Where was the war?.......2000-07-04
The description of this book leads one to believe that you will read about the dangerous action going on in WWII. Mr. James was simply a tourist taking pictures of historic India. If you want to read about the adventures of those who served in the China-Burma-India theater this is not your book.

While certainly a biography, Richard Pollak's book is much more than a simple account of the life of the renowned psychologist Bruno Bettelheim. Pollak's book is both more personal and more damning than would be possible for any other writer to draft. Pollak's younger brother Stephen was a patient of Bettelheim's and a student at the Orthogenic School in Chicago. At age nine, while playing hide-and-seek with his brother in an old dairy barn, Richard witnessed his six-year-old brother accidentally fall to his death. Pollak's parents attempted to deal with this tragedy by sweeping it under the rug, a solution that only delayed the author's desire to know more about his brother, his parents, and the full dimensions of this tragedy within his family life. A visit to Bettelheim to inquire into his brother's psychological records, led to a remarkable encounter in which Bettelheim inexplicably insisted that Stephen had committed suicide and laid the blame for his death with Pollak's mother, whom he described as a jealous and uncaring woman. This incredible experience led Pollak to begin to question what type of man Bettelheim truly was, and what basis he had for his diagnosis. What Pollak has uncovered is simply incredible. A twisted path of deception, self-invention, and plagiarism is disclosed in damning detail, stripping the famed author of The Uses of Enchantment of any justifiable claim to his esteemed reputation as a child psychologist, and throwing into doubt many of the basic details of the life the late Bettelheim had claimed to have lived. Pollak takes down Bettelheim, pins him to the mat, and pursues him to the end, in a fascinating work that stretches the boundaries of biography.

One Autism Spectrum Family Thanks Mr. Pollak.......2006-03-23
Mr. Pollak has done families on the autism spectrum and, especially, mothers an enormous service by writing this book. The Bettelheim theory on autism -- that refrigerator moms caused autism in their children by unconsciously rejecting them -- ruled the medical and psychological community for decades. Based on little more than his own unresearched ideas, Bettelheim not only generated this theory, he made it his business to preach it from the popular media pulpit. Due to this, for decades worried mothers who turned to the medical community for help with their children who were slipping away into autism were blamed as being the cause of the disorder, shunned by doctors and nurses, and advised to institutionalize their autistic children so that they could not contaminate them further.
With three children on the autism spectrum in my extended family, I know firsthand the difficulties, guilt, shame, and fear that parent's feel when figuring out how to help their kids with autism. I cannot and do not want to even imagine how destructive and cruel it must have been for mothers of autistic children to be told by the very people they went to for help -- in the medical and psychiatric community -- that they themselves were the cause of their kid's autism. Mr. Pollak has righted some very pervasive and poinsonous wrongs by exposing Bettelheim for the fraud that he was. It is also a cautionary tale that pat, unsubstantiated claims about any psychological theory should be viewed with caution.
Now, could we look at Mr. Freud and all his many theories based on the psyches of middle-class Viennese ladies?

Wake up and smell the child abuse.......2004-07-30
Pollak does a brilliant job of tearing away the deceptions and rationalizations that made Bettelheim's Orthogenic School seem like an outstanding, cutting edge School for emotionally troubled, mentally ill and autistic children.
The chapter on Bettelheim's brutality against the children really made me wonder how did the staff working with him rationalize his behavior for so many years? I guess some staff were intimidated by him. And some were awestruck by his prestige.
I think indirectly Pollak's book is an indictment against the University of Chicago for so carelessly supporting Bettelheim for so many years - 30 years. Pollak shows how Bettelheim was allowed to surround himself with whatever staff he pleased. And frequently, he chose impressionable, young people who had good reason to believe that Bettelheim's method's were rational since the U of C backed the school. I guess the U of C was so content with Bettelheim's national prestige and with the money he brought to the University that they weren't concerned about his cruel, sadistic side. And I'm sure that U of C officials must have known something about this side of Betttelheim, since he said outrageous things in public.
Also, I guess Pollak's book shows how easy it can be for the ordinary person to witness terrible acts of brutality against a vulnerable population (and troubled children, some as young as 4, living away from their parents for several years is probably one of the more vulnerable populations in the world) yet do and say nothing.
In the book, Bettelheim supporters seem to rationalize that because Bettelheim was so brilliant that he could somehow abuse children in an effective, therapeutic way. They decided that his role of the Big Bad Wolf would help sick children overcome the terror of their inner aggression. Now, unless you think mentally ill children are an alien species, what child is going to feel safer knowing that at any moment they might be beaten in the head, slapped repeatedly in the face or have their pants pulled down and be beaten on their behinds with a belt? What child is going to feel safer knowing that all this abuse would be dealt out entirely according to the discretion of one man. And that the staff would either ignore what he did or tell you to overlook the welts he created on your body and just listen to the wisdom of what he said to you. This type of thinking, which Pollak describes in his book, seems like a rationalization of the worst kind. It is extraordinarily simplistic to assume that Bettelheim can help children by beating and shaming them. And Pollak makes it clear that Bettelheim's cruelty towards the children was not an infrequent aberration, but an integral and consistant part of this therapeutic milieu. And, because he is dealing with children, often young children, they cannot stand up to his abuse. They need someone to depend on so much, that they can't resist his tyranny.
And the person Bettelheim picked to be his successor, Jacqui Sanders, never reported his abuse to any authority. And she continued his legacy of hitting children for many years after her directorship. She even wrote a book rationalizing her behavior that was published by the U of C press.
Many who worked at the Orthogenic School, including Jacqui, still rationalize their abusive behavior as superior to restraints or drugs. First of all, I think it's a horrid twist of logic to suggest that beating children is superior to these other methods. Also, at some point in her directorship Jacqui did stop hitting children...I think it's when she finally got licensed as a clinical psychologist. So I guess even she thought of other ways to contain a child who is acting chaotically, possibly when she actually studied the ideas of someone other than Bettelheim. Here's a suggestion for helping a child from me: try finding the child a compassionate therapist. Not a person who witnesses abuse of children and says nothing or a person who is trained to tell a child that getting beaten is okay. But a person who will listen to the child and who will try to help them understand their feelings and behavior.
The sad legacy of the Orthogenic School is that for many years it forced children to accept that getting beaten and shamed was an acceptable form of "care". I personally think that's sick. And I appreciate Pollak for exposing the sadistic underbelly of Bettelheim's School. Many of the students who went there are still alive. Some have families. And some appreciate having a bit of truth exposed to try and understand how the cruelty might have affected us.

I'm a 60-year-old autistic and have read lots of books and articles both by and about Bruno Bettelheim. This one takes the cake, though. It's so easy to skew facts in order to defame genius.
Consider this: Bettelheim openly admitted he smacked his patients, but only in response to violent behavior. No one gets mad at Benjamin Spock for suggesting that it's not such a bad thing to strike your child, just so long as you include a display of rage, rather than a cold-blooded reptilian front! When Annie Sullivan clobbered seven-year-old Helen Keller, everyone thought that was just precious. But when Bettelheim did it occassionally, he became grist for Pollak's cheap-shot rumor mill.
In fact, Helen Keller is a good case in point to back Bettelheim's theories of autism. When Keller was 19 months old, according to her parents, she was precocious and could talk perfectly well. After her traumatic illness, she not only lost her ability to talk--as typical of most autistics--she started exhibiting COMPLETE, FULL-BLOWN autistic behavior. She would perseverate over meaningless details and rock back and forth. In fact, modern reseach has shown that 31 per-cent of all blind children become autistic at age two.
Bettelheim believed that nobody is born autistic, but they may have inherited predispositions. Moreover, he believed that one can acquire a predisposition due to environment. If
Bettelheim was right, that autism has multiple causes, it would explain why autism is so elusive to modern researchers who are careful to rule out in advance any theoretical construct that might suggest environmental determinants, because such researchers are afraid of upsetting enraged mommies. When is the last time anyone has suggested that mothers like the one in "The Three Faces of Eve" might cause mental problems? This is deliberate ignorance, and Pollak has encouraged it. His book is a disaster to millions of autistic children who must now abandon all hope, or place it in the hands of neurologists. Unfortunately, no neurologist on Earth offers a cure for autism.

POLLAK'S RESENTMENT GETS THE BETTER OF HIM WHEN HE MAKES DUMB REMARKS LIKE: BETTELHEIM WAS A "A MOMMY HATER"
HIS BIO DOES GIVE SOME GOOD HISTORY ABOUT BETTELHEIM, THE TYPE OF HISTORY WE ALL LIKE TO SEE ABOUT GREAT MEN, ALL THEIR DIRTY LAUNDRY. IN BETTELHEIM'S CASE A LOT OF THIS AIRING OF LAUNDRY IS WARRENTED. BUT BETTELHEIM WAS A TRUE FREUDIAN. AND I FOR ONE HAVE FOUND HIS WRITINGS EXTREMELY ENLIGHTENING. THAT HIS PERSONAL LIFE WAS A [FAKE] DOES NOT TAKE AWAY FROM HIS POSITIVE BELIEFS ABOUT HUMAN NATURE. POLLAK THINKS OTHERWISE.

I've Tasted Better Chicken Soup.......2005-05-19
I've read other Chicken Soup for the Soul books before, but this one isn't as good in my opinion. I can see how other people might enjoy the book, but I didn't. Some of the stories seemed lengthy and without a point, but while reading other stories I wanted to beg for more details because the story was so short. The topics of the stories were good choices and would bring inspiration to some of the people who read them. Some stories didn't seem to fit their topic though and didn't have quite enough detail.
I especially liked the sections "A Matter of Perspective" and Overcoming Obstacles." The stories in these two sections made you look (if only for a few seconds) at life in a little different way. The stories showed how attitude and strong beliefs could help you through some of the most difficult times in your life.
One part of the books I really didn't like was the fact that several of the stories were about death. When suffering a loss stories like those can be inspirational but too many stories in that topic gets depressing in my opinion.
I think this book is a good Chicken Soup for the Soul book. I also think that the other Chicken Soup for the Soul books were better.

Sequels are supposed to be worse than the original copy, but this book must be the exception that makes the rule. Awesome book! Please-more stories with surprise endings. This book had some very predictable stories.

I think that this book was terrific, even though there were other Chicken Soup books that I thought were better. Almost all of the stories had a moral in them and the ones in the end especially made me cry. I think that the Chicken Soup books will be great just like they are now in the years to come.

Although I _LOVED_ the stories in the other books of this series (and highly recommend the other books), I was very disappointed with this one. Perilously few "reached" or "touched" me as they had in the earlier books.

Don't be fooled by the title or the charming cover illustration. This book is not about a tea party. It is a cookbook - for a teenager or adult. Several of the recipes have eight, nine, or ten ingredients and include roasting a whole chicken!

Great Reference Book - For Beginners & Up.......2006-04-13
I've been crocheting for over 2 years now, and I still pick up this book whenever I need extra guidance or a quick reminder on how to perform a specific stitch. I have acquired many crochet books in the past 2 years, but the Beginner's Guide to Crochet is the one book I consistently grab when I sit down to start a new project.

M's Turner always does a great job in her books, so it's no big surprise that she does with this book. If you want to learn how to crochet or if you want to teach crochet, this is an excellent book to start your journey. The instructions are clear and concise and help make the learning process much easier.
I recommend this book highly for beginners.

If you ask my wife, I border on obsessive compulsive regarding the Carpenters. Karen's voice is (sadly, WAS), in my mind, without peer... before her and since. Always on pitch; filled with wonderful color, texture and interpretation. She was wonderfully showcased by Richard's (undervalued) arrangements. That said: I LOVE the Carpenters. Always have.
That said, this book was a huge disappointment. The author --er, EDITOR, has simply amassed a mismash collection of short reviews (complete with heavyhanded industry jargon-babble), interviews and short articles. With very little structure and no value added insight, it's a dusty old scrapbook of meandering, repetitive and, therefore, quickly forgettable material.
I just think the Carpenters, especially Karen, deserve much better. She was that great.
That said, in my hunt for everything Carpenters, I do highly recommend the DVD: CLOSE TO YOU, REMEMBERING THE CARPENTERS. Of all the DVDs available (mostly lip-synching "videos") this has a lot of live material and insight that will satisfy the most obsessive Carpenters fan.
More than just a story..........2006-08-08
In this world of larger than life stories of celebrities and tell-all books delving into the personal lives of people, it is a nice change to have a book that simply talks about the performances and shares interviews by the people concerned. This book, put together well by Randy Schmidt, is a collection of articles and reviews spanning from the beginning of the Carpenters, through the untimely loss of Karen and beyond. Readers can go back in time and see what the critics were saying about the Carpenters in articles and reviews from various magazines and newspapers. The interviews make interesting reading to show us what Karen and Richard felt about their music, personal lives and the critics review of their music. Some of these articles can be found in various places on the net, but with this book, readers are able to find many articles that would be difficult to find if not entirely impossible. The book is an interesting read especially for Carpenters enthusiasts who enjoy getting everything they can about this tremendous group.
A LOT OF ARTICLES, A LOT OF REDUNDANCY.......2006-06-01
This book is not your everyday bio. It contains compiled articles about the incredible run of the Carpenters' career. The photos are lovely, and the idea of the book is a good one. However, I feel there are many articles in the book that repeat EVERYTHING over and over again. You learn that the Carpenters grew up in Downey a couple dozen times, and other general facts are mentioned again and again to the point that you feel like you just read this article. The content should have varied a bit more, to hold interest. If you are a Carpenters aficionado like I am, you will find this to be a good addition to your collection, just be prepared to get frustrated with how little new stuff you learn after reading a 256 page book.
Interesting History.......2002-12-31
Unlike "The Carpenters, The Untold Story" written by Ray Coleman, this book tells the story of the Carpenters chronologically using reprints of articles, critical analysis of their albums, and interviews that appeared in various magazines and fan club newsletters. While the first book is well written in novel form, this book keeps it real, complete with source documentations. There is no poetic license here, it's their complete history as it happened, a fantastic read.

"Yesterday Once More" by Randy Schmidt, an accomplished music teacher, has most of the more important published articles on the Carpenters. Their full text is printed in order, from 1970 to 1998. There are positive, as well as negative articles, on Karen and Richard Carpenter. The book does not have 1975 "Rolling Stone" piece; "The Family That Plays Together", (which can be purchased over the internet). The book also has Karen saying she was sorry for her comments on Mott the Hopple, but, the reader is not given any idea what the comments were. In the 1989, ratings topping, CBS made-for-television movie: "The Karen Carpenter Story", made by Richard Carpenter; the film shows Cynthia Gibb reading an review, which describes Karen as "chunky" and/or "chubby". According to Randy Schmidt-No Such Review Ever Existed! It was just "Hollywood" poetic licence! A friend of Karen's also told VH-1, Karen read a review that referred to her hourglass figure, and Karen flipped! Again, there is no evidence that anyone wrote a article that discussed Karen's weight, execpt to say how, after 1975, she was much too thin in appearance. The Carpenters were probably the best-selling U.S. music act of the 1970's, and their recordings will be played forever! Karen was a great, pioneer woman drummer/singer; and "Goodby to Love", (1972), by Richard Carpenter, (Tony Peluso on guitar), was the first "power ballad". This is an important, informative, intelligent book well worth reading and owning.

This memoir is a great and important work. Mishell was one of the few survivors of the Kovno ghetto, and if one wishes to learn about the destruction of Jews on Soviet territory, this is the book to read.
