A good book, very thorough and without a doubt the best one to buy if you happen to be able to relax by looking at pictures of other people relaxing. Great enormous glossy photographs of happy, attractive adults and cute babies. Neat bits about massage from other cultures. Lots of fun little details, but little real reason to separate out chapters as the author does. But no matter; the book is great to read and might actually teach you something about massage.
Disorganized, lacks sensuality, hard for the beginner.......2002-06-27
Ms. Hudson can't resist the temptation to throw in dozens of obscure massage practices from her extensive travels. The result is needlessly complex and snobby. If you are willing to make the effort you will learn something here and there, although some of the techniques are quite difficult. I'm not convinced that even Hudson knows how to do them. To sum up, this would mainly interest a massage fanatic. It's hardly an "ultimate" book on the subject. In the end, I returned my copy.
Wonderful for the whole family.......2002-06-19
This book is excellent for families. From intimate couples massage, to pregnancy, labor, and infant massage, it takes you through all the stages of family life. I have given this book in a bridal shower basket with oil and candles with great comments, especially when their first child was born a few years later. Wonderful details and vivid photos.
Excellent Guide!.......2002-03-25
If you are looking for a good massage book, you should buy this one. It's an excellent guide, the photographs are really helpful and it helps you transmit "good vibrations" using the massage. It's a very complete guide with information about Thai, Shiatsu, Reflexology, Chinese, Indian and Swedish Massage. Very helpful for beginners!

The success of its book lies in the illustrated (color photographs), step-by-step instructions in executing each massage technique. These photographs, combined with the instructions of the author, can help even the unfamiliar accomplish each technique with great ease. Various massage methods from the East and West are also incorporated in this book. There are also insights in aromatherapy. This book is totally a major reference material in the art of massage. In fact, it may just be all that you need. A wonderfully excellent read.

My recipe-- Caution--- Disclaimer.......2003-10-24
Ok, my recipe is in this book, but I have never made it from the measurements listed. It would probaly make 40 pounds of noodles anyway. On the lot I just kinda put things togther without measuring (My bus did not have room for measuring cups anyway) But this book is fun!!! Elizabeth wrote this with a lot of love. I would still be out there cooking for everyone if I could. So much love for one lifetime!!! Thanks Jerry!!!

"Cooking With the Dead" is full of fabulous pictures and interviews with Deadheads and some great recipes. I was kind of disappointed that there were recipes for beef kabobs and tuna melts in what I had thought would be a vegetarian cookbook, but I overlooked them. 3 Bean Veggie Chilli is a tasty dish I have enjoyed making. The Gilly Melt is quite tasty, and I am very intrigued by "Wheel-of-Creation-Vegan-Organic-No-Electricity-Sprouted-Wheat-Berry Pizza", I long for a wheat grass grinder. The Energy Nuggets are really great as are the Apple space cakes. Its a fun cookbook, and memoir of a people.
Simple vegetarian recipes and fun to read!.......2000-08-29
I bought this cookbook while on vacation in the north woods; lots of the recipes were perfect for cooking in the tiny cottage kitchen and on the grill...but I had to wait until I got back to my local organic co-op for a lot of other frequently-used ingredients like tahini, tamari, nori, and rice wine vinegar.
The best part for me is that this is the only cookbook that ever caught my husband's interest and inspired him to do any kind of cooking that didn't involve a box of mac and cheese and the microwave! Since I bought this book he's made three kinds of burritos for dinner!
How many ways can you make grilled cheese?.......1999-12-27
While I love the Grateful Dead and had many great times in the lots eating and partying, I was a little disappointed in this book. It oversimplifies the variety of people in the lots and the food offered. But, for nostalgia's sake, I have to say that I read it a number of times and got a lttle teary looking at the pictures. If anything, buy it to support a fellow Deadhead and get a few good recipes in the meantime.

I prepare the black bean burrito recipe often, and it's a family favorite. There are many other nice recipes as well. The stories are also interesting, especially when one considers that the GD touring lifestyle is pretty much over.

Fascinating read.......2007-03-16
I rate Evan Imber Black highly, having participated in a professional seminar she presented to. I ordered the book to learn more. I wasn't disappointed by the book in any way. I found it easy to read, thought-provoking, moving, and informative. It is full of illustrative case studies and has questions and exercises for the reader to use at looking at the role of ritual in your life. You can read the book without completing the exercises though. I'm going to keep it as a personal reference book when issues arise for me around ritual.

Julian Budden, one of the world's foremost scholars of Italian opera and author of a monumental three-volume study of Verdi's works, now offers music lovers a major new biography of one of the giants of Italian opera, Giacomo Puccini. Blending astute musical analysis with a colorful account of Puccini's life, here is an illuminating look at some of the most popular operas in the repertoire, including Manon Lescaut, La Boheme, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, and Turandot. Budden provides an illuminating look at the process of putting an opera together, the cut-and-slash of nineteenth-century Italian opera--the struggle to find the right performers for the debut of La Boheme, Puccini's anxiety about completing Turandot (he in fact died of cancer before he did so), his animosity toward his rival Leoncavallo (whom he called Leonasino or "lion-ass"). Budden provides an informative analysis of the operas themselves, examining the music act by act. An excellent Musical Bio........2006-04-01
Having read nearly all of the books on Puccini, I feel at least competent to evaluate them. The one that moved Puccini to the level of "worth a book" was Mosco Carner's 1959 book, Puccini, a Critical Biography. The information given was fairly accurate for what was known then. The main fault was the continuing"character analyisis" of the composer. In the 60's Wm. Ashbrook wrote a book on the operas. It too is accurate in presenting many new and interesting facts as well as fasitnating interpretations.In addition it is very well written. Since then there have been a number of other books on the composer and his operas. Of the latest two; Budden and Matz, I must choose Budden. Before discussing Budden's merits, I should say that Matz's book is an excellent chronicle of Puccini's life and filled with anecdotes and interesting facts.It is an entertaining read. The basic problem,for me, is it pretty well leaves the music alone. While Puccini's life is certainly interesting, his music is what is most important, at least for me. Budden's book does a fine job of combining Puccini's life and discussing the music. He writes most effectively about the operas. Their creation struggles. Their multipule revisions. The facts are accurate and presented clearly. He writes with a clarity about music that is both refreshing and rare. There is one other book on Puccini I would like to mention and that is a very expensive one [why??] published by Chicago University and written by Michael Girardi. It presents a most original view of the operas but it is not easy to read. It is stimulating. I hope this helps you decide.

From someone who visited Auschwitz.......2005-01-28
I read this book while I was living in Poland, before visiting Auschwitz. I highly recommend it as it provides an interesting glimpse into the minds of the men who ran the camp. The most interesting account is that of Dr Kremer, one of the most instrumental figures in the exterminations. His account is in the form of a diary, where the news of extermination is side by side with more mundane things like the purchase of new buttons for a coat or the consumption of roast beef for dinner. A thoroughly interesting and excellent book.
A different perspective.......2003-10-09
I actually bought this book while at Auschwitz. It was recommended by our tour guide-one Stanislaw Macksaw-who was a Polish survivor of a German work camp and who lost relatives to both the Germans and the Russians. The book recounts the various perspectives of three SS camp workers; a repentant guard, an unrepentant doctor and the fairly straightforward account of the camp commandant while he was awaiting execution, who looks to neither repent or gloat but to leave a record of his actions for history to judge. Different motives drove each to write his particular section and each gives the reader some insight into the mind of the Allegemeine SS. The camp commandant's piece reads like a bureaucrat's account of his seemingly mundane job, leaving the reader with little insight into the evil which was served. The guard seeks to expiate some of his guilt for the crimes which he was a part of, while the doctor revels in the wickedness of which he was a part without acknowledging any guilt. A good book for those with an interest in the Holocaust or World War II history.
