This book tells the tale of the prolific Italian architect, inventor, farmer, writer, and engineer Gaetano Ciocca, whose career took him from the battlefronts of World War I to Stalin’s Russia, Mussolini’s Italy, FDR’s America, and finally to postwar liberal-democratic Italy. Like celebrated counterparts such as Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier, Ciocca was a visionary so confident in his vision of a future in which all aspects of life would be rationalized and modernized that no set of practical or political obstacles could ever stand in his way. Ciocca’s endeavors included the development of “fast houses,” a “theater for 20,000 spectators,” the “guided roadway,” and the rationalist pig farms referred to by Carlo Belli as “Ciocca’s Grand Hotel for Pigs.”

A Memorable Carreer.......2005-09-10
After some 30 moves in as many years we now live in La Jolla, California. La Jolla is a lovely place but infested with gaudy grey geezers. The greeting among these creatures is "What did you do?" meaning back when one was alive, real world. The response "FBI" provokes a reply incorporating "interesting", the dreaded description often applied to one's heirs and artwork. Well it was interesting, fascinating. If it was all that interesting there should be material for a book. Wait, wait, come back There are tales to be told, who killed JFK, was J. Edgar a sissy boy? For some thirty years I was proudly and purposely a criminal case agent, meaning not one of those Washington weenies. A damned good agent, among the most decorated. Decent read, but not worth $.......2003-05-20
Explaining how analyists work and their associated confilcts of interest is very interesting stuff. However, this book doesn't really offer advice to investors on how to invest intelligently. In the end, this is a decent book with some good info on how the street works, but its not worth $. I dont plan on re-reading this one in the near future.
Something For Everyone.......2002-09-13
Decades from now, when historians want to get a better understanding of what Wall Street was like at the turn of the 21st century, they won't need to look much further than The Faber Report. Faber's book paints an amazingly clear and comprehensive picture of today's investment climate, giving the reader gobs of insight into the inner workings of the Street.
The book has something for everyone; whether you're a novice investor trying to navigate the world of mutual funds or a hedge fund manager with a penchant for short selling, you'll find it eminently useful. (And if you happen to be the New York state attorney general looking for a blueprint to prosecute Jack Grubman and the rest of Wall Street, you'll find the book very worthwhile!) While the book covers investing basics with exceptional clarity (it has a paragraph on the P/E ratio that is one of the best I've seen), it also contains some headier material that more sophisticated investors will find helpful (his 12 point checklist for uncovering financial shenanigans is a keeper).
It's difficult to write a book that is both entertaining and instructive, but Faber has pulled it off in spades.

Good For Understanding Wall Street But Not for Making Money.......2002-08-19
David Faber is a good reporter in that he does not only repeat what information is given to him but injects some analysis and investigation into his stories. These capabilities are reflected in this book in explaining how the different hedge funds, brokers, mutual funds and bankers interact and affect the market. Although there is some fluff , all in all this book is interesting if only to satisfy your curiosity.
On the other hand, even though it gives you an understanding of wall street it offers no help on how to use that to profit. Considering that most individual investors are in the market to make money, this book leaves a gap to be filled. To that effect I found the book " Generate Thousands in cash on your stocks without selling them" recommended by another reviewer to be helpful in supplying specific strategies to recover losses on stocks in this market.

Good Basic Instructions on Antique Radio Restoration.......2007-03-13
This book starts off on an extremely elementary tone. In fact, people who know what a resistor is may find themselves wondering whether they should be reading this book at all. However, later in the book, there are detailed descriptions of how certain circuits work and how radios work - in a fair amount of detail for an elementary book. Unfortunately, there is very little middle ground. That is, after the first few chapters, terminology is used that has not been defined, nor is it found in the glossary. Consequently, the truly novice reader may need to look elsewhere for the missing information. Some chapters describe, in detail, what could go wrong with an old radio and how to fix the problems. This makes for rather heavy reading, unless one is actually trying to fix a radio that has one of those particular problems; in such a case, these sections could be quite valuable. Radio cabinet refinishing is also covered and suggestions are made on acquiring equipment, parts and further references. Overall, I found this book to be very interesting and written in a style that is clear, authoritative and quite engaging, although, as mentioned, a bit dense in some areas. I intend to refer to it extensively in restoring my old radios.

Don't waste your time. Way off on prices-(low). Looked up the first ten tombstone radios on ebay and only one was in the book.Take the money you wound spend on this and get something with a high recommendation.

If you never collected a radio, then this is for you. Other than that, there is not enough information to be of help if you have restored one radio. Also, sad to say, the information and sources are not current.

For those who are relatively new to the hobby of collecting and restoring antique radios, the frustration stemming from the lack of material devoted to the beginner in this field is all too often the cause of those with high initial enthusiasm to give up prematurely. If you are one of the many who may have found their entry into this potentially facinating pastime to be a bit daunting, take heart. Now in its second edition the "Antique Radio Restoration Guide" provides an abundance of information for the beginning to intermediate antique radio enthusiast. Throughout its twelve chapters the reader is guided through the basics of choosing a radio, the fundamentals of radio theory and repair as well as cosmetic and cabinet restoration. There is also a section on setting up your own repair shop including resources for obtaining test equipment and instructions for actually building some of your own. Though beginners may find some of the technical material in a few of the chapters a bit challenging, this book is nonetheless a fine reference work that, providing the reader's enthusiasm for the subject prevails, he will likely refer to often and will grow into in no time.

If your tastes run the gambit from crystal sets to early tube sets and novelty items, check out this Guide. Plenty of history and tips, lots of photos, and some listings with prices and manufacturing dates. Plenty of cool old ads too. An intriguing trip through the early days.

Easy to understand and easy to build working wooden locks. I have the first book 'Working Wooden Locks" and have made all the locks in it. Sure would be nice if he would do another book with more/different locks. Be careful buying the second book. They are ONLY 2 Books. Fist Book: Working Wooden Locks, Second Book: MORE Working Wooden Locks. The cover picture was changed on the first book and has caused some confusion.
I Love these 2 Books and Highly Recommend them.

Best infant development book I've seen.......1998-11-17
If you're concerned or inquisitive about your baby's development, you should have this book! Dr. Sears covers the physical, mental, and emotional develpments of your baby. Hundreds of cute pictures of his own baby. The reason I prefer this book over other infant development books is that the book's style is so "down-to-earth" and conversational, and the pictures help you see what's happening with your baby rather than just reading about it.

The Beatles quiz book is so fun to read! when i read something very shocking it keeps me hooked. Everything is very interesting and im nearly obsessed with the Beatles-Im huge fan. I didn't know much about the Beatles before I read the quiz book. It has very interesting and Detailed Qs and As. Michael J. Hockinson did did a great job. I ordered it as used and it was in a good condition. It's like reading the biography on The Beatles, but in very fun way. Any Beatles fan should order this-I highly recommend! XD
Ebooks not worth it.......2004-06-08
By the time I got the Mircosoft reader activated then activated the Pocket PC got the item downloaded I could not get help on how to get the ebook to the pocket PC. When I got it to the pocket pc it would not open It said "Microsoft Reader is no longer able to access the Book" Fine now What. You'll play hell tring to contact Amazon about it or a credit. And I can't afford the Mircosoft Help.

This book has so much more information about "The Beatles" than any others I've read... including The "NEW" Anthology!!! The author is obviously an "EXPERT" in all that is "Beatles". I pride myself as quite the Beatles aficionado, but this book is so far beyond anything I can relate to, it's not even funny. The amount of work that went into the creation of this book is simply mind boggling. Every Beatles fan on the planet should own this book. If you "think" you "know" The Beatles; this book will challange you beyond your wildest dreams. By far the "Best" resource ever written on "The Fab Four". Thank You Mr. Hockinson; for a job well done. The "Ultimate" to say the least.

I couldn't put this book down........2004-01-14
At times the stories collected in The Last Eyewitnesses just get to you -- the insanity and cruelty of it all. This book should be required reading for everyone. Those interested in Jewish history, Polish history and Holocaust accounts will find this book indispensible. Beyond that, however, this collection appeals to anyone interested in the human condition and the absolute will to survive. An amazing, amazing book.
A welcome addition to the growing body of Holocaust studies........2000-02-04
In The Last Eyewitnesses, the editor, Wiktoria Sliwowska, has presented her own testimony of the destruction of Polish Jewry as well as those of her contemporaries.These have been assembled by the Association of the Children of the Holocaust in Poland. The special character of this anthology lies in the fact that these Jews, mostly in their sixties and seventies now, have come together to relate their childhood memories of the Holocaust, when childhood was denied to them. The reader becomes a witness to a unique cathartic experience. The translation of Julian and Fay Bussgang has given the English reader the opportunity to encounter these testimonies, full of the stark details which contradict everything expected from childhood. It is chilling to hear of the young who, besides being faced with constant want and privation and witness to violence and brutalization, also have to deal with an immediate and mature realization that their own lives are tenuous and threatened day by day. One individual describes his fear and panic, as he and his sister fled from their pursuers into the woods, as well as the subsequent pain and guilt for having separated from her during their attempted escape. His path led to life, while hers led to death. It is painful to read of children who are clearly aware that in their circumstances, it is dangerous to be a Jew. A new word has entered their Jewish vocabulary, "Action", a raid by Germans and their cohorts to seize Jews for death, either to be killed on the spot or taken to the death camps. One can scarcely imagine living with the ever-present fear of being discovered - afraid of one's dark Jewish appearance, living in cellars or closets, forbidden to approach a window, hiding in the woods. The sad fate of Polish Jewry is revealed in the statement of one teenage girl upon returning home after liberation: "...In my one and only little dress, without a cent to my name, I traveled to where Mama, Dorota, and the rest of the family were sent to the ghetto. Here, after arriving at my destination, I lived through the worst moment of my life. I did not anybody, not a single blessed soul." Not only did they not find many of their loved-ones or any vibrant Jewish community after the War, but they found anti-Semitism still alive, though their families were dead. These children spent at least six years trying to divest themselves of their Jewish identity. They had to change their names, sometimes several times, change their language, in many cases, and learn Catholic prayers and rituals. Many survivors have never returned to their original, Jewish names. As one sees by the names listed in the table of contents, many have never really recovered their identities as Jews. One individual expresses his confusion about whether he is a Jewish-Pole or a Polish-Jew. The histories presented here cover the entire gamut from total alienation from Jewish contacts to strenuous effort to learn about their background and Israel. As one reads the various depositions, one is amazed that any children could have lived through such inimical circumstances. One is amazed at the efforts of courage and sacrifice, love and desperation on the part of these parents to give up their children to strangers in the hope that they might live through the horrible German regime. One is also amazed at the stories of great courage on the part of many Poles in the rescue efforts described. "Antek" Cukierman, hero of the Warsaw Ghetto, has commented that one Pole could betray a hundred hiding Jews, but it took a hundred Poles to save a single Jew. These accounts verify that reality, as does Yad Vashem's recognition of many of them to be included in the ranks of the Righteous Among the Nations. The people who have come forth in the aftermath of the Holocaust to give these accounts of their personal lives and tragedies, as they struggle to define their identities, have gone on to demonstrate that there can be life after the Holocaust, but there can never be an elimination of its legacy.And this legacy will extend beyond the lives of even these and other last witnesses. Polish child survivors speak of their Holocaust experiences........1999-01-30
The 65 personal histories chronicled here represent the scope and variety of experiences Polish child survivors of the Holocaust underwent. They tell of kindness and cruelty, of good luck and bad, of the survival of a complete nuclear family and the survival of one who knows only that he is, by origin, a Jew. Because this these people originally came from all over Poland, they faced persecution by not only the Nazis and their Belarussian, Lithuanian, Polish, and Ukrainian collaborators, but also from the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and various other anti-Semitic, anti-Polish groups.
Most of these chronicles convey the sense of absolute aloneness and isolation their tellers must have felt. However, a number reveal connections among the group of contributors, connections that hint at the scope of the Jewish community that existed in Poland before the Nazis invaded.
The individual stories are compelling. Their cumulative effect is powerful. They bear witness to the spectrum of human capacity for good and for evil, and, above all, to the twists of fate that meant the difference between death and survival. Accounts of the lingering, ever-present effects of suffering resulting from the events of over 50 years ago serve as reminders that the past is, indeed, never really over.
