Author Hester Davenport takes a look at the royal households of George III and Queen Charlotte through the eyes of one of England's first popular novelists.

Fanny Burney turned to writing as a means of making a living. Her first novel, Evelina, was published anonymously to great acclaim, and Burney found herself thrust into the limelight -- a role that she didn't necessarily seek, or want. Hester Davenport's style is light enough to keep this one from completely bogging down into details. I had only heard of Fanny Burney as an English woman writer who was before Jane Austen's time, but that was all. Now after reading this, I am interested enough to track down more of her work -- she would only write a few novels, Evelina, Cecilia, Camilla, and The Wanderer , all of which took a look at young women in high society and the choices they faced, and her copious notes, journals and letters.

For anyone who is interested in the life of a woman writer, the late eighteenth century, or the nature of the writer's life, this is a very entertaining read. I found the writing not at all ponderous, with plenty of notes and details, and a sympathy for the subject that made her plight of struggling for time to write, her own duties, and the hassles of courtship to make the story very real. While this is not a complete biography of Burney's life -- nearly nothing is given of her marriage -- the details of a royal household from the inside out -- is what makes this book so interesting. Burney herself is revealed as a shy, rather quiet woman, but her journals show that she was an acerbic, knowledgeable observer of the world around her.

Davenport carefully explores Burney's relationships with others at the court, most particularly her dealings with Colonel Stephen Digby. This book is good for a quick reference. It is filled with sketches that are grouped into categories (chairs, tables, beds).
It can help you identify the style of a piece of furntiture, but doesn't help authenticating the piece.

Curved piecing is so exciting but I really struggled and finally gave it up. The projects in Piec-lique were intriguing so I purchased the book hoping to learn how to piece curves. When following the instructions, this method is trouble-free. The seams are smooth, and clean. Washable glue is used holding the seam together instead of pins, as a result there are no puckers. Washable glue allows you to look over your project before sewing and make any changes desired. The book has resizing charts so you can enlarge patterns for different projects. The patterns in this book are unique and add variety to your projects. I now love to curve piece and have used the Piec-lique method on several quilts and wall hangings. If you like curves this is the method to try. IT WORKS!!

Looking for a second opinion . . .......2007-03-20

Much as I'd love to learn to machine sew curved pieced applique, after reading through this book I think I'd like a second opinion. My first disappointment came when the author listed washable glue as one of the supplies needed. Any project using this method of piecing must be extremely well thought out prior to beginning. The author suggests making a drawing of the finished piece, and numbering every piece to be appliqued, as well as background pieces, so that you will have a reference to work from and remind you in what order to sew the pieces. All pieced sewing is done from the wrong side of the fabrics, so you need to start with the foremost applique piece, and work towards the background (which is also pieced). The order in which you piece takes ALOT of forethought, and I found this very confusing. Double layered freezer paper is suggested as a template for every piece of the finished work, and seams must be starched, pressed, and glued before being sewn. Honestly, I haven't been inspired to experiment with her method. She does include trace-able outlines for some of the simpler projects, and explains the piecing order for these.
Schamber is a pro at her own method, as is obvious by the beautiful pieces she's included in the book.

At forst, I didn't think that this book would be helpful or entertaining. I already knew a lot about the guys. I was wrong, this book gave me a lot of info and pics I had never seen efore. The fact that the guys had major influence on the writing just made it even better. You go, guys!!

As a long time fan of 98º I bought this book with high hopes (this book is co-writen by the guys which means no stupid writers trying to sell books that don't have any real info in them! Score!). As I started to read it I thought "Oh God, this wasn't worth it! I already know all this! " But boy was i wrong. As I read on there is so much information in here that I didn't know and couldn't have found it anywhere else. If you even remotely like 98º and want to know more about these wonderful guys please please buy this book. I am soooo critical of these kind of books if they aren't 100% great and this is the only book I have found so far that is. I recommend it without a doubt. It's not one of those books you want to read once, the great, never before seen pictures are ones you want to go back and look at all the time!

Best book ever!.......2003-02-14

When I read the book "Witnesses To War" I couldn't put the book down. I was disgusted by the true Nazi persecution. The book is about collections of the true life stories during the holocaust and the Nazi persecution . One of the stories I liked the best was about the Polish children being tested for Germanization because it was twisted that the Nazi's could capture a child .The parents were helpless. I liked this book a lot because I am interested in the holocaust . It's well written and makes you want to read more aobut the holocaust.

A fuller picture of persecution in WWII.......2002-09-29

I was impressed by this book because it presents the suffering of people in WWII without staying completely focused on the Jews. The Nazis were willing to murder anybody, who, for any reason, did not fit in to their ideology or view of the world. With this book, there is a more clear demonstration of that - yes, a couple of the stories are about Jewish children, there is also a story concerning the plight of a Polish child, one about a gypsy girl, and a child's view of the horrendous occurence at Lidice, Czechoslovakia. The stories about the Jewish children are also varied; one escaped via the Kindertransport, one story was about girls hidden in a convent, and another whose father was featured in a very famous photo that made it out of Germany to tip people off to the kinds of things happening there.

My main gripe about the book is fairly minor. I enjoyed the pictures and the background given to each story, but every once in awhile I felt that the text was patronising. Mind you, this is targeted towards a juvenile audience, but if one believes that the children that will be reading this book are mature enough to deal with this type of material, they probably are not in too terrible need of some of the simpler explanations, and I found these a bit distracting from the focus of the text.

Overall, it is a very good book that serves a subject that is often neglected.

Witnesses to War.......2001-12-03

The book I read was Witness to War by Michael Leapman. This book was about eight true-life stories of children that were sent to concentration camps, and others who the Germans tried to make into German citizens. The German police and army shipped off some kids to different places so they did not get caught. A lot of the Jewish people that got sent to camps were well-respected people in a society of German. Most of the people in this book are Jewish but one of the kids is a gypsy. I think this book was very good. It is very odd that people can treat others so cruel.

History through the eyes of those who were there as children.......1999-12-30

I picked this book up from my local book store with great curiosity. I am doing a History GCSE and am especially interested in WW2, and how it affected everyday people like myself. This book looks at the war through the eyes of children. Not only Jewish children but Polish and Gypsy children too. Some parts of the book drew tears to my eyes. I was shocked at some of the horrific things these children endured. I noticed when reading the details about this book, that it is supposed to be suitable for children aged 9-12 years old. I my self am 15 and the other review writer is in college. I have a younger brother aged 11 and I do not think that this book would be appropriate for him! Some of the text would be too difficult for someone his age and a lot of the things mentoined he would not understand (I doubt if he even knows what a concentration camp is! ). Also some of the things talked about are a little too advanced for his peer group. To say I thouroughly enjoyed the book makes me sound slightly morbid, but it was a deeply touching book. Poeple who have read THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK will most likely find this of interest also.

Victims Who Are Seldom Heard.......1999-05-31

I read this book and I thought it was quite interesting... I'm a History major in college and one of my fields of expertise is World War II. I really appreciated this book because it covered some things I've always been curious about, such as Germanization and victims who were not Jewish, but victimized because they were "physically unfit" or "racially impure." You hear very little about the terror of Germanization because until recently, almost non of the Germanized children spoke about it at all. Non-Jewish victims had trouble too because either they were employed in jobs that were censored (art and religion to name a few) or because they were handicapped or because they were members of little-known cultures. The Holocaust should never be forgotten! Never! I am a quarter Polish. My grandma was born in Poland but came to America in 1922. I've always been glad that we got out of Europe long before the war ever started. What would've happened to us?
