Book Description

This is the story of a very brave young girl who was passionately opposed to the Vietnam War and did everything in her power to stop the needless killing of Americans and Vietnamese in a stupid, useless and wrong war. This same young girl could have become a first class mathematician (perhaps a great one) if the war had not interfered.

This is a true story. In an age when most books, movies and plays are bending, or breaking, the truth to achieve the author's selfish ends, it is unusual to have available a book completely dedicated to telling a true story truthfully. The story is told by publishing the letters that Virginia Hanly wrote to the author. The letters are exactly as she wrote them, and no fictionalization or dramatization has been attempted. Goodman has added a few notes where they are necessary to give the proper background for the letters.

Before the Vietnam War, the letters were the friendly letters of a student progressing from a young freshman who knows only high school mathematics to a first class mathematician able to create new and publishable mathematics. But when the United States became more involved in the war, Virginia Hanly devoted all her energy to trying to stop the senseless killing. To learn how Virginia Hanly was a victim of the Vietnam War one must read the book. There, one will find many interesting items about this remarkable young lady.

Another victim of that atrocious war had her bio published, with infamous photo of napalmed, naked child-crying out,running..for her life.. Sometimes, those who cry out are not heard. Goodman was a fried & teacher of Ms Hanly, she was virulently anti-war.His compassionate treatment is the "Johnny Got His Gun" of this era.

    Book Description

Just as "spin" has taken over politics in America, so too has it come to define the long bull market on Wall Street. The booming trade in stocks, which has become a national obsession, has produced an insatiable demand for financial intelligence - and plenty of new, highly paid players eager to supply it. On television and the Internet, commentators and analysts are not merely reporting the news, they are making news in ways that provide huge windfalls for some investors and crushing losses for others. And they often traffic in rumor, speculation, and misinformation that hit the market at warp speed. Howard Kurtz, widely recognized as America's best media reporter, and the man who revealed the inner workings of the Clinton administration's press operation in the national bestseller Spin Cycle, here turns his skeptical eye on the business-media revolution that has transformed the American economy. He uncovers the backstage pressures at television shows like CNBC's Squawk Box and CNN's Moneyline; at old-media bastions like The Wall Street Journal and Business Week, which are racing to keep up with the twenty-four-hour news cycle; and at Internet start-ups like TheStreet.com and JagNotes, real-time operations in the very arena where fortunes are made and lost with stunning swiftness. Bombarded by all this white noise, who among the fortune tellers can investors really trust? Kurtz provides an indispensable guide with this eye-opening account of an unseen world, based on eighteen months of shadowing the most influential, colorful, and egotistical people in business and journalism. Among the people we meet in its pages are: * Ron Insana, Maria Bartiromo, David Faber, Lou Dobbs, and the other famous faces of cable TV * The manic king-of-all-media Jim Cramer, who juggles four different identities - Wall Street trader, television commentator, columnist, and Internet entrepreneur - with wildly varying degrees of success * Shoe-leather reporters Steve Lipin, Chris Byron, and Gene Marcial, whose exclusives drive up stocks or quickly deflate them * Superstar analysts Ralph Acampora, Abby Joseph Cohen, and Henry Blodget, whose predictions make the Dow and Nasdaq gyrate * Internet CEOs Kim Polese and Kevin O'Connor, who struggle to ride the media tiger while promoting their high-flying companies No one has ever reported from inside the Wall Street media machine or laid bare the bitter feuds, cozy friendships, and whispered leaks that move the market. Kutrz exposes the disturbing conflicts of interest among the brokerage analysts and fund managers whose words can boost or bash stocks - thanks to scoop-hungry journalists who rarely question whether these gurus are right or wrong. And he chronicles the journalistic hype that helped propel Net stocks into the stratosphere until they began plummeting back to earth. In a time of head-spinning volatility, The Fortune Tellers is essential reading for all of us who gamble our savings in today's overheated stock market.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars An interesting look inside the crazy world of Wall Street and the media.......2006-10-02

This book is an interesting narrative that looks at the end of the internet bubble and details the events leading up to the tech crash of 2000. It is told mostly through the eyes of various media figures-from CNBC anchors to their rivals at CNNfn to Jim Cramer. For someone who isn't familiar with that time in the market this book offers a great deal of insight-for people who either experienced it firsthand or already know something about it there is probably very little new here.

This book makes for an interesting read. Despite already being familiar with the events covered in this book I was entertained, especially while reading about such colorful figures as Jim Cramer and Mark Haines. The book isn't particularly well-written-the changes in tense (which I'm not sure are always done correctly) are often annoying-but is nevertheless engaging and flows well. This is not a book I would recommend for anything other than a casual read, though as such it is probably worth a look.

4 out of 5 stars fast paced, no-analysis, pure narration.......2004-09-09

In a remarkably well-narrated book, Kurtz, highlights the inordinate amount of power TV business program anchors and their guests have on stock volatility. Though the book focuses on the "bubble" era, the mechanisms of stock price manipulation, intended or coincidental, are equally applicable today as it did in the Internet craze.

Despite the well narrated story lines including many of the better known financial journalists, the book does not build on the few themes introduced in the first chapter itself. After a couple of chapters, the author's take on CNBC anchors' behavior on market movement is predictable. However, the story regarding the development of CNBC, Dobb/CNNfn, Fox, bloomberg, is entertaining, though wouldnt pass as a comprehensive history guide. The focus on Kramer for most part of the book is a bit annoying as well, though the use of thestreet.com's story reveals some interesting aspects of mergers/buy-outs, etc.

In short, a fairly good read, not a great level of details, but clearly highlights (over and over) the impact of journalists on stock prices (as if you needed this book to tell you), intertwined with good story lines on TV persona and journalists.

5 out of 5 stars excelent summary of the financial history of the early '00.......2004-07-29

I read this book years ago when it was a best seller. I bought it on the strength of the reviews of the people written about in this book like Kramer, the CNBC Squakbox people, numerous high profile analysts. They had a positive review of how the book came out, and so I bought and read it. I don't read the Wall Street Journal all the time so the content of this book was educating for me. Howard Kurtz has a show in CNN, he is a media critic, so his take on the financial media and players in it has a degree of credibility. However this book is dated now, there have been many developments since this book hit the bookstores. The time I read this I thought it was wonderful that a summary of the recent financial past was available in a very well written book.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting but not needed for the home collection.......2002-11-24

This book offered some interesting insight into how analyst news and forecasts effect the stock market. The main message I came away with is "don't believe the hype". If you are looking to bolster your confidence in your own ability to make stock picks in the face of contridictory market analysts then take the time to listen to this book. If you're not interested in an autobiogrophy of famous Wall Street gurus then skip it. You can get the same information and much more valuable insight from reading some of the Peter Lynch books.

2 out of 5 stars Too much James Cramer, not enough Wall Street.......2002-06-18

This is mostly a minibio of James Cramer with a lot of attention paid on the side to CNBC and Maria Bartiromo specifically. If you're very interested in Cramer, you can just go get his actual memoir. As for me, I am interested in Wall Street and the system of disseminating and evaluating information and opinion about stocks -- the conflicts of interest, the conventions, the legal rules, the strengths and weaknesses. I don't know how you can analyze those issues without spending time on the role and motivations of key research analysts, the position of the SEC and the communication conventions between companies and journalists, hedge fund and other money managers and the SEC. Any book claiming to treat these issues and focusing on 1998-2000 would have to deal extensively by the phenomenon represented by Mary Meeker and Harry Blodgett, which this book does not. The book focuses disproportionately and without explanation on a few TV personalities without treating the overall issue. Too bad for me.

It would have been fine if the title had been accurate -- something about James Cramer. Or even "Crazy Days at CNBC."

The data does not synthesize into any larger recommendation or theme. It comes across as an accurate chronology without analysis. The writing style is correspondingly dry.

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Enthusiastic and entertaining, although opinionated, rambling and discursive.......2007-04-05

This short introduction to book collecting is a quick, witty and entertaining read. The author's enthusiasm for collecting is obvious.

This is an easy to read, entertaining, and opinionated guide to book collecting. If you are new to this hobby, and have an interest in building a collection that may increase in value over time, this book can be strongly recommended, especially in view of its low price.

The book focuses more on the financial, rather than the reading or educational aspects of this passion. The author spends much more time providing advice on how to collect books that may gain value compared to helping you find inexpensive reading editions, nor does he provide or point the reader to focused reading guides. However, Mr. Budman does present a clear discussion of the pitfalls of entering this hobby with the hope of making money. Experienced collectors will find a kindred spirit, although probably little new information.

There is the occasional editing error, as when the author mentions the term "toned", referring us to the glossary to find its meaning, although "toned" is not in the glossary.

In summary, more experienced collectors, or those focused more toward reading or education, may want to examine this at their bookstore or library before buying. However, for new collectors this will be a valuable addition to their library, one that can be highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Nuggets, Nuggets, Nuggets..........2007-01-14

Let me add my voice to those who characterize this book as a concise and unsnobbish introduction to book collecting.

I purchased and read this book because I own a small bookstore and wanted to learn more about the collectible end of the business. There was a lot of information that was more of a review for me, but I found lots of little nuggets that will help me in my line of work. Some of these included:

            - A discussion and list of publishers which are primarily reprint publishers and have little value and are ubiquitous on the used market

            - A discussion of grading older books and how it is different from grading newer books

            - A bibliography and running commentary of other books on books for further study

            - A discussion about the fluidity of the market, especially on the internet, but also in auctions.

While, I have more interest in selling books than I do in collecting them, I found the book to arouse a desire and passion in me for the possibility of beginning my own collection. I also found Budman to be witty and appreciated his politically progressive undertones.

For the moment, anyways, this is one book I won't be reselling.

            5 out of 5 stars Informational.......2006-11-03

Nice, handy book. Easy to read, and gives the info that a novice
would want. I don't collect books, but the "Bookman" mysteries
prompted me to learn more about the subject.

4 out of 5 stars Good place to get started.......2006-08-21

This book was entertaining and well-written, and very concise. It is a small volume but it's a great introduction to collecting if you're trying to figure out if this is something you want to get more serious about. The resources it offers are great ways to figure out what else you need to learn about and where to get that information. Because if you truly are interested in becoming a book collector you will need another book (at least) to learn more, but this is a good way to pique and guage your interest in the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent place to start.......2005-09-17

I have collected books all my life, and incidentally sell them as I try to make room for more. I recommend this book as the best one on the market right now for true beginners to either book collecting or book selling. It is frank, unsnobbish, and it is very realistic about the changes (good and bad) the Internet has brought to the book market.

Some books on book collecting seem intent on convincing you that book collecting is worthwhile. That is not this author's approach. He takes it for granted that you want to collect or deal in books. What kind of books is up to you -- he is refreshingly unstuffy about that. But if you have an interest in buying or selling books already, the information in this book will make you a much more effective collector/seller.

                  1 out of 5 stars Very unhelpful.......2001-02-27

This book was amazingly unhelpful to me. It touches too briefly on too many different aspects of quilt collecting, without going into depth on anything. For example, included is a list of names of common quilt patterns, with no pictures or diagrams to tell you which pattern is which. What pictures there are are black and white and too small to show anything in detail. I'm not sure what kind of expert I'm supposed to be after reading this book, but it's not the kind of expert who knows anything!

I would stay away from this book. There are other titles that are much better.

5 out of 5 stars good storytelling, creative artwork.......2000-10-24

This book gives a clear, rhyming explanation of the history of quilting in America and how it has changed. The artwork is a fun combination of real quilt photos and hand-drawn images. I bought this for *my mom* to read to her grandkids, in the hopes that it will open doors for her to talk about our own family's quilting history. Quilting was an important part of the history of American women and I'm delighted that this book keeps that history alive for kids today.

5 out of 5 stars best quilting book ever.......2000-10-13

This is the best quilting book I have ever read. It explains how quilts are made so that kids and adults can actually understand it. There are pictures of real quilts inside, and I have seen some patterns that I can't wait to try. My kids love it too. This book was not only fun to read, but I actually learned helpfull stuff too. IT is a must read!

5 out of 5 stars great way to share love of quilts........2000-09-17

I enjoyed sharing this book with several classes of Kdg - 3rd grade students. They sat still to listen to it, with breaks to look at my quilt examples. It's a good way to compare the old methods of quilting with the new. A nice cadence to the words. wonderful photos of real quilts mixed in with drawings. Many common quilt desings are named. My girls and I enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great gift for kids and adults!.......1999-01-02

I am an avid quiltmaker, especially of children's quilts and doll quilts. This gem of a book is a great gift to accompany a quilt you make for anyone, especially kids. It is a great way to explain and share your passion for quilts and quiltmaking. The text is in rhyme and quite charming in and of itself -- but more important, the authors show-and-tell the history of quilting with very accruate facts and details. It tells the story of how quilts warm not only the body but also our souls! And if you a quiltmaker, watch out: the last line of the book will really get you....

i don't normally read autobios of contemporary singers but wen i seen this book which i never knew even existed i had to pick it up. lauryn hill is the most important musical artist of our generation. the only thing i remember about this book was that wyclef got here speaking no english and then learned it and became a star singing that foreign language to the whole world. that's pretty f'n impressive! it was cool to read about lauryn but if you aint a huge fan like me you won't find this book that interesting. certain parts where they sized up all her albums and songs were pretty boring but aside from that it was easy reading. when lauryn hill is old and gray i believe her bio will be alot better than this one. she's doing big things

                        5 out of 5 stars Lauryn Rocks!.......1999-05-10

This book is really good. It really describes how incredible of person Lauryn is. I love Lauryn, and I think its a great biography!

                        2 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful.......1999-04-27

I love Lauryn Hill, but this book doesn't tell her whole life story and everything you wanted to know about this influential, aspiring, great musician.

                        4 out of 5 stars A very emotional account of Hill's achievements.......1999-04-13

As a huge fan of Lauryn Hill, I thought I already knew a lot about her. Still, Chris Nickson provides extra substantial information for everyone interested in the young artist. Without having had the chance to speak to Hill personally and engage her in discussions, he manages to give a gripping account of her career achievements by solely drawing his material from previous articles about her. The result is quite appaling, and, luckily, he leaves speculations out. This is not a huge biography, but it's an emotional report of someone who clearly adores Hill and wanted to write about her as soon as possible.
