Book Description
Husband and wife archaeologists Florence C. and Robert H. Lister and their two children traveled the archaeological world from 1940 to 1990. They produced numerous respected studies in the field of Southwestern archaeology and ceramics. Pot Luck, however, takes the Lister bibliography in a new a direction. Written in the years following Robert Lister's death in 1990, Pot Luck describes professional archaeology in personal terms, offering lively portraits of premier archaeologists and archaeological expeditions alongside vignettes of the Lister children at play and the Lister marriage at work.
Pot Luck follows the Listers on expeditions in Mexico, the Middle East, Spain, and the Southwest. Lister offers a happy mix of expert knowledge, professional experience, personal reflection, and wonderful writing.
A lighthearted account of fifty years of archaeological fieldwork, and a serious look at the worldwide role of ceramics in cultural understanding.

Pots - bones of civilization - and the lucky finders.......2002-08-26
Potsherds, it seems, are as important to archeologists as bones to anthropologists. They both last. They both tell part of the human story. Somewhat in the tradition of Osa Johnson's famous chronicle, *I Married Adventure* of the previous generation, Florence Lister takes the reader along with her family through five continents and many years in search of ceramics, ancient and colonial.
Florence and her husband Bob, both archeologists, with their two young sons in tow, pursued pothunting in such diverse places as Glen Canyon in the American Southwest before it was inundated by Lake Powell and the Aswan High Dam area in Africa before it also went underwater. From the 1940s to the 1990s, they did a great deal of contract archeology, i.e. investigating areas such as dams, highways, pipelines and the like that contain historical debris such as potsherds, bones, tools and tiles before they are swept away by modern civilization. The Listers contributed considerably to the body of knowledge about connections between pueblo Indians of the American Southwest and those of Mexico and Mesoamerica as well as trade routes that brought colonial pottery from Spain and Italy to the Americas. The hard science is made more lively and interesting by the personal details.
For example, the JFK assassination occurred when the family was in Wadi Halfa in Africa. Their Nubian servants insisted on sending a cable of condolences to Mrs. Kennedy, who had played an active role in the "Save the Monuments of Nubia" campaign. Near Escalante in Utah, they uncovered more evidence about the disappearance of Everett Ruess. They discovered dishes Cortez used and roofing erected by Columbus' party. They found Genoese pots in Spanish ports, investigated porcelain in Japan (at the "climbing kilns"), T'ang pottery in China, amphorae in Greece and, like detectives, discovered old paintings depicting pottery that had found its way from Seville in Spain to the Americas.
This book sort of grows on you. At the beginning, the language is a bit stilted and self-conscious, but after the author gets into the groove and finds her zone, you begin to participate in the exciting life the family led (not without some danger; they got mugged in Jamaica and got into another tight spot in Morocco).
If you're at all interested in archeology (incidentally, the American spelling is "archeology" and the British is "archaeology") you'll relish this account and remember both scientific conclusions and personal anecdotes. If you're not at all interested in the subject, you won't even be reading this review anyway. But for the former group of people, it's a good, informative, and exciting read.

Great recipes, entertaining read, poor editing........2006-11-07
I've always been what Tod refers to as a "Right Brain" cooker, which means I mix and match.. from when I asked for an Orange Cream Pie as a child instead of a Lemon Cream Pie for a dessert when my mom asked, to today when I 'discovered' that mixing a frozen Shrimp Scampi with a garlic seasoned rice and cheesy broccoli tastes pretty good. I'm also a firm believer in pasta and pizza (with premade crusts) as quick, easy and tasty meals. Almost nothing I've ever made has been based on an actual recipe and yet I eat pretty decently for a bachelor.
Recently I've gained the urge to branch out a bit more so have begun to pick up some cookbooks. Tod's book attracted my attention in my search and I picked it up.
The first thing I'll say is that I appreciate that it doesn't assume anything. Whenever any possibly confusing term is used, the definition is introduced. The section on 'what you need in the kitchen' is very helpful. The recipes all seem like I could easily do them (and I will be trying one or two over the weekend). I did find, as I was flipping through this and another cookbook with a similar concept, that different cooks' likes really come out when reading their recipes. The other book had an emphasis on dill. Tod's book, well, let's just say that I think he probably thinks of sour cream as one of the greatest inventions ever (since I like sour cream too, this is not a complaint, only a happy observation!)
I do have one complaint though, and it's that this book is pretty sloppily edited. The very first section's introduction has the word 'hart' instead of 'hard'. Cross references to chapter numbers often don't work (fortunately the chapter title is usually named also so a quick look at the Contents will resolve this for the reader). There's one recipe "Sourdough Buttermilk Pancakes" (or similar) which refers to a mix created in another chapter, only I haven't been able to find the mix. On two facing pages, each has a 'side box' where the last sentence or two is obviously missing. Each individual error by itself isn't much, but taken together it means that I'll be doubly careful when picking a recipe that something's not left out...
That said, I would give this 4 1/2 stars if I could, which would have been my original rating (as I very rarely give out 5's).
Best Cookbook You Can Buy.......2005-01-23
I have many many cookbooks, and this one is by far my favorite. I have made almost every meal in the book and they are almost all fantastic. If you need to spice up your nightly meals with easy tasty recipes, this is the book for you. I'm a working mom without a huge amount of time and coming home to a quick delicious meal is so nice.
Welcome back, appetizers !.......2003-12-24
Many of us fall into the habit of either not making appetizers or making the same appetizers over and over. But with Tod Dimmick's book, that no longer has to be the case. He reminds us that the simple appetizers, as well as the more complex, are within our reach. I was reminded of many of those wonderful combinations - salty prosciutto mixed with cool, slightly sweet melon or rich, creamy blue cheese mixed with pears. Welcome back, appetizers. It's good to see you again.
Exactly what I wanted.......2003-01-28
Tod clearly is no dummy when it comes to making tasty and nutritious meals for a busy family. While I am not a novice in the kitchen, many nights I am not in the mood to make elaborate meals. However, I still desire to have something beyond the basic. Tod's book fits that bill perfectly. Its emphasis on fresh ingredients and influences from many cuisines makes it the perfect book for the sophisticated palate that either lacks the hours or the inclination to spend their time in the kitchen. The layout is easy to comprehend, and the explanations of ingredients, tools and methods for less advanced cooks is concise but thorough. Finally, his categorizations make sense and lend the air of a comprehensive text. Overall a great basic cookbook.
Good food, easy to use.......2003-01-22
My husband gave me this book for Christmas. It was a struggle to pry it out of my sisters-in-law hands when it was time for us to head home from the holidays.
Tod Dimmick writes in an easy-to-read conversational manner about easy-to-make recipes. I cooked veal scallopini for the first time in my life using Tod's recipe. Given the straightforward directions, I whipped up this dish in 13 minutes while my husband threw together a spinach salad and the rolls baked in the oven. The dinner was everything Tod promises: fast, easy and delicious.
I'm looking forward to making many of the other dishes. This book fast becoming a staple in my cookbook collection.

A How To Book.......2007-07-15
I combined several books for both ideas and how to guides. Window Top Treatments is an excellent resource for a nice variety of ideas, many of which are classic window treatments, but the how to instructions are definitely worth the purchase.
To Treatments.......2006-07-28
Very nice book with easy to follow instructions. Great photos. I haven't made anything yet, but I have looked through the book. I can't wait to get started.

Book Description
A spicy biography of the late Virgil Fox (-), who was the most successful and famous organist in history. Prepared by the organists managers for years, the book is based on a -page memoir of Foxs artistic heir and protg, Ted Alan Worth, with contributions by other associates and students who knew Fox intimately.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting book about a very famous organist.......2005-10-11
Based on a memoir by Ted Alan Worth, this is a look at easily the most famous organist since Johann Sebastian Bach.
Worth first met Fox when he played an organ concert at a church in California. Worth was totally blown away by the things Fox did that day; he didn't just play the organ (from memory, which was unheard of in the organ world), he mastered the organ. Is there a word beyond "virtuoso"? That is how good Fox was on the organ. After years of practice, Worth became one of the Fox "group" and became an organist on his own.
During the 1950s and 1960s, Fox was the organist at the Riverside Church in New York City. His gay lover, Richard Weagly, was the Choir Director. The unpleasant end to their relationship was played out in front of everyone. Fox spent a lot of time on tour, playing in churches and concert halls all over America. After each concert, Fox loved spending hours greeting everyone who stood in line to chat or get an autograph. He was a natural showman who wanted people to know who he was, and demanded to be able to be seen by the audience.
It was also the era of pipe organs (before electronics) where each pipe had to be tuned individually. Fox was extremely picky about the sound of whatever organ he was playing, frequently driving organ tuners nuts. In the late 1960s, Fox was asked to resign from the Riverside Church; he had gotten "too big" for the Church.
This book chronicles many ups and downs in Fox's life, both personal and professional. To replace Richard, his lover, Fox brought home a much younger man named David. He was not well liked by the people around Fox, including his manager, and David did little to endear himself to the group. In the late 1970s, Fox entered the hospital for a prostate operation. He was told that the whole tumor was removed, and everything was fine. Fox did nothing about it for a year, only to be told that just half the tumor was removed, and the cancer had spread. He died in October 1980.
This is an excellent, but specialized, book. Anyone who is interested in organ music, or the life of Virgil Fox, should read this book. For everyone else, Fox was a person who enjoyed life to the fullest, and it shows here. It is very much recommended.

Missing The Mark.......2004-05-28
I know the others reviewers liked the book, but I did not. I am a BIG Fox fan and REALLY wanted to like this book. I enjoyed the pictures and some of the reflections from musicians and other friends. However, the book includes unfortunate gossip--statements made in private among friends that Virgil, and any other sane person, would not have expected to be written down for public consumption many years later. There are also some statements about Mr. Fox's private life that I didn't want nor care to know. The book even lapses into bad taste (chapter title using sexual reference, as one example). So much for my great hope that this book would be appropriate to give to young people in order to inspire them. I just do not feels this book honored the life of such a great artist. I truly hope someone out there will write a definitive biography that emphasiez his positive accomplishments!
Extra Saucy please, Honey!.......2003-03-24
A loving, loyal, and often hilarious journey through the phenomenon that was Virgil Fox, "The Dish" lives up to its name from the moment you scan the Table of Contents. "Foam All Over His Face, Raving Like A Madman!", "That Hog-Eye-Stink-Crotch!" and "I've Always Preferred My Organs Upright!" are not at all unusual among the chapter titles as the story of this supremely gifted organist bounces along.
Roughly edited by two of his proteges from the reminisces of a third, "The Dish" is clearly a work springing from true belief in Fox's genius and deep affection for Fox himself. The contrast between the gravitas of his chosen medium, in which he spent years as a church organist in several major national congregations, and the wild joie de vivre and flamboyance with which he embraced the world around him, are a marvelous ride from one extreme to another. I picked up this book on a whim, and was shortly completely unable to detach it from my hands. Fox was such a wild ride himself, and this book is a warm testament not only to the power of belief in oneself, but the devotion of friends even after they've seen their idol's feet of clay (and been charged a dollar for the privilege -- Fox nickeled and dimed his guests for refreshments at his house!).
Delightfully unpretentious, honest and tender, "The Dish" is a mix of high and low culture, tasty and good for you. I am delighted to have learned about the organ community, but even more delighted -- at this safe remove -- to have met Virgil. "Thanks, Honey!"
Loved this book!.......2002-07-31
I loved reading this book and couldn't wait to pick it up a couple times a day! This book really tells the story of the man, good points, bad points, warts and all. You really got the essence of this great master of the organ.
VIRGIL AT LAST.......2002-07-17
"The Dish" is in many ways a sheep in Fox's clothing. This first biography of Virgil Fox is in reality a Ted Alan Worth (Fox's protegee) memoir of his time at the feet of the great organ virtuoso. It could also be described as the world's longest series of anecdotes with a healthy dose of inserted comments by Fox cohorts Richard Torrence, Marshall Yeager and many others As such it cannot be considered a true biography. That aside, it is the only large volume devoted to Fox, so for those interested in his life and loves (musically and otherwise) it is a must read. Worth was 14 when he first met Virgil in what must have been about 1946. The narrative starts at that point, omitting the first 34+ years of Fox's life. Why he learned to love the organ, his rise to prominence and early concert career before World War II are left out. Too bad. It would have been nice to have known the full story of his inspirations. "The Dish" sounds like it was dashed off in one long paragraph, which in fact it was.
I found the stories relating to the organ companies themselves not too technical and full of the competitive spirit. Worth was on the forefront of both the Rodgers and Ruffatti organizations.
The little background, personal stories are a nice People magazine style break from the concertizing minutiae and other more solemn parts of the chapters. Everything from Fox's sex life to his wardrobe are given plenty of amplification. Few stops stay in regarding his personal life. Pictures abound giving faces to the many voices in the text. There are also quite a few variations on the themes of grammar and spelling (lightening for lightning as an example) which detract from the airy prose.
As a non-organist, I came to Fox through his "Heavy Organ" concerts that began in the 1970's. His magical way of introducing "us kids" to J.S. Bach with a pulsating light show behind him cannot be described and of course now cannot be experienced. It's been over 20 years since his death, so those who had the privilege will want to grab on to "Virgil Fox - The Dish" as a pleasant reminder of how great those mind-expanding nights at the theatre were, and how complex was the man who brought organ music to popular culture.

gripping read, at the intersection of personal history and cultural history.......2006-01-11
I stumbled on "Our Father Abe: The Story of a Deaf Shoe Repairman" at the library looking for memoirs and passing the local history display.
It's a gripping read! the authors, Abe's two children, have done an excellent job of storytelling, with a frank and graceful touch.
This is a book poised at the intersection of personal history and cultural history. Abe (born 1900s to Russian Jews) lost his hearing before acquiring language, then went on to experience everything Jews in the 20th c. emigrating from Europe & landing in the midwest went through, but with the challenge of deafness in tow.
This book would be of interest to the Deaf community as much as it is to the Jewish community or to memoir writers like me.
A testament to the personal desire to publish, and the good that can radiate into the world from such a desire.
