This edited volume comprises a series of essays about Patrick Maynard Stewart Blackett, one of the greatest scientists of the 20th century, as well as a prominent figure in the Royal Navy and British politics.
Blackett was battle-hardened in World War I and contributed directly to the Allied victory in World War II. Showing precocious ability in mechanical invention and benefiting from the Royal Navy's revolutionary education - the most advanced available in Britain in the early 1900s - Blackett had gone to war in 1914 aged 16. Escaping death and drowning, he saw action in two major battles, and spent several gruelling years on patrol in small ships. When the Royal Navy sent its young officers to be "civilized" at Cambridge after World War I, Blackett decided to stay on.
Blackett would go on to become one of the most remarkable scientists of his generation, winning the Nobel Prize for physics in 1948 for his work on cloud chambers. He also helped prepare Britain for war, working with Henry Tizard in the1930s on the Committee for the Scientific Survey of Air Defence, which led to the installation of radar stations, and later developing the science of operational research, which helped defeat the U-boat menace. Although not a pacifist, he was strongly opposed both to nuclear weapons and to indiscriminate bombing, on grounds of morality and efficacy. Blackett would go on to advise Harold Wilson in Britain and Jawarharlal Nehru in India on defence and science policy. Throughout his life, Blackett would keep the commanding presence and habits of a naval officer, which helped him apply his influence.

The author was actually born in China hence her authentic recipes. Her books are a treasure and are like having a family friend giving you all their rich culinary history. We are so lucky that she writes in English.
I read that the author's husband lost 20 pounds in one month eating these recipes and 55 pounds by the time she had completed the book.
Best Chinese cookbook I've used.......2006-05-20
I have made several dishes from this cookbook and all of them have turned out great. My husband is Chinese and has not been impressed with dishes I've tried from other cookbooks, but he has really enjoyed the dishes prepared from this book. The flavors are very authentic, and not overly sweet or oily, like you normally find in restaurants.
The layout of the recipes are very easy to follow. She breaks the ingredient list into separate categories, such as "marinade", "sauce", "to complete the dish", so you can easily prepare the dish in stages.
I also like that the recipes are healthy, and I don't feel that taste is sacrificed to make the dishes healthy. She also uses many of the same ingredients throughout the book, so you'll probably need to stock your pantry with items that you'll need to go to an asian market for, but once it's stocked, you'll be set for a while.
The only modification I normally make is adding about double the meat to the dishes. Her versions are more authentic, being that in China meat is not as central to meals like it is in America, but I like having more meat.

Eileen Yin-Fei Lo is an excellent teacher and I have several of her books, and love them all, but to be real honest, this is not a low-fat low-cal cookbook. This is a tiny portion cookbook.
At first glance her recipes seem to be low-cal, low-fat, but look again. For instance, tonight I made the pepper steak recipe. Delicious yes, but the recipe called for 4 oz. of meat and 3/4 lb. of peppers and this was supposed to feed 6 people! Maybe that would be satisfactory if you were making several dishes and soup, but for a Sunday night one pot dinner it was just enough for two, tripling the calorie and fat content listed.
Yes buy the book and cook from it, just take a real look at portions and how many a dish is supposed to feed and then ask yourself is this really going to feed my family?

A great book. I had been searching for an authentic Chinese cookbook for some time. I took a gamble on this book by Eileen Yin-Fei Lo, and it was a rewarding pay-off. This book has everything. Some information on the history of Chinese cooking, on buying and seasoning a wok, on steam-proofing dishes, on some of the more hard to find ingredients, and personal stories from her upbringing. Not to mention, some fantastic recipies including one I've wanted to try for some time, fish soup. While prep-work is not one of my favorite parts of cooking, (although somewhat necessary in these recipies)the reward of a fantasic dish is well worth it. Added bonuses are sections on how to properly make rice (harder than you may think), and calorie counting information for every dish. I can't wait to try some of the other books by Eileen Yin-Fei Lo. If they're 1/2 as good as this one, they already have my approval.
Excellent low fat Chinese cooking.......2001-03-05
We can't say enough about this book since we began cooking with it. Although it took a little time to stock our pantry with the ingredients, it was well worth the time. Thankfully we have some local Asian markets. There has yet to be a recipe that we've made that we have not thoroughly enjoyed. Surprisingly our picky 2 year old has also enjoyed the food. The book is extremely well written with straight forward step by step instructions that allow us to make exceptional cuisine. By no means does the food taste low in fat. The tastes are superb. We plan to purchase another recipe book by Eileen Yin-Fei Lo.

Very Disappointing!.......2006-04-11
The first 3 out of 5 guitars I searched for were not listed. Missing certain models of Kay, Dean, Silvertone to mention a few. When I looked for a model of Martin, that model was missing also. I found all of the models in a different price guide. And yes, all of the missing models are vintage.

Here items from my personal stuff which are NOT listed : -european 1998 DeArmond by Guild M75 & M75T ( high quality Guitars for Europe which were no more produced because of better quality than US Instruments by Guild ... ), Fresher Guitars ( only a little remark, who knows how much a Fresher T-Bird costs ? I know ... ), Fenix Guitars, Dual Showman Cab 2x15 ( Hendrix, Dale & Townsend played it ), limited Epi Guitars ( like the Elvis Signature from 1996 ), Condor Guitars ( very very rare with inbuilt effects like Fresher ). All NOT listed. Disappointed ... Klaus

This is an indispensable reference for guitar collectors. That said, it is not perfect, only one tool for basing values. Ebay is the value setter for any collectable since it encompasses a worldwide market. This edition did not accurately reflect the increase in values for some Fender products, for example. Overall, it has a lot of good info on an amazing variety of popular and obscure guitars, basses, amps and effects.

This is perfect for beginners. The author offers a short list of basic must have items, she discusses different types of ink, what they're used for and how to use them. The same goes for rubber stamps, paper, etc. She describes different techniques and give clear directions and the photos are great. I highly recommend this book for beginner such as I. This beautiful book should be in the library of anyone who loves the open spaces on Cape Cod. It is packed wiht information that can't be found elsewhere. And that information is authoritative--the authors are botanists who really do know what they are talking about.

Samuel Barber (1910-1981) was one of the most important and honored American composers of the twentieth century. Writing in a great variety of musical forms--symphonies, concertos, operas, vocal music, and chamber music--he infused his works with poetic lyricism and gave tonal language and forms new vitality. Servicable biography of this great American composer.......2007-03-16
Being a fan of (some of) Barber's music, I was interested in finding out more about him. I suspect an academic will find this book satisfying - it goes through his works in scholarly detail - but I found it uncompelling. I think the main problem is that Barber was not a particularly interesting guy - you will find no juicy tidbits here. Where this could have been interesting is delving into his personal life - but it doesn't venture there. I was disappointed. By the way my favourite Barber works are adagio for strings (of course), violin concerto, and the school for scandal overture.

Well, I thought the book was a respectable mix of biographical information and analysis, not too much of one or the other. It is organized (roughly) by opus number, meaning one can find virtually all the information about a specific work condensed in a particular section--with the overall outline being chronological. This structuring is easy and accessible.
Theory hogs, like me, may want a few more examples--but if so, we're just being greedy. The author's analyses of the works are well-done, cursory without being useless. She neither fawns over her subject, nor butchers him. Perhaps a bit more biographical information would be nice--Barber's love life is always touched upon at tangents, never explained. But maybe such information is simply not to be found.
The esoteric nature of the subject precludes me from recommending it generally--but for anyone with the slightest interest in Mr. Barber, this is certainly one of the best resources out there.
And what do we say of Samuel? Reactionary, fuddy-duddy? Snobbish European turning his back on his American home, or a man who simply recognizes good music when he hears it? Or, like Brahms, a fusion of past and present who only appears conservative when compared with the silly extremists? I lean towards the latter.
Barber enjoyed Brahms, and there's a similarity stapling the two together here. Both took a rich harmonic and modern language, Brahms with his soup of pivot chords and chromatic thirds, Barber with his polychords, changing meters, and quartal implications, reinvigorating ideas and forms that some describe as depleted. And both were, in some sense, fearless. Now of course neither was immune to public opinion--the failure of Anthony and Cleopatra cracked off a bit of Barber's heart--but nevertheless, we find two men who by and large did not care to defend their artistic choices. Barber wrote music of lyrical melodic line when the flavor de jure was prickly textures or avant-garde nonsense.
I have no opinion on whether or not that was the right decision; but I bestow the highest respect on Barber's intense drive for perfection. 71 years he lived, and left behind a paucity--but a paucity of perfection. The concertos are jewels! The songs are staples (or should be)! Barber forced and tempered his creations: many works were revised after the first performance--and, which is to be respected all the more--usually made shorter by it. Excess notes deleted, and tight statements left behind.
This book honors that aspect of him well, and I'm glad to have gotten to know him through it.

I'm currently researching Barber for my Masters Thesis. This is the best book available currently on Barber. The variety of information and sources she offers is excellent. In addition to the biographical information, Heyman presents each of his pieces in reference to certain time periods of his life and goes on to discuss these pieces in depth. An incredibly valuable resource for me and anyone interested in Samuel Barber.

I read this book with the same excitement that I would a... thriller. It is exciting to find out so much about a manwhose music is among America's best! Barbara Heyman has captured thespirit of Samuel Barber's life and compiled it into a readableorganized format. Be sure to read all of the footnotes/endnotes.They contain some of the most wonderful tidbits of information.Authoritative writing!
As close to a "definitive" study as we're ever likely to see.......1999-05-01
As a lifelong student of Barber and his music, I was thrilled at the depth and scope of this work. It contains many musical examples and, most tellingly, reveals what music Barber loved and was studying when he composed various works. And it doesn't pull any punches in its treatment of Barber's tendencies toward depression and alcoholism. I spoke to Barbara Heyman a few years ago and she said she was working on a companion volume but had no firm idea when it might be published. We can only hope it will be soon!

Great Work.......2002-05-13
Shabtai Teveth (Weizmann Institute, Tel-Aviv University) is one of the few official Ben-Gurion's biographers. Teveth made a great effort in researching the evolution of Ben-Gurion's mindset (based on declassified behind close door transcripts and personal dairy) regarding the "Arab question." The book focuses on Ben-Gurion's limited contacts with the Palestinian Arab leaders, and clearly paints a different picture than then one usually available for public consumption. Surprisingly, Ben-Gurion displayed a pragmatic understanding of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, which publicly has been suppressed for propaganda purposes. From my point of view, this book is a must read book.
