Nothing new here.......2007-07-13
This book is more or less a repeat of the introduction to the Complete Price Guide to Watches, by the same author. Save yourself time and money by buying the latter work, which is much more informative on watch pricing and contains all the information in this one.
should be titled " collecting American pocket watches".........2006-11-18
The book is well written, and is primarely about watches produced in the USA, and pocket watches at that. There are a lot of illustrations, and describtions of most of the principles of the art of watchmaking.
Not for wristwatch collectors.......2006-04-30
This book is primarily written for collectors of pocket watches and only gives cursory information regarding wristwatches. Should be titled: Collecting Pocket Watches

Thank you for the swift order. You saved me a great deal of money for my school book.
Book Description
Rompers and booties and cute animal designs: there’s nothing more adorable than babies’ outfits, and these small and precious garments make easy-to-carry and quick-to-knit projects. That’s why Vogue’s first Knitting on the Go: Baby Knits collection was so popular—and why this follow-up will absolutely entice knitters and warm their hearts as the needles click along. What could be sweeter than a tiny “faux fur” coat? Amazingly, it’s simple to make, with only a few stitches and rows; the thick yarn does most of the work. Baby will look completely endearing in an Origami Jacket, Giraffe Cardigan and Hat, Aran Pullover, or Bonnet and Booties. Other practical and good-looking accessories include the Felted Baby Bag to carry it all and Gingham Blanket.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome Baby Blankets.......2007-07-16
I love the book it was a gift to someone who is making a blanket for their grandbaby.
Adorable blankets.......2007-03-06
Whether you want the traditonal baby-ish baby blanket or a more modern one this is the book you want. Great variety of styles! I made the sheep blanket and it knit up quickly and was a wonderful gift.
Pretty darned cute........2005-08-08
I bought the book for one specific pattern, a grass-green baby blanket with fluffy Berroco "Plush" sheep grazing on it. The pattern calls for Goa, a cotton yarn which has been discontinued, but I found a good substitute.
The pattern was clearly written and easy to follow. I am thrilled with how it turned out, and so is the recipient, her baby, and everyone else who sees it. The rest of the patterns in the book appear to be clear and well-written too. However, if I never make another thing from this book, I will consider the price well worth it for just that one pattern.
Some cute projects.......2004-08-19
The beauty of this book is its tiny size and quickness of projects. The first few pages are dedicated to a quick review of knitting, and then the fun begins. As the title indicates, most of the items featured are blankets, and some of them are just so cute! They use a variety of techniques, including three-dimensional textures (which babies love), color work, cable work, felting, entrelac, and stripes. One blanket looks so sophisticated that it can be easily expanded to be a grown-up blanket. There are both subdued patterns, emphasizing stitch texture, and more bold patters which emphasize color contrast and feature animals, etc. Colors can be adapted to any gender or nursery setting.
Book Description
“Packed with fun-to-knit designs. Of the two dozen designs...more than half could also be used as lap robes for adults and all are excellent designs by top Vogue knitwear designers.”—Library Journal. “Has 20 lovely styles to choose from, perfect for any knitter who wants something a little more special for a special new arrival. Here’s your chance to make a Kaffe Fassett baby blanket. ...a lovely little book, good value for money.”—Knitters’ Forum.
Customer Reviews:
baby blankets.......2005-08-31
Some of the blankets in here are kind of weird-looking, but there are enough cute ones to make the book worth buying.
Some cute projects.......2004-08-19
The beauty of this book is its tiny size and quickness of projects. The first few pages are dedicated to a quick review of knitting, and then the fun begins. As the title indicates, most of the items featured are blankets, and some of them are just so cute! They use a variety of techniques, including chevron, color work, patchwork, entrelac, three-dimensional textures (which babies love), and lace. There are both subdued patterns, emphasizing stitch texture, and more bold patters which emphasize color contrast and feature animals, etc. Colors can be adapted to any gender or nursery setting.
Do not buy this book unless you want a lot of frustration.......2004-03-09
I am an experienced knitter and picked what I thought would be a relatively easy pattern - never have I been so frustrated. The instructions were not explicit enough and I have spent hours trying out my own methods to accomplish what the designer wanted me to do. At this point I really have no desire to even try any more or ever try another Vogue pattern.
Really cute, sweet patterns.......2001-07-27
This is a really sweet collection of baby blankets--it will make you want to have a child to knit for. However, I agree with a vew of the other reviewers who say that there are some mistakes in the patterns, and it is not really a book with much for beginners. Blankets may seem like a good choice for a really easy starting project, but this is not necessarily the book to work with.
Pretty pictures are not the whole story.......2001-04-24
While the format and outlay of this little book is very appealing, the editors did not review the actual knitting directions for consistency and clarity--for example where squares were of 18 rows, they are suddenly changed to 10 ridges. In other cases, the sequence of steps was very unclear and poorly stated.
The multi-colored blankets give very little direction for finishing and thought for how the back of a blanket might look and hold together under fairly strenuous use.
For the most part, it's probably a good idea to choose the single colored patterns.
Book Description
What better way to welcome a newborn into this world than with a soft baby blanket stitched from the heart? This is the third Knitting on the Go volume devoted to this favorite, easy, and portable project, and the first to focus on only crocheted blankets. It features more than twenty designs in a range of styles to suit every skill level, purpose, and occasion, including a bold granny square blanket worked in bright pinks, oranges and purples, and a more traditional pastel pink-and-white design with soothing stripes and embellished flowers. A playful rubber ducky checkerboard is certain to become baby’s most beloved blankie, while families will surely pass the gorgeous cashmere heirloom coverlet from generation to generation.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting but, ..................................2007-06-11
The book was smaller than I thoughtit would be. There were really only two very nice patterns, the one on the cover and another one. If I had it to do again, I would purchase for the one on the cover.
interesting blankets.......2007-06-02
There are 24 baby blankets using a variety of yarns including cashmere, and cotton but all with that number indicating the weight category so one can substitute yarns. Each pattern has a difficulty rating as well and 16 of them are in the very easy level with only one being for beginner. Several are ripple or granny square type. The ones I liked to make are the Square medallion using Kersti yarn (dk weight), a pretty granny in orange, fuchsia and white, and a patchwork sampler in Tahki cotton classic. The trellis one in Karabella cashmere would make a gorgeous shawl if made wider. Some are done in intarsia crochet including one with ducks. The lace blanket started at the center in alpaca silk is interesting. The colors on this and on a few others such as shells blanket in black and white don't seem right to me for babies though. The bundle blanket is meant also to wrap the baby inside as it has crocheted drawstrings. The bunny blanket is in Lorna's laces variegated wool and has a bunny head. The stars and moon blanket is tunisian crochet with intarsia. There's a difficult cabled blanket and another in lace. Good mix and definitely one of the better ones in this series.

Chet Baker, poster child for West Coast Cool Jazz and patron saint of its notorious lush life, kept a diary. Published by his estate and introduced by his widow, his entries have been tailored to a memoir of his life from 1946 to 1963. These are the years of his rise to stardom in music and movies--and his tumble into the trenches of incarceration and drug abuse. The book is divided into 13 quick-reading chapters in which Baker writes of his life as a musician, all seasoned with tales of drugs, prison terms, and a laundry list of romances. Often, though, his writings are not spicy enough; births, deaths, pregnancies, and car chases are noted without much detail. What must have been extremely charged times are written about with a kind of academic disinterest: "Moving quickly toward the noise, as did everyone else, I saw Dick lying on the floor. He had passed out cold, and several people were trying to figure out what was wrong with him. We located a doctor and cleared the stage area. I should point out that Dick had always taken care of business; always at work on time and always playing exceptionally." While some readers may be disappointed by the lack of layered passion one hears in Baker's voice or in the smooth and solid sound of his horn, there is still considerable value in reading his own account of his story.
Book Description
The beloved yet infamous Chet Baker-trumpeter, crooner, junkie, and doomed James Dean-like icon of 1950s jazz-has always projected an air of mystery (and even more so, perhaps, in the years since his death in the late 1980s). In these recently uncovered diary-entries, the mystery fades as we find that Baker's pure trumpeting, aching vocals, and now-classic renditions of many jazz standards all belie the turmoil of a wretched private life governed by addiction and abandon.Baker dominated the jazz scene of the 1950s, working closely with the likes of Gerry Mulligan, Art Pepper, and Stan Kenton. By the Sixties, however, he found himself caught in an incessantly downward spiral of heroin, cocaine, and prescription drugs. In and out of jail, in and out of relationships, criss-crossing the Atlantic, looking for gigs in the States and in Europe, searching of some sort of redemption-such is the life we encounter firsthand in these pages. This memoir is must-reading for all students of jazz history and modern American pop culture.
Customer Reviews:
As Though I Had Wings .......2006-07-03
It was informative, but very short. Chet Baker told his srories to the author, who wrote the book, but there were only about twelve stories.
This is the one to start from.......2004-12-27
I actually love Chet since I've been a fan to him when I begin playing the trumpet in middle school and all of that. Maybe 'cuz I never read a whole lot 'bout him but it's easy for me to go cop that and move on to the other biographies which I have'nt read yet. I'ma give it 4 stars just b/c it was really fun reading and enjoyable. I highly recommend you should check Young Chet: The Chet Baker Story, the documentaries Let's Get Lost and Live at Ronnie's Scott, The life of Chet Baker or sumthin.
This is must-read to those who wants to hear the true story about Chet. As to say Chet is one of my favorite trumpet players of all-time.
Hooked for life.......2002-07-29
His writing is like his music, you are either deeply touched by it or else throw it aside as shallow and unimportant.
But if you open yourself up to his clear style, let yourself be invaded by his soft and melodious phrasing, his superb timing ... you are hooked for life !
BUY CHET'S CDs, ANY OF THEM..........2002-07-05
I bought this book when it came out. couldn't wait. read it, wanted to slit my wrist and shoved it away! Re-read the thing recently and my opinion hasn't changed. You'll be inclined to take up smoking (or start again!), or some other balm after this relentless 'downer.' I wish I had bought a CD of Chet's I don't already have instead. After all, the MUSIC IS THE MAN, and, my God! what music. Mr. Baker's unique ability -- from the depths of abuse, desperation and excess -- IS HIS BIOGRAPHY, his legacy, and his brilliance. Don't read, just listen, close your eyes, and be transported!
Not funny, valentine.......2001-01-22
It has always been a puzzle to me how an artist with the originality of Chet Baker, tries, and finally succeds, in destroying his talent and then himself;not necessarily in that order.
I just ordered Jeroen de Valk's book. I hope it gives me a more balanced perspective of Baker, who's music makes me smile and cry at the same time........
Book Description
The story of Berek Jakubowicz (now Benjamin Jacobs), a Jewish dental student, is a gripping account of the horrors of the Holocaust. Jacobs was deported in 1941 from his Polish village and taken to a Nazi labor camp where he remained a prisoner of the Reich until the ending days of war. He is convinced that he owes his survival to the possession of a few dental tools and rudimentary skills as he was moved from labor camp to labor camp. Jacobs writes about the loss of family, what life was like as a prisoner, and the horrible truths about the Holocaust that only a survivor can tell.
Goes far beyond most personal accounts of the Holocaust in reflecting the author's raw courage, his will power, and his luck over a seemingly never-ending four-year period.Gerard E. Silberstein

An Incredible Story of Endurance and Survival.......2006-04-21
"The Dentist of Auschwitz" is a spellbinding novel about a man that lived through the holocaust of World War II. The trials and tribulations of Benjamin Jacobs as he survives through labor and concentration camps will move you. Had it not been for the author's dental instruments that he brought with him, he would most likely not be alive today. Be thankful that he is alive and can tell accounts of his intriguing survival because this book is a very interesting and trivial tale. It is a very well written novel that I could not put down. I would recommend this novel to anyone and everyone.
Page turner, who needs fiction? Remarkable true story........2005-07-11
I couldn't put this book down. Benjamin's story needs to be made into a movie: are you listening S. Spielberg? This is a remarkable book of unbelievable odds of survival. Ben escaped death so many times, but, the ending of this book is the most tragic episode of his story. I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs a perspective and gratitude adjustment; when you read about the suffering of Jews and the fortitude of the survivors, you come to realize how petty and spoiled people can be in their own minds. Each time I read about a survivor, I feel a renewed sense of the gratitude I have for my life. My mother is also a survivor of Auschwitz, but each survivor's story is unique. Read and realize gratitude.
A Remarkable Story of Courage and Survival.......2004-12-26
I found out about this book after reading another book that the author co-wrote. It is called The 100-Year Secret and it deals with a portion of the material that is contained in The Dentist of Auschwitz. The author spent almost five years in various camps, riding in closed railroad cars in summer, open railroad cars in winter, on death marches in the dead of winter, and on "hell ships," that were mistakingly attacked by the RAF and he, along with his brother still outlived the Nazi monsters that created this world for them. How Jacobs managed to survive his voyage through "man's inhumanity to man" is at the heart of this amazing story of survival. I promise you will not be able to put this book down.
An outstanding account of a Holocaust Survivor........2002-10-22
I started reading this book and could not hardly put it down. I think I read it in 3 days. Benjamin Jacobs was sent to a concentration camp along with the rest of his family. Benjamin and his father ended up at Auschwitz. Had it not been for Benjamin's dental training and given a little bit of preference over the other inmates, the pure hell he was put through would have surely ended in death. The love story between him and Zosia is touching. Unbelievable how anyone could survive just a nightmare. This is truly the part of history most of us would like to rewrite. Great book.
This would make a good "first book" of Holocaust reading........2001-12-11
"The Dentist of Auschwitz" may sound like it is about a dentist who worked for the Nazis, but it is not. This is a very personal story about a boy who struggled to keep his dentistry tools with him as he entered the prison camps. It could just possibly be that the tools saved his life. His services were offered to the other prisoners, though he did have to do some unpleasant dentistry as well. This story is much more than a story of dentistry. In fact, his dental services are a very small part of a story about a young boy and his father who were taken from their home. Later he located his younger brother in a nearby camp. Eventually, all three were together. The book tells of a romance between Jew and non-Jew,(a few sentences a bit personal) which is rare in the survivor books. I will not divulge more story, because, if you are like me, I do not want to "know the show before I see it." I will say that this young man was not as concerned for his own life as he was for others. He does not speak in detail about the horrific behavior of the Nazis as many other books do, (not to say that the truth should be hidden). This is a book of hardships but not gore. I have read at least fifty personal survivor accounts of the Holocaust, because I am a Jew in spirit. I am particular about the honesty in the books that I read. The writer of this book was not overly flowery; but on the contrary, with few words, he made you feel that you were there. In my view, he is a very good writer. This book was pleasant and inspiring reading for me. Larry
