Customer Reviews:
Guide for history.......2007-01-17
This book is one to get for all ages.It lists all the brand motors of old. It gives the history of each motor which I found very interesting and helpful. It also gives a price guide of each motor and which I disagree with. The motor I have I would not sell for the price thats listed in the book. But it gives you the info on what you are looking for.
Great reference on kicker history.......2006-11-10
This is NOT a detailed repair manual, but rather a valuable history of outboards including many of the obscure makes such as the one you have leaning in the corner of the shed.
An outboard collector's reference.......2004-02-03
After reading the 2nd edition of Peter Hunn's The Old Outboard Book I couldn't wait to get the revised and expanded 3rd edition. I take the book with me when I go looking for old outboards and swap meets. No better reference exists in my opinion.
The Old Outboard Book.......2003-04-17
This book has become the "Bible" for most outboard collectors. It has everything in one place. The big list of almost ALL known US outboard manufacturers, The price guide which is the only published guide of its kind, developed thru consultation with a good cross section of prominent and active collectors, Great Serial number guides, Spark plug charts, and much more. Peter's style is very readable, with a "story" connected to each brand. Hundreds of outboard collectors keep a copy in their car, while touring the country looking for additions to their collections. Most helpful to identify, and value that Garage sale or Outboard meet, find. HIGHLY recommended, especially for those new to the hobby.
Save Your Money.......2003-02-25
This book is stretched between a technical manual and a coffee table book way too tight. Hunn covers the larger manuf. with research that could be found on any historical website, and briefly touches on the rare and obscure in general descriptions. Do not rely on this book for technical information. Simply order specific parts lists for the motors you have. I would like to know if Hunn's other book was better as a picture book, as this one was too poorly written to be of any enjoyment.

Customer Reviews:
What a Useful Tool!.......2003-02-19
I read this book a total of three times, one right after the other. Let me explain:
The first time: for myself
The second time: to write down all the exercises and create a workbook of sorts
The third time: with my husband while each of us worked through our make-shift workbooks
Each time I read this book, How to Stay Married & Love it: Solving the Puzzle of a Soul Mate Marriage (Nancy Landrum with Jim Landrum) I was able to grasp something different. I found myself thinking with a more positive attitude while working to apply this knowledge.
This book is set up in a very reader-friendly format filled with charming illustrations and inspirational quotes. I was reminded while creating my own workbooks to accompany this book that it isn't about being perfect, but rather making all the "pieces of the puzzle" fit . . . finding harmony.
My husband isn't one who finds reading at the top of his list of interests, so getting him involved with this project was no easy task. Before long, however, he began initiating our time together with this book. While our marriage isn't in danger of ending, finding tools necessary to keep that from becoming a reality has always been important to both of us. This book proved to be quite useful in that venture.
Practical, easy to understand advice, but nothing new.......2002-11-12
"How To Stay Married & Love It! Solving The Puzzle Of Soulmate Marriage" is a response to the high and climbing divorce rate in America. It was conceived as the result of the difficulties that the authors had as a married couple and how they overcame those struggles. After arriving at what they feel is a soulmate marriage they realized that the lessons they learned may prove helpful for other marriages. From that idea the book was born.
The book does a good job of covering the most common relationship problems and offering constructive advice to move through those problems. While there are many chapters on specific items, the book can basically be divided up into four primary areas (the areas referred to as "corner puzzle pieces"). These areas are 1) point of view/perspective, 2) communication, 3) respect and 4) commitment. Sometimes the book seems more like a workbook with exercises, checklists, skits and other teaching devices. But going through the skits, exercises, etc. can be illuminating. While there is really nothing new here that is not in other relationship and marriage books, some will find this a particularly easy to read and understand book compared to others. No fancy theories or long drawn out psychological descriptions of techniques, just good, direct information and techniques that anyone can work through.
The conflicts, difficulties, and rewards of married life.......2002-10-06
How To Stay Married & Love It! Solving The Puzzle Of Soulmate Marriage by Nancy and Jim Landrum is an informed and informative guide written in response to today's regrettably high divorce rate. Individual chapters focus on communication difficulties, motivating oneself to be respectful to one's partner even when inwardly seething, and learning to devote one's heart to a relationship. How To Stay Married & Love It! is a highly recommended, "reader friendly" guide that offers a multitude of new insights into the conflicts, difficulties, and rewards of married life.
How to Stay Married & Love It!.......2002-08-30
I found this book to be easy to read. The chapters were short and each chapter's information built on the previous ones. The stories of the Landrum's stuggles and the description of the relationship they now enjoy gave me hope for my marriage. Nancy's list of defective communication tools let my husband and I know exactly what we are doing that creates hurt and distance in our relationship. Subsequent chapters gave clear directions for communication methods that are helping us to resolve our conflicts.
Book Description
As well as being an authoritative and convenient resource for scholars, students, and performers, the Oxford Composer Companion to Bach provides the ordinary Bach/Baroque music enthusiast with information not usually found in programme or sleeve notes, exploring the life and works of Bach and the historical context in which he lived. Topics covered include: genres (eg chorales), structures (eg fugue), individual works (eg St John Passion), compositional practices and techniques, people and places, institutinos, instruments, performing practice, festivals and performers, reception of Bach's music, stylistic influence and parodies, and Bach scholarship. The main alphabetical text is supplemented by useful endmatter, including a family tree, chronology, list of works, openings of vocal works, and a glossary of specialist terms.
Customer Reviews:
The best reference book on Bach.......2005-12-05
For those curious about the life and context behind the music, there are two ways to approach a composer with such a rich life and a diverse musical output such as Bach: the first is through a biography, which tells a linear story of the man, his music, his family and his times. We can follow his life through the different cities in which he lived, and look at his music chronologically, seeing how he built on each stage of his life to create increasingly complex and beautiful music.
The other way, which is apparent in a book like the Oxford Composer Companion to Bach, is the artificial, yet none the less useful method of providing information in encyclopedic form. Here, there is no chronology, but each name, each work, each city and episode in his life is listed in alphabetical order. Granted, for readers approaching Bach's life for the first time, a biography would likely be more useful and efficient. Yet browsing a book like this, allowing chance to take over as you flip from page to page, yields a unique glimpse of Bach's life and music.
I must confess to being a book-lover, and, especially, a dictionary lover. I enjoy browsing encyclopedias and dictionaries, and have bookcases full of them. (I can trace this back to when I was about 8 years old, and my mother won an encyclopedia on the television game show, Jeopardy. I recall with great pleasure the afternoons spend leafing through the 20 volumes of that storehouse of knowledge.) While not all people may share this passion, those who do, and who are interested in Bach, will find this book to be ideal.
With entries on people, places, instruments, and, of course, all of Bach's works, this book contains everything you could want to know about Bach's life and music, and then some. Leaping from entry to entry, one can wander through an explanation of Suites to read about Minuets, how they are played Alternativement, questions of rhythm, and how Bach treats these questions. Each place Bach lived incites the reader to explore the entries for the works he composed there and the musicians he met and worked with. With more than 600 pages, this encyclopedia of all things Bach, with entries by more than thirty of the world's most esteemed Bach scholars, will delight all true lovers of his music.
Bach's key works are treated in longer articles, but there are many entries that deal with general musical questions and instruments. The book also has entries for each of Bach's cantatas (something no other currently available book has) as well as a full listing of Bach's works in an appendix.
I cannot praise this book too highly - it is the book I refer to the most when curious about any aspect of Bach's life and works, and it belongs on the shelves of all Bach-lovers.
Customer Reviews:
In a way more haunting than the updated combined volume.......2005-08-02
This book is slimmer than the volume which came out in 1994, combining and somewhat updating this and the sequel 'Saving the Fragments,' but in a way it has more of an emotional impact, even considering a lot of the powerful vignettes of Isabella and her by then two remaining sisters after the liberation are completely left out. Because it's so short, it has more room to leave a deeper emotional impact; it didn't really dawn on me until rather recently that this, the most powerful book I've ever read, offers up relatively little details about daily life in the camps or seemingly important events and rituals the then-four remaining sisters would have gone through, like mealtime, beatings, the superiors in their barracks, the type of "work" they were forced to do, and their boarding of and ride in the icy halftrack from Auschwitz to Birnbaumel in November 1944. We get some events that took place in both camps, but not, as in other Shoah memoirs, long detailed passages and chapters accounting for every day, week, or even month spent there. What has made this book so powerful to me over the years aren't the details but rather the truly touching and genuine bond between Isabella and her sisters, how they stayed alive and together for one another, because of one another, even when it would have been easier, particularly for the youngest remaining sister Regina (called "Rachel" in this book because she wouldn't let Isabella use her real name in print at the time), to go the way of the smoke. We don't even know the ages of the four sisters, which makes it harder to picture the full dynamics of this relationship (the oldest sister, the one who was caught during their eventual escape and never reunited with them, dying shortly after Bergen-Belsen was liberated, was actually almost 30 years old, I've since discovered). These are fragments in the truest sense of the word, which Isabella wrote on scraps of paper, in her native Hungarian, shortly after she'd arrived in the States in May of 1945, whenever the images and memories forced themselves to the forefront of her mind and she needed to get them out of her system, however temporarily. Although in the updated volume, this account is told in the present tense, which makes it seem even more gripping than when told in the past tense in this original book.
There are also some passages in this original volume that were left out in the updated one, like how Isabella's mother, whose death she never stops mourning or thinking about, had taught her the very important lesson of listening to her heart and the small inner voice within her dictating what was right, as well as describing how her only brother, Philip, temporarily hid as his family, friends, and neighbors were being herded to the cattlecars, but reappeared a moment later, unwilling to desert his family and not share in their fate too. (Interestingly, I happened upon the ID cards the US Holocaust Memorial Museum's webpage has for Isabella, her mother, her baby sister, and her oldest sister, and discovered that Philip may have been the only surviving brother in a family of five sisters, but wasn't the only brother they ever had; after Potyo [whose real name was Helen] was born, there were apparently born twin boys who died at 8 months of age.) There's also an interesting switch in the passage talking about how Isabella would put down her shovel and stop digging whenever the Nazi guards looked away in Birnbaumel, since her mother had told her not to aide her enemy; in this book it says "I honored her and kept myself alive" as opposed to, in the updated version, "I honored her and tried to keep myself alive." Reading the original unchanged passages makes it more emotional. And though even years later this book haunts me so much that I feel as though I had lost my own sister, nothing compares to the experience of reading it the very first time and receiving the stunning blow that Cipi, the oldest of the four sisters left, was caught and did not survive, having assumed she was with them in America and had survived too, even that maybe they'd found her even decades later. One feels the same way Isabella does, that had she known she would have tugged at her sleeve or run holding her sister's hand or arm. This volume also contains the very powerful closing line that is completely left out of the updated volume, "Mama, I make this vow to you--I will teach my sons to love life, respect man, and hate only one thing--war."
Deeper than Words.......2005-02-01
Although the length of this book is not great, the meaning behind each word is. Isabella Leitner, a Holocaust survivor, wrote this on her experiences in her life as a Jewish woman in Europe during WWII. Leitner was transported to a concentration camp. She writes many of her obstacles as if she were writing a journal. I liked this book, but is not the best I have ever read. What made me give it four stars was that it is true. The person who experienced this wrote it down. It makes me admire Leitner because she went back to this time and wrote about it on paper. I did not give it five stars because I felt I needed a deeper understanding of what I was reading. I would suggest that someone be about sixteen before they read it, unless they were very mature. I would not recommend this book to someone who likes things to be concise. This is best for a patient reader who searches for a deeper meaning. All together, Fragments of Isabella is a great book for the dedicated reader.

A Startling, personal account of the Holocaust.......2000-10-14
Isabella Leitner cannot forgive the German and Hungarian people for their silence during the atrocities that were perpetrated upon the Jews during the Holocaust. As a Jew living in Hungary, she wass ubjected to constant racial hatred by the townspeople and the sadistic behavior of the brutal Hungarian gendarmes. Isabella's family is thrown into a ghetto and forced to live in a small, confined area with many other families. When the SS men round up the Jews, Isabella's family is forced out on to the streets where her mother is severely beaten. Isabella's nightmare begins at this point. Isabella's father attempted to earn his family their freedom from the anti-Semitic Hungary but government officials impeded their release. At every juncture, the father was unable to secure his family's exit from Hungary. Isabella and her family feared for their lives because they knew that their Hungarian neighbors could not be trusted to protect them from the SS. In fact, Isabella believed that her neighbors "would be Hitler's willing accomplices" when the bell tolled for the Leitners. On May, 29, 1944, Isabella's worst fears were realized. The SS rounded up the Jews to take them to the camps as the Hungarian townspeople watched. These good people stood by as the Germans marched in and led many of their neighbors to their death. The Gentiles knew what Hitler and the SS were doing to the Jews, Isabella believes. The Gentiles felt a
camaraderie, a oneness with Hitler, she says. Hitler exploited their hatred of the Jews and they remained silent while six million were sent to their death. Isabella lost her mother in the concentration camp. Her mother was too weak and frail to fight after the guards had beaten her during the round-up. Yet the Leitner girls formed a bond during their stay at Auschwitz. They kept each other alive and forced the others to fight against disease, lethargy, and the destruction of the soul. The concentration camps bonded them to each other and they maintained that bond throughout their lives. After spending time in the Auschwitz camp, the sisters were moved to Birnbaumel and then on to Prauschnitz, where the Jewish prisoners mingled withthe townspeople in this small town. Yet no town resident would help the Jews. They remained silent as the SS guards paraded them through the town. Isabella realizes many years later that "you will not find a single German who lived in Prauschnitz who ever saw a single one of us." These German people ignored the atrocities because (in their minds) the Jews were dirty animals who deserved extermination, she says. Leitner cannot forgive these people for ignoring the pleas of these prisoners. The Prauschnitz citizens allowed Isabella and her sisters to be tortured by the German guards. For Leitner, there is no forgiveness. Isabella lost her sister Cici during this time. When the sister
escaped from the unsuspecting guards, Cici was the only one to remain with the SS guards. Isabella learns many years later that Cici was "dragged for three long weeks on the death march to Bergen-Belsen where she was killed." Not one German person helped her sister. In 1960, Isabella and her husband traveled through Europe but Isabella wanted to avoid anything that would remind her of the German people and their silence during her internment in the camps. Yet she cannot avoid the Germans because the German people are now the main group of tourists who travel through Europe. When Isabella sees them, she reports, she bristles but ignores them, and says she doesn't mind the young ones so much because they are an innocent generation. It's the older ones. At Pere-Lachaise, Isabella comes face to face with her worst fears. She encounters a group of German people. These German people laugh and carry on, to her horror. When she discovers that they are truly
Germans, she recoils in horror as if "acid had been hurled in her face." She knows that any one of the men could have been her jailer. She knows that "they are the ones." For Isabella, these Germans are the same as the ones that stood by and watched as six million Jews were led to their death. Isabella cannot forgive them or the Hungarians who remained silent as her family was systematically destroyed. She leaves Pere-Lachaise with the knowledge that she can never forgive the silent citizens who were accomplices to Hitler's reign of terror. Leitner's memoir is a harrowing testament to the horrors of the Holocaust.
Incredible true account of a girl's life in the Holocaust.......2000-04-29
This was the best account of life in a German concentration camp that I have ever read. Once I started reading it I could not put it down. The reader gets so ingrossed in the book that you not only feel for the characters, but you feel as if you are one of the characters. This book is a must read for any reader who enjoys Holocaust books, or a reader who is just looking for a book that won't let you put it down.

Delightfully bittersweet journey.......2005-08-21
Even though this book is pretty slim, it still packs a major wallop. Unlike many Shoah memoirists, Isabella didn't stop at what happened immediately after the liberation. This wonderful little volume details what she and her two remaining sisters went through from January to June of 1945. They managed to escape from a death march to Bergen-Belsen on the 23rd of January while most of the guards had run to the back to halt and punish an earlier escape that was already in progress, and the guards who remained in front of the column couldn't see them from their position. They also happened to be right across the way from a house with no smoke coming from the chimney, and in that blink of an eye it became one sister blindly mutely following the other. Isabella and the youngest of her remaining sisters were very nearly caught and shot, but miraculously the SS man and his dog walked away without seeing or scenting them. The oldest sister wasn't as lucky and was captured, beaten, and dragged back to the column to continue the march. But for the three who escaped, the liberation came a few days later, in form of the Red Army. For 6 weeks they stayed in the house they'd escaped into, along with 3 Polish women who also escaped into the house (and there were 30 girls and women who escaped in the same vicinity, they discovered). They were still cold and hungry, and being forced to work for the Russians (such as washing their bloody uniforms in harsh lye and herding cows), and with no stores open had to loot everything, or be ingenious with what they already had, but the thrill of freedom was so great that in the grand scheme of things it didn't really matter to the girls.
We see flashes of bitterness and hatred for what was done to their family and against the people who did it to them in the first place, but overwhelmingly this is a story of their reawakening, their gradual return to normal life and the human family, a constant continual joy and delight in life, at all of the people they met on the road in front of their house, on the road from Jagadschutz to the train station in Oelsk, on the train to Odessa, and finally in the refugee center in Odessa. These people knew what had happened and then some, had already lived through too much for one to expect them to be happy or hopeful, yet there they all were, full of love, life, hope for the future, constant acts of little kindnesses to total strangers to whom they instantly felt like lifelong friends or family, were constantly upbeat about the future, optimistically asking anyone and everyone if they'd seen their missing friends and family, to tell them they were alive if they saw them, hoping that their oldest sister and only brother would find them anyday now. The joy and love in these pages are balanced by the sorrow of remembering the barely recent past and how they will forever be condemned to live in two worlds, then and now, that the memories will live as long as they do, but this is not a book about hate and bitterness, it's a book about forging a hopeful loving future. As it says in one passage, these sisters were sewn together emotionally in the camps, a powerful bond forged in fire, and on the road from liberation to joining their father in America they continue to be virtually inseperable, still helping and supporting one another. And as we find out, the youngest sister Regina (called "Rachel" in this original volume because at the time she didn't want her real name in print) turned out to be the bravest strongest one, the mother hen to this shrunken little family, when before she'd been the one who most wanted to go the way of the smoke, saying the moment they were separated she'd go to the crematorium and wouldn't mind, and that she was only making this superhuman effort for her three older sisters.
By now this volume has been made largely obsolete, however, because of the publication of it and 'Fragments of Isabella' in one combined volume, but here as in the first book we see sentences, minor but telling words and phrases, and even entire paragraphs that were excised in the updated edition. The most glaring omission is in one of the early chapters, where Isabella is talking about how she and her sisters have no feelings as they step over a dead body on the newly liberated German roads, and only perk up if the corpse, Nazi or not, is wearing nicer clothes than theirs. In this original volume there are several paragraphs talking about how this numbness to death was formed in Auschwitz, when every morning the women who had died overnight were stacked up outside of the barracks and collected by the Totekommando, and how glad she always was that she wasn't among the dead stacked up outside of the various blocks. "There but for the grace of the deadly night was I." It's also bittersweet to realise that while Isabella and the two sisters whom she escaped with are adjusting to freedom and on their wonderful life-affirming journey to Odessa and then America, their fourth sister was still on the death march and then in Bergen-Belsen, that she was liberated and died soon afterward as they were sailing to America, knowing that if the guards hadn't returned at that moment, she would have been with them.
