Regarding AR-15 Volume #2
Most of the reviews here are clearly for the first volume which I also enjoyed thoroughly. I could hardly wait for volume 2 to become available. However it was quite a let down. It was virtually void of the technical information Patrick usually provides and instead was filled with quips and comments. He spent too much time trying to be funny and or arrogant instead of providing his usual first class reviews. Editing left a lot to be desired as relevant pictures were often pages away from the text they supported. I have many of Patrick's books, but,I definitely would not recommend AR-15 Volume 2, sorry Patrick, you let us down with this one.

Not as good as it should be........2007-07-13

I am very disappointed in Gun Digest Book of the AR-15 Vol 2. I found volume 1 enjoyable and informative, however volume 2 is neither of these. My main impression from reading the book is that it was thrown together in a hurry just to get it published. The topics of the chapters are presented with very little detailed information being given.
I have read other books and many magazine articles by Patrick Sweeney and know he is very knowledgeable and usually is able to give the reader useful information in a way that is enjoyable and easy to understand. However, this book falls well short of his normal standards.

Good information poorly presented.......2007-04-24

There is useful information here from a knowledgeable writer, but in a package that needs editing. There is nothing wrong with monochrome photos. These aren't birds or ballgowns; they are precision mechanisms. However, many of the photos are poor quality, or poorly rendered, which is why they have to be so large; many contribute little to the text. The text itself is choppy and peppered with typos. Unexplained jargon is interspersed with elementary explanations. A large percentage of the book is devoted to exhaustive and quickly outdated examination and testing of individual manufacturers' complete rifles, ignoring the reality that few remain intact for long. The whole book seems hastily and carelessly assembled, a first draft bound and sold for a chunk of change.
I haven't seen Vol II (which Amazon is listing under the exact same title so look at the cover art). Hopefully Gun Digest will have given Mr. Sweeney more editorial assistance this time.

Excellent foundation.......2007-01-05

The Gun Digest Book of the AR-15 addresses the substantial areas of the AR-15 and AR-10 which do not go out of date and, with a late 2005 publishing date, it is current enough to provide useful information regarding trends in modifications and accessories. The language and illustrations are clear and concise, all arranged in a logical fashion, making it easy for people just coming to this platform to get a quick and practical education.

Patrick Sweeney covers the subject firearm beginning with history, theory of operation, detail on the critical subject of various types and selection of barrels. Then the more mundane is covered; testing, cleaning, routine maintenance are also well illustrated and detailed in text. Not a generic formula piece, Sweeny sheds light on areas like the AR-15 magazine, a weak spot in the AR-15 if not properly attended. It is nice to see myths debunked, a head to head comparison with the AK, as this seems always the opposing appreciation camp. Legalities, as a section, is substantially current with the exception of some more recent California law that permits fixed and limited capacity magazines to be sold.

When I was researching to purchase an AR-15, the round up sections covering every major manufacturer was extremely helpful offering objective and subjective assessment of most every major brand, pointing out supplier history, strengths and weaknesses of product and personal experience. This area is a bit dated, but substantially valid. There is nothing wrong with what is presented, the issue is more what is more recent news that is not present. As an example, Bushmaster abandoned the .308 AR-10 type gun when the company was recently sold and there is no reference, of course, to the new 45 Bushmaster. However, Bushmaster products as presented are well detailed and defined. There are new players in the market. A company that has been producing M-16 rifles and now has moved into the AR-15 civilian market is not listed; High Standard, a Texas based manufacturer. Olympic Arms now offers super short magnum and short magnum chambered models, as does Armalite. There is coverage of cartridges that were launched in the AR-15 platform but faded away, the 502 comes to mind, but no mention of the commercially successful 50 Beowulf and 6.5 Grendel or Alexander Arms. The 458 SOCOM is also absent. This may be the changing, or at least expanding face of the AR series rifles that will require another well written book.

This book was such an inspiration to me and has profoundly influenced my own artistic journey. This isn't merely a card making business how-to book but, rather, it is an inspiring tale of one woman's journey as a writer and an artist and how she found her voice in the art world. Gloria shares with us in an open and honest way the good and the bad of creating cards and making a business of it. Unlike traditional business start-up books, this delves into the emotional side in a very personal way that invites the reader to explore and learn from the experience of a very successful and talented artist. It was a joy to read through this book and I keep referring back to it often for not only for inspiration and insight but, because it is encouraging as well. Every serious artist who is wanting to sell their work for profit should invest in the experience and lessons from someone who has been there and understands oh so well. As an instructor and professional artist myself, I recommend this book to all my students and have given away numerous copies as gifts as well.

Personal insight with profound experience .......2005-09-21

This book was a real surprise for me. I was expecting to read another one of the How-to books on the business of Art, but luckily, this one is different!
Right from the first page you feel like you are talking to an old friend, you have not seen for a long time. And at the first meeting, she tells you what has happened to her since the last time you did see each other. It's a very personal book, but it does at the same time offer a lot of insights into the bussines of Art.
For me personally this was very important and very mind opening, and this in not just a phrase: one day I had a call from a publisher asking me, if I would like to write a book for them. This had been a livelong dream for me, but without reading Gloria Pages' book just shortly before having this call, I am sure, my answer would not have been the " YES", that I did give them! Even during the phone call I still had Gloria's words in my ear: Go for it! My book was published in May this year. Thank you, Gloria for helping me on the way to my dreams!!

Hal Thau's career, as with most high achievers, is a study of perseverance, determination and introspection. As he discusses the "pioneering spirit" in one chapter, the reader sees clearly through his examples and experiences that Thau does indeed have the pioneering spirit...and the ability to work with others (actors, entertainers, etc.) who also have it to help them "focus." I found his mix of sharing about the celebrities he managed and the personal glimpses of his own life and values excellent. I also appreciated Thau's poetic way of expressing things...his observations and introspection are thoughtfully and often poignantly expressed... It is so very interesting to read of this man's success in show business/management/producing and to also see he has kept his feet on the ground. His is an example of a life in which both worldly success and personal success are achieved and balanced. I highly recommend this book for all who share an entrepreneurial spirit--for all who seek to follow their dreams...it is an inspiring and insightful book.

Review of the BOOK not the service.......2007-03-28

I have a copy of the previous edition and found it so helpful that I wanted the 4th edition. I am the mother of a child (now a grown man) with learning disabilities (experience has shown that it is never just one). I homeschooled for 7 years and am now a certified teacher for ESE students. I found the previous edition while "subbing" for another ESE teacher years ago. I have recommended this book to others because it is concise, easy to read and very helpful. I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 because the author does tend to spend more time on ADD and ADHD. Still, the book has been "spot on" for many of the tendencies and traits I have found in many of my students and my own child and I have found the advice very helpful. I only wish that I had come in contact with this book earlier so that I could have helped my child more.

By the way, I have been ordering from Amazon for several years now and have never had a problem - knock on wood! :o)

Just some detail clarifications.......2005-01-04

Larry Silver's book is full of useful information, explained in a relatively nontechnical way to the nonspecialist. But I would like to address a certain detail inaccuracy in the way he explains IQ scores:

On Page 193 of the third edition, he says that "scores between 85 and 110 are considered to be within the average range." Actually, for reporting purposes, 90-109 are considered Average. 80-89 is Low Average, and 110-119 is High Average. Then there are other classifications for scores below or above these levels.

Another way of looking at "Average" is to broaden the range to one standard deviation below and one standard deviation above 100. This is 15 points each way. The Average range would be 85-115.

So "Average" would be either 90-109, or 85-115; not 85-110.

Also, the WISC is now in its 4th edition as of summer 2003. There are no longer Verbal IQ, Performance IQ and Full Scale IQ. Instead, there are four "indices" (plural of "index"): Verbal Comprehension, Perceptual Reasoning, Working Memory, Processing Speed. Plus the Full Scale IQ, which is roughly an averaging of the four indices. Hopefully this change will be addressed in the fourth edition of Dr. Silver's book.

A Godsend!.......2003-04-22

I bought this book out of total desperation, and I laughed and cried my entire way through it. Dr. Silver explains what we have been living, and it is understandable, readable, and right on the money. There is no hocus-pocus, junk, or controversial ideas in this book, it is the right stuff to get you help for your child. If you can't get Dr. Silver in person, then this book is a good substitute. Through this book, I also discovered that I have had ADHD all of my life, and it was never diagnosed. It was like a lightbulb went on. When you finish this book, there will be no question if ADHD is the problem. Through this book, I am now working on getting help for my son and for myself. Thank You, Dr. Silver!

A good overview.......2003-01-22

As a mother whose child has just been diagnosed with learning disabilities and ADHD, I found this book very helpful. It provided a thorough overview of how these conditions are evaluated and treated, and valuable advice for getting assistance for your child from his/her school. I also appreciated the author's obvious compassion for children who are having difficulties in school, and his insistence that the child's emotional issues (either caused by, or causing, the symptoms of ADHD) not be overlooked. Finally, unlike a lot of books about ADHD and learning disabilities, this book was mostly substantive information with very little fluff and filler. I would recommend this book to any parent in my situation.

I can see how this book could be very helpful to parents
of kids with ADHD. The sections on advocating for your
child are also bound to be useful to many parents. But
this book isn't much help to parents of non-ADHD kids.

The magazine's editors began the Better Homes & Gardens Prize Tested Recipes Contest in 1923 and it has been a popular source of inspiration for home cooks ever since. This volume offers more than two hundred of the best from the past seventy-five years -- though, presumably because of changes in tastes, most actually date from the 1970s and later. Along with a large number of excellent recipes, many of them enticingly photographed, there are fascinating bits of culinary trivia: the circumstances behind the introduction of sangria, zucchini, and Belgian waffles to the U.S., the ups and downs of coffee-drinking, the invention of instant biscuit mix, the fudge brownie, and white chocolate, and many other subjects of interest. As always with the magazine, the recipes are clear and easily reproducible.

This book is full of great dishes in all categories. The recipes are all winners in various contests by BHG, and recipes even date back to the 1930's. Full of classic recipes, not just the latest trends. Beautiful photographs and easy-to-read layout. This is a classic cookbook, would make a great gift (but only after you've bought one for yourself first!).

Since 1960, housing built by the Housing and Development Board has become part of the Singapore scene. As a consequence of the Home Ownership Scheme, 81% of all HDB flat dwellers own the units in which they live. The flats are sold at affordable prices, make possible by government subsidies.

HDB housing, for all intents and purposes, is public housing. However, as it evolves from a basic necessity to a source of wealth for its owner, questions have been raised about the true meaning of private ownership of public housing in view of the 99-year leases on public housing and the restrictions on such ownership and its transfer. This book examines the rights of the owners of such housing, and the question of whether it is appropriate to refer to the rights of the HDB flat dwellers as ownership. It traces in detail and chronologically, many of the major pieces of legislation introduced in support of the development of public housing estates and their management in Singapore. This book would be of particular interest to researchers of urban housing and its legal framework.

Redemption and omission.......2000-11-28

While there can be no question as to the veracity of my cousin Boris' account of his Holocaust expereince, I found it curious that he makes no mention of my father, Julius Dalkoff. Boris' wife, Tamara, has gone on at great length as to how Julius helped bring them to the states after the liberation. Jacob is mentioned--even his wife Ethel. But not Julius.

No, the Holocaust should never be forgotten. One would like to believe though, that those who helped should not be forgotten either.--Seymour Dalkoff
