Starting with twenty-eight followers, Francisco Pancho Villa rose out of banditry to become a dynamic strategist who mastered the tactical use of a diverse array of weapons, including modern railroads and cavalry, to contest control of Mexico. In his early days as a brigand, the peasantry idolized him because he often gave them the largesse of his raids on the wealthy haciendas. His military career began in 1910 during the Mexican Revolution, and by the time of his defeat at the Battle of Celaya in 1915 he commanded 15,000 horsemen. Villa could be a generous patron to his loyal followers but a terrifying enemy. He believed that those whom he defeated earned the “privilege” of being executed by his own hand. During the bloodiest months of the Mexican Revolution, he even contended for control of the nation. He could not be intimidated by anyone, including the U.S. Army’s Punitive Expedition led by Gen. John J. Pershing, who was sent to capture Villa after his raids into New Mexico during 1916. He died as he lived, violently, the victim of an assassination squad in 1923. Robert Scheina analyzes this complex man and provides a solid overview of Mexico’s political history against the fabric of social and cultural turmoil.

"Villa: Soldier of the Mexican Revolution" provides a balanced, in-depth look at a fascinating revolutionary combat leader. The story of Pancho Villa, with his personal, political and military strengths and weaknesses is expertly woven into the political and military tapestry of revolutionary Mexico of the first two decades of the 20th Century. Scheina's encyclopedic understanding of Latin American political and military affairs shines through in this clear and concise book. Noteworthy is Scheina's handling of the vast parade of dictators, generals, moderates, revolutionaries and revolutionary military leaders. Scheina's clear presentation is the best I have seen. The author does the reader another favor; for ease of reference, all geo-locations are made in reference to Mexico City and denominated in linear miles.
Pancho Villa was a product of his times, a man who showed nothing but strength to his followers, confederated leaders and his enemies. Villa also relied on natural cunning and inherent intelligence. Pancho Villa was a strong, charismatic leader who gained tough, battle-ready horsemen through his ability to lead by example, provide for his followers, and ruthlessly dispatch enemies. While able to attract good quality, mounted infantry/cavalry during times of success, these irregulars tended to dissappear after a string of military reverses. Like so many irregular forces, they were strongest after a few victories. For much of the revolution, Villa also lacked trained infantry. What set Villa's irregulars apart from others was their ability to dismount and engage in vicious city-fighting for days on end.
Villa lived and fought during a period of great technological change. He used his mounted infantry for tactical attack and railroad-borne horsemen, artillery and machine guns for strategic movement. The changes of this era were also reflected in Villa's horsemen's frequent encounters with entrenched infantry which were protected by machine guns and barbed wire. Often, the elan of Villa's horse was able to carry the day. In the last days of horse cavalry, Villa's communications included the telephone and his reconnaissance motor cars and attempts with early aircraft.
At his best, Villa was a brilliant leader and tactician. He worked with the forces available to him and employed new weapons when made available. In weaker moments, Villa fell back on the tried and true tactics of his early victories, launching wasteful frontal cavalry charges against well-defended infantry. Charisma was not always enough. Late in his career, Villa was simply unable to adjust while under the pressure of numerous, trained and motivated enemy armies. "Soldier of the Revolution" provides an excellent glimpse into Mexico's revolution, Villa's response and the importance of the charismatic "strong-man" in Latin American politics. Scheina also provides the Mexican view of Pershing's campaign against Pancho Villa. A campaign of relevance to America's performance in World War I.

Dreams Reveal the Man.......2007-07-27
This book artfully traces Jung's psychological development as it revealed itself in his dreams and in his indefatigable labors to understand symbolic images. Since Dr. Jung and Dr. von Franz have dug very deep into the spirit of our Western culture, the book is a revelation. It artfully plumbs the nature and evolution of the Western spirit.
The accusations against Jung of all manner of malign actions are not dealt with in this book. These accusations have been dealt with extensively from every perspective elsewhere. References to many of the discussions are given in the text or notes. I know for a fact that Dr. von Franz was not unaware of some of Dr. Jung's weaknesses. This book is not a whitewash. That discussion is just not within the scope of the book.
It should be said, this book is not a biography. The book is a consideration of the mytho-poetic images and dream images that Dr. Jung dealt with in his personal and professional life. Dr. von Franz submits the images to intense scrutiny and in the process elaborates upon many of the emotional challenges that a modern Westerner confronts in his own soul.
The book is profound, penetrating, and challenging. It is another example of the scintillating exposition of symbolic material that we have come to expect from her.
Dr. von Franz was forty years younger than Dr. Jung and she was his closest collaborator in the last two decades of his life. For many Dr. Jung is a towering figure in Western thought and it must have been overwhelming for this young and gifted woman to work so closely with him for so long.
From their close collaboration follows one aspect of the book that will put some readers off. Dr. von Franz is not always judicious as a writer in restraining her expressions of admiration for Dr. Jung. This seeming lack of editorial restraint can sometimes have the opposite of the intended effect.
Something else in the book may bother a number of first-time readers. Dr. von Franz uses frequent and extensive citations of Dr. Jung's works. For some readers these many citations may make the book too fractured and derivative. For me, this was not a major problem, especially on re-reading.
It is important to note, that Dr. von Franz and Dr. Jung put great demands upon the reader. The demands are both intellectual and moral. They both write about the life-long endeavor to accommodate the will of the Great Other, however conceived, in one's individual life.
This book is not a light biographical sketch. Personally, I never tire of reading the insightful and challenging work of this author.
an extended study in idealization.......2001-09-02
The author, who is one of THE most under-rated and under-written-about female theorists who studied under Jung (where is there a substantial biography for her??), is always brilliant to read, her work packed with fascinating insights and an almost superhuman erudition. This book is no exception.
At the same time, however, it gets nowhere near the quality of her other books. Propped up by endless quotes from Jung's supposedly autobiographical MEMORIES, DREAMS, REFLECTIONS, a book I often go back to but always with the knowledge that it's been heavily censored, von Franz sustains a justificatory tone throughout that is embarrassing to read.
At one point, for instance, she deals with the accusation that Jung had anti-Semitic tendencies, perhaps because he had some shadow issues to work on. She quashes this notion strenuously and puts it all down to Jung's "optimism" and tendency to say too much (not to mention his opponents' projections...always a good place to go when defending one's allies). God forbid that Jung should cast a shadow!
It saddens me that von Franz so seldom struck out on her own without checking in with Jung first or crediting him with the tremendous innovations she brought to his thinking. But nowhere is her unwillingness to question Jung more evident here, where scarcely a paragraph escapes the praise piled high on the Great Man's head.
That he was a great man, a truly daimonic genius who gave us the golden key to transpersonal symbolism, does not change the fact that he was a human being who could be narcissistic, irritable, arrogant, impatient, misogynistic, intolerant, racist, bad-tempered, and downright cruel to the women he supposedly loved.
When I write I often refer to teachers who've impacted my insights about human nature; ordinarily, it would be inconsiderate for me to bring in their human flaws and blind spots. But were I to undertake a biography of any of them once they had shuffled off the mortal coil, it would be incumbent upon me not to whitewash them. You will find many interesting observations about Jung's life in this book; but the picture it offers of him is thoroughly one-sided.
An inspiring and personal biography of a great man........1998-06-27
This is Jung from the inside, by one of his most talented and most authentic followers. It is not just the dry facts but deep personal experience. All life is story and this is Marie-Louise von Franz's story of Jung as she knew him. An invaluable work.

It's astonishing that one could present a biography of Jung and not deal with the many allegations of unprofessional, irresponsible, and certainly bizarre behaviors that have been advanced about this man. For shame!

I can just hear the theme music from "Bonanza" as I leaf through the recipes in these books. Hard-working cowpokes will adore these authentic recipes from the American West.
How to Win a Cowboy's Heart is beautifully illustrated with black-and-white drawings from Western kitchens. Images of cowboy boots, horses, and rib-eye steaks decorate the recipes. This book, written for "Calicos" includes a handy Shopping Guide, and is organized by time of day. The chapters include: Good Morning Dear: Starting Off Right, Hungry By Noon: Western Dinner and Lunchtime Treats, Evening Shadows: Quiet Suppers at Home, and Red Letter Days: Memories to Share.
The recipe for Scalloped Potatoes on page 91 is remarkably similar to my own recipe. Who knew this New England baker was really a cowboy cook? The recipe includes a list of ingredients and step-by-step instructions on how to prepare the recipe. At the bottom of the page, there is a variation which suggests adding cheese to the recipe. The recipe is illustrated with a Pelham bit for a horses' bridle. Opposite the recipe is an article on how to impress the in-laws!
The recipes are varied and surprising. From Green Chili Grits to Hay and Straw to Ham Steaks and Red-Eye Gravy, you are sure to find an adventure for your taste buds in this entertaining book. The nutritional information was wisely left out of this book, with the liberal use of butter, cream, and red meats, check your cholesterol at the door!

I have read other books on mental disease and found this one easy to read and understand without all the psychiatric jargon. The book was concise,clear,and gave both a psychosocial,as well as a psychopharmacological perspective. I recommend this book without any reservations.

It's all we got.......2007-01-05
Milkowski does not do justice to the artist or person of Jaco. This seems a greater let down being that he actually hung with the guy quite a bit. There is so much to Jaco's story that seems to have been glanced over. Being as though I anticipated this so much probably contributes to my lack of enthusiasm for it. Could have been much better. It is just the only book on him.

I couldn't believe it when I finally found a book about Jaco. Where have I been? I was thinking of writing my master's thesis about Jaco a couple of years ago. But how could I top this book. What a great read. I read it in 2 days. I couldn't put it down. Of course when you love someone's music, and are amazed and saddened by someone's life like Jaco's, it's not hard completely diving into the book and not coming up for air. I wish someone would option this book for a movie. It's a great, yet tragic tale.

I thought I pretty much had an idea about Jaco's tragic life,but after reading this book I learned so much more.I do not read alot of books but this book kept my interest from beginning to end.If you play the bass you must read this book so you can understand how much you owe Jaco,if you do not play bass[which I do not]but have a love for music and are interested in look at rare individual you must read this book.Jaco like so many b4 him[Jimi,Janis,Brain Jones etc]had that special flare and magic and just tried to live to much oof life,in Jaco's case a mental disorder as well as drugs did not help.So from 1 lover of music [I play drums] to all who are in that catergory,please read this book.

I picked up this book out of curiousity after buying Jaco's solo album. I heard of him and I wanted to read about him. This book has changed my views on the music industry and performing and has ultimately made me a better musician. Jaco single handedly revolutionaized the electric bass to unimaginable proportions. No bass player should ever go without a Jaco album and no musician should go without reading this book. Informative, tragic and educational. I love this book and have have read it through four times. Jaco and his music will live in my heart forever.

Ms. Ashrawi's work is a vital read for two reasons: 1) it sweepingly brings to life the human side of the Palestinian tragedy; and 2) it is a first-hand account of the internecine international tug-of-war surrounding the many, and unsuccessful attempts to resolve this core element for any peaceful and long-lasting resolution of the Zionist-Palestinian conflict.
To state the obvious, Hanan Ashrawi is a Palestinian. She is erudite, accurate and humane in her discussions about her people, her land and the dreams and hopes she has for Palestine.
It is indeed unfortunate that there are not more Palestinians, writing about Palestine, who emulate her intellectual stature and integrity.
Hanan Ashrawi Fights for Human Rights.......2006-07-11
Anyone who is familiar with Hanan Ashrawi knows that she fights for human rights - some people may not like the type of humans she stands up for (Palestinians), but they are human none the less. She is a role model as a strong, articulate, out-spoken woman in the Middle East. This is an engrossing read coming from a voice that needs to be heard.

This is surprisingly dull, given that it is written by someone who has done so much to fight against human rights in the Middle East. Her side of peace is one we can all hope we won't ever see again!

I found this book to be excellent because it provides a good overview the Palestinian-Israeli problem from the point of view of a person living there.
It is disappointing that Ms. Ashrawi does not replace Arafat.

The Book is interesting and informative, however very subjective and at times misleading. The bias is a string that is woven throughout the book and does not leave allot for the reader to judge. As much as the book was interesting to read, the smell of propaganda could not be unnoticed.
