Not memorable.......2007-07-12
This book provides the kind of insight you have likely heard from several sources. It is good to repetitively hear about how your outward appearance and persona effect the climate around you, but the types of people who read these books are typically the types of people who already practice this stuff.
I feel that this is a positive book. I also feel that this was a waste of money.
Sometimes the solutions are obvious.......2005-01-10
I am always trying to absorb as many viewpoints as I can on the important subject of coaching. My role involves coaching of senior leaders and my own team, so the title of this book urged me to pick it up and read it. However, I was surprised to find that despite the title, this book is really geared towards self reflection and self awareness of ones own opportunities.
The book really gets into depth in examining style. For example, the author looks at the FedEx model of leadership and the nine elements of "style". (Page 37) The book looks at case studies, and how our own personal psychology holds us back. Included are dozens of pages of person questions to answer which are designed to allow for self reflection of what in our lives drives us, and may hinder our ability to effectively perform.
Throughout the book are business case studies, tips, and insights too numerous to list. Among the more impactful are the sections on how to improve communications by slowing down, use of silence and pausing for effect. (Page 136) Also, one can always benefit from a better control of the "minutiae of acting" (Page 145). The author examines how the little aspects of posture, dress, and facial expressions, may impact a leader's effectiveness. While much of this is obvious, the book uses some fascinating examples of how these elements of our "presentation" have bigger impacts than we realize. I personally learned a few new things, despite how frequently I have studied this factor of interpersonal relationships.
The latter sections cover emotional intelligence, something very important to all leaders. Not much new here, but the topic itself is vital to effective leadership, and gets more important the higher the level and responsibility of the position.
Overall, a very useful book. The author uses examples from Pepsi-Co and even names a person I knew while working there. The opportunity for self reflection by completing the pages of questions would be invaluable, and I will go back and complete them myself when time allows. Highly recommended for anyone in a leadership position, or responsible for providing coaching to senior leaders.
Star Secrets Here.......2004-11-26
Benton has the trust of many corporate CEOs. This book shows how she earned it. So many of here secrets are easy to understand, yet they aren't common sense either.
Top Marks.......2003-03-01
As I am putting together a reading list for our management team, this book stands out as one that will be of great value for all managers, old and new. So it's on my list. I give it top marks and highly suggest it.
outdated quick fix recipes for success.......2001-11-03
I am amazed that this type of writing still gets interest. After reading really meaningful books on this subject, like Stephen Covey's 7 Habits or Tom Crane's The Heart of Coaching, I find no place for books that treat this topic with the recipe approach.
After devouting a whole chapter to sell the idea of proffesional coaching, Benton goes on to cite herself incessantly on successful actions she did for herself. She tries to make her points through self refference and other minor examples and cases.
Honestly, I think there are numerous books on this matter out there that really deserve attention. Not this one

Exquisite.......2007-05-13
This book has the most exquisite photography and a very, very nice assortment of patterns.
Fine Gauge Knitting.......2005-10-09
This book is has many designs devoted to fine gauge knitting, from fingering to DK. The designs are classic and there are well crafted close-ups of details for each sweater. It's a pleasure to see a book with fine gauge yarns for adult women.
Lovely pullovers, tunics, and even the usually-dull cardigan sweater can be changed radically through pattern and yarn choice.......2005-10-07
Can the basic sweater pattern be changed into gorgeous, quick-knit garments which are fun to wear? Yes: especially if they can be transformed through different yarn types and pattern stitches, as in Perfectly Brilliant Knits. Lovely pullovers, tunics, and even the usually-dull cardigan sweater can be changed radically through pattern and yarn choice: these knits are anything but ordinary.
Preferred the other book.......2005-09-01
I keep looking at this book hoping to find something I want to make. Of course, it's a matter of taste, but I just don't really like anything here except the white halter top with openwork front. But it's in doubled cotton on thick needles - true, I'm lazy, and don't buy yarn if it needs anything below a 6! But a thick halter top is unwearable in the summer heat.
Anyway, I regret buying this book. The other one has a few patterns I like - especially the rib vest and rib sweater and the drop two top. This one has less cool stuff. Cable lovers will like it though, as will lovers of long sweaters. As before, lots of very colourful and some quite flamboyant designs. As to be expected from someone who models her own poncho in an ad for her shop in one of the most famous knitting mags.
One thing I found strange - a few too many ponchos, and not one shrug. Hello! Where's the logic in that?
(I just hope the binding doesn't fall apart like her first book - such a drag!)
Perfectly Brilliant Knits.......2005-08-21
Melissa and Sheryl have been doing great work but this is their best book of sweater designs yet! I particularly like their jacket patterns and the fuschia pullover pattern.
Styles are easy and relatively fast to knit yet creative. I also think that Melissa's points are a hoot.

Sellers Inflating Book Rating.......2007-09-23
I own this book and personally I think the sellers are inflating the rating of this book. It is nowhere near magnificent. It is a good casual read, but I think there could be much better. The layout is confusing and at times inconsistent and incorrect. In fact, the catalog of Scriabin's works at the end of the book is not even complete. I would caution anyone to go to your local library and check out this book first before you spend over $100 for it. I bought it when it was in print and on sale for under $20 and that might even have been too much to spend.
Scriabin for normal people.......2004-01-26
The book is rich in facts and documents, you find there most if not all the important dates, places, pieces and persons. Scriabin's personal letters bring him very close to the reader - sometimes even uncomfortably close. Young creative persons reading that could lose their motivation to get famous - not everybody wants his or her private letters to be published like this. After reading this book it becomes nearly impossible to be as successful as Scriabin himself in ignoring his human weaknesses.
In this book we find some translated poems of Scriabin, including the "Poem of Ecstasy", describing in poetic language the same spiritual process as his Symphony #4 (Op.54) under the same name. Compared to this great music having many good recordings and easy to find in Internet, the text is almost forgotten by general public - it took some years for me to dig out the text in its original Russian language.
About Scriabin's philosophy and mysticism Bowers gives us the facts and citations with a slightly ironical bystander's smile. He understands Scriabin's seeking for ecstasy and the "I am God" thing that are so easy to confuse with escapism and "mania grandiosa". But he does not share Scriabin's exalted feelings and fails every hope of dedicated fans to serve this God together. Author of the biography is honest enough not to pretend that he has understood every little thing in Scriabin's ideas. He also avoids the primitive freudism that is too often seen in biographies. I recommend this book for every enthusiast of Scriabin who is not afraid of unveiled reality.
Magnificent - a lovingly crafted insight.......2000-07-19
A lovingly crafted insight into one of the greatest of musical minds. Extensive excerpts from letters, postcards, and notebooks yields a startling account of Scriabins progression from child prodigy to poet, philosopher, and composer. However this is not just a biography, it's presentation is akin to a Scriabin Sonata, with structure yet diversity and surprise. A joy for all music lovers and a must for Scriabin fans.

A Window into 19th Century Russia.......1998-12-29
Mr. Bower's biography of Scriabin is more than a biography. It is at the same another window into the life of the more priviledged classes of prerevolutionary Russia before WWI...a virtual syllabus of names and personalities to be investigated in further readings. It is a lively illustration of a lost culture, a worthwhile addition to the cultural picture painted in Massey's THE FIREBIRD.

What My Grandparents Wouldn't Tell Me.......2007-03-09
My grandparents shielded me from this part of their lives in Russia by refusing to answer my questions about "the old country" when I was a child. This book helped me understand the terrible part of my heritage which I knew was there yet not in such a graphic way.
Faith and survival in revolutionary Russia.......2005-07-14
For Jews in pre-revolutionary Russia, to be drafted in Czar Nicholas' army could be a death warrant. Not only did one have to suffer a seven-year commitment to servitude, but one had to suffer overt anti-Semitism--the kind that swept villages and left hundreds dead in their wake.
Thus it is understandable that a key figure in this non-fiction tale--Israel Abramson, the author's father--chose to pull out some teeth and sever the tendons of several toes to avoid the dreaded service. He came to the little shtetle of Talne in Ukraine to manage Boris Petrofsky's drugstore after Boris was drafted. There in the Pale of Settlement--the area to which Russian Jews were confined from 1794 to 1917--he met Manya Polevois and her family.
It was the fall of 1917, six months after Czar Nicholas had been ousted and replaced by the Socialist provisional government. Socialist Alexander Kerensky and Prince Lvov were running Russia's World War I effort, which was going badly. The Russians were losing, and young boys were ruthlessly drafted and sent to the front without training or experience to die.
In October, Lenin returned to Russia, and in November, Ukraine's parliament refused to turn over power to the Bolshviks, establishing instead the Ukrainian National Republic. For the first time in their history, Ukraine's Jews were promised a measure of freedom, but instead, pogroms followed.
In March 1918, Russia and Germany signed the treaty of Brest-Litovsk, in which Russia conceded Ukraine to the Germans. Israel, fearful of pogroms, came running to the Polevois family for assurance. Just then the German officers walked in and commandeered the Polevois home. They remained until November, 1918, when Germany conceded Ukraine to Russia and the forces of Simon Petlura. In the armed Ukrainian-Russian conflict that followed, Petlura's soldiers conducted wholesale massacres of Jews.
The bright spot that year in Talne were the weddings of Ruchel Polevois, to a Pavlusha in early May, and of Manya to Israel Abramson, on May 30, 1918. As a wedding gift, Yosel Polevois gave a fully stocked drugstore in nearby Manistritch to his son-in-law. The summer was idyllic, but by the following spring, pogroms struck again.
I will not reveal the rest of this dramatic story for young adults, but it was after many ordeals and still more pogroms that Manya and Israel determined to flee to America.
The book tells the frightening tale of anti-Semitism in early twentieth century Russia and Ukraine--very well.
--Alyssa A. Lappen
A Jewish family's survival in the Russian revolution........1997-11-04
This is a book that tells a rare story...the Russian revolution and a Jewish family's fight for survival in pogrom torn Ukraine. There are not many books that cover this subject, and Bettyanne Gray tells it better than most. It has the flavor of the rural Russian shtetl lifestyle, while at the same time describes the destruction wrought on Jewish communities by the Red, White, and Ukrainian armies vying for supremacy during the revolution. A quick but very good read. END
