The stark honesty leaps out of every word to grasp you by the throat!
Marking the 50th anniversary of the start of the Korean War, Walking Through a Spider's Web is more than one man's account of war: it is a piece of history that should be shared so other generations can read and learn from the past.

Ordinary People; Extraordinary Acts.......2001-07-08
This is a nice little book, which might be read at one sitting. It is the story of two people who came from ordinary, even deprived, beginnings. They were ordinary people who were called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice-and did so as a natural act. Since the fiftieth anniversary of the Normandy Invasion, much has been made of "the greatest generation" who fought in World War II. Not very much has been said about those who served in Korea, even as the fiftieth anniversary of that "police action" is upon us. Some of the "great generation" of World War II service were called, or volunteered, to serve again; and they did so under even more difficult conditions. Members of the next generation joined them, and also made great sacrifices. Bill Fornes was a child of the Depression, but he wanted to fly. He left the coal fields of West Virginia to enroll at VPI and graduate, with difficulty, with an Air Force ROTC commission. He flew fifty missions in Korea and was shot down and captured by the Chinese. Technically, he was not a prisoner of war, because the Chinese kept him in isolation as a war criminal, charged with germ warfare. His wife, Nancy, did not know if he was alive, because he was not on the POW lists. She knew he lived only when he was released after thirteen months. After his release, Bill left the Air Force, but then went back in to finish his career. He did retire, but only after being separated with a short time to retirement, for which is qualified only by enlisting as a noncommissioned officer. Bill and Nancy tell their story in straightforward, parallel narratives, which are unpolished, unassuming narratives. They are ordinary people, who were called on for extraordinary acts. After retirement Bill became active in the ex prisoners of war organization, and helped to establish the National Prisoner of War Museum located at the Andersonville (Georgia) National Historic Site. His experience was also featured in early performances of the associated drama, "And Grace Will Lead Me Home". In the book, Bill says that he was prepared to die for his country, but he was not prepared to be a prisoner. He survived, and came home. A lot of POW's didn't. His story, and Nancy's, are moving tributes to the extraordinary spirit of ordinary people.

A Survival Guide for the Elementary/Middle School Counselor (A Marketplace Book)
ASIN: 1412003989
Release Date: 2006-07-06 |
Product Description
Counseling memoir. Twenty-five years of school counseling memories- humorous; serious and tragic, but all learning experiences.
Book Description
Understanding and overcoming the leading undiagnosed cause of infertility, miscarriage, menstrual problems, obesity, and hormonal disruption.
Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in the number of women diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which causes infertility and repeated miscarriage as well as more cosmetic problems, such as obesity that is resistant to normal weight-loss measures. Not surprisingly, women with this syndrome also suffer from depression and damaged self-esteem as a result.
Thus far, medical science has had little to offer women with PCOS. In this book, however, leading reproductive specialist Dr. Ronald Feinberg provides a new way of looking at the disorder, linking it to bodywide metabolic irregularities, insulin resistance, nutrition, activity, and stress-a combination of health issues that collectively make up what he has termed "Syndrome O." And this understanding brings new hope for overcoming it.
Written in a compassionate, inspirational, and motivational style, Healing Syndrome O discusses the causes and complications of this condition and provides a targeted plan to help women balance and repair their overall health, overcome symptoms, and, especially, restore their fertility.
Customer Reviews:
Filled with hope.......2007-09-18
I bought this book before reading any reviews on here, and frankly I wasn't surprised to find a handful of negative ones. I will admit that this was not an easy read, but at the same time it is the first thing regarding PCOS that has given me any hope at all. But I know plenty of people will be content with the more common explanation of it being all genetic and that we're not to blame. I certainly can't speak for everyone, but I know for myself, I have contributed to my current state. Having a doctor say that with appropriate behavior modification this syndrome can be healed, to me, this is a miracle. If you're not ready to take some responsibility, then there are plenty of other PCOS books out there that will keep you in your comfort zone, but if you're ready to do what it takes to take control of your body and your health, then read this book. You won't regret it.
Not so good if you have a weight problem - even worse if you don't........2006-07-21
IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A WEIGHT PROBLEM (including but not limited to diabetes, a tendency to higher insulin levels and overnourishment), this book is not for you. It basically states that eating well and keeping your insulin levels somewhat low will help your fertility. If you already do that, there is nothing else in there besides a biology lesson of how the female body works and medical/conventional alternatives for fertility treatments. What brings another point to mind: there is a lot of stress in this book on fertility/desire to get pregnant. Not so good if you are trying to live with PCOS and not even thinking about getting pregnant!!! Also, the book briefly mentions that stress may affect/cause PCOS, but the Author doesn't go deep into that - explanation of how this happens is lacking in comparison to the stress on overnourishment. I wish there was more information on the stress relation to PCOS! Last but not least: although the book stresses the relation between insuline level and PCOS, it doesn't touch the issue of what kind of exercise is better for lowering insulin levels: whether aerobic or muscle-toning exercises. So, in case you have high insulin levels and do need to lower it, would you buy a book that states that you should exercise but does not even mention what kind of exercise is better for you?
Very Informative.......2006-03-01
I have read a lot of information regarding PCOS. This book did an excellent job of explaining the complexities PCOS. It also addressed the treatment alternatives for infertility related to PCOS. I would recommend this book to anyone who has been recently diagnosed.
Very Informative!.......2005-08-02
I highly recommend this book. It has a lot of pertinent information. I have PCOS, and this book talks about this syndrome in a way that makes you understand it easily. So many doctors focus on one problem, but this book shows how this one problem affects your whole body. I am so glad I purchased this book!
Healing Syndrome O: A Strategic Guide..........2005-01-10
Although I have not been diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome, I have experienced dealing with issues of infertility. I think there is much to recommend this wonderful resource for any woman or couple interested in maximizing their fertility. I was very interested in the fact that you don't have to be overweight or show any of the more typical symptoms to be suffering from this metabolic imbalance, and that in fact, PCOS, or Syndrome O, as Dr. Feinberg calls it, is responsible for so many cases of unexplained infertility. I also thought the book was unique in offering as much scientific explanation as it did. I appreciated being able to go into as much or as little detail as I wanted to on any of the covered topics, however, I found myself able to follow and understand more than I ever have in the past due to the author's clear explanations and writing style. The motivational aspects of the book were not only very encouraging and empathetic to women, but empowering as well! That's never to suggest that there aren't women with intractable infertility issues - there are. I think the author is particularly sensitive in addressing that. I really loved this book and feel that it has made a difference in how I see myself in relationship to my body and health. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in starting a family or undergoing fertility treatments as well as the population of women who have or suspect they may have PCOS.

Not a Daughter--Darn it!.......2003-12-08
Looking through this book, I realized that I might have achieved more in this life if I had been a daughter. The supporting relationships between daughters and mothers, so well detailed in this book by Susie Kelly Flatau, would make any guy a bit envious. Don't get me wrong--fathers are O.K. And, being a son to a mother is fine too, but reading this book it brought home to me that I could neither fully appreciate nor appropriate that special relationship enjoyed by a daughter and her mother.
Mothers of Distinction.......2003-01-10
Browsing through the index one is aware that most of these names are not that familiar (some are very, as in the case of Luci and Lady Bird Johnson) to the average reader. What is familiar, however, are the testaments given to some very average, yet phenominal mothers who have had a significant impact on the shaping of their daughters ideas, dreams and accomplishments. Anyone reading this book becomes immediately aware that the so called women's "revolution" was taking place long before bras were burned and names were hyphenated and most of the real battles were being fought from the kitchen as often as from an office or boardroom. These are no ordinary women and the daughters they raised atest to that fact. As De Lamartine asserted "there is a woman at the beginning of all great things" and nowhere is this more evident than between these pages.
Although recipes are included from each mother/daughter team, this is so NOT a cookbook. It is a book to be placed by the bedside or on a table in the livingroom where one can just pick out a chapter at random and remember again just how important mother really was. It is a very personal journey and one that might even require a tissue or two. My only regret is that I cannot share this with my own mother who passed away before this book was published, but I can read and remember with a grateful heart.
A perfect gift for the mom in anyone's life!
storycircle.org/BookReviews.......2002-01-20
With a masterful hand of her own, Susie Kelly Flatau has captured the compelling dynamics of a positive mother-daughter relationship within this book. The enchanting tributes to their mothers by 33 prominent Texas women will entice readers to embark on their own reflective journey home to their mothers' arms.

I love this book and the designs presented. The author writes very clearly and is easy to follow her directions. A must have for rag quilters. She has some great designs and color combinations!
Sloppy?.......2003-09-16
Is that her real name?
I found some important information in this book about quilting with flannel. I did not care for the "projects" however. Book is overpriced for the content.

Book Description
At a time when our thirst for spiritual guidance has never been greater, Marsha Sinetar has located an oasis of hard-won wisdom that is as close as the neighbors next door. In The Mentor's Spirit, Marsha Sinetar shows readers a way to use our inborn "spiritual intelligence" to see the world and everything in it as a potential mentor--a life-affirming source of guidance and inspiration. True mentors are "artists of encouragement" who help us discover what is unique about our calling in life and help us pursue it. These spiritual guides are all around us, waiting to give generously: in children, in nature, in silence, in the lives of historical and contemporary leaders. Sinetar points the way to remain open to them and let them take us to a life enriched by challenges and cooperation.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2004-04-20
This book translates well to educators, people in business, or those who are looking to improve their relationships. Her ideas about mentoring can make communication clearer and leaders emerge. Another book that I recommend is "He Never Called Again".
These two books are highly recommended.
Blew me away! Perfect for the road.......2003-06-25
I wasn't expecting much from this tape. The book hadn't impressed me very much and I was thinking, "same old..."
However, as I listened I realized that Sinetar really has uncovered new ways to view mentoring. She distinguishes mentoring spirit from mentors in a unique, compelling way. Think of light flowing through a pane of glass. We care about the light -- not the glass. Similarly, the mentor is only a transmitter. What we want is the spirit transmitted by the mentor.
From this perspective, any person, group or even physical object can be a mentor - anything that embodies a spirit that offers us insight, understanding or support. John Muir, for instance, chose nature as a mentor to escape a horrendous family situation. And she never met the artist Ben Shahn, but she learned from his artwork. I can relate: I learned from Cynthia Cooper's book She's Got Game (which I also reviewed) -- and I've never held a basketball.
Most important, our own silence helps us grow and any meditation, quiet time or sabbatical can enrich us the way a mentor might.
There are many other gems on this tape and I plan to listen again...and again. Perhaps most interesting is the glimpse we get into Sinetar's own life and business. We learn that she regularly takes sabbaticals lasting several months -- and once a week she won't work at all. She no longer attends corporate dinners in the evening, although it's normally considered part of the consultant's job.
Sinetar recognizes that people have to be careful as they operate within an organization, and I think she underestimates the dfificulty of carving out space in a structured hierarchy. However, I have met folks who swim with ease in the corporate sea, and those will probably resonate even more, as Sinetar gracefully combines spirituality, personal growth and business systems.
I was reminded of Carolyn Myss: Despite widely divergent styles and content, both authors create and integrate.
Sinretar is far more accessible than Myss and her spiritual challenge is more of a gentle hill than an icy mountain. But don't expect Sinetar to offer a cake walk. One of the best parts of the book compares Olympic level goals with more mundane, amateur achievements, and she cites Neil Postman's wonderful book about our entertainment culture.
We want everything to be like television: no effort, no preparation and pleasantly entertaining, she says. As a former college professor, I have to agree: I've heard a college senior say, "I like this text because it has a lot of pictures."
Heading for a vacation trip? Pack this one in the car and prepare to come back refreshed and, quite possibly, changed.
A different definition of mentoring.......2003-02-26
Mentoring is now a new concept that becomes increasingly popular in companies, government agencies, schools and volunteering organizations. Sietar unfolds a way to use our inborn "spiritual intelligence" to see the world and everything in it as a potential mentor - not only are humans beings our mentors, but books, articles, songs, nature and silence as well. Mentors are the artists of encouragement.
A must have book for spiritual individuals.
By Thei Zervaki,
author of Globalize, Localize, Translate
Mentors Must Be Choosy.......2001-08-11
I have benefitted greatly from much of Sinetar's work, but this book takes too glib an approach to the mentoring of those working for corporations and organizations, some of which, no matter how excellent their business technique, are responsible for great harm to our society. Sinetar needs to note this and make some judgments about authentic business practice for the common good and that which is predatory, no matter how "enlightened." The mentoring process itself should be rigorously self-critical in a way which opens the door for individuals to confront their own role in the empowerment of businesses and organizations, for good or for ill. In this way the social transformation now needed may be accelerated rather than hindered by businesses, organizations, and those who work for them. I'm not hearing that in this book.
Not all that accessible a concept.......1999-07-19
I found the concepts of this book hard to follow, although Sinetar writes well enough. Like her "Do What You Love...", it was somewhat abstract and did not offer enough pragmatism for my taste. However, there were "golden" moments in the book, especially when she describes actual events and people who embody her definition of a "Mentor's Spirit". A book to be read AND discussed with others. A book for those who aspire to be a different sort of mentor and are ready to take on the awesome responsibilty Sinetar seems to imply.

A must for the medieval & Jewish Historian.......2000-06-19
The late Isadore Twersky of Harvard, an internationally reknowned scholar and walking repository of countless disciplines of knowledge paved the way for a particularly grand level of scholarship in his Rabad of Posquieres. With a keen sense of language, a broad and sweeping grasp of history, an all encompassing awareness of the medieval mind and the protocols and methodology of its legal writings, Twersky portrays a multifaceted medieval legal thinker and the many tensions in the writings and thought of this pivotal figure of 12th century Provence. Twersky's treatment of Rabad reveals an extraordinary mastery of intellectual history and serves to illuminate through the Rabad, the life and history of the Jews in southern France in the 12th century. The work is a supreme specimen of Twersky's style and multifaceted approach toward the study of religious thinkers. His historic thrust, halakhic focus and analytical methodology are not for the intellectual faint hearted and will require serious and proficient knowledge of Jewish texts, legal sources and medieval history to appreciate the profundity of Twersky's analysis and contribution to Jewish thought and intellectual history. Twersky's work is a must for the Jewish historian, Talmudist, Halakhist and philosopher.
