Product Description
To write the true story of three monthsÂ’ work in a hospital is a task before which the boldest man might quail. Let my very dear friends of the Belgian Field Hospital breathe again, for I have attempted nothing of the sort.
Download Description
The life of a hospital at the front is a curious mixture of excitement and dullness. One week cases will be pouring in, the operating theatre will be working day and night, and everyone will have to do their utmost to keep abreast of the rush; next week there will be nothing to do, and everyone will mope about the building, and wonder why they were ever so foolish as to embark on such a futile undertaking. For it is all emergency work, and there is none of the dull routine of the ordinary hospital waiting list, which we are always trying to clear off, but which is in reality the backbone of the hospital's work.

Book Description
Part inspirational cancer-survival story, part memoir-as-laugh-riot, CANCER SCHMANCER picks up where Fran's last book, Enter Whining, left off. After the publication of that book, Fran's life launched into a downward spiral. She separated from a long and complicated relationship, her TV series started to slip in the ratings, and her beloved dog Chester Drescher's health was in major decline. Then came the mysterious symptoms no doctor could adequately explain. With her trademark humor, Fran tells of her indefatigable search for answers and the cancer diagnosis that she ultimately beat. But not before a gold mine of humorous insights were revealed to her about what really matters most in life.

Part inspirational cancer-survival story, part memoir-as-laugh-riot, Cancer Schmancer picks up where Enter Whining left off. After the publication of the New York Times bestseller, Fran found herself in an intense downward spiral. She was dealing with a separation from a long and complicated relationship; her TV series was facing declining ratings; and even her beloved dog, Chester Drescher, was failing fast! All this, compounded by symptoms no one could adequately explain, began a dark cycle that ironically, yielded a goldmine of humorous insights into what really matters. Today, Fran's got her health and she can say, truthfully, that good came out of the bad. It was a ride she needed to take, and from it, she offers lessons about: * Accepting the hand life deals you * Tests that can save your life * Fears and relationship follies * Turning negatives into positives * Guilt, feh! * Recovery and picking up the pieces And more!

Cancer Schmancer.......2007-07-27
I had just been diagnosed with endometrial cancer when a friend mentioned that Fran Drescher had a book out about her experience. I'm not a 'celebrity' follower at all but i just wanted to hear a non-medical run through of what to expect. Which was very much in line with what she wrote...the frustration of not being heard when you know something isn't right and trying to find someone who listens and checks it all out just to make sure..and when you finally get the diagnosis....going through what you have to deal with in your own head and everyone elses...she was up front and open about the whole process and very fortunate that it hadn't spread....and that she had the money for good insurance and a good support system....so many in this country don't.
GOOD GOOD BOOK!!.......2007-04-30
It was very interesting, I could not put it down!! I just love Fran! This is an educational and funny read!
Cancer Schmancer a hit.......2007-03-25
Very helpful to women. Whether they have been diagnosed with uterine cancer or not, all women should treat themselves to this book so that should the time come when they experience the symptoms Fran had or know someone who has, they will be educated. And a word of caution: EVEN IF a D & C shows no cancer cells, you STILL can have uterine cancer. I know firsthand of someone who did. The cancer was hidden in the muscle of the uterus, Stage 1-C, undetectable by a D & C. If symptoms persist, a good doctor will recommend a hysterectomy. Don't settle for a "wait & see" attitude. The doc of the person I know said he had not had a case like my friend's in his entire career & made the right decision by recommending a total hysterectomy.
All M.D.'s should read it!.......2007-03-15
A sad commentary on one of the areas of medicine in the United States. It deals with OBGYN and women health. It demonstrated the inadequacy of the OBGYN specialty in dealing with the reproductive-endocrine system of the female. It exemplifies the difficulty for a surgical specialty to deal with a nonsurgical disturbances of an organ systems (reproductive) in the female and the tragedy that results from this inadequacy. The author describes the consequences of almpost "comical proportions" when the various other specialists, outside of OBGYN, attempt to take over and correct the problems. A funy, through tears, look at the the tragedy and the role of the OBGYN specialty in it.
Wonderful Frank Memoir from a Charming TV Star.......2006-12-30
As you'd guess from the title, this 2003 memoir is not as light-hearted as Fran's 1995 book, Enter Whining, and perhaps it whitewashes the reasons for her divorce from her long-time partner. But it's just as good a read and probably more honest. I wish I'd had this book to give my best friend who suffered from a cancer similar to Fran Drescher's uterine cancer. This star is so generous in describing how she discovered and dealt with her serious cancer, it's remarkable. The book is informative, often amusing, always interesting and in the end, poignant. If I met Fran, I'd tell her in person that she probably made the right decision about radiation -- the side effects for treating can be horrific and disabling for a lifetime.

Everyone Loves This Book.......2006-08-24
My Mom has now bought three copies of this book and my sisters keep taking them. This book has the best dessert recipies of any collection I have come across. They are easy and delicious. The photos are also quite beautiful. They make everything look so good, but this is a "country" dessert book- not full of fancy stuff. There is also a section of desserts for children. I highly recommend the Pear Tart with Raspberry Glaze.
Lee Bailey's Country Desserts.......2005-04-08
I started to cook late in life and found this wonderful cookbook. I figured I'd start making cookies first - make my mistakes and gradually "move up" to cakes, breads, then on to dinner meals. I found the dessert recipes in this book - easy to read, easy to follow and most of all easy to make. The pictures really helped as well. My coworkers (my experimental ginea pigs) actually enjoyed my desserts and now I boast the best lemon bars in town! Thanks to Lee Bailey's great collective recipes. Although I scored it pretty high for being a novice cook -- I still get plenty of requests at family and business functions to make certain desserts from this cookbook so it is a well deserved rating!

Buckling under the weight of 120 delicious recipes and a wealth of lavish, full-color photographs, Lee Bailey's Country Desserts is as big in size as it is on taste. Inspired by the warming and satisfying desserts of his childhood, Bailey devotes an entire cookbook to these lovely puddings, cakes, cookies, and custards, and indulges us with recipes borrowed from family and friends. Here is his grandmother's favorite Peppermint Candy Ice Cream, his Aunt Cora's Banana Layer Cake, and Aunt Freddie's Graham Cracker Pickups. And, happily, creating these fabulous desserts doesn't call for gimmicky kitchen tools, gadgets, or fancy, cordon bleu ingredients, either. Bailey cooks the old-fashioned way--requiring elbow grease for mixing, lots of butter for greasing the pan, and no low-fat or no-fat substitutions. His desserts are heavy on flour, egg whites, sugar, and butter--but definitely not low on taste. His Blackberry Cobbler is a dream come true--oozing with the exquisite taste of six cups of fresh blackberries and topped with homemade ice cream, whipped cream, or perhaps a dash of custard. And who can resist his easy-to-make Honey Custard--which bakes in just 40 minutes?
Bailey divides his recipes up into distinct chapters for quick-and-easy reference--from ice cream and ices to kids' desserts, with cakes, cobblers, cookies, and other goodies in between. His chatty and informative directions and the book's large-sized pages make cooking these desserts a pain-free experience. This is a truly scrumptious and satisfying collection of old-fashioned favorites. --Naomi Gesinger

Have had this book for years!.......2005-03-02
I have tried several recipes from this book and not only are they truly old fashioned desserts, every single on of them turns out perfect and they actually look like the picture in the book. Our favorites include the lemon squares, blondies, and devil's food cake! This book is a permanant resident in my kitchen and gets used frequently!
A Kitchen Staple.......2002-10-01
I have tons of cookbooks but this is one of about 5 that never leave the kitchen. The recipes are easy to follow and always turn out well. It is definitely not for the calorie conscious (9 egg yolks for a quart of ice cream!) but everything is delicious! The writing style is simple and homey and the pictures make you want to cook everything immediately.
MR. BAILEY IS A CLASSIC!!.......2001-01-06
THIS IS A MUST HAVE IF YOU ARE A COLLECTOR OF COOKBOOKS, AND/OR ENJOY BAKING. MR. BAILEY'S BOOKS ARE NOT JUST FOR THE RECIPES, EVEN THOUGH HIS ARE EXCEPTIONAL--ESPECIALLY THE SNICKERDOODLE RECIPE LOCATED IN THIS BOOK--THEY ARE ALSO A FEAST FOR THE SENSES.
IF YOU HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY YOU SHOULD ALSO TRY TO OBTAIN A FEW OF HIS OUT OF PRINT BOOKS, SUCH AS LEE BAILEY'S CITY FOOD, AND LEE BAILEY'S GOOD PARTIES. HIS RECIPES AND INSTRUCTIONS ARE VERY EASY TO FOLLOW. I HAVE NEVER BEEN DISAPPOINTED WITH HIS WORK, AND HIS PHOTOGRAPHER, JOSHUA GREENE, DOES JUSTICE TO ALL THE RECIPES THAT APPEAR.
A absolute "must" for those interested in Southern cooking........1999-06-30
This is a fantastic book! Just reading thru and looking at the pictures is a great experience. It brings back fond memories and rememberances of a more peaceful time. Every recipe therein makes you want to cook and entertain friends.
I was salivating just by looking at the pictures........1998-12-09
This book is very well organized. I personally love a cookbook with all of the recipes in color photos. The ice cream section has a wide variety to chose from. Not a book for calorie-consciensious,but definitely worth having if you enjoy entertaing.

Narrow and outdated........2007-03-08
While well-written, this book comprises of one theme throughout: cracking older PCGS graded coins and re-submitting them in the hope of a higher rating and a higher value. The book is very well detailed in this respect, but many of the older holders have long ago been cracked and re-submitted. Very little in other advice as far as making a profit.
Written by the professional.......2007-02-16
When you buy these kinds of books, you tend to expect some secret techniques of making money. Many books even manage to create the impression of telling you something previously undisclosed, until you try it and realise that it does not work.
This book is written by the professional in this field. Making money in coins is a business, and not such an exciting one, after all. There are a few ways of making a profit honestly (or almost honestly) in numismatics. And there is no guarantee of being succesful. Very sobering message, and this book gets it across well.
I learned a lot from this book and would recommend it to anyone interested in this business.
I tried it. It works........2005-07-30
I bought this book with the idea of picking up some investment coins, salting them away for a few years, and cashing out. While that may indeed work, it's not the essential theme of this book. After reading and thinking through some of the strategies, I became fascinated with the grading arbitrage game that is covered in great detail. Despite Travers' warnings about doing this online (and ebay specifically) I was able to parlay $600 into $1200 in about two months using ebay coin auctions. There is some risk involved and you absolutely must do your homework, but pretty much everything you need is discussed in this book. You can make your own price guide by using the resources on ebay; you will also need the self-discipline to not over-bid!
Interesting but not essential, lots of the usual suspects.......2003-07-12
Mr. Travers is a prolific author, to say the least. I seem to purchase a lot of his books even though I usually find myself thinking that the book at hand might have included more information, which is probably why I purchase a lot of Mr. Travers' books. I'm certain that this is no oversight from the man. Afterall, he makes his money by being meticulous in his own 'editorial' decisions, when looking at coins. I mention this because this book is not exxentially different from his coin 'survival guide.' In other words, you should buy one or the other but not both. In my mind, the biggest difference between the two books is that in the survival guide Mr. Travers discusses the changes in coin grading standards; a topic so esoteric that this info is going to be barely relevant to the overwhelming majority of collectors. In this book Mr. Travers includes a chapter of information that he tells the reader he has never disclosed in book form: The 'When To Sell' chapter. This chapter is useful, as most of Mr. Travers' advice is, but there is nothing really earth shattering in it, just good common sense advice, most of which can be parsed from the other book. To distill Mr. Travers' views in this book, he strongly holds the belief that money can be made by buying undergraded but encapsulated coins and submitting them for regrades, and also by spotting hidden gems amongst so-called raw coins that are out there whose charms are apparent to the keen-eyed and well-informed, i.e. Gather as much coin knowledge esoterica as possible, look carefully at coins for things that countless others have failed to see, and buy gold coins when the price of gold is down and you can hardly fail to make money. Oh, yes, and always go for quality! The one thing that I find to be of enormous help in both books is the excellent and comprehensive discussion of coin grades from AU 58 through MS 70 (and, in this volume a corresponding discussion of Proof coins). My problem with the capsule cracking scheme is that it seems like a mug's game. This view, by the way, is shared by the subjects of the interviews with a couple of coin world heavyweights which are included in this book. To sum up, any book by Mr. Travers is filled with helpful information, but this one has so much shared information with the survival guide that if you have one don't buy the other. If you don't have either, my bias is for this one.
TRAVERS IS A GENIUS!.......2000-07-17
but there is a catch. Yes I am following Traver's advice. I don't plan on making a cent for 6 months. In fact, I plan on being in the red! I loved coin collecting when I was a child. The title IS misleading. But I assume that this is what Western Civilation calls "marketing". I have many of this man's books and a CD. If you love coins...If you are not looking for a fast buck...If you are willing to study hard...If you are willing to follow graphs on the net...If you are willing to subscribe to weekly coin magazines...If you are willing to study different grading systems for evaluating coins - Then you can do it! As I will. Thank you Mr. Travers. You're a Godsend.

Book Description
Church Boy intimately chronicles the life of gospel music sensation Kirk Franklin: his tough childhood, his amazing conversion, and his meteoric rise to gospel music stardom. This national best-seller includes a photo section.
Customer Reviews:
he's a complicated man..........2005-11-18
I've reviewed some of Kirk Franklin's music elsewhere and I'm fascinated in him as a Man of God, an artist, and an entrepreneur. He has taken gospel music in directions that others have not dared and that has made him a polarizing force in the music. Either you love him and think he's the last hope of gospel music or you hate him for "secularizing" the music and sacrificing the purity of the art form. "Church Boy" is Kirk's autobiography, but it is more an attempt to address both his fans and the haters about the motivating forces in his life.
First, I applaud Kirk for not putting out an autobiography that feels like an "As Told To journalist" kind of work. If he was a sports star, he'd hire a journalist who would make his words and ideas seem profound. Instead he's written a work that sounds like his own voice plus minor editing.
The flip side of that is that this book doesn't really follow standard autobiographical practices. It's not so much about what's happened to Kirk; it's more about how what's happened to Kirk allows him to address his fans and the haters. The book can get real preachy as a result. Some reviewers have mentioned that Kirk can appear homophobic at times. He certainly is not shy about asserting that his heterosexuality in the gospel business led him to sexual sin and fathering a child out of wedlock. Moreover, he unabashedly calls out the many homosexual artists in gospel music and states that homosexuality is a sin. That's a really bold statement to assert in print. If you agree with him, then that makes him a true minister of the faith. If you disagree with him, then that makes him a sower of anger and fear. Personally, as a heterosexual male who has enjoyed working with some outstanding gospel artists who were probably gay, I found this stance a little problematic. It's easier hearing about the problems with gay gospel artists from someone like Donnie McClurkin who has walked that walk a little more intimately.
Readers would be wise to consider the context of this book. This book was designed to amplify the ideas in his recording "The Nu Nation Project". The end of the book states how his life and times have built up to that recording. Even his tragic, almost life ending, stage fall helps motivate him to rededicate himself to his ministry. The tragedy is that while Nu Nation is a great CD, I believe it represented the peak of Kirk's fame. Kirk struggled to keep all of the members of his coalition together organizationally and spiritually and he's had to take on more of a solo personality as of late that seems to go against many of the ideas of this book.
Hearing the suddenness of Kirk's fame and the environment from which he came from helps me have a lot more compassion for him. When you were a runt of an outsider and needed to prove yourself, you can see how sudden fame might not have been the best thing for him to handle at such a young age.
Kirk is such a strong songwriter, and I applaud him for including lyrics to many of his songs as chapter lead ins. I take him at his word that he's trying to tell his story more for the musical and spiritual benefit of his listeners than for the marketing benefits of this book.
Ordinarily, I wouldn't recommend this book. It's dated in a lot of ways, and there are certainly better autobiographies on the market. However, gospel music has exploded due to this man. An inexpensive used copy of this book can offer the beginnings of vital insight into how God has used this music to enrich the lives of so many.
Hope this helps.
Blessings...

It's Dangerous to fall into the hands of an Angry God.......2005-10-25
Kirk tried to be frank and honest, but he was cautious. He tries too hard to convince the reader that he is not gay as being labeled by his peers. He tries to show the readers that he has slept with a lot of women but wasn't proud of it. This sounds like he is actually fighting a spirit of homosexuality. Kirk is in and out of the church quite often. He succumbs to his fleshly desires and gives into temptation very easily. Forgiveness is one thing, but yielding is another. He sounds like he is on the edge of reprobate, if not already. Playhouse entertainment is over. It's time to get live; it's time to represent. Check your soul, Kirk, it's in a lot of trouble son.
Love Lami,
Someone who cares about your soul
Kirk isn't a heathen or Lucifer, just a Disciple to Christ.......2005-05-10
I actually ordered this 4 $1.25 discount. And once I got it in the mail and take a open of the book to see there were no scratches or anything I was not dissappointed. This is sure be a good book to read even tho I'm a fan to my all-time favorite artist in gospel, Kirk Franklin. This is a must if u wanna hear more from the man, y'know from behind his childhood, behind his dreams of coming a superstar in the gospel music area, why people think he's unholy or worldly to the Word of Christ, etc.
I been a fan to his music since the beginning. Where be begin his group Kirk Franklin and His Family, God's Property and now 1NC (which stands for One Nation Crew). I'm professionally a trumpet player in the church band and a singer in the youth choir @ Hopewell which ya'll check out @ www.hopewellmissionarybaptist.org.
Wish he'll put out a second one on the way pretty soon. God will continue your travel and thru your heart, Min. Kirk Franklin, u're still da bomb, man. Keep it up. I enjoy hearing and listening to your music. I sure come and work w/ you some day. God bless
Henry "The Preacher" Cooper
Excellent Autobiography on a Talented Man of God.......2005-05-10
Kirk Franklin is one of the most talented and anointed songwriters I've ever heard of. To me, he's the absolute best. In this autobiography, Kirk takes you back to his childhood days. He also talks about what occurred between then and 1998 (when the book was published). -A lot has happened since then, so maybe he should write a continuation. Kirk tells it like it is in this book... there's no holding back. I think that people are sometimes scared of the truth and Kirk brings the truth like no one else. That is why he gets so much flack from folk. People should search their hearts and start focusing on the truth that God wants them to see. Truth that He can show them through a book or someone's life story. Give this book a chance -- it is definitely worth the read!
Dreadful.......2002-07-18
I love Kirk Franklin's music. So does he - and he seems to love himself even more! Not only does this book drip of self-praise and egotism, it rings loudly of homophobia. Of all the horrible things that might have happened to Kirk as a kid (and he doesn't really tell you any!) the worst, in his mind, seems to be that he was called a queer. Give me a break.
Kirk glosses over details, and pretty much everyone outside of his immediate, current, family have no names listed at all.
Don't waste your time AND your money. Buy a CD and be thankful that its ok to love the message and not the messenger!
