Book Description

A follower of Archbishop William Laud, Viscount Scudamore was an ambitious politician. This closely researched study examines how he sought power and prestige through his support of the Crown's financial, religious and military policies; it also examines how he manipulated concepts of honor to present himself on various stages. Through the career of one man, Ian Atherton illuminates much recent work on Laudianism, the Personal Rule of Charles I, Caroline foreign policy, royalism and the outbreak of the civil war.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Monograph about a Seventeenth Century Conservative.......2001-11-30

This is a fine study of a 17th century provincial magnate who who labored hard to gain recognition and promotion from the Court of Charles I, was given an Irish peerage for his vocal support of the Duke of Buckingham in Parliament, and finally was
appointed ambassador to France (1635-9), a position he was little fitted for in view of his dogmatic rigidity and lack of international experience. He also performed disastrously as the leader of the king's party in Herefordshire in the early stages of the Civil War.

He was a staunch royalist and a friend and disciple of Archbishop Laud in his religious views, as evidenced by his extant correspondence with him. Scudamore's own notes on and extracts of his readings are apparently lost, and Atherton makes no attempt to describe his theological beliefs in detail. Instead, he carefully describes Scudamore's recorded behavior in religious matters.

Atherton deserves credit for considerable research and scrupulous adherence to the factual record.

    Book Description

Why did we write it? Because they don't teach it in school. There are basic skills that every person MUST know in order to function in the real world—and it's all "Cool Stuff." We like to refer to these skills as the "fundamentals of life."

In sports, the difference between winning and losing can simply be your grasp of the game's fundamentals. Whether we play sports or not, we're all participants in the game we call "life"--which is the most important game we'll ever play. Do we want to win this game? Of course we do!

Here's the problem: We can have all the enthusiasm and all the passion in the world, but if we don't get the basics down first, all that energy is wasted. The same is true for life. Without knowing the fundamentals you'll probably get hurt and you definitely won't be having fun.

"Cool Stuff" they should teach in school reveals these fundamental skills of life in a fun, easy-to-read format.

After all, why stumble into the real world when you can cruise in … with styyyyle?!

4 out of 5 stars "Cool Stuff" They Should Teach in School.......2007-07-15

Cool Stuff they should teach in school is a guide to jobs, people skills, goals, and money for young adults written by two normal teenagers. This book covers everything from trying to figure out what you want to do with your life and how your attitude actually determine how successful you'll be through how to make a good impression and what not to do during a job interview to how to manage your money and how to make your savings work for you.

I loved the conversational style of this book as well as the straightforward no punches pulled advice. I also liked the colourful Cool Stuff quotes and 2K tips. This is the advice your best friend would give you if he could. Cool Stuff they should teach in school will make a really great gift for any teenager or young adult needing just a little bit of nudge to start their future on the right track.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely worth exploring by students & freshmen...to help face a multitude of real-world challenges.......2006-08-08

From the standpoint of intent, scope & substance, this wonderful book is exactly similar to 'The Power of Focus for College Students' by Andrew Hewitt & Luc D'Adabie. I have reviewed this latter book earlier.

The 'Cool Stuff' book is apparently targetted at high school students (& graduates). The 'Power of Focus' book is targetted at high school graduates & college students, even though the delineation is really not an issue. The earlier book is written by two brothers during their late teen years, in 2004. The latter book, which has been published one year later, is written by two university graduates in their early twenties. This book is also an extension of the earlier 'The Power of Focus' by Les Hewitt, Jack Canfield & Mark Victor Hansen, which is obviously targeted at adult professionals.

Essentially, the 'Cool Stuff' book is designed to help students GET REAL...to help them face a multitude of challenges as they grow from teens to young adults & while they move into the real world. The abundant information in this book are packed into bite-sized nuggets, illustrated with zany graphics.

Whereas, the 'Power of Focus' book is more sober of the two books, with abundant information, as well as inspiring stories, packed into nine focusing strategies. Tactically, it has been designed to help high school graduates & college freshmen in finding fulfilling career pathways.

While the 'Cool Stuff'book has a more light-hearted approach, both books generally help to answer these critical questions:

    - why 70% of graduates are unhappy & disillusioned within five years of leaving college?
    - what 3% of Yale students do that lead them to become wealthier than the other 97% combined?

One interesting point: The entrepreneurial flair of the authors of both books is exemplified by their own respective websites: namely ccolstuffmedia & focusedstudent, which continue to promote their books, seminars & workshops & other stuff.

One last point: The 'Power of Focus' book has a seemingly subtle & yet direct slant towards 'GET RICH' partly because of its association with Donald Trump...so it's also designed to help you build the financial future you so desire.

To sum up my review, both books are really great stuff! If you are a high school student or college freshman, I strongly urge you to go & get a copy to read & to learn how to maximise your high school - & college - experience & also how to deal with a rapdily changing world out there!

    5 out of 5 stars awsome book.......2006-07-20

great book for anyone feeling lost as far as what they want to do with their lives. It makes it really easy to understand all the financial stuff in today's world. I used some of the people skills they have written about and noticed improvemnt.

    this book = miracle

5 out of 5 stars "Cool Stuff" They Should Teach In School.......2006-05-25

I picked up this book this week-end TO "BROWSE" and found myself into the book one hour later, still reading. WOW!!! I sure wish there would have been a book like this for my age group. But, I'm learning a thing or two even now with reading Kent and Kyle's book. This book is a must for any family with teens, pre-teens or adults still wanting to grow. I'm going to buy a copy for our church library, too. What an inspiration this book is-----for everyone! Thanks for writing it.

5 out of 5 stars These guys rock.......2006-05-03

I am 17, and this book was so inspirational. I feel like I am ahead of the game, and that I will be able to face challenges in life no matter what they are. This is also a great book because it was written by guys about my age, so I totally understand what they are talking about, because they went through the same stuff I am. This book is awesome.

    5 out of 5 stars Great tools.......2007-05-19

I'm using this with my 9 year old. I think these are some great tools to help raise my child to stay debt free. At first he was reluctant, but now he really enjoys saving up for things. The commission list helps him track what he's earning and the saving for board gives him a visual reminder of why he wants to save. He still asks for things, but quickly remembers he'd have to use his own money, so he thinks through it and I like seeing him work through these things. I think Dave Ramsey is great and appreciate all his knowledge for my own finances too.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for Little Kids!.......2007-02-05

I purchased this product to use with my 3-year old son. He loves it! In fact, it's a frequent topic of conversation. He likes giving me updates on his "jobs" for the day. This product will help you to teach your children, even young children, the value of money and the linkage to hard work. Dave's system splits up the child's earnings into 3 categories: giving, saving, and spending. My son enjoys all 3: giving money (tithe) at church, saving money for a big toy, and spending money on little cars or candy bars. I highly recommend this product.

3 out of 5 stars You could as easily make your own chart........2006-11-06

If you are already familiar with Dave Ramsey's financial advice for kids, this kit won't offer you anything new. It contains a dry-erase worksheet, which is nice, but not worth the price of the kit. It also contains a story to tell your kids (or have them listen to on CD) and a calculator.

2 out of 5 stars Did not meet Expectations.......2006-11-03

Overpriced for what we purchased. Teaching kids about money is very important and while this product may spark that interest (temporarily), there was not a whole lot to it. Very cheap materials for what we paid. I suppose it did provide a good lesson about buying over the internet because you are taking a risk when you can't see what you are actually buying. Hopefully the kids learned that or more.

4 out of 5 stars Teaching daughter about money........2006-02-19

My wife and I were concerned about teaching our children to be responsible and understand money. We were unable to find a satisfactory book or sytem until we used this tool. Our four year old has been using the system layed out in this pack, and she thinks it's COOL.

This guide is a laminated fold-out with 3 projects - a heart, a scottie dog, and a ninja star. It is very well illustrated and the instructions are clear. It even explains all the markings on a dollar bill. But it's rather skimpy. If I had seen this in a store, I would not have purchased it. For about double the price, I would get The Buck Book.

Jim Hitchner, a name well-known to ABVs and other valuation practitioners, conceived the novel idea of bringing together twenty-five highly visible and well-respected valuation professionals to present the group's collective views and positions on business valuation concepts and applications. Each of the authors is a coauthor of the entire book. The authors, many of whom are ABVs and instructors for the AICPA's national business valuation educational program, include Mel Abraham, Jim Alerding, Terry Allen, Larry Cook, Mike Crain, Bob Duffy, Ed Dupke, Nancy Fannon, John Gilbert, Tom Hilton, Jim Hitchner, Steve Hyden, Greg Koonsman, Eva Lang, Mike Mard, Harold Martin, Mike Mattson, Ray Moran, Charles Phillips, Jim Rigby, Ron Seigneur, Robin Taylor, Linda Trugman, Don Wisehart, and Mark Zyla.

The result of this collective effort is "Financial Valuation" - a text that presents a compilation of "best practices" for the business appraiser.

"Financial Valuation" covers the obligatory fundamentals found in most other introductory texts. What sets this text apart from others is its focus on applications and methods. I think the book is well written, and complete.I especially liked the pictures of the blocks. The indexing is easy to follow.

The book reveals the intense research the author employs in all of her works. I particularly enjoyed the ease of identification by which any block can be researched by a series of shapes. Recently I was asked to conserve a family quilt which I called "Spools". Hidden for 90 years in a chimney in Fort Worth Texas, the book revealed it is also called "Double Bit Ax" and that name originated in Amarillo in 1879. This information gave the heirs a clue to the maker of their quilt.

This is a great, if not the best historical source of quilt patterns in print. Every quilter and quilt historian should have one!

This book is an awesome reference tool! It does not have instructions on how to put the blocks together, but a quilt-savvy person may be able to figure it out. The book appears complicated but I found it was easier to use the second time around.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book.......2006-06-26

I purchased this book to use as reference. I needed something that would date some blocks. This book does that. Not all the blocks have a definite date but give a "ball park" date. At least it is a start. I wanted this information because of all the discussion about copyright issues. I am finding out that the majority of patterns published today are spin offs of previous blocks.

              Book Description

Acclaimed doll costumer Louise Hedrick presents patterns for creating a complete wardrobe of 30 ensembles for this beloved French doll, authentically adapted from the patterns offered in issues of La Semaine de Suzette from 1905-1916. Arranged chronologically within the categories of whitework, lingerie and nightwear; dresses, bonnets and coats; outfits for make-believe (déquisements); and special clothing for the important ceremonies of The Church, the patterns vary in difficulty from the easiest to the most advanced. Completed ensembles are modeled on early Bleuettes and shown in full-color, with close-up views of important details; directions for heirloom sewing techniques and embroidery stitches are included. Ms. Hedrick's patterns are introduced by Bleuette expert Barbara Hilliker's authoritative text, which places the clothing in the context of social and fashion history. Ms. Hilliker also offers a basic introduction to the history of Bleuette.

The book starts with a little history of the doll from French and great vintage pictures are added (through out the book) to show how things were back than and there are instructions how to make the right embroidery stitches that were used. Patterns are actual size and easy to trace. Instructions are easy especially when you're an more experienced sewer but also the novice can have an easy start sewing because there are all kinds of patterns to find in this book. From very easy to complicated (more pattern pieces, pleats to make, put trimming on etc.)you will always find the right pattern to start with.
The pictures of the fashions to make, are the size of one page - 9"x12" - so all kinds of details are there to see. What can I say but this is a wonderful addition to your doll(pattern) books and I'm sure you'll love it! Good for hours and hours of reading and sewing pleasure.

              5 out of 5 stars excellent patterns.......2005-09-06

Louise uses the original French patterns and sews them as they were meant to be done. Her work is inspiring.

Publishers Weekly calls Martha Smith "a sort of Erma Bombeck of the floral plot." Beds I Have Known reveals the hilarious side of gardening, including what it's like to be mistaken for Martha Stewart and what agricultural one-upsmanship is all about. The best chapters, though, are her funny, rather touching stories about gardening oddballs such as Antoinetta Goodwin, who planted marigolds in city traffic circles, and Martha's neighbor, John the Dahlia King. There's something self-revelatory about gardening, and Martha lets it all hang gloriously out.

I found this gardening memoir to be both feisty and funny. I love the way Martha Smith describes her "Mae West Memorial Garden". I could almost smell the lilacs and dahlias as I was reading. For anyone who loves gardening essays with a humorous slant this book is a must read!!

My husband and I are both avid gardeners and on a recent road trip, I read this book aloud to him as he drove and he almost wrecked from laughing so hard. This is a very funny book and the author knows too well the joys as well as the back-breaking hard work that gardening can be. My favorite chapter - "Canna lily kill you?" - a must read for gardeners who enjoy a spike of humor.

5 out of 5 stars Best gardening book I've read!.......1998-12-22

This is a must read for anyone who loves the joy of gardening and knows it's Nature's Prozac. Smith is a funny, witty, spirited writer and my only woe was that it was too short. Yes, 300 plus pages was simply not enough of her wonderful outlook on life and gardening and people and giving. As a writer and writing teacher, I'm sensitive to good writing and Martha Smith's work exceeded my expectations.

Please take my advice and read this collection. Then go out and get your hands dirty. You'll be in good company. I'd say more, but my garden and my dog are waiting!

              Book Description

Very few people are allergic to food, but most of us suffer adverse effects when we eat certain things. The reason is that our body is intolerant of particular chemicals, and it reacts to them as if we were being poisoned. We then experience a variety of symptoms such a stomach ache, headache, sweating, skin rashes, diarrhoea, palpitations, and vomiting. When several of these affect us at one time they are likely to indicate that we are suffering from food intolerance and this is what the book is all about. If we can identify which components of our diet are likely to cause intolerance, then we can make sure we don't take in too much at one meal and so provoke the body to react. Human metabolism has developed to cope with small amounts of all kinds of non-nutrients in our food, even some that are highly toxic. What it cannot cope with are large amounts, and for sensitive people even relatively small amounts can trigger the body to over-react. This is why the same meal can affect people in very different ways. There are only a few common chemicals that can provoke an intolerance reaction: alcohol, benzoates, caffeine, dopamine, histamine, monosodium glutamate, nitrate/nitrite, phenylethylamine, salicylates, serotonin, solanine, sorbates, tryptamine/octopamine, and tyramine. The book examines the principal causes of food intolerance, explaining how this differs from food allergy, which few suffer from, and identifies the chemicals that cause it - many of which are natural - and the foods that contain them. It also reveals why food intolerance occurs, what its symptoms are, and why some people are so badly affected by a particular non- nutrient, while others suffer no upset at all. The book also contains chapters on natural toxins, and unnatural food additives and food contaminants. It explains the key nutrients in our diet and highlights the foods richest in the essential ones that we may be lacking. Most of the chapters are devoted to a few key non-nutrients that account for the majority of cases of intolerance. Each section is illustrated with actual case notes from people who have been badly affected by their diet. The book ends on an upbeat note with a final chapter giving dietary advice for maintaining a healthy heart. If you've ever wondered why something you eat does not agree with you, then this is the book that will help you discover what this is likely to be, and why your system reacts so badly to it. Written in an easy-to-understand style, Food Intolerance will take you through all aspects of food, especially identifying those non-nutrients that provoke a toxic response and make us ill.

              4 out of 5 stars To read.......2003-02-14

a good book, very sintetic and clear. To me you have to read this absolutely.

              5 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2002-09-09

This book presents a very informative introduction to foods that make people sick. The authors, a university chemistry professor and an allergist MD are quite knowledgeable. They present the mainstream scientific research on food intolerance in a way that is easy to comprehend for the general reader. Dr. Emsley's interest in chemistry is evident throughout the book as he explains the biochemistry of what happens to the food we put in our bodies as well as the chemistry behind food intolerance symptoms.

Emsley and Fell are very clear on what is a food allergy and what is not. They explain that a person is properly said to have an allergy to food only if his or her immune system is involved in a negative response, and that true food allergies are not very common. On the other hand, many other people, perhaps as many as 20%, are intolerant of certain foods. According to the authors, this intolerance is because they lack the ability to break down the food into usable chemical substances. Food intolerance can cause many of the same symptoms as food allergies, but it is also implicated in such problems as headaches or mood disorders; in rare occasions, food intolerance attacks can even be fatal.

With their definition of food intolerance as any situation where the body is overwhelmed by the chemicals in what has been consumed, the authors go beyond standard "problem foods" identified in other books on the topic (such as biogenic amines, salicylates, and sulfites). For example, they discuss how alcohol is broken down chemically in the body, and the chemistry behind drunkenness and hangovers. They also discuss the toxins involved in food poisoning, a very extreme type of intolerance reaction that everyone is susceptible to.

Overall, I found this book highly informative, much more so than books that lump all food problems into the allergy category. The book includes a brief guide to nutrition and food for a healthy lifestyle, but these sections seem almost an afterthought. The book doesn't include a special diet or treatment plan. Instead, its main strength is the scientific explanations of what happens in a food intolerance attack. I think it will go a long way towards helping me understand why I can nibble some foods, but not indulge freely. In general, it's great for patient information, but MDs and naturopaths may also find much of interest.

4 out of 5 stars Food intolerant? You need this book........2000-11-23

At last - information on how, naturally occurring, food chemicals can make you ill. The food chemicals covered include amines, salicylates, caffeine, sulfur, MSG and lectins. If you are convinced that food is in some way making you ill but allergy tests and traditional elimination diets have shown up nothing then this is the book for you.

You'll discover how even the 'healthiest' of foods such as fruit and vegetables can be toxic to some people. You'll also find out about natural toxins including, among many others, mad honey disease, mushroom and mold toxins. There are also sections on food additives and advice on vitamins. And chapters on alcohol and on the important role the gut has to play.

I myself am salicylate sensitive and there is so little information generally available that I wholly applaud John Emsley and Peter Fell for making this information available.

The only down side is that, although they present details of food chemicals and very useful case histories to illustrate the type of health problems that can be caused by these, they don't give much guidance on how to test for a sensitivity to these chemicals. But still, an excellent starting place.

The book is clearly written and easy to read. An absolute must for anyone concerned about food chemicals.

              Book Description

From the preeminent journalist and authority on contaminated food, a one-of-a-kind guide for safeguarding against food hazards.

Slight fever. Nausea. A rumbling in the stomach. Diarrhea. What you might think is the flu was probably something you ate. Food-borne illness afflicts 81,000,000 Americans each year, killing 9,000 annually, and yet too many people ignore the fatal hazards lurking in our markets, restaurants, and kitchens.

Now food-pathogen expert Nicols Fox offers a useful, informative guide to preventing, diagnosing, and surviving a food-borne illness. Far more serious than a slight discomfort in the abdomen, food-based pathogens can have long-term physical consequences, leaving victims with lifelong impairment of the digestive system and damage to the lungs, ears, kidneys, brain, and heart. Fox surveys the complicated terrain of food-borne disease, profiling common and uncommon pathogens such as Salmonella, hepatitis A, E. coli, Campylobacter, and Cyclospora. She also outlines practical advice for dealing with common symptoms and illness-prevention techniques for the home and restaurants. Combining the real stories of victims of food-borne illness with the most up-to-date information about emerging food-borne pathogens, It Was Probably Something You Ate is a sourcebook you may not be able to live without.

I have followed the contamination of our food supply with interest, but nothing puts it in perspective like Ms. Fox's book. There is so much more food-borne illness that goes unreported that it's a miracle you haven't already gotten sick from something you ate, unless you have.

Her reporting is meticulous and runs the gamut from meat packers to academic reports. I rank this book right up there with "Diet for a New America" and "Fast Food Nation." As soon as I finished reading this book, I read "Spoiled - Why Our Food Is Making Us Sick and What We Can Do About It," also by Ms. Fox.

There is enough irrefutable factual information in these books to put you off most mass-produced food forever. Fortunately, the author also includes information on how to avoid food-borne illnesses and what to do if you think you have come in contact with a food-borne illness. She has opened my eyes to the hazards of our age, and equipped me to protect myself against them. For this, and for a very readable book, I thank her.

5 out of 5 stars A wake-up call regarding the food contamination problem.......1999-09-30

Most Americans are aware that spoiled food can make a person ill; but after reading this book by Nicols Fox, I now take meticulous care in the kitchen. Disposable cutting boards, plenty of soap and hot water; clean knives to cut vegetables, etc. are all some of the changes I have made. everyone MUST read this book!!

5 out of 5 stars Read It and Avoid Trouble!.......1999-07-14

What you don't know really can (and probably does!) hurt you!! Nicols Fox here provides a timely and sobering look at the problems facing all of us in today's global food market. Although you probably won't remember all the scientific names of the microscopic beasties which may ruin your day/week/month/year, you WILL walk away with some pragmatic ways to minimize the number of times per year food makes you sick. EVERYONE WHO EATS FOOD IN AMERICA SHOULD READ THIS BOOK!!!! IN OTHER WORDS, BUY IT, read it, and heed it!!

It was great to have the band members themselves give their view of things, but there's little that couldn't be summed up in a couple of pages. Instead you get countless variations on a few themes: John Fogerty loves the blues, CCR worked hard with John in control, John is a vindictive jerk.

It would have been nice to have heard from a broader range of people: childhood friends, early fans, etc.

4 out of 5 stars A very good oral history of the band........1999-06-15

A very good book. It has comments from all the members of the band on the bands' rise, fall, and aftermath. The author does a good job of mixing old interviews with newer ones. He also inserts comments and observations on why the band, and John Fogerty in particular, have become such an american staple. It was interesting to read about J. Fogerty's approach to songwriting and music and also what some of the inspirations were behind his songs. Reading the band members' comments about what happened after was both insightful and sad. Cook and Clifford claim that J. Fogerty should accept some of the responsibility for the bad blood that is betwween them. While some of this may be true, C & C should also accept some of the blame for the bands' demise, which I feel they did not do. Call Fogerty whatever want, but he's the reason that the band rose to the top. It was his drive and determination and musical vision that enabled the band to reach the level of success that they attained. After the band split up, it is J. Fogerty's solo work that gets the interest and publcity. Cook and Cliffords solo careers? Ehhhhhh. I also feel that C & C should've supported Fogerty more in his battles with Saul Zantz. This book is a very good companion peice to Hank Bordowitz's "Bad Moon Rising: The Unofficial History of Creedence Clearwater Revival".

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest I've ever read........1999-05-22

If you are a big Creedence/John Fogerty fan you will enjoy this book. This book takes you step by step through just about every single thing that happened to Creedence from the time they started to the time they went their seperate ways and started new projects, recently. This book is actually priced too low, it should be priced a lot higher and you'll agree with me if you buy it and read it. It is wonderful.

"I had the feeling from the moment I saw Karski that he carried secret, invisible wounds in him...I saw he was fighting back the memories."–– Elie Wiesel

"A significant account of personal heroism—not only dramatic as a story but also a compelling moral message regarding the human condition . . . a superb read."–– Zbigniew Brezinski

                    NOW IN PAPER!

Working for the Polish Underground, Jan Karski witnessed first hand the horrors of the Holocaust. Surviving Soviet captivity and Gestapo torture, he escaped Poland in 1942 and embarked on a heroic crusade to give Allied leaders his eye witness report of Nazi extermination of European Jews. Karski is the first definitive account of the little-known episode—one of the earliest documentations of atrocities to reach the west and perhaps the most significant warning of the genocide to come. Karski's story introduces vital new insights about the Polish Underground, and about the Allies' reaction to the Holocaust.

                    E. THOMAS WOOD (Nashville, Tennessee) is a reporter for the Tennessean in Nashville. STANISLAW M. JANKOWSKI (Cracow, Poland) is a journalist and historian. He is the leading authority on the Polish Underground.

4 out of 5 stars An amazing, inspiring life, and an exciting read as well.......2002-08-21

I first heard about Jan Karski when I read his obituary in the New York Times a few years back. After reading the obituary, I thought that this guy led an exciting and profound life, and that his life story would make a great book and/or movie (Steven Speilberg, are you listening?). That's why I'm glad I found this book.

Jan Karski was a young diplomat in Poland when the Germans invaded in 1939. Before the invasion, he seemed to be more interested in the political power struggles of the day rather than the moral and ethical quandaries of war. That soon changed after he was taken prisoner and sent to both Soviet and Nazi prison camps. He spent the war years secretly delivering messages around Europe for the Polish underground, and word of his exploits soon spread among the Allies. He was later sent to Britian and later, the United States, where he became a citizen and lived out the rest of his life.

His near-famous quest to relay the horrors of the Holocaust to the skeptical Allies is only one facet of this individual's life. The authors excelled at opening my eyes to the political infighting among various factions of the Polish resistance (politics doesn't die in wartime, it just goes underground, I learned), and they seemed to paint Karski as an individual who became more interested in working for human freedom and dignity than for carving a political legacy for himself in a postwar Poland.

Karski's days in Britain got a bit dry in the book; his wartime adventures in occupied Europe and his postwar days at Georgetown University (as the world began to recognize his contributions) held my attention the most.

As a bonus, a guide to the many characters Karski dealt with in his life is included in the appendix...a handly tool for keeping track of who's who in this book.

4 out of 5 stars An inspiring and exciting story.......2000-08-18

Jan Karski, who died in July 2000, was a larger than life hero from World War II, who tried to smuggle out information from Nazi occupied Poland to warn the rest of the world about the horrors happening to the Jewish population of his country. He was captured by the Nazis, tortured, escaped, eventually met with President Roosevelt, and truly lived an unbelievably brave and inspiring life. The story is better than any fictional thriller or Hollywood movie. You have to keep reminding yourself that what you are reading is true. It keeps your attention throughout the book, though the last couple of chapters are less exciting naturally than the rest, once the war is over. One has to wonder if there are people like Jan Karski living today...
