    Book Description

War, Religion and the Pursuit of Sex — the title says it all. But what the title doesn't capture is the grim determination and raw courage displayed on the battlefield, when death is just a hand grenade away. Or the camaraderie existing between fighting men, differences in rank notwithstanding. Albeit unorthodox in its handling of subjects like religion, sex and kowtowing to the military top brass, the book is a must-read if you're looking for accounts of action, loyalty and tenderness.

        Book Description

Malinowski is known internationally as one of the founders of social anthropology, as the creator of modern field work, as a great writer and an inspiring teacher. Until now little has been known about his personal life and thoughts. This book reveals for the first time his marriage and domestic life, and clarifies his relationships with colleagues, with his students and with a wide spectrum of friends. The letters in The Story of a Marriage were written by Malinowski and his wife, Elsie Masson, from 1916 to her death in 1935. They chronicle their meeting and their subsequent extraordinary marriage, showing Malinowski in a new light, not just as a teacher and scholar, but as husband, father and friend. His wife, so far largely unknown, is shown as a humorous, courageous and talented woman.

Volume I covers the letters written in Australia and New Guinea, from their first meeting in 1916 to the beginning of 1920 when they leave for Europe. Volume II begins with their arrival in England in April 1920 and details their lives together as he achieves success and international fame while her illness, multiple sclerosis, gradually forces her retreat from action and involvement.

The Malinowskis lived in half-a-dozen countries and visited many more, and the letters record their wandering life. They bring in leading figures such as Sir James Frazer, and Malinowski's students, many of whom went on to become famous anthropologists themselves. There are also fascinating glimpses of attitudes and day-to-day life in the twenties and thirties, including the rise of Nazism and Fascism.

2 out of 5 stars Marginal, Nothing Groundbreaking.......2007-08-28

This was OK, but contained nothing new or groundbreaking - what I would call "Master of the Obvious" advice. I was really disappointed that the author even had a chapter advising that improving your looks would make you feel better. What was bad about the advice was she used as examples a man who got a face lift and a woman who paid a professional shopper to completely overhaul her wardrobe. Come on, Mira, get a grip!!! It was at this chapter that I lost all respect and to me the book lost credibility. I still can't believe she would include something so shallow. I'm just glad I didn't pay full price for this.

4 out of 5 stars Simple principles to give you more energy.......2006-07-26

Here are the teachings of this book summarized. Here is how to have more energy:

Quit worring about other peoples expectations. This is a huge drain on energy. Live up to your own standards.

Do things daily that are meaningful. What are your priorities?

Pray in a meaningful way, have a dialog with God.

Do what you really want to, stop doing what you do not like.

Imagine what you will be like with emotional energy. Make it real in your mind.

Look forward to a bright future.

        Have fun in life!

Don't cry over spilt milk, move on.

Envy is poison and Guilt is Stupid.

and much more, very basic teachings that are common sense but we all need to be reminded of these things. If you want to examine these areas buy the book, if you know all of this, keep looking else where. This book is very basic.

5 out of 5 stars Sigh of relief............2006-07-09

Run, dont walk and get your credit card. You ,may think- I cant I have no energy. Well after this book, you WILL. You will literally feel the weight being lifted off your shoulders as you read. You will not believe how incredible this book is. Ever wonder why you are feeling blah? I couldnt figure it out either. I thought there was something wrong with me. I exercise, eat well, take care of myself but I felt too pooped to pop. This book will literally wrap you in a big hug and slap you upside the head as well. I could feel myself feeling lighter as I read. EVERY possible thing you could possibly think of that you think is bringing you down can be tied to emotional fatigue. Mira addresses every issue.... And what to do. If that doesnt work or you cant do a particular solution, she offers another. I cant even begin to tell you how great this book is. You will feel like your old self and feel full of energy again. I feel like I can be me again. Thank you Mira!!!!

5 out of 5 stars I read lots of self help book and this is one of the very good ones........2006-06-29

Bought this after reading her other book "Is He Mr. Right?" which I recommended to my girlfriends. I briefed it and thought it was too simplistic so I was going to give it away. Then 1 night I couldn't sleep and read the book backwards and it was very good. So good that it was used in my meeting w. employees and it motivated them to be better. I plan to re-read, take notes, then pass this book on to others who will benefit from it. Looking forward to reading her 3rd book too "Too good to Leave, Too Bad to Stay".

5 out of 5 stars Attitude Is Everything!.......2006-02-01

We all know people who drag around, whine and complain and can't take the initiative to make things happen in their lives. A copy of this book might be a life saver for them.
It's a good one for even high-energy people to have on hand. Every now and then things get you down, but dipping into this book gives ideas to jump start your enthusiasm again.
When you read a section, you say "of course," but it is good to be reminded of these. Some concepts may be new to you.
        Examples of these "secrets" are:
        *negative people bring you down
*unfinished business is an energy drain
        *embrace the present
        *never envy anyone
Mostly the book benefits you by giving you perspective. We all have a lot going on in our lives, but keeping it in perspective makes it much easier to deal with. Attitude is everything!

5 out of 5 stars Lusophone cuisine at its finest.......2005-08-11

If you like to sample dishes from different parts of the world, this book is a great find. Not only does Cherie Hamilton include recipes from all the coutries where Portuguese is the official language (8 countries on 4 continents) as well as from countries where Portuguese is a widely-spoken unofficial language, she also gives history for each of the dishes. This brings the recipes into context, and introduces the reader/chef to a world that many may not be too familiar with. I haven't tried all of the recipes yet, but so far, everything has been absolutely delicious! Bom apetite!!

4 out of 5 stars Can we please have a British edition.......2005-03-17

This is an excellent cookery book, with a historical and cultural dimension, an excellent work altogether, but... the language is American English. I have enjoyed the recipes I have tried but some I just cannot understand.

Perhaps we all know that mold, flavor and savoring are American spellings for mould, flavour and savouring, no big problem there. We can guess that counter is the working surface where you work in your kitchen. Then comes skillet. The book uses a skillet for lots of recipes. I wondered what that might be. Eventually I found it in a dictionary. It is American for frying pan. I still have not found out what a chafing dish is, that one I don't know at all. When it comes to the ingredients in your recipe, there are problems too. What on earth is cilandro? What is collards and collard greens? What are navy beans and Great Northern beans? Please, can we please have a British edition.

        1 out of 5 stars I returned my copy.......2005-01-09

The substitution of margarine for butter, egg-beaters for eggs, and turkey for beef, as allowed in these recipes, made me apprehensive. Then I looked up a couple of dishes I knew, and she's got them wrong. Eggs and Basmati rice in Minche? And what is "white" soy sauce?
Regular whole wheat flour does not substitute well in chapatis; and I've never heard of sugar in chapati dough, nor so much oil (5 table spoons to 1 1/2 cups flour), plus an additional brushing with 1/4 cup butter. Chapati dough is not supposed to (and will not) rise, as there is no leavening agent.
If familiar recipes are not authentic, one cannot trust the unfamiliar ones. A saving grace for the book would have been to tap into the wealth of interesting history or anecdotes to accompany the recipes, but this is either not done at all, or skimpy at best.

5 out of 5 stars Around the world in your kitchen.......2004-08-19

I bought this book out of curiosity and I am glad I bought it. It's the sheer variety of food, cuisine styles, ingredients. They come from all continents and latitudes. Most ingredients are easily available from large supermarkets or specialist shops. There is a list of mail-order sources, but they are in the United States. The glossary helps in more than one way. I couldn't find morcela but the glossary suggested black pudding as a replacement. The book has an average of one recipe each page, in a total of more than 330, in a combination of flavours from around the world. Something else I like is the section on Suggested Menus. It is excellent if you want to throw a themed party like a Brazilian Party Buffet or a Christmas Eve Supper as they do in Portugal.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you for the PANATAS.......2004-04-04

This is an excellent cookery book with a lot of variety, not much can be missing. In all the places where I have been in Portugal all the cake shops have these delicious egg and cream tartlets with sugar and cinnamon on top they call pasteis de nata. Now you can buy them in the UK, where they are known by the abbreviated name PANATAS. Some supermarket chains stock them but not near where I live. When I saw a recipe for pasteis de natas, I mean PANATAS, in this book I bought it straight away. I can now have PANATAS any time. The recipe works quite well.

Large clear color photographs make pattern identification easy. Each page includes information such as pattern name, company, dates of production, colors, and number of items in the line. The Florences also indicate the cutting or etching patterns, which are often hard to identify, with photos large enough for the etchings to be seen. I turn to this one often; it's been invaluable in identifying some of my more obscure patterns. This is a must book for glassware collectors!

        5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2006-11-12

this is a very informative book. came in great shape and within a few days.

3 out of 5 stars This Vol IV has very rare patterns, should be noted.......2006-11-07

The earlier volumes have the more common patterns, title should reflect this. I, like others, have never seen more than a couple of these pieces. A good book otherwise, though would have liked to know which items are available in each pattern instead of just the number of items in each. It is difficult to determine if you would like to collect a certain pattern otherwise. Book seems to hint that more information is known, but just not included. In nearly all cases, the pictures are excellent. Index includes previous volumes, a great help.

          Book Description

The dovetail joint, which woodworkers rely on for making boxes and drawers, is the hallmark of fine craftsmanship. This unique and comprehensive handbook unlocks the intricacies of the classic joint. Woodworkers will learn exactly how to design and lay out all forms of the dovetail, and how to saw and chisel the mating parts for a perfect fit. With detailed explanations at every step and a refreshingly contemporary approach, master craftsman Ian Kirby shows how to achieve superb results with traditional hand tools as well as modern router jigs. Variations include the through, single-lap and double-lap dovetail; the secret miter dovetail; dovetail housings; and rail-to-leg dovetails. Every serious woodworker will need to own this essential reference.

3 out of 5 stars Have to go against the crowd.......2007-09-03

I'm afraid I have to go against the crowd here. Personally, I didn't take much from the book. It does contain a great deal of information, and some of it good, but it's actually too detailed to keep my interest. Ian also cuts tails first which is opposite of my own learning. That doesn't mean the advise is bad, just inconsistant with my basics. It does have good info on layout which I'll take from it, but the rest seems be "detailed overview" to me.

5 out of 5 stars Just Finished the Read....Awesome!.......2006-05-29

If you have ever watched the Frank Klaus video on handcutting dovetails and then went and then tried it...I know I got less than spectacular results. I guess there is a difference between someone needing to make a fully dovetailed drawer in 20 minutes to put food on the table vs me, joe woodworker that cranks out one project a month if I am lucky. I've read a million articles on dovetailing, and though many are good, this is certainly the best. Why? Kirby explains everything from stance to starting a kerf correctly. Really, if you can cut a straight line I think you can cut a dovetail, but cutting a straight line is very hard to do and Kirby addresses alot of that. The exercises seem sound and I cannot wait to try them. I don't think I will ever make a dovetailed drawer in 20 minutes using Kirby's methods, but I am sure it will improve my quality...and for joe woodworker, that may be good enough.

The book was well written and organized. THe pictures are especially good and made the process easier to understand. The book does an excellent job of detailing a process that simply takes quite a bit of practice to perfect.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to joinery and more........2005-12-08

Kirby has written extensively in magazines and I always enjoyed his articles. I believe he came from a traditional English woodworking backgroud which might explain his penchant for detail. In this book - 150 or so pages covering a single joint - he delves into every how and why imaginable for making dovetails. This is a real treasure trove for hands-on woodworkers. I found, too, after reading it that I started thinking more about all of my woodworking which (I think) improved it. A great resource that should be in all woodworking bookcases next to Krenov and Pye.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on handcut dovetails.......2005-07-07

I have plenty of articles and books on cutting dovetails by hand. I have dutifully followed the steps, instructions, etc. provided yet my dovetails are still not as good as I would like them to be. However, Kirby's book is the first one that explained the basics in a clear form, provided a good set of steps and REASONS behind why things are done in a certain order.

After reading Kirby's book and following his techniques, my dovetails are far better. I also bought a copy for my brother, and he too likes this book alot.

            Book Description

Most people are at some time confronted with drug use socially, professionally or within their own families. And one does not have to be a drug user to be profoundly affected by them on a personal level. Forbidden Drugs explains to the general reader the nature and effects of the various
illicit drugs, including heroin, cocaine, marijuana, and hallucinogens, the impact they have on individuals and society, and the issues and controversies that surround them. It discusses the reasons why people decide to use these drugs, the natural history of drug use, the nature of addiction, and
the treatments which are available for those with drug-related problems. Throughout the book, myths and hyperbole are critically dissected. Also, jargon is carefully avoided, but considerable detail is provided based upon the professional experience of the authors, and a survey of the scientific
literature. Finally, there is a thorough evaluation of current UK policy on drugs with some proposals for limiting the damage caused to individuals and society, and for reducing problem drug use in the future. This perceptive book acknowledges that the interest in drugs and their effects extends
beyond those who actually use them. Parents, teachers, health professionals, politicians and health economists, students and others are all aware of drug use going on around them. With the information presented in this book, readers will be able to react constructively and make informed decisions
when confronted with drug use professionally or socially, or when asked for advice by friends or colleagues.

5 out of 5 stars Good information for the drug novice........1998-12-13

I am a third year law student at Arizona State University and I checked this book out of the library for a paper I was writing. I found that this book was well written and a good book for a person with little or no experience with drugs. I am planning on going into criminal law and have been looking for more information on drugs and drug use. This is a good book for the inexperienced parent, criminal lawyer, or anyone else looking for information on drugs, their effects, and how they are used. The book also contains interesting historical information about drug use. It is not too technical and is pleasant to read.

This treatise is Febreze on cigarette smoke on old sweat. A dented tin of butter cookies not from Switzerland. This is B flat maj; you know, the lone debutante (raven-haired, beautiful) struggling eloquently against the tide of cloned white dresses. Rock always looked like this to a select few--everything seen through a broken 110 camera--the shutter goes ping and everything falls out of the frame, down the stairs, and on its feet. You want to know what it's like on and off the "tour" "bus"? Here.

If you like rock and roll. If you can read. Buy this book! You need it. Michael Ruffino is a stone solid genius. And his sense of the ironic in EVERYTHING is just plain brilliant.
