dapper Coerte V. W. Felske lives in New York City. He is the author of three novels: The Shallow Man, Word, and now, Millennium Girl. There has been no shortage of controversy surrounding the publication of his work, since Felske writes about subjects that are upsetting or morally objectionable. His first amusing novel, The Shallow Man, was about a man, Nick Laws, who was obsessed with models, and gave us the term "Modelizer." Right away, Felske's work seems destined to be filmed like authors like Nick Hornby and Chuck Palaniuk, who I think he somewhat resembles if any. His novels were a pleasant shock to me when I read them years ago. Felske was also good at coining terms and creating comic situations. He took his sharp observational skills and turned the focus on Hollywood and its hangers on, in his second novel, Word. Heyward Hoon is an unsuccessful screenwriter who gets hired by a producer to procure some women. Again, this wild and humorous look at what it takes to make it in movies is given the Felske touch. Both novels are now being made into films. His new novel, Millennium Girl, is mostly about gold diggers, and women who travel around the world in search of wealthy businessmen. Bodicea is a girl from a small town who is just about at the end of her window of opportunity, her twenties, and is desperate to marry a "walletman" before she turns thirty. Poignantly, Felske shows us a glimpse of this jetset world where people like to mix love and money. I talked to Coerte Felske recently in a cafe in Soho, where we talked about the entire buzz around his work.
AL: There is a certain sensationalism about your work. Are you ever worried that there isn't enough literary content?
CF: I think my books are, for the modern age, as literary as it gets. You can talk about the masters of old: I would guarantee that Doestoevsky or Fitzgerald, or anyone like that, wouldn't be writing like they did back then right now. It's much more of "sound bite-y" world. I don't think that I'm trying to adapt a style for that world, but I'm a product of it. There's so much more information being thrown at us. I wouldn't discount my books as being non-literary. If you look at today's writers, can you find someone who's delivering page for page the way I am? It's hard to find.
Explore the life of a "Gold Digger".......2003-07-02
The Rules meets The Happy Hooker is how I would describe this book.
The Millennium Girl offers insight into the underground world of Gold Diggers, how to meet and please a "Walletman", the cities needed to Tour to meet the rich and become a kept woman.
Bodecia aka Bo comes from meager beginnings in Cleveland, OH. The classic low self esteem issue resulting from an absent father and bad experiences with boys during her teenage years results in Bo becomming a "working girl" for survival. She goes to all the best parties, wears the best clothes and stays in the best hotels.
The Millenium Girl will explain the difference between a Hooker and a Gold Digger. The author, Coerte VW Felske (surprisingly is a male) investigated this phenomenom in depth which will shock you.
Bo decides that she wants to find love, but is uncertain if she can leave her past behind.
The Millennium Girl is fresh, funny, & original........2002-05-02
Golddigging Bodicea Lashley tells her story of living off of men's favors and shares her hard and fast rules for golddigging. She has defined an age window of between 20-30 years old to secure her future and land a man with big "bank."
Of particular fun are the Indian-American monikers Bodacia coins for the other golddiggers: Travels With Men; No Deposit, No Return; Operation: I Do; and Every Little Bit Helps. I enjoyed the smart relationship between Bodicea and her best friend Napoleon.
The tight plot for Millennium Girl gets an extra big thanks for not being predictable; Bodicea's ultimate fate is anybody's guess. Will she land her Walletman or overplay her hand? Felske does not tip us off.
Bodicea jumps off the page as one of the strongest and most sure-footed heroines I have seen in a long while. Felske creates a heroine with formidable savvy and wit. I was amazed at how well Felske channels the voice and perspective of a twenty-seven year old woman. Wow. I thought that the human interactions played out realistically...except for Bo's relationship with her sister and with Jasper at the end of the story.
I was going to give this story four stars: even though this book has a strong showing the ending is uneven and bumpy. But on reflection, Bodicea's luminescent hotel harangue puts this story over the top for me. There are moments of sheer brilliance in this story-- I look forward to reading Coerte Felske's backlist. I recently read Franzen's The Corrections. In comparison, The Millennium Girl came off as just more effortlessly brilliant to me and with better pacing.
This novel is similar to Jay McInerney's '80s timepiece Story of My Life. If you like one you'll enjoy the other.
Fun, a little long and sometimes unfocused.......2001-11-24
The narrator is well-developed, although some of her motivations, e.g. w.r.t. her niece and Brunei, were weak. Sometimes the characters lectured, seeming to show only the depth of research the author did on his subject, not anything necessary to further the plot. Also, although the story was told in the first person, it was like she was flesh and everyone else cardboard. Everyone spoke like a preacher, albeit an unorthodox one, and some dialogue went on forever. I do wish the story would have been shorter. And yes, it did seem like considering she had "grown up fast," she should have wised up more quickly. With these problems, you might think I would give it fewer stars, but I have to say this about this book - I got through it.

The Princess is a hard-hitting New Millennium guide for women.
Book Description
The decipherment of Linear B by Michael Ventris some fifty years ago is the equivalent in the humanities of Crick and Watson's discovery of the structure of DNA. Today it belongs in the same rare class as Champollion's decipherment of Egyptian hieroglyphs in the nineteenth century. The earliest European writing system that we can understand, Linear B dates from the middle of the second millennium BC. It was rediscovered by Sir Arthur Evans, the archaeologist who excavated clay tablets bearing this ancient script at Knossos in Crete in 1900. Obsessed with cracking Linear B, Evans kept the tablets to himself for some forty years but made little progress. After his death, other scholars tackled the decipherment, but it wasn't until 1952 that the secret was penetrated. Linear B was not an unknown language such as Minoan or Etruscan but actually an archaic dialect of Greek, more than five hundred years older than the Greek of Homer. Michael Ventris's later collaborator, the Cambridge classicist John Chadwick, told the story in his famous book, The Decipherment of Linear B (1958). But what of the man behind the decoding? Here Chadwick's book is exceptionally reticent, because in truth he hardly knew Ventris. Based upon hundreds of unpublished letters and other sources, including Chadwick's papers, Andrew Robinson's biography is the first book to tell the story of both the decipherment of Linear B and the man who broke the code. His research reveals a most intriguing person: a dazzling polyglot with an unorthodox upbringing and socialist tendencies who was also extremely private and lacking in confidence, and who died in a mysterious car crash in 1956 at the age of thirty-four. Ventris trained successfully as an architect, and his design methods shaped his decipherment work. But it was his hobby, Linear B, that would make him immortal. 20 b/w illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing biography.......2007-09-19
This is a book about a great achievement and a great man, but it is also a deeply frustrating account of both. It purports to be about Michael Ventris, the man who deciphered Linear B and showed it to be archaic Greek, and only secondarily about the details of the decipherment and what it revealed about the Mycenaean world. In fact the book is best on the details of the decipherment and rather poor on the details of Ventris's life. On the Mycenaean world it is almost non-existent. Robinson does a good job of bringing the architectural career of Ventris out of the shadows, and even linking it up to the decipherment, but the book is so sketchy about the facts of Ventris's marriage and the life of his parents that this can't really count as an account of Ventris's life at all. When did his father die and what did he die of?; what caused his parents to divorce?; why was Ventris's wife so chronically uninterested in his devotion to the decipherment?; what were her interests, and who were her friends? -- the list of unanswered questions goes on and on.
The great revelation of the book -- from a biographical point of view -- is that Ventris's death, at the height of his fame, was very likely suicide. Robinson is too reticent to say it that baldly but he lays out the facts and allows the reader to draw the obvious conclusion. But when he left home that night at midnight, only to crash, one hour later, into a parked truck on a road he had no reason to be on, at high speed, there is so much that the reader wants to know that this book will not tell. Had he and his wife quarelled? They were clearly not close by that point, so had she asked for a divorce? Why did she think he left the house at that hour? In fact the figure of Lois Ventris is shadowy beyond all belief. For large parts of the story I wondered if they were still married. There are no good photographs of her; there are no good photographs of his children; there are no photographs of the house that he designed and built; there are no photographs of any of his other design projects.
And the book has some strange biases as well. When Ventris fell out with Myres and Kolber, Ventris reported this at the time as a `huge row' -- presumably with Kolber alone. But Robinson presents his subsequent letter as evidence of a fatal weakness of personality that would manifest again, shortly before his death. What it rather looks to be evidence of is Kolber's unpleasant personality, and Ventris's reaction to it, nothing more. He gracefully withdrew from a project he knew he could not be part of. And what was driving his later withdrawal from his architecture research position looks to be entirely unconnected.
This reader also felt that the non-academic Robinson was entirely too enamoured of the genius, non-academic Ventris doing things that the plodding academics could only dream of. One very quickly wearies of tales of just how dull and unimaginative the academics of Oxford and beyond are. There is the music of axes being ground here. And Robinson is too inclined to set up a straw man of logic versus the flights of imagination in scientific discovery: he seems to have no idea that he is saying something that everyone knows and knows all too well.
So all in all this is a good book, but one that makes you wish that it were twice as good as it is. And now that this "biography" has come out I doubt that we will have a chance for a second book that might have answered the questions that this book leaves so frustratingly unanswered.
Entertaining enough, if not essential reading.......2007-02-16
THE MAN WHO DECIPHERED LINEAR B is, as far as I can tell, the only biography of Michael Ventris. The book covers it all, from his childhood, through his World War II service and early family life, to the days of the decipherment and finally his disillusionment with the subject and early death in an automobile accident.
As a student of linguistics with much interest in the earliest Indo-European languages, I have long been familiar with data from Mycenaean Greece in syllabic transcription. However, I didn't know how Ventris came to breaking the original script. Robinson's biography is therefore a fine resource. At 160 pages, it gives an overview of the life of Ventris and how he cracked the code without wearing out its welcome on a reader still more interested in grammar than in cryptography. Robinson also fascinatingly puts Ventris' life in context, speaking about some of his more notable peers at school, his 15 minutes of fame in the layman's media, and his achievements as an architect.
The decipherment of Linear B is presented in admirably simple terms, sure to prove understand to anyone who is already educated enough to have developed an interest in the topic. The book is liberally sprinkled with figures, from facsimiles of tables to Ventris's own charts. As Robinson is writing for an audience, however, who doesn't necessarily understand Greek, this reader trained in the language found several points where Robinson could have entertainingly expanded on points had he focused on those with knowledge of Greek.
While I wouldn't say that familiarity with Ventris' life is a must for those whose work somehow involves writing systems or Mycenaean Greek, Robison's biography is entertaining enough. The stories of the crotchety scholars who resisted the outsider Ventris' discovers to the point of embarassing themselves is sure to tickle readers aware of the uneasy society within academia.
The archictec who cracked the code.......2004-03-15
The Man who deciphered Linear B - the story of Michael Ventris, by Andrew Robinson, is a book about the monumental task involved in the decoding and understanding what was written in the 1.200 BC clay tablets found by sir Arthur Evans in 1900 in the island of Crete, the home of the fabled character Minotaur. Many were the obstacles imposed on the many scholars who ventured to crack down the code, to no avail to the great majority of them. The most conspicuos hindrance was the fact that, contrary to what happened in the case of the deciphering of the Egyptian hieroglyphs by the French mathematician Jean-François Champollion, there was not a handy Rosetta Stone with bilinguals, that is, with texts to be confuted both in the language to be decoded as in an already known language (Greek, in the case of the Rosetta Stone). To add to the difficulty, the discoverer of the first tablets, Mr.Arthru Evans, was not the team-work type of man, preferring to work alone and hiding from the others scholars almost all the pertinent tablets.
So, the deciphering of the so-called Minoan Linear B scripts was a task compared in its difficulty to the first escalation of Mount Everest and to the discovery of the structure of DNAs, all of them happened in the very same year the professional architect and amateur scholar Michael Ventris announced having first cracked the Minoan code, in 1953. The fundamental enigma was what was the language beneath the Linear B sillabary (different from an alphabet, a sillabary represents pictorally sometimes in just one design syllab sounds, e.g, me, fe, ra, etc.). To everyone's amazement , and even to Michael Ventris himself, who had for a long time contended that the hidden language was Etruscan, a Greek ancient dialect was there all the time, masquaraded by a somewhat similar Cypriot sillabary.
The book has all the ingredients of a best-seller and it is a case in point for the preponderance of group work as against the work of mavericks as Arthur Evans. It is also a proof that Natura non facit saltum and that the Eureka cry not always comes from the ones who are in the front line of research, coming instead from people at the second rank as was the case of Ventris, an architec by formation and practice, who now and then made a dive in that type of reserch. His mixture of intuition and knowledge of the many areas involved proved to be the right one to the cracking of the code. Also, the premature death of Michael Ventris at the age of 34 is a mysterious event that to some people repeats the death by suicide of his depressive Polish and beloved mother ; one has also to remember that the Greek alphabet used today was only used since circa 800 BC, surrounded by the many uncertainties regarding the oral background of Homer works like the Odissey and the Illiad. Was the discovery of such material in Crete and afterwards in mainland Greece to expand the range of research of Greek antiquity?
This is a very good book to anyone interested in the peculiarities of genial men like Michael Ventris and in the origin of languages.
None is so blind ..........2003-06-30
Ancient Egyptians were not secretive. They carved their story in stone, using a sylllabary because the alphabet hadn't been invented, A syllabary is a set of symbols for each of the numerous sylllables; Japanese and Koreans today write mainly in syllabaries; for example, Japanese has one symbol for "KA," a different symbol for "NA" and another for "DA." There are 50-some in Japanese, which is more than the 26 letters we find it convenient to read. Syllabaries are basically phonetic; Egypt's ancient writing system was forgetten for centuries, until a clever Frenchman realized that it was not picture-writing. He discovered the symbols for "CLE" "O" "PA" and "TRA" - and voila, the past came alive!
Ventris realized that "secret" writing found in ancient Crete was actually Greek, using a forgotten sylllabary. Sadly, academic blindness (jealousy) darkened his short life. He wanted to be an architect.

Customer Reviews:
Great illustrations!.......2003-06-25
I loved this book when I was a child. The pictures are great, with close-ups, arrows pointing things out and detailed diagrams of various things. It's fun to look at all the details. I also had Something Queer at the Library and thought it was just as good.
Recently, on a trip to my parents house, I found this book and brought it home to read to my almost two-year-old daughter. She loves it! She keeps making me read it over and over again. She likes to imitate Gwen tapping her braces and Jill poking Gwen. (She even says "poke poke poke" to me as she pokes me.) She won't let me read her the Something Queer at the Library book because she is so intrigued by this one.
It's really a timeless book. Though it was published in 1973, it still feels very up-to-date, especially since Jill has a working mother. I love that my daughter loves it as much as me.
High Interest Low Difficulty.......1999-12-13
As a child, I loved all of the Something Queer books. When I found copies at a used book sale, I bought them for my classroom. Several of my students also enjoyed these books. In particular, the students who had difficulty with reading enjoyed these excellent stories which have relatively easy text. They often read them again and again.
My favorite children's book........1999-04-12
I read this book as a child and have never forgotten how much I loved it. I am purchasing a hardcover copy for every little person in my life.
Top drawer kids book!.......1998-07-02
This was one of my favorite books growing up. A very entertaining story and exceptional illustrations make this clever book a must for any parent wishing to give their child something different to read. I suppose "different" is a good way to describe it and why it remains near the top of the books I had as a kid.
Customer Reviews:
A humorous mystery for kids.......2001-12-16
One of my favorite childhood books was "Something Queer Is Going On," which combined a story by Elizabeth Levy with the illustrations of Mordicai Gerstein. The book's copyright date is 1973, and it was reissued as a Dell Young Yearling in 1982. I can distinctly remember reading the book aloud to my two younger sisters in the 1970s.
SQIGO tells the story of Jill, a young girl who arrives home from school to discover that Fletcher, her lovable bassett hound, is missing. She and her friend Gwen team up to solve this vexing mystery.
SQIGO is genuinely suspenseful, and also sensitive to Jill's anxiety. But mainly this book is a laugh riot. Levy writes witty dialogue, and Gerstein loads up his illustrations with hilarious sight gags. Fletcher himself is, to me, one of the most memorable visual characterizations in children's lit: with his stubby tail, droopy eyes, and big floppy ears, he is an endearing carictature of his breed.
Don't worry; SQIGO has a happy ending. This is a great book which deserves to be discovered by a new crop of readers.

Something FUN Is Going On!.......2003-12-01
While visiting my mother's house for Thanksgiving last week, she pulled this book out to give to me, remarking on how much I'd loved it as child. I am SO THRILLED to have it again! I thought of it over the years every time I saw a basset hound. The illustrations really stuck with me all this time, especially the one with the dog on the steps, tongue molded down a few steps. This book is a classic, and I can't wait until my daughter is old enough to enjoy it. Now I'm going to check out the rest of the books in the series!
I loved this series!.......2000-12-04
As a child I loved this series of "mystery" books featuring Jill and her best friend Gwen, who always carried her junior detective kit with her. In this story, Jill's droopy dog is kidnapped and the two scour the neighborhood for clues until the mystery is solved by tracking the kidnapper to a TV studio.
The illustrations are a delight, all punctuated with amusing captions. I sincerely hope this series is not lost forever, I would like to stock up for when I have children.

The Pain relief hand book........2001-04-06
This is a very informative and useful book. The reader is given many useful techniques in dealing with chronic pain. It doesn't have all the answers but it does not claim to either.
It starts off by telling the reader not to read the book form cover to cover but to dip into the more useful areas first - such as relaxation and coping with pain. I did this initially and found it so useful that I then read the whole book.
Anyone who suffers with pain should consider reading this and keeping it as a good reference book.

Book Description
Now, in her own words, the most dynamic vocal talent of our time-the international singing sensation whose recordings have sold millions, and whose performances electrify the world's great arenas-gives us her poignant, intimate, and inspiring life story . . . from the heart.
She was born into a working-class Canadian family, the youngest of fourteen children. She gave her first performance standing on a kitchen table and dreamed of becoming a superstar. Few in her field can rival the phenomenal God-given abilities of Celine Dion. Fewer still have experienced the love, sorrow, accomplishment, and ecstasy that have shaped her remarkable life and carried her to the pinnacle of the entertainment world.
In Celine Dion: My Story, My Dream Celine takes us backstage, on the road, into the recording studio, and behind the scenes to reveal the hard work that creates the magic. But her book, much more than a chronicle of early breakthroughs and professional high-water marks, of unforgettable encounters with the luminaries and legends of show business is, first and foremost, a story of love.
This talented and beautiful woman who has moved us with her singing now moves us with her words as she tells of growing up in a large, close-knit household fortified in its daily struggles by powerful bonds of heartfelt affection and the family tragedies their shared love enabled them to overcome. Here, also, Celine recounts warmly and intimately the storybook romance that remains her most enduring passion and greatest joy: Celine's marriage to Rene Angelil her manager and soul mate. She tells of the devastating pain they both experienced when a doctor informed them that Rene had cancer, and how fighting the disease together helped strengthen their relationship. And she shares her joy, anxiety, and breathless anticipation of the impending fulfillment of their most cherished dream: parenthood.
A true story of courage, perseverance, dedication, and devotion--told with the wide-eyed honesty of someone who, though she has basked in the glowing adoration of millions of fans, has never lost touch with her working-class roots--Celine Dion: My Story, My Dream is for anyone who has ever wondered about the real person behind the magnificent voice. Touching and funny, fascinating and uplifting, it is an exquisitely detailed portrait of a remarkable woman who has never backed away from a challenge . . . even the most daunting challenges of the heart.

Not what I thought it would be...........2007-07-21
From someone who is a huge fan of Celine's music - from her early work to her most recent, this book was not what I was expecting.
It was a very easy read - almost like a fairytale. It was great thru the beginning of the book, but even her adult years were portrayed like they were thru the eyes of a small child. This doesn't bode well for my opinion of Celine as an adult, who spends half the book trying to assert her independence "because Rene wouldn't want me that way" if she didn't.
As for the love story between her and Rene - again, I liked the early years. She admitted she didn't think much of him when she met him- hey, she was just a kid then. Talked about Anne Marie, etc. What this book is missing is things like how she dealt with breaking their relationship to his adult children, how she relates to them good and bad, and how she justifies such great lengths for a child with a man who has already raised two.
Again, this story seems to brush over these kinds of topics in favor of defending Rene. We didn't read the book for Rene, we read it for her. She was real about her childhood. Not so real about her adult life.
Revealing, truthful, eye-opening book on Celine Dion By Herself........2006-12-29
I did find this book to be enjoyable at times and boring in parts as well:
I found Celine's early years of family/homelife interesting and oh my did she and her mother (her siblings as well) worked their butts off (and her manager/now husband Rene) to get Celine to where she is today.
I think the reader might take the "I'm rich and I deserve it" the wrong way (maybe the French translation into English). Yes, she admits she is rich and yes she does talk about decorating homes and her fairytale wedding and renewing her vows, but I she realizes that she grew up poor and to give back, etc (she gave her siblings $$, etc).
I found Celine to be heartfelt and truthful. She admits she doesn't hide "things" from the press/friends (such as fertility problems), she admits that she was kind of spoiled growing up, and she did finally come out and tell the world she was in love with her manager Rene.
Around the age of 17 or so (earlier maybe) Celine describes her "fantasies" and movies she made up in her head about her manager Rene. She realized she was in "love" with him. I think she went a little in detail,(this sometimes gets boring), etc. I don't know what to think of it. Rene maybe didn't realize or didn't want to realize her attraction to him and his to her (he goes away to fix his marriage which ends up in divorce, his 2nd wife was fed up with this workaholic/gambling ways). When she was 18 I think it offical came out between the two of them that they were "in love." Rene and her mother do question the 26 year age difference (and the twice divorce thing as well). What I took out of the "love" relationship is it is extremely power and important to her and age doesn't make a difference.
Celine outlines that she indeed is strong and independent and Rene did guide her on the path of stardom but she is more than capible in making her own decisions.
All in all an ok book. it seems unfinished, and rushed little, and it needs a sequel. It leaves off during her pregnancy. I think the real meaning could have gotten lost in translation from French to English as well.
Anyway an ok read and I read it in a few days and I'm a die-hard Celine Fan!
That's my review for celine Dion, My Story, My Dream.
Loved her story, her writings, her experience & perspective!.......2006-06-12
I am ofcourse in love with Celine Dion, so I was a bit biased at first. Reading this book took me through her life from the very start, and through her stardom. Her love with Rene Angelil, her feelings for this man 26 years her senior, her view of the world, of popularity, of discipline most of all, and of her working hard and intense attitude, I fell in love with her all over again. I can't recommend the book enough, but then again, you have to love Celine the way I do to appreciate her book as much!! :)
Good, but write a sequel!.......2004-03-28
When she finishes the book, she's finally become pregnant. She wishes it to be a little girl, because she feels that a little boy would be cold to her. She did end up having a little boy. I would like to see how this has worked with her career, her time at Caesar's Palace, and her fathers death. Many of the stories in her book are very touching, but she tends to be on the melodramatic side more times then not. I have to agree with the reviewer who wrote that it was disturbing to read about her ideas of seducing Rene Angelil when she was 14. Rene and Celine have a beautiful love story, but at 14 that would be wrong, and it feels invading to read it. She does come across as a diva in many points, but all of these shortcomings are minor compared to the wonderful story she writes.
Amazing Woman..........2004-03-12
I bought this book as a gift for John - although we are both huge fans of Celine Dion's. Her voice is amazing, but she has a rare quality in her personality that made me buy the book to discover more. I didn't read the book for over a year, but when I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. It was extremely well written.
I was so interested to learn of the role that David Foster had in her American recordings. David Foster is a master with talent. He also has introduced the world to Josh Groban. It is my utmost hope that Celine and Josh will do many duets and shows together. It isn't just their voices - it's their personalities. They are both confident, but they are both so unpretentious as well.
I was awed by the strength of Celine and her family. What a unique environment to grow up in! Additionally, Celine seems so honest about her life - both the good and the bad.
I was amazed at the details regarding her husband, Rene. Amazed that Celine had such a love for this man that it triumphed over YEARS when he repeatedly "rejected" her. She was famous and could have had any number of boyfriends, but instead her heart wouldn't allow her to love anyone but Rene. I believe that Rene was MEANT to be with Celine and her family; that he truly didn't begin to live until he met them. Likewise, I think that Celine is everything that she is because of Rene. Not just her voice, but her looks, style, education, etc.
Celine, a "homewrecker?" Give me a break! She was 14 and mesmerized by a cultured, attractive, genius agent who put her first in his life. I don't think that any marriage could have survived when one woman becomes such an obsession as Rene wanted the whole world to hear Celine. And in all fairness, the marriage had been over for a long time before he finally made love to her at 20. To me it is one of the greatest love stories of our time!!
Rene groomed Celine to become the woman she is. And he is her whole world. What man could resist this? Personally, I think he should feel as though he is the luckiest man in the world to have the love and loyalty of this gifted, funny, and amazing woman.

Customer Reviews:
Everything you wanted to know-- in fact, too much.......2006-05-07
My main criticism of this book is that it contains simply too much information. The indefatigable Irving includes much boring information on Goebbels, which bloats the book to a staggering 750 pages. This is especially true during the Kampfzeit in the 1920's, where every move, drive, nap and reverie is dutifully recorded by the author. It becomes almost ludicrous and it's tedious to wade through such extraneous information in order to get to the heart of the matter. Had Irving culled the biography to a neat 400 pages, the results would have been pleasing. As it stands, the book is compromised by a plethora of useless, trivial facts.
However, there are some fascinating new revelations here, and anything new in a book on Nazi leaders is a coup. Goebbels relates that Hitler in the 20's was anything but the ascetic, uptight and sexually repressed person he's been depicted as in so many other inferior books. Goebbels constantly scribbles in his diary that Hitler's rampant womanzing was jeopardizing the party.
And what of Goebbels notorious reputation as a lady killer? Incredibly, Irving misses the boat here and inexplicably claims Goebbels was a virgin until he married Magda in 1931. Never mind that there are boatloads of evidence to show Goebbels had numerous love affairs before his marriage, and dozens afterwards. Irving also sides with Goebbels in his long dispute with Leni Riefenstahl, which Leni aptly detailed in her memoirs.
I've always admired Irving as a researcher and one able to dig out little-known nuggets. But increasingly he throws in ludicrous opinions which are contrary to fact (to put it mildly). Goebbels was obviously fanatically anti-Semitic, but this doesn't fit into Irving's M.O., so he claims Goebbels used anti-Semitism solely as a "political device." By this time, the reader is wishing the book would come to a conclusion, after 700+ pages of unnecessary detail and some truly tedious asides.
After 40 years of writing on the subject, Irving should have learned he needs an editor, especially with this offering. In addition, he needs to reign in his ridiculous political opinions which needlessly compromise an otherwise reasonable book. It's hard to praise a biography where the author believes Goebbels didn't despise the Jews and merely used them as a political pawn. It's not only delusional, it's bad history.
HEAD AND SHOULDERS ABOVE THE REST, MORE REVELATIONS THAN ANY OTHER GOEBELS BIOGRAPHY.......2006-02-03
This is an incredible biography of Goebbels. Irving was the first to translate the missing portions of Goebbels own diaries, which lay hidden for decades in the cold war Soviet union files. Making a nonsense of many histories of the Nazi era, Irving has come up with a priceless work.
The internal rivalries of Nazism are fascinatingly revealed, Goebbells spiting vitriol about rivals Goring, the Strasser brothers, and occasionally the fuhrer himself. Debunking the myths of kristallnacht, Irving shows Goebbels to be the orchestrator of the violence against Jews and their businesses, much to their rage of Hitler and the other Nazi leaders, who called an immediate hault to their mayhem.
On a personal level, Goebbels comes across as an intriguing, often bizarre individual. Afflicted with a club foot, and of Gandhi-esque proportion - 5 feet 4 and barely 100lb. One of the most intellectual of Nazis, his formative years were a mix of academic achievements and periods of poverty inbetween. Irving portrays these years vividly, against the backdrop of WW1 and the years afterwards.
In other works, Dr Goebbels is portrayed as a lifelong womaniser, in this biography the peculiar and complicated evolution he goes through belies this notion. Though having numnerous 'girlfriends' in his Univiversity years, the Doctor conducted these intense relationships on a platonic basis, only losing his virginity in hie early 30's.
To touch on even a fraction of the themes worth reading in this book would take hours. It offers a deeply personal portrait of the man himself, but also reveals a greater depth on the Nazi era, both individual events and the time as a whole.
worth reading.......2004-12-29
rediculous that people have to systematically review all his books with the same garbage about his "lies"
see what germans say about his work!
get off your American Propaganda please!
this is an attempt at exposing goebells that isn't American/British Biased like every other work that comes out of these countries...
some people aren't interested in the holocaust aspects, just the factual history of the third reich and a particular writer's opinion on it... people can publish what they want, if you don't like it, DONT READ IT
He has the right to write and you have the right not to read
should we ban Mein Kampf too? or Karl Marx works? or the Protocols of the wise men of zion?
Europe's Machiavelli.......2004-05-17
It's amusing in the extreme to see so many people froth at the mouth over David Irving. If he is "so discredited," why is he thrown such a fit about? The fact of the matter is that history should never be written about until fifty years after the occurences in question.
Remember, Watergate was first derided as lunatic conspiracy theory, and one that eventually toppled Richard M. Nixon...
Here, Irving neither "apologizes" for Nazi Germany or its architects, nor does he simply goose-step in unison with the current gospel according to the cereal box. What he has done was to obtain 1,200 plates of glass upon which were written heretofore unavailable Goebbels diaries entries, that were "missing" when Louis Lochner released his work of Goebbels' diaries circa 1943-1945, and utilize them to take the reader into the mind of the man who was Hitler's "false prophet."
A brilliant portrait of a perverse, twisted and sad soul that impacted the world in an (ultimately) destructive fashion.
I suggest you read, and judge for yourself.
I suggest you read, and decide for yourself.
its fiction, not history.......2001-11-19
Unfortunately, this interesting bit of history relies on fictional details to support its larger claims. There is documentation about the falsities in this volume that came to light at David Irvings libel trial in London that removes any value to this book other than the interesting and fascinating way that Mr. Irving is able to weave his stories. If you like other WWII fiction you might enjoy this. If you are looking for REAL history then you are better off reading Goebbels diary entries in their original German than relying on David Irvings misguided attempt to channel the Third Reichs thinkers in this book.
