Book Description
A thoughtful, sometimes grim, often humerous look at one man's thirty-year span of military service in Germany, Korea, Ireland, Palestine, Malaya and Kenya, with a focus on his experiences in Palestine.
The book details how the author was "press ganged" into the British army, his pride of being a soldier, as well as the heartbreaks and fun times. He also describes his sympathy for the post-1948 Palestine people.

A REMARKABLE STORY -.......2002-12-06
Imagine the thrill I felt when, by accident, I came across Tom Linde's book at amazon.com. I knew Tom when he was in high school and have always wanted to know what happened to him. The reader will find this a story of what a noble man has brought to life. He turned a damaged beginning into a well used life, a life that signifies something: a marvelous story of love, inspiration, courage, and intellect.
Becoming Reacquainted.......2002-02-23
I've known Tom since 1973. The book adds a dimension to our relationship that was missing up to the present. His ability to successfully cope with the devastating "horror" of his circumstance is remarkable. His descriptive articulation of this "horror" is what is very new to me and substantially deepens my value of, respect for, and love of this remarkable man. Tom's debits as a human being are similar to many of us and are neither diminished or aggrandized by his unique circumstance. He is truly human, ornery, cunning, at times devious, and genuine.
THANKS, TOM, FOR YOUR WONDERFUL STORY!
Inspirational..................2002-01-15
I would have to take issue with Dr. Linde's son who says his dad "is an average person, he just works harder at it". He is an extraordinary person who daily faces monumental challenges to live an ordinary life. He demonstrates an iron will and incredible determination in the face of overwhelming obstacles and maintains a beautiful sense of humor throughout.
Dr. Linde possesses a brilliant mind, trapped in a seriously disabled body. He has indeed "worked vigorously to establish a discernible, productive social presence" his entire life, often against great odds. I feel such anger when I read about the lack of accessibility which is afforded him in his own community.
This book answers lots of questions about coping with a serious handicap and is an inspirational journal of Dr. Linde`s life. Praises to his parents and his brother, Dick, who taught him from the beginning that no hurdle was too high and no obstacle to large for him to overcome.
This book possesses humor, culture, education, inspiration - appealing to a broad variety of readers. I highly recommend it!
Great book!.......2002-01-15
I'm lucky enough to know Dr. Linde personally, and he is an amazing person. It was interesting to get to read his book and see life through Tom's eyes; to try and understand what it feels like to suffer from such a horrible disease. Tom has overcome his setbacks and propelled farther than many thought he would ever be able to go. Now, through this book, he can teach all of us.
Read this book. Not only is it a well-written book, but it's important for all "normal" people to try to understand what it may be like to be handicapped. Tom's book does that. It can open your heart and mind.
Highly recommended!.......2002-01-15
I highly recommend this book by Dr. Linde. It gives the reader a very clear understanding of what it is like to live with cerebral palsy. But more than that, this book is applicable to readers in all situations who have personal misfortune to deal with. The courage, humor, and personal strength shown by the author are an inspiration to all readers, regardless of whether they are dealing with personal infirmities. This book is a must read for special education majors, and could be helpful in occupational therapy training as well. Also a good personal interest book for the general population.
Book Description
This revision of my memoir addresses the concerns and mindsets involved in dealing with personal misfortune. In my case, the overriding misfortune is a severe form of Cerebral Palsy. It affects my speech, coordination, and locomotion. The very essence of the book is that these impairments, misfortunes though they may be, do not define me. They do not define who I am, what I believe or what I strive to offer. This book is about more than me. It is about my mom and dad and my immediate family. By their genetic and spiritual energy they gifted me with all that made them special and loving. They gifted me with the knowledge that just to exist on a day to day basis is a misrepresentation of what we must do as members of our family, citizens of our community, and our world. Thus, I learned early on that my disability was always to be controlled and never to be used as an excuse for not being an active player on the world's stage. Does the world have many stages? Certainly. With severe Cerebral Palsy I had to learn how to play my part no matter what the setting on the stage. I worked long and hard to make this book a well-focused account of what I have done and how I have done it. I want it to be an inspiration, a guide, on how to deal with some really awful stuff. I want the reader to discover happily that with a lot of hard work and a little wiggle room most misfortune can be put in its proper place. This is a happy book. I worked to fill it with all the joy of life that my family poured into my soul. In the end I want the reader to discover that, indeed, I am not what I am.

Transforming Trials to Lessons in Life.......2000-01-11
Ronnie Kaye has a marvelous ability to take a potentially devastasting experience and show how to transform it into a stepping stone of life. As both a man and a doctor, I found her book not only enlightening, but touching as well. Besides illuminating for us -- doctors, patients & family --about how to cope with breast cancer, Ronnie Kaye also provides the reader invaluable lessons about humor, unconditional love, and the nature of the indomitable spirit. The reader has the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of a marvelous teacher who speaks from personal experience in leading the reader to their own triumphant life.
A positive tool for dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis.......1999-12-09
Ronnie Kaye has written a wonderful book to help people deal with the emotional issues of a breast cancer diagnosis. It is one of the few that addresses fear of the unknown and the emotional roller coaster that women are on when dealing with breast cancer. When a woman is being treated, her medical team's focus is on the clinical part of saving her life. Emotional issues are rarely addressed or women are told to go find a support group. By using examples of how she has helped women in her own breast cancer support groups, Ronnie clearly defines coping skills that will help women regain some control in their lives and live with the fear. Her book is laced with real life scenarios...the very things that all breast cancer patients face. But she gives us suggestions and ideas on how to live instead of dying. Ronnie has been there. She knows that a devastating diagnosis doesn't mean the end. Instead, she will guide the reader to an understanding of how breast cancer can be an opportunity for growth and fulfillment.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful book, but major thing missing........2007-08-01
This is a beautiful book because of the great recipes and the beautiful pictures. However, there is one major flaw that makes me give this a lower rating. The book, nor the recipes, ever mention the type of machinery that should be used. The only machine that I can think of is the one she's using on the cover. Otherwise, I have no idea what is the correct machine to use for the recipes. If that kind of information was added to the book, this rating would have been a 5-star rating.
Beautiful pictures , useful information.......2007-01-31
Must have specially when you are first starting out in juicing area.
Encourages to try diff recipies by beautiful pictures.
Nice Book.......2007-01-27
I like this book - I wish it had more smoothie recipes, but I suppose any of them could be considered. I like that they explain the purpose of the various ingredients. I also like the pictures as mentioned in other reviews, although I'd prefer to see more recipes. But, I'm very happy to own this, you'd be too. It's great.
The book everyone must have for good health.......2006-08-06
this book is awesome - jucing is wonderful - you feel the natural juices flowing throught out your body. You must change from store bought juice to juicing.
One of the best.......2004-09-26
This is one of the best books i have ever seen on juices! The juices are delicious, and the photograpy and layout makes using the book a lovely experience. I cannot praise this book enough! A great book for anyone... looking for YUMMY juices that are also so good for you.

Book Description
Intarsia refers to the ancient art of wooden mosaics-making pictures in wood. The authors have taken this art form and adapted it for today's woodworker. Using easily available woods and common woodworking tools such as scroll and band saws, the average woodworker can produce beautiful wooden reliefs through step-by-step instruction. The included patterns range from large, majestic portraits and murals to small jewel-like mosaics. Full-color photographs illustrate the beautiful and intricate work possible in the realm of intarsia.
Customer Reviews:
Good start for the Newbie.......2006-03-08
If you are just starting in Intarsia, as am I, this is a good reference to get some knowledge of the art and how to get rolling - or sawing as the case may be. The step-by-step description of a first project gives one more information than some need, but it certainly gives insight to the detail and proceedure required. The patterns included in the book will get you started in fine fashion.
Good, but misleading cover.......2004-02-28
I am just learning the art of intarsia, and this book had some helpful information. However, I was quite disappointed that none of the patterns in the book are for the pieces on the back cover (does and fawn, rearing horse, duck)- only the front cover patterns are included.
Lost in the woods.......2000-08-25
As I became lost in the art of intarsia, this book was my map. Completely unknown to the craft, I purchased this book as a way to beat my summer bordom. As I opened each page, a swirl of thoughts came to me, and I immediately made plans to visit the local hardwood retailer to start my first project. But where to start? This book has the most wonderful design ideas, from beginner to advanced, even I was impressed with the works I had done. You can make each project over and over, because the wood you use is always different. I would recomend this book highly to anyone slightly interested in the art and history and creativity of intarsia.

He has also acted in the Jonathan Demme film The Silence of the Lambs and Bernardo Bertolucci's Little Buddha. PS: Hi BB! Your review was great!
Don't waste your time with this one..........2005-01-25
The first sentence in the first chapter of this book sets the tone for all that comes afterward. Straight away, the author gets his subject's birth date wrong. (For those unfortunate fans who suffered through this painful work of fiction, Chris Isaak was born on JUNE 26, 1956, not in July...)
Wishing not to be so negative as I continued to read, I tried to ignore the spelling and punctuation errors that riddle the book - that could easily be attributed to an inexperienced typesetter... But the errors in fact and history that permeate Mr. Reid's book simply render the entire effort worthless.
His research for this book is sloppy, at best, and he clearly is not at all familiar with Chris Isaak, his music, his fans, or the San Francisco music scene. He gets every aspect of his subject's life incorrect, from his blatantly wrong description of Chris' hometown of Stockton, CA, to his ridiculous assessment of the meaning behind each of Chris' songs. It's obvious, to even the most casual of fans, that this author hasn't a clue about his subject.
There are so many mistakes in this book; I'd need to write a book just to document them... Ridiculous, careless errors, like identifying the actor who won the role in the film "Something Wild" that Chris had been intended to play as "ROY Liotta..." (Again, it's "RAY Liotta...") Very simple to confirm, easy stuff to get right... But no, Reid, perhaps in his haste to release the book, just didn't do enough due diligence... Other errors? Reid's statement (on page 63) that Kenney Dale Johnson and Roly Salley "were judged to be too inexperienced to participate in the final recordings" of Chris' first album "Silvertone." Neither man had joined Chris' band at the time the first record was recorded - something Reid, himself noted earlier on page 57, from an interview with Kenney as he discussed meeting Chris for the first time: "When I first met him, he had most of his first record recorded." Clearly, Reid didn't bother to build a timeline chronicling the events of Chris' life, both major and minor, to see where events intersected or where more information might be needed. His ignorance with regard to the San Francisco Punk scene in the late 1970's, the ashes from which Chris and his new band emerged, is also completely laughable. His statement that The Avengers (the band Jimmy Wilsey formerly played first bass, then guitar for,) did not open the last show for the Sex Pistols at The Mabuhay Gardens... That now legendary show was at Winterland... and that fact took all of 10 minutes to confirm.
For what it's worth, an easy 95% of Reid's information came from Internet sources. (How do I know this? I researched every item listed in the book's bibliography - the vast majority of which came from the "San Francisco Days" site. What's left came from other online sources, and the few books listed in the bibliography are reference books on other topics - like the Leonard Gardner novel, "Fat City," from which Reid apparently culled all his erroneous details about Stockton...) Google "Chris Isaak" and you'll find all the same information the author used to write this book. What's more, you'll probably find that by reading those original articles, you'll gain a much more complete, far less opinionated picture of the guy.
Good coffee-table reading.......2005-01-20
Interesting ,particularly the chapters about his beginnings. I also liked the song by song analysis which puts a new perspective on some songs. However, the author never mentions the numerous single-only/bonus tracks, which is a shame as many of them are easily as good as the album tracks (So lovely is the night, partly sung in Japanese is a gem among others)There are also some factual mistakes,Link Wray's Rumble is credited to Duane Eddy and Only the lonely by Sinatra is NOT the Orbison song.A list of the covers played live over the past 20 years would have been welcome as well. So,a very good introduction to Chris Isaak's world and music but a bit light for the long-time fan.

Customer Reviews:
Tremendous reference book.......2003-10-23
As someone who has collected edged weapons, medals, and sundry militaria, this ranks as one of the best reference books that I have come across. The images are fantastic, and the text is well-written to boot! The author describes the history of the blood chit and documents the chits used by the Allies during WW2. A very good resource for the collector and an interesting coffee table book for those who aren't militaria collectors at heart.
EXCELLENT MONOGRAPH.......2003-05-07
Lost Hope is an excellent account of the history, development and vagrancies of the different aviation survival chits used by the allied air forces during World War Two. The book is exceptionally well written and jammed full of factual information, aviation accounts, chit construction materials, chit styles, stamps and issue numbers. The colour photographs are superb with very high detail. There is a lot of information as well as photographs. If you are a collector of chits, or are interested in their development and history, then this book is a definitive account. I highly recommend this book.
The Definitive Chit Book.......2000-04-07
Mr. Baldwin is by far the most knowledgable authority when it comes to Blood Chits and Escape and Evasion kits.
More than just a great reference "Last Hope" is a must have for collectors of Blood Chits and other WWII CBI militaria.
Wish there were more books out about this subject.

Book Description
One Blood traces both the life of the famous black surgeon and blood plasma pioneer Dr. Charles Drew and the well-known legend about his death. On April 1, 1950, Drew died after an auto accident in rural North Carolina. Within hours, rumors spread: the man who helped create the first American Red Cross blood bank had bled to death because a whites-only hospital refused to treat him. Drew was in fact treated in the emergency room of the small, segregated Alamance General Hospital. Two white surgeons worked hard to save him, but he died after about an hour. In her compelling chronicle of Drew's life and death, Spencie Love shows that in a generic sense, the Drew legend is true: throughout the segregated era, African Americans were turned away at hospital doors, either because the hospitals were whites-only or because the 'black beds' were full. Love describes the fate of a young black World War II veteran who died after being turned away from Duke Hospital following an auto accident that occurred in the same year and the same county as Drew's. African Americans are shown to have figuratively 'bled to death' at white hands from the time they were first brought to this country as slaves. By preserving their own stories, Love says, they have proven the enduring value of oral history.
Customer Reviews:
Great insight into Dr. Drew and the "refused treatment" controversy...........2007-05-17
This is an excellent story on both Charles Drew and the power of myth in the African American community. I too grew up on the story of Charles Drew being refused treatment at a segregated hospital. Given the history of African Americans and the medical establishment, this was easy to believe, especially by those living under the oppressiveness of Jim Crow. For example, the sad story of WW II veteran Maltheus Avery being turned away by Duke University Hospital shows us why the Dr. Drew hospitalization refusal story took on a life of its own.
The book also gave me some additional insight into just who Dr. Drew was as a man and as a physician. He truly was an outstanding man who exemplified manhood, scholarship, perseverance, and uplift. If I'm not mistaken, there is no comprehensive biography of Dr. Drew that has been written outside of the dozens of children's books about him. That's very surprising to me, given his accomplishments and his legendary status in medical circles and in the African American community.
I applaud Ms. Love for writing a truly fascinating story that needed to be told, both of Dr. Drew and the stories that surrounded his death. This is non-fiction writing at its best.
Performs a needed service.......2004-03-22
Too often, what passes as "Black History" to the public on radio shows, the internet, etc. consists of myths and conspiracy theories as the "Willie Lynch Letter," The first president being Black, African-Americans being descended from Ancient Egyptians, ad nauseum. Spencie Love performs a well-needed service by debunking one of the most common (albeit one of the more plausible) of these myths-the idea that Black blood plasma pioneer Dr. Charles Drew bled to death because he was refused admission to a segregated hospital. Fact was, as she carefully demonstrates, this actually happened to another Black person named Maltheus Avery around the same time while Dr. Drew was treated responsibly at the time of this death.
As a Black scholar, I have long decried the use of fabrication in the telling of Black history as something a people starved for true knowledge could ill-afford. Thank you Miss Love for showing people that REAL history does matter.
Someone at Amazon Needs to Check The Ingram Review Here!!!.......2003-07-23
I decided to look up the Amazon site for Spencie Love's book "One Blood," because I recently wrote a review of Phillip Roth's "The Human Stain, where I point out the erroneous information provided by a character about the death of Dr. Charles Drew. The character claimed that Drew bled to death because he was refused admission to a Caucasian hospital due to his race. Lo and behold I look up this Amazon site and read the Ingram review of "One Blood," only to discover that it too, has erroneous information. The review claims that Drew was refused admission to one hospital, then treated in the emergency room of a segregated hospital, after which he bled to death. Apparently, the reviewer didn't read Love's book either. That's not what she describes as happening. Drew was IMMEDIATELY admitted to the emergency room of Allamance County Hospital in Allamance County, North Carolina, where doctors couldn't save him because he was entirely too injured to be saved. Love makes this VERY CLEAR in the book. The Ingram review implies that first Drew was taken to one hospital and refused admission, then taken to a "segregated" facility where he was treated, but couldn't be saved. No!!! This is not what Love says happened. In the book she describes how it was JUST ONE HOSPITAL ALL ALONG where Drew was taken and treated. Part of the point of her book is to correct the long held fallacy that Drew bled to death due to the refusal of a hospital to admit him. Please someone at Amazon, GET THE BOOK. Then read what she wrote. Then post my review of Roth's novel, where I express my dismay that Roth got away with furthering a myth that is still well entrenched among those who should research such matters before commenting about them (or having characters comment about them).
Readable history.......1999-02-10
This wonderful book not only includes accurate, scholarly historical research, it tells a gripping story of two fine black families and their experience with health care for African-Americans in our society. Very readable.
A magical synthesis of African American history and myth........1998-12-27
Spencie Love has written one of the few genuinely biracial explorations of the history of black-white relations in the United States. She uses the story of Charles Drew to illustrate the ways in which white Americans have misunderstood and distorted the contributions of black Americans to their shared culture--whether science, politics, education, medicine, or daily life. THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW called this a "superb book" and their review was spot on.

UNBIASED, BRILLIANT, UNIVERSALLY APPLICABLE.......2005-05-19
My father, a survivor of the death camps (Auschwitz, Buchenwald), proclaimed this biography as the most accurate he has read. Having read countless stories, my father found Pisar's portrayal of not only what happened in the camps, but their effect on survivors both during and after the war as honest and true reflections of his experience.
Although portions of the subject matter (Soviet Union) are now outdated, the political discussion, and underlying philosophies remain as applicable as ever in the dynamic of 2005.
Some books should never go out of print.
A Must Read.......2003-07-14
"The story that Anne Frank might have written if she had lived", wrote Philadelphia Inquirer when this book was published.
One of the youngest survivors of Auschwitz death camp, world-renowned international lawyer Samuel Pisar talks in this book about the tragedies and historic events that he witnessed himself: Second World War, Holocaust and nuclear arm race between USA and the Soviet Union. This book was written around 1979. However, the tragic events of September 11, 2001 make this book as timely as ever. I highly recommend this book.

Too bad this book is out of print.......2000-09-30
I was listening to a radio interview with Samuel Pisar in the very early 1980's. He was a very impressive individual who had quite a story to tell about himself. From growing up as a young boy in Poland in a upper middle class family, to losing all his loved ones and surviving by his wits in the death camps in Nazi Europe and rebuilding his broken life to become an international lawyer whose influence was greatly felt in the 60's and 70's.
The first two thirds of this book is autobiographical and emotional reading. I could tell Pisar had to revisit past demons to cleanse his soul for himself and his family. It is compelling reading.
The final third addresses American/Soviet relations which does not have as much meaning today, but still offers an insight to preglasnost USSR and how one very smart man was looking at our world.
I strongly recommend this book if you can find it.

Poems of Ireland and solstice.......2002-03-20
There are wonderful images in these poems, images of cold and light and winter. But my favorite of all was "Athena at Taffee's Bar". Here's a small quote: "I unfold like an eaglet from a white shell half its size. I let my war cry clatter the bottles on the shelf." Here's another quote from a Christmas poem: "The solstice moon rides within a ring of ice gleaming blue silver, blood silver, silver mist silver. The snow is blue; cobalt silver on the moon-struck mountain."
