Customer Reviews:
This book was awesome...........2003-12-30
I read this book for the first time when I was about 8(I found it in my parent's bedroom and snuck and read it under my bed and in the laundry room).
Feinberg was such a superb writer, bravely tackling the issue of AIDS and introducing it to the public from a first person kind of view. I was saddened that I didn't get a chance to read his work until 5 years after his death. This novel was ironicly hilarious, devastating and powerful. A work of pure genius.
Thank God it's not me..........2000-08-06
If Silence=Death, then David Feinberg would still be here forcing us to look at what life was/is for those suffering with AIDS. He's the traffic accident you can't help but look at as he forces us to laugh at what is by definintion, not funny. He's the bad joke at a funeral, the one we are all grateful for but would never own. RIP, David... MJ.
FANTASTIC!!!!.......1999-09-15
Mr. Feinberg's words are spectacular. The reader is certainly transported to another time and place . Sometimes the place isn't where one wants to be, however, one learns how a person copes with living with HIV.
I laughed, cried and worried throughout. I believe this book is good for anyone to read and I highly recommend it to anyone who doesn't have a clue about HIV.
Enjoy!!
Banal, hyperbolic and, in the end, tedious.......1999-07-03
I found this book remaindered and, seduced by the breathless reviews on the back, decided to give it a try. It may be bad form to criticize this last book by a writer who succumbed to the very disease around which the subject matter revolves, but I'm afraid that's what one must do to be honest.
It's surprising that someone of such obvious intelligence could write a book that epitomizes Fran Lebowitz's remark that one should not detain a fleeting insight. Most of the essays cry out for the patient pen of a competent copy editor, and there is very little here that hasn't been said with more grace, insight and craft elsewhere. Fans of Feinberg's novels will no doubt want to investigate this, but the self-indulgent prose and pretense to outrageousness will probably get old fast for almost all other readers.
This is the real thing.......1999-06-25
Feinberg says in this book that he wants to reach age 40 and write 5 books. It's our great loss that he didn't get to do either but at least we have 2 novels and this. I'd say that if you're going to read anything that's real about AIDS, read this.

Customer Reviews:
Any of Bruce Canfield's books are worth reading!.......2007-02-04
Bruce Canfield's books are always worthwhile reading for the interested student of history: he always explains the development and technical details of the firearm under review within its historical context, never slacking in detail yet somehow never getting bogged down in minutiae.
If you don't already have _War Baby_ and are interested in the M1 Carbine, this is a worthwhile book; if you already own _WB_ or are planning on getting it and are uninterested in the M1 Garand rifle, you would be better off saving your money & spending it on _War Baby_, which focuses exclusively on the M1 Carbine. I have read _War Baby_ and found the section on the Carbine in Canfield's book to be (understandably) inadequate in comparison, but wholly enjoyable and complete in its own right if not already familiar with the extensive and absolutely thorough coverage provided on the subject by _War Baby_.
Any fan of the Garand rifle is well-served by adding this title to his personal library. That said: I really wish that this title was offered as part of a compendium with Bruce Canfield's _Johnson Rifle_, as that other book is rather pricey in comparison; if the two were combined at the present price of his book on the Johnson rifle, it would be a no-brainer to buy it, offering as it would a fairly comprehensive look at the long arms developed and used by the U.S. immediately prior & during World War II. Something the publisher should consider, as I imagine sales of the book on the Johnson rifle are handicapped by it's high price, while this book is not as thorough as others devoted exclusively to their single topical long arm and hence could benefit from the addition of the added material on the Johnson rifle which competed with the Garand for political favor...
Guide book.......2007-01-10
Although I am not finished reading this book, I am very pleased with the content so far. This book goes into very good detail with good quality pictures. I was looking for a book to assist me in the purchase of an M1, and I feel more comfortable in my quest now that I am much more educated on the specifics of differant models and details purtaining to certain years and serial numbers as pointed out in this book. The content may be a little to detail oriented for the reader that is just trying to gain the history of this weapon, but for the reader looking to learn the "nuts and bolts" of this gun, I would highly recommend this guide.
Incomplete and dry.......2004-05-10
As a collector of U.S. military rifles, I decided
to purchase this book. I found the carbine information
helpful, if a little confusing, and incomplete in
regard to some of the later developments, and there
is NOTHING in here at all helpful about ammo.
I have ALL the M1 books, though. And this area
is where Canfield sort of falls apart and becomes
irrelevant. He completely poo-poohs the Italian
Breda and Beretta rifles, does not explore the
rebuilds or much of the postwar history, does not
mention civilian developments at all, and
badmouths the "import rifles"...which pretty much
means what today's shooters and collectors can
actually get is skipped COMPLETELY.
And a lot of the photos, while pretty good, are not
completely explained. In point of fact, there is
some good material here, but not much of it, and
it is all incomplete.
Collectors Must Have Book.......2000-01-18
I found this book to be just what I was looking for in a Reference/History book. Bruce Canfield must have had the average military collector in mind when he wrote this work. He has updated the original text and the clarity of the pictures is excellent. It has helped answer some of the questions that I had about my M1 Garand. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR COLLECTORS.
Excellent reference book.......1999-06-10
If you own an M1 or are thinking of buying an M1 either Garand style or a carbine you NEED this book. As a collector of military rifles this book paid for itself the first weekend I had it. A must have for U.S. military weapons collectors.
Product Description

If you collect or are interested in the Garand rifle, this is written for you. Easy to follow and packed with facts and pictures. I refer to my copy regularly. I would buy it again.
COMPLETE M1 GARAND.......2006-11-10
JUST THE THING FOR OLD GUYS TO USE WHEN TAKING APART A GARAND & PUTTING

Necessary Part of You Library.......2004-02-19
"Garanditus" is a dreadful malady, contracted by the unsuspecting interested in either shooting or World War II collecting. The consequences are terrible: drained financial resources, incessant internet searches for M1s, parts, and attendant paraphernalia. You find yourself attending meetings, standing, and reciting the familiar phrase, "Hello, my name is B--- and I am a Garandoholic."
Along the way, to really appreciate this hobby (whether shooting or collecting), it is required that you build up a library and along side of Duff, Canfield, and the others are the books by Jim Thompson. None of the books written by *any* authors, by themselves, will provide a complete and total compendium of knowledge about Mr. J. C. Garand's wonderful rifle. All of them do provide essential information, making the practitioner more appreciative of the M1.
Some of the other reviewers have objected to Mr. Thompson's rants about gang bangers, the criminal element, gun confiscation, Arizona local government, etc. are a bit tiresome. I do not share that view. On the contrary, I found Mr. Duff's books to be chocked full of facts and history, but a bit dry and too much a relation of the history of the Springfield armory. Consequently, Mr. Thompson's opinions provided interesting counterpoint. I value *both* the books that I have by Duff and Thompson as valuable components in a necessary reference library.
To be sure, Mr. Thompson does provide a great deal of his personal knowledge to his works and does so in a very literate manner. I mean, a gun book whose author uses the words "calumny" and "denouement"?
The only reason I gave it a 4 is because I wish it were longer.
Classic guns, written a classic style........2002-02-15
From the introductory pages, through to the list of resources, "The Classic M1 Garand" held my complete interest. Beginning with Jim Thompson's moving dedication to his friend, this book is written straight from the heart.
As a newcomer to the world of classic rifles and firearms,a female neophyte, I was happily surprised that the information within was compiled in an efficient way. The descriptions of various types of guns and their proper care and preservation, is explained in finite detail. Mr. Thompson leaves no stone unturned covering the past 60or so years in the life of this beautiful treasure. The accompanying photographs of the author field testing his rifles, and photos of various guns and accessories are well described and captioned.
War (and Peace) stories are spun through tbe context of the book.I love Jim Thompson's personalized style of writing, I seemed to flow with him from one chapter to the next eager to learn more. Definately an excellent choice for the gun collector and the merely curious as well. I highly recommend it. Thank You.
Complete?.......2001-12-16
Thompson's M1 work is not complete without his latest book, THE CLASSIC M1 GARAND... But the two are a formidable and exciting package. His insightful handling of issues and clever debunking of a lot of widely-held bogus conspiracy theories is as sharp as his examination of the anti-gun lobby, and his new tome gives some insight into what the man is about. He also sheds some light on peripheral but all-important American issues, which seem to totally elude most firearms writers. The first three chapters are particularly enlightening... His new "Great Guns" books, out about 2002-2003, promise to be entertaining and enlightening, just like these two missives. Thompson explores threads others can't even find, and presents rather dry technical material--essential to his kind of work--in a manner which can make even the clumsiest oaf laugh from time to time.
Book Description
The only book devoted completely to slicing today's ropes, this fully illustrated, step-by-step guide has been expanded and enhanced in this new edition and now covers wire splices, and splices in Spectra and Kevlar ropes as well as Dacron braid and traditional three-strand. The Splicing Handbook includes every splice project a boater will ever need.
Customer Reviews:
Review of "The Splicing Handbook" 2nd Ed by B. Merry.......2006-02-28
I bought the book because I wanted to splice high-tech yacht rope, especially the 12-strand braids like Amsteel. This review pertains only to splices related to such rope.
The photos are not always of the splice being described (p.84). The illustrations appear to have been cropped to fit the page, which is especially confusing for complex splices (p.88). The hollow braid splice on p.83 results in a weak splice with a bump at a vulnerable location - I believe this is a dangerous splice and that the authors have failed to grasp the workings of the Chinese Finger Puzzle principle mentioned in several places.
Conclusion: don't waste your money. Go to the web sites for Yale, Sampson, and New England Rope to get better illustrations and text for free. Also, study the test results from Layline.com on the importance of tapering the buried eye splice tail.
A good book.......2004-01-09
This is a good and inexpensive book. You'll find a lot of information about splicing, perhaps more than you will ever need.
The problem with a book is that you have to understand how the strands -- and which strands -- lie up next to each other. It's not that easy to figure out the first time around. I learned how by watching my Dad. That gave me an idea how splices are made.
Consider Amazon's software on splicing; ISBN 0970971419 if you just want to learn common splices. It's a software program for beginners to do the basic splices in front of a computer. It's more expensive, though.
The Best Damn Book in the World(about ropes anyway).......2002-07-18
Barbra Merry is a good friend of mine. Shes the one who got me started on ropes and knots and splicing etc... Anyway I have had a chance to skim through her book and read parts and excerpts from her book and it is really good. I've only known Barbra a few months but shes a really nice lady and if you ever have the chance to meet her make sure you make friends because shes the nicest lady you'll ever meet in your life. And if you ever have the chance to tie knots or learn how to splice or learn new knots I urge you to learn it because it is a great hobby and loads of fun. Thats my review about her book but its probably a review about the author.

Perfect reference book for professional splicers!.......2002-06-17
The Splicing Handbook is simply one of the best reference works for the working rope splicer and professional rigger. Barbara Merry has provided an excellent book to review rusty skills, to learn a new splice, and as a convenient compendium of splice history to settle any shipyard, boatyard, or construction site argument on how to splice a specific configuration of rope. Ms. Merry is held in high esteem for producing a book on the most difficult technique of rope work - making a proper end termination! Good for her!!
How to splice all sorts of line........1998-02-06
Brief, clear descriptions of how to splice all kinds of traditional and modern line -- braided, plaited, the works. If you're interested in splicing, this is an inexpensive way to cover a lot of ground. Good illustrations.
Book Description
A powerful tool for all parents needing to learn about themselves as well as their relationships with their children. This book offers a very honest opportunity for parents to evaluate what they want for their children and families, as well as how to deal with the conflicts and day- to-day problems of being an effective parent.
Customer Reviews:
If you really love your children, read this book.......2005-01-07
This book uses the same framework as their couples relationship book, "Do I Have to Give Up Being Me to Be Loved By You?" but applies it to the relationship between parents and children. It is an awesome tool for parents struggling with problems in communicating with their children. Basically, the idea is that instead of thinking "If you really loved me, you (the child) would behave in such and such a way", we should change our focus. Instead, when we act from an intention to understand, an intention that will tend to bring people closer together, the question to ask oneself is actually "If I (the parent) really loved you (the child) I would....." This perspective allows the parent to focus on what s/he can understand or do or change, and from personal experience it works. Jordan and Margaret Paul have described a blueprint that we can use to improve our understanding of our children. It is a system that works to convey to our children that we do, in fact, love them. It is a gift to parents.

Wreckless Eric pens a Big Smash!.......2004-09-17
Man,talk about outta nowhere...
This autobiography/memoir from "Wreckless Eric" Goulden is a must-read for anyone who recalls the glory days of punk/new wave and the DIY (do it yourself) sound of Stiff records.
Goulden begins by taking the reader through his underdog upbringing in the British school system, tenement homelife, and wonderfully discreptive dead-end jobs(you can almost smell a few of them).
Goulden eventually stumbles into a series of pub bands which leads to a demo which leads to a record deal on Stiff Records. Stiff played a major role in the early days of punk, and almost everyone associated with the label went on to greatness (Nick Lowe,Elvis Costello,Ian Dury to name a few).
Eric's recollection of those days are captured well here, which is worth the price of the book itself. The coming's and going's at Stiff, the low budget/grimy/cheapness of the whole operation, is well writ. About time somebody got it down (Thanks,Eric!).
The usual "trappings of fame" also make their appearance here, mainly alcoholism, which Goulden has beat.
Goulden tells a good story here, and he tells it well. I'd put it up there with Jon Savage's epic "England's Dreaming" simply because it captures the mood of England in the mid to late 70's so well.
Hopefully, the Wreckless Eric catalog will get a past due re-issue,at least here in the States, where his work is difficult to find.
