Some New Ideas for "Tired" Vegetarians.......2007-05-18
I've been a vegetarian for a long time and am sort of tired of the "same old stuff." Even though my kids are grown and gone, I bought this book because it promised simple dishes kids would like. I readily admit I am an uninspired cook and the state of my pantry usually rivals Mother Hubbard's. But this book, as promised, did contain many new and easy ideas and combinations that are quick to prepare from common ingredients. Many of the recipes use meat substitutes, which in my mind is "cheating." The way I see it, vegetarianism is a meatless way of eating, not making traditionally meat-based dishes with substitutes. Except for that personal little quirk, I'd rate it 5 stars. I appreciate the variety this book will introduce to my diet. I also really appreciate the "do it because it's healthful" slant of the book, rather than the usual "do it because if you don't you're a bad person" focus of so many other vegetarian cookbooks.

Typical vegetarian fare. I was looking for easy, simple recipes for my 5-year-old, who refuses to eat meat, yet prefers chips and ice cream to healthy foods. The recipes in this book include bean sprouts and other not-so-kid-friendly ingredients. They just don't impress my son. I much prefer "Feeding the Healthy Vegetarian Family" by Ken Haedrich.

We are two working parents raising our children to eat like us, ovo-lacto vegetarian with some fish. My 2-year old is a more adventurous eater than some kids, but his favorites fall in the ever-popular bread, pasta, and cheese categories. We have tried many recipes in this cookbook, and he has liked just about all of them. Several are now part of our regular weekday repertoire. They are healthy and easy to make. I highly recommend this cookbook.

Getting Off to a Good Start and More.......2006-03-22
This is a publication of note. Highly informative for the beginner or seasoned collector there is a certain lure for these magnificent looking coins and abundant information on them. I will have to admit that I was certainly intrigued by this publication and spent several hours rummaging through the information contain herein. I have collected coins on and off for years and this was a good place to start and jump back in to that rewarding and enriching hobby.

Incomplete; a disappointment.......2005-09-25
On coffee table books such as this I usually borrow a copy from my local library before I lay down 30-plus dollars at my high street stockist (hobby shop, Yank). It's a good thing that I followed my usual pattern with "Remembering Revell..." since the book covers only US-based operations during the period 1952-1979. Revell's sizeable, more profitable and argueably more interesting UK, West German, Mexican (Lodela) and Japanese design and manufaturing operations are virtually ignored. The UK shop does get some ink but it is primarily spent criticizing the British tool and die makers. To be accurate the book should have been titled something like "US Revell Models 1952-1979".
The author has given the reader a well organized, smoothly written and beautifully illustrated book, albeit, one of limited scope. The text's limitation goes beyond the time and geography. The end of Revell as an independent, closely-held firm is dismissively summarized in less than half a page. All that the reader is told is that "costs rose" and "Profit margins had always been slim",...oh. What does that mean? If margins had always been minimal how had Revell survived, no, prospered as the world's largest model manufacturer? The author does tell the reader about changing liesure time options for US children and teenage boys, Revell's traditional market, that cut into US sales but nothing else. The effects of Revell's always more proftable foreign operations and the emergence of fine scale modeling as an adult hobby in the US go undicussed as do the oil shocks of 1973-74 and 1979 as they effected the cost of Revell's raw materials. Similiarly, the place of Revell in the stagnant N. American and W. European econonies of the late 1970's is ignored. This is not a tome aimed at MBA's but I'd like the full story about why my favorite boyhood model company folded. I suspect it is rapped up in the early death of the founder and the presence of a fuzzy undefined corporated hierarchy with ill-defined authority, responsiblity and accountablity.
Additionally, be advised that the introduction and much of the first chapter are lifted from this same author's earlier book about Aurora models.
Plastic Fantastic Age.......2004-04-15
This book takes a look at the history of Revell in its heyday of the 1950s to the 1970s. The book looks at the development of everything from the kit itself to the artists who drew the box tops which drove me nuts because I could never even come close to making the model like what was on the box top.
I was born in the 70s when Revell was starting to go through the turmoil that consolidated the plastic model industry so all this history is new to me. This book makes me want to go back in time and build most of these kits with only my trusty tube of glue as and a powerful exhaust fan as my companions.
Although I generally build the Tamigawa kits when I get the chance, I still have many happy memories of building assembled models from Revell even though they were poorly painted and badly built (fault of the builder, not the company.)
My only quibble is I wished the author would have spent more detail in describing how a kit goes from idea to market.
If you are a modeller who enjoyed building the planes, vehicles and ships of Revell, you will find this an enjoyable history into the company that helped millions (including me) find things to do on a rainy day.

A Musical Treat.......2003-02-10
This is a wonderful collection of Francois Couperin's keyboard music, co-edited by Brahms in the 1880s and republished by Dover in the characteristically attractive format and low price that are that publisher's hallmark. It includes a piece I've loved and wanted to learn ever since I first heard it, perhaps 20 years ago, on a fine 1970's recording of baroque harpsichord music by Sylvia Marlowe on Sine Qua Non. Les Baricades Misterieuses (the preface notes that Couperin's titles were "often eccentric and quaint) is a beautiful, warm, mellow meditation on cycles of fifths and other piquant chord changes B flat. But the volume is a rich compendium with much else in the way of interesting, varied, lovely short pieces.
François Couperin !.......2000-09-29
François Couperin is one of Frenchs best baroque composer. He is not widly known, but his music is one of the most expressive in that era. This edition contains all the orders from Couperins first too "books" plus the first order of the third "book". Of all the pieces, I think I can quote "Les baricades misterieuses" (the misterious barricades), of the sixth order, which is one of the most popular and enchanting pieces Couperin ever composed.
In conclusion, Dover reached it's goal by offering musicians the best music at the lowest price possible in a fairly good edition.

A careful study of a mysterious composer........2000-08-30
So little factual informaton exists about Francois Couperin that most biographers give but a brief sketch of the man's life and concentrate on his works. Phillippe Beaussant attempts a more complete picture of Couperin, and the result is a mostly satisfying, educated but (necessarily) speculative account of Couperin's life. Do not expect any drama here. The best chapters of the book deal with French baroque society, customs and art. His analysis of much of the music is lightweight, but is certainly enough to whet one's appetite for the actual stuff. Since reading this book I have become a devoted fan of Couperin's music.

Anyone suffering from unrequited love will find comfort and encouragement through this reading. Had she not suffered heartbreak, thousands may have lost the benefit of her significant power to love.

The primary significance of this work and we are deeply in debtto the fine editing of Baila Shargel, is that it presents to thepublic for the first time, Henrietta Szold the great writer. We come back to a time when letters were still carefully crafted; we bask in the warmth and honesty of her prose. We are continually stunned by her brilliance and begin to mourn not her loss or Ginzberg's but ours. It is we the Jewish people who have lost a great writer to the service of others, to the drudgery of editing which is so often women's work. This work is bound to become a classic. It shows yet another side of this very heroic woman who serves as a model for us all. More available at JCN!! END
