Book Description
The former U.S. Army captain Walter I. Farmer was stationed with the American Forces in Germany after WW II. In 1945, he worked hard to protect important European and German cultural heritage artifacts, such as paintings and sculptures, from being transported to the United States. Together with other officers of the U.S. Army, who took on this task, Farmer wrote the "Wiesbadener Manifest" which resulted in the artifacts remaining in Germany and they can still be seen in German museums today. In 1996, Farmer was awarded the "Bundesverdienstkreuz" for his outstanding work.
Besides being a personal account, this autobiography presents an important document of present-day history. It is completed by an extensive list of documents and archive material.

Book Description
In a society such as ours, when doing good is the stuff of legend and hagiography, Freedman's meticulous description of the constant struggle to be a good person and to do good for others is refreshing and bracing. It shows how good can triumph in spite of everything and should serve as an inspiration to all of us who would also wish to be good people and do good unto others.

A year in the life..........2004-12-09
One sees in this journal of a year (1999-2000) in the life of a religious Jew in Israel the timeless struggle of a man to know the good, and to do it. For Shalom Freedman the essential moral question is how does one act in accordance with true "derech eretz"? That is, how does one go about treating others with respect, consideration and compassion in accordance with "the will of God"?
It would seem that the Golden Rule of doing unto others as one would wish be done unto oneself would be a necessary and sufficient guide. Indeed in the Talmud it is written: "What is hateful to you do not do to your neighbor. That is the whole Torah. The rest is commentary." Freedman goes a bit beyond this; indeed his year-long "experiment" in derech eretz is that of a man seeking some kind of perfection of behavior toward his fellow human beings. Of course it can be said--and Freedman is well aware of this--that such an endeavor is itself a sign of something other than derech eretz. On the one hand, some people might find this an exercise in moral one-upmanship, while others might view it as delusive or even egocentric.
Yet the experiment, because it is published rather than private, takes on greater significance. To do good just for the sake of being good is perhaps just a gesture. But to do good with the intent of showing others what the struggle is all about, and to do this with real self-examination and then to share it with the world--such an intent lifts the entire enterprise to another level and justifies it.
The reader can ask (and I found it hard not to) "to what extent did Freedman succeed and to what extent does this publication itself further the cause of derech eretz?" Indeed, this is the question that I believe Shalom Freedman himself is asking. He writes, "I know that despite all my efforts in the past year, I have not helped people in any significant way." (p. 273)
This is perhaps too modest; and perhaps it is born of the terrible uncertainty that is the burden of Israelis, who live everyday knowing that the end of their struggle is nowhere in sight. While Freedman writes of his "intense concentration on the minor encounters of everyday life" (p. 273) all about him are momentous and violent events.
Again Freedman is well aware of this seeming disconnectedness. While he worries over whether he missed saying a kind word to a friend, or whether he gave enough to a beggar in the street, the state of Israel is in a life and death struggle for its survival. Yet--and this is the whole point of this venture--such things go hand in hand because the Jewish people cannot win the larger war and lose their soul (and neither can Americans, by the way), and derech eretz is at the very soul of any civilized society.
I must say however that I would not describe derech eretz as "doing the will of God" as Freedman does (p. 164). I am uneasy at being told what is the will of God, and I don't believe that other persons, regardless of how pious they may seem, can say what pleases or does not please God. But this is a complaint that I would register against any religion that imagines that God is personally involved in their daily lives. This is simply my belief. I wish Freedman and all the priests and preachers and other clerics would say instead that what is pleased is themselves and their view of life as taught in their traditions. To presume to speak for God grates on the ears and rankles the soul.
That point aside, I am in deep sympathy and in substantial accord with Freedman's beliefs. I believe, as many do, that charity not only begins at home, but that it is incumbent on us as human beings to treat those people around us with courtesy, consideration and compassion; and to fail in this is to fail in the most fundamental way as human beings. Indeed, if Freedman's example were universally followed, the world would overnight turn into something close to a heaven on earth. Alas, how far we are from such a world! And yet how little it would take from each and every human being to bring it about.
Freedman's moral struggle and self-examination make this a most interesting read, but I also gained from the insights into the daily lives of the religious Jews of Israel that Freedman provides. He steers a middle road between the ultra-Orthodox, who are largely out of tune with the modern world (in somewhat the same way that fundamentalist Christians and Muslims are), and the secular society that sometimes seems but an extension of the American mass culture.
Here are some examples of Freedman's fine spiritual insight:
"I know how it is when you are alone, and suddenly someone listens to you and makes you feel that you are a human being again." (p. 201)
"...[M]odesty, humility and walking humbly before God are the foundations of my faith." (p.206)
"Perhaps what I primarily mean by derech eretz is simple decency and kindness. In this sense, it is not something of which to make a big deal, but rather something that one does naturally and comes to expect of others, as basic civilized human behavior." (p. 51)
"...[T]here are those who, upon receiving offers of help, might come to hate those who are extending it, for they see in those people a freedom and power that they themselves do not possess." (p. 51)
And finally here's something that relates to post 9/11 United States: "The dilemma of how to maintain our strength while preserving our humanity is one that we are faced with all the time..." (p. 194)
Serving God by Serving Others.......2004-11-13
The Golden Rule shows up in one form or another in almost all religions. Religious books and leaders exhort us to follow that rule. But most of us find it hard to know what to do.
In Small Acts of Kindness, Shalom Freedman takes on the challenge to perform as many Godly acts towards others as he possibly can for a year during 1999 and 2000. The book is a journal that describes his daily efforts, successes, failures and thoughts about what he is accomplishing. Mr. Freedman's purpose is to help his fellow Israelis make Israel the example for Jews and all other people that God has intended.
This book will be most accessible to those who live in Israel, know Israel or know Jewish religious practices. Almost every page includes Hebrew terms, and non-Jews like me will be kept busy flipping to the glossary in the back to find out what the words mean. In too many cases, there's no translation so you just have to guess.
But it would be a mistake for those who are not Jewish to skip this book. Mr. Freedman is a highly religious and moral man whose example can teach all of us many valuable lessons about following God's will towards our fellow humans and animals.
He is very honest in describing his many failures to do the optimal thing, and is harsh with himself for these failings. He also is a subtle observer who draws valuable lessons from his experiences. He soon notices that helping others involves doing so on their terms . . . not on ours. That may even mean letting them help us, even when we don't want or need any help. There are also many situations where what the right thing is can be very difficult to discern.
Mr. Freedman has more financial resources than many of the people he meets and knows. As a result, he is often asked to loan or give money which he does freely. Yet in the end, he realizes that happily giving his attention, his time and his expertise are usually better gifts than his money.
Ultimately, the value of this book is in holding up a mirror of how one can try to be a moral person who that we can see how we compare. Mr. Freedman has no thoughts or experiences that you haven't had in some other context.
I was struck by how often Mr. Freedman did his moral acts out of a sense of what is right and a sense of caring to be a good person. In doing so, he is like a moral philosopher looking for the truth. Yet, he is a loner and doesn't find human contact easy. Much of his kindness brings him personal pain that often exceeds the benefit that others seem to have received. He is the more to be praised for his efforts.
In my own religious tradition, the Protestant Christian one, we are encouraged to be vessels for God's love which simply spills naturally out of us to encompass helping others. In doing so, God directs us to do the right thing without any particular reflection on our part. The Holy Spirit is always there guiding us. I came away realizing what a great gift the Holy Spirit is in helping us to do the right thing from God's perspective and how the Holy Spirit saves us so many agonies of trying to decide what to do. I wouldn't enjoy trying to be judge and jury over everything and everyone in the way that Mr. Freedman tries to do.
May your life be filled with much joy in providing goodness
Great reading...sure to better yourself.......2004-05-02
I just finished reading Shalom Freedman's Small Acts of Kindness. It is MUST reading for any person wanting to better themselves, regardless of their religion. Freedman shows us by personal example how to be a better human being and how to improve everything around us.
His positive attitude towards all of humanity is a great inspiration and his willingness to help those less fortunate than himself truly indicates that he is a man to be admired.
Anyone looking for ways to better themselves and help others at the same time must read this book.
small acts of kindness review.......2004-03-08
I have never really read a book of this kind before. This
journal measures one man's sincere attempt to perform compassionate (sometimes random) acts towards his fellow man. The author reflectively pursues his attempts at derech eretz in a world that sometimes is unappreciative, sometimes unaware and sometimes mean spirited. Nevertheless, Mr. Freedman chases his goal of being a good person relentlessly and honestly.
His attempts are to be admired. Whether he is successful at
all times is not the point. His writing is clear and his
motives are well meaning. I highly recommend this book to others.

"Cancer wreaks havoc in almost every part of the human body"--Robert Weinberg's opening remark is a chilling reminder of the pervasiveness of an all-too-familiar disease. Cancer touches most families, and if you have ever wondered why, despite so much time, effort, and money, it has proved such a seemingly intractable problem, then read One Renegade Cell, Robert Weinberg's masterful explanation. As director of the Oncology Research Laboratory at the Whitehead Institute and professor of Biology at MIT, Weinberg has been at the forefront of cancer research for well over a decade.
Unlike most diseases, cancerous tumors are not foreign invaders but "take on the appearance of alien life forms, invaders that enter the body through stealth and begin their programs of destruction from within." But as Weinberg shows, these are deceptive appearances. And since he is foremost a scientist, he finds the truth "subtle and endlessly interesting" and manages to convey fascination for something that most of us dread--cancer. Much of the present increase in cancer is due to increased longevity because "given enough time, cancer will strike every human body."
By telling the story of the historical discovery of cancer, Weinberg is able to introduce gradually the intricacies and complications of the genes and proteins involved (oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes, etc.) for the general reader. He characterizes cancer cells as renegade because, unlike normal body cells, they "disregard the needs of the community of cells," they are "selfish and unsociable," and are only interested in "their own proliferative advantage." By comparison, normal cells hold down cell numbers by "inducing them to commit suicide" (apoptosis).
The understanding of cancer has been developed enormously over the last few decades by Weinberg and the worldwide community of researchers. As Weinberg eloquently shows, cancer research and its related disciplines "have moved from substantial ignorance to deep insight." --Douglas Palmer, Amazon.co.uk
Book Description
For everyone whose life has been touched by cancer, One Renegade Cell tells the story of the search for the ultimate causes of this dreaded disease.
"One Renegade Cell…offers a breathtaking picture, both wonderful and frightening, of the fantastic intricacy of aberrant cellular functioning." -New York Times
"Part primer, part history and part meditation. [One Renegade Cell] succeeds on all counts." -Wall Street Journal
One of the leading cancer researchers in the world, Robert A. Weinberg is perfectly suited to describe the search for cancer's origins from the early days of this century to the present. Presuming little knowledge of biology, he tells how a cancer-causing virus was first discovered in 1909, how the correlation was made between chemical carcinogens and cancer, and how oncogenes (the genes that can turn a cell malignant) work. He explains clearly how malignant cells send messages to one another and also block the messages of normal cells. Finally, Weinberg predicts that cancer prevention may depend on our ability to understand the mysterious chemical clock that regulates our cells' most basic functions. One Renegade Cell offers a concise, accessible route into the complex and often daunting world of cancer and cancer research.

Must read.......2007-05-24
This is an amzaing manuscript. By leading the reader through the key discoveries in modern molecular oncology , Weinberg is able to elucidate the hallmarks of carginogenesis in simple, yet comprehensive ways.
This is a must read for any doctoral student. However, Weinberg simple and entertaining language will be enjoyed by anybody who has an interest in the pathways that lead to cancer.
History of cancer theories for the layperson.......2007-04-17
Here's a book that I would recommend to those people interested in learning a bit about the beginnings of cancer. In One Renegade Cell, Robert Weinberg has written an informative narrative on the history of cancer and molecular biology research, focusing on the theories and evidence behind the early days of this field: the 1970's and 80's.
Weinberg's focus is on what he knows best: the mechanisms that promote and regulate the proliferation of normal and malignant cells. And for that, his explanations are the best out there. These explanations take up the first half of the book, corresponds to the early events in the development of a tumor, and makes up a coherent story. For example, he covers oncogenes, tumor suppressors, apoptosis, and to a lesser extent DNA repair, in relatively easy-to-follow language.
In the second half of the book, Weinberg refers to other aspects of cancer progression, more reflective of the later stages of cancer - angiogenesis, immune evasion and metastasis. He essentially provides the highlight reel for these aspects of cancer, and I felt that the transitions to such topics could have used some work. But that's okay in my opinion, because Weinberg comes right out and says it on the cover - this book is specifically about *the beginning* of cancer, first and foremost.
Weinberg also avoids using overwhelmingly long lists of references that are typical of more scientific writing, as well as skipping over the many highly-technical details that are involved in actually conducting such research, making it more accessible to non-experts. Indeed, he defines every term in a way that probably only requires a minimal background in biology to understand.
Excelent entry to cancer biology.......2004-04-11
There are very few books out that give the reader an overview modern cancer biology. This short book gives a clear picture of a complex and current subject. It uses historical perspective on scientific discovery to enliven the reading. It's well organized and readable without background in biology, but with enough depth to interest biologists in other fields. I also reccomend Robert Weinberg's "Genes and the Biology of Cancer", written with Harold Varmus, which covers the same material in a little more depth.
Valuable information!.......2004-02-12
Extremely informative, written in interesting form like a scientific novel, a systematic mini-survey of the molecular biology of cancer. Takes you through 30 years of discovery, explaining how false expectations were replaced by the discovery in laboratories of right pathways. Among the useful pieces of information you'll pick up: cancer cells are not destroyed by chemo and radiation, only some DNA damage occurs. Unless the p53 gene is little enough damaged, then the tumor is not stopped, and Weinberg explains why. He fully describes the 6 mutations that are required, over time, to produce a metastasizing tumor. My wish: that Weinberg would next write a book about cancer treatments.
I end with an aside for those who are in love with the red herring called "holism", and imagine that "reductionism" is dead and of little or no use in the elucidation of complexity. The entire field of genetic and cancer discoveries, all of microbiology, is nothing but plain ol' reductionism applied to very long molecules, molecules so long and often disordered in shape that new techniques of chemical analysis had to be invented (like PCR). This book and any standard text on molecular biology provides full evidence for the truth of my assertion.
Must have: great intro and overview of current research.......2002-10-17
No prior knowledge of cell biology or genetics is required. I have gained an appreciation for the complexity of cancer research thanks to the book. I highly recommend it. You also learn a fair amount of the history of the development of cancer research. And don't think you need to read through hundreds of introductory pages to accomplish this. The book is under 200 pages.
Once again: What I found great about the book is it explains very clearly the current thories on how cancer starts and spreads without requiring any prior knowledge in the field.
For the scientifically oriented who are interested in the details, it has a big reference and endnote section. 5 stars for sure.

Drawing from information that was simply not available until recently, THE RENEGADE CELL explains this insidious disease as no other book has ever been able to do.
Book Description
"Joan Nathan has created a masterful blend of food and culture. She takes her reader on an extraordinary journey through the history of the land of Israel and the development of modern Israeli food. I was delighted to visit all the different ethnic communities that have contributed to Israeli cuisine, and my mouth watered just imagining the feast that Joan Nathan describes."
--Teddy Kollek, former mayor of Jerusalem
In this richly evocative book, Joan Nathan captures the spirit of Israel today by exploring its multifaceted cuisine. She delves into the histories of the people already settled in this nearly barren land, as well as those who immigrated and helped to quickly transform it into a country bursting with new produce. It is a dramatic and moving saga, interlarded with more than two hundred wonderful recipes that represent all the varied ethnic backgrounds. Every recipe has a story, and through these tales the story of Israel emerges.
Nathan shows how a typical Israeli menu today might include Middle Eastern hummus, a European schnitzel (made with native-raised turkey) accompanied by a Turkish eggplant salad and a Persian rice dish, with, perhaps, Jaffa Orange Delight for dessert. On Friday nights she visits with home cooks who may be preparing a traditional Libyan, Moroccan, Italian, or German meal for their families, the Sabbath being the focal point of the week throughout Israel (all her recipes are accordingly kosher). And she takes us to markets overflowing with vegetables, fruits, herbs, and spices.
To gather the recipes and the stories, Nathan has been traveling the length and breadth of Israel for many years--to a Syrian Alawite village on the northern border for a vegetarian kubbeh and to Bet She'an for potato burekas; to the Red Sea for farmed sea bream and to the Sea of Galilee for St. Peter's fish; to Jerusalem's Bukharan Quarter for Iraqi pita bread baked in a wood-fired clay oven, to the Nahlaot neighborhood for Yemenite fried pancake-like bread, and to a Druse village for paper-thin lavash; to a tiny restaurant in Haifa for Turkish coconut cake and to a wedding at Kibbutz May'ayan Baruch in the upper Galilee for Moroccan sweet couscous; and to many, many other places. All the while, she seeks out biblical connections between ancient herbs and vegetables and their modern counterparts, between Esau's mess of pottage and today's popular taboulleh, and she delights us with tales of all she encounters.
Throughout, Joan Nathan shows us how food in this politically turbulent land can be a way of breaking down barriers between Jews, Moslems, and Christians. Generously illustrated with colorful photographs, this enormously engaging book is one to treasure, not only as a splendid cookbook but also as a unique record of life in Israel.

History and cooking.......2007-07-19
I love Joan Nathan to begin with. Her recipes are always easy to follow and don't call for a million items that you have to search for in speciality stores. This book is like reading a novel. I have several of her books and love when she explains where and how the foods came into being. I would highly recommend it.
A Treat for Gourmet Cooks .......2007-05-09
When I came back from my first trip to Israel, I knew I had to have a cookbook that reflected all the smells and the tastes of Israel. I have always loved Joan Nathan's cookbooks. Her books are chockfull of great information and personal comments, not to mention incredibly delicious recipes! In The Foods of Israel there is a great assortment of recipes reflecting the different cultures that have influenced Israeli cuisine. There are recipes for such standard fare as hummus and fellafel and recipes that are pleasing to the palate using such herbs and spices as cumin, papkria, and cinnamin. Some of the recipes call for sumac, but since I have no idea what that is, I just left it out. Some of the ingredient lists are long, but most of the ingredients are easily obtainable, if one does not have them on hand. Some of the recipes are somewhat involved, but are well worth the effort. As with all recipes, it is important to read all the way through since some require marinating overnight. The writing of the recipes is simple and easy to follow. The table of contents and the index is helpful to the reader. I also loved the illustrations. By now you will have realized that I highly recommend this book!
The smells and tastes of the Middle East.......2007-01-21
This is an incredible anthology of recipes for those who long for a gastronomical return to Israel. While seemingly overwhelming, the recipes are succinct and incredibly accurate as to preparation and cooking. We are completely dependent on it.
WOW! A Top-10 Cookbook! An Epiphany!.......2003-08-19
I would emphatically disagree with the person who characterized this as a coffee table book! It only leaves my kitchen so I can read it on the train or before I go to sleep! It has completely changed the way my family eats! I have often bemoned not being able to have fresh bread with dinner because my wife and I both work. Now we have homemade pita most days with dinner, and couscous has completely replaced pasta as our staple starch. My wife and 6-year-old love everything I've made from it -- from the Moroccan meatballs with tomato-olive sauce to kubbanah (a sabbath bread baked overnight) to fishballs in a spicy tomato sauce to chocolate challah! I now even make my own harissa (Tunisian hot hot hot sauce)! Joan Nathan, already one of my favorite cookbook authors, has really created a masterpiece. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with it -- it is such a joy and opens the door to the cuisine of Israel to the American home cook. My only suggestion for improvement -- and it is small -- would have been to include a resourse for purchasing some of the exotic or esoteric cookware mentioned in the book. I would love to own a kubbanah pan and a large couscousierre, but don't know where to get either in the states. I love this book and will probably buy a second copy to tuck away for when I wear this copy out! I wouldn't want to live without it! Bravo, Ms. Nathan!
Every dish has a story to tell.......2002-11-22
If you believe that every dish has a story to tell, in other words, if you are the kind of person who likes to read cookbooks as much as you like to cook by them, then "The Foods of Israel Today" by Joan Nathan is a book for you. While the title indicates these are foods found in contemporary Israel, each dish is traditional, originating perhaps in Israel, or more often somewhere else: Germany, Iran, Italy, Libya, Morocco, Turkey, etc., but all a part of the Jewish diaspora and eventual return to multicultural Israel. The author really tells the story of each dish (there is just as much "story" as actual recipe): the people that make it, where they come from, how they live, and how the author came to learn it all. There are lots of historic photographs too. One slight drawback is that this book is most useful to someone who is an experienced cook, especially one who is familiar with Jewish cuisine. In a few places where a food or cooking technique may not be familar, it is not as much a step-by-step guide as it could be. However, this is a minor fault in a very valuable and enjoyable book.

How to Get Your Dog to Do What You Want: A Loving Approach to Unleashing Your Dog's Astonishing Potential
ASIN: 0449911233
Release Date: 1998-09-01 |
Book Description
"My ability to 'talk' with animals is a lot different from most people, and whether it was learned or taught I don't know. It doesn't matter what kind of animal it is--a snake, a dog, a bird . . . we talk to each other."
--Warren Eckstein
Warren Eckstein is an American original, the most renowned animal therapist in America. Long before the term was invented, Eckstein was an animal communicator. In a career that spans more than a quarter century, he has trained guard dogs for the Mob, helped the pets of such celebrities as Al Pacino, Lily Tomlin, Rodney Dangerfield, and Kathie Lee Gifford, and--perhaps most important of all--he has saved countless animals' lives. Now Eckstein shares his unique, wildly offbeat story with us in an irresistible and candid memoir of a life devoted to animals.
Beyond his work with dogs and cats, Eckstein has befriended (and occasionally antagonized) a variety of "clients"--from goats, bears, and alligators to peacocks, tigers, and king cobras. He shares unforgettable encounters in which he was bitten by a python, de-fingered by a mongoose, and found himself locked in a lion's cage. Here, too, are hilarious anecdotes about sleeping with a pig and making a Fifth Avenue matron's dream of dancing with her dog come true.
In these outrageous and touching true stories that comprise an amazing life, Warren Eckstein holds us spellbound. In the end, we love not only his animals, but the man as well--the magician as well as his magic.

Colorful autobiography of a very successful pet behaviorist.......1998-11-26
Warren Eckstein and Denise Madden, both self-proclaimed animal lovers have outdone themselves in composing their new book.
It is a personal, funny, sad, and loving look at Warren's colorful life. He is unlike other celebrity dog trainers. He is progressive in the way that he approaches animals and way ahead of his time in his attitudes toward animals.
This book captivates his love of animals, his experiences both as a child growing up in New York's Long Island and as an adult training celebrities' animals.
Warren's autobiography is entertaining and delightful. His love of animals and animal welfare comes accross very clearly. He is definitely not like his colleagues who talk the talk, but don't walk the walk.
I hope that you will enjoy the book as much as I did and think of giving it as a gift for that animal lover in your family.
"Wonderful, funny, heartwarming trip down memory lane.".......1998-10-07
It has been a lot of fun going down memory lane with Warren and to hear all his tales about the famous and infamous people and their pets that he met in his travels. How nice and thoughtful of Warren to share these very personal and poignant moments with his readers and fans. Whenever I read a book written by Warren I feel as though I am having a personal chat with him over a cup of coffee or a bottle of Schlitz ! While reading this wonderful book I have caught myself laughing out loud and I have also been saddened and brought to tears. This has been a true education for me as with all his books and I really appreciate all the hard work and love Warren and Fay, and now Warren and Denise have gone through to help God's creatures. In reading the book I feel this is a tribute to Fay and a healing for Warren. A wonderful tribute to Fay and all her hard work on behalf of the animals and her love for Warren. Yes, the circle certainly from his wonderful parents who gave us this wonderful and caring man work to Fay and now to Denise.

Great ideas for everyone........2007-04-16
I think this book has great ideas and styles for everyone. Some of the ideas are very simple that anyone could do (I am not an artsy/creative person at all), while other ideas are for the more crafty person.
This book was so helpful to me, I saved a lot of money and my invitations are much more personable and more my style than anything I could have bought at a store.
Must be crafty.......2007-04-12
I have found that I am obviously not very crafty. The book tries to lay out the details on how to make the invitations for those of us that are crafty challenged. I decided that there was to much work involved with making your own invitations. There are very nice designs in the book for those people that are willing to put the time and effort into making the invitations.
Wedding Invitations.......2007-03-08
I was looking for more formal invitation options. The term "artful" is correct in the title, for they were crafty. I did not find them to be "stylish" according to my taste.
Helpful.......2007-02-21
This is a nice book. However, it would have been even better if there were more invitation styles included in the book.
Fun and creative ideas.......2006-11-10
This book has a lot of creative ideas for sending out your standard wedding invitation. None of them are extremely hard (though I would skip the one that has your photo plastered onto some sort of zippered card).

Beautiful Cards that Can Actually be done!.......2005-08-20
I bought this book because I wanted to make beautiful, boutique-like cards, but couldn't ever quite get the look right. The Artful Card has a combination shabby-chic/whimsical feeling, and the instructions are excellent. There are pictures/instructions for every step of the project.
Well worth the money! I look forward to more books from this author!!!
Book Description
These elegant cards--conceived by the biggest names in crafting, such as Lynn Whipple, Claudine Hellmuth, Terry Taylor, and Akiko Sugiyama--use many of the popular "altered book" techniques, and the results are exquisite. In the same amount of time as it would take you to scan the racks for something mass-produced and impersonal, you can create these superbly designed, individualized 3-D and pop-up cards; photocopied, collaged, stenciled, and stamped ones; papers that have been stitched, embossed, woven, and cut; and projects incorporating fabulous folds and fasteners. There are even ideas about coordinating accompanying envelopes. And all the cards include many imaginative variations that will prompt crafters to explore the techniques in greater depth.

Customer Reviews:
The Book is Important.......2006-07-07
I could say the book is terrific and it is. But better than terrific, the book is important. It is important in that everyone should read it. Physical Scientists...some of the best, say what we see, hear and touch are not really what we think they are. Ms. Lewis uses hundreds of quotes from nearly everyone most people respect throughout her book as her premise. Then she connects the dots between the quotes effectively, and for me, convincingly.
Here is one such quote in the book. Admittedly most are much shorter:
"Gradually philosophers and scientists arrived at the startling conclusion that since every object is simply the sum of its qualities, and since qualities exist only in the mind, the whole objective universe of matter and energy, atoms and stars does not exist except as a contruction of the consciousness, and edifice of conventional symbols shaped by the senses of man."
Lincoln Barnett, The Universe and Dr. Einstein
The message of the book presented with conviction is that thoughts are things and we need to watch what we think for the good of ourselves and mankind.
Ms. Lewis gets down to what is probably real, what is core, and that therefore makes an important book...better than merely a terrific book.
Can we extablish a category of 6 stars?
are you at a fork in your road?.......2002-12-13
If you have ever asked: Why is life so unfair, so hard for me? Why do other people have all the luck? Why doesn't anybody love me? Why don't I know what to do? Then give yourself the gift of LIVING IN GRACE. It will change your mind, shift your perception & give you ideas that will change the rest of your life. No, it won't happen over night, like being touched by the Good Fairy's wand, because you do have to do the "work."
While a focus on Christianity does appear halfway through the book, it is not the Christianity of our childhood, & Beca Lewis' exercises & ideas actually transcend that exclusivity.
Beca Lewis has something to tell us, & it is memorable, sometimes scary, often useful - a look into how to transform the quality of our lives, to live the life we've always wanted to, in contentment, authenticity, & being present.

Emphasizing the importance of putting God first and repenting of sins, as well as being aware of the necessity for balance in all relationships, Living In Grace is a profound, moving, constructive, "reader friendly" instructional guide to personal and spiritual self-improvement.

A refreshing and positive look at life and spirituality.......2002-07-10
I have always had an interest and curiousity about the spiritual side of life and finding the answer(s) to why we are all here. I have read many books in the "new-age" genre. Beca's book is a wonderful and uplifting guide on the subject of life and the truth of who we really are. For once, someone approaches life in a completely positive, loving and reassuring way. We are not told that the world is an awful and evil place, but quite the opposite, if we just shift the way we look at things. Everything we have ever needed is and always has been available to and provided for us. We have just been looking at things the wrong way. Beca clearly explains how to get back on track and gives the reader practical ways to return to our true Spiritual Path and how to easily stay there. I would recommend this book to anyone who is not afraid to change their life in a positive way once and for all.
Book Description
In The Composer-Pianists: Hamelin and The Eight, Robert Rimm writes about eight legendary, enigmatic, and interrelated composer-pianists of the instrument's golden age and goes on to consider their present-day advocate and astounding interpreter Marc-Andre Hamelin, whose dynamic playing and engaging personality immediately impressed Rimm upon their first encounter. Rimm portrays The Eight (Alkan, Busoni, Feinberg, Godowsky, Medtner, Rachmaninov, Scriabin, and Sorabji) as the piano's aural sensualists and explores the relationships among their music, their music-making, their ideas, and their lives. HARDCOVER.
Customer Reviews:
A very fine book..........2007-05-17
These kinds of books are often dry, but here we have an accessible, beautifully written volume about some of music's most original thinkers. Each insightful chapter is supported by letters and quotes from the composer-pianists themselves. I particularly appreciated the many Russian sources Rimm has uncovered, through archival materials and interviews. Hamelin provides terrific commentary, and the book also includes in-depth interviews with Stephen Hough, Radu Lupu, Zoltan Kocsis and Krystian Zimerman.
a plug.......2007-04-19
--you DO need to know a lot about the composers rimm writes about to enjoy this book--but ENJOY is the word--the book is written more as on-purpose belles lettres than encyclopedia entry, much less introduction musicology, and I find rimm's writing a lot of the time poetic and funny--but that's not the problem
--this book has stirred up a lot of hostility towards rimm's collaborator marc hamelin, one of the great pianists, because the problem is that marc is presented as expert in BOTH parts of the artist-type composer pianist--marc's contribution to the book on the subject of the life of a working virtuoso pianist is EXPERT (i mean what else would it be)--his contribution on the subject of the working life of a composer is...LOL why get nasty
--instead a plug--STEPHEN HOUGH is no slouch as a working virtuoso pianist--HIS contribution to Rimm's book gets squeezed out in a page-and-half forward BUT i'm plugging that this guy has been composing some pretty AMAZING transcriptions for his instrument--check out his dropdead march of siamese children (KING AND I) on his piano album 2--go on from there
A wonderful exploration of the composer-pianist tradition.......2007-04-03
This exceptional book provides a crucial reference, not only to individual biographies of eight composer-pianists the likes of Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, Medtner, Busoni, Godowsky and others, but in how Rimm groups them in pairs. One reads comparisons and contrasts between and among them in a way that provides historical context to the vital composer-pianist tradition. As a pianist who has played many works by these composers, I found stylistic and emotional insights page after page. The chapter on musical criticism is another highlight, with its wry look at the sometimes ephemeral perspectives of music critics, with some very funny and also unfortunate examples. The inclusion of Marc-André Hamelin was a brilliant stroke. Rimm doesn't begin to suggest that he is in the same compositional league as the others, but Hamelin, one of the world's foremost pianists, provides invaluable au courant perspective and context. The companion CD from Hyperion is also a gem.
A fascinating book.......2007-01-04
At first, I wondered why Chopin and Liszt weren't included in a book called "The Composer-Pianists," but these eight form a closely interrelated league all their own. By extensively quoting their letters, diaries and writings as they relate both to themselves and to each other (including intriguing material from Russia apparently never before translated), Rimm illuminates their thoughts, motivations, desires and methods. Although Hamelin is not widely known as a composer, he is recognized around the world as among their foremost interpreters. Who else has in his/her repertoire all the Medtner and Scriabin sonatas, the Chopin-Godowsky etudes, the Godowsky Passacaglia, the Alkan Concerto and solo-piano Symphony, the Busoni Concerto, et al., and at such an Olympian level of technical achievement and musical eloquence? I've heard several of Hamelin's compositions both in recital and on recordings, and he demonstrates polyphonic and pianistic sorcery (with transcriptions as well) that clearly echo The Eight. As Rimm posits, though, it remains to be seen whether Hamelin will occupy a lasting place compositionally. He also offers a perspective toward the future with names like Kocsis, Pletnev, Hough and others. (Incidentally, Stephen Hough has written a fine foreword to this book.)
Rimm's chapter on transcriptions, a large part of The Eight's performances and compositions, should be required reading for anyone interested in the transcriber's art, and the chapter on musical criticism is both sharply observed and funny. Whether one hears music in terms of eroticism is fairly subjective (and I don't), Rimm cites numerous examples from most of these composers, especially Scriabin, that indicate direct expression of eroticism and sensuality through their music.
Well written and comprehensively researched, including photographs and letters not otherwise accessible, this book may well contribute to the renaissance of Medtner, Alkan, Busoni and Godowsky. Hamelin surely has!
a couple of facts.......2006-11-23
Fact #1: Rimm is a mediocre writer at his best, and consistently quite poor as an expositor: if you come to this book already knowing the biographies and compositions of "the eight" you will be able to read him with an awareness of what he's trying to say; if you don't already know basic biographical facts about Rimm's "eight" you will often be at sea in his narrative.
Fact # 2: Hamelin is a pianist of unique technical gifts who wastes those gifts by using too much sustain pedal to achieve multi-voice effects, but leave Hamelin the pianist out of it for the moment: Hamelin is an amateur composer, he is in middle age now and so far he has composed several little pieces for the piano: some etudes, a prelude & fugue, a transcription of Rossini, unpublished so far, but all "composed", according to Rimm, with great and long effort... Well, to place Hamelin and his little, laborious output, as Rimm does, in the class of Alkan, Busoni and the others is a mind-boggling, grotesque absurdity. That Hamelin seems not to have objected to such comparison reflects badly on him. A reviewer, who refers to Hamelin as "Marc", writes that Rimm is a friend of Hamelin. Maybe that explains things.
Book Description
Isn't sexual -- or emotional -- intimacy enough? "No," says Christian psychologist Dr. David Clarke. "Spiritual bonding is the process by which a couple cultivates the presence of God in their relationship," he says, "and it's the only 'glue' that sustains relationships long-term." Working with hundreds of couples, Clarke observes that when we take specific steps to keep God at the center of our relationships, every area of intimacy is energized. This book teaches men and women in a committed relationship how to pray together, create "spiritual conversations," read and study Scripture together, hold private worship sessions, and allow the Holy Spirit to guide them. It's extremely practical counsel all couples need today.

The Best of Its Kind.......2007-01-24
I have read many books on building a strong marriage or repairing a damaged one. Many of them are very good, others, not so much. Without question, this book, A MARRIAGE AFTER GOD'S OWN HEART by David Clarke, presents the married couple with the absolute best advice to building a marriage that reaches levels rarely found in marriages. I would even go so far as to say, if a couple follows what Clarke outlines here, adheres to it with vigilance, you absolutely cannot fail in your marriage. I know that is a very strong statement to make, but I truly believe it.
As the title clearly states, this book is about using your marital relationship to strengthen your relationship with God, and in doing so, having the kind of blissful relationship in marriage that God intended you to have. If you do not feel the need to have God in your life, or to ask for God's guidance in your marriage, then by all means, do not buy this book, but if you know your relationship will be enhanced a thousand-fold with God's guidance and inclusion in your lives, this book gives clear, concise direction in how to make it happen for you.
Clarke covers every aspect and angle of building a spiritual bond with your mate. No only does he educate readers on the importance of spiritual bonding, but gives step by step detailed instructions on things such as how to broach the subject with a reluctant mate and becoming prayer partners.
There are those who will shallowly conclude that only God-focused Christians will have a successful marriage. That may be true if you consider fifty years of living together in misery a success. What David Clarke is focusing on here transcends the short-sighted success of longevity and strives instead for a lifetime of blissful happiness between a man and woman. Is that to say there will be strife or turmoil? Certainly not. But with God guiding your way, strife and turmoil become hurdles rather than roadblocks.
Pastor Monty Rainey
A Marriage After God's Own Heart.......2006-07-31
This is an excellent book to give as a wedding gift.
Encourage the newly married who invited God to their wedding to also invite Him into their marriage!

This book is great!.......2005-08-18
This book is a wonderful guide to getting a Christian marriage on track, and getting to a passionate, fulfilling relationship. The author writes with humor and uses funny examples from his own marriage to show how he went from an average relationship to an incredible one. I highly recommend this book.
SOME practical advice.......2004-02-23
The basic premise of this book is that the spiritual bond between a man and wife is very important, and Clarke ends up giving some very practical tips that will help you build this bond. He also intersperses some helpful examples from his experience as a marriage counselor.
I am rating the book a three, but it could very well be a four for me. I down-graded the book because it took a long time to get to the meat. Examples are great for supporting a case, but sometimes they dilute the content when there are too many, and I felt like there was some dilution in this case. If I had rated the book after three chapters, it would have been a two, but I really thought that the advice and insight in the later parts of the book were helpful.
One of the helpful things that Clarke talks about are how to build a good prayer life together, and he addresses four different stages of spiritual vitality that a couple may be at. He does not presume that you are either an on-fire Christian or an outright spiritual rebel, and he strives to give advice for wherever you might be.
Clarke also spends chapters on sex and communication that I found helpful because he spoke from both the perspective of the wife and the husband, and addressed key issues for each. The advice most helpful to me, as a guy, was to be pro-active in developing communication with my wife. This is something that does not always come naturally to me, so I appreciated his insight.
The chapters are very short, which I think is a good thing because you can soak in smaller chunks of information at a time. I would recommend this book to Christian couples, with my advice being to skim the first few chapters and to take good notes throughout the rest of the book.
Fantastic way to complete the cord of three.......2002-07-22
As christians we know that a marraige built around God is the key to building lasting true happiness with our spouse. This book is practical, and explanatory on how to achieve this ever so important goal. Highly recommended for all who desire to reach new peaks in marrital and personal intimacy with christ.
Book Description
David, unlike any Bible character before him, had the charisma to inspire a great nation. Yet in other ways he was a most ordinary man-often gripped by destructive passion, rocked by personal tragedy, and motivated by political gain. Yet, he is the one character the Bible describes as a "man after God's own heart." In this first volume of the "Great Lives" series Charles Swindoll shows how David proved his love for God many times over in an extraordinary life that left an enduring legacy of faith.
Customer Reviews:
WE ALL HAVE OUR LITTLE SAULS' OR SALIERI'S IN LIFE.......2007-02-23
What I do like about Chuck Swindoll's is that he brings that Old Testament to life for Born Again Christians and makes it relevant to adult lives and problems. This book on David as well as his study guide did give me much food for life when I was having non-legal problems with the government after I had applied for the Federal Civil Service in 1985. I heard on TV that Reagan had to approve in signature even applications for GS-9 position and I was on the list for considerations for such jobs when I was in grad school. I think they just wanted to teach young men like ma a lesson in life the hard way!
David had become a national hero by killing the Philistine Giant Goliath. Then the prophet Samuel had annointed David to be Israel's future king since Saul had committed an act of disobedience against him. Saul became paranoid how David become a military hero where "Saul has slain his thousands; David his ten thousands"! So, Saul in his madness set out to kill David.
What I found so some food for thought was that when David was losing heart about Saul persuing him to kill him and he had to live underground and off the land, that David decided to defect to the pagan Phillistine army-kind of like seeking Political Assylum with the Soviets or the North Koreans! When I was being persecuted on Park Street in North Toledo, I did seek assylum with several foreing nations. But nothing happened. I told myself who is "America's Philistines"-Russia, China, North Korea and Iran. I even sent them all resumes through my shortwave radio hobby. I had a big foreign address book called THE WORLD RADIO TV HANDBOOK! Plenty of people to complain to there!
Other things I liked about David was that he had a thing for the ladies; and I also like pretty girls, but never seem to make it with any of them. David had an entire Harem of seven wives. You cannot find the definition of the word "Harem" in my Bible Dictionary; so sexless and loveless is America's Christianity! He was such an opportunist that he picked up the wife Abagial from a dead enemy Nabal who denied him and his men food when they were on the run from Saul. God stuck Nabal dead with a heart attack for his stinginess. I used to say that my former father in law was liewise a hard man like Nabal-yet God did not strike him dead. And of course David was a Prophet and a Man of God. He wrote about 50 of the Old Testament Psalms, some of which prophesy of Christ;s crucifion on the cross and the coming Millennial Kingdom of God. God had taken David from tending the sheep to becoming Sheperd of Israel! David was a man after God's heart as David did what God had wanted him to do during his reign as King. I found that defining verse in Acts.
I liked the folk guitar in high school and in the Army. I read that David played the small harp, which was a forerunner of the modern folk guitar. Me and David liked music and pretty ladies. I was just thinking the other day that when I die and go to Heaven I will really like to meet this man, as though he was my friend!
Well worth the reading.......2007-01-11
Yet another great book in the series. Well worth the reading and study. I have ordered additional copies to give as gifts.
Great As A Teaching Manual!.......2006-07-27
This is a well written, thought provoking book. I am currently using it as a manual for a Bible study class. It's not one of those "deep theological" biographies, but it speaks to the layman, in a very easy-to-understand style. Recommended for study groups, or anyone, who wants to know more about the "man after God's own heart".
best of the Swindoll series?.......2006-02-24
All the books are good ... this one was great. It hit home for me.
For the most part Swindoll misses the point.......2006-02-19
We used this book for an adult Sunday School class that I taught. I was extremely disappointed by the superficial treatment of the text. I found myself using the Biblical text and other sources. For the most part Dr. Swindoll's book was a distraction rather than a help. For example, 2 Samuel 7 descibes
God's covenant with David that Christ, the True King, would be David's descendant. Swindoll uses this text as to how to react when God says no to our plans. (In this case, it is God's rejection of David as the builder the temple that Solomon eventually built) The covenant IS the point and Dr. Swindoll completely misses it.
If your looking for moralisms that you really already knew this is your book. If you want a serious study of the life of David
you would do well to look elsewhere or try something bold-- a careful reading of the Biblical text.

Book Description
David. Many people share the name, but when it is used singularly even those unfamiliar with the Old Testament know of whom it speaks. Shepherd boy, warrior, giant-slayer, king, adulterer. A man after God's own heart. That's the mystery of David's story. How could such an enigmatic man, who is almost bigger than life, be so close to the heart of his God? Randy Hyde explores the nuances of David's life and faith in this account of the Old Testament hero.
